Dennis, I don\u2019t know if they call it \u201cNick at Nite\u201d anymore or if it\u2019s \u201cTV Land.\u201d\u00a0 I am just sitting here trying to figure out what\u2019s the difference between classic television and reruns.\u00a0 I mean classic television is just reruns, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is but it\u2019s the most popular, kind of back by popular demand.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So I guess we can call this \u201cclassic <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>,\u201d don\u2019t you think?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, they have ESPN Classics, they have the games that are worth replaying for the fans.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, what our listeners are going to hear this week is classic <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> radio.\u00a0 This series comes from a more than a decade ago but we really did an expanded look at the subject of premarital preparation, getting ready for the marriage, not the wedding.\u00a0 It was when we launched our <em>Preparing for Marriage<\/em> workbook which has just been revised and updated by the way, and it looks great, they have done a great job with it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I still think, Bob, it is the finest marriage preparation that a couple of single people can go through prior to getting married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I am just sitting here thinking about the fact that we have been doing this close to two decades now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know the only way we could do this is because of two groups of people. There were no FamilyLife marriage conferences, just a little bit of preparation from a couple by the name of Don and Sally Meredith.\u00a0 Sally is the spiritual mother of Barbara.\u00a0 She led Barbara to Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Sally, do you remember leading Barbara to Christ?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sally<\/strong>:\u00a0 I sure do in my kitchen, very small little kitchen and Barbara was really ready to receive the Lord.\u00a0 So yes, it was a special time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 And it was a life-changing experience for her and then they did our pre-marriage counseling.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd frankly, Bob, most of that preparation occurred sitting on the edge of a bed in a dungy, darkened hotel room in some town south of Oklahoma City.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even remember the name of the town.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, and it\u2019s not the end of the Earth but you can see it perfect.\u00a0 It\u2019s just over the edge from Paul\u2019s Valley.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon Meredith, not the football Don Meredith, but Don and Sally sat there in chairs, while Barbara and I sat on the edge of the bed and we have been \u2013 frankly, Bob, we had not even been dating.\u00a0 Now, people would laugh at that looking back on that now because we spent 52 days out of 55 together.\u00a0 Somehow, someway, we were always together.\u00a0 But truthfully, it was not a romantic relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean Barbara and I had gone fishing together, we had gone on picnics together and I don\u2019t know some guys out there go come on, you dog, you were romancing her all the way.\u00a0 But I hadn\u2019t given her any roses and I hadn\u2019t made any statements.\u00a0 The only statement I had made was attempting to hold her hand.\u00a0 Now, that was the first romantic overture.\u00a0 And she had nailed me in my tracks so quickly that died a quick death there in North Park Shopping Center in Dallas, Texas.\u00a0 But the only preparation we had was in that motel room and Don basically gave us about an hour\u2019s worth of marriage preparation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, you know I was just thinking as we talk about marriage today and I talk about a faith relationship and how God sovereignly brings people together and I really felt that about Barbara and Dennis.\u00a0 It\u2019s just great now to look back and just see the confirmation of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA faith relationship, I define that as looking beyond your mate\u2019s weaknesses to God\u2019s sovereignty and promises.\u00a0 By sovereignty, we just mean that God orchestrates the universe and that\u2019s what I felt about Dennis and Barbara that day that was real evidence that God was bringing them together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted them as I encourage other couples and myself today to realize that God is really involved in bringing you together.\u00a0 If you look beyond your mate\u2019s weaknesses to God as the guarantor of your needs, then you don\u2019t need to fear their weaknesses.\u00a0 And then if you begn to concentrate on the promises that follow in God\u2019s word when you are talking about marriage, then you have the hope that in spite of their weaknesses, God can still accomplish your needs and your life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 But we ended up getting engaged at that point and six weeks later, we got married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Six weeks?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Six weeks, that\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCouples take enormous amount of time to get ready for the marriage ceremony but they don\u2019t take a lot of time getting ready for marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Everything in the culture points them in a different direction, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, right here, I have got exhibit A.\u00a0 Now, this is a heavy exhibit.\u00a0 It\u2019s a heavy exhibit.\u00a0 How thick would you say that magazine is, Bob?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 That looks like a --\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Inch and a quarter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Like a medium sized city phone book is what it looks like.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 It does.\u00a0 It\u2019s entitled <em>Modern Bride<\/em> and this is the special issue.\u00a0 I am sure they have a special issue --\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Every issue is a special issue.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Every issue is a special issue, but I had my secretary look through this and do a quick survey at the advertisements, the number of pages around different products in this magazine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 There were advertisements for orchestras, there were advertisements for jewelry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Now, hang on, orchestras?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, one page, just one page on that.\u00a0 There was one page for cigarettes.\u00a0 That\u2019s a dying part of the deal, and perfume and beauty aids, birth control got a page and here we find stationery and invitations, 17 pages.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 It\u2019s a big market for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Big market for that.\u00a0 Champagne and wine got a couple of pages, but are you interested in knowing the top three products that were advertised in <em>Modern Bride<\/em> magazine?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, here they are.\u00a0 In third place, china and silver, not Red China but china.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Nice china, very nice china.\u00a0 It\u2019s expensive let me tell you, been there done that.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSweetheart, we don\u2019t even have a table to eat on and you can eat off paper plates forever for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Destination resorts in second place.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s the only reason I read <em>Bride<\/em> magazine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When we were getting ready?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You read that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 I thumbed through it to look for some honeymoon opportunities.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 No man would read that magazine, 86 pages worth of advertising for destinations and resorts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 For honeymoons, right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd #1, no peer, 301 pages of advertising, this is why it\u2019s so thick, wedding dresses and shoes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 No surprise there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 No surprise there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yes, Bob, there is one advertisement for something we didn\u2019t do but I think it\u2019s a beautiful symbolic picture of releasing your daughter at a wedding.\u00a0 There was actually an ad for butterflies, live butterflies that you could release at the wedding or the reception.\u00a0 Now, I am a gardener and you can buy ladybugs to eat the aphids but this one \u2013 this was pretty cute here, butterflies.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 I just want to see the postman delivering the box of live butterflies.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, me too.\u00a0 And I have got to move to exhibit B for our culture at this point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a cartoon from Cathy.\u00a0 A young man sitting at the table with Cathy turns to her and he says, \u201cWhy, Cathy, did you get so weird?\u00a0 I only asked you to marry me.\u201d\u00a0 He goes on to say, \u201cIf it doesn\u2019t work out, we will get divorced.\u00a0 What\u2019s the big deal?\u00a0 Half the people I know are divorced.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe adds, \u201cLots of my friends look at the first marriage as a trial run anyway.\u00a0 You try as long as you can but then you move on.\u201d\u00a0 And the last frame of the cartoon has Cathy with her eyes crossed thinking goodbye, till death do us part.\u00a0 Hello until couple\u2019s therapy moneyruns out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me suggest three goals for the engagement period.\u00a0 First of all, you need to seal the decision.\u00a0 For some, you are going to need to remake the decision you have made right.\u00a0 Now, that may sound confusing.\u00a0 Some say, \u201cWell, I am already engaged.\u201d\u00a0 Well, have you really gone about making that decision in a biblical fashion?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second goal is to be involved in the process of preparing for marriage.\u00a0 Now, that sounds so simplistic, but preparing for marriage is a process and this process is for all of those who are being impacted by a man and a woman who are about to leave, cleave, and become one flesh.\u00a0 It\u2019s for those who are leaving the young man and the young woman who are forming that relationship.\u00a0 It\u2019s for those who are being left.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe process of preparing for marriage, I believe, ought to be a profound experience for mom and dad as they go through a process of letting go of deciding what this biblical component of allowing your son, allowing your daughter to leave looks like.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the third is to begin to deal with real issues.\u00a0 A lot of couples get married and they \u2013 well how should we say \u2013 they have got stars in their eyes.\u00a0 It has been said, \u201cLove is blind but marriage is an eye opener.\u201d\u00a0 I think you don\u2019t have to wait until marriage to have your eyes opened.\u00a0 One of the problems that occurs is that most family members, most friends are not asking the tough questions that a young couple need to be asking each other and perhaps interacting around as a couple prior to getting married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Now, you can\u2019t wait until you\u2019ve got everything perfect in all of these areas to move ahead.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 You know I am glad you asked that, Bob, because I have counseled I don\u2019t know how many couples and they have such a refined checklist waiting for that perfect person, that prefect situation that they will never get married.\u00a0 I mean they got their rooms, their apartments wallpapered with checklists, and there are no perfect people, there was only one of those and --\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 And he didn\u2019t get married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And he didn\u2019t get married, but we are called by him to marry an imperfect person and frankly, that\u2019s what makes the whole marriage thing go round and round and round.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tProverbs 24, verses 3 and 4 give us a familiar passage, \u201cBy wisdom, a house is built and by understanding it is established and by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, we want the precious and pleasant riches, but many times, we don\u2019t want the process that God gives us from the Bible to achieve that objective.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we have to start with a biblical vision for what a marriage is to be and what it is to look like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am convinced today that we approach marriage much like it is just a two-dimensional institution, body and soul.\u00a0 We ignore the spiritual element that truly makes up a marriage relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we had a goldfish bowl right here in the middle of our table here in the studio and we had two goldfish in the bowl and we took the goldfish out.\u00a0 Immediately, several of our listeners would cringe if they knew we had done that.\u00a0 They would say, \u201cWhy are you doing that?\u00a0 That\u2019s harmful to them.\u201d\u00a0 And if we put them back into the water that\u2019s in goldfish bowl, immediately those fish would begin swimming around and they would be okay, why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause goldfish were made to live in an environment of water.\u00a0 Marriage, like the goldfish, was made to take place in a right relationship with God.\u00a0 It\u2019s a spiritual institution.\u00a0 And the water in the goldfish bowl can be compared to the spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ and with God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you don\u2019t have that, if you are not connected to God vitally, day by day, experiencing him, knowing him, walking with him, having him work in your life and change you, then at that point, I question whether you are truly going to be able to experience marriage as God intended.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So couples don\u2019t just need a vision for how to make a marriage work over time, they need to have a bigger picture of what God intended for marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\u00a0 In fact, marriage in the garden started between a man, a woman and their God.\u00a0 You would have never had a marriage without God creating it.\u00a0 A spiritual being a personal God who has stepped out of eternity in the person of Jesus Christ created marriage.\u00a0 So marriage is a spiritual institution at its core.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCouples today are ignoring the spiritual dimension of their lives hoping to have a successful marriage.\u00a0 It will never happen.\u00a0 And that\u2019s why the Bible is so important. When you go back to Proverbs 24 it talks about \u201cBy wisdom, a house is built,\u201d where are you going to get wisdom, from the world or from God?\u00a0 And if you are going to get it from God, you are going to get it from the scripture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFrankly, one of the places where the Christian community is most missing it is in the process of equipping young couples and in preparing them for the marriage relationship.\u00a0 We spend far more time preparing for the wedding and all the detail surrounding that than we do preparing for the marriage.\u00a0 We spend more money on the wedding dress than we do on marriage preparation and we ought to reverse the process.\u00a0 I know I just went through this.\u00a0 I looked at the budget and I shook my head and I thought you know, there is something terribly wrong about this picture here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMatthew 7 verses 24 through 27 talks about a man who built his house on a foundation.\u00a0 And because of that, when the storms came, the floods pounded him, the rains came, the wind, that house stood.\u00a0 But the house that was built on the sand that didn\u2019t have process, that wasn\u2019t built upon the scripture, that didn\u2019t have an intentional process about it, that house failed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Bob, I think that\u2019s what young couples need to consider today as they begin to venture out towards marriage, how much am I going to commit to truly prepare for my marriage and how am I going to go about doing it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat marriage license that you get on the day of the wedding ceremony doesn\u2019t constitute a marriage.\u00a0 It only gives you the right to begin building a marriage, to being to make a marriage, to make that relationship work.\u00a0 And if you don\u2019t have the blueprints, who is going to tell you how to build, the world, television?\u00a0 Those relationships are failing left and right.\u00a0 The scripture contains the authoritative word of God that gives us the hope that two sinful, selfish human beings can make a permanent covenant called marriage, work.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And this coincides too with the work that we have done recently in putting together a <em>Preparing for Marriage<\/em> workbook that is designed for couples to use either on their own or with a pastor or a counselor or I guess ideally, with an older couple who would step into their lives at this point and be a mentor couple taking them through the <em>Preparing for Marriage<\/em> material.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I would encourage any couple who want to get the maximum value out of some older saints in the church to sit down and begin to pray about who they want to challenge to mentor them and walk them through this process.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFrankly, if I were an engaged couple today, I would say to you target a couple in your church, start praying and then go to them and say, \u201cWould you go through this workbook with us?\u00a0 Would you just coach us as we move through these eight sessions?\u00a0 And would you encourage us in our early months and years of marriage to establish this relationship on the right foundation?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Bob, I think if appropriately approached, there isn\u2019t an older couple who wouldn\u2019t delight in taking a young couple through and teaching them out of their own successes as well as their falures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and if you look at the work that our team has done in the new addition of this workbook, it really makes it very simple for any couple to come alongside a younger couple and take them through the material.\u00a0 I agree with you, I think both couples will profit from that experience.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd of course, we have got the brand new <em>Preparing for Marriage<\/em> workbook revised and updated in our FamilyLife Today Resource Center.\u00a0 You can go online at FamlylifeToday.com for more information about how to get a copy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, it\u2019s FamlylifeToday.com, or call to request a copy 1-800-FL-TODAY is the number, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t1-800-358-6329. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sally<\/strong>:\u00a0 I sure do in my kitchen, very small little kitchen and Barbara was really ready to receive the Lord.\u00a0 So yes, it was a special time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 And it was a life-changing experience for her and then they did our pre-marriage counseling.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd frankly, Bob, most of that preparation occurred sitting on the edge of a bed in a dungy, darkened hotel room in some town south of Oklahoma City.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even remember the name of the town.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, and it\u2019s not the end of the Earth but you can see it perfect.\u00a0 It\u2019s just over the edge from Paul\u2019s Valley.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon Meredith, not the football Don Meredith, but Don and Sally sat there in chairs, while Barbara and I sat on the edge of the bed and we have been \u2013 frankly, Bob, we had not even been dating.\u00a0 Now, people would laugh at that looking back on that now because we spent 52 days out of 55 together.\u00a0 Somehow, someway, we were always together.\u00a0 But truthfully, it was not a romantic relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean Barbara and I had gone fishing together, we had gone on picnics together and I don\u2019t know some guys out there go come on, you dog, you were romancing her all the way.\u00a0 But I hadn\u2019t given her any roses and I hadn\u2019t made any statements.\u00a0 The only statement I had made was attempting to hold her hand.\u00a0 Now, that was the first romantic overture.\u00a0 And she had nailed me in my tracks so quickly that died a quick death there in North Park Shopping Center in Dallas, Texas.\u00a0 But the only preparation we had was in that motel room and Don basically gave us about an hour\u2019s worth of marriage preparation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, you know I was just thinking as we talk about marriage today and I talk about a faith relationship and how God sovereignly brings people together and I really felt that about Barbara and Dennis.\u00a0 It\u2019s just great now to look back and just see the confirmation of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA faith relationship, I define that as looking beyond your mate\u2019s weaknesses to God\u2019s sovereignty and promises.\u00a0 By sovereignty, we just mean that God orchestrates the universe and that\u2019s what I felt about Dennis and Barbara that day that was real evidence that God was bringing them together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted them as I encourage other couples and myself today to realize that God is really involved in bringing you together.\u00a0 If you look beyond your mate\u2019s weaknesses to God as the guarantor of your needs, then you don\u2019t need to fear their weaknesses.\u00a0 And then if you begn to concentrate on the promises that follow in God\u2019s word when you are talking about marriage, then you have the hope that in spite of their weaknesses, God can still accomplish your needs and your life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 But we ended up getting engaged at that point and six weeks later, we got married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Six weeks?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Six weeks, that\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCouples take enormous amount of time to get ready for the marriage ceremony but they don\u2019t take a lot of time getting ready for marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Everything in the culture points them in a different direction, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, right here, I have got exhibit A.\u00a0 Now, this is a heavy exhibit.\u00a0 It\u2019s a heavy exhibit.\u00a0 How thick would you say that magazine is, Bob?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 That looks like a --\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Inch and a quarter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Like a medium sized city phone book is what it looks like.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 It does.\u00a0 It\u2019s entitled <em>Modern Bride<\/em> and this is the special issue.\u00a0 I am sure they have a special issue --\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Every issue is a special issue.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Every issue is a special issue, but I had my secretary look through this and do a quick survey at the advertisements, the number of pages around different products in this magazine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 There were advertisements for orchestras, there were advertisements for jewelry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Now, hang on, orchestras?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, one page, just one page on that.\u00a0 There was one page for cigarettes.\u00a0 That\u2019s a dying part of the deal, and perfume and beauty aids, birth control got a page and here we find stationery and invitations, 17 pages.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 It\u2019s a big market for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Big market for that.\u00a0 Champagne and wine got a couple of pages, but are you interested in knowing the top three products that were advertised in <em>Modern Bride<\/em> magazine?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, here they are.\u00a0 In third place, china and silver, not Red China but china.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Nice china, very nice china.\u00a0 It\u2019s expensive let me tell you, been there done that.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSweetheart, we don\u2019t even have a table to eat on and you can eat off paper plates forever for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Destination resorts in second place.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s the only reason I read <em>Bride<\/em> magazine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When we were getting ready?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You read that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 I thumbed through it to look for some honeymoon opportunities.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 No man would read that magazine, 86 pages worth of advertising for destinations and resorts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 For honeymoons, right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd #1, no peer, 301 pages of advertising, this is why it\u2019s so thick, wedding dresses and shoes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 No surprise there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 No surprise there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yes, Bob, there is one advertisement for something we didn\u2019t do but I think it\u2019s a beautiful symbolic picture of releasing your daughter at a wedding.\u00a0 There was actually an ad for butterflies, live butterflies that you could release at the wedding or the reception.\u00a0 Now, I am a gardener and you can buy ladybugs to eat the aphids but this one \u2013 this was pretty cute here, butterflies.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 I just want to see the postman delivering the box of live butterflies.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, me too.\u00a0 And I have got to move to exhibit B for our culture at this point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a cartoon from Cathy.\u00a0 A young man sitting at the table with Cathy turns to her and he says, \u201cWhy, Cathy, did you get so weird?\u00a0 I only asked you to marry me.\u201d\u00a0 He goes on to say, \u201cIf it doesn\u2019t work out, we will get divorced.\u00a0 What\u2019s the big deal?\u00a0 Half the people I know are divorced.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe adds, \u201cLots of my friends look at the first marriage as a trial run anyway.\u00a0 You try as long as you can but then you move on.\u201d\u00a0 And the last frame of the cartoon has Cathy with her eyes crossed thinking goodbye, till death do us part.\u00a0 Hello until couple\u2019s therapy moneyruns out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me suggest three goals for the engagement period.\u00a0 First of all, you need to seal the decision.\u00a0 For some, you are going to need to remake the decision you have made right.\u00a0 Now, that may sound confusing.\u00a0 Some say, \u201cWell, I am already engaged.\u201d\u00a0 Well, have you really gone about making that decision in a biblical fashion?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second goal is to be involved in the process of preparing for marriage.\u00a0 Now, that sounds so simplistic, but preparing for marriage is a process and this process is for all of those who are being impacted by a man and a woman who are about to leave, cleave, and become one flesh.\u00a0 It\u2019s for those who are leaving the young man and the young woman who are forming that relationship.\u00a0 It\u2019s for those who are being left.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe process of preparing for marriage, I believe, ought to be a profound experience for mom and dad as they go through a process of letting go of deciding what this biblical component of allowing your son, allowing your daughter to leave looks like.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the third is to begin to deal with real issues.\u00a0 A lot of couples get married and they \u2013 well how should we say \u2013 they have got stars in their eyes.\u00a0 It has been said, \u201cLove is blind but marriage is an eye opener.\u201d\u00a0 I think you don\u2019t have to wait until marriage to have your eyes opened.\u00a0 One of the problems that occurs is that most family members, most friends are not asking the tough questions that a young couple need to be asking each other and perhaps interacting around as a couple prior to getting married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Now, you can\u2019t wait until you\u2019ve got everything perfect in all of these areas to move ahead.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 You know I am glad you asked that, Bob, because I have counseled I don\u2019t know how many couples and they have such a refined checklist waiting for that perfect person, that prefect situation that they will never get married.\u00a0 I mean they got their rooms, their apartments wallpapered with checklists, and there are no perfect people, there was only one of those and --\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 And he didn\u2019t get married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And he didn\u2019t get married, but we are called by him to marry an imperfect person and frankly, that\u2019s what makes the whole marriage thing go round and round and round.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tProverbs 24, verses 3 and 4 give us a familiar passage, \u201cBy wisdom, a house is built and by understanding it is established and by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, we want the precious and pleasant riches, but many times, we don\u2019t want the process that God gives us from the Bible to achieve that objective.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we have to start with a biblical vision for what a marriage is to be and what it is to look like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am convinced today that we approach marriage much like it is just a two-dimensional institution, body and soul.\u00a0 We ignore the spiritual element that truly makes up a marriage relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we had a goldfish bowl right here in the middle of our table here in the studio and we had two goldfish in the bowl and we took the goldfish out.\u00a0 Immediately, several of our listeners would cringe if they knew we had done that.\u00a0 They would say, \u201cWhy are you doing that?\u00a0 That\u2019s harmful to them.\u201d\u00a0 And if we put them back into the water that\u2019s in goldfish bowl, immediately those fish would begin swimming around and they would be okay, why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause goldfish were made to live in an environment of water.\u00a0 Marriage, like the goldfish, was made to take place in a right relationship with God.\u00a0 It\u2019s a spiritual institution.\u00a0 And the water in the goldfish bowl can be compared to the spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ and with God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you don\u2019t have that, if you are not connected to God vitally, day by day, experiencing him, knowing him, walking with him, having him work in your life and change you, then at that point, I question whether you are truly going to be able to experience marriage as God intended.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So couples don\u2019t just need a vision for how to make a marriage work over time, they need to have a bigger picture of what God intended for marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\u00a0 In fact, marriage in the garden started between a man, a woman and their God.\u00a0 You would have never had a marriage without God creating it.\u00a0 A spiritual being a personal God who has stepped out of eternity in the person of Jesus Christ created marriage.\u00a0 So marriage is a spiritual institution at its core.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCouples today are ignoring the spiritual dimension of their lives hoping to have a successful marriage.\u00a0 It will never happen.\u00a0 And that\u2019s why the Bible is so important. When you go back to Proverbs 24 it talks about \u201cBy wisdom, a house is built,\u201d where are you going to get wisdom, from the world or from God?\u00a0 And if you are going to get it from God, you are going to get it from the scripture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFrankly, one of the places where the Christian community is most missing it is in the process of equipping young couples and in preparing them for the marriage relationship.\u00a0 We spend far more time preparing for the wedding and all the detail surrounding that than we do preparing for the marriage.\u00a0 We spend more money on the wedding dress than we do on marriage preparation and we ought to reverse the process.\u00a0 I know I just went through this.\u00a0 I looked at the budget and I shook my head and I thought you know, there is something terribly wrong about this picture here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMatthew 7 verses 24 through 27 talks about a man who built his house on a foundation.\u00a0 And because of that, when the storms came, the floods pounded him, the rains came, the wind, that house stood.\u00a0 But the house that was built on the sand that didn\u2019t have process, that wasn\u2019t built upon the scripture, that didn\u2019t have an intentional process about it, that house failed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Bob, I think that\u2019s what young couples need to consider today as they begin to venture out towards marriage, how much am I going to commit to truly prepare for my marriage and how am I going to go about doing it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat marriage license that you get on the day of the wedding ceremony doesn\u2019t constitute a marriage.\u00a0 It only gives you the right to begin building a marriage, to being to make a marriage, to make that relationship work.\u00a0 And if you don\u2019t have the blueprints, who is going to tell you how to build, the world, television?\u00a0 Those relationships are failing left and right.\u00a0 The scripture contains the authoritative word of God that gives us the hope that two sinful, selfish human beings can make a permanent covenant called marriage, work.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And this coincides too with the work that we have done recently in putting together a <em>Preparing for Marriage<\/em> workbook that is designed for couples to use either on their own or with a pastor or a counselor or I guess ideally, with an older couple who would step into their lives at this point and be a mentor couple taking them through the <em>Preparing for Marriage<\/em> material.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I would encourage any couple who want to get the maximum value out of some older saints in the church to sit down and begin to pray about who they want to challenge to mentor them and walk them through this process.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFrankly, if I were an engaged couple today, I would say to you target a couple in your church, start praying and then go to them and say, \u201cWould you go through this workbook with us?\u00a0 Would you just coach us as we move through these eight sessions?\u00a0 And would you encourage us in our early months and years of marriage to establish this relationship on the right foundation?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Bob, I think if appropriately approached, there isn\u2019t an older couple who wouldn\u2019t delight in taking a young couple through and teaching them out of their own successes as well as their falures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and if you look at the work that our team has done in the new addition of this workbook, it really makes it very simple for any couple to come alongside a younger couple and take them through the material.\u00a0 I agree with you, I think both couples will profit from that experience.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd of course, we have got the brand new <em>Preparing for Marriage<\/em> workbook revised and updated in our FamilyLife Today Resource Center.\u00a0 You can go online at FamlylifeToday.com for more information about how to get a copy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, it\u2019s FamlylifeToday.com, or call to request a copy 1-800-FL-TODAY is the number, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t1-800-358-6329.
