Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Todd Smith and the beautiful red-headed girl, Angie are here with us today to talk about how (Bob makes sound of car screeching to a halt), became \u201cVroom!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I remember when a friend of mine said \u201cHave you gone to Angie Smith\u2019s blog, and have you heard their story?\u201d\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t.\u00a0 But when I did, I thought to myself, \u201cDennis is going to want to read this, to see this\u2026\u00a0 He\u2019s going to want to meet this couple.\u201d\u00a0 Because, there are some cross-currents between what Angie and Todd have lived through, and what your family has been through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, our daughter Rebecca, more than a couple of years ago gave birth to a little girl who lived seven days, then miscarried again in the following twelve months.\u00a0 So she lost two babies in less than a year then, gave birth to twins.\u00a0 Something similar has occurred to both Todd and Angie Smith, and they join us on the Broadcast.\u00a0 Angie, Todd, welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie &amp; Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Todd is a founding member of <em>Selah<\/em> (\u201cSAY-la\u201d), not to be confused with (\u201cSEE-la\u201d), I was corrected before we even had a chance to flood that on the air. You\u2019ve been singing for 13 years as a group.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I\u2019ve been singing since I was three years old.\u00a0 My dad was a music pastor and then a missionary in Africa, so we used to go back to all the churches on furlough and the whole family sings.\u00a0 So, basically we\u2019ve been doing that my whole life.\u00a0 But, as a group we\u2019ve been together for 13 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You look a lot older than 16 if you started when you were three.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, you know.\u00a0 It\u2019s that Oil of Olay.\u00a0 I am a little bit older, I\u2019m almost 40 now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You didn\u2019t start when you were three, that\u2019s the point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The band didn\u2019t start when you were three.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Angie, is an author, she is a blogger, and that\u2019s really, I think, how we came across your story.\u00a0 She\u2019s a speaker and, obviously married to Todd.\u00a0 You guys have soon to have five daughters.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re pregnant right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Can you tell?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Can you tell?\u00a0 Every night when you go to bed you can tell.\u00a0 Can\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Angie has written a book called <em>I Will Carry You<\/em>, and we\u2019re going to get to that story in just a moment.\u00a0 But, before we get to that, she shared with Bob and me something of her experience with <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> as a student.\u00a0 Share that with our audience.\u00a0 I think they\u2019re going to find that very interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I was just so honored.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t find out till yesterday that I would actually get to meet you.\u00a0 It was such a full-circle moment for me with the Lord.\u00a0 About 11, maybe even 12 years ago I was a graduate student at Vanderbilt University studying developmental psychology.\u00a0 I was not a believer.\u00a0 I was not in a good Christian environment.\u00a0 I was actually with someone who was very abusive.\u00a0 It was just a very, very hard time in my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod had it planned that it just so happened when I was on my way to Vanderbilt, or on my way home, I would be flipping channels and I would hear your show, and I would always stop and listen.\u00a0 It just brought me such peace, but it felt like \u201cThis can\u2019t be real.\u00a0 This sounds like a fairy tale.\u00a0 It\u2019s just so soothing.\u201d\u00a0 But, I really feel like God used that and a few other things that, now when I look back, I just think, it was no coincidence that He had that time set aside for me to start learning about Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, I have to assume that you met Jesus and surrendered to Him before you met Todd and surrendered to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I didn\u2019t, actually.\u00a0 It was a very interesting story.\u00a0 When I was in graduate school I got a phone call from my father and he said \u201cI need you to come home.\u00a0 I need to talk to you about some things.\u201d\u00a0 So I drove to Cincinnati.\u00a0 He sat me down and explained that he had been diagnosed with a very serious form of cancer.\u00a0 At that point it looked like they were giving him an estimate of three months to live.\u00a0 He wanted to show me how to handle the bank accounts, how to take care of my mother\u2014I\u2019m the eldest, I have one younger sister.\u00a0 It was something that I\u2019m very much a daddy\u2019s girl.\u00a0 It was my world completely turned upside-down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t advise doing this unless you expect to lose, but I made a bet with God.\u00a0 I basically said, if You will heal my father, I will find out about You.\u00a0 I will try to figure out who You are.\u00a0 On Christmas Eve we got a phone call from the doctors saying, \u201cWe have no medical way to explain this, but we can\u2019t find the cancer anywhere in your body.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh my goodness!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, I went back to graduate school, and because my father\u2019s side of the family\u2019s heritage is Catholic, I said, \u201cWell, that\u2019s my dad\u2019s church, that\u2019s the only thing I know anything about, so I went through RCIA, which is the Catholic rite as an adult to become Catholic.\u00a0 I went through it for a year and became confirmed in the Catholic church.\u00a0 I just felt like that was part of my journey the way everything unfolded.\u00a0 I needed to have that connection with my father\u2019s side of the family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think that year, too was a really safe period for you to question who God was, and really investigate.\u00a0 I think a lot of times, in Protestant churches, when you do have a message of salvation\u2014we were talking about this a little earlier\u2014But there can be a quick conversion to faith and believing in Christ, but people don\u2019t necessarily know what they believe.\u00a0 So, for her it was the opposite, where there was a lot of questioning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Do you feel like you became a Christian then in that year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I believe that He was wooing me during that year, but I don\u2019t believe that I became a believer until later than that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How did that happen?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Basically, there was one night I was heading to\u2014it was ironic because I wasn\u2019t a believer\u2014I started doing a Beth Moore Bible study called <em>Breaking Free<\/em>.\u00a0 One night on the way to church, I was sitting with my best friend Audra.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been best friends since 1996, almost 14 years.\u00a0 We were not believers, now are both believers, but have walked through that together.\u00a0 She had already accepted the Lord at that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just looked at her and started crying. I said, \u201cAudra, I keep hearing people talk about accepting the Lord, and I feel like I\u2019ve talked to him, but I don\u2019t hear anything back.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if I\u2019m in.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ve done it right.\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand the process of it.\u201d\u00a0 She sat with me in the car, held my hand and just talked me through it.\u00a0 We went to the Bible study.\u00a0 I got home, it was pouring rain, and I just sat in my car and cried my eyes out.\u00a0 I feel like that was the moment where I said, \u201cLord I\u2019m yours, I don\u2019t really know if I\u2019m doing this right\u2026\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou sort of expect to have\u2026 you hear about this amazing moment where you accept the Lord.\u00a0 I think that for some people, you are expecting angels to start singing, and you\u2019re expecting some definitive feeling of, \u201cI\u2019ve done it.\u201d\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t say that, but I had a total peace in my heart that I felt; like, I had united with my Savior in this way that I hadn\u2019t done till this point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, I\u2019m listening and watching your face.\u00a0 It was a moment of surrender to the claims of Christ that He had on your life.\u00a0 I think too often today in our culture, there\u2019s more of an equation that people kind of figure out in their mind.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to \u201caccept the Lord,\u201d but it\u2019s really not an issue of the will, and it doesn\u2019t demonstrate faith.\u00a0 I think to truly become a follower of Christ, whether it comes to a point in time, or over a period of time, there has to be a place where you finally say, \u201cI surrender.\u00a0 I\u2019m yours.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Todd, let me ask you how you intersected with Angie, and with her story.\u00a0 Where was she on her journey when you met her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She had gone through confirmation classes and had been confirmed in the Catholic church.\u00a0 Then, my sister Nicole had gone on the road touring her solo project. So, me and Alan, who is in the group, and our producer, Jason, the three of us were asked to lead worship at the First Baptist in Nashville.\u00a0 We\u2019d done that several times.\u00a0 I remember this really cute, beautiful red-head walked in.\u00a0\u00a0 She kind of popped her head in.\u00a0 And I thought, \u201cWow, she\u2019s cute.\u201d\u00a0 But I needed to be spiritual, and pretend I was above everything.\u00a0 So the next day after we sang, she asked me out on a walk.\u00a0 She was like \u201cHey!\u201d\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She asked you out on a date?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I knew he was going to go there.\u00a0 I was just waiting.\u00a0 He always has to add that part to the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, is it true?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, is it true?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It actually is.\u00a0 I was so fascinated.\u00a0 I just said to him after one of the meetings.\u00a0 \u201cCould we just go for a walk?\u00a0 Can I ask you some questions about your upbringing?\u201d\u00a0 Really, Todd does a great job of telling his story from stage that makes you want to know more about his spiritual life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cWant to go for a walk?\u201d\u00a0 You wanted to down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and the thing is, the day before we\u2019d gone to play flag football.\u00a0 And she just said, \u201cYes, I\u2019m a Catholic girl.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m a Baptist boy, so I was like, (makes sound of car screeching to a halt.)\u00a0 \u201cOh, OK.\u00a0 It was nice meeting you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just started talking.\u00a0 The great thing was, we both lived in Nashville.\u00a0 So there were times when you might go and do a concert and meet someone and really connect with them.\u00a0 But it\u2019s usually like, \u201cOK, well I\u2019ll see you in a year.\u201d\u00a0 Whereas, this was something where we could get to know each other.\u00a0 As we did, I was very cautious.\u00a0 Just, because I knew there were theological differences.\u00a0 So, we met in October and started dating probably in November.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Had you made a commitment to Christ by then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, it wasn\u2019t till January of that year.\u00a0 I felt like, if you had asked me at the time, I probably would have answered in a way that would make you think that I had.\u00a0 I felt like I had.\u00a0 On paper, everything I would say.\u00a0 But, there hadn\u2019t been that moment of surrender you were just talking about.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t till January of that year that I had a definitive moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Todd, how did the red-head change in January, after she made her commitment to Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve never seen anybody grow as quickly as Angie has.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He means spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Spiritually\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As opposed to\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He almost forgot I\u2019m seven months pregnant.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That never crossed my mind, baby.\u00a0 I mean when you look over a ten-year period. We\u2019ve known each other nine and a half years, it\u2019s just amazing.\u00a0 There were times very early on after she gave her life to the Lord where she would talk about conversations that she had with God in the car.\u00a0 They were just so real.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been saved since I was five-years-old and I grew up in a missionary family.\u00a0 I\u2019m a preacher\u2019s kid, a missionary kid, and I thought, \u201cI\u2019ve never experienced that kind of realness that you\u2019re experiencing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo there was such a depth.\u00a0 There were some times where, when we got engaged, I got cold feet about things, and even though internally she was wondering what was going to happen, she was very at peace.\u00a0 She\u2019d say, \u201cI know that we\u2019re supposed to be married.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to marry you.\u201d\u00a0 That really set me at ease.\u00a0 So, there were many things where\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>OK, but you really loved me too right?\u00a0 (All laugh)\u00a0 Every story you tell\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She said, \u201cLet\u2019s go for a walk,\u201d she said, \u201cI know I\u2019m going to marry you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I know!\u00a0 I scored the first touchdown in that flag football game that you failed to mention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did.\u00a0 I thought I did.\u00a0 I was just amazed by who she was.\u00a0 She was just incredibly brilliant and intelligent, and so loving.\u00a0 She was the kind of person where, she would go into a room and she just brightens it up.\u00a0 She loves people.\u00a0 No, I fell in love with her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Ok, you redeemed yourself a little.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m redeeming myself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, we have to finish this love story quickly here.\u00a0 So, how did she propose to you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(All laugh)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I actually did do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You manned up, way to go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Way to go!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I surprised her.\u00a0 There was a ring that she really wanted.\u00a0 I told her \u201cI can\u2019t.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry honey, and I can\u2019t afford that.\u201d\u00a0 I made a deal with the jeweler to hide everything and pretend.\u00a0 So the day we got engaged, I presented that ring to her.\u00a0 No, so I actually did ask her myself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Good for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We were married\u2014it was very quick.\u00a0 We were married in August of 2001.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know what, I\u2019d just say to those who are engaged and know it\u2019s right, don\u2019t drag it out.\u00a0 Because all you\u2019re doing is borrowing trouble if you drag it out.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But, I want to make sure, if we\u2019re talking to single people who are contemplating engagement or who are engaged.\u00a0 You can really save yourself a lot of heartache and pain, especially if you have this cold feet thing that was going on in this relationship.\u00a0 If you come to a Weekend to Remember\u00ae and go through the engaged track, you can begin to build your house on the rock.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to fast forward here because I know the story.\u00a0 How long before you found out you were pregnant Angie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>With my first child?\u00a0 We actually were married in August, and we lost a baby that winter.\u00a0 We weren\u2019t expecting to be pregnant, and got pregnant again quickly after that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So you didn\u2019t actually know you were pregnant the first time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did.\u00a0 I knew for a few weeks before we lost the baby.\u00a0 We had talked about waiting a little while.\u00a0 Of course, as humans we have all these great detailed highlighted and marked plans for our lives and God just comes into the picture and makes it so much more beautiful.\u00a0 But, after we lost that baby, I just felt this yearning to have a child.\u00a0 So, we got pregnant pretty quickly after that, went in for the first ultra sound and found out that we were having twins.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the pregnancy was a little bit of a surprise, and the twins were definitely a surprise.\u00a0 We had no idea.\u00a0 We don\u2019t have twins in our family.\u00a0 So, we had two baby girls, after a pretty traumatic pregnancy.\u00a0 They are miracles, Ellie and Abby who are now seven.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot that long after that we got pregnant with Sara Kate, who is now four.\u00a0 Because I had so many complications in my pregnancy with the twins I like to joke that she was my easiest until she was born.\u00a0 (All laugh.)\u00a0 She is a pistol.\u00a0 She keeps us on our toes.\u00a0 Then, we would have had Audrey.\u00a0 Audrey would be two this coming April, and we\u2019re expecting again in June now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You actually got pregnant with Audrey when Kate about two years old herself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There was something even from the beginning of that pregnancy that signaled to you maybe something is just not right.\u00a0 What was that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I feel like it was the Holy Spirit preparing me.\u00a0 I was, very, very early on, not more than seven or eight weeks.\u00a0\u00a0 I went in for my first appointment.\u00a0 From the very beginning I just said, \u201cI don\u2019t have peace.\u00a0 I feel like something is going on.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen as it progressed, I still continued to feel like\u2014I would say \u201cI don\u2019t feel like I\u2019m gaining weight like I normally do.\u201d\u00a0 They would do all the standard tests and just say, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing that\u2019s significantly off.\u201d\u00a0 But my intuition during that time was\u2026\u00a0 And, it was totally different from anything I had ever felt in my other pregnancies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I wanted to ask you about that.\u00a0 Because, we have five children and I know in Mary Ann\u2019s pregnancies, there was always a season in each of those pregnancies where she would start to wonder.\u00a0 \u201cI haven\u2019t felt the baby kick for a while.\u201d Or, there\u2019d just be this momentary anxiety \u201cIs everything OK?\u201d\u00a0 What you felt during Audrey\u2019s pregnancy was different than what you\u2019d felt in the other pregnancies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was.\u00a0 I think that anxiety\u2014it\u2019s hard to ever be doing something so miraculous and not wonder what\u2019s going on in the depths that you can\u2019t see.\u00a0 But this was a weight that was just a part of the pregnancy that I just was so unsettled about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Obviously the doctors are telling you nothing is wrong, so there\u2019s nothing to confirm this restlessness in your heart.\u00a0 But there was, maybe a spiritual foreshadowing.\u00a0 The Holy Spirit was just preparing you for what was to come.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>A couple of days ago Barbara and I were at a wedding.\u00a0 You watch those two young people stand before each other. I have to think, Angie, you and Todd have to reflect back on those days.\u00a0 I was sitting out in the audience with Barbara and I was thinking, \u201cYou two have no idea what\u2019s in front of you.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not that God is a bad God or one who wants to punish His children, but He will allow that young couple, and he allowed you all to go through some very deep dark valleys.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking back, Angie to your decision to surrender to Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sure you\u2019ve thought about it.\u00a0 What would have happened if you had married Todd and not had a relationship with Christ\u2014the ability to believe in His word?\u00a0 Because, it was Christ who made this statement in John 16:20:\u00a0 Jesus says, \u201cTruly, truly I say to you, you will weep and lament.\u00a0 But the world will rejoice.\u00a0 You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s really only one who is able to turn sorrow into joy.\u00a0 At least, as I\u2019ve looked around in all of life, I don\u2019t know of another savior who offers the ability to take tremendous hurt, grief, loss which you experienced\u2014we\u2019ll hear more of that story later\u2014and replace it, and turn it into something where you really can smile.\u00a0 Because right now, Angie is smiling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, as Jesus was speaking those words, He was preparing His disciples for His own resurrection\u2014the sorrow that would come at His crucifixion, and the joy that they would experience in His resurrection.\u00a0 Really our own hope, our own joy comes for that same reason.\u00a0 We have a hope today because of what was accomplished at the cross and at the empty tomb.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe grief that you guys experienced as you walked this path; if there\u2019s no God, and no resurrection, then where is the hope?\u00a0 Where does your hope come from?\u00a0 Where does any sense of meaning or purpose come from?\u00a0 But, the fact that there is a God and He\u2019s revealed himself.\u00a0 And, not only revealed Himself, but demonstrated His power in His resurrection gives us strength for today, and a bright hope for tomorrow.\u00a0 That\u2019s a great song lyric, you guys might want to think of that for the next album you do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have copies of the book that Angie has written called <em>I Will Carry You: The Sacred Dance of Grief and Joy<\/em> that tells the story of your pregnancy with your daughter Audrey, and how God walked with you on a very difficult journey.\u00a0 You can go to FamilyLifeToday.com for more information about Angie\u2019s book.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain it\u2019s called <em>I Will Carry You<\/em>, and of course it brings to mind the book that your wife Barbara and your daughter Rebecca wrote together called <em>A Symphony in the Dark<\/em>, that tells the story of your granddaughter Molly who lived for seven days before she died.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain go to FamilyLifeToday.com for more information about these resources. Smith, who sings with the music group <em>Selah<\/em>, remembers the day that he was preparing to lead worship at a church in his home town.\u00a0 When, all of sudden, he found himself\u2014well, shall we say\u2014distracted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I remember this really cute beautiful red-head walked in.\u00a0 She kind of popped her head in, and I was like, \u201cWow, she\u2019s cute.\u201d\u00a0 But, I needed to be spiritual and pretend that I was above everything.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI\u2019m a Catholic girl.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m a Baptist boy, so I was like (Todd makes the sound of car screeching to a halt) \u201cOh!\u00a0 OK, it was nice meeting you...\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Todd Smith and the beautiful red-headed girl, Angie are here with us today to talk about how (Bob makes sound of car screeching to a halt), became \u201cVroom!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I remember when a friend of mine said \u201cHave you gone to Angie Smith\u2019s blog, and have you heard their story?\u201d\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t.\u00a0 But when I did, I thought to myself, \u201cDennis is going to want to read this, to see this\u2026\u00a0 He\u2019s going to want to meet this couple.\u201d\u00a0 Because, there are some cross-currents between what Angie and Todd have lived through, and what your family has been through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, our daughter Rebecca, more than a couple of years ago gave birth to a little girl who lived seven days, then miscarried again in the following twelve months.\u00a0 So she lost two babies in less than a year then, gave birth to twins.\u00a0 Something similar has occurred to both Todd and Angie Smith, and they join us on the Broadcast.\u00a0 Angie, Todd, welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie &amp; Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Todd is a founding member of <em>Selah<\/em> (\u201cSAY-la\u201d), not to be confused with (\u201cSEE-la\u201d), I was corrected before we even had a chance to flood that on the air. You\u2019ve been singing for 13 years as a group.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I\u2019ve been singing since I was three years old.\u00a0 My dad was a music pastor and then a missionary in Africa, so we used to go back to all the churches on furlough and the whole family sings.\u00a0 So, basically we\u2019ve been doing that my whole life.\u00a0 But, as a group we\u2019ve been together for 13 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You look a lot older than 16 if you started when you were three.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, you know.\u00a0 It\u2019s that Oil of Olay.\u00a0 I am a little bit older, I\u2019m almost 40 now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You didn\u2019t start when you were three, that\u2019s the point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The band didn\u2019t start when you were three.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Angie, is an author, she is a blogger, and that\u2019s really, I think, how we came across your story.\u00a0 She\u2019s a speaker and, obviously married to Todd.\u00a0 You guys have soon to have five daughters.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re pregnant right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Can you tell?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Can you tell?\u00a0 Every night when you go to bed you can tell.\u00a0 Can\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Angie has written a book called <em>I Will Carry You<\/em>, and we\u2019re going to get to that story in just a moment.\u00a0 But, before we get to that, she shared with Bob and me something of her experience with <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> as a student.\u00a0 Share that with our audience.\u00a0 I think they\u2019re going to find that very interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I was just so honored.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t find out till yesterday that I would actually get to meet you.\u00a0 It was such a full-circle moment for me with the Lord.\u00a0 About 11, maybe even 12 years ago I was a graduate student at Vanderbilt University studying developmental psychology.\u00a0 I was not a believer.\u00a0 I was not in a good Christian environment.\u00a0 I was actually with someone who was very abusive.\u00a0 It was just a very, very hard time in my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod had it planned that it just so happened when I was on my way to Vanderbilt, or on my way home, I would be flipping channels and I would hear your show, and I would always stop and listen.\u00a0 It just brought me such peace, but it felt like \u201cThis can\u2019t be real.\u00a0 This sounds like a fairy tale.\u00a0 It\u2019s just so soothing.\u201d\u00a0 But, I really feel like God used that and a few other things that, now when I look back, I just think, it was no coincidence that He had that time set aside for me to start learning about Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, I have to assume that you met Jesus and surrendered to Him before you met Todd and surrendered to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I didn\u2019t, actually.\u00a0 It was a very interesting story.\u00a0 When I was in graduate school I got a phone call from my father and he said \u201cI need you to come home.\u00a0 I need to talk to you about some things.\u201d\u00a0 So I drove to Cincinnati.\u00a0 He sat me down and explained that he had been diagnosed with a very serious form of cancer.\u00a0 At that point it looked like they were giving him an estimate of three months to live.\u00a0 He wanted to show me how to handle the bank accounts, how to take care of my mother\u2014I\u2019m the eldest, I have one younger sister.\u00a0 It was something that I\u2019m very much a daddy\u2019s girl.\u00a0 It was my world completely turned upside-down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t advise doing this unless you expect to lose, but I made a bet with God.\u00a0 I basically said, if You will heal my father, I will find out about You.\u00a0 I will try to figure out who You are.\u00a0 On Christmas Eve we got a phone call from the doctors saying, \u201cWe have no medical way to explain this, but we can\u2019t find the cancer anywhere in your body.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh my goodness!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, I went back to graduate school, and because my father\u2019s side of the family\u2019s heritage is Catholic, I said, \u201cWell, that\u2019s my dad\u2019s church, that\u2019s the only thing I know anything about, so I went through RCIA, which is the Catholic rite as an adult to become Catholic.\u00a0 I went through it for a year and became confirmed in the Catholic church.\u00a0 I just felt like that was part of my journey the way everything unfolded.\u00a0 I needed to have that connection with my father\u2019s side of the family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think that year, too was a really safe period for you to question who God was, and really investigate.\u00a0 I think a lot of times, in Protestant churches, when you do have a message of salvation\u2014we were talking about this a little earlier\u2014But there can be a quick conversion to faith and believing in Christ, but people don\u2019t necessarily know what they believe.\u00a0 So, for her it was the opposite, where there was a lot of questioning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Do you feel like you became a Christian then in that year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I believe that He was wooing me during that year, but I don\u2019t believe that I became a believer until later than that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How did that happen?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Basically, there was one night I was heading to\u2014it was ironic because I wasn\u2019t a believer\u2014I started doing a Beth Moore Bible study called <em>Breaking Free<\/em>.\u00a0 One night on the way to church, I was sitting with my best friend Audra.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been best friends since 1996, almost 14 years.\u00a0 We were not believers, now are both believers, but have walked through that together.\u00a0 She had already accepted the Lord at that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just looked at her and started crying. I said, \u201cAudra, I keep hearing people talk about accepting the Lord, and I feel like I\u2019ve talked to him, but I don\u2019t hear anything back.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if I\u2019m in.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ve done it right.\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand the process of it.\u201d\u00a0 She sat with me in the car, held my hand and just talked me through it.\u00a0 We went to the Bible study.\u00a0 I got home, it was pouring rain, and I just sat in my car and cried my eyes out.\u00a0 I feel like that was the moment where I said, \u201cLord I\u2019m yours, I don\u2019t really know if I\u2019m doing this right\u2026\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou sort of expect to have\u2026 you hear about this amazing moment where you accept the Lord.\u00a0 I think that for some people, you are expecting angels to start singing, and you\u2019re expecting some definitive feeling of, \u201cI\u2019ve done it.\u201d\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t say that, but I had a total peace in my heart that I felt; like, I had united with my Savior in this way that I hadn\u2019t done till this point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, I\u2019m listening and watching your face.\u00a0 It was a moment of surrender to the claims of Christ that He had on your life.\u00a0 I think too often today in our culture, there\u2019s more of an equation that people kind of figure out in their mind.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to \u201caccept the Lord,\u201d but it\u2019s really not an issue of the will, and it doesn\u2019t demonstrate faith.\u00a0 I think to truly become a follower of Christ, whether it comes to a point in time, or over a period of time, there has to be a place where you finally say, \u201cI surrender.\u00a0 I\u2019m yours.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Todd, let me ask you how you intersected with Angie, and with her story.\u00a0 Where was she on her journey when you met her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She had gone through confirmation classes and had been confirmed in the Catholic church.\u00a0 Then, my sister Nicole had gone on the road touring her solo project. So, me and Alan, who is in the group, and our producer, Jason, the three of us were asked to lead worship at the First Baptist in Nashville.\u00a0 We\u2019d done that several times.\u00a0 I remember this really cute, beautiful red-head walked in.\u00a0\u00a0 She kind of popped her head in.\u00a0 And I thought, \u201cWow, she\u2019s cute.\u201d\u00a0 But I needed to be spiritual, and pretend I was above everything.\u00a0 So the next day after we sang, she asked me out on a walk.\u00a0 She was like \u201cHey!\u201d\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She asked you out on a date?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I knew he was going to go there.\u00a0 I was just waiting.\u00a0 He always has to add that part to the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, is it true?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, is it true?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It actually is.\u00a0 I was so fascinated.\u00a0 I just said to him after one of the meetings.\u00a0 \u201cCould we just go for a walk?\u00a0 Can I ask you some questions about your upbringing?\u201d\u00a0 Really, Todd does a great job of telling his story from stage that makes you want to know more about his spiritual life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cWant to go for a walk?\u201d\u00a0 You wanted to take a walk with him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s called missionary dating.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I hope you\u2019ve toned that down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and the thing is, the day before we\u2019d gone to play flag football.\u00a0 And she just said, \u201cYes, I\u2019m a Catholic girl.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m a Baptist boy, so I was like, (makes sound of car screeching to a halt.)\u00a0 \u201cOh, OK.\u00a0 It was nice meeting you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just started talking.\u00a0 The great thing was, we both lived in Nashville.\u00a0 So there were times when you might go and do a concert and meet someone and really connect with them.\u00a0 But it\u2019s usually like, \u201cOK, well I\u2019ll see you in a year.\u201d\u00a0 Whereas, this was something where we could get to know each other.\u00a0 As we did, I was very cautious.\u00a0 Just, because I knew there were theological differences.\u00a0 So, we met in October and started dating probably in November.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Had you made a commitment to Christ by then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, it wasn\u2019t till January of that year.\u00a0 I felt like, if you had asked me at the time, I probably would have answered in a way that would make you think that I had.\u00a0 I felt like I had.\u00a0 On paper, everything I would say.\u00a0 But, there hadn\u2019t been that moment of surrender you were just talking about.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t till January of that year that I had a definitive moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Todd, how did the red-head change in January, after she made her commitment to Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve never seen anybody grow as quickly as Angie has.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He means spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Spiritually\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As opposed to\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He almost forgot I\u2019m seven months pregnant.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That never crossed my mind, baby.\u00a0 I mean when you look over a ten-year period. We\u2019ve known each other nine and a half years, it\u2019s just amazing.\u00a0 There were times very early on after she gave her life to the Lord where she would talk about conversations that she had with God in the car.\u00a0 They were just so real.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been saved since I was five-years-old and I grew up in a missionary family.\u00a0 I\u2019m a preacher\u2019s kid, a missionary kid, and I thought, \u201cI\u2019ve never experienced that kind of realness that you\u2019re experiencing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo there was such a depth.\u00a0 There were some times where, when we got engaged, I got cold feet about things, and even though internally she was wondering what was going to happen, she was very at peace.\u00a0 She\u2019d say, \u201cI know that we\u2019re supposed to be married.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to marry you.\u201d\u00a0 That really set me at ease.\u00a0 So, there were many things where\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>OK, but you really loved me too right?\u00a0 (All laugh)\u00a0 Every story you tell\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She said, \u201cLet\u2019s go for a walk,\u201d she said, \u201cI know I\u2019m going to marry you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I know!\u00a0 I scored the first touchdown in that flag football game that you failed to mention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did.\u00a0 I thought I did.\u00a0 I was just amazed by who she was.\u00a0 She was just incredibly brilliant and intelligent, and so loving.\u00a0 She was the kind of person where, she would go into a room and she just brightens it up.\u00a0 She loves people.\u00a0 No, I fell in love with her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Ok, you redeemed yourself a little.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m redeeming here.\u00a0 So, how did she propose to you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(All go!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I surprised her.\u00a0 There was a ring that she really wanted.\u00a0 I told her \u201cI can\u2019t.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry honey, and I can\u2019t afford that.\u201d\u00a0 I made a deal with the jeweler to hide everything and pretend.\u00a0 So the day we got engaged, I presented that ring to her.\u00a0 No, so I actually did ask her myself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Good for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We were married\u2014it was very quick.\u00a0 We were married in August of 2001.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know what, I\u2019d just say to those who are engaged and know it\u2019s right, don\u2019t drag it out.\u00a0 Because all you\u2019re doing is borrowing trouble if you drag it out.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But, I want to make sure, if we\u2019re talking to single people who are contemplating engagement or who are engaged.\u00a0 You can really save yourself a lot of heartache and pain, especially if you have this cold feet thing that was going on in this relationship.\u00a0 If you come to a Weekend to Remember\u00ae and go through the engaged track, you can begin to build your house on the rock.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to fast forward here because I know the story.\u00a0 How long before you found out you were pregnant Angie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>With my first child?\u00a0 We actually were married in August, and we lost a baby that winter.\u00a0 We weren\u2019t expecting to be pregnant, and got pregnant again quickly after that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So you didn\u2019t actually know you were pregnant the first time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did.\u00a0 I knew for a few weeks before we lost the baby.\u00a0 We had talked about waiting a little while.\u00a0 Of course, as humans we have all these great detailed highlighted and marked plans for our lives and God just comes into the picture and makes it so much more beautiful.\u00a0 But, after we lost that baby, I just felt this yearning to have a child.\u00a0 So, we got pregnant pretty quickly after that, went in for the first ultra sound and found out that we were having twins.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the pregnancy was a little bit of a surprise, and the twins were definitely a surprise.\u00a0 We had no idea.\u00a0 We don\u2019t have twins in our family.\u00a0 So, we had two baby girls, after a pretty traumatic pregnancy.\u00a0 They are miracles, Ellie and Abby who are now seven.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot that long after that we got pregnant with Sara Kate, who is now four.\u00a0 Because I had so many complications in my pregnancy with the twins I like to joke that she was my easiest until she was born.\u00a0 (All laugh.)\u00a0 She is a pistol.\u00a0 She keeps us on our toes.\u00a0 Then, we would have had Audrey.\u00a0 Audrey would be two this coming April, and we\u2019re expecting again in June now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You actually got pregnant with Audrey when Kate about two years old herself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There was something even from the beginning of that pregnancy that signaled to you maybe something is just not right.\u00a0 What was that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I feel like it was the Holy Spirit preparing me.\u00a0 I was, very, very early on, not more than seven or eight weeks.\u00a0\u00a0 I went in for my first appointment.\u00a0 From the very beginning I just said, \u201cI don\u2019t have peace.\u00a0 I feel like something is going on.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen as it progressed, I still continued to feel like\u2014I would say \u201cI don\u2019t feel like I\u2019m gaining weight like I normally do.\u201d\u00a0 They would do all the standard tests and just say, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing that\u2019s significantly off.\u201d\u00a0 But my intuition during that time was\u2026\u00a0 And, it was totally different from anything I had ever felt in my other pregnancies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I wanted to ask you about that.\u00a0 Because, we have five children and I know in Mary Ann\u2019s pregnancies, there was always a season in each of those pregnancies where she would start to wonder.\u00a0 \u201cI haven\u2019t felt the baby kick for a while.\u201d Or, there\u2019d just be this momentary anxiety \u201cIs everything OK?\u201d\u00a0 What you felt during Audrey\u2019s pregnancy was different than what you\u2019d felt in the other pregnancies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was.\u00a0 I think that anxiety\u2014it\u2019s hard to ever be doing something so miraculous and not wonder what\u2019s going on in the depths that you can\u2019t see.\u00a0 But this was a weight that was just a part of the pregnancy that I just was so unsettled about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Obviously the doctors are telling you nothing is wrong, so there\u2019s nothing to confirm this restlessness in your heart.\u00a0 But there was, maybe a spiritual foreshadowing.\u00a0 The Holy Spirit was just preparing you for what was to come.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>A couple of days ago Barbara and I were at a wedding.\u00a0 You watch those two young people stand before each other. I have to think, Angie, you and Todd have to reflect back on those days.\u00a0 I was sitting out in the audience with Barbara and I was thinking, \u201cYou two have no idea what\u2019s in front of you.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not that God is a bad God or one who wants to punish His children, but He will allow that young couple, and he allowed you all to go through some very deep dark valleys.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking back, Angie to your decision to surrender to Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sure you\u2019ve thought about it.\u00a0 What would have happened if you had married Todd and not had a relationship with Christ\u2014the ability to believe in His word?\u00a0 Because, it was Christ who made this statement in John 16:20:\u00a0 Jesus says, \u201cTruly, truly I say to you, you will weep and lament.\u00a0 But the world will rejoice.\u00a0 You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s really only one who is able to turn sorrow into joy.\u00a0 At least, as I\u2019ve looked around in all of life, I don\u2019t know of another savior who offers the ability to take tremendous hurt, grief, loss which you experienced\u2014we\u2019ll hear more of that story later\u2014and replace it, and turn it into something where you really can smile.\u00a0 Because right now, Angie is smiling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, as Jesus was speaking those words, He was preparing His disciples for His own resurrection\u2014the sorrow that would come at His crucifixion, and the joy that they would experience in His resurrection.\u00a0 Really our own hope, our own joy comes for that same reason.\u00a0 We have a hope today because of what was accomplished at the cross and at the empty tomb.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe grief that you guys experienced as you walked this path; if there\u2019s no God, and no resurrection, then where is the hope?\u00a0 Where does your hope come from?\u00a0 Where does any sense of meaning or purpose come from?\u00a0 But, the fact that there is a God and He\u2019s revealed himself.\u00a0 And, not only revealed Himself, but demonstrated His power in His resurrection gives us strength for today, and a bright hope for tomorrow.\u00a0 That\u2019s a great song lyric, you guys might want to think of that for the next album you do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have copies of the book that Angie has written called <em>I Will Carry You: The Sacred Dance of Grief and Joy<\/em> that tells the story of your pregnancy with your daughter Audrey, and how God walked with you on a very difficult journey.\u00a0 You can go to FamilyLifeToday.com for more information about Angie\u2019s book.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain it\u2019s called <em>I Will Carry You<\/em>, and of course it brings to mind the book that your wife Barbara and your daughter Rebecca wrote together called <em>A Symphony in the Dark<\/em>, that tells the story of your granddaughter Molly who lived for seven days before she died.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain go to FamilyLifeToday.com for more information about these resources.
