I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We will hear from Pastor James Ford today about how God got his attention and transformed his life and his marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>; thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I was sitting here trying to think, \u201cWhen did I develop a well-formed understanding of God\u2019s purpose for marriage?\u201d\u00a0 All I can think is it was a long time after I said, \u201cI do.\u201d\u00a0 You know.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how many people before they say, \u201cI do,\u201d have a well-formed idea of God\u2019s purposes for marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Maybe a seminary graduate.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(laughter) We just know our purpose for marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a little different than God\u2019s purpose for marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is, but we have a gentleman with us in the studio who knows seven reasons why God created marriage.\u00a0 James Ford joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019m excited you are here today, James.\u00a0 We are always excited about having preachers join us on the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am excited, too, Dennis.\u00a0 This is a privilege for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is our privilege as well.\u00a0 James is the senior pastor at Christ Bible Church, which is formally South Shore Baptist Church.\u00a0 Where would you think South Shore Baptist Church might be located?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That would be somewhere in the Florida Keys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Miami.\u00a0 Are we right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(laughter) You are off just a little bit.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Try a couple thousand miles?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m telling you, we are in the heart of inner city Chicago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I knew it all along.\u00a0 He and his wife, Leslie, have been married for more than 39 years.\u00a0 They have five children and nine grandchildren.\u00a0 Back to Bob\u2019s point here:\u00a0 When did you first really begin to grapple over God\u2019s purposes for marriage?\u00a0 Did you get it from your mom and dad growing up in the home you grew up in?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I didn\u2019t get it from my mother, and I certainly didn\u2019t get it from my father because he was never in the home.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, I never even met him.\u00a0 I had my first view of him when I was 26 years old.\u00a0 I was able to get in contact with an aunt, my only aunt on his side.\u00a0 She sent me a picture of him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That was the first time you saw your father?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When I was 26 years old.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you ever meet him face-to-face?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I never met him face-to-face.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The irony of it is\u2014even though he had no influence in my life, I ended up doing the same thing that he did.\u00a0 He was in prison in Tallahassee, Florida, for pushing drugs.\u00a0 Ironically, that is what I ended up doing as well and never had his influence on my life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So you were what\u2014in high school, in college\u2014you were starting to getting involved in using drugs and passing them on to others?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In high school, but after I left the military is when I started actually dealing drugs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Were you married at the time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So tell me how you met your wife and how you decided to get married in the first place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, to the previous question you asked about formation:\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have that\u2014not only was my father not there but my mom had nine other children.\u00a0 I have nine siblings by three different fathers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What was your perspective of marriage growing up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you didn\u2019t have it modeled for you and you didn\u2019t have any instruction, why didn\u2019t you follow the pattern you had seen in your own home of just being one of those guys who drops in from time to time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Because when I was 11 years old, I started working.\u00a0 I worked to help my mom.\u00a0 She was on welfare\u2014we grew up on welfare.\u00a0 I worked to help her.\u00a0 I was exposed at this hot dog shop\u2014I was a curb boy.\u00a0 I would start at 7:00 and work until 1:00 in the morning at 11 years old. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was exposed to smoking cigarettes; I was exposed to marijuana reefer; I was exposed to older women\u201418, 19\u2014they would come in.\u00a0 I got exposed to all those kinds of things.\u00a0 That is how I got started.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>At the age of 11!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>At 11.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 At 11. Yes.\u00a0 As I began to get involved in all these things and began to see that my mom had different boyfriends coming in\u2014I knew it wasn\u2019t my uncle; it wasn\u2019t my cousin, as she was saying.\u00a0 I began to form that kind of comprehension of what relationships were all about.\u00a0 It was all about sex.\u00a0 It was like that was my focus.\u00a0 That was my goal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met my wife-to-be when she was the grand old age of 8 and I was 12.\u00a0 When I first met her\u2014the first day I met her\u2014I told her I was going to marry her.\u00a0 At least I had a concept of sex in marriage, but we began to \u201cdate.\u201d\u00a0 We grew up together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe got pregnant at 16.\u00a0 I was 19, getting ready to be 20.\u00a0 I knew that this was my child.\u00a0 I had made a promise to my mom and to myself that if I ever got anybody pregnant, I would marry them based on the fact that I didn\u2019t have a father in my life.\u00a0 I was angry because there wasn\u2019t a man in my life.\u00a0 I did marry her; but it was\u2014I was pushing drugs; I was sleeping around.\u00a0 We got married, but our marriage wasn\u2019t very effective.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Was she involved in the drug culture as well that you were giving your life to at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 She was, too.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, she told me later on she would steal the drugs\u2014 drugs that I would be selling\u2014she would steal them and be getting high by herself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>At 16 she is pregnant; you are almost 20.\u00a0 The two of you decide to \u201ctie the knot\u201d and your reason for marriage at that time was to be the present father that you never had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 That was it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In spite of all the dysfunction that was going on with the drug use and abuse and with the lack of really a cohesive structure in your family, that marriage held together\u2014at least for a while.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>For three years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>At the end of three years, it was starting to head south\u2014wasn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was unraveling because sin perverts you.\u00a0 I started getting more perverted, more perverted, and doing other things.\u00a0 Then my wife found about it.\u00a0 That really floored her.\u00a0 She told me later on\u2014she told me that was what caused her to decide, \u201cHe really doesn\u2019t love me like I thought he does.\u00a0 Why should I even be faithful to him?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>At this point in your life, no spiritual light is going on of any kind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 None whatsoever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But you worked in a place where there was a guy...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Explain to our listeners because they have to hear you describe him as you shared earlier with Bob and me\u2014exactly how you described him.\u00a0 Now, don\u2019t cut any slack here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Shoot straight with our listeners, alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Alright.\u00a0 His name is Ray Reno.\u00a0 I call him Ridge-Running Whoopee From Tennessee.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 When I first met him, there were only two things wrong with him.\u00a0 No. 1:\u00a0 He was white; and No 2:\u00a0 He was southern white, ya\u2019ll.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 I tell people facetiously that I was so racist that I would not even eat white rice.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 I was so racist that I would not take aspirin because you had to pull cotton out of it before you got to the aspirin.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI worked at a paper factory in Pittsburgh.\u00a0 I was a low-bed trucker.\u00a0 This guy\u2014he would witness about the Lord\u2014you would know where Ray was because you would see a flood of people at lunchtime, running out...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Scattering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Just scattering.\u00a0 Man, I tell you\u2014like roaches when you turn on the light.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He repelled them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, man.\u00a0 You just get in the crowd because that guy who wants to talk about Jesus is behind us.\u00a0 One day he catches me in the cafeteria.\u00a0 I am sitting down by myself.\u00a0 I should have known that something was wrong because no one else was in the cafeteria.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe sits down beside me and he looks at me with that big old grin.\u00a0 He says, \u201cHi!\u00a0 How are you doing?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI\u2019m doing fine.\u00a0 How are you?\u201d\u00a0 He says, \u201cOh, I\u2019m doing fine.\u00a0 What you got there?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cIt\u2019s just a sandwich.\u00a0 You know\u2014some bread, some meat.\u201d\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 He said, (with a heavy drawl) \u201cBread?\u00a0 Did you know that Jesus Christ was the bread of life?\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cMan, I got to get away from this guy.\u201d\u00a0 I just left.\u00a0 I used to sell drugs on the job, and he was bad for business.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happened was\u2014I was a low-bed trucker.\u00a0 I was coming into a station to drop a load so that it could be corrugated.\u00a0 I saw him on a ladder working.\u00a0 I said, \u201cOh, no.\u00a0 I got to get away from this guy.\u00a0 I am going to drop this load and get out of here real fast.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI came in too fast; I dropped the load too soon.\u00a0 He grabbed me\u2014he had come down from the ladder.\u00a0 He grabbed me\u2014pulled me out of the way and bam!\u00a0 The load had crashed where I was.\u00a0 The way it was situated\u2014if it had hit me, it would have maimed me or cut me in half.\u00a0 It could have done some real damage because a load weighs on the average of 800 lbs. to a ton.\u00a0 I said to him\u2014I looked at him with my eyes all big, my mouth dropped open.\u00a0 I said, \u201cMan!\u00a0 You probably saved my life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, (with a heavy drawl) \u201cLife!\u00a0 Do you know that Jesus Christ saved our life?\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI don\u2019t want to hear this.\u201d\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 Then something\u2014in my mind\u2014\u201cHe just saved your life.\u00a0 The least you can do is listen to him.\u201d\u00a0 He gave me the first witness of the gospel of Jesus Christ that I could remember.\u00a0 I went back through the museum of my mind to see, \u201cHad anybody ever told me this before?\u201d\u00a0 Even when I sat in church\u2014no one had ever told me that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh who died, was buried, and rose again the third day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, at that time\u2014you know the Bible says that when the Word is planted, Satan snatches it.\u00a0 But he planted that Word.\u00a0 A few days later my wife and I were getting ready to go to the divorce court.\u00a0 We were getting ready to separate.\u00a0 I told her, \u201cYou know, let\u2019s not be enemies.\u00a0 I definitely want to see my son and take care of him, but I am leaving.\u00a0 You stay here.\u00a0 In the morning, I am gone.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said to her\u2014sin is perverted\u2014I said, \u201cCan we have one last night together before I leave in the morning?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 So we are sitting there on side of the bed.\u00a0 We are smoking a reefer and drinking what is called Robitussin.\u00a0 It is a cough syrup, but back then we used to use it to enhance our high.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were sitting there doing that.\u00a0 We were high as the proverbial kite.\u00a0 She says to me, \u201cWhat about Jay?\u201d\u00a0 That is my oldest son.\u00a0 He was my only son at the time.\u00a0 When she said that\u2014I know now\u2014hindsight is 20-20\u2014that it was the Holy Spirit who was bringing conviction on me because when my mother told me what my father had done to me, I was very angry.\u00a0 I said to her, \u201cIf I ever have a child, I will never abandon my child.\u00a0 I will never do what my daddy did to me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere I was, getting ready to do the same thing to my child that my father had done to me.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know it then, but I know it now.\u00a0 The Holy Spirit used that to convict me of my sin.\u00a0 I tell people all the time, \u201cI\u2019m a good Baptist boy, but I felt that high in me be poured out like a glass of water.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You are speaking of the high you had on drugs.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was gone.\u00a0 I was cold sober.\u00a0 The first words out of my mouth because I kept hearing\u2014I kept hearing\u2014I kept hearing this voice.\u00a0 \u201cBeau.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s my nickname.\u00a0 (with a heavy drawl) \u201cBeau, no matter what your problem is, Jesus Christ is the answer.\u201d\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 It just kept going in my head.\u00a0 That Word that he gave me\u2014I realized, \u201cMan!\u00a0 I\u2019m in trouble.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first thing I did was I fell prostrate on the floor.\u00a0 I began to cry out to God, \u201cPlease don\u2019t hurt me because I didn\u2019t know You were there.\u00a0 Please don\u2019t hurt me.\u201d\u00a0 Like the reality of His existence hit me like a ton of bricks.\u00a0 No one had to tell me that I was a sinner because I had a PhD in it, you know.\u00a0 I said, \u201cMan!\u00a0 I\u2019m in trouble.\u201d\u00a0 Those words:\u00a0 \u201cthat God commended His love toward us\u201d and \u201cthat while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs best I could, I said, \u201cGod, I just give myself to You.\u201d\u00a0 I was looking at my wife because I thought she would say, \u201cYou gone crazy?\u201d\u00a0 But she was cold sober, too.\u00a0 When I told her this, she said, \u201cYou\u2019re right.\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\u201d\u00a0 That night we both gave our lives to Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She became a Christian at the same point you did?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>S<\/strong>ame time.\u00a0 Same time.\u00a0 I tell people, \u201cI vaguely remember, but it was September 29, 1974, between 11:30 pm and 12 am at 7372 Formosa Way, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15208.\u00a0 I was on the right side of the bed, the side closest to the alley...\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You barely remember.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Vaguely.\u00a0 I vaguely remember that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was transformation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh!\u00a0 It was...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The encounter with Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh.\u00a0 It was total transformation.\u00a0 That night we stayed up until 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning.\u00a0 Then I had to get up early to go to work.\u00a0 I decided, \u201cI\u2019m not going to tell anybody about this,\u201d because I had a reputation on the job.\u00a0 I knew I was going to be terminated, but on my way out\u2014Ray was up on a ladder working\u2014he was an electrician.\u00a0 I broke free and I ran to the base of the ladder.\u00a0 I said, \u201cMan, me and my wife found God last night!\u00a0 What you told me kept going through my head.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came down and embraced me and said, \u201cYou didn\u2019t find God.\u00a0 God has never been lost.\u00a0 You and your wife have accepted Jesus Christ and have become believers in Him.\u00a0 Now you need to grow in the knowledge and grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And he went on to disciple you once a week for the next\u2014how long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Two and a half years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Even now\u2014I mean we are very close.\u00a0 He is ten years older than I am.\u00a0 We have been together for the whole thirty-some years that I have been a believer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You ended up going to Moody Bible, and he was there for your graduation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>For my graduation and when I graduated from Trinity.\u00a0 Every leg of the journey where you would want to look out and see a father, I looked out and saw him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got to tell you this story!\u00a0 I lived in an alley.\u00a0 It was called Drug Alley\u2014that was the nickname because there were a lot of young people.\u00a0 You could get any kind of drug you wanted.\u00a0 Whenever I flushed the drugs down the toilet\u2014I wasn\u2019t big time but I had two people push for me.\u00a0 They began to spread the word.\u00a0 We led 13 of our family and friends to Christ in three months\u2014the first three months of our conversion.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tClyde, who was the one I got my drugs from, lived in this alley, too.\u00a0 Of course, I had to pay him for the drugs I flushed down the toilet, but he came to me.\u00a0 We had been probably discipled by Ray somewhere close to three or four months, maybe.\u00a0 He came to me.\u00a0 He said, \u201cListen.\u00a0 That guy\u2014we think he is a Nark.\u00a0 We think you done rolled over.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo. No. No.\u00a0 I\u2019m a Christian now.\u00a0 I am saved, and he is a believer in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 He led me to Christ.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI don\u2019t know about all this stuff; but I tell you this:\u00a0 If he turns out to be a Nark and you done rolled over on us, you are a Snitch.\u00a0 You are dead.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wasn\u2019t worried about it, but I was worried about Ray.\u00a0 I said to Ray, I said, \u201cRay, listen, I sure appreciate your coming here to our community; but your life may be in danger.\u00a0 I have seen individuals shot for a $5 bag of drugs.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want anything to happen to you so I want to let you know.\u00a0 Maybe we could come to your house.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe told me\u2014he said, \u201cBeau, if Jesus Christ can shed His blood for us, then brother, I can shed my blood for you.\u201d\u00a0 I get choked up\u2014not as much as I used to.\u00a0 I used to just weep like a baby because here is a man\u2014you know\u2014that just met me four or five months ago, and he tells me he would give his life for me.\u00a0 You know, man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As you have been telling your story, James, I am just thinking of you and your wife as the world would view you guys\u2014a couple of druggies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Man, that\u2019s it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Selling, peddling drugs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Rejects.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Not much of any kind of purpose whatsoever.\u00a0 About to split the sheets as a couple.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking\u2014I have a quote by C.S. Lewis.\u00a0 He says, \u201cThere are no such things as mere mortals...\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>...but people who bear the imprint of the glory of God who are eternal beings.\u201d\u00a0 That is what you guys were.\u00a0 It took a guy from Tennessee to cut through the vibrato about drugs and dealing and share the gospel.\u00a0 To that person who may be listening today\u2014they may need to hear the words that James heard.\u00a0 Whatever you are facing, the answer to your problem\u2014to what you are facing right now\u2014is Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No matter what you are into\u2014the issue is:\u00a0 Whether you lay out on a floor like James did and prostrate himself before God and say, \u201cDon\u2019t kill me, God,\u201d \u201d but whatever you have done, repent, turn to Christ, and let\u2019s \u201cget with the program\u201d and start becoming who God created you to be.\u00a0 That is what life is all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I heard someone say one time, \u201cIf you don\u2019t think Jesus is the answer, you don\u2019t understand your problem.\u201d\u00a0 I think they are right.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t get to talk much about Pastor Ford\u2019s book...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, he has written a book about marriage; join us on the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am excited, too, Dennis.\u00a0 This is a privilege for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is our privilege as well.\u00a0 James is the senior pastor at Christ Bible Church, which is formally South Shore Baptist Church.\u00a0 Where would you think South Shore Baptist Church might be located?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That would be somewhere in the Florida Keys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Miami.\u00a0 Are we right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(laughter) You are off just a little bit.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Try a couple thousand miles?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m telling you, we are in the heart of inner city Chicago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I knew it all along.\u00a0 He and his wife, Leslie, have been married for more than 39 years.\u00a0 They have five children and nine grandchildren.\u00a0 Back to Bob\u2019s point here:\u00a0 When did you first really begin to grapple over God\u2019s purposes for marriage?\u00a0 Did you get it from your mom and dad growing up in the home you grew up in?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I didn\u2019t get it from my mother, and I certainly didn\u2019t get it from my father because he was never in the home.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, I never even met him.\u00a0 I had my first view of him when I was 26 years old.\u00a0 I was able to get in contact with an aunt, my only aunt on his side.\u00a0 She sent me a picture of him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That was the first time you saw your father?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When I was 26 years old.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you ever meet him face-to-face?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I never met him face-to-face.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The irony of it is\u2014even though he had no influence in my life, I ended up doing the same thing that he did.\u00a0 He was in prison in Tallahassee, Florida, for pushing drugs.\u00a0 Ironically, that is what I ended up doing as well and never had his influence on my life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So you were what\u2014in high school, in college\u2014you were starting to getting involved in using drugs and passing them on to others?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In high school, but after I left the military is when I started actually dealing drugs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Were you married at the time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So tell me how you met your wife and how you decided to get married in the first place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, to the previous question you asked about formation:\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have that\u2014not only was my father not there but my mom had nine other children.\u00a0 I have nine siblings by three different fathers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What was your perspective of marriage growing up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you didn\u2019t have it modeled for you and you didn\u2019t have any instruction, why didn\u2019t you follow the pattern you had seen in your own home of just being one of those guys who drops in from time to time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Because when I was 11 years old, I started working.\u00a0 I worked to help my mom.\u00a0 She was on welfare\u2014we grew up on welfare.\u00a0 I worked to help her.\u00a0 I was exposed at this hot dog shop\u2014I was a curb boy.\u00a0 I would start at 7:00 and work until 1:00 in the morning at 11 years old. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was exposed to smoking cigarettes; I was exposed to marijuana reefer; I was exposed to older women\u201418, 19\u2014they would come in.\u00a0 I got exposed to all those kinds of things.\u00a0 That is how I got started.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>At the age of 11!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>At 11.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 At 11. Yes.\u00a0 As I began to get involved in all these things and began to see that my mom had different boyfriends coming in\u2014I knew it wasn\u2019t my uncle; it wasn\u2019t my cousin, as she was saying.\u00a0 I began to form that kind of comprehension of what relationships were all about.\u00a0 It was all about sex.\u00a0 It was like that was my focus.\u00a0 That was my goal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met my wife-to-be when she was the grand old age of 8 and I was 12.\u00a0 When I first met her\u2014the first day I met her\u2014I told her I was going to marry her.\u00a0 At least I had a concept of sex in marriage, but we began to \u201cdate.\u201d\u00a0 We grew up together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe got pregnant at 16.\u00a0 I was 19, getting ready to be 20.\u00a0 I knew that this was my child.\u00a0 I had made a promise to my mom and to myself that if I ever got anybody pregnant, I would marry them based on the fact that I didn\u2019t have a father in my life.\u00a0 I was angry because there wasn\u2019t a man in my life.\u00a0 I did marry her; but it was\u2014I was pushing drugs; I was sleeping around.\u00a0 We got married, but our marriage wasn\u2019t very effective.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Was she involved in the drug culture as well that you were giving your life to at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 She was, too.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, she told me later on she would steal the drugs\u2014 drugs that I would be selling\u2014she would steal them and be getting high by herself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>At 16 she is pregnant; you are almost 20.\u00a0 The two of you decide to \u201ctie the knot\u201d and your reason for marriage at that time was to be the present father that you never had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 That was it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In spite of all the dysfunction that was going on with the drug use and abuse and with the lack of really a cohesive structure in your family, that marriage held together\u2014at least for a while.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>For three years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>At the end of three years, it was starting to head south\u2014wasn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was unraveling because sin perverts you.\u00a0 I started getting more perverted, more perverted, and doing other things.\u00a0 Then my wife found about it.\u00a0 That really floored her.\u00a0 She told me later on\u2014she told me that was what caused her to decide, \u201cHe really doesn\u2019t love me like I thought he does.\u00a0 Why should I even be faithful to him?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>At this point in your life, no spiritual light is going on of any kind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 None whatsoever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But you worked in a place where there was a guy...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Explain to our listeners because they have to hear you describe him as you shared earlier with Bob and me\u2014exactly how you described him.\u00a0 Now, don\u2019t cut any slack here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Shoot straight with our listeners, alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Alright.\u00a0 His name is Ray Reno.\u00a0 I call him Ridge-Running Whoopee From Tennessee.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 When I first met him, there were only two things wrong with him.\u00a0 No. 1:\u00a0 He was white; and No 2:\u00a0 He was southern white, ya\u2019ll.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 I tell people facetiously that I was so racist that I would not even eat white rice.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 I was so racist that I would not take aspirin because you had to pull cotton out of it before you got to the aspirin.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI worked at a paper factory in Pittsburgh.\u00a0 I was a low-bed trucker.\u00a0 This guy\u2014he would witness about the Lord\u2014you would know where Ray was because you would see a flood of people at lunchtime, running out...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Scattering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Just scattering.\u00a0 Man, I tell you\u2014like roaches when you turn on the light.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He repelled them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, man.\u00a0 You just get in the crowd because that guy who wants to talk about Jesus is behind us.\u00a0 One day he catches me in the cafeteria.\u00a0 I am sitting down by myself.\u00a0 I should have known that something was wrong because no one else was in the cafeteria.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe sits down beside me and he looks at me with that big old grin.\u00a0 He says, \u201cHi!\u00a0 How are you doing?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI\u2019m doing fine.\u00a0 How are you?\u201d\u00a0 He says, \u201cOh, I\u2019m doing fine.\u00a0 What you got there?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cIt\u2019s just a sandwich.\u00a0 You know\u2014some bread, some meat.\u201d\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 He said, (with a heavy drawl) \u201cBread?\u00a0 Did you know that Jesus Christ was the bread of life?\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cMan, I got to get away from this guy.\u201d\u00a0 I just left.\u00a0 I used to sell drugs on the job, and he was bad for business.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happened was\u2014I was a low-bed trucker.\u00a0 I was coming into a station to drop a load so that it could be corrugated.\u00a0 I saw him on a ladder working.\u00a0 I said, \u201cOh, no.\u00a0 I got to get away from this guy.\u00a0 I am going to drop this load and get out of here real fast.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI came in too fast; I dropped the load too soon.\u00a0 He grabbed me\u2014he had come down from the ladder.\u00a0 He grabbed me\u2014pulled me out of the way and bam!\u00a0 The load had crashed where I was.\u00a0 The way it was situated\u2014if it had hit me, it would have maimed me or cut me in half.\u00a0 It could have done some real damage because a load weighs on the average of 800 lbs. to a ton.\u00a0 I said to him\u2014I looked at him with my eyes all big, my mouth dropped open.\u00a0 I said, \u201cMan!\u00a0 You probably saved my life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, (with a heavy drawl) \u201cLife!\u00a0 Do you know that Jesus Christ saved our life?\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI don\u2019t want to hear this.\u201d\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 Then something\u2014in my mind\u2014\u201cHe just saved your life.\u00a0 The least you can do is listen to him.\u201d\u00a0 He gave me the first witness of the gospel of Jesus Christ that I could remember.\u00a0 I went back through the museum of my mind to see, \u201cHad anybody ever told me this before?\u201d\u00a0 Even when I sat in church\u2014no one had ever told me that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh who died, was buried, and rose again the third day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, at that time\u2014you know the Bible says that when the Word is planted, Satan snatches it.\u00a0 But he planted that Word.\u00a0 A few days later my wife and I were getting ready to go to the divorce court.\u00a0 We were getting ready to separate.\u00a0 I told her, \u201cYou know, let\u2019s not be enemies.\u00a0 I definitely want to see my son and take care of him, but I am leaving.\u00a0 You stay here.\u00a0 In the morning, I am gone.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said to her\u2014sin is perverted\u2014I said, \u201cCan we have one last night together before I leave in the morning?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 So we are sitting there on side of the bed.\u00a0 We are smoking a reefer and drinking what is called Robitussin.\u00a0 It is a cough syrup, but back then we used to use it to enhance our high.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were sitting there doing that.\u00a0 We were high as the proverbial kite.\u00a0 She says to me, \u201cWhat about Jay?\u201d\u00a0 That is my oldest son.\u00a0 He was my only son at the time.\u00a0 When she said that\u2014I know now\u2014hindsight is 20-20\u2014that it was the Holy Spirit who was bringing conviction on me because when my mother told me what my father had done to me, I was very angry.\u00a0 I said to her, \u201cIf I ever have a child, I will never abandon my child.\u00a0 I will never do what my daddy did to me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere I was, getting ready to do the same thing to my child that my father had done to me.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know it then, but I know it now.\u00a0 The Holy Spirit used that to convict me of my sin.\u00a0 I tell people all the time, \u201cI\u2019m a good Baptist boy, but I felt that high in me be poured out like a glass of water.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You are speaking of the high you had on drugs.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was gone.\u00a0 I was cold sober.\u00a0 The first words out of my mouth because I kept hearing\u2014I kept hearing\u2014I kept hearing this voice.\u00a0 \u201cBeau.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s my nickname.\u00a0 (with a heavy drawl) \u201cBeau, no matter what your problem is, Jesus Christ is the answer.\u201d\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 It just kept going in my head.\u00a0 That Word that he gave me\u2014I realized, \u201cMan!\u00a0 I\u2019m in trouble.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first thing I did was I fell prostrate on the floor.\u00a0 I began to cry out to God, \u201cPlease don\u2019t hurt me because I didn\u2019t know You were there.\u00a0 Please don\u2019t hurt me.\u201d\u00a0 Like the reality of His existence hit me like a ton of bricks.\u00a0 No one had to tell me that I was a sinner because I had a PhD in it, you know.\u00a0 I said, \u201cMan!\u00a0 I\u2019m in trouble.\u201d\u00a0 Those words:\u00a0 \u201cthat God commended His love toward us\u201d and \u201cthat while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs best I could, I said, \u201cGod, I just give myself to You.\u201d\u00a0 I was looking at my wife because I thought she would say, \u201cYou gone crazy?\u201d\u00a0 But she was cold sober, too.\u00a0 When I told her this, she said, \u201cYou\u2019re right.\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\u201d\u00a0 That night we both gave our lives to Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She became a Christian at the same point you did?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>S<\/strong>ame time.\u00a0 Same time.\u00a0 I tell people, \u201cI vaguely remember, but it was September 29, 1974, between 11:30 pm and 12 am at 7372 Formosa Way, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15208.\u00a0 I was on the right side of the bed, the side closest to the alley...\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You barely remember.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Vaguely.\u00a0 I vaguely remember that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was transformation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh!\u00a0 It was...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The encounter with Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh.\u00a0 It was total transformation.\u00a0 That night we stayed up until 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning.\u00a0 Then I had to get up early to go to work.\u00a0 I decided, \u201cI\u2019m not going to tell anybody about this,\u201d because I had a reputation on the job.\u00a0 I knew I was going to be terminated, but on my way out\u2014Ray was up on a ladder working\u2014he was an electrician.\u00a0 I broke free and I ran to the base of the ladder.\u00a0 I said, \u201cMan, me and my wife found God last night!\u00a0 What you told me kept going through my head.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came down and embraced me and said, \u201cYou didn\u2019t find God.\u00a0 God has never been lost.\u00a0 You and your wife have accepted Jesus Christ and have become believers in Him.\u00a0 Now you need to grow in the knowledge and grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And he went on to disciple you once a week for the next\u2014how long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Two and a half years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Even now\u2014I mean we are very close.\u00a0 He is ten years older than I am.\u00a0 We have been together for the whole thirty-some years that I have been a believer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You ended up going to Moody Bible, and he was there for your graduation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>For my graduation and when I graduated from Trinity.\u00a0 Every leg of the journey where you would want to look out and see a father, I looked out and saw him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got to tell you this story!\u00a0 I lived in an alley.\u00a0 It was called Drug Alley\u2014that was the nickname because there were a lot of young people.\u00a0 You could get any kind of drug you wanted.\u00a0 Whenever I flushed the drugs down the toilet\u2014I wasn\u2019t big time but I had two people push for me.\u00a0 They began to spread the word.\u00a0 We led 13 of our family and friends to Christ in three months\u2014the first three months of our conversion.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tClyde, who was the one I got my drugs from, lived in this alley, too.\u00a0 Of course, I had to pay him for the drugs I flushed down the toilet, but he came to me.\u00a0 We had been probably discipled by Ray somewhere close to three or four months, maybe.\u00a0 He came to me.\u00a0 He said, \u201cListen.\u00a0 That guy\u2014we think he is a Nark.\u00a0 We think you done rolled over.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo. No. No.\u00a0 I\u2019m a Christian now.\u00a0 I am saved, and he is a believer in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 He led me to Christ.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI don\u2019t know about all this stuff; but I tell you this:\u00a0 If he turns out to be a Nark and you done rolled over on us, you are a Snitch.\u00a0 You are dead.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wasn\u2019t worried about it, but I was worried about Ray.\u00a0 I said to Ray, I said, \u201cRay, listen, I sure appreciate your coming here to our community; but your life may be in danger.\u00a0 I have seen individuals shot for a $5 bag of drugs.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want anything to happen to you so I want to let you know.\u00a0 Maybe we could come to your house.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe told me\u2014he said, \u201cBeau, if Jesus Christ can shed His blood for us, then brother, I can shed my blood for you.\u201d\u00a0 I get choked up\u2014not as much as I used to.\u00a0 I used to just weep like a baby because here is a man\u2014you know\u2014that just met me four or five months ago, and he tells me he would give his life for me.\u00a0 You know, man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As you have been telling your story, James, I am just thinking of you and your wife as the world would view you guys\u2014a couple of druggies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Man, that\u2019s it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Selling, peddling drugs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Rejects.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Not much of any kind of purpose whatsoever.\u00a0 About to split the sheets as a couple.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking\u2014I have a quote by C.S. Lewis.\u00a0 He says, \u201cThere are no such things as mere mortals...\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>...but people who bear the imprint of the glory of God who are eternal beings.\u201d\u00a0 That is what you guys were.\u00a0 It took a guy from Tennessee to cut through the vibrato about drugs and dealing and share the gospel.\u00a0 To that person who may be listening today\u2014they may need to hear the words that James heard.\u00a0 Whatever you are facing, the answer to your problem\u2014to what you are facing right now\u2014is Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>James:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No matter what you are into\u2014the issue is:\u00a0 Whether you lay out on a floor like James did and prostrate himself before God and say, \u201cDon\u2019t kill me, God,\u201d \u201d but whatever you have done, repent, turn to Christ, and let\u2019s \u201cget with the program\u201d and start becoming who God created you to be.\u00a0 That is what life is all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I heard someone say one time, \u201cIf you don\u2019t think Jesus is the answer, you don\u2019t understand your problem.\u201d\u00a0 I think they are right.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t get to talk much about Pastor Ford\u2019s book...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, he has written a book about marriage;
