The first two were held here at FamilyLife.\u00a0 The third one was held at Focus on the Family.\u00a0 The fourth one was held in Fort Lauderdale at Calvary Chapel.\u00a0 The fifth one was in Irving, Texas.\u00a0 We had about, I think about 700-800 people at that one.\u00a0 This one, as you mentioned, was in Minneapolis, and we had over 1300 people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe cool thing about this, folks\u2014I wish you could go to this.\u00a0 Because, it\u2019s 1300 people who are all passionate about the plight of the orphan.\u00a0 Children who are in foster care, the whole issue of adoption.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got agencies there.\u00a0 You have foundations that are giving away money for adoption there.\u00a0 You\u2019ve have individual laymen and women who are championing the orphan ministry in their local church and making a difference by tying their church into, maybe an orphanage in a foreign country, or perhaps in their state around the foster care issues.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is something that the Christian Alliance for the Orphan is hosting.\u00a0 In fact, FamilyLife, our Hope for Orphans outreach, together with Steven Curtis and Mary Beth and the Show Hope foundation that they\u2019ve put together, Focus on the Family.\u00a0 All of us have gotten together to say, \u201cThis issue is an important issue, and we\u2019ve got to come together to address it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We\u2019re going to lock arms and, together give one single voice on behalf of the orphan.\u00a0 Coming up in November, the weekend of November 5-7, Francis and Lisa Chan are going to help host Orphan Sunday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes. This is a one-hour webcast that the team has put together that churches can use as a part of the worship service, or in a Sunday school class or, as a special event to draw attention to the needs of orphans all around the world.\u00a0 And, to talk together about ways in which the church can be mobilized to be a part of the answer for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe should also mention that the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Orphan Summit is scheduled for the end of next April, 2011.\u00a0 That\u2019s going to be in Louisville, Kentucky at Southeast Christian Church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m looking forward just to going to that church.\u00a0 It has 25,000 members. I\u2019m looking forward to seeing how you put together that large of a facility.\u00a0 But, that church is a true champion on behalf of the orphan.\u00a0 You know folks, you ought to go to FamilyLifeToday.com and get more information about these events that are coming up and find out how you and your church can help champion and give voice to those who have none.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We sat down while we were there at the Orphan Summit in Minneapolis with Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman and asked them for an update on some of what\u2019s happening through the Show Hope foundation.\u00a0 All you had to do was tap lightly on the door, and they busted it down.\u00a0 Because, they\u2019re pretty excited about what God is doing and how God is working through the tragedy they went through as a family a couple of years ago, in the loss of their daughter Maria\u2019s life.\u00a0 How the response of people to that is bringing hope and care to thousands of orphans in China.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>(<\/strong>Interview setting)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I am told by friends who know\u2014and I haven\u2019t done this yet\u2014but I am told if you fly into\u2014and I\u2019ve never done this\u2014Luo Yong China, from the air as you\u2019re flying in, you can see Maria\u2019s Big House of Hope.\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes sir.\u00a0 If the smog\u2019s not\u2026\u00a0 If the pollution is kind of low.\u00a0 On a good day\u2026 But, yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s just been an interesting partnership with the Chinese government.\u00a0 For some reason with us adopting our daughters.\u00a0 Then with him being invited back to sing.\u00a0 It\u2019s like there\u2019s this little cloud parked over China where we have this bit of favor for the time being.\u00a0 The Chinese government has given us this plot of land to build a special needs orphanage to house and provide medical care for these little ones, because there are so many of them.\u00a0 They are the least of the least, the special needs orphans in China.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, at first it started out as a vision that we\u2019ll build this place and at the time the working title was Shohannah\u2019s Hope Healing Home.\u00a0 Because Show Hope used to be called Shohannah\u2019s Hope, then no one could say it, and no one could find it.\u00a0 That got confusing.\u00a0 Then when we nicknamed it Show Hope, it was like.\u00a0 \u201cHey!\u00a0 That\u2019s what we try to do!\u201d\u00a0 So we\u2019ll call it that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey gave us this piece of land. We build what we thought was a decently sized building. We thought, working with our partners in China\u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFast forward.\u00a0 In 2008 when we lost Maria, there was such an outpouring of God\u2019s people.\u00a0\u00a0 Just praying for us and lifting us up.\u00a0 From the outpouring of so many people loving us the Maria\u2019s Miracle Fund was created.\u00a0 Through the funding of that we were able to complete the building and it hit me one day, it accidentally got bigger than we thought so we named it \u201cMaria\u2019s Big House of Hope.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs for being able to spot it from the sky:\u00a0 There\u2019s a part of Maria\u2019s Big House that sticks up a big square.\u00a0 We worked in conjunction with the Chinese government.\u00a0 The name of that part of the government is \u201cThe Blue Sky Foundation.\u201d\u00a0 The way I understand the story.\u00a0 They had painted the part that stuck up with blue clouds.\u00a0 Like a Nike symbol, or Reebok, like their signature.\u00a0 Through broken translation they asked Robin, our partner, \u201cDo you like that?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cIt looks great, we love it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, he and his family live in Beijing so he flew down a month later to check on the progress.\u00a0 And, the whole six floor--\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Six story, 60,000 square feet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The whole building is bright sky blue with white clouds all over it.\u00a0 So, you can see it from the air when you land on a good day.\u00a0\u00a0 People know right where it\u2019s at.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It looks like the set of Toy Story or something.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It does it looks like Toy Story.\u00a0 I can just picture Maria going, \u201cHey God, let\u2019s make them paint the whole thing blue.\u201d\u00a0 The last time I was there\u2014this is no joke\u2014the last time I was there, we pulled out in search of paintbrushes.\u00a0 So we pulled in a different direction I had never been. 300 yards down the road on the right, there\u2019s this little building it\u2019s painted bright blue with white clouds.\u00a0 I asked our driver, \u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d\u00a0 They went, \u201cOh, that\u2019s the tire store.\u00a0 But they love how that\u2019s painted, so they painted theirs that way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, before long all of China is going to have blue houses with clouds on them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s unbelievable.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t even mean to do it.\u00a0 That\u2019s Maria\u2019s Big House of Hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You guys have suffered tragedy that our family identified with a little bit in the loss of our granddaughter Molly who lived seven days.\u00a0 I know our listeners would just like to know: how are you guys doing?\u00a0 My daughter and son-in-law went on to lose another child within 12 months so there were two children buried in the same grave.\u00a0 On that grave is a little plaque that has an inscription that we found in England that said, \u201cWe cannot Lord, Thy purpose see.\u00a0 But all is well that\u2019s done by Thee.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s a by-faith statement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You don\u2019t make it emotionally.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know that you make it intellectually.\u00a0 It really is a profoundly spiritual statement to believe that God is working purposes.\u00a0 But, just share with our listeners how you\u2019re doing.\u00a0 Steven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, we are on the journey and somebody recently said, \u201cHow are you doing today?\u00a0 One to ten.\u201d And I put, \u201cone to ten.\u201d\u00a0 That was my answer.\u00a0 I said it almost is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You experience it all in one day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This fifteen minutes we\u2019re doing really, really well.\u00a0 Then, there are steps forwards, steps backwards.\u00a0 But, at the same time we stand back and say, \u201cMiraculously well\u201d when we do stop and remember what the last two year journey has been.\u00a0 Where we are and where we\u2019ve been.\u00a0 We talk about Will Franklin being a walking miracle just in what we\u2019ve seen God do in his life and his heart.\u00a0 All of our kids are doing incredibly well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet, you say that and you feel\u2014we\u2019re just so fiercely committed to honesty now, because that\u2019s what has ministered to us so much in this time. I don\u2019t even want to say \u201cministered\u201d it\u2019s too nice a word.\u00a0 It\u2019s what has kept us alive and breathing.\u00a0 The honesty in the Psalms to be able to look and say, it\u2019s OK to say, \u201cGod where are you?\u00a0 What is going on?\u00a0 We\u2019re going under.\u201d\u00a0 Then we see God come in and amaze us and\u2014it\u2019s like breathing oxygen back into us literally.\u00a0 We see it in our children, and we see it in each other.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe understand why so many families don\u2019t survive the tragic loss of a child.\u00a0 You look at that at the beginning and go, \u201cHow could this ever separate us?\u00a0 Surely this will make us stronger.\u201d\u00a0 But grief and that journey is so dark, and there\u2019s nothing to prepare you for it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let me ask you about what you\u2019ve gone through as a family, how has it affected your relationship with one another? Because, oftentimes in a situation like this, couples can find themselves moving away from one another.\u00a0 What has it been like for you guys?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Steven and I have always done everything together.\u00a0 I mean, we decided everything together.\u00a0 We\u2019ve entered into everything together.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been part of following his career and keeping the home fires burning.\u00a0 Then, something like this comes along.\u00a0 He may be having a relatively decent day, and I\u2019m over here just dying.\u00a0 Yet, a mother grieves differently than father, husband grieves differently than wife.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI quickly became mother hen, I forgot about myself because I had trauma on all sides.\u00a0 I had Will Franklin\u2014everybody was home that day.\u00a0 I talked to my friend maybe four or five days after the accident.\u00a0 Beth Moore called me.\u00a0 She just said, \u201cYou need to know, the enemy came, and he came for all of you that day.\u00a0 He took one fell swoop.\u201d\u00a0 I just stepped back and looked at it, and I could see that.\u00a0 But at the same time, on the other hand I\u2019m thinking, \u201cI can see that, but where was God?\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s the anger you feel towards God, but then He\u2019ll meet you in ways you never expected, and there are sweet times.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI became this protector of Will and Caleb and how they were doing.\u00a0 Our other two little girls were there and saw the accident.\u00a0 So immediately you go into survival mode for them, and try to get them the right kind of help.\u00a0 So, that alone separated us for a while.\u00a0 It became this really dark, dark place.\u00a0 Then we would have days where you felt like God was breaking through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I speak to women about it though, the first thing I always say is, \u201cI love reading stories.\u00a0 We\u2019ve gotten thousands and thousands of letters.\u00a0 I love reading through them, and I love hearing the stories of how their lives have changed, or how they\u2019re living their life differently.\u00a0 There\u2019s even a handful of letters that we\u2019ve gotten where people came to know Christ through this tragedy.\u00a0 I love to hear that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I always say, \u201cI\u2019d rather have Maria.\u00a0 I\u2019d rather have Maria back.\u00a0 I\u2019m a mom, and God gave me those feelings and that heart.\u00a0 I would still rather push the rewind button.\u201d\u00a0 I always say, we\u2019ll never get over it, but we\u2019ll continue to push through it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, given the circumstances that the Chapman family has been through over the last couple of years, that kind of statement, \u201cOur God is in control,\u201d is a statement you make by faith.\u00a0 Because, you look at circumstances and you go, \u201cI don\u2019t understand this.\u201d\u00a0 If God is not in control, then nothing makes sense.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 For somebody who has experienced what Steven Curtis and Mary Beth have, that\u2019s not just some kind of trite religious saying.\u00a0 That really is a reality in their lives that they\u2019ve had to come to grips with.\u00a0 Do they really believe that God does rule sovereignly?\u00a0 I know many days, undoubtedly, as they\u2019ve just talked about, their faith has wavered.\u00a0 They\u2019ve had moments of doubt--maybe even, more than moments\u2014days and weeks of doubt.\u00a0 But, they have emerged coming through this, I think importantly, with a personal faith in Christ, but also, a corporate faith in Christ as a couple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s the message, Bob for couples who are listening to Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman.\u00a0 If you\u2019re going through something that\u2019s difficult, there are two ways you can go through it.\u00a0 You can either go through it together, or you can go through it alone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs a couple, I think God wants us to, even as imperfect as we are, merge our hearts to one another and say, \u201cWe\u2019re going to stick this out together.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to go the distance.\u00a0 Our faith is going to ultimately be in the God who is in Maria.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What\u2019s kept us alive and breathing is the honesty in the Psalms.\u00a0 To be able to look and say, it\u2019s OK to say, \u201cGod, where are you?\u00a0 What is going on?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday September 2nd.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear from Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman today about life without their daughter Maria.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had a great conversation going on this week with Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman.\u00a0 Back\u2014when was it?\u00a0 April?\u00a0 End of April right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You and I were together up in Minneapolis for an event that Steven Curtis and Mary Beth were also attending.\u00a0 This is an event, actually this has got some history, because, this was the sixth annual event like this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 It\u2019s the Orphan Summit. The first two were held here at FamilyLife.\u00a0 The third one was held at Focus on the Family.\u00a0 The fourth one was held in Fort Lauderdale at Calvary Chapel.\u00a0 The fifth one was in Irving, Texas.\u00a0 We had about, I think about 700-800 people at that one.\u00a0 This one, as you mentioned, was in Minneapolis, and we had over 1300 people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe cool thing about this, folks\u2014I wish you could go to this.\u00a0 Because, it\u2019s 1300 people who are all passionate about the plight of the orphan.\u00a0 Children who are in foster care, the whole issue of adoption.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got agencies there.\u00a0 You have foundations that are giving away money for adoption there.\u00a0 You\u2019ve have individual laymen and women who are championing the orphan ministry in their local church and making a difference by tying their church into, maybe an orphanage in a foreign country, or perhaps in their state around the foster care issues.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is something that the Christian Alliance for the Orphan is hosting.\u00a0 In fact, FamilyLife, our Hope for Orphans outreach, together with Steven Curtis and Mary Beth and the Show Hope foundation that they\u2019ve put together, Focus on the Family.\u00a0 All of us have gotten together to say, \u201cThis issue is an important issue, and we\u2019ve got to come together to address it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We\u2019re going to lock arms and, together give one single voice on behalf of the orphan.\u00a0 Coming up in November, the weekend of November 5-7, Francis and Lisa Chan are going to help host Orphan Sunday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes. This is a one-hour webcast that the team has put together that churches can use as a part of the worship service, or in a Sunday school class or, as a special event to draw attention to the needs of orphans all around the world.\u00a0 And, to talk together about ways in which the church can be mobilized to be a part of the answer for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe should also mention that the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Orphan Summit is scheduled for the end of next April, 2011.\u00a0 That\u2019s going to be in Louisville, Kentucky at Southeast Christian Church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m looking forward just to going to that church.\u00a0 It has 25,000 members. I\u2019m looking forward to seeing how you put together that large of a facility.\u00a0 But, that church is a true champion on behalf of the orphan.\u00a0 You know folks, you ought to go to FamilyLifeToday.com and get more information about these events that are coming up and find out how you and your church can help champion and give voice to those who have none.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We sat down while we were there at the Orphan Summit in Minneapolis with Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman and asked them for an update on some of what\u2019s happening through the Show Hope foundation.\u00a0 All you had to do was tap lightly on the door, and they busted it down.\u00a0 Because, they\u2019re pretty excited about what God is doing and how God is working through the tragedy they went through as a family a couple of years ago, in the loss of their daughter Maria\u2019s life.\u00a0 How the response of people to that is bringing hope and care to thousands of orphans in China.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>(<\/strong>Interview setting)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I am told by friends who know\u2014and I haven\u2019t done this yet\u2014but I am told if you fly into\u2014and I\u2019ve never done this\u2014Luo Yong China, from the air as you\u2019re flying in, you can see Maria\u2019s Big House of Hope.\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes sir.\u00a0 If the smog\u2019s not\u2026\u00a0 If the pollution is kind of low.\u00a0 On a good day\u2026 But, yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s just been an interesting partnership with the Chinese government.\u00a0 For some reason with us adopting our daughters.\u00a0 Then with him being invited back to sing.\u00a0 It\u2019s like there\u2019s this little cloud parked over China where we have this bit of favor for the time being.\u00a0 The Chinese government has given us this plot of land to build a special needs orphanage to house and provide medical care for these little ones, because there are so many of them.\u00a0 They are the least of the least, the special needs orphans in China.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, at first it started out as a vision that we\u2019ll build this place and at the time the working title was Shohannah\u2019s Hope Healing Home.\u00a0 Because Show Hope used to be called Shohannah\u2019s Hope, then no one could say it, and no one could find it.\u00a0 That got confusing.\u00a0 Then when we nicknamed it Show Hope, it was like.\u00a0 \u201cHey!\u00a0 That\u2019s what we try to do!\u201d\u00a0 So we\u2019ll call it that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey gave us this piece of land. We build what we thought was a decently sized building. We thought, working with our partners in China\u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFast forward.\u00a0 In 2008 when we lost Maria, there was such an outpouring of God\u2019s people.\u00a0\u00a0 Just praying for us and lifting us up.\u00a0 From the outpouring of so many people loving us the Maria\u2019s Miracle Fund was created.\u00a0 Through the funding of that we were able to complete the building and it hit me one day, it accidentally got bigger than we thought so we named it \u201cMaria\u2019s Big House of Hope.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs for being able to spot it from the sky:\u00a0 There\u2019s a part of Maria\u2019s Big House that sticks up a big square.\u00a0 We worked in conjunction with the Chinese government.\u00a0 The name of that part of the government is \u201cThe Blue Sky Foundation.\u201d\u00a0 The way I understand the story.\u00a0 They had painted the part that stuck up with blue clouds.\u00a0 Like a Nike symbol, or Reebok, like their signature.\u00a0 Through broken translation they asked Robin, our partner, \u201cDo you like that?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cIt looks great, we love it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, he and his family live in Beijing so he flew down a month later to check on the progress.\u00a0 And, the whole six floor--\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Six story, 60,000 square feet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The whole building is bright sky blue with white clouds all over it.\u00a0 So, you can see it from the air when you land on a good day.\u00a0\u00a0 People know right where it\u2019s at.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It looks like the set of Toy Story or something.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It does it looks like Toy Story.\u00a0 I can just picture Maria going, \u201cHey God, let\u2019s make them paint the whole thing blue.\u201d\u00a0 The last time I was there\u2014this is no joke\u2014the last time I was there, we pulled out in search of paintbrushes.\u00a0 So we pulled in a different direction I had never been. 300 yards down the road on the right, there\u2019s this little building it\u2019s painted bright blue with white clouds.\u00a0 I asked our driver, \u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d\u00a0 They went, \u201cOh, that\u2019s the tire store.\u00a0 But they love how that\u2019s painted, so they painted theirs that way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, before long all of China is going to have blue houses with clouds on them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s unbelievable.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t even mean to do it.\u00a0 That\u2019s Maria\u2019s Big House of Hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You guys have suffered tragedy that our family identified with a little bit in the loss of our granddaughter Molly who lived seven days.\u00a0 I know our listeners would just like to know: how are you guys doing?\u00a0 My daughter and son-in-law went on to lose another child within 12 months so there were two children buried in the same grave.\u00a0 On that grave is a little plaque that has an inscription that we found in England that said, \u201cWe cannot Lord, Thy purpose see.\u00a0 But all is well that\u2019s done by Thee.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s a by-faith statement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You don\u2019t make it emotionally.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know that you make it intellectually.\u00a0 It really is a profoundly spiritual statement to believe that God is working purposes.\u00a0 But, just share with our listeners how you\u2019re doing.\u00a0 Steven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, we are on the journey and somebody recently said, \u201cHow are you doing today?\u00a0 One to ten.\u201d And I put, \u201cone to ten.\u201d\u00a0 That was my answer.\u00a0 I said it almost is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You experience it all in one day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This fifteen minutes we\u2019re doing really, really well.\u00a0 Then, there are steps forwards, steps backwards.\u00a0 But, at the same time we stand back and say, \u201cMiraculously well\u201d when we do stop and remember what the last two year journey has been.\u00a0 Where we are and where we\u2019ve been.\u00a0 We talk about Will Franklin being a walking miracle just in what we\u2019ve seen God do in his life and his heart.\u00a0 All of our kids are doing incredibly well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet, you say that and you feel\u2014we\u2019re just so fiercely committed to honesty now, because that\u2019s what has ministered to us so much in this time. I don\u2019t even want to say \u201cministered\u201d it\u2019s too nice a word.\u00a0 It\u2019s what has kept us alive and breathing.\u00a0 The honesty in the Psalms to be able to look and say, it\u2019s OK to say, \u201cGod where are you?\u00a0 What is going on?\u00a0 We\u2019re going under.\u201d\u00a0 Then we see God come in and amaze us and\u2014it\u2019s like breathing oxygen back into us literally.\u00a0 We see it in our children, and we see it in each other.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe understand why so many families don\u2019t survive the tragic loss of a child.\u00a0 You look at that at the beginning and go, \u201cHow could this ever separate us?\u00a0 Surely this will make us stronger.\u201d\u00a0 But grief and that journey is so dark, and there\u2019s nothing to prepare you for it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let me ask you about what you\u2019ve gone through as a family, how has it affected your relationship with one another? Because, oftentimes in a situation like this, couples can find themselves moving away from one another.\u00a0 What has it been like for you guys?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Steven and I have always done everything together.\u00a0 I mean, we decided everything together.\u00a0 We\u2019ve entered into everything together.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been part of following his career and keeping the home fires burning.\u00a0 Then, something like this comes along.\u00a0 He may be having a relatively decent day, and I\u2019m over here just dying.\u00a0 Yet, a mother grieves differently than father, husband grieves differently than wife.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI quickly became mother hen, I forgot about myself because I had trauma on all sides.\u00a0 I had Will Franklin\u2014everybody was home that day.\u00a0 I talked to my friend maybe four or five days after the accident.\u00a0 Beth Moore called me.\u00a0 She just said, \u201cYou need to know, the enemy came, and he came for all of you that day.\u00a0 He took one fell swoop.\u201d\u00a0 I just stepped back and looked at it, and I could see that.\u00a0 But at the same time, on the other hand I\u2019m thinking, \u201cI can see that, but where was God?\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s the anger you feel towards God, but then He\u2019ll meet you in ways you never expected, and there are sweet times.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI became this protector of Will and Caleb and how they were doing.\u00a0 Our other two little girls were there and saw the accident.\u00a0 So immediately you go into survival mode for them, and try to get them the right kind of help.\u00a0 So, that alone separated us for a while.\u00a0 It became this really dark, dark place.\u00a0 Then we would have days where you felt like God was breaking through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I speak to women about it though, the first thing I always say is, \u201cI love reading stories.\u00a0 We\u2019ve gotten thousands and thousands of letters.\u00a0 I love reading through them, and I love hearing the stories of how their lives have changed, or how they\u2019re living their life differently.\u00a0 There\u2019s even a handful of letters that we\u2019ve gotten where people came to know Christ through this tragedy.\u00a0 I love to hear that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I always say, \u201cI\u2019d rather have Maria.\u00a0 I\u2019d rather have Maria back.\u00a0 I\u2019m a mom, and God gave me those feelings and that heart.\u00a0 I would still rather push the rewind button.\u201d\u00a0 I always say, we\u2019ll never get over it, but we\u2019ll continue to push through it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, given the circumstances that the Chapman family has been through over the last couple of years, that kind of statement, \u201cOur God is in control,\u201d is a statement you make by faith.\u00a0 Because, you look at circumstances and you go, \u201cI don\u2019t understand this.\u201d\u00a0 If God is not in control, then nothing makes sense.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 For somebody who has experienced what Steven Curtis and Mary Beth have, that\u2019s not just some kind of trite religious saying.\u00a0 That really is a reality in their lives that they\u2019ve had to come to grips with.\u00a0 Do they really believe that God does rule sovereignly?\u00a0 I know many days, undoubtedly, as they\u2019ve just talked about, their faith has wavered.\u00a0 They\u2019ve had moments of doubt--maybe even, more than moments\u2014days and weeks of doubt.\u00a0 But, they have emerged coming through this, I think importantly, with a personal faith in Christ, but also, a corporate faith in Christ as a couple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s the message, Bob for couples who are listening to Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman.\u00a0 If you\u2019re going through something that\u2019s difficult, there are two ways you can go through it.\u00a0 You can either go through it together, or you can go through it alone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs a couple, I think God wants us to, even as imperfect as we are, merge our hearts to one another and say, \u201cWe\u2019re going to stick this out together.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to go the distance.\u00a0 Our faith is going to ultimately be in the God who is in control.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, Mary Beth has invited all of us into the reality of what this experience has been like for her
