DeMoss:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you just took that verse in Proverbs 31, you would think there is something wrong with beauty.\u00a0 But I think that Proverbs 31 reference is to the world\u2019s view of beauty that is the outward, the visible, what you can see, and the writer there says that\u2019s not enough.\u00a0 There is another word which is used for beauty, and which is \u201cthe glory.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s what is good, what is wholesome, what is lasting, what is enduring.\u00a0 There is nothing wrong with beauty if it\u2019s God\u2019s beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You are.\u00a0 Every one of you is Today<\/em>, because we\u2019re going to hit a topic that\u2019s hot\u2013beauty.\u00a0 I had a woman ask me\u2013I said, \u201cWhat\u2019s your question about beauty that you want Bob and me to ask the experts on the broadcast this week?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said, \u201cI want to know how it can be that my husband can know how important beauty is to me and how important a compliment can be to me and how meaningful it can be to me and not say anything?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And not use it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And at that point, you said, Sharon Jaynes joins us.\u00a0 And Nancy Stafford.\u00a0 Ladies, welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>All:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Nancy Stafford is an actress, she is an author, a TV host, and she has written a book called <em>Beauty by the Book<\/em>.\u00a0 Sharon Jaynes is an author, speaker, and Nancy Leigh DeMoss is a partner in ministry here at FamilyLife.\u00a0 She is host of \u201cRevive Our Hearts.\u201d\u00a0 She is on staff with Life Action Ministry.\u00a0 She, too, is an author, a speaker, and a good friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was just reading Proverbs 31 in preparation, and I\u2019ve got a great question for you ladies, but I want to read this first.\u00a0 \u201cCharm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we start a series of broadcasts all this week on beauty, I need a working definition of beauty.\u00a0 You can each make a pass at this, or one of you can define it for all of us.\u00a0 What is a definition of beauty?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who wants to start on this?\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s gotten real quiet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sharon Jaynes:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I think of the word \u201cbeauty,\u201d and I had not thought of that definition until you just mentioned it, the first word that popped into my mind is \u201cglory,\u201d and the definition of glory is for something to be what God has created it to be.\u00a0 And when I think of beauty, I think of a woman is that we\u2019re being all that God has intended for us to be, and when I see a woman that is being all the God intended them to be, they are truly beautiful, and that encompasses the way they look.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod created women to be beautiful, and He spent six days creating the earth, and we were his grand finale.\u00a0 Then He said He was finished, and He took a rest.\u00a0 I don't know what that means, but we are created to be beautiful.\u00a0 But it\u2019s also the inner beauty, too, with our spirits and with our souls.\u00a0 When we are being truly beautiful, we are glorifying God and what He intended us to look like and to be like \u2013 outside and inside.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0That\u2019s a pretty good job.\u00a0 Any other thoughts on the subject?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Leigh DeMoss:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, you are quoting, Dennis, from Proverbs 31.\u00a0 There are a couple of different words in the original language that are translated \u201cbeauty\u201d in the Old Testament.\u00a0 One of those has to do with the outer appearance and, I\u2019m not sure, but I suppose that\u2019s probably the word being used there in Proverbs 31, because it says \u201cbeauty is vain.\u201d\u00a0 So it\u2019s talking about a certain kind of beauty that is empty or shallow or doesn\u2019t last.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t all there is to the picture\u2013there is something better than that kind of beauty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is another word that\u2019s used for beauty that\u2019s what Sharon was just talking about, which is the \u201cglory.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s what is good, what is wholesome, what is lasting, what is enduring.\u00a0 So if you just took that verse in Proverbs 31, you would think there is something wrong with beauty.\u00a0 There is nothing wrong with beauty if it\u2019s the whole picture, if it\u2019s God\u2019s picture.\u00a0 But I think that Proverbs 31 reference is to the world\u2019s view of beauty, which is just the focus on the outward, the visible, what you can see, and the writer there says that\u2019s not enough.\u00a0 That\u2019s shallow, if that\u2019s all you have, you don\u2019t have enough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As I was preparing for these broadcasts, I had the thought\u2013is a woman being beautiful a part of the image of God?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\u00a0 God Himself is beauty, and I think that the more we look like him, the more beautiful we truly become and, also, we were created in the image of beauty Himself, and I think He loves beauty.\u00a0 Look at nature.\u00a0 God is in the business of creating the most spectacular, the most glorious, the most incredible creation and we, of course, getting to be the best of His creation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut beauty is important to us, and I want to be sure that the listeners don\u2019t think that we\u2019re approaching this topic, either, from the idea that beauty should just be put aside; that we shouldn\u2019t have any kind of care about ourselves or respect or admiration for what God has made us to be, because don\u2019t you feel nourished when you walk through a gallery of incredible art; when you walk into a beautiful home or taste a wonderful meal?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are expressions of His creative beauty that He wants us to enjoy, and He wants us to make the most of what He made us to be.\u00a0 I think when we see ourselves in His own eyes we, then, too, become beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s where I think you\u2019ve hit on what is the challenge for so many women, because on one end of the spectrum there can be an obsession over appearance.\u00a0 On the other end of the spectrum, there can be an intentionality about being plain\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes. Vanilla.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026about not wanting to do anything that reflects any beauty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Leigh DeMoss:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was just reading, Bob, about one of the early church fathers who said to his congregation that was arrayed, he said, \u201cIn peacock-like outfits.\u201d\u00a0 These people cared a lot about materialism, and they were all decked out, and he chided his congregation about how ostentatious they were.\u00a0 A little old man stood up and said, \u201cSo what are we to wear?\u201d\u00a0 And he said, \u201cWhatever protects your body from the heat and the cold.\u201d\u00a0 That was to be it.\u00a0 And this man was dressed in this very plain, brown sack-looking robe, and that was his sense of what was appropriate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I think the enemy tends to take us to one of two extremes\u2013that outward appearance is everything or that it is nothing.\u00a0 And as Nancy just said, we have a God who created things that do appeal to the senses and the eyes.\u00a0 I think there\u2019s an appropriate way for us as women to have that kind of beauty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0So should you make it a goal, Sharon, to be an attractive woman?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sharon<\/strong> <strong>Jaynes<\/strong>:\u00a0 The way I look at it, Bob, is I am an ambassador of Christ.\u00a0 I am representing Jesus Christ in this world.\u00a0 And not only that, I think for married women\u2013God created men to be visual creatures, and if I were to say, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not going to care about how I look.\u00a0 It\u2019s okay if I gain 100 pounds.\u00a0 It\u2019s okay if he comes home after work, and I\u2019m still in my sweats with no makeup on and my hair pulled back.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, that\u2019s an affront to my husband and, for me, that says, \u201cI don\u2019t really care about you.\u00a0 I don\u2019t care what you want.\u201d\u00a0 So for me to take care of myself is honoring my husband, as well.\u00a0 I think many women need to think about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we\u2019re making a point here\u2013beauty matters.\u00a0 We can\u2019t push it in the closet, and can\u2019t go to the extreme of ignoring it\u2013beauty does matter.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m going to ask all three of you ladies to be honest about your own beauty, all right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the question:\u00a0 how much of your physical beauty is a part of who you are and your identity as a woman right now?\u00a0 I\u2019m not asking you what part you wish it would be, but right now, as a part of your day, as you get up, and you look in the mirror, and as you start your day on a 1 to 10 point scale, 10 being a lot of my identity is tied up in my physical beauty or number 1 being virtually none of my identity is tied up in it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, who would like to be first?\u00a0 On a 1-to-10-point scale.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll go first.\u00a0 I\u2019ll preface it, as you even prefaced it\u2013I wish it were not this number, but I think I am probably about a 5 on the scale.\u00a0 I\u2019m an actress.\u00a0 In normal life, if I were just living a normal life, I would be normal, I would look normal.\u00a0 I am hefty in Hollywood terms.\u00a0 I have gotten through mental pause, so I am in mental pause and going through, first, infertility treatments and then getting into the whole hormonal changes, I have gained weight, I am 20 pounds heavier than I want to be, and I am having a heck of a time losing it\u2013never had the problem before.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMany women are facing this problem.\u00a0 I am having a difficult time seeing my body change.\u00a0 I\u2019m seeing lines that I didn\u2019t used to have at almost 50 years old.\u00a0 I still think, by and large, I still look good, but what nags at me is my profession.\u00a0 What nags at me is I look at myself based on what that standard is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you\u2019re competing with some \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u00a0 oh, I\u2019m competing, not only against younger women, but women who have been surgically altered to look 30 who are actually 50.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019re going to talk about surgically altered \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026 and, unfortunately, because of my profession, that still frames too much of my self-perception.\u00a0 So that\u2019s \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 that\u2019s fair \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u2026 that\u2019s how I feel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sharon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sharon Jaynes:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019d have to say a 5 also, but I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s a bad thing.\u00a0 I feel pretty comfortable with a 5.\u00a0 You know, when I was growing up\u2013not raised in a Christian home \u2013 raised in a home where my parents fought a lot\u2013a lot of alcohol, a lot of violence.\u00a0 I always grew up thinking, \u201cIf I could be prettier, if I could be smarter,\u201d and I really struggled with all kinds of insecurities, and I wanted to be beautiful, and I did put a lot of weight on that as a young child, and then, as a teenager.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAmazingly, when I became a Christian at 14 through a mother in my neighborhood\u2013a mother of a friend of mine\u2013those feelings didn\u2019t go away.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t instantly say, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m a Christian now,\u201d and this is where I think a lot of Christian women struggle.\u00a0 They think, \u201cNow that I know the Lord, I shouldn\u2019t care so much about how I look.\u00a0 That shouldn\u2019t be such a big deal.\u00a0 It was still a big deal for me.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until I moved into my 30s, and I really started reading about who I was in Christ, where I was in Christ, what I had in Christ\u2013how God really saw me\u2013that I started to change the importance of my appearance.\u00a0 So I\u2019ve gone down from a 9 to a 5, and I\u2019m feeling pretty good about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I think a 5 is a good place to be because God, like we said earlier in the broadcast, we do need to care what we look like.\u00a0 That verse in Proverbs 31 that says beauty is vain, the actual word\u2013it means \u201cfleeting.\u201d\u00a0 So it is fleeting.\u00a0 It\u2019s something we need to realize is that as we grow older, we\u2019re not going to look like we\u2019re 18, we\u2019re not going to look like we\u2019re 30 when we\u2019re 50, and it\u2019s something we need to realize that what the culture says is beautiful, well, that is going to change.\u00a0 We can still be beautiful in a different way.\u00a0 So to answer your question, I\u2019d have to say I\u2019m sitting right there at a 5, and feeling okay about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, another thing that brings to my mind about that question is there was a time in my life when the first thing I did in the morning was to put on my makeup.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t take the trash out without having my makeup on.\u00a0 But now I can go all day and feel fine about it, but at 4:45 I might put on my makeup even if I haven\u2019t had it on all day, because I know that man that I love is getting ready to walk in the door, and I want to look good for him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s great.\u00a0 Nancy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Leigh DeMoss:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I just want to say to Nancy Stafford you don\u2019t have to be in Hollywood to battle those perceptions.\u00a0 You can be in full-time ministry.\u00a0 I also want to say that I\u2019m really thankful that I\u2019m in radio ministry and not TV ministry, because I think my number would be a lot higher if I had to be in front of a camera.\u00a0 I have a little niece who told me she would do my hair for my radio program, and I said that\u2019s the kind of hair I like to have to mess with, is where nobody can see it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll also tell you, Bob, that when your assistant called\u2013or e-mailed me\u2013to see if I would be on this panel, I had just come back from spending a very frustrating evening at the mall trying on clothes.\u00a0 I do this very rarely, and I had put on some weight, and I was very frustrated, I was very disgusted, and I didn\u2019t think I looked good in anything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got home looking very disheveled, having tried on all these clothes that didn\u2019t fit, didn\u2019t look good, and I got an e-mail from your assistant saying, \u201cWe\u2019re having a panel on beauty.\u00a0 Are you free that day?\u201d\u00a0 I said, my e-mail back was, \u201cDo you want me to be on this panel or just to listen?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m still laughing to myself because there is, in my own heart, even being in radio ministry where it doesn\u2019t really matter, in a way, this\u2013I would say\u2013you said you\u2019re at a 5, both you gals.\u00a0 I would say I waiver between about a 3 and a 7.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt any given point on a given day I might find myself being obsessed with what am I going to wear, what am I going to do if we\u2019re doing this videotaping?\u00a0 I have to think about hair and makeup and clothing and things I really don\u2019t want to mess with, but the gods of comparison, sinful comparison, and then what God takes me back to is the kind of beauty that really matters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t disappear, the kind that gets enhanced as you get older, that isn\u2019t vain, it\u2019s not shallow, it isn\u2019t fleeting.\u00a0 That\u2019s the beauty of the spirit, the beauty of the heart, and when I find myself\u2013that number going up high, and I\u2019m too obsessed with this physical stuff, what God does is pull me back and says, \u201cBe obsessed with the kind of beauty that is the beauty of the heart\u2013a radiant spirit, a radiant countenance, a love for Christ, a love for other people,\u201d and that pulls me back to the things that are eternal and really matter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love that, Nancy, and one of the things I keep remembering too, is Paul urging us and so that now is always Christ will be exalted in my body.\u00a0 That means no matter how old we are, no matter what we look like, he is exalted in my body, and that means in our countenance, in our demeanor, and all those things you are talking about that aren't necessarily about the clothes I'm wearing or how much my makeup looks good or if I've gained some weight.\u00a0 He is exalted in our bodies so that we can bear the appearance of Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Leigh DeMoss:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And Peter says that's an unfading kind of beauty.\u00a0 He's talking specifically to women\u2013the unfading beauty of a gentle and a quiet spirit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to commend all three of you on answering what was really a very unfair question.\u00a0 I mean, really, for a couple of guys to ask you all to rate yourselves around that, but I had to do it because we have listeners, literally, by the hundreds of thousands, millions of women who listen and, again, husbands who are married to them, who I felt, as you all were speaking around the table, were collectively breathing a sigh of relief because they were identifying with each one of you.\u00a0 You all three talked about struggle, you talked about contentment, and you talked about the ultimate inner beauty where we must come back to that is the only place where you find security.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt's not by going on TV and having a physical makeover of your hair and your makeup and other things, but it's a spiritual makeover\u2013it's the desire to learn who we are in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 I think both the husbands and wives and single women and, for that matter, the single men\u2013single men should listen up to these broadcasts, because this is a hot topic.\u00a0 This is important to a woman.\u00a0 Women spend a lot of time in front of the mirror because how they look, their beauty, is a representation of\u00a0 a part of who they are and who God made them to be as a woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll this week we're going to take on some issues.\u00a0 In fact, let me just tell you some of the issues we're going to take on.\u00a0 We're going to take on issues of being overweight, body shape and size, flaws, modesty, makeup, jewelry, body piercing, fashions, and how do we come to some kind of biblical pattern; some kind of place where we can be anchored in this cultural storm that swirls about us and, frankly, that's getting more and more difficult to determine what is truly wholesome in terms of beauty?\u00a0 What does honor God?\u00a0 And then how do we raise the next generation of young ladies?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have four daughters, and I know Barbara tried to do this\u2013we really tried to anchor them in Jesus Christ and who they are in terms of their identity in Him, but they are all four beautiful young ladies who need to dress appropriately and know how to understand their own beauty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I know you\u2019ve seen what our friends over at VeggieTales are doing on this.\u00a0 They\u2019ve just come out with a new DVD that\u2019s aimed at girls, called \u201cSweet Pea Beauty.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a re-telling of the Sleeping Beauty story, but it\u2019s all about how to think rightly about appearance beauty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had a woman ask me in preparation for these broadcasts\u2013and we are going to have a blast this week on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, because we\u2019re going to hit a topic that\u2019s hot\u2013beauty.\u00a0 I had a woman ask me\u2013I said, \u201cWhat\u2019s your question about beauty that you want Bob and me to ask the experts on the broadcast this week?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said, \u201cI want to know how it can be that my husband can know how important beauty is to me and how important a compliment can be to me and how meaningful it can be to me and not say anything?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And not use it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And at that point, you said, \u201cWell, Barbara, you look lovely.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was not Sharon Jaynes joins us.\u00a0 And Nancy Stafford.\u00a0 Ladies, welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>All:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Nancy Stafford is an actress, she is an author, a TV host, and she has written a book called <em>Beauty by the Book<\/em>.\u00a0 Sharon Jaynes is an author, speaker, and Nancy Leigh DeMoss is a partner in ministry here at FamilyLife.\u00a0 She is host of \u201cRevive Our Hearts.\u201d\u00a0 She is on staff with Life Action Ministry.\u00a0 She, too, is an author, a speaker, and a good friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was just reading Proverbs 31 in preparation, and I\u2019ve got a great question for you ladies, but I want to read this first.\u00a0 \u201cCharm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we start a series of broadcasts all this week on beauty, I need a working definition of beauty.\u00a0 You can each make a pass at this, or one of you can define it for all of us.\u00a0 What is a definition of beauty?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who wants to start on this?\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s gotten real quiet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sharon Jaynes:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I think of the word \u201cbeauty,\u201d and I had not thought of that definition until you just mentioned it, the first word that popped into my mind is \u201cglory,\u201d and the definition of glory is for something to be what God has created it to be.\u00a0 And when I think of beauty, I think of a woman is that we\u2019re being all that God has intended for us to be, and when I see a woman that is being all the God intended them to be, they are truly beautiful, and that encompasses the way they look.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod created women to be beautiful, and He spent six days creating the earth, and we were his grand finale.\u00a0 Then He said He was finished, and He took a rest.\u00a0 I don't know what that means, but we are created to be beautiful.\u00a0 But it\u2019s also the inner beauty, too, with our spirits and with our souls.\u00a0 When we are being truly beautiful, we are glorifying God and what He intended us to look like and to be like \u2013 outside and inside.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0That\u2019s a pretty good job.\u00a0 Any other thoughts on the subject?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Leigh DeMoss:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, you are quoting, Dennis, from Proverbs 31.\u00a0 There are a couple of different words in the original language that are translated \u201cbeauty\u201d in the Old Testament.\u00a0 One of those has to do with the outer appearance and, I\u2019m not sure, but I suppose that\u2019s probably the word being used there in Proverbs 31, because it says \u201cbeauty is vain.\u201d\u00a0 So it\u2019s talking about a certain kind of beauty that is empty or shallow or doesn\u2019t last.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t all there is to the picture\u2013there is something better than that kind of beauty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is another word that\u2019s used for beauty that\u2019s what Sharon was just talking about, which is the \u201cglory.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s what is good, what is wholesome, what is lasting, what is enduring.\u00a0 So if you just took that verse in Proverbs 31, you would think there is something wrong with beauty.\u00a0 There is nothing wrong with beauty if it\u2019s the whole picture, if it\u2019s God\u2019s picture.\u00a0 But I think that Proverbs 31 reference is to the world\u2019s view of beauty, which is just the focus on the outward, the visible, what you can see, and the writer there says that\u2019s not enough.\u00a0 That\u2019s shallow, if that\u2019s all you have, you don\u2019t have enough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As I was preparing for these broadcasts, I had the thought\u2013is a woman being beautiful a part of the image of God?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\u00a0 God Himself is beauty, and I think that the more we look like him, the more beautiful we truly become and, also, we were created in the image of beauty Himself, and I think He loves beauty.\u00a0 Look at nature.\u00a0 God is in the business of creating the most spectacular, the most glorious, the most incredible creation and we, of course, getting to be the best of His creation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut beauty is important to us, and I want to be sure that the listeners don\u2019t think that we\u2019re approaching this topic, either, from the idea that beauty should just be put aside; that we shouldn\u2019t have any kind of care about ourselves or respect or admiration for what God has made us to be, because don\u2019t you feel nourished when you walk through a gallery of incredible art; when you walk into a beautiful home or taste a wonderful meal?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are expressions of His creative beauty that He wants us to enjoy, and He wants us to make the most of what He made us to be.\u00a0 I think when we see ourselves in His own eyes we, then, too, become beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s where I think you\u2019ve hit on what is the challenge for so many women, because on one end of the spectrum there can be an obsession over appearance.\u00a0 On the other end of the spectrum, there can be an intentionality about being plain\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes. Vanilla.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026about not wanting to do anything that reflects any beauty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Leigh DeMoss:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was just reading, Bob, about one of the early church fathers who said to his congregation that was arrayed, he said, \u201cIn peacock-like outfits.\u201d\u00a0 These people cared a lot about materialism, and they were all decked out, and he chided his congregation about how ostentatious they were.\u00a0 A little old man stood up and said, \u201cSo what are we to wear?\u201d\u00a0 And he said, \u201cWhatever protects your body from the heat and the cold.\u201d\u00a0 That was to be it.\u00a0 And this man was dressed in this very plain, brown sack-looking robe, and that was his sense of what was appropriate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I think the enemy tends to take us to one of two extremes\u2013that outward appearance is everything or that it is nothing.\u00a0 And as Nancy just said, we have a God who created things that do appeal to the senses and the eyes.\u00a0 I think there\u2019s an appropriate way for us as women to have that kind of beauty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0So should you make it a goal, Sharon, to be an attractive woman?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sharon<\/strong> <strong>Jaynes<\/strong>:\u00a0 The way I look at it, Bob, is I am an ambassador of Christ.\u00a0 I am representing Jesus Christ in this world.\u00a0 And not only that, I think for married women\u2013God created men to be visual creatures, and if I were to say, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not going to care about how I look.\u00a0 It\u2019s okay if I gain 100 pounds.\u00a0 It\u2019s okay if he comes home after work, and I\u2019m still in my sweats with no makeup on and my hair pulled back.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, that\u2019s an affront to my husband and, for me, that says, \u201cI don\u2019t really care about you.\u00a0 I don\u2019t care what you want.\u201d\u00a0 So for me to take care of myself is honoring my husband, as well.\u00a0 I think many women need to think about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we\u2019re making a point here\u2013beauty matters.\u00a0 We can\u2019t push it in the closet, and can\u2019t go to the extreme of ignoring it\u2013beauty does matter.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m going to ask all three of you ladies to be honest about your own beauty, all right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the question:\u00a0 how much of your physical beauty is a part of who you are and your identity as a woman right now?\u00a0 I\u2019m not asking you what part you wish it would be, but right now, as a part of your day, as you get up, and you look in the mirror, and as you start your day on a 1 to 10 point scale, 10 being a lot of my identity is tied up in my physical beauty or number 1 being virtually none of my identity is tied up in it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, who would like to be first?\u00a0 On a 1-to-10-point scale.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll go first.\u00a0 I\u2019ll preface it, as you even prefaced it\u2013I wish it were not this number, but I think I am probably about a 5 on the scale.\u00a0 I\u2019m an actress.\u00a0 In normal life, if I were just living a normal life, I would be normal, I would look normal.\u00a0 I am hefty in Hollywood terms.\u00a0 I have gotten through mental pause, so I am in mental pause and going through, first, infertility treatments and then getting into the whole hormonal changes, I have gained weight, I am 20 pounds heavier than I want to be, and I am having a heck of a time losing it\u2013never had the problem before.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMany women are facing this problem.\u00a0 I am having a difficult time seeing my body change.\u00a0 I\u2019m seeing lines that I didn\u2019t used to have at almost 50 years old.\u00a0 I still think, by and large, I still look good, but what nags at me is my profession.\u00a0 What nags at me is I look at myself based on what that standard is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you\u2019re competing with some \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u00a0 oh, I\u2019m competing, not only against younger women, but women who have been surgically altered to look 30 who are actually 50.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019re going to talk about surgically altered \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026 and, unfortunately, because of my profession, that still frames too much of my self-perception.\u00a0 So that\u2019s \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 that\u2019s fair \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u2026 that\u2019s how I feel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sharon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sharon Jaynes:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019d have to say a 5 also, but I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s a bad thing.\u00a0 I feel pretty comfortable with a 5.\u00a0 You know, when I was growing up\u2013not raised in a Christian home \u2013 raised in a home where my parents fought a lot\u2013a lot of alcohol, a lot of violence.\u00a0 I always grew up thinking, \u201cIf I could be prettier, if I could be smarter,\u201d and I really struggled with all kinds of insecurities, and I wanted to be beautiful, and I did put a lot of weight on that as a young child, and then, as a teenager.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAmazingly, when I became a Christian at 14 through a mother in my neighborhood\u2013a mother of a friend of mine\u2013those feelings didn\u2019t go away.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t instantly say, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m a Christian now,\u201d and this is where I think a lot of Christian women struggle.\u00a0 They think, \u201cNow that I know the Lord, I shouldn\u2019t care so much about how I look.\u00a0 That shouldn\u2019t be such a big deal.\u00a0 It was still a big deal for me.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until I moved into my 30s, and I really started reading about who I was in Christ, where I was in Christ, what I had in Christ\u2013how God really saw me\u2013that I started to change the importance of my appearance.\u00a0 So I\u2019ve gone down from a 9 to a 5, and I\u2019m feeling pretty good about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I think a 5 is a good place to be because God, like we said earlier in the broadcast, we do need to care what we look like.\u00a0 That verse in Proverbs 31 that says beauty is vain, the actual word\u2013it means \u201cfleeting.\u201d\u00a0 So it is fleeting.\u00a0 It\u2019s something we need to realize is that as we grow older, we\u2019re not going to look like we\u2019re 18, we\u2019re not going to look like we\u2019re 30 when we\u2019re 50, and it\u2019s something we need to realize that what the culture says is beautiful, well, that is going to change.\u00a0 We can still be beautiful in a different way.\u00a0 So to answer your question, I\u2019d have to say I\u2019m sitting right there at a 5, and feeling okay about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, another thing that brings to my mind about that question is there was a time in my life when the first thing I did in the morning was to put on my makeup.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t take the trash out without having my makeup on.\u00a0 But now I can go all day and feel fine about it, but at 4:45 I might put on my makeup even if I haven\u2019t had it on all day, because I know that man that I love is getting ready to walk in the door, and I want to look good for him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s great.\u00a0 Nancy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Leigh DeMoss:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I just want to say to Nancy Stafford you don\u2019t have to be in Hollywood to battle those perceptions.\u00a0 You can be in full-time ministry.\u00a0 I also want to say that I\u2019m really thankful that I\u2019m in radio ministry and not TV ministry, because I think my number would be a lot higher if I had to be in front of a camera.\u00a0 I have a little niece who told me she would do my hair for my radio program, and I said that\u2019s the kind of hair I like to have to mess with, is where nobody can see it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll also tell you, Bob, that when your assistant called\u2013or e-mailed me\u2013to see if I would be on this panel, I had just come back from spending a very frustrating evening at the mall trying on clothes.\u00a0 I do this very rarely, and I had put on some weight, and I was very frustrated, I was very disgusted, and I didn\u2019t think I looked good in anything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got home looking very disheveled, having tried on all these clothes that didn\u2019t fit, didn\u2019t look good, and I got an e-mail from your assistant saying, \u201cWe\u2019re having a panel on beauty.\u00a0 Are you free that day?\u201d\u00a0 I said, my e-mail back was, \u201cDo you want me to be on this panel or just to listen?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m still laughing to myself because there is, in my own heart, even being in radio ministry where it doesn\u2019t really matter, in a way, this\u2013I would say\u2013you said you\u2019re at a 5, both you gals.\u00a0 I would say I waiver between about a 3 and a 7.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt any given point on a given day I might find myself being obsessed with what am I going to wear, what am I going to do if we\u2019re doing this videotaping?\u00a0 I have to think about hair and makeup and clothing and things I really don\u2019t want to mess with, but the gods of comparison, sinful comparison, and then what God takes me back to is the kind of beauty that really matters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t disappear, the kind that gets enhanced as you get older, that isn\u2019t vain, it\u2019s not shallow, it isn\u2019t fleeting.\u00a0 That\u2019s the beauty of the spirit, the beauty of the heart, and when I find myself\u2013that number going up high, and I\u2019m too obsessed with this physical stuff, what God does is pull me back and says, \u201cBe obsessed with the kind of beauty that is the beauty of the heart\u2013a radiant spirit, a radiant countenance, a love for Christ, a love for other people,\u201d and that pulls me back to the things that are eternal and really matter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love that, Nancy, and one of the things I keep remembering too, is Paul urging us and so that now is always Christ will be exalted in my body.\u00a0 That means no matter how old we are, no matter what we look like, he is exalted in my body, and that means in our countenance, in our demeanor, and all those things you are talking about that aren't necessarily about the clothes I'm wearing or how much my makeup looks good or if I've gained some weight.\u00a0 He is exalted in our bodies so that we can bear the appearance of Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Leigh DeMoss:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And Peter says that's an unfading kind of beauty.\u00a0 He's talking specifically to women\u2013the unfading beauty of a gentle and a quiet spirit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy Stafford:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to commend all three of you on answering what was really a very unfair question.\u00a0 I mean, really, for a couple of guys to ask you all to rate yourselves around that, but I had to do it because we have listeners, literally, by the hundreds of thousands, millions of women who listen and, again, husbands who are married to them, who I felt, as you all were speaking around the table, were collectively breathing a sigh of relief because they were identifying with each one of you.\u00a0 You all three talked about struggle, you talked about contentment, and you talked about the ultimate inner beauty where we must come back to that is the only place where you find security.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt's not by going on TV and having a physical makeover of your hair and your makeup and other things, but it's a spiritual makeover\u2013it's the desire to learn who we are in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 I think both the husbands and wives and single women and, for that matter, the single men\u2013single men should listen up to these broadcasts, because this is a hot topic.\u00a0 This is important to a woman.\u00a0 Women spend a lot of time in front of the mirror because how they look, their beauty, is a representation of\u00a0 a part of who they are and who God made them to be as a woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll this week we're going to take on some issues.\u00a0 In fact, let me just tell you some of the issues we're going to take on.\u00a0 We're going to take on issues of being overweight, body shape and size, flaws, modesty, makeup, jewelry, body piercing, fashions, and how do we come to some kind of biblical pattern; some kind of place where we can be anchored in this cultural storm that swirls about us and, frankly, that's getting more and more difficult to determine what is truly wholesome in terms of beauty?\u00a0 What does honor God?\u00a0 And then how do we raise the next generation of young ladies?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have four daughters, and I know Barbara tried to do this\u2013we really tried to anchor them in Jesus Christ and who they are in terms of their identity in Him, but they are all four beautiful young ladies who need to dress appropriately and know how to understand their own with a new DVD that\u2019s aimed at girls, called \u201cSweet Pea Beauty.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a re-telling of the Sleeping Beauty story, but it\u2019s all about how to think rightly about appearance and beauty, and they\u2019re targeting young women so that they\u2019ll grow up with a more wholesome, a better more biblical view of beauty, like we\u2019ve been talking about here today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis week, because, as you said earlier Dennis, we\u2019re hoping to meet some new friends, to have some folks join with us and help support the ministry of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> who haven\u2019t done that before.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to make copies of the new \u201cSweet Pea Beauty\u201d DVD from VeggieTales available to those listeners who will
