Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 How would things be different around your house if you treated your wife and your children more like they were customers?\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk about that today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, thanks for joining us.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking this week, really about high capacity individuals, people in positions of influence and power, and where there\u2019s money, and how that can be harmful to what\u2019s going on with the family, and what\u2019s going on in your life spiritually.\u00a0 I guess I\u2019m wondering, Dennis, if you were sitting with a guy who, has maybe listened to the program this week, and he says, \u201cI see myself in there.\u00a0 I just don\u2019t know how to get off the treadmill I\u2019m on.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how to rescue the situation, because I\u2019m just stuck where I am.\u201d\u00a0 What would you say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I think he needs to be like our guest on today\u2019s program, Louis Upkins.\u00a0 In fact I have it on good reputation that Louis, who wrote the book, <em>Treat Me Like a Customer:<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Using Lessons From Work to Succeed in Life<\/em>, and he\u2019s primarily focusing on marriage and family life.\u00a0 I have it on good record that Louis has always prided himself around selecting thoughtful gifts for his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>(<\/strong>Starts laughing.)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know where I\u2019m going with this don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I do know. (Laughs more)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He\u2019s always thought about it well in advance of having just the right gift for his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Somehow, I sense you may have slipped up at some point along the way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One Christmas Eve\u2026 go ahead Louis.\u00a0 You put your name on a book, this is what happens.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, here\u2019s the deal.\u00a0 Prior to getting married, I always shopped mentally for Charita.\u00a0 I would think about what I was going to get.\u00a0 I\u2019d start thinking about it in August, or whatever.\u00a0 But, I would have a visual of what I was going to do.\u00a0 Whether I was going to have a painting done or whether I was going to do something cool.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019re married, year one.\u00a0 I\u2019ve thought through the whole year, but I just don\u2019t like running to the mall.\u00a0 So, I would wait till the last day, a few hours before the mall closes, go in, get it, get out, get it wrapped, and get home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was going to say, there is a difference between shopping mentally and actually making the purchase.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, mentally, I know what it is that I\u2019m going to get.\u00a0 But then going to execute\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the question, do you get a point for shopping mentally?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughing) No.\u00a0 And you don\u2019t get a point for shopping at the last minute, and getting caught by the local television station, being asked, \u201cSir you\u2019re in the mall, can you tell us why you wait till the last minute to shop?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m not thinking, I start answering the question saying simply this, \u201cI shop mentally.\u00a0 I knew what I was going to get my wife, and just wanted to come in, and get out and\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Well, Charita happened to be watching television. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughs)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughing) That did not go over well.\u00a0 So I learned a valuable lesson, and the lesson is:\u00a0 it wasn\u2019t the quality of the gift, it was the time and attention put into the thought of the gift, and how I executed upon it.\u00a0 So, the lesson to me was, \u201cLouis, you have to treat that like you would if you were getting a gift for a client.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t go and get it in twelve seconds.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You wouldn\u2019t do it at the last minute thing there would you?\u00a0 No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You wouldn\u2019t do the last minute thing, you would have thought it out well, you would have planned it out well.\u00a0 It meant a lot more to her when she saw time and attention to the details.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When I saw the cover of your book, <em>Treat Me Like a Customer,<\/em> I thought, this is a business book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I convinced Bob to bring you in here for this interview because he said, \u201cThis is a business book Dennis.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But, then all of a sudden, I thought just that title, if a guy takes that title and mentally stops and thinks, \u201cIf I was going to treat my wife the way I treat customers, the way I value people in the business world,\u201d that could be revolutionary in their marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Here\u2019s a great example.\u00a0 There was a guy who read the book a couple of weeks ago.\u00a0 He sent me an e-mail and shared with me, the following day his wife sent him to the store to get a sandwich.\u00a0 He lives in Washington, D.C., he goes out, gets the sandwich, comes back, he\u2019s pulling in the driveway and he realizes, \u201cOh no, I got the wrong sandwich.\u201d\u00a0 Immediately, he thinks, \u201cShe\u2019ll get over it, she\u2019ll just eat it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen he thinks about this book he just read the night before.\u00a0 He said, \u201cIf this was a customer, I\u2019d turn around and go get the right sandwich.\u201d\u00a0 So, he makes a U-Turn, and goes back, buys the right sandwich, comes back home.\u00a0 He\u2019s a little inconvenienced.\u00a0 But now he says every morning to his wife, \u201cHow\u2019s my best customer doing, and how can I serve you?\u201d\u00a0 So, he took that small opportunity to value her, the way he would value if he brought back the incorrect sandwich to the client.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t take a lot of money; it doesn\u2019t take a lot of bells and whistles.\u00a0 It\u2019s really simple things, like turning your cell-phone off.\u00a0 What\u2019s that off button for?\u00a0 That\u2019s my favorite thing on the iPhone, \u201coff,\u201d turn it off.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because, if a client were sitting at my desk, and I was having a conversation, I would turn the phone off.\u00a0 Why can\u2019t we do the same thing at home over the dinner table?\u00a0 Why do we have to be checking out Blackberry or our e-mails while the kids are trying to talk to you?\u00a0 So, it\u2019s little things like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the things I appreciate about you is your honesty.\u00a0 You share in writing the book, how you started out your marriage with some bad habits, in terms of communicating, and when you would have an argument\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I would just leave!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Bail out, you\u2019d bail out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I thought I was doing the right thing.\u00a0 Let me tell you why.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Why did you think you were doing the right thing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Because, I thought I was avoiding conflict.\u00a0 You can shoot me through the radio but\u2014it was learned behavior.\u00a0 I watched my father do it, my father used to bail out.\u00a0 So if it got heated, I would think, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not going to argue, because I don\u2019t want to argue, I\u2019ll give myself time to calm down, give her time to calm down and we\u2019ll come back to it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, what I realized in that bad habit was, I was demeaning her.\u00a0 I was making her feel like she wasn\u2019t valued.\u00a0 When she shared that with me, then obviously, I made a very big adjustment, so I don\u2019t do that anymore.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I love the list you made besides bailing out.\u00a0 Others are:\u00a0 blaming others when you\u2019re criticized, rehashing past offenses that may have nothing to do with what your wife\u2019s talking about at the present.\u00a0 The next one is, using sarcasm, or pouting\u2014which is similar to bailing out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Sarcasm, for example, if a customer says something that we don\u2019t necessarily agree with, we have a way of masking how we feel, and we have a way of responding in a respectful way.\u00a0 But, we would never say to a customer, \u201cI assume it\u2019s your monthly cycle.\u201d\u00a0 Or \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I hope not, I hope we would not say that to a customer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We would never say that to a customer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Nor, should we say that to our wife, because it\u2019s insulting.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 I do remember.\u00a0 I just have to be honest here\u2014there were times early in my marriage when things would be a little tense around the house, and I would say to Mary Ann, \u201cIs your back hurting you?\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019d just say that gently, and quietly, and we developed this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you smirk, as you just smirk.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It sounds to me like he was patronizing her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Just trying to help her identify what might be at work here.\u00a0 Sometimes it worked, sometimes, I ducked.\u00a0 So, that\u2019s how that worked.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>All right Louis, in your book you talk about a number of communication principles that I think men could really benefit from.\u00a0 I like some of your language here.\u00a0 The first one you talk about is \u201cPerform a communication audit and inventory.\u201d\u00a0 What are you talking about there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, in our business, we would have a framework of how we would communicate with a customer, whether that\u2019s on a weekly, or a monthly basis, etcetera.\u00a0 You went down your checklist of the things you wanted to make sure were proceeding and that you wanted to make progress on.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe should do the same thing with our families.\u00a0 Actually take some time to sit down and say, \u201cLet\u2019s check in with the family calendar.\u201d\u00a0 But, really have a way in which we can establish a communication protocol.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t have to be business.\u00a0 This is just a tool in which we take what we do at work and bring it home.\u00a0 It can be fun, as we think about mission statements and things of that nature.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re working on that with our kids right now.\u00a0 It\u2019s been really cool.\u00a0 It has taken longer than it would probably take at a corporation, but it\u2019s been really cool watching the words that our kids are coming up with as we\u2019ve asked the question, what does our family stand for?\u00a0 So, they\u2019ve come up with a list of things.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to incorporate all of this into a mission statement that will be our mission statement as a family, just as you have a corporate mission statement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of the other principles you talked about in how a man can better communicate with his wife, that Barbara absolutely loves\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Which one?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve never told her that she really loves it, but she really does.\u00a0 It\u2019s when I take notes.\u00a0 When I take notes on what she\u2019s saying and I write it down.\u00a0 Then when I keep those notes and I pull them out and refer to them, that\u2019s worth two points.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s huge!\u00a0 Because, the deal is this, in a business meeting, you come with a pen and paper.\u00a0 Why? Because you want to capture what\u2019s been said and what\u2019s been communicated.\u00a0 The same premise if you\u2019re sitting down with your spouse or your husband and you\u2019re having this type of exchange, to say that I value what you\u2019re saying, I\u2019m going to make note of the things that I\u2019ve heard you say.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll listen to Charita over the course of the year.\u00a0 In the early days, I would go out and think about the best gift for Christmas or Valentine\u2019s.\u00a0 Now I\u2019ve got this little cheat sheet.\u00a0 She\u2019ll say, \u201cOh, I like this.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI love this.\u201d\u00a0 Or \u201cI like that.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ll just make note to self, note to self, note to self, then everything I show up with is really the things she\u2019s identified that I would have missed if I had just relied on memory.\u00a0 But, I\u2019ve made note to make sure I make her happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What do you mean by this, \u201cDon\u2019t just talk, connect.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Many times with men, we just say words, but we don\u2019t listen.\u00a0 We don\u2019t listen well.\u00a0 We almost take the approach that if she\u2019s talking, then I\u2019m checking out, and when I have something to say, I\u2019ll check back in.\u00a0 I think that when we are talking to our spouses, we have to connect, we have to give them the undivided attention and respect that we give to those that we are serving as customers, and we hear what they say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, simple practices, repeat back what you think you heard.\u00a0 Say, \u201cThis is what I think I heard you say.\u201d\u00a0 And you may have it right, or you may have it wrong.\u00a0 But, just that exchange gives them a sense that you\u2019re listening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you do check out, and your mind wanders away, don\u2019t fake it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(laughing) Don\u2019t come back with the wrong answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, exactly.\u00a0 Don\u2019t try to provide an answer when you haven\u2019t been listening.\u00a0 Instead just say, \u201cYou know sweetheart, I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 My mind started thinking about this thing I\u2019ve got to do over here, or this matter I have to attend to, would you restate that again.\u00a0 It really is important.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry.\u201d\u00a0 So, head it off at the pass.\u00a0 Don\u2019t get caught giving a wrong answer to a question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a very valid point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The way I do that is I just say, \u201cYou know what you just shared was so beautiful, would you just share that again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughs)The same grin.\u00a0 Did you see it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is important too when you\u2019re listening.\u00a0 I had an experience one time where I was talking to Mary Ann long distance.\u00a0 I\u2019m in the hotel room, and we\u2019re on the phone.\u00a0 I\u2019m smart enough that when I\u2019m on the phone with my wife in the hotel room, I put the TV on mute.\u00a0 But, somehow she could tell, in the conversation that something else was\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You checked out\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026vying for my attention.\u00a0 Because in the middle of it when I was going, \u201cUh huh,\u00a0 uh huh,\u201d\u00a0 She just said, \u201cOk goodbye.\u201d\u00a0 And I went, \u201cNo, no I\u2019m listening\u2026 I\u2019ll turn the TV off.\u201d\u00a0 We really do have to listen with the kind of attention that we would give to a valued customer.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t leave the TV on mute with a valued customer.\u00a0 You\u2019d say, \u201cI need to pay attention to what this guy is saying, because it could cost me the deal.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And it could cost you the deal in your marriage.\u00a0 The reality is, people view a customer in a profit-loss scenario.\u00a0 They don\u2019t necessarily view a family that way.\u00a0 But the cost of a broken family, divorce, and kids going through counseling that cost is significant.\u00a0 Often it doesn\u2019t show up right away.\u00a0 It shows up later in life because of unforgiveness, or because of lack of being present, all of these various things.\u00a0 It does cost you.\u00a0 And, it can also save you just by being available and being present.\u00a0 Just as present as you would be with your customers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It may seem to a man that being totally transparent or full-disclosure to his wife may cost him more than it\u2019s worth.\u00a0 But in reality, it could cost him his marriage as well.\u00a0 You actually had a text one day where this was put to the test.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did.\u00a0 Interestingly enough, I had a text from a number I didn\u2019t recognize, that asked me to call.\u00a0 And I did.\u00a0 When I called the number, first I stared at the number and thought, \u201cWho is this?\u201d\u00a0 Because I didn\u2019t recognize the number.\u00a0 Once I placed the call, I realized it was a girlfriend from back in college.\u00a0 She was involved with a business that was selling frozen food or steaks and stuff to your community.\u00a0 Someone had given her my information, because we had a mutual friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that Charita and I are really true to one another about is full disclosure.\u00a0 That was a very innocent, incident.\u00a0 But had I just kept that to myself, it could have found itself later and caused problems because I didn\u2019t disclose it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But, didn\u2019t you feel a little\u2014Just to come home and say, \u201cI had a funny thing happen today.\u00a0 I got a text message from an old girlfriend.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I had nothing to hide.\u00a0 So it was easy for me to say that.\u00a0 It was easy for her to respect that.\u00a0 Versus let\u2019s fast forward and use a different scenario:\u00a0 two months later, \u201cHey I just saw this text on your phone.\u00a0 Blah blah blah\u2026 And now you have to explain why you didn\u2019t talk about it two months ago.\u201d\u00a0 I think those are some of the same things in business, particularly in the 50123 space.\u00a0 They expect you to be full disclosure, and have ethics, and integrity and things of this nature.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe same thing is applicable at home.\u00a0 Cut some of the problems off on the front end.\u00a0 So you don\u2019t have to have a wastebasket of unnecessary issues because you\u2019ve chosen to keep things to yourself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Another avenue where that\u2019s occurring today is on Facebook.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think I read a report recently that it is quoted as, I think 20% of divorces in the divorce dock, Facebook is quoted as one of the problematic issues in the marriage.\u00a0 Where, people were establishing new lifestyles.\u00a0 Getting with old girlfriends or boyfriends, and all this kind of stuff in that closed community, because they are not sharing passwords, they are not making their spouse accessible to their world of friends and new friends that they have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As we\u2019ve talked about all of the principles that you\u2019ve learned in the marketplace, and how you\u2019ve learned to apply them at home as the CEO of the Upkins Family Corporation, what you\u2019ve written in your book really applies whether you\u2019re the Chief Executive Officer, or the Chief Operating Officer, in the family. Whether you\u2019re the husband or the wife, these principles apply don\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely.\u00a0 I think that more so today than in any other time, because we have a society of busyness where you\u2019re finding just as many working moms or over-committed mothers that are just doing so many things, focused on the community, volunteer activities, and all these different things that they are finding themselves missing out on the significance of family.\u00a0 That has proven itself in several instances where women have come up and said simply, \u201cNot only does my husband need this, but I need this book, because I have the same issue.\u201d\u00a0 So, I think it\u2019s really validating.\u00a0 It\u2019s a challenge across the board.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think one of the big problems in our culture is that there just aren\u2019t a lot of men like you speaking truth into marriages and families today.\u00a0 You\u2019re calling people to do something different from what the culture is mandating. You want them to be different from the drumbeat of success where they are being the pied piper and following along and taking promotions without evaluating what that promotion is going to do to them.\u00a0 You actually had one guy who had a promotion in front of him and he knew it might cost him his family.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 This gentlemen, for example, he\u2019s actually a relative.\u00a0 We saw him at a church event.\u00a0 He was sharing his excitement about this new job.\u00a0 I said, \u201cCongratulations!\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cBut, they\u2019ve got me a corporate apartment,\u201d and he begins to describe what this new promotion is going to look like.\u00a0 They\u2019ve bought him a corporate apartment because he\u2019s not going to be home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cWe\u2019ve just bought our dream home,\u201d and all these different things.\u00a0 As he\u2019s standing there talking about this new promotion and the revenue around it.\u00a0 Then you look at what he\u2019s going to lose as a result of the revenue around it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cMan, don\u2019t take the job.\u00a0 This is not worth it.\u00a0 You\u2019ve built your entire life to have a great family, not to have a lot of money paying for two households.\u00a0 Because you\u2019re going to lose them, and they\u2019re (the company) helping you to do that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you went up to most people and you said, I\u2019ll give you a hundred thousand dollars for you to live away from your home for a year, you won\u2019t see your kids or your wife for a year.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give you a hundred thousand dollars.\u201d\u00a0 I think most people would say, \u201cThat\u2019s not what I got married for.\u201d\u00a0 I want to see my kids some time.\u00a0 Yet that\u2019s what companies are doing.\u00a0 They\u2019re saying, we\u2019ll pay you $X amount if you\u2019ll just stay away from your wife and your kids.\u00a0 Guys are taking the bait.\u00a0 And, women are taking the bait.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Everybody\u2019s taking the bait.\u00a0 But, I think we\u2019re also approaching a time where, when you look at the economy and the change of culture, I think people are beginning to look back and say, \u201cWhat matters most to me?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the timing of this message is timeless.\u00a0 This is not just the fruit of the hour but I think that people are really taking a hard, strong look, at the end of the day, what matters to me?\u00a0 Is it that I make $40,000 a year, or $400,000 a year?\u00a0 Is it that I have three beach houses or one house?\u00a0 I think at the end of the day, people are simply saying, \u201cI want significance.\u00a0 I want family I want values, and I want memories.\u00a0 And, I don\u2019t want to spend the balance of my life regretting the best days of my life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Louis, I think you\u2019ve captured that in your book in challenging both men and women to march to a different drumbeat.\u00a0 To really go back and evaluate what their values are, where they\u2019re going to end up, and what kind of legacy they\u2019re going to leave.\u00a0 Bob, I feel like we\u2019ve met a new friend here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 One who I hope will come back and join us again to put the cookies on the lower shelf.\u00a0 I really appreciate just straight talk.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I thank you for that Dennis.\u00a0 I think at the end of the day, we as a culture are searching for the tools.\u00a0 I think we\u2019re hungry for answers, and I think what you\u2019ll find in the content of this book, is the simplicity of that answer.\u00a0 It\u2019s not rocket science; scenario.\u00a0 They don\u2019t necessarily view their family in that way.\u00a0 But, the cost of a broken family, the cost of divorce, the cost of kids going through counseling\u2014that cost is significant.\u00a0 And, often it doesn\u2019t show up right away.\u00a0 It shows up later in life because of unforgiveness or because of lack of being present, all of these various things.\u00a0 It does cost you, and it can also save you just by being available and being present\u2014just as present as you would be with your Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 How would things be different around your house if you treated your wife and your children more like they were customers?\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk about that today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, thanks for joining us.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking this week, really about high capacity individuals, people in positions of influence and power, and where there\u2019s money, and how that can be harmful to what\u2019s going on with the family, and what\u2019s going on in your life spiritually.\u00a0 I guess I\u2019m wondering, Dennis, if you were sitting with a guy who, has maybe listened to the program this week, and he says, \u201cI see myself in there.\u00a0 I just don\u2019t know how to get off the treadmill I\u2019m on.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how to rescue the situation, because I\u2019m just stuck where I am.\u201d\u00a0 What would you say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I think he needs to be like our guest on today\u2019s program, Louis Upkins.\u00a0 In fact I have it on good reputation that Louis, who wrote the book, <em>Treat Me Like a Customer:<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Using Lessons From Work to Succeed in Life<\/em>, and he\u2019s primarily focusing on marriage and family life.\u00a0 I have it on good record that Louis has always prided himself around selecting thoughtful gifts for his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>(<\/strong>Starts laughing.)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know where I\u2019m going with this don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I do know. (Laughs more)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He\u2019s always thought about it well in advance of having just the right gift for his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Somehow, I sense you may have slipped up at some point along the way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One Christmas Eve\u2026 go ahead Louis.\u00a0 You put your name on a book, this is what happens.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, here\u2019s the deal.\u00a0 Prior to getting married, I always shopped mentally for Charita.\u00a0 I would think about what I was going to get.\u00a0 I\u2019d start thinking about it in August, or whatever.\u00a0 But, I would have a visual of what I was going to do.\u00a0 Whether I was going to have a painting done or whether I was going to do something cool.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019re married, year one.\u00a0 I\u2019ve thought through the whole year, but I just don\u2019t like running to the mall.\u00a0 So, I would wait till the last day, a few hours before the mall closes, go in, get it, get out, get it wrapped, and get home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was going to say, there is a difference between shopping mentally and actually making the purchase.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, mentally, I know what it is that I\u2019m going to get.\u00a0 But then going to execute\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the question, do you get a point for shopping mentally?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughing) No.\u00a0 And you don\u2019t get a point for shopping at the last minute, and getting caught by the local television station, being asked, \u201cSir you\u2019re in the mall, can you tell us why you wait till the last minute to shop?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m not thinking, I start answering the question saying simply this, \u201cI shop mentally.\u00a0 I knew what I was going to get my wife, and just wanted to come in, and get out and\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Well, Charita happened to be watching television. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughs)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughing) That did not go over well.\u00a0 So I learned a valuable lesson, and the lesson is:\u00a0 it wasn\u2019t the quality of the gift, it was the time and attention put into the thought of the gift, and how I executed upon it.\u00a0 So, the lesson to me was, \u201cLouis, you have to treat that like you would if you were getting a gift for a client.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t go and get it in twelve seconds.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You wouldn\u2019t do it at the last minute thing there would you?\u00a0 No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You wouldn\u2019t do the last minute thing, you would have thought it out well, you would have planned it out well.\u00a0 It meant a lot more to her when she saw time and attention to the details.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When I saw the cover of your book, <em>Treat Me Like a Customer,<\/em> I thought, this is a business book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I convinced Bob to bring you in here for this interview because he said, \u201cThis is a business book Dennis.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But, then all of a sudden, I thought just that title, if a guy takes that title and mentally stops and thinks, \u201cIf I was going to treat my wife the way I treat customers, the way I value people in the business world,\u201d that could be revolutionary in their marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Here\u2019s a great example.\u00a0 There was a guy who read the book a couple of weeks ago.\u00a0 He sent me an e-mail and shared with me, the following day his wife sent him to the store to get a sandwich.\u00a0 He lives in Washington, D.C., he goes out, gets the sandwich, comes back, he\u2019s pulling in the driveway and he realizes, \u201cOh no, I got the wrong sandwich.\u201d\u00a0 Immediately, he thinks, \u201cShe\u2019ll get over it, she\u2019ll just eat it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen he thinks about this book he just read the night before.\u00a0 He said, \u201cIf this was a customer, I\u2019d turn around and go get the right sandwich.\u201d\u00a0 So, he makes a U-Turn, and goes back, buys the right sandwich, comes back home.\u00a0 He\u2019s a little inconvenienced.\u00a0 But now he says every morning to his wife, \u201cHow\u2019s my best customer doing, and how can I serve you?\u201d\u00a0 So, he took that small opportunity to value her, the way he would value if he brought back the incorrect sandwich to the client.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t take a lot of money; it doesn\u2019t take a lot of bells and whistles.\u00a0 It\u2019s really simple things, like turning your cell-phone off.\u00a0 What\u2019s that off button for?\u00a0 That\u2019s my favorite thing on the iPhone, \u201coff,\u201d turn it off.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because, if a client were sitting at my desk, and I was having a conversation, I would turn the phone off.\u00a0 Why can\u2019t we do the same thing at home over the dinner table?\u00a0 Why do we have to be checking out Blackberry or our e-mails while the kids are trying to talk to you?\u00a0 So, it\u2019s little things like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the things I appreciate about you is your honesty.\u00a0 You share in writing the book, how you started out your marriage with some bad habits, in terms of communicating, and when you would have an argument\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I would just leave!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Bail out, you\u2019d bail out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I thought I was doing the right thing.\u00a0 Let me tell you why.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Why did you think you were doing the right thing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Because, I thought I was avoiding conflict.\u00a0 You can shoot me through the radio but\u2014it was learned behavior.\u00a0 I watched my father do it, my father used to bail out.\u00a0 So if it got heated, I would think, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not going to argue, because I don\u2019t want to argue, I\u2019ll give myself time to calm down, give her time to calm down and we\u2019ll come back to it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, what I realized in that bad habit was, I was demeaning her.\u00a0 I was making her feel like she wasn\u2019t valued.\u00a0 When she shared that with me, then obviously, I made a very big adjustment, so I don\u2019t do that anymore.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I love the list you made besides bailing out.\u00a0 Others are:\u00a0 blaming others when you\u2019re criticized, rehashing past offenses that may have nothing to do with what your wife\u2019s talking about at the present.\u00a0 The next one is, using sarcasm, or pouting\u2014which is similar to bailing out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Sarcasm, for example, if a customer says something that we don\u2019t necessarily agree with, we have a way of masking how we feel, and we have a way of responding in a respectful way.\u00a0 But, we would never say to a customer, \u201cI assume it\u2019s your monthly cycle.\u201d\u00a0 Or \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I hope not, I hope we would not say that to a customer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We would never say that to a customer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Nor, should we say that to our wife, because it\u2019s insulting.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 I do remember.\u00a0 I just have to be honest here\u2014there were times early in my marriage when things would be a little tense around the house, and I would say to Mary Ann, \u201cIs your back hurting you?\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019d just say that gently, and quietly, and we developed this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you smirk, as you just did?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, no, I did not smirk.\u00a0 I learned not to smirk.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It sounds to me like he was patronizing her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Just trying to help her identify what might be at work here.\u00a0 Sometimes it worked, sometimes, I ducked.\u00a0 So, that\u2019s how that worked.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>All right Louis, in your book you talk about a number of communication principles that I think men could really benefit from.\u00a0 I like some of your language here.\u00a0 The first one you talk about is \u201cPerform a communication audit and inventory.\u201d\u00a0 What are you talking about there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, in our business, we would have a framework of how we would communicate with a customer, whether that\u2019s on a weekly, or a monthly basis, etcetera.\u00a0 You went down your checklist of the things you wanted to make sure were proceeding and that you wanted to make progress on.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe should do the same thing with our families.\u00a0 Actually take some time to sit down and say, \u201cLet\u2019s check in with the family calendar.\u201d\u00a0 But, really have a way in which we can establish a communication protocol.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t have to be business.\u00a0 This is just a tool in which we take what we do at work and bring it home.\u00a0 It can be fun, as we think about mission statements and things of that nature.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re working on that with our kids right now.\u00a0 It\u2019s been really cool.\u00a0 It has taken longer than it would probably take at a corporation, but it\u2019s been really cool watching the words that our kids are coming up with as we\u2019ve asked the question, what does our family stand for?\u00a0 So, they\u2019ve come up with a list of things.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to incorporate all of this into a mission statement that will be our mission statement as a family, just as you have a corporate mission statement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of the other principles you talked about in how a man can better communicate with his wife, that Barbara absolutely loves\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Which one?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve never told her that she really loves it, but she really does.\u00a0 It\u2019s when I take notes.\u00a0 When I take notes on what she\u2019s saying and I write it down.\u00a0 Then when I keep those notes and I pull them out and refer to them, that\u2019s worth two points.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s huge!\u00a0 Because, the deal is this, in a business meeting, you come with a pen and paper.\u00a0 Why? Because you want to capture what\u2019s been said and what\u2019s been communicated.\u00a0 The same premise if you\u2019re sitting down with your spouse or your husband and you\u2019re having this type of exchange, to say that I value what you\u2019re saying, I\u2019m going to make note of the things that I\u2019ve heard you say.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll listen to Charita over the course of the year.\u00a0 In the early days, I would go out and think about the best gift for Christmas or Valentine\u2019s.\u00a0 Now I\u2019ve got this little cheat sheet.\u00a0 She\u2019ll say, \u201cOh, I like this.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI love this.\u201d\u00a0 Or \u201cI like that.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ll just make note to self, note to self, note to self, then everything I show up with is really the things she\u2019s identified that I would have missed if I had just relied on memory.\u00a0 But, I\u2019ve made note to make sure I make her happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What do you mean by this, \u201cDon\u2019t just talk, connect.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Many times with men, we just say words, but we don\u2019t listen.\u00a0 We don\u2019t listen well.\u00a0 We almost take the approach that if she\u2019s talking, then I\u2019m checking out, and when I have something to say, I\u2019ll check back in.\u00a0 I think that when we are talking to our spouses, we have to connect, we have to give them the undivided attention and respect that we give to those that we are serving as customers, and we hear what they say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, simple practices, repeat back what you think you heard.\u00a0 Say, \u201cThis is what I think I heard you say.\u201d\u00a0 And you may have it right, or you may have it wrong.\u00a0 But, just that exchange gives them a sense that you\u2019re listening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you do check out, and your mind wanders away, don\u2019t fake it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(laughing) Don\u2019t come back with the wrong answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, exactly.\u00a0 Don\u2019t try to provide an answer when you haven\u2019t been listening.\u00a0 Instead just say, \u201cYou know sweetheart, I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 My mind started thinking about this thing I\u2019ve got to do over here, or this matter I have to attend to, would you restate that again.\u00a0 It really is important.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry.\u201d\u00a0 So, head it off at the pass.\u00a0 Don\u2019t get caught giving a wrong answer to a question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a very valid point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The way I do that is I just say, \u201cYou know what you just shared was so beautiful, would you just share that again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughs)The same grin.\u00a0 Did you see it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is important too when you\u2019re listening.\u00a0 I had an experience one time where I was talking to Mary Ann long distance.\u00a0 I\u2019m in the hotel room, and we\u2019re on the phone.\u00a0 I\u2019m smart enough that when I\u2019m on the phone with my wife in the hotel room, I put the TV on mute.\u00a0 But, somehow she could tell, in the conversation that something else was\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You checked out\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026vying for my attention.\u00a0 Because in the middle of it when I was going, \u201cUh huh,\u00a0 uh huh,\u201d\u00a0 She just said, \u201cOk goodbye.\u201d\u00a0 And I went, \u201cNo, no I\u2019m listening\u2026 I\u2019ll turn the TV off.\u201d\u00a0 We really do have to listen with the kind of attention that we would give to a valued customer.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t leave the TV on mute with a valued customer.\u00a0 You\u2019d say, \u201cI need to pay attention to what this guy is saying, because it could cost me the deal.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And it could cost you the deal in your marriage.\u00a0 The reality is, people view a customer in a profit-loss scenario.\u00a0 They don\u2019t necessarily view a family that way.\u00a0 But the cost of a broken family, divorce, and kids going through counseling that cost is significant.\u00a0 Often it doesn\u2019t show up right away.\u00a0 It shows up later in life because of unforgiveness, or because of lack of being present, all of these various things.\u00a0 It does cost you.\u00a0 And, it can also save you just by being available and being present.\u00a0 Just as present as you would be with your customers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It may seem to a man that being totally transparent or full-disclosure to his wife may cost him more than it\u2019s worth.\u00a0 But in reality, it could cost him his marriage as well.\u00a0 You actually had a text one day where this was put to the test.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did.\u00a0 Interestingly enough, I had a text from a number I didn\u2019t recognize, that asked me to call.\u00a0 And I did.\u00a0 When I called the number, first I stared at the number and thought, \u201cWho is this?\u201d\u00a0 Because I didn\u2019t recognize the number.\u00a0 Once I placed the call, I realized it was a girlfriend from back in college.\u00a0 She was involved with a business that was selling frozen food or steaks and stuff to your community.\u00a0 Someone had given her my information, because we had a mutual friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that Charita and I are really true to one another about is full disclosure.\u00a0 That was a very innocent, incident.\u00a0 But had I just kept that to myself, it could have found itself later and caused problems because I didn\u2019t disclose it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But, didn\u2019t you feel a little\u2014Just to come home and say, \u201cI had a funny thing happen today.\u00a0 I got a text message from an old girlfriend.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I had nothing to hide.\u00a0 So it was easy for me to say that.\u00a0 It was easy for her to respect that.\u00a0 Versus let\u2019s fast forward and use a different scenario:\u00a0 two months later, \u201cHey I just saw this text on your phone.\u00a0 Blah blah blah\u2026 And now you have to explain why you didn\u2019t talk about it two months ago.\u201d\u00a0 I think those are some of the same things in business, particularly in the 50123 space.\u00a0 They expect you to be full disclosure, and have ethics, and integrity and things of this nature.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe same thing is applicable at home.\u00a0 Cut some of the problems off on the front end.\u00a0 So you don\u2019t have to have a wastebasket of unnecessary issues because you\u2019ve chosen to keep things to yourself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Another avenue where that\u2019s occurring today is on Facebook.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think I read a report recently that it is quoted as, I think 20% of divorces in the divorce dock, Facebook is quoted as one of the problematic issues in the marriage.\u00a0 Where, people were establishing new lifestyles.\u00a0 Getting with old girlfriends or boyfriends, and all this kind of stuff in that closed community, because they are not sharing passwords, they are not making their spouse accessible to their world of friends and new friends that they have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As we\u2019ve talked about all of the principles that you\u2019ve learned in the marketplace, and how you\u2019ve learned to apply them at home as the CEO of the Upkins Family Corporation, what you\u2019ve written in your book really applies whether you\u2019re the Chief Executive Officer, or the Chief Operating Officer, in the family. Whether you\u2019re the husband or the wife, these principles apply don\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely.\u00a0 I think that more so today than in any other time, because we have a society of busyness where you\u2019re finding just as many working moms or over-committed mothers that are just doing so many things, focused on the community, volunteer activities, and all these different things that they are finding themselves missing out on the significance of family.\u00a0 That has proven itself in several instances where women have come up and said simply, \u201cNot only does my husband need this, but I need this book, because I have the same issue.\u201d\u00a0 So, I think it\u2019s really validating.\u00a0 It\u2019s a challenge across the board.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think one of the big problems in our culture is that there just aren\u2019t a lot of men like you speaking truth into marriages and families today.\u00a0 You\u2019re calling people to do something different from what the culture is mandating. You want them to be different from the drumbeat of success where they are being the pied piper and following along and taking promotions without evaluating what that promotion is going to do to them.\u00a0 You actually had one guy who had a promotion in front of him and he knew it might cost him his family.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 This gentlemen, for example, he\u2019s actually a relative.\u00a0 We saw him at a church event.\u00a0 He was sharing his excitement about this new job.\u00a0 I said, \u201cCongratulations!\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cBut, they\u2019ve got me a corporate apartment,\u201d and he begins to describe what this new promotion is going to look like.\u00a0 They\u2019ve bought him a corporate apartment because he\u2019s not going to be home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cWe\u2019ve just bought our dream home,\u201d and all these different things.\u00a0 As he\u2019s standing there talking about this new promotion and the revenue around it.\u00a0 Then you look at what he\u2019s going to lose as a result of the revenue around it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cMan, don\u2019t take the job.\u00a0 This is not worth it.\u00a0 You\u2019ve built your entire life to have a great family, not to have a lot of money paying for two households.\u00a0 Because you\u2019re going to lose them, and they\u2019re (the company) helping you to do that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you went up to most people and you said, I\u2019ll give you a hundred thousand dollars for you to live away from your home for a year, you won\u2019t see your kids or your wife for a year.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give you a hundred thousand dollars.\u201d\u00a0 I think most people would say, \u201cThat\u2019s not what I got married for.\u201d\u00a0 I want to see my kids some time.\u00a0 Yet that\u2019s what companies are doing.\u00a0 They\u2019re saying, we\u2019ll pay you $X amount if you\u2019ll just stay away from your wife and your kids.\u00a0 Guys are taking the bait.\u00a0 And, women are taking the bait.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Everybody\u2019s taking the bait.\u00a0 But, I think we\u2019re also approaching a time where, when you look at the economy and the change of culture, I think people are beginning to look back and say, \u201cWhat matters most to me?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the timing of this message is timeless.\u00a0 This is not just the fruit of the hour but I think that people are really taking a hard, strong look, at the end of the day, what matters to me?\u00a0 Is it that I make $40,000 a year, or $400,000 a year?\u00a0 Is it that I have three beach houses or one house?\u00a0 I think at the end of the day, people are simply saying, \u201cI want significance.\u00a0 I want family I want values, and I want memories.\u00a0 And, I don\u2019t want to spend the balance of my life regretting the best days of my life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Louis, I think you\u2019ve captured that in your book in challenging both men and women to march to a different drumbeat.\u00a0 To really go back and evaluate what their values are, where they\u2019re going to end up, and what kind of legacy they\u2019re going to leave.\u00a0 Bob, I feel like we\u2019ve met a new friend here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 One who I hope will come back and join us again to put the cookies on the lower shelf.\u00a0 I really appreciate just straight talk.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Louis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I thank you for that Dennis.\u00a0 I think at the end of the day, we as a culture are searching for the tools.\u00a0 I think we\u2019re hungry for answers, and I think what you\u2019ll find in the content of this book, is the simplicity of that answer.\u00a0 It\u2019s not rocket science;
