S. Lewis, and his wise words in <em>The Weight of Glory<\/em> that says, \u201cOur problem is not desire, it\u2019s that we don\u2019t desire enough \u2013 we settle for lesser trinkets of sex and alcohol and those kinds of things rather than the full life that God has for us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>God said in his word that He has given us all things.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the key word:\u00a0 To enjoy!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, in the right areas we want you to have a ton of great memories, and you to look back and have a ton of great stories, and road trips, and all nighters, and experiences, and all kinds that ought to be normative.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>for Wednesday, February 24.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk today about what we can do as parents to send our sons and daughters off to college ready for a great experience \u2013 ready to have a lot of the right kind of fun!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today, <\/em>thanks for joining us.\u00a0 This conversation this week is kind of making me want to put back on the letter jacket and head off.\u00a0 I never had a letter jacket!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was in my dreams \u2013 a letter jacket\u2014what was I thinking of there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, you did run the hundred-yard dash fast in high school, but you didn\u2019t run it in college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did but not as fast as the two guys in front of me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We\u2019ve been talking about this week about how we can equip juniors and seniors in high school to go to college on purpose \u2013 to have a vision and a game plan to know how to navigate the currents they\u2019re going to face.\u00a0 We have a brand new video series that Robert Lewis and John Bryson have created that is designed to help Mom\u2019s and Dad\u2019s and youth pastors to equip the next generation to not be a casualty of college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Needs to come with some kind of a discount for Bed, Bath and Beyond as far as I can tell because everybody\u2019s going there before they go to college aren\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They\u2019re spending a lot of money for that, and here\u2019s my point if you\u2019re going to spend as it\u2019s reported $1300 just to prepare for all the physical necessities of college why not spend a whole lot less for a video series that could be far more beneficial.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Robert you have spent the better part of the last couple of years developing, brainstorming, testing, going through all of the motions to get this video series put together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m talking to Dr. Robert Lewis who is the President of LifeReady\u2122.\u00a0 You know what we haven\u2019t explained to listeners that\u2019s what LifeReady is.\u00a0 Give us the overview of what you\u2019re trying to provide for churches?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I\u2019m trying to provide video resources that would empower lay people to do strategic ministry in the critical areas of life.\u00a0 Areas such as parenting, areas such as marriage, manhood, womanhood, and in this case preparing teenagers to succeed in what I think are the most formative years of their life, and that is college.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The college ready DVD curriculum for seniors in high school, and that\u2019s the primary group that\u2019s going to be watching this\u00a0 - this is really part of what you hope will be a whole series of resources for junior high, and high school students right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 We\u2019d love to have a series of video resources that give life skills to these junior high and high school students.\u00a0 One of the first is what I think is one of the most critical and that is to prepare these high school juniors and seniors in going off to college, and knowing how to manage the college maze well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>John Bryson is the teacher on the college ready video series.\u00a0 John is a pastor in Memphis, Tennessee, and for years John you were a college pastor in a college town right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was in Denton, Texas at Denton Bible Church with Tommy Nelson there, and worked with college students there at the University of North Texas for about 11 years, and then college four years myself, so 15 of the last 21 years of my life I\u2019ve spent on a college campus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know you didn\u2019t have any fun with Tommy Nelson \u2013 I know that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, not at all \u2013 not at all!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Not at all \u2013 but college students who want to go to the campus want to have fun.\u00a0 One of the topics you chose John was the subject of fun, and knowing that when we go to college we have to not only have fun but be disciplined to study.\u00a0 What I\u2019m going to do is set a timer here so that we only have a certain amount of time to discuss having fun in college.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wait \u2013 what are you doing here?\u00a0 Setting a timer so we can only talk about fun for so long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am.\u00a0 Well, you know it\u2019s symbolic Bob.\u00a0 If you have fun it\u2019s okay, but there has to be limits to your fun, and then you have to study.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re going to follow the fun discussion with academics.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, my Mom told me we should study first and then have fun but you\u2019re flipping it around and saying have fun first and then study?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I didn\u2019t have your Mother!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, we\u2019re going to have fun first because that was how really honestly some of our kids were.\u00a0 Let\u2019s have the fun first, and then maybe we\u2019ll study.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Probably more realistic Dennis to the real college experience than where you\u2019re coming from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It really is \u2013 no doubt about it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>John, I want to ask you \u2013 it\u2019s a little scary as a parent to think that you\u2019re going to spend a session talking to my perspective college student about having fun because I\u2019m thinking I just want them to know a little bit about that.\u00a0 I want them to be there for the serious stuff.\u00a0 What are you trying to teach high school students about the importance of having fun in college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We really do think it is important!\u00a0 We want them to have the right kinds of fun and really our theme verse or big idea for this session is that you ought to invest part of your time in college, and to make great memories.\u00a0 That college ought to be fun.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur rally verse for this session is John 10:10 and it speaks about the devil being the one that kills, steals, and destroys.\u00a0 But, Jesus came to give us life, and to give it abundantly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we really unpack that and say, \u201cCollege is full of romance and passion and creativity.\u201d\u00a0 We all love that.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a reason millions, and millions, and millions of adults flock back to college campuses on Saturdays, and fall weekends.\u00a0 All of us kind of have this romantic idea about college.\u00a0 So, we really kind of tap into that, try to channel that and try to give them a vision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s the original lie back in Genesis 3 that Satan tries to get Eve originally to think that somehow God\u2019s holding out on her.\u00a0 That somehow God is suppressing them from having the fullest life possible.\u00a0 So, I think it\u2019s actually the original struggle to believe by faith that God has the best possible life for your collegian ever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, what I hear you saying is:\u00a0 Fun is biblical!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Some kids need to hear that because they may have been sold that Christianity was not supposed to be fun, that they couldn\u2019t have a good time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They do!\u00a0 Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, God said in His word that He has given us all things, and here\u2019s the key word to enjoy.\u00a0 I think part of life is a great enjoyment, and the kind of fun that John\u2019s talking about is expanding an adolescent\u2019s vision as they go to college to think of fun in some really big ways, some life changing ways.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn some ways that when college is over they would look back, and they would want to remember those experiences, and even encourage their kids who go to college to have those same kind of big memory making experiences.\u00a0 Not the kind of things that John says that if you take the wrong road you\u2019ll say don\u2019t do what I did when I went to college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think your perspective here is really good.\u00a0 You\u2019re telling students that you\u2019re going to look back on your college years with either some rich memories or some regrets.\u00a0 If you decide on the front side that you want it to be rich memories that will steer you in some different paths than if you\u2019re headed toward regrets.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely, and a lot of it is inspired out of the book of Ecclesiastes which speaks to us really enjoying and embracing life.\u00a0 I think of C. wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, you and Robert went to college together.\u00a0 Your years overlapped a little bit didn\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, did you ever read this newspaper that Dennis keeps talking about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, it wasn\u2019t very well written!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what I said Bob \u2013 I said, \u201cThis guy will never write anything\u201d!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know he\u2019s talked about this newspaper for years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>My eighth grade English teacher said that, too, Robert so you\u2019re in good company.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I just wondered if it had any circulation at all, and you just confirmed that it really didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know but back to the word Robert used\u2014a noble big idea:\u00a0 something to have fun around.\u00a0 I also think of going to Campus Crusades headquarters in San Bernardino, California as a college student, and being paid $50 a month to work all summer to work with young people at the headquarters there, and going on the beach and sharing my faith\u2014those were life altering, faith stretching events that were intensely fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We speak to that, and really no other time in your life will you have three months in the summer, or spring break, Christmas break.\u00a0 We talk about really investing those in some memory making experiences that broaden your horizons and expose you to different people and opportunities, and yes stacking those memory makers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, you\u2019re not taking a session here to point kids toward frivolity.\u00a0 You\u2019re saying there can be purposeful fun, and that\u2019s what you ought to be pursuing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I think it\u2019s a wise parenting initiative to not just play defense but get your kid to play offense.\u00a0 Not just what to reject, but what to pursue, and to give them a vision to pursue the right kind of fun.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s empowering to your kid.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now hold it a second here John did you not tell on this video series \u2013 did memories, but we had some good ones as well so we had a lot of fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of those was?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, you\u2019re going to make me go public with this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes \u2013 come on!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, there was this one day when\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(timer rings)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Saved by the bell!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Isn\u2019t this \u2013 this is just like it.\u00a0 You know it\u2019s time to talk about academics.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In case our listeners weren\u2019t here earlier, you set up today\u2019s program, and said we\u2019re only going to spend half the time talking about fun, and then we have to hit the books, and it just so happened that you were saved by the bell.\u00a0 If folks want to know about your dorm pranks they\u2019re going to have to get the video series.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The perpetrator remains unnamed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right!\u00a0 You know I am excited though that you point students to a proper approach to academics.\u00a0 Most don\u2019t really know how to approach college at this point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, it is amazing that professors on college campuses say 84% of students go into college without any kind of plan.\u00a0 Most parents send their kids to college without any kind of plan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, you\u2019re speaking of what they\u2019re going to do after college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, I\u2019m talking about the academic pursuits of college that\u2019s then going to lead to a career.\u00a0 So, they\u2019re going to college with no sense of what my major is going to be, or my class work is going to be other than just something I\u2019m guessing at.\u00a0 But, it\u2019s really more I guess.\u00a0 It\u2019s just more to get started in college rather than going purposely to college to prepare myself for something after college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, but you know most 18 year olds aren\u2019t really sure what they want to do.\u00a0 They are exploring, and they\u2019re going to change their major three or four times anyway aren\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, no not necessarily, and let me use a good illustration of my son.\u00a0 When my son Mason graduated from high school, and we were talking about college, and a major, and all that he just flat told me Dad, I\u2019m clueless.\u00a0 So, the place we started was to invest some time and money in getting him aptitude and personality testing that\u2019s available that we mention on the video.\u00a0 It was the most amazing thing.\u00a0 We went down together:\u00a0 His Mom and I and he and he went through two days of this aptitude testing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember we sat in the counselor\u2019s office where she began to explain Mason\u2019s personality, his gifting, his aptitudes, and explaining how those fit to some particular majors that then led to some specific careers.\u00a0 As we talked about that, and how that related to Mason personally you could see his eyes light up.\u00a0 All of a sudden he says, I could do that, and I understand that, and they were talking his language.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSuddenly college made sense, and here we are five years later, and my son graduated in small business entrepreneurship and became fluent in Spanish.\u00a0 It was all because the day he started college he knew why he was going to college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and if you have that kind of information you\u2019ll want to get that far enough ahead of time so that as you start looking at colleges not every place has small business entrepreneurship as one of the things you can focus on so if you know what you\u2019re looking for that makes the college selection process that much sharper right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What\u2019s amazing is that most parents \u2013 most \u2013 I\u2019d put in the upper 90% are totally unaware that kind of assessment and aptitude testing is available.\u00a0 What we say is so important to start college on the front end with some clear ideas of why I\u2019m going, what I should be studying, and what careers that could lead to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>John you didn\u2019t have an aptitude test.\u00a0 I think honestly Robert I wish I\u2019d started out college with something like that.\u00a0 It\u2019d been so beneficial to have helped me understand what I was good at but John you actually had to wander onto a baseball field to find your purpose?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did!\u00a0 I remember being at year two into college and kind of feeling that kind of flying blind, I\u2019m not quite sure why I\u2019m here, and kind of had that experience.\u00a0 The one thing my Dad did give me is son you want to do well in school, make good grades, so that you have options.\u00a0 Even if you don\u2019t have it figured out, those first four years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I remember a very specific moment where I was on a baseball field.\u00a0 That was kind of my little oasis because I lived in a dorm all four years.\u00a0 Really just made a contract before the Lord that I was going to do school well as an act of honoring Him even if I wasn\u2019t sure what I was going to do next.\u00a0 I really wanted to connect my academic performance as being an act of worship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember Colossians 3:23 being exposed to me by a guy that was discipling me that I ought to do all things to God\u2019s glory.\u00a0 So, that kind of connected those dots for me as the way I engage my academics is an act of worship, and how my worshiping well in that arena was a turning point for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know I\u2019ve already mentioned this week that my approach to classes when I was in college was get a decent grade so you can pass the class, so you can graduate.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t really focused on learning.\u00a0 In fact I didn\u2019t see the assignment as something that was supposed to engage my thinking to move me in my thinking any place.\u00a0 It was really just here\u2019s the assignment, get the grade, move on, and forget whatever you\u2019ve learned.\u00a0 I\u2019ve looked back so many times, and thought I\u2019d like to retake a couple of those classes because they were teaching stuff I should have been paying attention to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well Bob, and you know what\u2019s interesting is college\u2019s today are making a revenue off of people who have graduated from college, now are moving to retirement, coming back to college, and taking the same classes but now with purpose because they want to learn.\u00a0 But, the thing that robs you from connecting the dots is you can\u2019t answer the question, why!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you default back to your high school experience which is I just take classes because I\u2019m supposed to take classes to get a degree, and then I\u2019ll decide what I want to be.\u00a0 But, that\u2019s not or should not be the college experience.\u00a0 You should have the dots connected. You shouldn\u2019t be sitting as most college students are today with this haunting question in the back of their mind that\u2019s whispering the whole time they\u2019re in Economics, or History.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the question:\u00a0 What\u2019s the point?\u00a0 You don\u2019t know what the point is, and that\u2019s why you have academic sloppiness and lose academic motivation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, if you knew the point was I\u2019m going to finish with this degree that fits my design and motivation for life, and it will lead to these careers that I would enjoy.\u00a0 All of a sudden the motivation goes way up to perform well.\u00a0 That\u2019s the gift we want to give high school students who watch this video series.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>College students need coaching in not only their purpose, and where they\u2019re headed with their education but they also need coaching just to know how to survive the maze when they get a syllabus that\u2019s thicker than any book they\u2019ve ever read in the previous 12 years of school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can pass on my most practical tip of what you do to pass classes \u2013 sit on the front row.\u00a0 Have your son or daughter sit on the front row.\u00a0 It is the difference between a B and a C for me.\u00a0 I made a couple of A\u2019s along the way as well.\u00a0 But, that can be a practical way.\u00a0 What are some others that you talk about in this video series?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, this session\u2019s full of exactly those kinds of tips.\u00a0 There are all kinds of resources available to you.\u00a0 We talk about sitting on the front row.\u00a0 Taking great notes. There\u2019s a tutor lab for every single department in almost every single school, and as soon as you don\u2019t understand a lecture or an assignment go to that tutor lab, get it figured out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason these are tied together well with having fun is because discipline leads to freedom.\u00a0 What we found is if you can be disciplined, do well, go to class everyday, take notes, hit a tutor as soon as you don\u2019t understand something, stay read up, studied up, worked up, you have more margin, freedom to have more fun than anybody on that campus, and do well academically.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know we\u2019ve had the bell ring, and we\u2019ve had some fun, and we\u2019ve talked about academics.\u00a0 I happen to know Robert as you designed this video series that you designed it practically to help a student begin to set some objectives.\u00a0 Explain the workbook and what would happen out of two sessions like we just talked about here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 The students that go through this series all have a workbook where they\u2019re following along with John, and gathering a lot of the data that John presents in the series.\u00a0 But, the most important thing is what he does at the end of every session.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe will give five wise moves, five key tips that if you do those you\u2019ll succeed in that particular topic.\u00a0 Then they are to write down those wise moves on this little spreadsheet, and then between sessions go out and interview parents, or mentors, or friends that they look up to, and ask them for additional wise moves that they can win in that area.\u00a0 Like in empowering friends, or in excelling academically.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen when they finish with those interviews they\u2019re to sit down and kind of reflect on what they\u2019ve heard and then take what they think are the best of those wise moves \u2013 not only from John but from their interviews.\u00a0 Then they start creating a vision for their college experience.\u00a0 So, they go back and we give them what we call the \u201cMy College Vision Page\u201d in the back of their workbook.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey begin to write down the wise moves that they intend to take when they go to college in order to win big in this area.\u00a0 Whether it be empowering friends, excelling academically, dating right, and they write those down.\u00a0 Then they describe themselves if they were to do those wise moves what they\u2019ll look like the day they graduate from college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen they can put that spreadsheet\u2014that \u201cMy College Vision Page\u201d on the face of their computer for the next four years, and use that as a navigating compass so to speak to take them through the college experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I think this is going to be a great tool for youth groups, and parents to be able to equip the next generation.\u00a0 My challenge to Mom\u2019s and Dad\u2019s is to figure out how to get a copy of this, and maybe take it to your youth pastor.\u00a0 Buy it for the church.\u00a0 It can be used for the next five, ten years to equip young people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just think today we have to address the needs of young people before they go to college because we\u2019re losing a generation in the spiritual battle.\u00a0 They\u2019re losing their faith on the college campus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I think of the Christian schools all across the country where this could be part of the senior year curriculum for their graduates.\u00a0 Or just the Mom\u2019s and Dad\u2019s who will want to get a copy of this and invite their sons or daughters friends and parents over \u2013 cook up a pot of chili, crack out the DVD\u2019s, and say, \u201cLet\u2019s watch this together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe point is let\u2019s start equipping these young people; school, but you didn\u2019t run it in college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did but not as fast as the two guys in front of me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We\u2019ve been talking about this week about how we can equip juniors and seniors in high school to go to college on purpose \u2013 to have a vision and a game plan to know how to navigate the currents they\u2019re going to face.\u00a0 We have a brand new video series that Robert Lewis and John Bryson have created that is designed to help Mom\u2019s and Dad\u2019s and youth pastors to equip the next generation to not be a casualty of college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Needs to come with some kind of a discount for Bed, Bath and Beyond as far as I can tell because everybody\u2019s going there before they go to college aren\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They\u2019re spending a lot of money for that, and here\u2019s my point if you\u2019re going to spend as it\u2019s reported $1300 just to prepare for all the physical necessities of college why not spend a whole lot less for a video series that could be far more beneficial.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Robert you have spent the better part of the last couple of years developing, brainstorming, testing, going through all of the motions to get this video series put together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m talking to Dr. Robert Lewis who is the President of LifeReady\u2122.\u00a0 You know what we haven\u2019t explained to listeners that\u2019s what LifeReady is.\u00a0 Give us the overview of what you\u2019re trying to provide for churches?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I\u2019m trying to provide video resources that would empower lay people to do strategic ministry in the critical areas of life.\u00a0 Areas such as parenting, areas such as marriage, manhood, womanhood, and in this case preparing teenagers to succeed in what I think are the most formative years of their life, and that is college.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The college ready DVD curriculum for seniors in high school, and that\u2019s the primary group that\u2019s going to be watching this\u00a0 - this is really part of what you hope will be a whole series of resources for junior high, and high school students right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 We\u2019d love to have a series of video resources that give life skills to these junior high and high school students.\u00a0 One of the first is what I think is one of the most critical and that is to prepare these high school juniors and seniors in going off to college, and knowing how to manage the college maze well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>John Bryson is the teacher on the college ready video series.\u00a0 John is a pastor in Memphis, Tennessee, and for years John you were a college pastor in a college town right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was in Denton, Texas at Denton Bible Church with Tommy Nelson there, and worked with college students there at the University of North Texas for about 11 years, and then college four years myself, so 15 of the last 21 years of my life I\u2019ve spent on a college campus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know you didn\u2019t have any fun with Tommy Nelson \u2013 I know that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, not at all \u2013 not at all!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Not at all \u2013 but college students who want to go to the campus want to have fun.\u00a0 One of the topics you chose John was the subject of fun, and knowing that when we go to college we have to not only have fun but be disciplined to study.\u00a0 What I\u2019m going to do is set a timer here so that we only have a certain amount of time to discuss having fun in college.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wait \u2013 what are you doing here?\u00a0 Setting a timer so we can only talk about fun for so long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am.\u00a0 Well, you know it\u2019s symbolic Bob.\u00a0 If you have fun it\u2019s okay, but there has to be limits to your fun, and then you have to study.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re going to follow the fun discussion with academics.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, my Mom told me we should study first and then have fun but you\u2019re flipping it around and saying have fun first and then study?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I didn\u2019t have your Mother!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, we\u2019re going to have fun first because that was how really honestly some of our kids were.\u00a0 Let\u2019s have the fun first, and then maybe we\u2019ll study.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Probably more realistic Dennis to the real college experience than where you\u2019re coming from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It really is \u2013 no doubt about it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>John, I want to ask you \u2013 it\u2019s a little scary as a parent to think that you\u2019re going to spend a session talking to my perspective college student about having fun because I\u2019m thinking I just want them to know a little bit about that.\u00a0 I want them to be there for the serious stuff.\u00a0 What are you trying to teach high school students about the importance of having fun in college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We really do think it is important!\u00a0 We want them to have the right kinds of fun and really our theme verse or big idea for this session is that you ought to invest part of your time in college, and to make great memories.\u00a0 That college ought to be fun.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur rally verse for this session is John 10:10 and it speaks about the devil being the one that kills, steals, and destroys.\u00a0 But, Jesus came to give us life, and to give it abundantly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we really unpack that and say, \u201cCollege is full of romance and passion and creativity.\u201d\u00a0 We all love that.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a reason millions, and millions, and millions of adults flock back to college campuses on Saturdays, and fall weekends.\u00a0 All of us kind of have this romantic idea about college.\u00a0 So, we really kind of tap into that, try to channel that and try to give them a vision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s the original lie back in Genesis 3 that Satan tries to get Eve originally to think that somehow God\u2019s holding out on her.\u00a0 That somehow God is suppressing them from having the fullest life possible.\u00a0 So, I think it\u2019s actually the original struggle to believe by faith that God has the best possible life for your collegian ever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, what I hear you saying is:\u00a0 Fun is biblical!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Some kids need to hear that because they may have been sold that Christianity was not supposed to be fun, that they couldn\u2019t have a good time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They do!\u00a0 Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, God said in His word that He has given us all things, and here\u2019s the key word to enjoy.\u00a0 I think part of life is a great enjoyment, and the kind of fun that John\u2019s talking about is expanding an adolescent\u2019s vision as they go to college to think of fun in some really big ways, some life changing ways.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn some ways that when college is over they would look back, and they would want to remember those experiences, and even encourage their kids who go to college to have those same kind of big memory making experiences.\u00a0 Not the kind of things that John says that if you take the wrong road you\u2019ll say don\u2019t do what I did when I went to college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think your perspective here is really good.\u00a0 You\u2019re telling students that you\u2019re going to look back on your college years with either some rich memories or some regrets.\u00a0 If you decide on the front side that you want it to be rich memories that will steer you in some different paths than if you\u2019re headed toward regrets.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely, and a lot of it is inspired out of the book of Ecclesiastes which speaks to us really enjoying and embracing life.\u00a0 I think of C. S. Lewis and his wise words in <em>The Weight of Glory<\/em> that says our problem is not desire; it\u2019s that we don\u2019t desire enough.\u00a0 We don\u2019t really desire God\u2019s best for our lives enough.\u00a0 We settle for lesser trinkets of sex and alcohol, and those kinds of things rather than the full life that God has for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it\u2019s those underpinnings that really inspired this session, and yes in the right areas we want you to have a ton of great memories.\u00a0 You ought to look back and have a ton of great stories, and road trips, and all-nighter\u2019s and experiences and that ought to be normative.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of my favorite memories around having fun was publishing an underground Christian newspaper with a young lady who became my wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, you and Robert went to college together.\u00a0 Your years overlapped a little bit didn\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, did you ever read this newspaper that Dennis keeps talking about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, it wasn\u2019t very well written!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what I said Bob \u2013 I said, \u201cThis guy will never write anything\u201d!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know he\u2019s talked about this newspaper for years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>My eighth grade English teacher said that, too, Robert so you\u2019re in good company.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I just wondered if it had any circulation at all, and you just confirmed that it really didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know but back to the word Robert used\u2014a noble big idea:\u00a0 something to have fun around.\u00a0 I also think of going to Campus Crusades headquarters in San Bernardino, California as a college student, and being paid $50 a month to work all summer to work with young people at the headquarters there, and going on the beach and sharing my faith\u2014those were life altering, faith stretching events that were intensely fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We speak to that, and really no other time in your life will you have three months in the summer, or spring break, Christmas break.\u00a0 We talk about really investing those in some memory making experiences that broaden your horizons and expose you to different people and opportunities, and yes stacking those memory makers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, you\u2019re not taking a session here to point kids toward frivolity.\u00a0 You\u2019re saying there can be purposeful fun, and that\u2019s what you ought to be pursuing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I think it\u2019s a wise parenting initiative to not just play defense but get your kid to play offense.\u00a0 Not just what to reject, but what to pursue, and to give them a vision to pursue the right kind of fun.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s empowering to your kid.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now hold it a second here John did you not tell on this video series \u2013 did you not talk about some dorm pranks?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I did \u2013 I did!\u00a0 I have my share of them, and stories that were bad memories, but we had some good ones as well so we had a lot of fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of those was?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, you\u2019re going to make me go public with this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes \u2013 come on!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, there was this one day when\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(timer rings)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Saved by the academics.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In case our listeners weren\u2019t here earlier, you set up today\u2019s program, and said we\u2019re only going to spend half the time talking about fun, and then we have to hit the books, and it just so happened that you were saved by the bell.\u00a0 If folks want to know about your dorm pranks they\u2019re going to have to get the video series.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The perpetrator remains unnamed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right!\u00a0 You know I am excited though that you point students to a proper approach to academics.\u00a0 Most don\u2019t really know how to approach college at this point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, it is amazing that professors on college campuses say 84% of students go into college without any kind of plan.\u00a0 Most parents send their kids to college without any kind of plan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, you\u2019re speaking of what they\u2019re going to do after college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, I\u2019m talking about the academic pursuits of college that\u2019s then going to lead to a career.\u00a0 So, they\u2019re going to college with no sense of what my major is going to be, or my class work is going to be other than just something I\u2019m guessing at.\u00a0 But, it\u2019s really more I guess.\u00a0 It\u2019s just more to get started in college rather than going purposely to college to prepare myself for something after college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, but you know most 18 year olds aren\u2019t really sure what they want to do.\u00a0 They are exploring, and they\u2019re going to change their major three or four times anyway aren\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, no not necessarily, and let me use a good illustration of my son.\u00a0 When my son Mason graduated from high school, and we were talking about college, and a major, and all that he just flat told me Dad, I\u2019m clueless.\u00a0 So, the place we started was to invest some time and money in getting him aptitude and personality testing that\u2019s available that we mention on the video.\u00a0 It was the most amazing thing.\u00a0 We went down together:\u00a0 His Mom and I and he and he went through two days of this aptitude testing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember we sat in the counselor\u2019s office where she began to explain Mason\u2019s personality, his gifting, his aptitudes, and explaining how those fit to some particular majors that then led to some specific careers.\u00a0 As we talked about that, and how that related to Mason personally you could see his eyes light up.\u00a0 All of a sudden he says, I could do that, and I understand that, and they were talking his language.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSuddenly college made sense, and here we are five years later, and my son graduated in small business entrepreneurship and became fluent in Spanish.\u00a0 It was all because the day he started college he knew why he was going to college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and if you have that kind of information you\u2019ll want to get that far enough ahead of time so that as you start looking at colleges not every place has small business entrepreneurship as one of the things you can focus on so if you know what you\u2019re looking for that makes the college selection process that much sharper right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What\u2019s amazing is that most parents \u2013 most \u2013 I\u2019d put in the upper 90% are totally unaware that kind of assessment and aptitude testing is available.\u00a0 What we say is so important to start college on the front end with some clear ideas of why I\u2019m going, what I should be studying, and what careers that could lead to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>John you didn\u2019t have an aptitude test.\u00a0 I think honestly Robert I wish I\u2019d started out college with something like that.\u00a0 It\u2019d been so beneficial to have helped me understand what I was good at but John you actually had to wander onto a baseball field to find your purpose?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did!\u00a0 I remember being at year two into college and kind of feeling that kind of flying blind, I\u2019m not quite sure why I\u2019m here, and kind of had that experience.\u00a0 The one thing my Dad did give me is son you want to do well in school, make good grades, so that you have options.\u00a0 Even if you don\u2019t have it figured out, those first four years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I remember a very specific moment where I was on a baseball field.\u00a0 That was kind of my little oasis because I lived in a dorm all four years.\u00a0 Really just made a contract before the Lord that I was going to do school well as an act of honoring Him even if I wasn\u2019t sure what I was going to do next.\u00a0 I really wanted to connect my academic performance as being an act of worship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember Colossians 3:23 being exposed to me by a guy that was discipling me that I ought to do all things to God\u2019s glory.\u00a0 So, that kind of connected those dots for me as the way I engage my academics is an act of worship, and how my worshiping well in that arena was a turning point for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know I\u2019ve already mentioned this week that my approach to classes when I was in college was get a decent grade so you can pass the class, so you can graduate.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t really focused on learning.\u00a0 In fact I didn\u2019t see the assignment as something that was supposed to engage my thinking to move me in my thinking any place.\u00a0 It was really just here\u2019s the assignment, get the grade, move on, and forget whatever you\u2019ve learned.\u00a0 I\u2019ve looked back so many times, and thought I\u2019d like to retake a couple of those classes because they were teaching stuff I should have been paying attention to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well Bob, and you know what\u2019s interesting is college\u2019s today are making a revenue off of people who have graduated from college, now are moving to retirement, coming back to college, and taking the same classes but now with purpose because they want to learn.\u00a0 But, the thing that robs you from connecting the dots is you can\u2019t answer the question, why!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you default back to your high school experience which is I just take classes because I\u2019m supposed to take classes to get a degree, and then I\u2019ll decide what I want to be.\u00a0 But, that\u2019s not or should not be the college experience.\u00a0 You should have the dots connected. You shouldn\u2019t be sitting as most college students are today with this haunting question in the back of their mind that\u2019s whispering the whole time they\u2019re in Economics, or History.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the question:\u00a0 What\u2019s the point?\u00a0 You don\u2019t know what the point is, and that\u2019s why you have academic sloppiness and lose academic motivation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, if you knew the point was I\u2019m going to finish with this degree that fits my design and motivation for life, and it will lead to these careers that I would enjoy.\u00a0 All of a sudden the motivation goes way up to perform well.\u00a0 That\u2019s the gift we want to give high school students who watch this video series.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>College students need coaching in not only their purpose, and where they\u2019re headed with their education but they also need coaching just to know how to survive the maze when they get a syllabus that\u2019s thicker than any book they\u2019ve ever read in the previous 12 years of school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can pass on my most practical tip of what you do to pass classes \u2013 sit on the front row.\u00a0 Have your son or daughter sit on the front row.\u00a0 It is the difference between a B and a C for me.\u00a0 I made a couple of A\u2019s along the way as well.\u00a0 But, that can be a practical way.\u00a0 What are some others that you talk about in this video series?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, this session\u2019s full of exactly those kinds of tips.\u00a0 There are all kinds of resources available to you.\u00a0 We talk about sitting on the front row.\u00a0 Taking great notes. There\u2019s a tutor lab for every single department in almost every single school, and as soon as you don\u2019t understand a lecture or an assignment go to that tutor lab, get it figured out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason these are tied together well with having fun is because discipline leads to freedom.\u00a0 What we found is if you can be disciplined, do well, go to class everyday, take notes, hit a tutor as soon as you don\u2019t understand something, stay read up, studied up, worked up, you have more margin, freedom to have more fun than anybody on that campus, and do well academically.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know we\u2019ve had the bell ring, and we\u2019ve had some fun, and we\u2019ve talked about academics.\u00a0 I happen to know Robert as you designed this video series that you designed it practically to help a student begin to set some objectives.\u00a0 Explain the workbook and what would happen out of two sessions like we just talked about here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 The students that go through this series all have a workbook where they\u2019re following along with John, and gathering a lot of the data that John presents in the series.\u00a0 But, the most important thing is what he does at the end of every session.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe will give five wise moves, five key tips that if you do those you\u2019ll succeed in that particular topic.\u00a0 Then they are to write down those wise moves on this little spreadsheet, and then between sessions go out and interview parents, or mentors, or friends that they look up to, and ask them for additional wise moves that they can win in that area.\u00a0 Like in empowering friends, or in excelling academically.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen when they finish with those interviews they\u2019re to sit down and kind of reflect on what they\u2019ve heard and then take what they think are the best of those wise moves \u2013 not only from John but from their interviews.\u00a0 Then they start creating a vision for their college experience.\u00a0 So, they go back and we give them what we call the \u201cMy College Vision Page\u201d in the back of their workbook.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey begin to write down the wise moves that they intend to take when they go to college in order to win big in this area.\u00a0 Whether it be empowering friends, excelling academically, dating right, and they write those down.\u00a0 Then they describe themselves if they were to do those wise moves what they\u2019ll look like the day they graduate from college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen they can put that spreadsheet\u2014that \u201cMy College Vision Page\u201d on the face of their computer for the next four years, and use that as a navigating compass so to speak to take them through the college experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I think this is going to be a great tool for youth groups, and parents to be able to equip the next generation.\u00a0 My challenge to Mom\u2019s and Dad\u2019s is to figure out how to get a copy of this, and maybe take it to your youth pastor.\u00a0 Buy it for the church.\u00a0 It can be used for the next five, ten years to equip young people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just think today we have to address the needs of young people before they go to college because we\u2019re losing a generation in the spiritual battle.\u00a0 They\u2019re losing their faith on the college campus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I think of the Christian schools all across the country where this could be part of the senior year curriculum for their graduates.\u00a0 Or just the Mom\u2019s and Dad\u2019s who will want to get a copy of this and invite their sons or daughters friends and parents over \u2013 cook up a pot of chili, crack out the DVD\u2019s, and say, \u201cLet\u2019s watch this together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe point is let\u2019s start equipping these young people;
