Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 David Pierce shares what happened on the side of Pike\u2019s Peak and in his own heart as he shares his story today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, thanks for joining us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019d better watch your \u201cP\u201ds and \u201cQ\u201ds on today\u2019s broadcast, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Why is that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We\u2019ve got an English professor in the studio with us.\u00a0 I mean, my goodness!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And you think I\u2019d better watch <u>my<\/u> \u201cP\u201ds and \u201cQ\u201ds?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll take that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m going to turn it right back at you baby!\u00a0 Right back at you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll introduce our professor David Pierce and welcome him to the broadcast.\u00a0 Welcome David.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you very much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0 You don\u2019t understand Bob\u2019s jousting with me.\u00a0 I grew up in Southwest Missouri where English grammar was taught as a third language.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t exactly have the best of grammar when I started <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 But now, it\u2019s flawless.\u00a0 It\u2019s absolutely flawless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is, impeccable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I can hear that.\u00a0 Now, I do grammar on paper.\u00a0 When I speak I don\u2019t do a whole lot of decent grammar.\u00a0 When I mess up people always point it out, \u201cHey, you\u2019re a professor, you should know better.\u201d\u00a0 So my defense is, I was speaking dialect, and I get away with that.\u00a0 So, you can use that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Whatever works for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>David is a professor of English at Middle Tennessee State University. He also teaches at Taylor University in Fort Wayne, Indiana.\u00a0 So, you commute a couple of times a year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right, I\u2019ve done that a couple of times now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He and his wife live in the middle of Tennessee to be able to teach there.\u00a0 He\u2019s written a book called <em>Don\u2019t Let Me Go<\/em>.\u00a0 I really liked what you\u2019ve written here.\u00a0 Because I read the book that started you out on this journey, <em>Into Thin Air<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>John Krakauer, I\u2019m a fan of his.\u00a0 I love his writing.\u00a0 But I nearly froze to death while reading that book.\u00a0 It\u2019s the story of how several people lost their lives on top of Mount Everest.\u00a0 But that caused you to begin a journey that ultimately ended up with you climbing some mountains.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It did.\u00a0 I was in my office minding my own business when my daughter, who was 15 at the time, came in.\u00a0 She had that book under her arm.\u00a0 I saw it, I saw the title.\u00a0 I\u2019d heard about it, but I hadn\u2019t read it yet.\u00a0 But I knew that something bad happened, and people had died.\u00a0 She came in, and I said, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cDad, can we climb a mountain?\u201d\u00a0 I saw the book and said, \u201cReally, after reading that you still want to do this?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cYes.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was so determined.\u00a0 She had done the research and she said, \u201cYou know, there\u2019s a mountain out west called Pike\u2019s Peak.\u00a0 I read that there\u2019s a trail all the way to the top.\u00a0 At the top is a souvenir shop that serves ice cream.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWell, how hard could that be?\u201d\u00a0 She was so determined, and I knew she had her heart set on it.\u00a0 So, I said, \u201cOK, I will.\u201d And, that was a turning point.\u00a0 We went and got matching backpacks, and I thought \u201cThis is going to be a fun trip.\u201d\u00a0 So we flew out there a couple of months later, caught a cab to the trail head and started up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wait a second, we\u2019ve got to have a little background on your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you just buy backpacks, and say, \u201cLet\u2019s go to the top of the mountain,\u201d?\u00a0 Was there any preparation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Training?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Training?\u00a0 Chera was on the track team. So, she was running, she was training.\u00a0 We had moved into a new house so I was doing some landscaping.\u00a0 She said, \u201cDad, don\u2019t you think you ought to run or train a little bit?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019ve been doing some gardening.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019s going to be good enough.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, pulling those turnips, that will get you ready for climbing at about ten thousand feet.\u00a0 That will get you ready.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did have to apologize later, I said, \u201cYou know what Chera, I think you were right.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think planting shrubbery is the proper training for climbing a mountain.\u00a0 But, we didn\u2019t know what to do.\u00a0 She had a dream, we had an internet map, and we said, \u201cLet\u2019s just go climb this mountain.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go knock this out.\u201d\u00a0 This is what she wants to do.\u00a0 I\u2019ll do this with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think, before we get on the mountain, we have to have a little background on your daughter, and your family.\u00a0 You used to have a show that you performed at your place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We did, the name is no surprise, I don\u2019t think.\u00a0 \u201cThe Pierce Family Show.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Not very creative\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, she was four and I didn\u2019t want to get into a lot of metaphors and things like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve got a synonym finder that you could use.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I could have used that, yes.\u00a0 But, we would play this game in the living room that was a mirror on the wall, and she was three or four years old.\u00a0 So, I would hold her on my hip.\u00a0 We would come running onto the screen, which was the mirror.\u00a0 We could see ourselves.\u00a0 I\u2019d say, \u201cWelcome everybody to the Pierce Family TV Show!\u00a0 My name is David.\u201d\u00a0 She\u2019d go, \u201cMy name is Chera!\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019d wave and smile and everything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a talk show, kind of like this.\u00a0 We would interview people.\u00a0 I said, \u201cToday we are going to interview\u2026\u201d and I would think of something, and I thought of, \u201c\u2026the man who lives at the top of the volcano.\u201d\u00a0 She was so tickled with that.\u00a0 She would ask all the questions.\u00a0 She had a spoon for a microphone, and she said, \u201cOK, what do you eat for dinner?\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019d say, \u201cHot beans.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you drink?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cHot chocolate.\u201d\u00a0 Everything was hot, hot, hot.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we would do this, and we\u2019d take a commercial break.\u00a0 I\u2019d go over and straighten out her hair and fix her makeup and everything.\u00a0 Then we\u2019d run back out in front of the mirror.\u00a0 I\u2019d give a little tease.\u00a0 I\u2019d say, \u201cAlright next week, we\u2019re going to interview\u2026\u201d\u00a0 \u201c\u2026the man that lives at the top of the volcano.\u201d\u00a0 She couldn\u2019t get away from that.\u00a0 I think one time we interviewed the man in the hot air balloon, but she asked him, \u201cWhat is the man at the top of the volcano doing right now?\u201d\u00a0 She was obsessed with the man at the top of the volcano.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, as you talked about this idea of climbing the mountain, what did the rest of your family think about it?\u00a0 Did your wife think it was a great idea?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t think she knew the extent of this mountain climbing thing.\u00a0 I had downplayed it a little bit.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s a trail, a walking trail.\u00a0 We don\u2019t need ropes or anything like that.\u201d\u00a0 I talked about the ice cream at the top.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let me just back up.\u00a0 There are a lot of 15-year-old girls who might pop into their dad\u2019s study and say, \u201cI want to climb a mountain.\u201d\u00a0 And Dad will say, \u201cWell, maybe someday we could do that.\u201d\u00a0 And, he\u2019s just waiting for her to leave and then hoping she\u2019ll forget the dream.\u00a0 You really latched onto this and thought, \u201cThis is something significant here.\u201d\u00a0 You didn\u2019t just let it die. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 I did sense that There was something in me that said, \u201cYou need to do this.\u00a0 Even though it\u2019s hard, go ahead and do it and see what happens.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>OK, so we\u2019re at the base of Pike\u2019s Peak, you actually made this journey on Labor Day 1999.\u00a0 What\u2019s the altitude where the trail starts?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think we started out at about 6700 feet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re going up to 14+ right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>14,110 feet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s just a mile and something up in the sky.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And change, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, as the crow flies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But you weren\u2019t flying the way the crow flies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That would be a turbo-prop crow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, it sounds easy when you say, \u201cOh you start at 6,000 and go up a mile, no big deal.\u201d\u00a0 But, the trail is 13 miles long.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>OK\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, you\u2019re gaining in altitude of a little more than a mile. So, there was a lot of zigzagging on the side of that mountain.\u00a0 Back and forth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How far into the hike before you thought to yourself \u201cGardening was not sufficient to be ready for this adventure.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think it was eight feet, because the way we started.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey told us the trail head is \u201cjust over there.\u201d\u00a0 We were so new at this.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know what a trail head was.\u00a0 I had my backpack on, the man said, \u201cIt\u2019s over there.\u201d\u00a0 We saw a path going through the weeds.\u00a0 I said, \u201cThat must be it.\u201d\u00a0 So we went over there, and it was an eight foot climb, and it leveled off.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChera got up and slipped and I caught her.\u00a0 She got up again and said, \u201cCome on Dad.\u201d\u00a0 So I got a little running start which is not a good idea at 6700 feet.\u00a0 I grabbed a hold of the grass and pulled myself up.\u00a0 We got to the top and I was bent over.\u00a0 I felt like I was dying, and I was wheezing.\u00a0 I said, \u201cMaybe that\u2019s the toughest part of the trail, right there.\u00a0 Maybe this is where everybody dies.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we walk through this little meadow, and we come to a big parking lot.\u00a0 Across the parking lot is a big sign that says, \u201cTrail Head.\u201d\u00a0 And Chera said, \u201cOh there it is Dad!\u201d\u00a0 I was already dying and we hadn\u2019t even started officially.\u00a0 So eight feet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And you realized, I should have done more than gardening on this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I thought, no shrubbery in the world could prepare you for this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, tell us about the first day\u2019s hike.\u00a0 How far did you go, how high were you by the time you finished?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Our goal was to get to the base camp.\u00a0 It\u2019s called \u201cBar Camp.\u201d\u00a0 It was about seven miles up.\u00a0 That was our goal.\u00a0 So we headed out, and we stopped a lot.\u00a0 We had lots of water and we would stop and meet people and talk to people.\u00a0 For the first couple of miles we met this fellow we called \u201cEncyclopedia man.\u201d\u00a0 Chera was making up names for people all the time, and he was Encyclopedia Man because he knew everything about the trail.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did he know about the guy on top of the volcano?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, he didn\u2019t know about him.\u00a0 We did have that over him.\u00a0 But, we would stop.\u00a0 The first time we met him we said, \u201cI wonder how high we are?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou are at 7,102 feet.\u201d\u00a0 And we thought, how do you know that?\u00a0\u00a0 His buddy was with him, and said, \u201cThis guy knows everything about this trail.\u201d\u00a0 So we tagged along with him for a while.\u00a0 Then, finally he peeled off and went back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got to a point just before camp, and we were sitting on this big rock, and these gentlemen are coming down.\u00a0 They said, \u201cOh, you\u2019re sitting on depression rock.\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cWhy do you call it depression rock?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cBecause if you look back there\u2026\u201d He turned around and pointed up.\u00a0 You could see the peak of the mountain.\u00a0 And you can see a little tiny rectangular building.\u00a0 That was the souvenir shop where the ice cream is.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThat\u2019s where you\u2019re going.\u00a0 And it\u2019s so far away it\u2019s really depressing isn\u2019t it?\u201d\u00a0 We were thinking, \u201cOh yes.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve obviously never hiked this trail.\u00a0 Most of us haven\u2019t.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking that it\u2019s like a normal hiking trail except there are parts where the incline is pretty good.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, what makes it difficult, Bob is there are parts of this trail where there is no oxygen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Is that right?\u00a0 You run out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Am I right David or not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes.\u00a0 We lost oxygen a lot.\u00a0 There are parts that are not too bad.\u00a0 Then there are parts where it is mile after mile of \u201cStairmaster,\u201d where one is always stepping up.\u00a0 Of course we had on backpacks\u2014mine was 40 pounds, hers was 30\u2014so that pulled us down.\u00a0 And every step up the air is a little bit thinner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You got to base camp the first night right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We got there right at nightfall.\u00a0 We made it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Was the weather OK?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Until we went to sleep.\u00a0 We had the tent set up; we ate some crunchy stuff that was supposed to be chicken teriyaki.\u00a0 We ate part of it and decided that was enough to keep us alive.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we climbed into our little tent.\u00a0 And, just as we were lying there, ready to go to sleep, it began to rain.\u00a0 It was a two-man tent.\u00a0 So, I crawled out and pulled our backpacks in and just laid them on top of us.\u00a0 So, the first night was miserable.\u00a0 We came out the next morning and the altitude had swelled us up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked and my hands were swollen.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWow, that feels weird.\u201d\u00a0 And Chera looked at me and said, \u201cDad, you don\u2019t even look like yourself.\u201d\u00a0 Her face was all puffy and everything.\u00a0 The first night was miserable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Was there any thought of, \u201cOK we\u2019ve gone to base camp, let\u2019s just call this the adventure and be done with it.\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Chera would not entertain that.\u00a0 We figured, we have the whole weekend, we\u2019ll just take our time.\u00a0 But, we did scrap breakfast.\u00a0 They serve breakfast at base camp for like $5 bucks.\u00a0 So I grabbed $5 bucks and said, \u201cLet\u2019s go get some breakfast.\u201d\u00a0 So, we had pancakes and then headed to the summit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As you headed to the summit on the second day, you encountered a series of steps?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 As you get toward the top, there\u2019s a thing called 16 Golden Stairs.\u00a0 Now, Fred Barr built this trail back in 1918.\u00a0 What he would do is, he would work in the coal mines during the winter time, save his money to buy dynamite and during the summertime he would blow up rocks to make this trail.\u00a0 We get to the 16 Golden Stairs, and sometimes you are just crawling, getting over rocks and through passages.\u00a0 We got the feeling that Fred ran out of money at about this point, because, there were too many rocks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No dynamite huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, he ran out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It wouldn\u2019t go off up there, not enough oxygen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Maybe that was it.\u00a0 The rocks were still there Fred.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Here is one of my great fears, my great fear is to be climbing a mountain like this and slip and fall.\u00a0 Like a 5,000 foot free fall.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We had moments.\u00a0 There are times when I was there I thought, \u201cDid OSHA inspect this trail?\u00a0 Because this is dangerous.\u201d\u00a0 There are some places that are pretty sheer, and you don\u2019t want to get too close.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, I\u2019m up here with my daughter, and this is a little spooky, so keep moving along, keep moving along.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re above the timberline at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right, about 12,000 feet the trees won\u2019t grow up there, and it\u2019s just wide open.\u00a0 Big sky, and you can see miles and miles and miles.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There\u2019s a reason why trees don\u2019t grow up there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And that is?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No oxygen, is what we\u2019re talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No oxygen!\u00a0 If there was no oxygen way down there, there\u2019s really no oxygen way up here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That would be good to put in the Pierce Family TV Show.\u00a0 I needed that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you get from 10,000 feet to the top on the second day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We did.\u00a0 Now, the second day we lightened our load.\u00a0 We left the tent and backpacks and everything at camp, and just took daypacks with snacks and water.\u00a0 So, it was better that way.\u00a0 But, you still slow down.\u00a0 When you get to 13,000 you\u2019re just taking baby steps.\u00a0 But, we could see the summit so it kept pushing us on.\u00a0 That was our goal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever climbed a fourteener.\u00a0 I\u2019ve climbed a few mountains, but I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever climbed one.\u00a0 But, I\u2019ve been up above timberline, and it really is amazing how much energy it takes to pick your foot up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve run a few marathons, and mountain climbing is tougher.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It really is and here\u2019s the kicker for me.\u00a0 Where you were, is about halfway up Mount Everest.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right, that does blow my mind.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s no wonder people perish up there.\u00a0 It\u2019s brutal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think I\u2019ve heard 22,000 feet your body starts to die.\u00a0 Cells die, tissues break down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How was the ice cream?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was wonderful.\u00a0 It was the best.\u00a0 Not only is there ice cream, there are cheeseburgers up there.\u00a0 We almost rolled back down to base camp, because we ate, and it was wonderful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Tell us about how you made it to the top.\u00a0 Was there some kind of ceremony, a father-daughter embrace?\u00a0 What did you do as you made it to the top? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We got pretty close and there were some people I could see looking over these rocks.\u00a0 They were not climbers, they were tourists.\u00a0 They were really close to us.\u00a0 I told Chera, \u201cWe are almost there, let\u2019s go.\u201d\u00a0 So we give this one last push.\u00a0 When we get to where these people are, I realize, they\u2019ve walked about 500 yards down from the souvenir shop.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re still not there.\u00a0 We kept having these false summits.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we found the energy and pushed on.\u00a0 The ground began to level out.\u00a0 We got to the top, and we just hugged each other.\u00a0 Then, we grabbed the first person we could find, gave them our camera, and asked, \u201cCould you take our picture?\u201d\u00a0 We just stood there thinking, we did this.\u00a0 This is what it\u2019s all about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let me ask you, because we\u2019ve talked about mountain climbing and the fun that you had, and we\u2019ve laughed about this.\u00a0 But, the real story here is what happened between a daddy and a daughter as you guys connected over a common activity.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 It was relationship.\u00a0 These activities, climbing the mountains, running the marathons, it demanded that we spend a lot of time together.\u00a0 This quantity time slowly turned into quality time.\u00a0 We would train for marathons.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t talked about that yet, but these marathons, you would run for hours.\u00a0 We would take three or four hours, chunks of time, and just run side-by-side.\u00a0 Not fast, we were slow runners.\u00a0 And, we talked about everything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe talked about life, we talked about her school, and we talked about the choices she was going to make about school.\u00a0 We talked about boys.\u00a0 She got so comfortable with me, and understood me so well that one day, she turned to me and said, \u201cDad I have to confess:\u00a0 I hate to run.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cMe too.\u201d\u00a0 Then we just kept running.\u00a0 But we both realized how painful some of the training is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to tell you a quick story.\u00a0 I was speaking at one of our Weekend to Remember\u00ae marriage conferences back a number of months ago, and I had a guy come up to me and he said, \u201cI remember the first time I listened to you guys on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 You were talking about dads dating their daughters.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI thought to myself, \u2018You\u2019re crazy!\u00a0 Dating your daughter.\u00a0 That\u2019s just ridiculous.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cBut, the more I listened the more I thought, \u2018Well, maybe I should try that.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cIt\u2019s made all the difference in the world in the relationship that we have as I\u2019ve invested time with my daughters on things they like to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I\u2019m thinking, Bob, on all those dates I used to take.\u00a0 What a wimp I am because I only took them to the mall, or go to\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There\u2019s an escalator there too wasn\u2019t there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We went to a smorgasbord.\u00a0 There was nothing uphill about it.\u00a0 But, you know what was good, and this is what really the point of this is.\u00a0 As daddies, we really must pursue our daughters.\u00a0 We have to pursue them on their turf.\u00a0 That\u2019s really what that trail represented.\u00a0 That was her turf.\u00a0 And, you joined her in accomplishing an objective.\u00a0 Ultimately became turf around marathons.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, the issue is, you found a way to connect heart to heart with your daughter.\u00a0 I think as fathers, we look at our assignment, and what we have to pass on to our sons and daughters.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have a relationship, you\u2019re not going to be able to make that hand off of truth.\u00a0 It\u2019s why doing things like this\u2014it doesn\u2019t have to be climbing Pike\u2019s Peak\u2014but, find a way to meet your daughter, or your son for that matter, on common ground.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It does demand sacrifice on the part of the dad.\u00a0 I mean, when your son or your daughter pops in and says, \u201cI have a dream,\u201d and you think, either, \u201cBoy, that\u2019s too expensive,\u201d or \u201cI don\u2019t have the energy for it,\u201d or whatever else, that\u2019s a pivotal moment.\u00a0 What we decide as dads in that moment can shape the relationship for the months or the years to come.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s really what\u2019s at the heart of what you\u2019ve written in your book\u00a0 <em>Don\u2019t Let Me Go:<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>What My Daughter was developing her world, I had my world.\u00a0 She could stay busy in her world all the time and I could stay busy in mine, and we could just cross at dinner table or something like that.\u00a0 It was an invitation.\u00a0 And, there was something in me that said, \u201cYou need to do this.\u00a0 Even though it\u2019s hard, go ahead and do it, and see what He also teaches at Taylor University in Fort Wayne, Indiana.\u00a0 So, you commute a couple of times a year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right, I\u2019ve done that a couple of times now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He and his wife live in the middle of Tennessee to be able to teach there.\u00a0 He\u2019s written a book called <em>Don\u2019t Let Me Go<\/em>.\u00a0 I really liked what you\u2019ve written here.\u00a0 Because I read the book that started you out on this journey, <em>Into Thin Air<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>John Krakauer, I\u2019m a fan of his.\u00a0 I love his writing.\u00a0 But I nearly froze to death while reading that book.\u00a0 It\u2019s the story of how several people lost their lives on top of Mount Everest.\u00a0 But that caused you to begin a journey that ultimately ended up with you climbing some mountains.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It did.\u00a0 I was in my office minding my own business when my daughter, who was 15 at the time, came in.\u00a0 She had that book under her arm.\u00a0 I saw it, I saw the title.\u00a0 I\u2019d heard about it, but I hadn\u2019t read it yet.\u00a0 But I knew that something bad happened, and people had died.\u00a0 She came in, and I said, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cDad, can we climb a mountain?\u201d\u00a0 I saw the book and said, \u201cReally, after reading that you still want to do this?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cYes.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was so determined.\u00a0 She had done the research and she said, \u201cYou know, there\u2019s a mountain out west called Pike\u2019s Peak.\u00a0 I read that there\u2019s a trail all the way to the top.\u00a0 At the top is a souvenir shop that serves ice cream.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWell, how hard could that be?\u201d\u00a0 She was so determined, and I knew she had her heart set on it.\u00a0 So, I said, \u201cOK, I will.\u201d And, that was a turning point.\u00a0 We went and got matching backpacks, and I thought \u201cThis is going to be a fun trip.\u201d\u00a0 So we flew out there a couple of months later, caught a cab to the trail head and started up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wait a second, we\u2019ve got to have a little background on your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you just buy backpacks, and say, \u201cLet\u2019s go to the top of the mountain,\u201d?\u00a0 Was there any preparation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Training?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Training?\u00a0 Chera was on the track team. So, she was running, she was training.\u00a0 We had moved into a new house so I was doing some landscaping.\u00a0 She said, \u201cDad, don\u2019t you think you ought to run or train a little bit?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019ve been doing some gardening.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019s going to be good enough.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, pulling those turnips, that will get you ready for climbing at about ten thousand feet.\u00a0 That will get you ready.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did have to apologize later, I said, \u201cYou know what Chera, I think you were right.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think planting shrubbery is the proper training for climbing a mountain.\u00a0 But, we didn\u2019t know what to do.\u00a0 She had a dream, we had an internet map, and we said, \u201cLet\u2019s just go climb this mountain.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go knock this out.\u201d\u00a0 This is what she wants to do.\u00a0 I\u2019ll do this with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think, before we get on the mountain, we have to have a little background on your daughter, and your family.\u00a0 You used to have a show that you performed at your place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We did, the name is no surprise, I don\u2019t that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve got a synonym finder that you could use.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I could have used that, yes.\u00a0 But, we would play this game in the living room that was a mirror on the wall, and she was three or four years old.\u00a0 So, I would hold her on my hip.\u00a0 We would come running onto the screen, which was the mirror.\u00a0 We could see ourselves.\u00a0 I\u2019d say, \u201cWelcome everybody to the Pierce Family TV Show!\u00a0 My name is David.\u201d\u00a0 She\u2019d go, \u201cMy name is Chera!\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019d wave and smile and everything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a talk show, kind of like this.\u00a0 We would interview people.\u00a0 I said, \u201cToday we are going to interview\u2026\u201d and I would think of something, and I thought of, \u201c\u2026the man who lives at the top of the volcano.\u201d\u00a0 She was so tickled with that.\u00a0 She would ask all the questions.\u00a0 She had a spoon for a microphone, and she said, \u201cOK, what do you eat for dinner?\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019d say, \u201cHot beans.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you drink?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cHot chocolate.\u201d\u00a0 Everything was hot, hot, hot.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we would do this, and we\u2019d take a commercial break.\u00a0 I\u2019d go over and straighten out her hair and fix her makeup and everything.\u00a0 Then we\u2019d run back out in front of the mirror.\u00a0 I\u2019d give a little tease.\u00a0 I\u2019d say, \u201cAlright next week, we\u2019re going to interview\u2026\u201d\u00a0 \u201c\u2026the man that lives at the top of the volcano.\u201d\u00a0 She couldn\u2019t get away from that.\u00a0 I think one time we interviewed the man in the hot air balloon, but she asked him, \u201cWhat is the man at the top of the volcano doing right now?\u201d\u00a0 She was obsessed with the man at the top of the volcano.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, as you talked about this idea of climbing the mountain, what did the rest of your family think about it?\u00a0 Did your wife think it was a great idea?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t think she knew the extent of this mountain climbing thing.\u00a0 I had downplayed it a little bit.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s a trail, a walking trail.\u00a0 We don\u2019t need ropes or anything like that.\u201d\u00a0 I talked about the ice cream at the top.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let me just back up.\u00a0 There are a lot of 15-year-old girls who might pop into their dad\u2019s study and say, \u201cI want to climb a mountain.\u201d\u00a0 And Dad will say, \u201cWell, maybe someday we could do that.\u201d\u00a0 And, he\u2019s just waiting for her to leave and then hoping she\u2019ll forget the dream.\u00a0 You really latched onto this and thought, \u201cThis is something significant here.\u201d\u00a0 You didn\u2019t just let it die. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 I did sense that we were at a point here where she was developing her world, I had my world.\u00a0 I sensed that she could stay busy in her world all the time, and I could be busy in mine, and we could just cross paths at the dinner table.\u00a0 She was 15. There was something in me that said, \u201cYou need to do this.\u00a0 Even though it\u2019s hard, go ahead and do it and see what happens.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>OK, so we\u2019re at the base of Pike\u2019s Peak, you actually made this journey on Labor Day 1999.\u00a0 What\u2019s the altitude where the trail starts?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think we started out at about 6700 feet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re going up to 14+ right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>14,110 feet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s just a mile and something up in the sky.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And change, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, as the crow flies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But you weren\u2019t flying the way the crow flies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That would be a turbo-prop crow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, it sounds easy when you say, \u201cOh you start at 6,000 and go up a mile, no big deal.\u201d\u00a0 But, the trail is 13 miles long.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>OK\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, you\u2019re gaining in altitude of a little more than a mile. So, there was a lot of zigzagging on the side of that mountain.\u00a0 Back and forth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How far into the hike before you thought to yourself \u201cGardening was not sufficient to be ready for this adventure.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think it was eight feet, because the way we started.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey told us the trail head is \u201cjust over there.\u201d\u00a0 We were so new at this.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know what a trail head was.\u00a0 I had my backpack on, the man said, \u201cIt\u2019s over there.\u201d\u00a0 We saw a path going through the weeds.\u00a0 I said, \u201cThat must be it.\u201d\u00a0 So we went over there, and it was an eight foot climb, and it leveled off.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChera got up and slipped and I caught her.\u00a0 She got up again and said, \u201cCome on Dad.\u201d\u00a0 So I got a little running start which is not a good idea at 6700 feet.\u00a0 I grabbed a hold of the grass and pulled myself up.\u00a0 We got to the top and I was bent over.\u00a0 I felt like I was dying, and I was wheezing.\u00a0 I said, \u201cMaybe that\u2019s the toughest part of the trail, right there.\u00a0 Maybe this is where everybody dies.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we walk through this little meadow, and we come to a big parking lot.\u00a0 Across the parking lot is a big sign that says, \u201cTrail Head.\u201d\u00a0 And Chera said, \u201cOh there it is Dad!\u201d\u00a0 I was already dying and we hadn\u2019t even started officially.\u00a0 So eight feet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And you realized, I should have done more than gardening on this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I thought, no shrubbery in the world could prepare you for this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, tell us about the first day\u2019s hike.\u00a0 How far did you go, how high were you by the time you finished?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Our goal was to get to the base camp.\u00a0 It\u2019s called \u201cBar Camp.\u201d\u00a0 It was about seven miles up.\u00a0 That was our goal.\u00a0 So we headed out, and we stopped a lot.\u00a0 We had lots of water and we would stop and meet people and talk to people.\u00a0 For the first couple of miles we met this fellow we called \u201cEncyclopedia man.\u201d\u00a0 Chera was making up names for people all the time, and he was Encyclopedia Man because he knew everything about the trail.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did he know about the guy on top of the volcano?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, he didn\u2019t know about him.\u00a0 We did have that over him.\u00a0 But, we would stop.\u00a0 The first time we met him we said, \u201cI wonder how high we are?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou are at 7,102 feet.\u201d\u00a0 And we thought, how do you know that?\u00a0\u00a0 His buddy was with him, and said, \u201cThis guy knows everything about this trail.\u201d\u00a0 So we tagged along with him for a while.\u00a0 Then, finally he peeled off and went back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got to a point just before camp, and we were sitting on this big rock, and these gentlemen are coming down.\u00a0 They said, \u201cOh, you\u2019re sitting on depression rock.\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cWhy do you call it depression rock?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cBecause if you look back there\u2026\u201d He turned around and pointed up.\u00a0 You could see the peak of the mountain.\u00a0 And you can see a little tiny rectangular building.\u00a0 That was the souvenir shop where the ice cream is.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThat\u2019s where you\u2019re going.\u00a0 And it\u2019s so far away it\u2019s really depressing isn\u2019t it?\u201d\u00a0 We were thinking, \u201cOh yes.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve obviously never hiked this trail.\u00a0 Most of us haven\u2019t.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking that it\u2019s like a normal hiking trail except there are parts where the incline is pretty good.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, what makes it difficult, Bob is there are parts of this trail where there is no oxygen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Is that right?\u00a0 You run out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Am I right David or not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes.\u00a0 We lost oxygen a lot.\u00a0 There are parts that are not too bad.\u00a0 Then there are parts where it is mile after mile of \u201cStairmaster,\u201d where one is always stepping up.\u00a0 Of course we had on backpacks\u2014mine was 40 pounds, hers was 30\u2014so that pulled us down.\u00a0 And every step up the air is a little bit thinner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You got to base camp the first night right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We got there right at nightfall.\u00a0 We made it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Was the weather OK?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Until we went to sleep.\u00a0 We had the tent set up; we ate some crunchy stuff that was supposed to be chicken teriyaki.\u00a0 We ate part of it and decided that was enough to keep us alive.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we climbed into our little tent.\u00a0 And, just as we were lying there, ready to go to sleep, it began to rain.\u00a0 It was a two-man tent.\u00a0 So, I crawled out and pulled our backpacks in and just laid them on top of us.\u00a0 So, the first night was miserable.\u00a0 We came out the next morning and the altitude had swelled us up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked and my hands were swollen.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWow, that feels weird.\u201d\u00a0 And Chera looked at me and said, \u201cDad, you don\u2019t even look like yourself.\u201d\u00a0 Her face was all puffy and everything.\u00a0 The first night was miserable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Was there any thought of, \u201cOK we\u2019ve gone to base camp, let\u2019s just call this the adventure and be done with it.\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Chera would not entertain that.\u00a0 We figured, we have the whole weekend, we\u2019ll just take our time.\u00a0 But, we did scrap breakfast.\u00a0 They serve breakfast at base camp for like $5 bucks.\u00a0 So I grabbed $5 bucks and said, \u201cLet\u2019s go get some breakfast.\u201d\u00a0 So, we had pancakes and then headed to the summit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As you headed to the summit on the second day, you encountered a series of steps?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 As you get toward the top, there\u2019s a thing called 16 Golden Stairs.\u00a0 Now, Fred Barr built this trail back in 1918.\u00a0 What he would do is, he would work in the coal mines during the winter time, save his money to buy dynamite and during the summertime he would blow up rocks to make this trail.\u00a0 We get to the 16 Golden Stairs, and sometimes you are just crawling, getting over rocks and through passages.\u00a0 We got the feeling that Fred ran out of money at about this point, because, there were too many rocks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No dynamite huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, he ran out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It wouldn\u2019t go off up there, not enough oxygen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Maybe that was it.\u00a0 The rocks were still there Fred.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Here is one of my great fears, my great fear is to be climbing a mountain like this and slip and fall.\u00a0 Like a 5,000 foot free fall.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We had moments.\u00a0 There are times when I was there I thought, \u201cDid OSHA inspect this trail?\u00a0 Because this is dangerous.\u201d\u00a0 There are some places that are pretty sheer, and you don\u2019t want to get too close.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, I\u2019m up here with my daughter, and this is a little spooky, so keep moving along, keep moving along.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re above the timberline at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right, about 12,000 feet the trees won\u2019t grow up there, and it\u2019s just wide open.\u00a0 Big sky, and you can see miles and miles and miles.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There\u2019s a reason why trees don\u2019t grow up there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And that is?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No oxygen, is what we\u2019re talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No oxygen!\u00a0 If there was no oxygen way down there, there\u2019s really no oxygen way up here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That would be good to put in the Pierce Family TV Show.\u00a0 I needed that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you get from 10,000 feet to the top on the second day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We did.\u00a0 Now, the second day we lightened our load.\u00a0 We left the tent and backpacks and everything at camp, and just took daypacks with snacks and water.\u00a0 So, it was better that way.\u00a0 But, you still slow down.\u00a0 When you get to 13,000 you\u2019re just taking baby steps.\u00a0 But, we could see the summit so it kept pushing us on.\u00a0 That was our goal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever climbed a fourteener.\u00a0 I\u2019ve climbed a few mountains, but I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever climbed one.\u00a0 But, I\u2019ve been up above timberline, and it really is amazing how much energy it takes to pick your foot up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve run a few marathons, and mountain climbing is tougher.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It really is and here\u2019s the kicker for me.\u00a0 Where you were, is about halfway up Mount Everest.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right, that does blow my mind.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s no wonder people perish up there.\u00a0 It\u2019s brutal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think I\u2019ve heard 22,000 feet your body starts to die.\u00a0 Cells die, tissues break down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How was the ice cream?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was wonderful.\u00a0 It was the best.\u00a0 Not only is there ice cream, there are cheeseburgers up there.\u00a0 We almost rolled back down to base camp, because we ate, and it was wonderful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Tell us about how you made it to the top.\u00a0 Was there some kind of ceremony, a father-daughter embrace?\u00a0 What did you do as you made it to the top? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We got pretty close and there were some people I could see looking over these rocks.\u00a0 They were not climbers, they were tourists.\u00a0 They were really close to us.\u00a0 I told Chera, \u201cWe are almost there, let\u2019s go.\u201d\u00a0 So we give this one last push.\u00a0 When we get to where these people are, I realize, they\u2019ve walked about 500 yards down from the souvenir shop.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re still not there.\u00a0 We kept having these false summits.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we found the energy and pushed on.\u00a0 The ground began to level out.\u00a0 We got to the top, and we just hugged each other.\u00a0 Then, we grabbed the first person we could find, gave them our camera, and asked, \u201cCould you take our picture?\u201d\u00a0 We just stood there thinking, we did this.\u00a0 This is what it\u2019s all about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let me ask you, because we\u2019ve talked about mountain climbing and the fun that you had, and we\u2019ve laughed about this.\u00a0 But, the real story here is what happened between a daddy and a daughter as you guys connected over a common activity.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 It was relationship.\u00a0 These activities, climbing the mountains, running the marathons, it demanded that we spend a lot of time together.\u00a0 This quantity time slowly turned into quality time.\u00a0 We would train for marathons.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t talked about that yet, but these marathons, you would run for hours.\u00a0 We would take three or four hours, chunks of time, and just run side-by-side.\u00a0 Not fast, we were slow runners.\u00a0 And, we talked about everything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe talked about life, we talked about her school, and we talked about the choices she was going to make about school.\u00a0 We talked about boys.\u00a0 She got so comfortable with me, and understood me so well that one day, she turned to me and said, \u201cDad I have to confess:\u00a0 I hate to run.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cMe too.\u201d\u00a0 Then we just kept running.\u00a0 But we both realized how painful some of the training is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to tell you a quick story.\u00a0 I was speaking at one of our Weekend to Remember\u00ae marriage conferences back a number of months ago, and I had a guy come up to me and he said, \u201cI remember the first time I listened to you guys on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 You were talking about dads dating their daughters.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI thought to myself, \u2018You\u2019re crazy!\u00a0 Dating your daughter.\u00a0 That\u2019s just ridiculous.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cBut, the more I listened the more I thought, \u2018Well, maybe I should try that.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cIt\u2019s made all the difference in the world in the relationship that we have as I\u2019ve invested time with my daughters on things they like to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I\u2019m thinking, Bob, on all those dates I used to take.\u00a0 What a wimp I am because I only took them to the mall, or go to\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There\u2019s an escalator there too wasn\u2019t there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We went to a smorgasbord.\u00a0 There was nothing uphill about it.\u00a0 But, you know what was good, and this is what really the point of this is.\u00a0 As daddies, we really must pursue our daughters.\u00a0 We have to pursue them on their turf.\u00a0 That\u2019s really what that trail represented.\u00a0 That was her turf.\u00a0 And, you joined her in accomplishing an objective.\u00a0 Ultimately became turf around marathons.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, the issue is, you found a way to connect heart to heart with your daughter.\u00a0 I think as fathers, we look at our assignment, and what we have to pass on to our sons and daughters.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have a relationship, you\u2019re not going to be able to make that hand off of truth.\u00a0 It\u2019s why doing things like this\u2014it doesn\u2019t have to be climbing Pike\u2019s Peak\u2014but, find a way to meet your daughter, or your son for that matter, on common ground.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It does demand sacrifice on the part of the dad.\u00a0 I mean, when your son or your daughter pops in and says, \u201cI have a dream,\u201d and you think, either, \u201cBoy, that\u2019s too expensive,\u201d or \u201cI don\u2019t have the energy for it,\u201d or whatever else, that\u2019s a pivotal moment.\u00a0 What we decide as dads in that moment can shape the relationship for the months or the years to come.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s really what\u2019s at the heart of what you\u2019ve written in your book\u00a0 <em>Don\u2019t Let Me Go:<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>What My Daughter
