<\/strong>Corwin Anthony was playing football in the National Football League when he proposed to his six-time all-American national gymnastics\u2019 champion girlfriend Kim Hamilton.\u00a0 When the two became man and wife their success in athletics didn\u2019t ensure success as husband and wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, I assumed, because I was a good guy and I loved Jesus that I would be a great husband, but I didn\u2019t take the time to begin to learn the basic principles of how to be a husband and how to be married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And as a wife, I had watched my mother in a volatile relationship with my father just close up, and so that\u2019s what I did.\u00a0 I just did the exact same thing when we would go at it for whatever reason.\u00a0 Instead of me trying to communicate my feelings I would just withdraw and not say anything at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>for Thursday, July 1<sup>st<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Corwin and Kim Anthony join us today to share candidly about some of the struggles they experienced in the early years of their marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, thanks for joining us.\u00a0 You know, couples who stand together at the altar gazing adoringly into one another\u2019s eyes, in the back of their mind is this thought, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to have any challenges or problems in our marriage because we love God, we love each other.\u00a0 It\u2019s not like our friends or our parents.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right, \u201cWe\u2019ll be different.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cWe\u2019ll just drift into marriage nirvana.\u201d\u00a0 And then they wake up, sometimes the next day, sometimes the next week, next month, but ultimately, they wake up and go, \u201cThis is a little harder than I realized it was going to be.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, let\u2019s ask our guests on today\u2019s broadcast, Corwin and Kim Anthony.\u00a0 Was that the way you guys\u2026?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, we\u2019ve never had any problems at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, that wasn\u2019t the question.\u00a0 When you stood at the altar, before the pastor, did you think you would be different?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I mean, Kim, you came from a tough family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What were you thinking?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was thinking, \u201cI hope that it will be different.\u201d\u00a0 I desperately wanted it to be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Corwin and Kim give leadership to Athletes in Action Pro Ministry.\u00a0 They\u2019re involved in the NFL, and Kim has written a book called <em>Unfavorable Odds<\/em>.\u00a0 We talked earlier about their relationship and kind of how it developed, and how Corwin popped the question and Kim said, \u201cyes,\u201d and you started out your marriage.\u00a0 How did you marriage start?\u00a0 Was it perfect from the very beginning like you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I literally told Kim, \u201cI\u2019m going to make you the happiest woman in the world.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The sad thing is I believed it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I really did.\u00a0 I was so confident of my love for her and I loved God.\u00a0 I had never seen a really good marriage.\u00a0 My parents were divorced growing up.\u00a0 I had this kind of, it was really kind of arrogant to be honest with you, feeling pretty good about, \u201cMan, I\u2019ve made some changes that most people my age never change from, so girl, you\u2019re about to be impressed with this man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was watching her as you were saying that, and her shoulders would kind of squishing up a little bit and she was smiling\u2026he really did say that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He did!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And you believed him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I believed him.\u00a0 I mean, this is a man of integrity!\u00a0 This is a man who is after my own heart \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand when he told me that, I thought, \u201cWell, how could I say no?\u00a0 I have to say yes to this man!\u00a0 He\u2019s going to make me the happiest woman in the world!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, at this point, were you in the League?\u00a0 Were you playing ball?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, not yet, but it was pretty clear that I was going to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You were headed in that direction, and you\u2019re out of college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Are your gymnastics days over at this point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>My gymnastics days were over, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And what were you imagining that life was going to be as Mrs. Corwin Anthony?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, because, again I didn\u2019t see that marriage modeled, I don\u2019t think I had the right perspective of marriage.\u00a0 I was, at the time, a stuntwoman in Hollywood.\u00a0 I thought that he would play football and I would be a stuntwoman and we would have this great life together but it didn\u2019t quite work out like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I ended up signing with the LA Rams, and I know I just dated myself\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That was 1991?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>1991, right after UCLA and the market for stunt people is in LA, so I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThis is a God thing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u201c<\/strong>This is perfect.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes.\u00a0 So, now I ended up getting cut about a month into the season, and the Jets picked me up, and\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s all the way across the country, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I\u2019d never been out of California before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin: <\/strong>\u00a0It was awhole different world so that was really the first time we began to start seeing some tension in our relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And you\u2019re going to be living in New York which means what for the stuntwoman?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It means I\u2019d be out of work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 It was hard\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So what did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I performed with a group called Antigravity.\u00a0 They are a gymnastics dance group, and I did the Radio City Music Hall Easter Show.\u00a0 I did some professional dancing while I was there, and ironically, as I was performing at Radio City I was approached by the manager of the Rockettes and he invited me to join the Rockettes to be a part of their group.\u00a0 They were willing to teach me how to tap dance and everything and I was excited about that.\u00a0 So I\u2019m thinking, \u201cokay, I can\u2019t be a stuntwoman in LA, but I can be a Rockette in New York!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I wasn\u2019t too happy about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well they just kick their legs up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But why were you not happy about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, you know, I had this image of a Rockette, you know, the legs, and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t think I want my wife, you know\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, you don\u2019t want\u2026yes, \u201cThose are my legs!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Nobody else gets to enjoy them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, yes, as a girl, you don\u2019t think about that stuff sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But the transition from the Rams to New York was smooth for us because for Kim New York is a great market for\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim: \u2026<\/strong>Dancing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026her dancing and \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026Acting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026and she\u2019s an artsy person.\u00a0 And so, I thought, \u201cokay, New York is great!\u201d\u00a0 Now, I re-sign with the Jets after that season and the Jets traded me to Green Bay.\u00a0 I found out on Monday morning at eight o\u2019clock after I had a good game.\u00a0 It was the Hall of Fame game and I walked into the office and they said, \u201cCorwin, we have just traded you to Green Bay.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow my first thought was not \u201cOh man!\u00a0 That\u2019s messed up my career!\u201d\u00a0 It was, \u201cOh no!\u00a0 My wife is going to be devastated!\u201d\u00a0 So I called home right after I found out and before I could get a word out, she said, \u201cHave you been traded to Green Bay?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I said, \u201cHow did you know?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cBecause Green Bay just called and said your plane leaves at 12 and don\u2019t be late.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes, baby, come get me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I\u2019m in the parking lot praying and asking God to help me console this woman who\u2019s going to be weeping and sobbing.\u00a0 She pulled up in the car and I\u2019ll never forget it.\u00a0 She opened the door and walked towards me with a big smile on her face and when she got close up to me she put her arms around my neck and said, \u201cWow, what is God doing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, at that point, I fell apart.\u00a0 She totally didn\u2019t stress about it.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t cry or complain.\u00a0 She trusted that God had a plan even in this move to Green Bay knowing that it meant she would have to end her career yet again and move across the country with me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Given the fact that neither of you had a really great marriage model to look at growing up, you\u2019re dad had been in and out of the house and in and out of his marriage with your mom\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u2026<\/strong>a couple of times.\u00a0 Your parents had divorced.\u00a0 You promised you\u2019re going to make her the happiest woman on the face of the earth.\u00a0 When did it dawn on the two of you that marriage is a little harder than you thought?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll say our first year in marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t take too long.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Once we got married that\u2019s when I was traded to Green Bay and then my career ended there.\u00a0 So it was a quick in and out of the NFL.\u00a0 Football is kind of like a bubble.\u00a0 You\u2019re in a protective\u2026it\u2019s Disneyworld.\u00a0 It\u2019s not the real world.\u00a0 Once we entered the real world and had to deal with real issues that is when we began to see the flaws in our lives.\u00a0 All the stuff in the past began to come up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBoy, our fights would always end with me screaming and slamming the doors and driving away and parking somewhere in the parking lot by myself for two hours.\u00a0 We really didn\u2019t know how to resolve conflict.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know anything about being married.\u00a0 I had assumed because I was a good guy and I loved Jesus that I would be a great husband but I didn\u2019t take the time to begin to learn the basic principles of how to be a husband and how to be married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And as a wife I had watched my mother in a volatile relationship with my father just close up and so that\u2019s what I did.\u00a0 I just did the exact same thing when we would go at it for whatever reason.\u00a0 Instead of me trying to communicate my feelings I would just withdraw and not say anything at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You undoubtedly had some old tapes that played in your heart about how a man treats a woman.\u00a0 When you saw him storm out of the house, peel out of the driveway, I mean, fear?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, fear.\u00a0 That is the exact same thing my father used to do.\u00a0 I would sit there and listen to my parents argue and I wouldn\u2019t hear silence until the door slammed, and I thought, \u201cokay, he\u2019s gone.\u00a0 Now it\u2019s safe.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it was crazy that the same thing was actually playing out in our marriage.\u00a0 It was very difficult for us to deal with it, and it wasn\u2019t until we attended a FamilyLife Conference that we were able to understand better how to communicate.\u00a0 It was just so eye-opening to be able to learn the principles that we should\u2019ve learned probably before we got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you attend the conference in that first year in Green Bay?\u00a0 Is that where you went?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, not in Green Bay, they don\u2019t have much in Green Bay!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well we\u2019ve got a great conference on Green Bay!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We\u2019re up in Appleton!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes, thanks a lot!\u00a0 About 20 years too late!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, we were there back then!\u00a0 We have some great stories of what God did to redeem some lives.\u00a0 There\u2019s a couple there, Jim and Debi Godsey, who came to the conference and the way they describe it, they said if you had had their picture up on a tripod next to the podium as the poster kids for how not to do marriage that would have been them.\u00a0 What was the first year you guys went to the conference?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Boy, our first year was probably in\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Was it in Peoria?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think it was in Peoria, Illinois.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We had several different aspects of it.\u00a0 Remember when we went to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl and we had a little mini conference with the chaplains up in Detroit.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, Dave and Ann Wilson.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Dave and Ann Wilson led that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They had their little mini FamilyLife deal.\u00a0 But we ended up going to three Weekend to Remember\u00ae conferences.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, before you got to the Weekend to Remember\u00ae, you got the tension you don\u2019t know how to handle conflict, you\u2019re not communicating well.\u00a0 Did either of you think \u201cI don\u2019t know if this will make it?\u201d\u00a0 Did you think \u201cmaybe it would be better if we never had gotten married?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m a recovering control freak let me put it that way.\u00a0 I would not have labeled the way I treated Kim as controlling back then, but if you can picture a flower in the palm of your hand I was very protective in the way I thought I should protect Kim by covering her with my hand.\u00a0 I covered her but I also kept the light from coming to her and did not allow her to blossom because of my overprotection and my overbearing ways.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe actually went through and was diagnosed with depression, and one day, she came to me and said, \u201cCorwin, the only reason that I\u2019m still with you is because of my love for God.\u201d\u00a0 She had lost all feelings for me, all romance, all emotions, and it was at that time that I began to really look at and consider the way I treated her.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know it was hurting her that deeply.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, you attended three of these Weekend to Remember\u00ae marriage conferences and you attended saying you didn\u2019t know how to do marriage.\u00a0 What was your number one take away that you\u2019ve had, Kim, and I\u2019d like you to also answer it Corwin, but what did you learn there that made the difference?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The biggest thing for me was communication because I was not a communicator.\u00a0 I held in for so many years the sadness and the hurt that I felt in our marriage and until it just boiled over and it got to the point where I said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 The only reason I\u2019m here is because of my love and commitment to God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, at the conference, that was a big deal for me, to learn how to communicate, how to express my feelings, even when I don\u2019t feel like it as opposed to shutting down.\u00a0 I believe that\u2019s helped us, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, yes, very much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u201c<\/strong>That\u2019s helped, hasn\u2019t it, honey?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I was a guy who would chase her, you know, \u201cLet\u2019s talk!\u00a0 Talk now!\u00a0 Come on, what are you doing?\u201d\u00a0 And she wouldn\u2019t want to talk.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I just needed more time to process some things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How about for you?\u00a0 Any big thoughts that were breakthroughs for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Handling conflict.\u00a0 Not being afraid of conflict and seeing that conflict, sometimes, can be good.\u00a0 Well, it <em>is<\/em> good for a relationship when you handle it the right way and the results are enormous.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Instead of controlling\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Instead of controlling\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026and taking your hand from being over the rosebud\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You remove your hand and nourish it and cherish it, and allow the light to allow the rosebud to open up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes!\u00a0 When Kim was in the middle of her depression I remember praying, \u201cGod, how do I help her?\u201d\u00a0 At that time I was trying to move away from this controlling guy.\u00a0 But I was praying, \u201cGod, what do I do to help my wife?\u00a0 She\u2019s sad all the time.\u201d\u00a0 And no one knew, but I knew, and I remember it was as if God spoke to my heart.\u00a0 He said, \u201cCorwin, you need to treat her like the little girl she never got to be.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe don\u2019t have girls so I didn\u2019t know.\u00a0 How does a father treat a girl?\u00a0 So I started guessing, \u201cWell, he probably buys her ice cream and tells her her hair is pretty all the time, and so I started doing those things for Kim as an adult.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we\u2019re in ministry together during this time, and I remember hearing the radio broadcast, and the guy said, \u201cYou know, every morning, when I see my wife, I just tell her, I say, \u2018Boy, my day can begin now.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 So, I started doing that, and the first time I said that, Kim looked at me with those eyes and said, \u201cWhat book have you been reading?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know what?\u00a0 I just kept pouring it on, remember, \u201cTreat her like the little girl she never got to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I did that and I began ministering to her that way.\u00a0 I remember, after a season of really pouring it on her, she came out of the bedroom one morning, and I looked up, and I said, \u201cBoy, my day can begin now!\u201d\u00a0 All of a sudden a huge smile came across her face and she ran down the stairs and jumped into my lap just like a little girl.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s when God reminded me what He told me months ago, \u201cTreat her like the little girl she never got to be.\u201d\u00a0 So that\u2019s where we are now.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been through a lot.\u00a0 It\u2019s been painful for both of us.\u00a0 Her depression led her to do some things that really hurt me as well, but God has got us in a really good place right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I wish you could see Kim\u2019s face right now.\u00a0 She\u2019s transfixed on the man who\u2019s helped her be the happiest woman on the planet.\u00a0 What did you learn, Kim about being a wife to Corwin?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The biggest thing I\u2019ve learned about being a wife to Corwin is that I should be his biggest cheerleader.\u00a0 I should be the one who is encouraging him and believing in him.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t always done that but it\u2019s something I\u2019ve been working on and definitely something that I enjoy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother thing is that I need to trust that God has put us together for a reason and that in those tough times when you feel like giving up, you feel like, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t know if this is going to work.\u201d I have to remember that God doesn\u2019t make mistakes.\u00a0 When I look back and I look at the book and our relationship and how God brought us back together, I see His hand, and it\u2019s so very clear.\u00a0 I love you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And I love you, too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You really are articulating something that we attempt to teach from the scripture, of how when God brings two people together, it\u2019s like Adam and Eve.\u00a0 The real Provider of the gift is God.\u00a0 He\u2019s the one you need to look to whose judgment can be trusted.\u00a0 He knew what He was doing when He brought two very different, very selfish, very broken people together.\u00a0 Barbara and I talk about that a lot.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been married now, coming up on, 38 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0The most often repeated phrase in the last five years of our marriage is, \u201cMan!\u00a0 We are really different!\u00a0 We are <em>really <\/em>different!\u201d\u00a0 But you know what?\u00a0 If you look past how those differences rub you the wrong way to the God who gave you the gift, then all of a sudden it\u2019s a dynamic to your life you would never have had.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCorwin, I didn\u2019t read the same book you did about \u201cBoy, my day can begin now,\u201d but one of the things I\u2019ve been saying increasingly to Barbara for the past few years, \u201cWherever you go, you make things beautiful.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oooh!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I like that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And I think the message for the guys is your assignment, if you\u2019re married, is to make your wife like Christ:\u00a0 complete, holy, blameless.\u00a0 That\u2019s your assignment.\u00a0 I want to thank you guys for being on our broadcast and sharing your <\/strong>Corwin Anthony was playing football in the National Football League when he proposed to his six-time all-American national gymnastics\u2019 champion girlfriend Kim Hamilton.\u00a0 When the two became man and wife their success in athletics didn\u2019t ensure success as husband and wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, I assumed, because I was a good guy and I loved Jesus that I would be a great husband, but I didn\u2019t take the time to begin to learn the basic principles of how to be a husband and how to be married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And as a wife, I had watched my mother in a volatile relationship with my father just close up, and so that\u2019s what I did.\u00a0 I just did the exact same thing when we would go at it for whatever reason.\u00a0 Instead of me trying to communicate my feelings I would just withdraw and not say anything at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>for Thursday, July 1<sup>st<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Corwin and Kim Anthony join us today to share candidly about some of the struggles they experienced in the early years of their marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, thanks for joining us.\u00a0 You know, couples who stand together at the altar gazing adoringly into one another\u2019s eyes, in the back of their mind is this thought, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to have any challenges or problems in our marriage because we love God, we love each other.\u00a0 It\u2019s not like our friends or our parents.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right, \u201cWe\u2019ll be different.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cWe\u2019ll just drift into marriage nirvana.\u201d\u00a0 And then they wake up, sometimes the next day, sometimes the next week, next month, but ultimately, they wake up and go, \u201cThis is a little harder than I realized it was going to be.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, let\u2019s ask our guests on today\u2019s broadcast, Corwin and Kim Anthony.\u00a0 Was that the way you guys\u2026?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, we\u2019ve never had any problems at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, that wasn\u2019t the question.\u00a0 When you stood at the altar, before the pastor, did you think you would be different?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I mean, Kim, you came from a tough family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What were you thinking?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was thinking, \u201cI hope that it will be different.\u201d\u00a0 I desperately wanted it to be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Corwin and Kim give leadership to Athletes in Action Pro Ministry.\u00a0 They\u2019re involved in the NFL, and Kim has written a book called <em>Unfavorable Odds<\/em>.\u00a0 We talked earlier about their relationship and kind of how it developed, and how Corwin popped the question and Kim said, \u201cyes,\u201d and you started out your marriage.\u00a0 How did you marriage start?\u00a0 Was it perfect from the very beginning like you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I literally told Kim, \u201cI\u2019m going to make you the happiest woman in the world.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The sad thing is I believed it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I really did.\u00a0 I was so confident of my love for her and I loved God.\u00a0 I had never seen a really good marriage.\u00a0 My parents were divorced growing up.\u00a0 I had this kind of, it was really kind of arrogant to be honest with you, feeling pretty good about, \u201cMan, I\u2019ve made some changes that most people my age never change from, so girl, you\u2019re about to be impressed with this man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was watching her as you were saying that, and her shoulders would kind of squishing up a little bit and she was smiling\u2026he really did say that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He did!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And you believed him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I believed him.\u00a0 I mean, this is a man of integrity!\u00a0 This is a man who is after my own heart \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand when he told me that, I thought, \u201cWell, how could I say no?\u00a0 I have to say yes to this man!\u00a0 He\u2019s going to make me the happiest woman in the world!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, at this point, were you in the League?\u00a0 Were you playing ball?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, not yet, but it was pretty clear that I was going to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You were headed in that direction, and you\u2019re out of college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Are your gymnastics days over at this point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>My gymnastics days were over, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And what were you imagining that life was going to be as Mrs. Corwin Anthony?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, because, again I didn\u2019t see that marriage modeled, I don\u2019t think I had the right perspective of marriage.\u00a0 I was, at the time, a stuntwoman in Hollywood.\u00a0 I thought that he would play football and I would be a stuntwoman and we would have this great life together but it didn\u2019t quite work out like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I ended up signing with the LA Rams, and I know I just dated myself\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That was 1991?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>1991, right after UCLA and the market for stunt people is in LA, so I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThis is a God thing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u201c<\/strong>This is perfect.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes.\u00a0 So, now I ended up getting cut about a month into the season, and the Jets picked me up, and\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s all the way across the country, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I\u2019d never been out of California before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin: <\/strong>\u00a0It was awhole different world so that was really the first time we began to start seeing some tension in our relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And you\u2019re going to be living in New York which means what for the stuntwoman?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It means I\u2019d be out of work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 It was hard\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So what did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I performed with a group called Antigravity.\u00a0 They are a gymnastics dance group, and I did the Radio City Music Hall Easter Show.\u00a0 I did some professional dancing while I was there, and ironically, as I was performing at Radio City I was approached by the manager of the Rockettes and he invited me to join the Rockettes to be a part of their group.\u00a0 They were willing to teach me how to tap dance and everything and I was excited about that.\u00a0 So I\u2019m thinking, \u201cokay, I can\u2019t be a stuntwoman in LA, but I can be a Rockette in New York!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I wasn\u2019t too happy about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well they just kick their legs up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But why were you not happy about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, you know, I had this image of a Rockette, you know, the legs, and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t think I want my wife, you know\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, you don\u2019t want\u2026yes, \u201cThose are my legs!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Nobody else gets to enjoy them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, yes, as a girl, you don\u2019t think about that stuff sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But the transition from the Rams to New York was smooth for us because for Kim New York is a great market for\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim: \u2026<\/strong>Dancing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026her dancing and \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026Acting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026and she\u2019s an artsy person.\u00a0 And so, I thought, \u201cokay, New York is great!\u201d\u00a0 Now, I re-sign with the Jets after that season and the Jets traded me to Green Bay.\u00a0 I found out on Monday morning at eight o\u2019clock after I had a good game.\u00a0 It was the Hall of Fame game and I walked into the office and they said, \u201cCorwin, we have just traded you to Green Bay.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow my first thought was not \u201cOh man!\u00a0 That\u2019s messed up my career!\u201d\u00a0 It was, \u201cOh no!\u00a0 My wife is going to be devastated!\u201d\u00a0 So I called home right after I found out and before I could get a word out, she said, \u201cHave you been traded to Green Bay?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I said, \u201cHow did you know?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cBecause Green Bay just called and said your plane leaves at 12 and don\u2019t be late.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes, baby, come get me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I\u2019m in the parking lot praying and asking God to help me console this woman who\u2019s going to be weeping and sobbing.\u00a0 She pulled up in the car and I\u2019ll never forget it.\u00a0 She opened the door and walked towards me with a big smile on her face and when she got close up to me she put her arms around my neck and said, \u201cWow, what is God doing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, at that point, I fell apart.\u00a0 She totally didn\u2019t stress about it.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t cry or complain.\u00a0 She trusted that God had a plan even in this move to Green Bay knowing that it meant she would have to end her career yet again and move across the country with me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Given the fact that neither of you had a really great marriage model to look at growing up, you\u2019re dad had been in and out of the house and in and out of his marriage with your mom\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u2026<\/strong>a couple of times.\u00a0 Your parents had divorced.\u00a0 You promised you\u2019re going to make her the happiest woman on the face of the earth.\u00a0 When did it dawn on the two of you that marriage is a little harder than you thought?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll say our first year in marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t take too long.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Once we got married that\u2019s when I was traded to Green Bay and then my career ended there.\u00a0 So it was a quick in and out of the NFL.\u00a0 Football is kind of like a bubble.\u00a0 You\u2019re in a protective\u2026it\u2019s Disneyworld.\u00a0 It\u2019s not the real world.\u00a0 Once we entered the real world and had to deal with real issues that is when we began to see the flaws in our lives.\u00a0 All the stuff in the past began to come up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBoy, our fights would always end with me screaming and slamming the doors and driving away and parking somewhere in the parking lot by myself for two hours.\u00a0 We really didn\u2019t know how to resolve conflict.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know anything about being married.\u00a0 I had assumed because I was a good guy and I loved Jesus that I would be a great husband but I didn\u2019t take the time to begin to learn the basic principles of how to be a husband and how to be married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And as a wife I had watched my mother in a volatile relationship with my father just close up and so that\u2019s what I did.\u00a0 I just did the exact same thing when we would go at it for whatever reason.\u00a0 Instead of me trying to communicate my feelings I would just withdraw and not say anything at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You undoubtedly had some old tapes that played in your heart about how a man treats a woman.\u00a0 When you saw him storm out of the house, peel out of the driveway, I mean, fear?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, fear.\u00a0 That is the exact same thing my father used to do.\u00a0 I would sit there and listen to my parents argue and I wouldn\u2019t hear silence until the door slammed, and I thought, \u201cokay, he\u2019s gone.\u00a0 Now it\u2019s safe.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it was crazy that the same thing was actually playing out in our marriage.\u00a0 It was very difficult for us to deal with it, and it wasn\u2019t until we attended a FamilyLife Conference that we were able to understand better how to communicate.\u00a0 It was just so eye-opening to be able to learn the principles that we should\u2019ve learned probably before we got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you attend the conference in that first year in Green Bay?\u00a0 Is that where you went?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, not in Green Bay, they don\u2019t have much in Green Bay!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well we\u2019ve got a great conference on Green Bay!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We\u2019re up in Appleton!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes, thanks a lot!\u00a0 About 20 years too late!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, we were there back then!\u00a0 We have some great stories of what God did to redeem some lives.\u00a0 There\u2019s a couple there, Jim and Debi Godsey, who came to the conference and the way they describe it, they said if you had had their picture up on a tripod next to the podium as the poster kids for how not to do marriage that would have been them.\u00a0 What was the first year you guys went to the conference?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Boy, our first year was probably in\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Was it in Peoria?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think it was in Peoria, Illinois.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We had several different aspects of it.\u00a0 Remember when we went to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl and we had a little mini conference with the chaplains up in Detroit.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, Dave and Ann Wilson.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Dave and Ann Wilson led that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They had their little mini FamilyLife deal.\u00a0 But we ended up going to three Weekend to Remember\u00ae conferences.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, before you got to the Weekend to Remember\u00ae, you got the tension you don\u2019t know how to handle conflict, you\u2019re not communicating well.\u00a0 Did either of you think \u201cI don\u2019t know if this will make it?\u201d\u00a0 Did you think \u201cmaybe it would be better if we never had gotten married?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m a recovering control freak let me put it that way.\u00a0 I would not have labeled the way I treated Kim as controlling back then, but if you can picture a flower in the palm of your hand I was very protective in the way I thought I should protect Kim by covering her with my hand.\u00a0 I covered her but I also kept the light from coming to her and did not allow her to blossom because of my overprotection and my overbearing ways.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe actually went through and was diagnosed with depression, and one day, she came to me and said, \u201cCorwin, the only reason that I\u2019m still with you is because of my love for God.\u201d\u00a0 She had lost all feelings for me, all romance, all emotions, and it was at that time that I began to really look at and consider the way I treated her.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know it was hurting her that deeply.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, you attended three of these Weekend to Remember\u00ae marriage conferences and you attended saying you didn\u2019t know how to do marriage.\u00a0 What was your number one take away that you\u2019ve had, Kim, and I\u2019d like you to also answer it Corwin, but what did you learn there that made the difference?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The biggest thing for me was communication because I was not a communicator.\u00a0 I held in for so many years the sadness and the hurt that I felt in our marriage and until it just boiled over and it got to the point where I said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 The only reason I\u2019m here is because of my love and commitment to God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, at the conference, that was a big deal for me, to learn how to communicate, how to express my feelings, even when I don\u2019t feel like it as opposed to shutting down.\u00a0 I believe that\u2019s helped us, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, yes, very much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u201c<\/strong>That\u2019s helped, hasn\u2019t it, honey?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I was a guy who would chase her, you know, \u201cLet\u2019s talk!\u00a0 Talk now!\u00a0 Come on, what are you doing?\u201d\u00a0 And she wouldn\u2019t want to talk.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I just needed more time to process some things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How about for you?\u00a0 Any big thoughts that were breakthroughs for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Handling conflict.\u00a0 Not being afraid of conflict and seeing that conflict, sometimes, can be good.\u00a0 Well, it <em>is<\/em> good for a relationship when you handle it the right way and the results are enormous.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Instead of controlling\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Instead of controlling\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026and taking your hand from being over the rosebud\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You remove your hand and nourish it and cherish it, and allow the light to allow the rosebud to open up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes!\u00a0 When Kim was in the middle of her depression I remember praying, \u201cGod, how do I help her?\u201d\u00a0 At that time I was trying to move away from this controlling guy.\u00a0 But I was praying, \u201cGod, what do I do to help my wife?\u00a0 She\u2019s sad all the time.\u201d\u00a0 And no one knew, but I knew, and I remember it was as if God spoke to my heart.\u00a0 He said, \u201cCorwin, you need to treat her like the little girl she never got to be.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe don\u2019t have girls so I didn\u2019t know.\u00a0 How does a father treat a girl?\u00a0 So I started guessing, \u201cWell, he probably buys her ice cream and tells her her hair is pretty all the time, and so I started doing those things for Kim as an adult.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we\u2019re in ministry together during this time, and I remember hearing the radio broadcast, and the guy said, \u201cYou know, every morning, when I see my wife, I just tell her, I say, \u2018Boy, my day can begin now.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 So, I started doing that, and the first time I said that, Kim looked at me with those eyes and said, \u201cWhat book have you been reading?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know what?\u00a0 I just kept pouring it on, remember, \u201cTreat her like the little girl she never got to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I did that and I began ministering to her that way.\u00a0 I remember, after a season of really pouring it on her, she came out of the bedroom one morning, and I looked up, and I said, \u201cBoy, my day can begin now!\u201d\u00a0 All of a sudden a huge smile came across her face and she ran down the stairs and jumped into my lap just like a little girl.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s when God reminded me what He told me months ago, \u201cTreat her like the little girl she never got to be.\u201d\u00a0 So that\u2019s where we are now.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been through a lot.\u00a0 It\u2019s been painful for both of us.\u00a0 Her depression led her to do some things that really hurt me as well, but God has got us in a really good place right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I wish you could see Kim\u2019s face right now.\u00a0 She\u2019s transfixed on the man who\u2019s helped her be the happiest woman on the planet.\u00a0 What did you learn, Kim about being a wife to Corwin?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The biggest thing I\u2019ve learned about being a wife to Corwin is that I should be his biggest cheerleader.\u00a0 I should be the one who is encouraging him and believing in him.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t always done that but it\u2019s something I\u2019ve been working on and definitely something that I enjoy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother thing is that I need to trust that God has put us together for a reason and that in those tough times when you feel like giving up, you feel like, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t know if this is going to work.\u201d I have to remember that God doesn\u2019t make mistakes.\u00a0 When I look back and I look at the book and our relationship and how God brought us back together, I see His hand, and it\u2019s so very clear.\u00a0 I love you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And I love you, too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You really are articulating something that we attempt to teach from the scripture, of how when God brings two people together, it\u2019s like Adam and Eve.\u00a0 The real Provider of the gift is God.\u00a0 He\u2019s the one you need to look to whose judgment can be trusted.\u00a0 He knew what He was doing when He brought two very different, very selfish, very broken people together.\u00a0 Barbara and I talk about that a lot.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been married now, coming up on, 38 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Corwin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0The most often repeated phrase in the last five years of our marriage is, \u201cMan!\u00a0 We are really different!\u00a0 We are <em>really <\/em>different!\u201d\u00a0 But you know what?\u00a0 If you look past how those differences rub you the wrong way to the God who gave you the gift, then all of a sudden it\u2019s a dynamic to your life you would never have had.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCorwin, I didn\u2019t read the same book you did about \u201cBoy, my day can begin now,\u201d but one of the things I\u2019ve been saying increasingly to Barbara for the past few years, \u201cWherever you go, you make things beautiful.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oooh!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kim:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I like that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And I think the message for the guys is your assignment, if you\u2019re married, is to make your wife like Christ:\u00a0 complete, holy, blameless.\u00a0 That\u2019s your assignment.\u00a0 I want to thank you guys for being on our broadcast and sharing your
