thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition.\u00a0 I tell you what, we are going to get\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We are going to have a preacher today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, we are going to have a one-, two-, punch because\u2014at least when it comes to the subject that we are going to hear addressed:\u00a0 the subject of prayer.\u00a0 That is one of those subjects where I need to be punched from time to time.\u00a0 You know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Encouraged.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The guy who is going to be doing the punching\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Ooh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He is a guy who if he was preaching\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was going to say heavy-weight but he might not appreciate that.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If he was preaching 100 miles away, I\u2019d drive to hear him preach because he is just a great pastor and preacher.\u00a0 In fact, I am going to get a chance to be with him and his wife this fall at the True Woman 2010 events, they are going to be in Indianapolis in September and in Fort Worth in October.\u00a0 Crawford and Karen Loritts are going to be there, both of them speaking at the events.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking forward to just hearing him preach there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Crawford Loritts is a long-term friend; M. Bounds said in his classic book <em>Power Through Prayer<\/em> is absolutely, categorically, infinitely correct and right; and that is:\u00a0 The greatest thing a Christian can do is to pray\u2014is to pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis week I had two marvelous reminders of the power of prayer.\u00a0 I started to not use his name because I do not want to be guilty of name dropping; but I will\u2014not name drop, hopefully\u2014but use his name.\u00a0 I had the wonderful privilege on Wednesday of flying up and meeting with \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDr. Graham.\u00a0 He is frail.\u00a0 He is 90 years old.\u00a0 He is suffering from Parkinson\u2019s disease.\u00a0 He is losing his hearing, and his eyesight is weakening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI walked in with two other friends.\u00a0 I had a list of questions to ask him; but then when I sat down and we started talking, I didn\u2019t want to ask him anything.\u00a0 I just wanted to listen, but I did ask him this question.\u00a0 I said, \u201cDr. Graham, what is the most significant thing that has ever happened in your life and ministry.\u00a0 What is core?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBefore I could finish the question, he said, \u201cPrayer.\u00a0 Prayer has been everything.\u201d\u00a0 He didn\u2019t mention his contacts; he didn\u2019t mention Hearst \u201cPuff Graham\u201d; he didn\u2019t mention the people that he gathered around him; he didn\u2019t mention any of that.\u00a0 At 90 years old, he said with force in his voice, \u201cPrayer.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen on Friday I got a letter from a 90-year-old woman, Hazel Quackenbush.\u00a0 We have known Hazel for years.\u00a0 I went to college with her daughter.\u00a0 Her daughter dated and subsequently married one of my best friends.\u00a0 His name is Joe Douglas.\u00a0 Joe and I were prayer partners all the way through college.\u00a0 Joe\u2019s room was right next to mine.\u00a0 At night we would go to either one\u2019s room, and we would pray together in the evening.\u00a0 Joe is a pastor of a great church in New Jersey now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hadn\u2019t contacted Hazel in a long time and I saw in her letter that she had turned 90, and they had a big birthday for her.\u00a0 There was a phone number.\u00a0 So I called her Friday.\u00a0 I said, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cMrs. Quackenbush, do you know who this is?\u00a0 This is Crawford Loritts.\u00a0 Do you remember me?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cOf course I remember you.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t I remember you?\u201d\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 Then she said these words, \u201cYour picture is on my prayer board.\u201d\u00a0 That woman has been praying for me all these years.\u00a0 The greatest thing we can do is pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy do we pray?\u00a0 I think there are two reasons why we pray.\u00a0 I am going to give you the lesser of them, and then I want to dive into the main reason why we pray.\u00a0 Then I want to talk about the loving involvement of the Trinity in our prayer lives.\u00a0 It is going to be more relational than it sounds.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are two great reasons why we pray.\u00a0 The lesser of the two is to get our needs met.\u00a0 That is the lesser of the two reasons why we pray.\u00a0 We ask, and seek, and knock to get our needs met.\u00a0 Unfortunately\u2014those of us who are pastors, and in churches, and in ministry\u2014our prayer lives have been dominated by the lesser reason.\u00a0 That is the reason we get cynical because it is a little bit of a <em>quid pro quo<\/em>.\u00a0 We start using God, and we get a little cynical because God doesn\u2019t come through for us.\u00a0 That is the lesser reason.\u00a0 We pray because we want our needs met.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes we don\u2019t pray.\u00a0 The reason we don\u2019t pray is because of a pride issue.\u00a0 I have discovered in my life that proud people can\u2019t pray.\u00a0 Proud people struggle with prayer, and the reason is quite obvious when you think about it because prayer is an expression of our neediness.\u00a0 You cannot pray authentically until you embrace your own need.\u00a0 Prayer is a statement that I am desperate.\u00a0 Prayer is a statement that I don\u2019t have it all together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am forever grateful to Bob Lepine for sending me one of the top five books that I have read in the last five to ten years.\u00a0 It is a book by a guy by the name of Paul Miller.\u00a0 The name of the book is <em>A Praying Life<\/em>.\u00a0 The first chapter and his chapter on the relationship between cynicism and prayer are worth the price of the book itself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMiller says that, \u201cOne of the subtlest hindrances to prayer is probably the most pervasive.\u00a0 In the broader culture and in our churches, we prize intellect, competency, and wealth.\u00a0 Because we can do life without God, praying seems nice but unnecessary.\u00a0 Money can do what prayer does.\u00a0 It is quicker and less time-consuming.\u00a0 Our trust in ourselves and in our talents makes us\u201d\u2014listen to this line\u2014\u201cstructurally independent of God.\u00a0 As a result, exhortations to pray don\u2019t stick.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a little bit of a bind, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 You aren\u2019t going to pray until you are in touch with your need.\u00a0 As a pastor, I have learned that I can cajole, and preach, and guilt people, and tell them how to do stuff\u2014particularly in the prayer area; but they are not going to pray until somewhere along the line there is this \u201cavalanche of need\u201d that grips them.\u00a0 That is the tipping point.\u00a0 That is when we really, really pray.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is not what I am going to talk about today.\u00a0 I am going to talk about the second reason\u2014which is the primary reason, biblically\u2014I\u2019m convinced of this from Genesis to Revelation.\u00a0 The real reason why we pray\u2026the real reason why we pray is because God wants us to experience His love and care for us.\u00a0 Meeting our needs is a backstroke issue with God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe real reason why we pray is because of the loving heart of God that pursues us and wants us\u2026wants us to experience His love and care for us.\u00a0 This takes legalism out of prayer.\u00a0 This really motivates us to pray because, quite frankly, prayer is the means through which we hang out with God.\u00a0 There is no intimacy with God apart from interaction with His heart.\u00a0 The way that we interact with His heart is by seeking Him, talking to Him, experiencing Him.\u00a0 Prayer is massive.\u00a0 It is the gateway into the very presence of God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is the reason why Hazel Quackenbush and Billy Graham will answer, \u201cBam!\u00a0 Prayer is everything.\u201d\u00a0 They weren\u2019t saying, like going to the grocery store, God just checked off what they were asking for.\u00a0 They were talking about the intimate relationship that they had with a loving Father.\u00a0 It is the way through which we hang out with God.\u00a0 God loves us and desires to have an intimate relationship with us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is why, in the Bible, the Trinity is pictured as a loving resource.\u00a0 Have you ever thought about it?\u00a0 The three persons of the Godhead major in prayer on our behalf.\u00a0 It is this picture of a sovereign, loving, pursuant God\u2014through God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit\u2014chasing us down and drawing us to Himself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, let\u2019s just take a snapshot of these three portraits.\u00a0 The first portrait is a caring God.\u00a0 The second portrait is a powerful representative.\u00a0 The third portrait is a passionate interceder.\u00a0 Look at what He says here in Luke 11\u2014I really want to look at verses 11-13 but I do want to just drill down the opening word when Jesus\u2019 disciples came to Him and asked Him, \u201cWould You teach us how to pray?\u201d\u00a0 He says, \u201cYes.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the first thing that you say, \u201cFather.\u201d\u00a0 Father\u2014we sometimes skip over that and look at all the other things that He says in the Lord\u2019s Prayer or the model prayer that the Lord prayed.\u00a0 But it begins with, \u201cFather.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen Jesus picks up the explanation and the application of that down in verse 11, \u201cWhat father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent?\u00a0 Or if he asks for an egg will give him a scorpion?\u00a0 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children\u201d\u2014mm, mm\u2014\u201chow much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t want to get caught in the weeds with the text here and analyze the analogy that He is talking about, this kind of thing; but I do want to make a few applications or inferences, implications from what He is saying.\u00a0 One is that God wants to give us what is good for us.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to play with words.\u00a0 Notice that I said what is good for us, not necessarily what is good to us.\u00a0 That will change the way that we pray.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod gives us what is good for us and not necessarily what is good to us.\u00a0 So, as we read this text here, don\u2019t get superficial.\u00a0 He is not saying that God always does stuff that is good to us.\u00a0 God doesn\u2019t do things that are good to us; he does things that are good for us.\u00a0 The implications are right there.\u00a0 God does want the best for us, but not by our definition\u2014not by our definition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, God\u2014what we think is good could be harmful, could be harmful\u2014but God always wants what is good.\u00a0 The third implication is what might be a blessing to you could be a curse to me.\u00a0 You got to get past this comparison, jealousy stuff.\u00a0 Simply because God said, \u201cYes,\u201d to someone else about how their prodigal\u2014that their prodigal came home when they were 18\u2014don\u2019t be prescriptive when it comes to God because what could be a blessing to you from a timing perspective could be a dastardly curse to me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhenever you are going through a tremendous challenge, it is tremendously important to immerse yourself in the control of the Spirit of God.\u00a0 You need to see where you are going and what you are doing through supernatural eyes.\u00a0 We have got to do it counterintuitive; run to the Father.\u00a0 I love what Warren Wiersbe says along these lines.\u00a0 He makes the observation, \u201cBecause God knows us and loves us, we never need to be afraid of the answer He gives us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was about 10 or 11 years old, I was swimming up at the Boys Club there in Newark, New Jersey, which wasn\u2019t too far from our house.\u00a0 A bunch of us were just jumping off the side of the pool and just turning in the air as we jumped and went in the water.\u00a0 When I jumped off, I was a little too close to the side of the pool.\u00a0 I turned around and hit my chin on the side of the pool.\u00a0 I busted my chin.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad worked nights so he happened to be home when they called my father.\u00a0 He came and got me and took me to the hospital.\u00a0 Back in those days, they didn\u2019t have the anesthesia that they have now, this kind of thing.\u00a0 So, when you got stitches, you got stitches and everything that went with it.\u00a0 So, I\u2019ll never forget this.\u00a0 I can remember it to this day.\u00a0 I\u2019m lying there on the table and the doctor says to my dad, \u201cHold his arms down.\u00a0 Hold his arms down.\u201d\u00a0 He stitched me up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad would not hurt me for anything, but sometimes you have to be held down before you are fixed.\u00a0 Do you hear what I am saying to you?\u00a0 Somebody here needs to hear that.\u00a0 Sometimes you just have to be held down before you are fixed.\u00a0 You have to trust in a loving God who sees the beginning from the end, and He is not out to get us.\u00a0 It hurts like the dickens, and you want to cuss and throw things, and you want to do bad stuff; but He says, \u201cI\u2019ve got to hold you down until I fix you.\u201d\u00a0 So we have the portrait of a loving father that does things that are good for us but not always good to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We\u2019ve been listening to Dr. Crawford Loritts talking about prayer and about the Father who chastens the ones whom He loves.\u00a0 That is an important reminder when we are in the midst of trial to know that all discipline seems unpleasant at the time, but it does yield the peaceable fruit of righteousness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There are two things in that message that really just stood out to me personally.\u00a0 One is\u2014prayerlessness generally can be associated with arrogance or pride.\u00a0 I have just found in my own life, when I am most dependent upon God, I am not typically as full of myself.\u00a0 The reason I say it that way, the closer I get to Christ, I am constantly being convicted how self-absorbed I really can be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing Crawford said around the love of God.\u00a0 It is the love of God that compels us to turn our hearts back to God.\u00a0 Even in the midst of discipline, God\u2019s love invites us back into a relationship with Him.\u00a0 I am thinking of Romans 8.\u00a0 The final verses talk about neither height nor depth nor anything else in all of creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what you as a listener right now are experiencing, but I want you to know there really is a God in heaven who is passionately in love with you and is pursuing you and wants a relationship with you.\u00a0 Yes, He loves you enough to get your attention.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Part of the relationship we have with Him is time with Him in communication.\u00a0 If you say, \u201cI have a relationship with somebody,\u201d and then you don\u2019t talk with them or when you do, it\u2019s a quick, \u201cHere, I need this,\u201d that is not much of a relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe came across a book recently that I think is very helpful on the subject of prayer.\u00a0 Paul Miller wrote a book called <em>A Praying Life<\/em>, and it confronts straight-up a lot of the issues we struggle with in prayer, whether it is praying together as a couple or just being people committed to a life where prayer is a regular part of our spiritual activity, a regular spiritual discipline.\u00a0 In the book he shares a number of insights and conclusions about how we connect the broken pieces of our lives and allow prayer, even when it is poorly-delivered prayer, to fill in the gaps with meaning and some substance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can find out more about the book when you go online at FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 We have information about Dennis and Barbara Rainey\u2019s daily devotional <em>Moments with You<\/em>, or about praying for your family, praying for your children.\u00a0 Again, find out more online at FamilyLifeToday.com or call us toll-free for more information about resources that are available.\u00a0 1-800-FL-TODAY; <\/strong>We are going to have a preacher today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, we are going to have a one-, two-, punch because\u2014at least when it comes to the subject that we are going to hear addressed:\u00a0 the subject of prayer.\u00a0 That is one of those subjects where I need to be punched from time to time.\u00a0 You know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Encouraged.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The guy who is going to be doing the punching\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Ooh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He is a guy who if he was preaching\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was going to say heavy-weight but he might not appreciate that.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If he was preaching 100 miles away, I\u2019d drive to hear him preach because he is just a great pastor and preacher.\u00a0 In fact, I am going to get a chance to be with him and his wife this fall at the True Woman 2010 events, they are going to be in Indianapolis in September and in Fort Worth in October.\u00a0 Crawford and Karen Loritts are going to be there, both of them speaking at the events.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking forward to just hearing him preach there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Crawford Loritts is a long-term friend; in fact, we go all the way back to the early 80\u2019s.\u00a0 We both share the same birth date, and he is the pastor of Fellowship Bible Church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is the same birth date, but one of you is older.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am more mature.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe just turned 60 this year, okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He is the pastor of Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell, Georgia.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Bounds said in his classic book <em>Power Through Prayer<\/em> is absolutely, categorically, infinitely correct and right; and that is:\u00a0 The greatest thing a Christian can do is to pray\u2014is to pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis week I had two marvelous reminders of the power of prayer.\u00a0 I started to not use his name because I do not want to be guilty of name dropping; but I will\u2014not name drop, hopefully\u2014but use his name.\u00a0 I had the wonderful privilege on Wednesday of flying up and meeting with \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDr. Graham.\u00a0 He is frail.\u00a0 He is 90 years old.\u00a0 He is suffering from Parkinson\u2019s disease.\u00a0 He is losing his hearing, and his eyesight is weakening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI walked in with two other friends.\u00a0 I had a list of questions to ask him; but then when I sat down and we started talking, I didn\u2019t want to ask him anything.\u00a0 I just wanted to listen, but I did ask him this question.\u00a0 I said, \u201cDr. Graham, what is the most significant thing that has ever happened in your life and ministry.\u00a0 What is core?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBefore I could finish the question, he said, \u201cPrayer.\u00a0 Prayer has been everything.\u201d\u00a0 He didn\u2019t mention his contacts; he didn\u2019t mention Hearst \u201cPuff Graham\u201d; he didn\u2019t mention the people that he gathered around him; he didn\u2019t mention any of that.\u00a0 At 90 years old, he said with force in his voice, \u201cPrayer.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen on Friday I got a letter from a 90-year-old woman, Hazel Quackenbush.\u00a0 We have known Hazel for years.\u00a0 I went to college with her daughter.\u00a0 Her daughter dated and subsequently married one of my best friends.\u00a0 His name is Joe Douglas.\u00a0 Joe and I were prayer partners all the way through college.\u00a0 Joe\u2019s room was right next to mine.\u00a0 At night we would go to either one\u2019s room, and we would pray together in the evening.\u00a0 Joe is a pastor of a great church in New Jersey now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hadn\u2019t contacted Hazel in a long time and I saw in her letter that she had turned 90, and they had a big birthday for her.\u00a0 There was a phone number.\u00a0 So I called her Friday.\u00a0 I said, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cMrs. Quackenbush, do you know who this is?\u00a0 This is Crawford Loritts.\u00a0 Do you remember me?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cOf course I remember you.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t I remember you?\u201d\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 Then she said these words, \u201cYour picture is on my prayer board.\u201d\u00a0 That woman has been praying for me all these years.\u00a0 The greatest thing we can do is pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy do we pray?\u00a0 I think there are two reasons why we pray.\u00a0 I am going to give you the lesser of them, and then I want to dive into the main reason why we pray.\u00a0 Then I want to talk about the loving involvement of the Trinity in our prayer lives.\u00a0 It is going to be more relational than it sounds.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are two great reasons why we pray.\u00a0 The lesser of the two is to get our needs met.\u00a0 That is the lesser of the two reasons why we pray.\u00a0 We ask, and seek, and knock to get our needs met.\u00a0 Unfortunately\u2014those of us who are pastors, and in churches, and in ministry\u2014our prayer lives have been dominated by the lesser reason.\u00a0 That is the reason we get cynical because it is a little bit of a <em>quid pro quo<\/em>.\u00a0 We start using God, and we get a little cynical because God doesn\u2019t come through for us.\u00a0 That is the lesser reason.\u00a0 We pray because we want our needs met.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes we don\u2019t pray.\u00a0 The reason we don\u2019t pray is because of a pride issue.\u00a0 I have discovered in my life that proud people can\u2019t pray.\u00a0 Proud people struggle with prayer, and the reason is quite obvious when you think about it because prayer is an expression of our neediness.\u00a0 You cannot pray authentically until you embrace your own need.\u00a0 Prayer is a statement that I am desperate.\u00a0 Prayer is a statement that I don\u2019t have it all together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am forever grateful to Bob Lepine for sending me one of the top five books that I have read in the last five to ten years.\u00a0 It is a book by a guy by the name of Paul Miller.\u00a0 The name of the book is <em>A Praying Life<\/em>.\u00a0 The first chapter and his chapter on the relationship between cynicism and prayer are worth the price of the book itself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMiller says that, \u201cOne of the subtlest hindrances to prayer is probably the most pervasive.\u00a0 In the broader culture and in our churches, we prize intellect, competency, and wealth.\u00a0 Because we can do life without God, praying seems nice but unnecessary.\u00a0 Money can do what prayer does.\u00a0 It is quicker and less time-consuming.\u00a0 Our trust in ourselves and in our talents makes us\u201d\u2014listen to this line\u2014\u201cstructurally independent of God.\u00a0 As a result, exhortations to pray don\u2019t stick.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a little bit of a bind, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 You aren\u2019t going to pray until you are in touch with your need.\u00a0 As a pastor, I have learned that I can cajole, and preach, and guilt people, and tell them how to do stuff\u2014particularly in the prayer area; but they are not going to pray until somewhere along the line there is this \u201cavalanche of need\u201d that grips them.\u00a0 That is the tipping point.\u00a0 That is when we really, really pray.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is not what I am going to talk about today.\u00a0 I am going to talk about the second reason\u2014which is the primary reason, biblically\u2014I\u2019m convinced of this from Genesis to Revelation.\u00a0 The real reason why we pray\u2026the real reason why we pray is because God wants us to experience His love and care for us.\u00a0 Meeting our needs is a backstroke issue with God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe real reason why we pray is because of the loving heart of God that pursues us and wants us\u2026wants us to experience His love and care for us.\u00a0 This takes legalism out of prayer.\u00a0 This really motivates us to pray because, quite frankly, prayer is the means through which we hang out with God.\u00a0 There is no intimacy with God apart from interaction with His heart.\u00a0 The way that we interact with His heart is by seeking Him, talking to Him, experiencing Him.\u00a0 Prayer is massive.\u00a0 It is the gateway into the very presence of God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is the reason why Hazel Quackenbush and Billy Graham will answer, \u201cBam!\u00a0 Prayer is everything.\u201d\u00a0 They weren\u2019t saying, like going to the grocery store, God just checked off what they were asking for.\u00a0 They were talking about the intimate relationship that they had with a loving Father.\u00a0 It is the way through which we hang out with God.\u00a0 God loves us and desires to have an intimate relationship with us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is why, in the Bible, the Trinity is pictured as a loving resource.\u00a0 Have you ever thought about it?\u00a0 The three persons of the Godhead major in prayer on our behalf.\u00a0 It is this picture of a sovereign, loving, pursuant God\u2014through God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit\u2014chasing us down and drawing us to Himself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, let\u2019s just take a snapshot of these three portraits.\u00a0 The first portrait is a caring God.\u00a0 The second portrait is a powerful representative.\u00a0 The third portrait is a passionate interceder.\u00a0 Look at what He says here in Luke 11\u2014I really want to look at verses 11-13 but I do want to just drill down the opening word when Jesus\u2019 disciples came to Him and asked Him, \u201cWould You teach us how to pray?\u201d\u00a0 He says, \u201cYes.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the first thing that you say, \u201cFather.\u201d\u00a0 Father\u2014we sometimes skip over that and look at all the other things that He says in the Lord\u2019s Prayer or the model prayer that the Lord prayed.\u00a0 But it begins with, \u201cFather.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen Jesus picks up the explanation and the application of that down in verse 11, \u201cWhat father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent?\u00a0 Or if he asks for an egg will give him a scorpion?\u00a0 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children\u201d\u2014mm, mm\u2014\u201chow much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t want to get caught in the weeds with the text here and analyze the analogy that He is talking about, this kind of thing; but I do want to make a few applications or inferences, implications from what He is saying.\u00a0 One is that God wants to give us what is good for us.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to play with words.\u00a0 Notice that I said what is good for us, not necessarily what is good to us.\u00a0 That will change the way that we pray.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod gives us what is good for us and not necessarily what is good to us.\u00a0 So, as we read this text here, don\u2019t get superficial.\u00a0 He is not saying that God always does stuff that is good to us.\u00a0 God doesn\u2019t do things that are good to us; he does things that are good for us.\u00a0 The implications are right there.\u00a0 God does want the best for us, but not by our definition\u2014not by our definition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, God\u2014what we think is good could be harmful, could be harmful\u2014but God always wants what is good.\u00a0 The third implication is what might be a blessing to you could be a curse to me.\u00a0 You got to get past this comparison, jealousy stuff.\u00a0 Simply because God said, \u201cYes,\u201d to someone else about how their prodigal\u2014that their prodigal came home when they were 18\u2014don\u2019t be prescriptive when it comes to God because what could be a blessing to you from a timing perspective could be a dastardly curse to me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhenever you are going through a tremendous challenge, it is tremendously important to immerse yourself in the control of the Spirit of God.\u00a0 You need to see where you are going and what you are doing through supernatural eyes.\u00a0 We have got to do it counterintuitive; run to the Father.\u00a0 I love what Warren Wiersbe says along these lines.\u00a0 He makes the observation, \u201cBecause God knows us and loves us, we never need to be afraid of the answer He gives us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was about 10 or 11 years old, I was swimming up at the Boys Club there in Newark, New Jersey, which wasn\u2019t too far from our house.\u00a0 A bunch of us were just jumping off the side of the pool and just turning in the air as we jumped and went in the water.\u00a0 When I jumped off, I was a little too close to the side of the pool.\u00a0 I turned around and hit my chin on the side of the pool.\u00a0 I busted my chin.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad worked nights so he happened to be home when they called my father.\u00a0 He came and got me and took me to the hospital.\u00a0 Back in those days, they didn\u2019t have the anesthesia that they have now, this kind of thing.\u00a0 So, when you got stitches, you got stitches and everything that went with it.\u00a0 So, I\u2019ll never forget this.\u00a0 I can remember it to this day.\u00a0 I\u2019m lying there on the table and the doctor says to my dad, \u201cHold his arms down.\u00a0 Hold his arms down.\u201d\u00a0 He stitched me up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad would not hurt me for anything, but sometimes you have to be held down before you are fixed.\u00a0 Do you hear what I am saying to you?\u00a0 Somebody here needs to hear that.\u00a0 Sometimes you just have to be held down before you are fixed.\u00a0 You have to trust in a loving God who sees the beginning from the end, and He is not out to get us.\u00a0 It hurts like the dickens, and you want to cuss and throw things, and you want to do bad stuff; but He says, \u201cI\u2019ve got to hold you down until I fix you.\u201d\u00a0 So we have the portrait of a loving father that does things that are good for us but not always good to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We\u2019ve been listening to Dr. Crawford Loritts talking about prayer and about the Father who chastens the ones whom He loves.\u00a0 That is an important reminder when we are in the midst of trial to know that all discipline seems unpleasant at the time, but it does yield the peaceable fruit of righteousness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There are two things in that message that really just stood out to me personally.\u00a0 One is\u2014prayerlessness generally can be associated with arrogance or pride.\u00a0 I have just found in my own life, when I am most dependent upon God, I am not typically as full of myself.\u00a0 The reason I say it that way, the closer I get to Christ, I am constantly being convicted how self-absorbed I really can be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing Crawford said around the love of God.\u00a0 It is the love of God that compels us to turn our hearts back to God.\u00a0 Even in the midst of discipline, God\u2019s love invites us back into a relationship with Him.\u00a0 I am thinking of Romans 8.\u00a0 The final verses talk about neither height nor depth nor anything else in all of creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what you as a listener right now are experiencing, but I want you to know there really is a God in heaven who is passionately in love with you and is pursuing you and wants a relationship with you.\u00a0 Yes, He loves you enough to get your attention.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Part of the relationship we have with Him is time with Him in communication.\u00a0 If you say, \u201cI have a relationship with somebody,\u201d and then you don\u2019t talk with them or when you do, it\u2019s a quick, \u201cHere, I need this,\u201d that is not much of a relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe came across a book recently that I think is very helpful on the subject of prayer.\u00a0 Paul Miller wrote a book called <em>A Praying Life<\/em>, and it confronts straight-up a lot of the issues we struggle with in prayer, whether it is praying together as a couple or just being people committed to a life where prayer is a regular part of our spiritual activity, a regular spiritual discipline.\u00a0 In the book he shares a number of insights and conclusions about how we connect the broken pieces of our lives and allow prayer, even when it is poorly-delivered prayer, to fill in the gaps with meaning and some substance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can find out more about the book when you go online at FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 We have information about Dennis and Barbara Rainey\u2019s daily devotional <em>Moments with You<\/em>, or about praying for your family, praying for your children.\u00a0 Again, find out more online at FamilyLifeToday.com or call us toll-free for more information about resources that are available.\u00a0 1-800-FL-TODAY;
