<\/strong>There are events in life that can leave us paralyzed with fear.\u00a0 In Rosemary Trible\u2019s case, it was a brutal attack that ended in rape.\u00a0 But as she has shared her own story, FamilyLife Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear today from Rosemary Trible about the path God took her on that lead her from fear to forgiveness to freedom.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today,<\/em> thanks for joining us on the Monday edition.\u00a0 We had a guest last week who shared with us that one out of every six women will experience a sexual assault of some kind in her lifetime.\u00a0 That\u2019s a bigger number than I would have imagined.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I agree, Bob, and one of the reasons why I wanted to share this story with our listeners is I know we have a lot of moms and dads who are raising daughters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And for that matter, sons, who are going to grow up into high school and college and beyond and be single and they\u2019re not going to realize how frequent date rape is in this culture today, and really how devastating it can be to a young lady.\u00a0 We have with us the author of <em>Fear to Freedom<\/em><strong>, <\/strong>Rosemary Trible, who joins us again here on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Rosemary, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you so much.\u00a0 Good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Rosemary is married to a former United States Congressman and Senator Paul Trible, since 1971.\u00a0 She has two children.\u00a0 She was also America\u2019s Junior Miss in 1967.\u00a0 Now it was a little different back then, wasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 Wasn\u2019t this tied to some kind of scholarship or\u2026?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Very much so.\u00a0 In fact, I received four years of scholarship, a full ride, and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet women from all across this beautiful country.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And so you got it by being a scholar yourself?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo bathing suits, let\u2019s just put it that way, thank goodness!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I was trying to say that without saying that, so thank for sharing that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe heard earlier, Rosemary, your story of how you were hosting a television program.\u00a0 You had featured the subject of sexual assault on that program.\u00a0 You\u2019d heard from hundreds of viewers who watched your broadcast and you were astounded at the number of women back in 1975 who had experienced sexual assault.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0Then two weeks later as you were doing some taping, late one night at a hotel room, <em>you<\/em> were raped and assaulted by a man who threatened you, telling you if you told anyone, he\u2019d kill you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You told us that this perpetrator was never found.\u00a0 There was never any\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026did the police just\u2026no leads?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, he had seen the show and was really infuriated, and so I\u2019ll never forget\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So it really did motivate him to take action?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 And he said as he first put that cold gun against my head, \u201cOkay, cute talk show host, what do you do with a gun in your head?\u201d\u00a0 My husband was the Commonwealth Attorney.\u00a0 We would have done everything to prosecute this case, but he was such a professional.\u00a0 His face was covered, his hands were covered, and the evidence was only in me.\u00a0 And so, because of that, we were unable to proceed with the case. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe amazing thing is even though I only continued on the talk show for three more months, because of the extent of pain that I was feeling, that was the year that my husband began running for United States Congress at 29 years old.\u00a0 So, it became something that was more silent with just a few friends that knew, and sometimes that\u2019s very difficult to keep that pain inside.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This never made it in the papers\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You told your family and friends, but you weren\u2019t going to go share this over coffee with some new girlfriend or be out on the campaign trail and say, \u201cBy the way, guess what happened to me,\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 Never would I have dreamed that from then until this day, though, my ministry has been to wounded women, many who have been sexually assaulted, others that have dealt with other bulimia and anorexia, panic attacks.\u00a0 So often, you just barely look underneath those and there\u2019s been some kind of rape.\u00a0 Too often, it\u2019s been something within the family; a father, a stepfather.\u00a0 It just breaks your heart.\u00a0 This is so much more common than when we would have ever dreamed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Rosemary, you said you didn\u2019t talk about this publicly.\u00a0 In fact, you just mentioned before we came on air that just this year, January 15<sup>th<\/sup>, you started talking about this publicly?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, isn\u2019t that amazing?\u00a0 I was 25 years-old when this happened and yet I am now 60.\u00a0 One year ago I was at a church service and they spoke on two topics, two questions:\u00a0 What if you didn\u2019t have to be so afraid? And what if you could help someone else not be so afraid?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was like God just pierced my heart with that question and as I went up to the altar, with tears in my eyes, I said, \u201cLord, I\u2019m willing to go public with this story if you will write the book and if my husband is in agreement.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd on the way home that day, my husband said, \u201cOkay, you\u2019re tearing up with the Lord.\u00a0 What\u2019s going on?\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cPaul, this is out there so much.\u00a0 I feel like it\u2019s time for me to share this story.\u201d\u00a0 And he said, \u201cI absolutely agree, and I think you need to start with this summer.\u201d\u00a0 And that was one year ago.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis book was just released February 1<sup>st<\/sup> and our governor\u2019s prayer breakfast in Virginia was the first time I shared it in late January.\u00a0 Then at the national prayer breakfast I spoke to 600 women and on that day Patti Cannady was in that audience, the mother of the beautiful Anne Pressly, who was so viciously killed, murdered, and raped, here in Little Rock, Arkansas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And so, one of the reasons I\u2019m here today in Little Rock is to talk to the media group and to share with so many that are still wounded from that pain and to say, \u201cThis is something that you do not have to stay.\u00a0 You do not have to stay as a victim, but you can find victory.\u00a0 But my faith in God and Christ was what really got me through.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Rosemary, let me ask you about the fear that followed this event for you.\u00a0 Would you say that was a life-dominating phenomenon for you and for how long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, especially during that first campaign, at first there were some questions whether I was pregnant.\u00a0 Then I was very grateful that I found myself pregnant withPaul which I think saved my life.\u00a0 Paul was elected to Congress\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now wait a second!\u00a0 Saved your life?\u00a0 What do you mean by that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There are times where you\u2019ve gone through something this devastating that you don\u2019t know whether life is worth living.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you think about suicide?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There was a moment I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you try it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, but that\u2019s when I passed out.\u00a0 That first day when I had to go back to the station when I ran up those steps I just wanted out and even though I didn\u2019t try to commit suicide, I just totally blanked out.\u00a0 That is the severity of the pain that you\u2019re feeling inside and even those who love the Lord, I\u2019ve have walked through with so many, have come to that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have letters from girls in my drawer that they can\u2019t go further to make that plan without calling me night or day.\u00a0 God wants us to be able to find freedom in Him from this but this is something that is a serious thing, and even the church doesn\u2019t often focus on the fact that we\u2019ve got to acknowledge this pain and be able to help women and men that have been abused.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnly yesterday, a young man, as I spoke at a church, came forward and said, \u201cI\u2019ve never told anyone, but I was raped by my biology teacher in high school.\u201d <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>This is across culture, across female and male, and it\u2019s something that we as families need to say, \u201cEnough is enough!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why this is so important.\u00a0 I\u2019m willing to fight and to be vulnerable and to share this story so that others can find the freedom that I found.\u00a0 I call my walk a journey.\u00a0 A journey from fear to forgiveness to freedom because what I found was that forgiveness was the key to freedom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I want to move to that, but I also know there is another emotion that you had to experience.\u00a0 In fact, you wrote about it in your book:\u00a0 anger.\u00a0 You actually, at one point, took some T-shirts of your husband\u2026?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When you\u2019re that upset and that fearful, all that adrenaline comes pressing through, and it needs to go somewhere.\u00a0 I found that tearing up my husband\u2019s old T-shirts\u2014you find a hole and you pull and you tear\u2014helps divert some of that anger.\u00a0 I\u2019ve also had young girls write the name of their abuser on the back of their feet or their tennis shoes and go for a long run. Every step they take is helping to pound out some of that emotion.\u00a0 We don\u2019t want to use that anger in the wrong way, so we need to help women find outlets.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the book, I have many practical tools to deal with the kind of emotions that come up.\u00a0 You have to face your fear, because if you run away from it, it\u2019ll run after you.\u00a0 But also, find tools that will guard your heart, because you\u2019ve been deeply wounded and you just cannot put a band aid on something like this.\u00a0 It needs a tunicate at first. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Isolation is never the solution to fear is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In fact, you\u2019ve referred to it earlier as like bacteria that grows best in the dark, and that\u2019s what the enemy wants us to do in those situations.\u00a0 He wants a young lady\u2014or for that matter a young man who\u2019s been abused\u2014to hide, not to tell anyone, just kind of put it in a bottle and screw the lid on the top.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, but you had to keep in mind, in the back of your mind, is the memory of a man who put a gun to your head and said, \u201cIf you tell anybody, I know where you live.\u00a0 I\u2019ll come kill you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely.\u00a0 It was really about a year before I came to some real healing. It\u2019s interesting because it came from another fearful situation.\u00a0 And I\u2019ll never understand why, but so many women or men that have been abused will be abused or frightened or in an insecure situation again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, it was right after my husband had been elected to Congress, and the sweet daughter that I was pregnant with didn\u2019t come and didn\u2019t come.\u00a0 So Paul was elected and sworn in, and 10 days after he was elected, finally I went into labor on the floor of Congress listening to President Ford\u2019s address.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget that two members of Congress tapping us on the shoulder and saying, \u201cWe\u2019re taking bets one whether you\u2019ll make it through the night or Paul will become the first Congressman to become a father on the floor of Congress.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019m going, \u201cOh Lord, don\u2019t let my water break on national television!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere I was, nudging Paul, and he was timing my contraction.\u00a0 We made it to Richmond, Virginia two hours away in the snow, and the doctor was amazed that this baby which coming to the world shaking hands and giving political speeches, that\u2019s all she\u2019d done for nine months!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary: <\/strong>But talk about the goodness of God!\u00a0 It was the very doctor that had come that night and really so gently gone through that evidence kit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So that was the second event that God used.\u00a0 Just the fearfulness that surrounded the birth of your daughter?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, it was the joy of the birth of the daughter but it was only six months after her birth that I was strolling in the Old Town Alexandria and I came back and our house had been robbed.\u00a0\u00a0 The door had been crow barred, and suddenly, Dennis, all that fear just came tumbling back, and then fear for my daughter.\u00a0 I remember putting her down for a nap.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want her to sense my fear.\u00a0 I called Paul again and said, \u201cWe\u2019ve been robbed and I\u2019m really fearful!\u201d and he called the police.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a turning point in my faith because as I fell on my knees I cried out to God and said, \u201cGod, I cannot live like a victim anymore!\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to come and hold me close and tender.\u00a0 I surrender this fear, this rape to you.\u201d\u00a0 And it was then like a blanket of love that came over me and I heard these words:\u00a0 \u201cDo not be afraid.\u00a0 I am with you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got up so different from the waiting after the rape because finally I had surrendered my pain to the only One who could really heal me and save me from that terrible memory.\u00a0 That was the beginning of true healing and then the walk toward forgiveness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I want to talk about that for a moment because for a time, you found it very difficult to pray for the man who raped you.\u00a0 In fact, you basically, as I would say it, you wanted justice for him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary<\/strong>:\u00a0 Of course you do!\u00a0 And my husband, who is a commonwealth attorney, wanted him behind bars forever.\u00a0 Something that he had to his wife that he could not even imagine; he had prosecuted many cases, but never dreamed this fear would come this close to home.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yet, interestingly I had to press back into a place of fear to be healed from my fear.\u00a0 It was only another six months after experiencing our home being broken into, when I got a call from a friend, Doug Coe, involved at the national prayer breakfast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cCome into the inner city!\u00a0 I want to tell you about a vision for the city of D.C., set on the hill for God!\u201d\u00a0 I met three African-American pastors and although I went into that city greatly fearful little did I know that the next 11 years God would use those pastors and the work in the inner city for the poor to continue to heal me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat night was another stepping stone to healing.\u00a0 We had dinner in a place in Arlington and I didn\u2019t know anyone there.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know whether you\u2019ve ever experience this, but I looked around the room as I sat at the table, and then I saw this huge African-American man over 6\u20193\u201d, about the size and the muscular build of the man that had raped me.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI\u2019ll sit by anyone but that man,\u201d and that man came and sat right beside me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, you weren\u2019t thinking, \u201cThis is the guy who did this to me, were you?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, but you get triggered by people of size or shape or the smell or the touch\u2026it\u2019s amazing the triggers that come!\u00a0 The man\u2019s face who raped me was covered, this man\u2019s voice was not like his, a voice that I would never forget, but you get triggered, and as he sat down, I said, \u201cI\u2019m Rosemary, tell me a little bit about your life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI\u2019m Pat.\u00a0 I spent five years in Alcatraz.\u00a0 And then another seven years at Lorton Federal Penitentiary.\u201d\u00a0 Now, my hands are sweaty.\u00a0 Now my stomach is flip-flopping!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He has no idea, of course, the context of your life and where you\u2019re coming from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No!\u00a0 No!\u00a0 Then he says, \u201cI\u2019ve been out of prison two weeks.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can imagine how I was feeling!\u00a0 But then he said this:\u00a0 He says, \u201cYou see that pastor over there, John Staggers?\u00a0 He came into the prison and for two years, preached to me about the unconditional love of Jesus Christ, and I finally gave my life to Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 I learned that my crimes\u2014you don\u2019t go to Alcatraz for a loaf of bread\u2014and although we became close friends I never let this man tell me what he had done.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, to realize that whatever he had done, he said, \u201cNo matter how great my crimes I was told that I could be forgiven, and that it would be erased as far as the east is from the west.\u201d\u00a0 It was at that moment a light went on and that 1<sup>st<\/sup> Corinthians:\u00a0 \u201cIf anyone is in Christ, they\u2019re a new creature; the old has passed away, and all things have become new.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked at Pat and I realized he was a brother.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have to be afraid of him.\u00a0 He was a new creature, and then he went on to tell me that he was going to be working in the inner city schools because he had been there and they couldn\u2019t finesse him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI left the table and went to the powder room.\u00a0 It was then I fell on my knees and I said, \u201cI forgive the man who raped me, and I will pray every day the rest of my life that he meets Jesus and that he will be forgiven and that I will spend eternity with a man who raped me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, this release of this burden came off of me, and I felt a peace like never before.\u00a0 I walked back in that room and you never are around a group of African-American pastors without singing \u201cJesus Loves Me, This I Know.\u201d\u00a0 And I took Pat\u2019s hand, but the fear was gone.\u00a0 I knew that Jesus had in a new way taken me on a journey of healing, and taught me a lesson about the power of forgiveness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI began to work in the inner city with Pat and these individual pastors, and we gleaned the fields and we worked on latchkey kids, having an after-school program and a playground.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you one funny story:\u00a0 Pat became one of my best friends.\u00a0 I did Pat\u2019s eulogy when he died.\u00a0 But one day, at Shiloh Baptist Church, when we had had our time, I couldn\u2019t get in the parking lot, so I parked two blocks away, and of all things I locked my keys in the car.\u00a0 I was a little nervous.\u00a0 You still get triggered.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, at that wonderful prayer time, Pat was there, and I said, \u201cWould you walk me to my car?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cOf course.\u201d\u00a0 So he\u2019s walking me to my car, and we\u2019re talking, and I said, \u201cThere are my keys.\u201d\u00a0 And he whistles to a man across the street who comes over and says, \u201cMy friend Rosemary locked her keys in the car.\u00a0 Could you help her?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd do you know, in one <em>second<\/em> he was in my car and my keys were in my hand!\u00a0 And I said, \u201cThank you very much!\u00a0 Can I pay you something for doing this?\u201d\u00a0 And he said, \u201cOh no, no!\u00a0 A friend of Pat\u2019s is a friend of mine.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is a guy who jacks into cars whenever he wants to, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I didn\u2019t realize that then!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut as he walked across the street, Pat put his arm around me and said, \u201cHoney, don\u2019t worry about it.\u00a0 He does this for a living!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh my goodness! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was kind of exciting in the inner city.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s interesting that God took your life, though\u2014you could have just withdrawn!\u00a0 You could have shriveled up.\u00a0 But you did just the opposite.\u00a0 Earlier, Bob had talked about a defining moment\u2026this ultimately defined your life.\u00a0 Even for me to say it, it\u2019s still for good?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>God\u2019s somehow, in His ingenuity, as only He could do it has used what man intended for evil for good purposes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re so right!\u00a0 I clung to that Isaiah 61:\u00a0 \u201cHe came for the broken-hearted\u201d and truly in my life, he gave me that crown of beauty for ashes, and that oil of gladness for despair, that everlasting joy would be ours. or\u2026?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Very much so.\u00a0 In fact, I received four years of scholarship, a full ride, and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet women from all across this beautiful country.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And so you got it by being a scholar yourself?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo bathing suits, let\u2019s just put it that way, thank goodness!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I was trying to say that without saying that, so thank for sharing that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe heard earlier, Rosemary, your story of how you were hosting a television program.\u00a0 You had featured the subject of sexual assault on that program.\u00a0 You\u2019d heard from hundreds of viewers who watched your broadcast and you were astounded at the number of women back in 1975 who had experienced sexual assault.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0Then two weeks later as you were doing some taping, late one night at a hotel room, <em>you<\/em> were raped and assaulted by a man who threatened you, telling you if you told anyone, he\u2019d kill you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You told us that this perpetrator was never found.\u00a0 There was never any\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026did the police just\u2026no leads?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, he had seen the show and was really infuriated, and so I\u2019ll never forget\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So it really did motivate him to take action?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 And he said as he first put that cold gun against my head, \u201cOkay, cute talk show host, what do you do with a gun in your head?\u201d\u00a0 My husband was the Commonwealth Attorney.\u00a0 We would have done everything to prosecute this case, but he was such a professional.\u00a0 His face was covered, his hands were covered, and the evidence was only in me.\u00a0 And so, because of that, we were unable to proceed with the case. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe amazing thing is even though I only continued on the talk show for three more months, because of the extent of pain that I was feeling, that was the year that my husband began running for United States Congress at 29 years old.\u00a0 So, it became something that was more silent with just a few friends that knew, and sometimes that\u2019s very difficult to keep that pain inside.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This never made it in the papers\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You told your family and friends, but you weren\u2019t going to go share this over coffee with some new girlfriend or be out on the campaign trail and say, \u201cBy the way, guess what happened to me,\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 Never would I have dreamed that from then until this day, though, my ministry has been to wounded women, many who have been sexually assaulted, others that have dealt with other bulimia and anorexia, panic attacks.\u00a0 So often, you just barely look underneath those and there\u2019s been some kind of rape.\u00a0 Too often, it\u2019s been something within the family; a father, a stepfather.\u00a0 It just breaks your heart.\u00a0 This is so much more common than when we would have ever dreamed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Rosemary, you said you didn\u2019t talk about this publicly.\u00a0 In fact, you just mentioned before we came on air that just this year, January 15<sup>th<\/sup>, you started talking about this publicly?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, isn\u2019t that amazing?\u00a0 I was 25 years-old when this happened and yet I am now 60.\u00a0 One year ago I was at a church service and they spoke on two topics, two questions:\u00a0 What if you didn\u2019t have to be so afraid? And what if you could help someone else not be so afraid?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was like God just pierced my heart with that question and as I went up to the altar, with tears in my eyes, I said, \u201cLord, I\u2019m willing to go public with this story if you will write the book and if my husband is in agreement.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd on the way home that day, my husband said, \u201cOkay, you\u2019re tearing up with the Lord.\u00a0 What\u2019s going on?\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cPaul, this is out there so much.\u00a0 I feel like it\u2019s time for me to share this story.\u201d\u00a0 And he said, \u201cI absolutely agree, and I think you need to start with this summer.\u201d\u00a0 And that was one year ago.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis book was just released February 1<sup>st<\/sup> and our governor\u2019s prayer breakfast in Virginia was the first time I shared it in late January.\u00a0 Then at the national prayer breakfast I spoke to 600 women and on that day Patti Cannady was in that audience, the mother of the beautiful Anne Pressly, who was so viciously killed, murdered, and raped, here in Little Rock, Arkansas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And so, one of the reasons I\u2019m here today in Little Rock is to talk to the media group and to share with so many that are still wounded from that pain and to say, \u201cThis is something that you do not have to stay.\u00a0 You do not have to stay as a victim, but you can find victory.\u00a0 But my faith in God and Christ was what really got me through.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Rosemary, let me ask you about the fear that followed this event for you.\u00a0 Would you say that was a life-dominating phenomenon for you and for how long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, especially during that first campaign, at first there were some questions whether I was pregnant.\u00a0 Then I was very grateful that I found myself pregnant withPaul which I think saved my life.\u00a0 Paul was elected to Congress\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now wait a second!\u00a0 Saved your life?\u00a0 What do you mean by that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There are times where you\u2019ve gone through something this devastating that you don\u2019t know whether life is worth living.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you think about suicide?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There was a moment I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you try it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, but that\u2019s when I passed out.\u00a0 That first day when I had to go back to the station when I ran up those steps I just wanted out and even though I didn\u2019t try to commit suicide, I just totally blanked out.\u00a0 That is the severity of the pain that you\u2019re feeling inside and even those who love the Lord, I\u2019ve have walked through with so many, have come to that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have letters from girls in my drawer that they can\u2019t go further to make that plan without calling me night or day.\u00a0 God wants us to be able to find freedom in Him from this but this is something that is a serious thing, and even the church doesn\u2019t often focus on the fact that we\u2019ve got to acknowledge this pain and be able to help women and men that have been abused.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnly yesterday, a young man, as I spoke at a church, came forward and said, \u201cI\u2019ve never told anyone, but I was raped by my biology teacher in high school.\u201d <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>This is across culture, across female and male, and it\u2019s something that we as families need to say, \u201cEnough is enough!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why this is so important.\u00a0 I\u2019m willing to fight and to be vulnerable and to share this story so that others can find the freedom that I found.\u00a0 I call my walk a journey.\u00a0 A journey from fear to forgiveness to freedom because what I found was that forgiveness was the key to freedom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I want to move to that, but I also know there is another emotion that you had to experience.\u00a0 In fact, you wrote about it in your book:\u00a0 anger.\u00a0 You actually, at one point, took some T-shirts of your husband\u2026?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When you\u2019re that upset and that fearful, all that adrenaline comes pressing through, and it needs to go somewhere.\u00a0 I found that tearing up my husband\u2019s old T-shirts\u2014you find a hole and you pull and you tear\u2014helps divert some of that anger.\u00a0 I\u2019ve also had young girls write the name of their abuser on the back of their feet or their tennis shoes and go for a long run. Every step they take is helping to pound out some of that emotion.\u00a0 We don\u2019t want to use that anger in the wrong way, so we need to help women find outlets.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the book, I have many practical tools to deal with the kind of emotions that come up.\u00a0 You have to face your fear, because if you run away from it, it\u2019ll run after you.\u00a0 But also, find tools that will guard your heart, because you\u2019ve been deeply wounded and you just cannot put a band aid on something like this.\u00a0 It needs a tunicate at first. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Isolation is never the solution to fear is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In fact, you\u2019ve referred to it earlier as like bacteria that grows best in the dark, and that\u2019s what the enemy wants us to do in those situations.\u00a0 He wants a young lady\u2014or for that matter a young man who\u2019s been abused\u2014to hide, not to tell anyone, just kind of put it in a bottle and screw the lid on the top.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, but you had to keep in mind, in the back of your mind, is the memory of a man who put a gun to your head and said, \u201cIf you tell anybody, I know where you live.\u00a0 I\u2019ll come kill you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely.\u00a0 It was really about a year before I came to some real healing. It\u2019s interesting because it came from another fearful situation.\u00a0 And I\u2019ll never understand why, but so many women or men that have been abused will be abused or frightened or in an insecure situation again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, it was right after my husband had been elected to Congress, and the sweet daughter that I was pregnant with didn\u2019t come and didn\u2019t come.\u00a0 So Paul was elected and sworn in, and 10 days after he was elected, finally I went into labor on the floor of Congress listening to President Ford\u2019s address.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget that two members of Congress tapping us on the shoulder and saying, \u201cWe\u2019re taking bets one whether you\u2019ll make it through the night or Paul will become the first Congressman to become a father on the floor of Congress.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019m going, \u201cOh Lord, don\u2019t let my water break on national television!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere I was, nudging Paul, and he was timing my contraction.\u00a0 We made it to Richmond, Virginia two hours away in the snow, and the doctor was amazed that this baby which coming to the world shaking hands and giving political speeches, that\u2019s all she\u2019d done for nine months!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary: <\/strong>But talk about the goodness of God!\u00a0 It was the very doctor that had come that night and really so gently gone through that evidence kit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So that was the second event that God used.\u00a0 Just the fearfulness that surrounded the birth of your daughter?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, it was the joy of the birth of the daughter but it was only six months after her birth that I was strolling in the Old Town Alexandria and I came back and our house had been robbed.\u00a0\u00a0 The door had been crow barred, and suddenly, Dennis, all that fear just came tumbling back, and then fear for my daughter.\u00a0 I remember putting her down for a nap.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want her to sense my fear.\u00a0 I called Paul again and said, \u201cWe\u2019ve been robbed and I\u2019m really fearful!\u201d and he called the police.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a turning point in my faith because as I fell on my knees I cried out to God and said, \u201cGod, I cannot live like a victim anymore!\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to come and hold me close and tender.\u00a0 I surrender this fear, this rape to you.\u201d\u00a0 And it was then like a blanket of love that came over me and I heard these words:\u00a0 \u201cDo not be afraid.\u00a0 I am with you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got up so different from the waiting after the rape because finally I had surrendered my pain to the only One who could really heal me and save me from that terrible memory.\u00a0 That was the beginning of true healing and then the walk toward forgiveness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I want to talk about that for a moment because for a time, you found it very difficult to pray for the man who raped you.\u00a0 In fact, you basically, as I would say it, you wanted justice for him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary<\/strong>:\u00a0 Of course you do!\u00a0 And my husband, who is a commonwealth attorney, wanted him behind bars forever.\u00a0 Something that he had to his wife that he could not even imagine; he had prosecuted many cases, but never dreamed this fear would come this close to home.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yet, interestingly I had to press back into a place of fear to be healed from my fear.\u00a0 It was only another six months after experiencing our home being broken into, when I got a call from a friend, Doug Coe, involved at the national prayer breakfast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cCome into the inner city!\u00a0 I want to tell you about a vision for the city of D.C., set on the hill for God!\u201d\u00a0 I met three African-American pastors and although I went into that city greatly fearful little did I know that the next 11 years God would use those pastors and the work in the inner city for the poor to continue to heal me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat night was another stepping stone to healing.\u00a0 We had dinner in a place in Arlington and I didn\u2019t know anyone there.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know whether you\u2019ve ever experience this, but I looked around the room as I sat at the table, and then I saw this huge African-American man over 6\u20193\u201d, about the size and the muscular build of the man that had raped me.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI\u2019ll sit by anyone but that man,\u201d and that man came and sat right beside me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, you weren\u2019t thinking, \u201cThis is the guy who did this to me, were you?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, but you get triggered by people of size or shape or the smell or the touch\u2026it\u2019s amazing the triggers that come!\u00a0 The man\u2019s face who raped me was covered, this man\u2019s voice was not like his, a voice that I would never forget, but you get triggered, and as he sat down, I said, \u201cI\u2019m Rosemary, tell me a little bit about your life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI\u2019m Pat.\u00a0 I spent five years in Alcatraz.\u00a0 And then another seven years at Lorton Federal Penitentiary.\u201d\u00a0 Now, my hands are sweaty.\u00a0 Now my stomach is flip-flopping!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He has no idea, of course, the context of your life and where you\u2019re coming from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No!\u00a0 No!\u00a0 Then he says, \u201cI\u2019ve been out of prison two weeks.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can imagine how I was feeling!\u00a0 But then he said this:\u00a0 He says, \u201cYou see that pastor over there, John Staggers?\u00a0 He came into the prison and for two years, preached to me about the unconditional love of Jesus Christ, and I finally gave my life to Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 I learned that my crimes\u2014you don\u2019t go to Alcatraz for a loaf of bread\u2014and although we became close friends I never let this man tell me what he had done.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, to realize that whatever he had done, he said, \u201cNo matter how great my crimes I was told that I could be forgiven, and that it would be erased as far as the east is from the west.\u201d\u00a0 It was at that moment a light went on and that 1<sup>st<\/sup> Corinthians:\u00a0 \u201cIf anyone is in Christ, they\u2019re a new creature; the old has passed away, and all things have become new.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked at Pat and I realized he was a brother.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have to be afraid of him.\u00a0 He was a new creature, and then he went on to tell me that he was going to be working in the inner city schools because he had been there and they couldn\u2019t finesse him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI left the table and went to the powder room.\u00a0 It was then I fell on my knees and I said, \u201cI forgive the man who raped me, and I will pray every day the rest of my life that he meets Jesus and that he will be forgiven and that I will spend eternity with a man who raped me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, this release of this burden came off of me, and I felt a peace like never before.\u00a0 I walked back in that room and you never are around a group of African-American pastors without singing \u201cJesus Loves Me, This I Know.\u201d\u00a0 And I took Pat\u2019s hand, but the fear was gone.\u00a0 I knew that Jesus had in a new way taken me on a journey of healing, and taught me a lesson about the power of forgiveness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI began to work in the inner city with Pat and these individual pastors, and we gleaned the fields and we worked on latchkey kids, having an after-school program and a playground.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you one funny story:\u00a0 Pat became one of my best friends.\u00a0 I did Pat\u2019s eulogy when he died.\u00a0 But one day, at Shiloh Baptist Church, when we had had our time, I couldn\u2019t get in the parking lot, so I parked two blocks away, and of all things I locked my keys in the car.\u00a0 I was a little nervous.\u00a0 You still get triggered.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, at that wonderful prayer time, Pat was there, and I said, \u201cWould you walk me to my car?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cOf course.\u201d\u00a0 So he\u2019s walking me to my car, and we\u2019re talking, and I said, \u201cThere are my keys.\u201d\u00a0 And he whistles to a man across the street who comes over and says, \u201cMy friend Rosemary locked her keys in the car.\u00a0 Could you help her?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd do you know, in one <em>second<\/em> he was in my car and my keys were in my hand!\u00a0 And I said, \u201cThank you very much!\u00a0 Can I pay you something for doing this?\u201d\u00a0 And he said, \u201cOh no, no!\u00a0 A friend of Pat\u2019s is a friend of mine.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is a guy who jacks into cars whenever he wants to, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I didn\u2019t realize that then!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut as he walked across the street, Pat put his arm around me and said, \u201cHoney, don\u2019t worry about it.\u00a0 He does this for a living!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh my goodness! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was kind of exciting in the inner city.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s interesting that God took your life, though\u2014you could have just withdrawn!\u00a0 You could have shriveled up.\u00a0 But you did just the opposite.\u00a0 Earlier, Bob had talked about a defining moment\u2026this ultimately defined your life.\u00a0 Even for me to say it, it\u2019s still for good?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>God\u2019s somehow, in His ingenuity, as only He could do it has used what man intended for evil for good purposes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rosemary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re so right!\u00a0 I clung to that Isaiah 61:\u00a0 \u201cHe came for the broken-hearted\u201d and truly in my life, he gave me that crown of beauty for ashes, and that oil of gladness for despair, that everlasting joy would be ours.
