Lepine.\u00a0 Randy Alcorn joins us today to help us understand that the goodness of God and the reality of evil and suffering are not contradictory.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I know what we\u2019re going to talk about is sober stuff today.\u00a0 And I don\u2019t want to get us off on the wrong foot, but I\u2019ve been trying to come up with\u2026well, there are two words that keep rolling around in my mind.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, Randy Alcorn wrote the book on <em>Heaven<\/em>.\u00a0 You\u2019ve seen that, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 And he joins us here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Randy, welcome back to the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks, great to be with you guys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The book on <em>Heaven<\/em> is a pretty thick book, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is a pretty thick book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you\u2019ve written this book called, <em>If God is Good.<\/em>\u00a0 It\u2019s thicker, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, it\u2019s fewer words, but they printed it on paper\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bigger print\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026where it\u2019s actually a little bigger than the <em>Heaven<\/em> book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, that\u2019s going to be one of my key questions for you, Randy.\u00a0 Do you count the words or the weight?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I generally\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Pound for pound, I think you\u2019re the best and most prolific author.\u00a0 There\u2019s a portion of my house we\u2019ve had to dig down deep, and pour some footing because that end of the house is sinking\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026under the weight of Alcorn books?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Under the weight of Alcorn books.\u00a0 <em>Safely Home<\/em>, one of my favorite books about China, and a guy who graduated from Harvard who became a believer\u2026I\u2019ll not get off on that because that\u2019s not what we\u2019re talking about today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 See, this gets me back\u2014these two books\u2026I\u2019m trying to go\u2026\u201dcomprehensive\u201d?\u00a0 That\u2019s a good word, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or, \u201cobsessive\u201d?\u00a0 I can\u2019t decide which\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no, no, no\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cComprehensive\u201d is the word?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, for those who don\u2019t know Randy Alcorn, he is the founder and director of Eternal Perspective Ministries.\u00a0 He is the author of more than 30 books.\u00a0 He and his wife, Nancy, have two married daughters, four grandsons\u2026and he\u2019s also a donor to the ministry here at FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And, so right here on the broadcast, I want to just say thanks for being a kindred spirit, radio listener, Randy.\u00a0 I also wanted to say thanks for your faithfulness to the Scripture.\u00a0 And, you know, in a day when there\u2019s a lot of fluff being created (we\u2019re kidding Randy about the size of his books), there\u2019s nothing fluffy about any of your writing.\u00a0 I just appreciate your faithfulness to the Scripture, to God, and to what He\u2019s doing here, and the Gospel.\u00a0 And, also, I\u2019m glad you\u2019re on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019m curious...why this subject for you to tackle in this new book, <em>If God is Good<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter you\u2019d written <em>Heaven<\/em>, and it was so well received, and tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of copies of that book in print.\u00a0 You\u2019re sitting down, going, \u201cOkay, what\u2019s next?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why this subject?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think there\u2019s a logical relationship, in that we talk about the hope of Heaven in the big<em> Heaven<\/em> book, and there\u2019s about five or six smaller books, devotional books, <em>Heaven for Kids<\/em>, and all kinds of smaller forms that it\u2019s in to get it out to more people.\u00a0 But what we discovered with the <em>Heaven<\/em> book is that over 600,000 copies of the big book were sold; that\u2019s because a lot of people really like to see what Scripture has to say about this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, okay, that\u2019s about Heaven, but where are we living right now?\u00a0 We\u2019re living right now, between Eden and the New Earth\u2014in this parenthesis of time that is the exception, not the rule.\u00a0 It\u2019s a temporary state of rebellion.\u00a0 It\u2019s the curse, the fall.\u00a0 And, we live in a world of evil and suffering; and, one day, we will no longer.\u00a0 So how do we live now, in light of the evil and suffering, and all the questions it raises?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No doubt about it.\u00a0 And, as I was looking at your book, too, Randy, I thought of the title.\u00a0 The title is, <strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong><em>If<\/em><\/strong>God is Good.\u201d\u00a0 Are you really titling this, \u201c<strong><em>Since <\/em><\/strong>God is Good\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I deliberately didn\u2019t say, \u201cSince God is Good\u201d because the way the question is worded for many people, and certainly for unbelievers, but also for believers.\u00a0 This is not just <em>a<\/em>question.\u00a0 This is <em><u>the<\/u><\/em>question that people ask.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a Barna poll where people were asked the question, \u201cIf you could ask one thing of God, what would you ask?\u201d\u00a0 And, the question from believers and unbelievers alike, was the same, which is, \u201cWhy all the evil and suffering?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo the unbeliever asked the question, and comes to the conclusion, \u201cWell, if there was an all-good God, who was all-powerful, obviously he wouldn\u2019t permit all this evil and suffering.\u00a0 Therefore, I don\u2019t believe in God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor the believer it\u2019s, \u201cLord, I believe You.\u00a0 I want to trust You; but, I don\u2019t understand\u2014why given Your goodness, and given Your power\u2014why did you let our daughter die of leukemia?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, you and I talked before we came in here, into the studio.\u00a0 And you talked about how, early on, when you were a high school student, you were drinking deeply from C.S. Lewis, Schaeffer\u2014from the great authors of history, from the classic works of the Christian faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWas there ever a time in your life, Randy, as you began to experience life, where you questioned God\u2019s goodness?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I certainly questioned what I would call His wisdom.\u00a0 Which is presumptuous in the extreme, and it reminds me of Job questioning God.\u00a0 And, then the last five chapters of the book of Job\u2014God just saying, \u201cOkay, here\u2019s what I\u2019m like,\u201d and \u201cWhere were you when I created the earth?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Surely you know, for you have lived for so many years, where God\u2019s being sarcastic with Job, and all.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, I certainly, as a brand new Christian\u2014I\u2019d only known Christ for a year\u2014when one of my closest friends had a terrible accident.\u00a0 He was literally impaled on a metal fence post, as he was swinging over\u2014a tree limb broke.\u00a0 And, he was dying, and I was certain it was God\u2019s will to heal Greg.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was positive I had as much faith as you could have, because I couldn\u2019t imagine\u2014this guy was sold out to Jesus, and Greg and I were growing in our walk with God.\u00a0 And, I was shocked when Greg died, even though they said he was going to die.\u00a0 I was just amazed.\u00a0 I was saying, \u201cLord, why?\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know how there are questions you ask, not where your faith is in jeopardy; but, instead, your faith is being refined and almost redefined.\u00a0 Because you realize, you know what, I am losing a certain faith, but the faith I\u2019m losing was a false faith.\u00a0 It\u2019s a faith that I\u2019d be better off without because it wasn\u2019t true to God\u2019s word.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause had I really come to grips with what God\u2019s Word said, I would have realized there was no promise of God to heal my friend, Greg; except, ultimately, in the resurrection\u2014where there will be healing for all of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The reason I asked that question is\u2026I think a lot of people can take a step back from a book like this, that is so comprehensive, and they can go, \u201cYes, Randy Alcorn has always been in the fold.\u00a0 He\u2019s always believed.\u00a0 Kind of grew up in a \u201cChristian womb\u201d of sorts, and was surrounded by people who believed and, has never struggled in his own faith.\u00a0 But, you have faced those moments.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I grew up in a non-Christian home.\u00a0 I had no faith in God, at all.\u00a0 Never went to church.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t read Bible storybooks\u2014anything like that.\u00a0 I was exposed to the Gospel when I was a teenager.\u00a0 I was skeptical, at first, but I thought, \u201cThese are pretty nice people,\u201d you know.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was one Bible in our home that I had gotten when I was in third grade.\u00a0 My mom took me to a local Methodist church one Sunday; and, it was the Sunday they gave out Bibles to third graders.\u00a0 And we had that, it was on the shelf, it had been unread all those years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m at home and because they\u2019re talking about things from the Bible at this church\u2019s youth group I\u2019m going to; I start reading it through.\u00a0 At first I\u2019m reading it like it\u2019s\u2026it\u2019s science fiction, or something.\u00a0 I mean it\u2019s just a story, or Greek mythology.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where did you start?\u00a0 Did you just\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 In Genesis, you know, there it was, right at the beginning.\u00a0 So I started, and I did, you know, flip around different places, didn\u2019t understand numbers of things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then I got to the Gospels, and I looked at Jesus.\u00a0 And, something resonated inside of me.\u00a0 It was a work of the Holy Spirit, drawing me to Himself.\u00a0 When I read the Gospels, they had the ring of truth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw in Jesus, someone who was not just part of a story.\u00a0 I realized there was something in me that testified to this being real.\u00a0 He was a real person.\u00a0 He said these real things.\u00a0 He dies on the cross.\u00a0 He rises from the dead, and I\u2019m realizing\u2014I\u2019m believing this, now.\u00a0 And I came to faith through reading the Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I came from a non-Christian and skeptical background.\u00a0 And there was a lot of resistance when I came to faith in Christ.\u00a0 My father, in particular, was not happy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a time here, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, over a number of months, and it was because of some things that were taking place in my life\u2014some challenges to my faith, that I quoted Tozer.\u00a0 I quoted the same statement.\u00a0 Bob knows what it is, even before I say it.\u00a0 But, it\u2019s something that you came to grips with, early in your Christian faith, and you\u2019ve continued to noodle on this, and chew on this, until ultimately, you\u2019ve penned a book about this.\u00a0 And what Tozer said, he said, \u201cThe most important thing about you\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Can you finish the rest of it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Uh, what you think of God?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s what you think about God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are your thoughts about who God is?\u00a0 His character?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What He\u2019s like?\u00a0 Is He a sovereign King?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Does He rule in the affairs of men and women, and nations?\u00a0 Does He care about the little stuff?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 And, Tozer\u2019s book, <em>The Knowledge of the Holy<\/em>, where he begins by talking about the most important thing about us is what we, at any given moment, think about God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, compared to that, our creeds about Him are really unimportant.\u00a0 Because we can say, \u201cWe believe this\u2026,\u201d we can check off the box in the doctrinal statement; but when it comes down to it, who do you believe God is?\u00a0 And who you do believe God is, is tested as we face evil and suffering in life.\u00a0 It\u2019s not really tested when things are going our way.\u00a0 It\u2019s when things aren\u2019t going our way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Got to get to the question, because our listeners are wondering, \u201cIf God is good, then why evil?\u201d\u00a0 Why doesn\u2019t He just pull out a giant, God-sized eraser, and just go, \u201cNo, let\u2019s eliminate that from the equation.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, that\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 And when you turn to Ephesians 1, you see God\u2019s promises about the things that He has purposed.\u00a0 He talks about the things that will be put into effect when the times have realized their fulfillment to bring all things in Heaven on Earth, together, under One Head, even Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat God had a plan where He took into account, what would be the very best thing He could do to bring glory to Himself, and to bring good to His children.\u00a0 And when He took that into account, He gave this gift of choice.\u00a0 Fully knowing that people would make the wrong choice; that Adam would sin, that we then would have this inherited sin; we would all sin in Adam.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat death and destruction, and suffering and evil would come into the world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, that He knew that as part of His redemptive plan (not as an afterthought)\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe (the second member of the Triune God\u2014Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), the Son would become a man.\u00a0 Become a child, to grow up to be a man.\u00a0 Live this perfect life.\u00a0 Atone for our sins on the cross.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, through His resurrection, would purchase something which has not yet been fully realized, but will be.\u00a0 And that is ultimate redemption\u2014a new Heaven, a new Earth.\u00a0 So that, the people of God, in eternity future, will be able to look back, and say, \u201cYes!\u00a0 All that evil and suffering, truly was worth it.\u00a0 Because God brought so much of a greater good out of it, than there would have been if it just would have been restricted to the goodness of an innocent Adam and Eve, in Eden.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow that\u2019s difficult for us to understand because we think, \u201cWell, I\u2019d rather just have gone with the innocent Adam and Eve.\u00a0 And then God just keep people from sinning.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight.\u00a0 Okay\u2026so, try that with your wife.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you could keep your\u2026make it so that your wife always loves you, and always thinks you\u2019re the wisest, the funniest person\u2014in other words, if you could have a Stepford wife.\u00a0 Snap your fingers and you could make it so that she always responded to you in this positive way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, wouldn\u2019t you do that?\u00a0 And of course, somebody might be tempted to do that for an hour\u2026or a day\u2026and then they would start going, this isn\u2019t real.\u00a0 Because she has no choice, except to love me.\u00a0 She\u2019s not really loving me and she\u2019s not really a human being.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause intrinsic to being a human being, is the ability to make a meaningful choice.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd meaningful choice does not exist unless we could make a wrong choice.\u00a0 And a wrong choice is not really a wrong choice if it does not have bad consequences.\u00a0 Just like a right choice isn\u2019t a right choice without consequences.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, so there\u2019s a big picture.\u00a0 A big story taking place here that is all about what God\u2019s trying to display, here in the universe.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, I know I\u2019m speaking for a listener right now, who isn\u2019t married to a Stepford husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer husband is anything but that.\u00a0 He\u2019s maybe unfaithful; he\u2019s been off into pornography; maybe has a problem with drugs or alcohol.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she\u2019s going, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t want a robot, but this life that I\u2019m looking at here, this is pretty grim.\u00a0 This is pretty tough.\u00a0 And, I\u2019m having a hard time.\u00a0 I\u2019m losing heart in believing the truth about God, because life is just kicking the daylights out of me.\u201d\u00a0 What would you say to her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, first of all, this is something I think we really have to emphasize\u2026and I do in \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>If God is Good<\/em>, and the smaller spinoffs from it.\u00a0 But, this woman is absolutely right to have a broken heart.\u00a0 And we would be absolutely wrong to minimize her pain by giving little theological, philosophical explanations in such a way that it would minimize that.\u00a0 What I love about God\u2019s Word is that it tells us the things it tells us, without minimizing our pain.\u00a0 In fact, it emphasizes our pain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExodus 3, God says, \u201cI have seen the misery of my people.\u00a0 I have heard them crying out.\u00a0 I am concerned about their suffering.\u201d\u00a0 And, so what does he do?\u00a0 He comes down.\u00a0 You say, \u201cWell, okay, but why hasn\u2019t He come down for this woman, yet?\u201d\u00a0 Well, He is going to, but when we call upon God, as Habakkuk did, saying, \u201cLord, how long are you going to tolerate this wrong?\u00a0 Why don\u2019t you end it right now?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we have to remember is, if God ended right now, all that was wrong, if he just kept her husband from doing what he\u2019s doing.\u00a0 Or, brought judgment upon him for doing it, right now, where would all of us be?\u00a0 Our lives would all end, right now.\u00a0 God does tolerate wrong for a time\u2014as a virtue that relates to His patience and His longsuffering; giving time for His plan to unfold.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is where faith comes in, because God never minimizes this woman\u2019s suffering, but what He does say is, \u201cLook at the scars on the hands and feet of my Son, and ask yourself whether these look like the hands of a God who doesn\u2019t care?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, He does care.\u00a0 And if nothing else gets through, in this whole question of wrestling with evil and suffering\u2014to me, as I say in the book, Jesus is the One Answer, who is bigger than all the questions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And on behalf of that woman, I want to say thanks for not minimizing her pain; \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbecause we have any number of listeners who are tuning in on this broadcast, who they\u2019re facing difficult issues.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s not a wayward husband; maybe it\u2019s a health issue with a child, a spouse, or yourself, or a loved one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLife doesn\u2019t always make sense.\u00a0 But, the thing I\u2019ve found is\u2014and I\u2019ve faced a couple of these key points in my life, Randy.\u00a0 One was when Barbara nearly died in 1976\u2014when we started FamiliyLife.\u00a0 Her heart rate raced to 300 beats a minute, and I just wondered, \u201cWhat are You up to, God?\u201d\u00a0 And one year, my dad died, my son had surgery, I was rushed to the hospital, and Barbara nearly died.\u00a0 All of what had been stable in my life, had been shaken.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, ultimately where I ended up on that afternoon, back in 1976\u2014actually, it was a summer in 1977 when I opened my Bible.\u00a0 I looked at it, and I go, \u201cYou know what\u2026either what this promises and says about God is true\u2014100 percent true\u2014or, it\u2019s not true at all. And I can\u2019t trust it, and I can\u2019t trust God.\u00a0 And, you know what?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know where else to turn, other than to the Scriptures and to God and place my faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s the other thing I wanted to thank you for, on behalf of the woman\u2026that you called her to faith.\u00a0 Because ultimately, that is our responsibility.\u00a0 To believe the truth about God, about life, about circumstances, and to lean into God on a day-to-day basis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you\u2019re not trying to suggest that\u2014 if someone will just get a copy of your book, and read it, and understand more about what the Bible has to say about God\u2019s goodness and His power, and the reality of evil\u2014 that all of a sudden they won\u2019t suffer as much.\u00a0 Because the suffering may continue but to understand that God is at work in it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, to respond by faith, as you were talking about and saying, \u201cGod, I trust You, and I believe that You know what you\u2019re doing, even when I can\u2019t see it.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the response we are called to.\u00a0 And the promise of Scripture is that God\u2019s goodness and His power will be vindicated; book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, that\u2019s going to be one of my key questions for you, Randy.\u00a0 Do you count the words or the weight?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I generally\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Pound for pound, I think you\u2019re the best and most prolific author.\u00a0 There\u2019s a portion of my house we\u2019ve had to dig down deep, and pour some footing because that end of the house is sinking\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026under the weight of Alcorn books?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Under the weight of Alcorn books.\u00a0 <em>Safely Home<\/em>, one of my favorite books about China, and a guy who graduated from Harvard who became a believer\u2026I\u2019ll not get off on that because that\u2019s not what we\u2019re talking about today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 See, this gets me back\u2014these two books\u2026I\u2019m trying to go\u2026\u201dcomprehensive\u201d?\u00a0 That\u2019s a good word, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or, \u201cobsessive\u201d?\u00a0 I can\u2019t decide which\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no, no, no\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cComprehensive\u201d is the word?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, for those who don\u2019t know Randy Alcorn, he is the founder and director of Eternal Perspective Ministries.\u00a0 He is the author of more than 30 books.\u00a0 He and his wife, Nancy, have two married daughters, four grandsons\u2026and he\u2019s also a donor to the ministry here at FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And, so right here on the broadcast, I want to just say thanks for being a kindred spirit, radio listener, Randy.\u00a0 I also wanted to say thanks for your faithfulness to the Scripture.\u00a0 And, you know, in a day when there\u2019s a lot of fluff being created (we\u2019re kidding Randy about the size of his books), there\u2019s nothing fluffy about any of your writing.\u00a0 I just appreciate your faithfulness to the Scripture, to God, and to what He\u2019s doing here, and the Gospel.\u00a0 And, also, I\u2019m glad you\u2019re on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019m curious...why this subject for you to tackle in this new book, <em>If God is Good<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter you\u2019d written <em>Heaven<\/em>, and it was so well received, and tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of copies of that book in print.\u00a0 You\u2019re sitting down, going, \u201cOkay, what\u2019s next?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why this subject?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think there\u2019s a logical relationship, in that we talk about the hope of Heaven in the big<em> Heaven<\/em> book, and there\u2019s about five or six smaller books, devotional books, <em>Heaven for Kids<\/em>, and all kinds of smaller forms that it\u2019s in to get it out to more people.\u00a0 But what we discovered with the <em>Heaven<\/em> book is that over 600,000 copies of the big book were sold; that\u2019s because a lot of people really like to see what Scripture has to say about this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, okay, that\u2019s about Heaven, but where are we living right now?\u00a0 We\u2019re living right now, between Eden and the New Earth\u2014in this parenthesis of time that is the exception, not the rule.\u00a0 It\u2019s a temporary state of rebellion.\u00a0 It\u2019s the curse, the fall.\u00a0 And, we live in a world of evil and suffering; and, one day, we will no longer.\u00a0 So how do we live now, in light of the evil and suffering, and all the questions it raises?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No doubt about it.\u00a0 And, as I was looking at your book, too, Randy, I thought of the title.\u00a0 The title is, <strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong><em>If<\/em><\/strong>God is Good.\u201d\u00a0 Are you really titling this, \u201c<strong><em>Since <\/em><\/strong>God is Good\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I deliberately didn\u2019t say, \u201cSince God is Good\u201d because the way the question is worded for many people, and certainly for unbelievers, but also for believers.\u00a0 This is not just <em>a<\/em>question.\u00a0 This is <em><u>the<\/u><\/em>question that people ask.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a Barna poll where people were asked the question, \u201cIf you could ask one thing of God, what would you ask?\u201d\u00a0 And, the question from believers and unbelievers alike, was the same, which is, \u201cWhy all the evil and suffering?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo the unbeliever asked the question, and comes to the conclusion, \u201cWell, if there was an all-good God, who was all-powerful, obviously he wouldn\u2019t permit all this evil and suffering.\u00a0 Therefore, I don\u2019t believe in God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor the believer it\u2019s, \u201cLord, I believe You.\u00a0 I want to trust You; but, I don\u2019t understand\u2014why given Your goodness, and given Your power\u2014why did you let our daughter die of leukemia?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, you and I talked before we came in here, into the studio.\u00a0 And you talked about how, early on, when you were a high school student, you were drinking deeply from C.S. Lewis, Schaeffer\u2014from the great authors of history, from the classic works of the Christian faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWas there ever a time in your life, Randy, as you began to experience life, where you questioned God\u2019s goodness?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I certainly questioned what I would call His wisdom.\u00a0 Which is presumptuous in the extreme, and it reminds me of Job questioning God.\u00a0 And, then the last five chapters of the book of Job\u2014God just saying, \u201cOkay, here\u2019s what I\u2019m like,\u201d and \u201cWhere were you when I created the earth?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Surely you know, for you have lived for so many years, where God\u2019s being sarcastic with Job, and all.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, I certainly, as a brand new Christian\u2014I\u2019d only known Christ for a year\u2014when one of my closest friends had a terrible accident.\u00a0 He was literally impaled on a metal fence post, as he was swinging over\u2014a tree limb broke.\u00a0 And, he was dying, and I was certain it was God\u2019s will to heal Greg.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was positive I had as much faith as you could have, because I couldn\u2019t imagine\u2014this guy was sold out to Jesus, and Greg and I were growing in our walk with God.\u00a0 And, I was shocked when Greg died, even though they said he was going to die.\u00a0 I was just amazed.\u00a0 I was saying, \u201cLord, why?\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know how there are questions you ask, not where your faith is in jeopardy; but, instead, your faith is being refined and almost redefined.\u00a0 Because you realize, you know what, I am losing a certain faith, but the faith I\u2019m losing was a false faith.\u00a0 It\u2019s a faith that I\u2019d be better off without because it wasn\u2019t true to God\u2019s word.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause had I really come to grips with what God\u2019s Word said, I would have realized there was no promise of God to heal my friend, Greg; except, ultimately, in the resurrection\u2014where there will be healing for all of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The reason I asked that question is\u2026I think a lot of people can take a step back from a book like this, that is so comprehensive, and they can go, \u201cYes, Randy Alcorn has always been in the fold.\u00a0 He\u2019s always believed.\u00a0 Kind of grew up in a \u201cChristian womb\u201d of sorts, and was surrounded by people who believed and, has never struggled in his own faith.\u00a0 But, you have faced those moments.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I grew up in a non-Christian home.\u00a0 I had no faith in God, at all.\u00a0 Never went to church.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t read Bible storybooks\u2014anything like that.\u00a0 I was exposed to the Gospel when I was a teenager.\u00a0 I was skeptical, at first, but I thought, \u201cThese are pretty nice people,\u201d you know.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was one Bible in our home that I had gotten when I was in third grade.\u00a0 My mom took me to a local Methodist church one Sunday; and, it was the Sunday they gave out Bibles to third graders.\u00a0 And we had that, it was on the shelf, it had been unread all those years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m at home and because they\u2019re talking about things from the Bible at this church\u2019s youth group I\u2019m going to; I start reading it through.\u00a0 At first I\u2019m reading it like it\u2019s\u2026it\u2019s science fiction, or something.\u00a0 I mean it\u2019s just a story, or Greek mythology.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where did you start?\u00a0 Did you just\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 In Genesis, you know, there it was, right at the beginning.\u00a0 So I started, and I did, you know, flip around different places, didn\u2019t understand numbers of things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then I got to the Gospels, and I looked at Jesus.\u00a0 And, something resonated inside of me.\u00a0 It was a work of the Holy Spirit, drawing me to Himself.\u00a0 When I read the Gospels, they had the ring of truth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI saw in Jesus, someone who was not just part of a story.\u00a0 I realized there was something in me that testified to this being real.\u00a0 He was a real person.\u00a0 He said these real things.\u00a0 He dies on the cross.\u00a0 He rises from the dead, and I\u2019m realizing\u2014I\u2019m believing this, now.\u00a0 And I came to faith through reading the Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I came from a non-Christian and skeptical background.\u00a0 And there was a lot of resistance when I came to faith in Christ.\u00a0 My father, in particular, was not happy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a time here, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, over a number of months, and it was because of some things that were taking place in my life\u2014some challenges to my faith, that I quoted Tozer.\u00a0 I quoted the same statement.\u00a0 Bob knows what it is, even before I say it.\u00a0 But, it\u2019s something that you came to grips with, early in your Christian faith, and you\u2019ve continued to noodle on this, and chew on this, until ultimately, you\u2019ve penned a book about this.\u00a0 And what Tozer said, he said, \u201cThe most important thing about you\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Can you finish the rest of it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Uh, what you think of God?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s what you think about God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are your thoughts about who God is?\u00a0 His character?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What He\u2019s like?\u00a0 Is He a sovereign King?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Does He rule in the affairs of men and women, and nations?\u00a0 Does He care about the little stuff?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 And, Tozer\u2019s book, <em>The Knowledge of the Holy<\/em>, where he begins by talking about the most important thing about us is what we, at any given moment, think about God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, compared to that, our creeds about Him are really unimportant.\u00a0 Because we can say, \u201cWe believe this\u2026,\u201d we can check off the box in the doctrinal statement; but when it comes down to it, who do you believe God is?\u00a0 And who you do believe God is, is tested as we face evil and suffering in life.\u00a0 It\u2019s not really tested when things are going our way.\u00a0 It\u2019s when things aren\u2019t going our way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Got to get to the question, because our listeners are wondering, \u201cIf God is good, then why evil?\u201d\u00a0 Why doesn\u2019t He just pull out a giant, God-sized eraser, and just go, \u201cNo, let\u2019s eliminate that from the equation.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, that\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 And when you turn to Ephesians 1, you see God\u2019s promises about the things that He has purposed.\u00a0 He talks about the things that will be put into effect when the times have realized their fulfillment to bring all things in Heaven on Earth, together, under One Head, even Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat God had a plan where He took into account, what would be the very best thing He could do to bring glory to Himself, and to bring good to His children.\u00a0 And when He took that into account, He gave this gift of choice.\u00a0 Fully knowing that people would make the wrong choice; that Adam would sin, that we then would have this inherited sin; we would all sin in Adam.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat death and destruction, and suffering and evil would come into the world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, that He knew that as part of His redemptive plan (not as an afterthought)\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe (the second member of the Triune God\u2014Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), the Son would become a man.\u00a0 Become a child, to grow up to be a man.\u00a0 Live this perfect life.\u00a0 Atone for our sins on the cross.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, through His resurrection, would purchase something which has not yet been fully realized, but will be.\u00a0 And that is ultimate redemption\u2014a new Heaven, a new Earth.\u00a0 So that, the people of God, in eternity future, will be able to look back, and say, \u201cYes!\u00a0 All that evil and suffering, truly was worth it.\u00a0 Because God brought so much of a greater good out of it, than there would have been if it just would have been restricted to the goodness of an innocent Adam and Eve, in Eden.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow that\u2019s difficult for us to understand because we think, \u201cWell, I\u2019d rather just have gone with the innocent Adam and Eve.\u00a0 And then God just keep people from sinning.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight.\u00a0 Okay\u2026so, try that with your wife.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you could keep your\u2026make it so that your wife always loves you, and always thinks you\u2019re the wisest, the funniest person\u2014in other words, if you could have a Stepford wife.\u00a0 Snap your fingers and you could make it so that she always responded to you in this positive way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, wouldn\u2019t you do that?\u00a0 And of course, somebody might be tempted to do that for an hour\u2026or a day\u2026and then they would start going, this isn\u2019t real.\u00a0 Because she has no choice, except to love me.\u00a0 She\u2019s not really loving me and she\u2019s not really a human being.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause intrinsic to being a human being, is the ability to make a meaningful choice.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd meaningful choice does not exist unless we could make a wrong choice.\u00a0 And a wrong choice is not really a wrong choice if it does not have bad consequences.\u00a0 Just like a right choice isn\u2019t a right choice without consequences.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, so there\u2019s a big picture.\u00a0 A big story taking place here that is all about what God\u2019s trying to display, here in the universe.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, I know I\u2019m speaking for a listener right now, who isn\u2019t married to a Stepford husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer husband is anything but that.\u00a0 He\u2019s maybe unfaithful; he\u2019s been off into pornography; maybe has a problem with drugs or alcohol.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she\u2019s going, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t want a robot, but this life that I\u2019m looking at here, this is pretty grim.\u00a0 This is pretty tough.\u00a0 And, I\u2019m having a hard time.\u00a0 I\u2019m losing heart in believing the truth about God, because life is just kicking the daylights out of me.\u201d\u00a0 What would you say to her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, first of all, this is something I think we really have to emphasize\u2026and I do in \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>If God is Good<\/em>, and the smaller spinoffs from it.\u00a0 But, this woman is absolutely right to have a broken heart.\u00a0 And we would be absolutely wrong to minimize her pain by giving little theological, philosophical explanations in such a way that it would minimize that.\u00a0 What I love about God\u2019s Word is that it tells us the things it tells us, without minimizing our pain.\u00a0 In fact, it emphasizes our pain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExodus 3, God says, \u201cI have seen the misery of my people.\u00a0 I have heard them crying out.\u00a0 I am concerned about their suffering.\u201d\u00a0 And, so what does he do?\u00a0 He comes down.\u00a0 You say, \u201cWell, okay, but why hasn\u2019t He come down for this woman, yet?\u201d\u00a0 Well, He is going to, but when we call upon God, as Habakkuk did, saying, \u201cLord, how long are you going to tolerate this wrong?\u00a0 Why don\u2019t you end it right now?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we have to remember is, if God ended right now, all that was wrong, if he just kept her husband from doing what he\u2019s doing.\u00a0 Or, brought judgment upon him for doing it, right now, where would all of us be?\u00a0 Our lives would all end, right now.\u00a0 God does tolerate wrong for a time\u2014as a virtue that relates to His patience and His longsuffering; giving time for His plan to unfold.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is where faith comes in, because God never minimizes this woman\u2019s suffering, but what He does say is, \u201cLook at the scars on the hands and feet of my Son, and ask yourself whether these look like the hands of a God who doesn\u2019t care?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, He does care.\u00a0 And if nothing else gets through, in this whole question of wrestling with evil and suffering\u2014to me, as I say in the book, Jesus is the One Answer, who is bigger than all the questions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And on behalf of that woman, I want to say thanks for not minimizing her pain; \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbecause we have any number of listeners who are tuning in on this broadcast, who they\u2019re facing difficult issues.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s not a wayward husband; maybe it\u2019s a health issue with a child, a spouse, or yourself, or a loved one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLife doesn\u2019t always make sense.\u00a0 But, the thing I\u2019ve found is\u2014and I\u2019ve faced a couple of these key points in my life, Randy.\u00a0 One was when Barbara nearly died in 1976\u2014when we started FamiliyLife.\u00a0 Her heart rate raced to 300 beats a minute, and I just wondered, \u201cWhat are You up to, God?\u201d\u00a0 And one year, my dad died, my son had surgery, I was rushed to the hospital, and Barbara nearly died.\u00a0 All of what had been stable in my life, had been shaken.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, ultimately where I ended up on that afternoon, back in 1976\u2014actually, it was a summer in 1977 when I opened my Bible.\u00a0 I looked at it, and I go, \u201cYou know what\u2026either what this promises and says about God is true\u2014100 percent true\u2014or, it\u2019s not true at all. And I can\u2019t trust it, and I can\u2019t trust God.\u00a0 And, you know what?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know where else to turn, other than to the Scriptures and to God and place my faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s the other thing I wanted to thank you for, on behalf of the woman\u2026that you called her to faith.\u00a0 Because ultimately, that is our responsibility.\u00a0 To believe the truth about God, about life, about circumstances, and to lean into God on a day-to-day basis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you\u2019re not trying to suggest that\u2014 if someone will just get a copy of your book, and read it, and understand more about what the Bible has to say about God\u2019s goodness and His power, and the reality of evil\u2014 that all of a sudden they won\u2019t suffer as much.\u00a0 Because the suffering may continue but to understand that God is at work in it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, to respond by faith, as you were talking about and saying, \u201cGod, I trust You, and I believe that You know what you\u2019re doing, even when I can\u2019t see it.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the response we are called to.\u00a0 And the promise of Scripture is that God\u2019s goodness and His power will be vindicated;
