on a legacy of spiritual vitality to your children.\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk about that today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition.\u00a0 One of the things we\u2019ve talked about many times here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> is the need for there to be\u2014I\u2019m going to use a big word\u2014symbiotic.\u00a0 There needs to be a symbiotic relationship between the family and the local church.\u00a0 Do you like that word?\u00a0 \u201cSymbiotic.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Great word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a great word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a great word.\u00a0 Now, are you going, \u201cBut what exactly does it mean?\u201d\u00a0 Symbiotic\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, I know what it means!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m sorry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It means that you grow off of each other.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s a highly professional definition too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know what, I can think of another symbiotic that generation is not the same generation.\u00a0 This is one of those things where you teenagers might say, \u201cDuh Dad!\u00a0 Duh!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it isn\u2019t.\u00a0 It\u2019s a different generation that has different needs.\u00a0 It needs to be approached differently.\u00a0 But, hear me on this; it needs to be approached biblically.\u00a0 Unapologetically with do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong>\u00a0 I came there as Marriage and Family Pastor.\u00a0 As we began to flesh out our ministry we realized we couldn\u2019t separate it from discipleship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m intrigued by what you say there.\u00a0 You came to do marriage and family and realized that discipleship is integral to that.\u00a0 Just unpack that a little bit for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong>\u00a0 As I went to scripture and looked for answer to \u201cWhat does family ministry look like in the scripture?\u201d\u00a0 I could not separate it from discipleship.\u00a0 I began to see the process of spiritual formation or discipleship is this two sided coin.\u00a0 One is discipleship that takes place at church on campus through the ministries of the church.\u00a0 The other being, and equally as important, what takes place in the home through family as parents being the primary faith influencer, or faith trainer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo to me I couldn\u2019t separate the two.\u00a0 Relating back to your earlier question, that\u2019s why my title became this spiritual formation thing.\u00a0 Because it really is just a formation process that involves church and home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you wrote a book called <em>Shift<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s really an expos\u00e9 of what it\u2019s going to take to finally reach families today.\u00a0 You\u2019re not talking about just reaching families in the church either.\u00a0 Are you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I\u2019m talking about reaching families in the culture.\u00a0 My desire, my hope, my prayer is to see God do something different through the practice of church leaders to drive discipleship into the home.\u00a0 I have this theory; it\u2019s a premise of mine.\u00a0 It just goes like this:\u00a0 all the research out there tends to show that kids walk away from their faith at 18 years old and really they\u2019re not coming back at this point.\u00a0 Why is that?\u00a0 I see that we have the greatest student ministries, the greatest kids\u2019 ministries, the greatest resources of all time in American ecclesiology.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStill they\u2019re walking away.\u00a0 So what\u2019s the missing link?\u00a0 What\u2019s the missing piece?\u00a0 As I look at scripture, I go back to Deuteronomy 6 and I think it\u2019s got to be family.\u00a0 As a pastor I only have that generation 2% of their life.\u00a0 But at home, we have a great opportunity to influence and impact a large percentage of how they live every day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You write in your book that one of the \u201cAha!\u201ds for you came about really through an unexpected encounter with your parents.\u00a0 Who came all the way from North Carolina to Houston to have a conversation with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I lost my mom this past year.\u00a0 She passed away quickly from inoperable brain cancer.\u00a0 In the process of that my brother and I decided we were going to have this no-regrets policy.\u00a0 We were going to say everything to Mom we wanted to say before she passed away, and we had a couple of days to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sat down and we began to pour out our hearts to her.\u00a0 Everything from what mattered when we were kids.\u00a0 I remember her homemade popsicles popped into my head.\u00a0 I started weeping over homemade popsicles.\u00a0 We bantered about some things that mattered; including her legacy in our life: the faith in Christ that she passed down to us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got done and her one question was, \u201cWhat have you done, or what have you taught your daughters\u2014my generation of my family.\u00a0 It was a clicking point for me.\u00a0 I really began to think, this legacy thing, when you come to the end of your life, what matters is what you pass to the next generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, you work as a pastor at a local church.\u00a0 So, not only are you supposed to be doing this as a daddy, but this is a part of your job description.\u00a0 You have your doctorate of ministry from Liberty University right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess the question is, I think there are a lot of folks who don\u2019t have their doctorate of ministry.\u00a0 They never went to a Bible college. They are daddies and mommies and they\u2019re thinking, \u201cOK I know I\u2019m supposed to do that, too.\u00a0 But I\u2019m not exactly sure what I\u2019m supposed to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you\u2019re trying to do at your church is say, \u201cWe recognize that\u2019s the reality for a lot of parents, and we want to come alongside and help you have the confidence and the skill to know what to do in that Deuteronomy 6, every day walk along the way, environment where you find yourself.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 I\u2019ll say two things.\u00a0 One is seminary degrees, I\u2019ve learned, help me zero when it comes to being a dad and husband and all that kind of thing practically.\u00a0 So I tell them all the time, I\u2019m in the same boat you are.\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to figure this thing out as we go along here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut at the same time, at church, we are working hard to develop a common path between church and homes.\u00a0 So that what parents say to their kids the moments that they capture and speak Bible into the lives of their kids, we are echoing at church.\u00a0 What we\u2019re doing is giving parents a roadmap, and they\u2019re all over it.\u00a0 One of the huge obstacles is, \u201cI just don\u2019t feel like I know what to do.\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand what even the next step is.\u00a0 What do I do?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cI didn\u2019t see it growing up in my own home.\u201d\u00a0 Or, \u201cI just don\u2019t have a model.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or, \u201cI\u2019ve heard all the Bible teaching I\u2019ve been in church for all my childhood and adult life, yet no one has condensed down for me and put it in a practical workable form.\u201d\u00a0 You believe the place to begin is authenticity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Explain that to our listeners.\u00a0 Because, I think there are some who are listening to us right now, Bob and they\u2019re going, \u201cWell you\u2019ve clearly established where I am.\u00a0 Where do I start?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I do believe it begins with authenticity.\u00a0 This goes back to the idea of model.\u00a0 No matter what I do in my house to formally train my kids spiritually, if I don\u2019t authentically walk with Christ in front of them, they get no picture of what that looks like.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to walk with them on the great days and on the horrible days when my mom is in the hospital dying; I have to walk with Christ in front of them, and all the days in between.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt does not mean it has to be perfect.\u00a0 It means is needs to be authentic.\u00a0 Sometimes that means the gamut of emotions, honestly.\u00a0 But it means always that we turn to the Lord in prayer and scripture for guidance and where to go next.\u00a0 So I want my kids to see, I don\u2019t think I know the way, but authentically and genuinely I\u2019m going to follow Christ because I know he does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think you\u2019re making a great point here.\u00a0 It\u2019s one that, as I look back on raising my kids, I\u2019m not sure we did this well.\u00a0 When we think about modeling the Christian life for our kids, what I tend to think of is, \u201cI want to put the good stuff on display, and keep the flaws in the closet.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you stop and think about that.\u00a0 If that\u2019s what you display for your kids, then what you\u2019re going to put on display for them is a model that\u2019s a loftier picture than any of us can humanly attain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf all they see is when mom and dad are doing it right and walking in victory and in the power of the Holy Spirit and everything is working well.\u00a0 And they think, well that\u2019s the Christian life.\u00a0 Well, when they mess up, they\u2019re going to go, \u201cSomething must be wrong with me because I messed up.\u201d\u00a0 They need to see you unsure, lacking faith, messing up, seeking forgiveness, confessing your sins.\u00a0 Don\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian: <\/strong>Yes. As they walk along the road, as we lie down, and as we get up; when you have good days and bad days, and all of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, I want to go back, then to what you guys are doing as a church to help moms and dads live this out.\u00a0 Because again, we talked about that symbiotic relationship, how is your church trying to equip moms and dads to live out this authentic Christianity in their home?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We have created a common path made up of seven\u2014what we call legacy milestones.\u00a0 They are just growth points along the way that we celebrate as kids reach them in their spiritual development.\u00a0 We want to teach some core competencies, some central truths into our kids\u2019 lives; beginning at infancy all the way to high school graduation before they leave home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that they can live a life in Christ and we do that a number of ways.\u00a0 One primary way is that we teach parents to have faith-talks.\u00a0 \u201cFaith-talks\u201d is just our Kingsland word for family devotion.\u00a0 We say, \u201cThis is a formal platform that you need to set up in your home to speak the truth of God\u2019s word into your child\u2019s life.\u201d\u00a0 The problem with that becomes, parents really don\u2019t know how to have a faith-talk.\u00a0 They don\u2019t know what to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to do a number of things, simple things like, when our pastor is preaching a sermon series on Philippians, like he is right now, he writes a faith-talk, sticks it in the worship guide every week and holds it up at the end and says, \u201cLook, if you\u2019re not having a faith-talk with your kids, and you\u2019re not sure how to do it, you\u2019ve heard the word of God today, it filled you up.\u00a0 Could you sit around your table and ask these four questions in an age-appropriate way to your kids?\u201d\u00a0 We give them this entry level win.\u00a0 \u201cYes, I can ask four questions.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>OK, give me an illustration of one where your pastor preached a sermon.\u00a0 You took the bulletin home and with your three daughters you did it.\u00a0 Tell us how it went.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And you\u2019d better have an illustration here or the word is going to get around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I do it my own way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve got a feeling that he\u2019ll have an illustration.\u00a0 But here\u2019s what I don\u2019t want.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want the airbrushed illustration.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Paint the picture of what the dinner table was like, if that\u2019s where it occurred.\u00a0 Or the living room, and talk about what the kids were doing as you were attempting to have this faith-talk.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No problem.\u00a0 I have girls, ten, seven and two.\u00a0 So that makes it really interesting.\u00a0 Because, you\u2019ve on the one hand a pre-adolescent, on the other hand you\u2019ve got this two-year-old that\u2019s doing two-year-old things.\u00a0 We are in the process right now of teaching the Lord\u2019s Prayer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re taking one phrase a night.\u00a0 \u201cOur Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be your name.\u201d\u00a0 What does that mean?\u00a0\u00a0 So we come together, we have music, Eden the two-year-old gets to pick the music, because we let her pick the music.\u00a0 No other reason than that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, what would she pick?\u00a0 What kind of a song?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right now, she keeps going to this recorded VBS music that we have from two years ago, \u201cArctic Edge.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She just loves those songs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She wants to hear \u201cArctic Edge\u201d.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re dancing, we\u2019re throwing kids in the air, and we\u2019re just having a good time as a family in our family room.\u00a0 At the end of that, we sit down and we have the oldest one, the ten-year-old read the scripture, whatever the scripture is for the moment.\u00a0\u00a0 Honestly the two-year-old tunes out right about here.\u00a0 She\u2019s there, she\u2019s a part of it, but she\u2019s squirming, she\u2019s got about three minutes and then she\u2019s\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She wants to go back to \u201cArctic Edge.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She does.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know exactly what she\u2019s overhearing and grasping, But the value for her, is she gets the discipline, that this is what we do in our family on Sunday nights.\u00a0 We sit down and we talk about the Word for practicality.\u00a0 So then, my wife and I talk about, what does \u201challowed\u201d mean?\u00a0 What is \u201choly\u201d?\u00a0 What are then names of God?\u00a0 And, how do you pray this in your life?\u00a0 \u201cOur Father in Heaven, holy is your name.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen we say to our seven-year-old, Madeline.\u00a0 \u201cMadeline, you lead the prayer, but you have to pray this verse in your prayer, \u201cOur Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name.\u201d\u00a0 And you have to praise God in that.\u00a0 So, we teach them how to do that and let her close in prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of that might be 20 minutes.\u00a0 But, what we\u2019re finding is, our girls are memorizing scripture that way, they\u2019re learning to pray that way in this particular instance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll tell you what happened at our house.\u00a0 We had some faith-talks, we didn\u2019t call them that, but it was the parents who were in time-out by the time it was over.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve been there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I mean, seriously.\u00a0 Our kids would use peas and something would become a goal-post. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Green peas?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Little peas, they would flip them during the deal.\u00a0 And, we had kids crawling under the table.\u00a0 Truthfully, what you\u2019re saying here is so important, you just have to persevere.\u00a0 In fact Bob, I remember you and I interviewed Elisabeth Elliot and she talked about how these faith-talks\u2014like you\u2019re discussing\u2014were the times where her father and mother taught her family hymns of the faith, taught them scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe found herself, many times as a girl having to endure those times as well.\u00a0 But, when she was older she tapped back in to the main stream of what we\u2019re talking about here, and that\u2019s growth.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking about individuals growing up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The difference is you can have a kid that grows up in a church and gets faith-talks with thirty other kids in rows, one day a week, or you can have kids that grow up in the church and also their family pours into them and they lose this compartmentalized view of Christianity that says, \u201cIt happens inside certain buildings on certain days of the week.\u201d\u00a0 Instead it\u2019s for the everyday of life.\u00a0 So, faith-talk is huge.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I like how you summarize what you\u2019re attempting to do.\u00a0 Because you\u2019re talking about the church equipping families to grow spiritually which, in turn brings that spiritual growth back to the church.\u00a0 That becomes a symbiotic relationship.\u00a0 It really does work that way.\u00a0 I just think parents who are listening to us today, or for that matter couples, the question is where do you start?\u00a0 Where do you begin?\u00a0 For a couple, I\u2019ve got a couple of devotionals that Barbara and I have written.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne, <em>Moments Together for Couples<\/em>, another, <em>Moments With You<\/em>, that can be a great place for a couple just to begin to practice the spiritual discipline of interacting around the scripture, but also talking about how it applies to their lives.\u00a0 Because, they may not be a part of a church like Kingsland there in Katy, Texas, so they are looking for ways they can practically do that.\u00a0 But every couple, every family needs to start somewhere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and I really like the way you have drawn the attention of parents and the attention of churches to these milestones that give us an opportunity for significant engagement.\u00a0 In fact, I have to tell you a story.\u00a0 A friend of mine, just recently he and his wife took their son who is five years old, and they had an overnight at a local hotel because mom is about to have a brand new baby.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo they had an initiation ceremony for this five-year-old preparing him for his new role as an older brother.\u00a0 They spent the weekend having fun, but also teaching him about what it is an older brother does.\u00a0 They gave him a walking stick that has knots in it.\u00a0 Each knot represents a different thing that an older brother does for a little sister.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a powerful moment, a teaching moment that these parents capitalized, it\u2019s one of these milestones like you talk about.\u00a0 You talk about the birth of a baby, or about a faith commitment, or preparing for adolescence, or commitment to purity, passage into adulthood, high school graduation, all of these are milestone moments that we can capitalize on as parents and as churches spiritually.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve outlined a way to do that in the book <em>Shift<\/em>, which we have in our FamilyLife Today Resource Center.\u00a0 If our listeners Brian Haynes\u2019 mother was dying, he remembers there was one question on her lips.\u00a0 One thing she really wanted to know; a question that marked him for life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Her one question was \u201cWhat have you done, or what have you taught your daughters\u2014my grandchildren about the Bible lately?\u201d\u00a0 I remember stopping and just thinking, because, I talk about Deuteronomy six all the time, the Shamah.\u00a0 \u201cAs we walk along the road, and as we lie down, and as we get up\u2026\u201d we have to talk to our kids.\u00a0\u00a0 I just began to weep.\u00a0 I remember thinking, before I even ever heard the Shamah, my mom was praying into my life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was speaking into my life and my heart.\u00a0 She was doing that and in this moment she wanted to know that her faith was going to be a legacy into the next generation of my family.\u00a0 It was a clicking point for me.\u00a0 I really began to think, this legacy thing, where you come to the end of your life <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition.\u00a0 One of the things we\u2019ve talked about many times here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> is the need for there to be\u2014I\u2019m going to use a big word\u2014symbiotic.\u00a0 There needs to be a symbiotic relationship between the family and the local church.\u00a0 Do you like that word?\u00a0 \u201cSymbiotic.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Great word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a great word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a great word.\u00a0 Now, are you going, \u201cBut what exactly does it mean?\u201d\u00a0 Symbiotic\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, I know what it means!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m sorry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It means that you grow off of each other.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s a highly professional definition too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know what, I can think of another symbiotic that generation is not the same generation.\u00a0 This is one of those things where you teenagers might say, \u201cDuh Dad!\u00a0 Duh!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it isn\u2019t.\u00a0 It\u2019s a different generation that has different needs.\u00a0 It needs to be approached differently.\u00a0 But, hear me on this; it needs to be approached biblically.\u00a0 Unapologetically with Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What does that mean you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong>\u00a0 I came there as Marriage and Family Pastor.\u00a0 As we began to flesh out our ministry we realized we couldn\u2019t separate it from discipleship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m intrigued by what you say there.\u00a0 You came to do marriage and family and realized that discipleship is integral to that.\u00a0 Just unpack that a little bit for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong>\u00a0 As I went to scripture and looked for answer to \u201cWhat does family ministry look like in the scripture?\u201d\u00a0 I could not separate it from discipleship.\u00a0 I began to see the process of spiritual formation or discipleship is this two sided coin.\u00a0 One is discipleship that takes place at church on campus through the ministries of the church.\u00a0 The other being, and equally as important, what takes place in the home through family as parents being the primary faith influencer, or faith trainer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo to me I couldn\u2019t separate the two.\u00a0 Relating back to your earlier question, that\u2019s why my title became this spiritual formation thing.\u00a0 Because it really is just a formation process that involves church and home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you wrote a book called <em>Shift<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s really an expos\u00e9 of what it\u2019s going to take to finally reach families today.\u00a0 You\u2019re not talking about just reaching families in the church either.\u00a0 Are you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I\u2019m talking about reaching families in the culture.\u00a0 My desire, my hope, my prayer is to see God do something different through the practice of church leaders to drive discipleship into the home.\u00a0 I have this theory; it\u2019s a premise of mine.\u00a0 It just goes like this:\u00a0 all the research out there tends to show that kids walk away from their faith at 18 years old and really they\u2019re not coming back at this point.\u00a0 Why is that?\u00a0 I see that we have the greatest student ministries, the greatest kids\u2019 ministries, the greatest resources of all time in American ecclesiology.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStill they\u2019re walking away.\u00a0 So what\u2019s the missing link?\u00a0 What\u2019s the missing piece?\u00a0 As I look at scripture, I go back to Deuteronomy 6 and I think it\u2019s got to be family.\u00a0 As a pastor I only have that generation 2% of their life.\u00a0 But at home, we have a great opportunity to influence and impact a large percentage of how they live every day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You write in your book that one of the \u201cAha!\u201ds for you came about really through an unexpected encounter with your parents.\u00a0 Who came all the way from North Carolina to Houston to have a conversation with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I lost my mom this past year.\u00a0 She passed away quickly from inoperable brain cancer.\u00a0 In the process of that my brother and I decided we were going to have this no-regrets policy.\u00a0 We were going to say everything to Mom we wanted to say before she passed away, and we had a couple of days to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sat down and we began to pour out our hearts to her.\u00a0 Everything from what mattered when we were kids.\u00a0 I remember her homemade popsicles popped into my head.\u00a0 I started weeping over homemade popsicles.\u00a0 We bantered about some things that mattered; including her legacy in our life: right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess the question is, I think there are a lot of folks who don\u2019t have their doctorate of ministry.\u00a0 They never went to a Bible college. They are daddies and mommies and they\u2019re thinking, \u201cOK I know I\u2019m supposed to do that, too.\u00a0 But I\u2019m not exactly sure what I\u2019m supposed to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you\u2019re trying to do at your church is say, \u201cWe recognize that\u2019s the reality for a lot of parents, and we want to come alongside and help you have the confidence and the skill to know what to do in that Deuteronomy 6, every day walk along the way, environment where you find yourself.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 I\u2019ll say two things.\u00a0 One is seminary degrees, I\u2019ve learned, help me zero when it comes to being a dad and husband and all that kind of thing practically.\u00a0 So I tell them all the time, I\u2019m in the same boat you are.\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to figure this thing out as we go along here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut at the same time, at church, we are working hard to develop a common path between church and homes.\u00a0 So that what parents say to their kids the moments that they capture and speak Bible into the lives of their kids, we are echoing at church.\u00a0 What we\u2019re doing is giving parents a roadmap, and they\u2019re all over it.\u00a0 One of the huge obstacles is, \u201cI just don\u2019t feel like I know what to do.\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand what even the next step is.\u00a0 What do I do?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cI didn\u2019t see it growing up in my own home.\u201d\u00a0 Or, \u201cI just don\u2019t have a model.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or, \u201cI\u2019ve heard all the Bible teaching I\u2019ve been in church for all my childhood and adult life, yet no one has condensed down for me and put it in a practical workable form.\u201d\u00a0 You believe the place to begin is authenticity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Explain that to our listeners.\u00a0 Because, I think there are some who are listening to us right now, Bob and they\u2019re going, \u201cWell you\u2019ve clearly established where I am.\u00a0 Where do I start?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I do believe it begins with authenticity.\u00a0 This goes back to the idea of model.\u00a0 No matter what I do in my house to formally train my kids spiritually, if I don\u2019t authentically walk with Christ in front of them, they get no picture of what that looks like.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to walk with them on the great days and on the horrible days when my mom is in the hospital dying; I have to walk with Christ in front of them, and all the days in between.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt does not mean it has to be perfect.\u00a0 It means is needs to be authentic.\u00a0 Sometimes that means the gamut of emotions, honestly.\u00a0 But it means always that we turn to the Lord in prayer and scripture for guidance and where to go next.\u00a0 So I want my kids to see, I don\u2019t think I know the way, but authentically and genuinely I\u2019m going to follow Christ because I know he does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think you\u2019re making a great point here.\u00a0 It\u2019s one that, as I look back on raising my kids, I\u2019m not sure we did this well.\u00a0 When we think about modeling the Christian life for our kids, what I tend to think of is, \u201cI want to put the good stuff on display, and keep the flaws in the closet.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you stop and think about that.\u00a0 If that\u2019s what you display for your kids, then what you\u2019re going to put on display for them is a model that\u2019s a loftier picture than any of us can humanly attain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf all they see is when mom and dad are doing it right and walking in victory and in the power of the Holy Spirit and everything is working well.\u00a0 And they think, well that\u2019s the Christian life.\u00a0 Well, when they mess up, they\u2019re going to go, \u201cSomething must be wrong with me because I messed up.\u201d\u00a0 They need to see you unsure, lacking faith, messing up, seeking forgiveness, confessing your sins.\u00a0 Don\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian: <\/strong>Yes. As they walk along the road, as we lie down, and as we get up; when you have good days and bad days, and all of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, I want to go back, then to what you guys are doing as a church to help moms and dads live this out.\u00a0 Because again, we talked about that symbiotic relationship, how is your church trying to equip moms and dads to live out this authentic Christianity in their home?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We have created a common path made up of seven\u2014what we call legacy milestones.\u00a0 They are just growth points along the way that we celebrate as kids reach them in their spiritual development.\u00a0 We want to teach some core competencies, some central truths into our kids\u2019 lives; beginning at infancy all the way to high school graduation before they leave home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that they can live a life in Christ and we do that a number of ways.\u00a0 One primary way is that we teach parents to have faith-talks.\u00a0 \u201cFaith-talks\u201d is just our Kingsland word for family devotion.\u00a0 We say, \u201cThis is a formal platform that you need to set up in your home to speak the truth of God\u2019s word into your child\u2019s life.\u201d\u00a0 The problem with that becomes, parents really don\u2019t know how to have a faith-talk.\u00a0 They don\u2019t know what to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to do a number of things, simple things like, when our pastor is preaching a sermon series on Philippians, like he is right now, he writes a faith-talk, sticks it in the worship guide every week and holds it up at the end and says, \u201cLook, if you\u2019re not having a faith-talk with your kids, and you\u2019re not sure how to do it, you\u2019ve heard the word of God today, it filled you up.\u00a0 Could you sit around your table and ask these four questions in an age-appropriate way to your kids?\u201d\u00a0 We give them this entry level win.\u00a0 \u201cYes, I can ask four questions.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>OK, give me an illustration of one where your pastor preached a sermon.\u00a0 You took the bulletin home and with your three daughters you did it.\u00a0 Tell us how it went.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And you\u2019d better have an illustration here or the word is going to get around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I do it my own way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve got a feeling that he\u2019ll have an illustration.\u00a0 But here\u2019s what I don\u2019t want.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want the airbrushed illustration.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Paint the picture of what the dinner table was like, if that\u2019s where it occurred.\u00a0 Or the living room, and talk about what the kids were doing as you were attempting to have this faith-talk.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No problem.\u00a0 I have girls, ten, seven and two.\u00a0 So that makes it really interesting.\u00a0 Because, you\u2019ve on the one hand a pre-adolescent, on the other hand you\u2019ve got this two-year-old that\u2019s doing two-year-old things.\u00a0 We are in the process right now of teaching the Lord\u2019s Prayer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re taking one phrase a night.\u00a0 \u201cOur Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be your name.\u201d\u00a0 What does that mean?\u00a0\u00a0 So we come together, we have music, Eden the two-year-old gets to pick the music, because we let her pick the music.\u00a0 No other reason than that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, what would she pick?\u00a0 What kind of a song?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right now, she keeps going to this recorded VBS music that we have from two years ago, \u201cArctic Edge.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She just loves those songs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She wants to hear \u201cArctic Edge\u201d.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re dancing, we\u2019re throwing kids in the air, and we\u2019re just having a good time as a family in our family room.\u00a0 At the end of that, we sit down and we have the oldest one, the ten-year-old read the scripture, whatever the scripture is for the moment.\u00a0\u00a0 Honestly the two-year-old tunes out right about here.\u00a0 She\u2019s there, she\u2019s a part of it, but she\u2019s squirming, she\u2019s got about three minutes and then she\u2019s\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She wants to go back to \u201cArctic Edge.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She does.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know exactly what she\u2019s overhearing and grasping, But the value for her, is she gets the discipline, that this is what we do in our family on Sunday nights.\u00a0 We sit down and we talk about the Word for practicality.\u00a0 So then, my wife and I talk about, what does \u201challowed\u201d mean?\u00a0 What is \u201choly\u201d?\u00a0 What are then names of God?\u00a0 And, how do you pray this in your life?\u00a0 \u201cOur Father in Heaven, holy is your name.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen we say to our seven-year-old, Madeline.\u00a0 \u201cMadeline, you lead the prayer, but you have to pray this verse in your prayer, \u201cOur Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name.\u201d\u00a0 And you have to praise God in that.\u00a0 So, we teach them how to do that and let her close in prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of that might be 20 minutes.\u00a0 But, what we\u2019re finding is, our girls are memorizing scripture that way, they\u2019re learning to pray that way in this particular instance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll tell you what happened at our house.\u00a0 We had some faith-talks, we didn\u2019t call them that, but it was the parents who were in time-out by the time it was over.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve been there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I mean, seriously.\u00a0 Our kids would use peas and something would become a goal-post. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Green peas?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Little peas, they would flip them during the deal.\u00a0 And, we had kids crawling under the table.\u00a0 Truthfully, what you\u2019re saying here is so important, you just have to persevere.\u00a0 In fact Bob, I remember you and I interviewed Elisabeth Elliot and she talked about how these faith-talks\u2014like you\u2019re discussing\u2014were the times where her father and mother taught her family hymns of the faith, taught them scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe found herself, many times as a girl having to endure those times as well.\u00a0 But, when she was older she tapped back in to the main stream of what we\u2019re talking about here, and that\u2019s growth.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking about individuals growing up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brian:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The difference is you can have a kid that grows up in a church and gets faith-talks with thirty other kids in rows, one day a week, or you can have kids that grow up in the church and also their family pours into them and they lose this compartmentalized view of Christianity that says, \u201cIt happens inside certain buildings on certain days of the week.\u201d\u00a0 Instead it\u2019s for the everyday of life.\u00a0 So, faith-talk is huge.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I like how you summarize what you\u2019re attempting to do.\u00a0 Because you\u2019re talking about the church equipping families to grow spiritually which, in turn brings that spiritual growth back to the church.\u00a0 That becomes a symbiotic relationship.\u00a0 It really does work that way.\u00a0 I just think parents who are listening to us today, or for that matter couples, the question is where do you start?\u00a0 Where do you begin?\u00a0 For a couple, I\u2019ve got a couple of devotionals that Barbara and I have written.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne, <em>Moments Together for Couples<\/em>, another, <em>Moments With You<\/em>, that can be a great place for a couple just to begin to practice the spiritual discipline of interacting around the scripture, but also talking about how it applies to their lives.\u00a0 Because, they may not be a part of a church like Kingsland there in Katy, Texas, so they are looking for ways they can practically do that.\u00a0 But every couple, every family needs to start somewhere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and I really like the way you have drawn the attention of parents and the attention of churches to these milestones that give us an opportunity for significant engagement.\u00a0 In fact, I have to tell you a story.\u00a0 A friend of mine, just recently he and his wife took their son who is five years old, and they had an overnight at a local hotel because mom is about to have a brand new baby.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo they had an initiation ceremony for this five-year-old preparing him for his new role as an older brother.\u00a0 They spent the weekend having fun, but also teaching him about what it is an older brother does.\u00a0 They gave him a walking stick that has knots in it.\u00a0 Each knot represents a different thing that an older brother does for a little sister.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a powerful moment, a teaching moment that these parents capitalized, it\u2019s one of these milestones like you talk about.\u00a0 You talk about the birth of a baby, or about a faith commitment, or preparing for adolescence, or commitment to purity, passage into adulthood, high school graduation, all of these are milestone moments that we can capitalize on as parents and as churches spiritually.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve outlined a way to do that in the book <em>Shift<\/em>, which we have in our FamilyLife Today Resource Center.\u00a0 If our listeners
