\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition.\u00a0 You know last year it was about this time that we first heard about the National Bible Bee.\u00a0 I thought that sounds like it could be a really cool event.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it was!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a really cool event!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was very cool!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about the plans for the Bible Bee this year but at the beginning of each program here in 2010 during the month of January we\u2019re encouraging our listeners to do a little Bible reading of their own right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right and what better day to do that when we\u2019re talking about the Bible Bee than to get people in the Bible themselves.\u00a0 Today\u2019s reading is from our book:<em> Moments With You<\/em> and it\u2019s a daily devotional for couples.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tToday it\u2019s all about Ephesians 5:29, and every man who\u2019s listening to the broadcast ought to know what this verse says, \u201cHe who loves his own wife loves himself, for no one ever hated his own flesh but nourishes and cherishes it just as Christ also does the church.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, there are two words in there that men need to get.\u00a0 One is nourish and the other is cherish.\u00a0 Nourish means to feed, it means to cultivate so it will grow \u2013 that\u2019s a husbands assignment with his wife \u2013 to help her grow spiritually; emotionally \u2013 to help her become the woman God designed her to be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow the guys are going to really like the word cherish Bob because if you take this word literally it means to warm up.\u00a0 So, it means give her a hug and warm her up.\u00a0 But, it also means to help create a teachable heart so that she\u2019ll grow and become that woman that I was talking about earlier.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, we\u2019ve been encouraging listeners to take a passage like each day like you\u2019re describing, that\u2019s pretty easy to do compared to what some of the teenagers we met last year did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, I have to tell you I expected a great event, but it really was even better than I expected.\u00a0 What was so impressive was to meet young people who had memorized not just hundreds of verses, but thousands of passages of scripture and recited them perfectly \u2013 word perfectly in front of a live audience of a thousand people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, what we\u2019re talking about is the first annual National Bible Bee that was held in Washington, D.C. back in November.\u00a0 You and I were both there to be a part of the event, and the kids who competed \u2013 all of them were winners because of how much of God\u2019s word they hid away in their hearts.\u00a0 I know it sounds trivial to say all of them were winners because in the end there were some winners.\u00a0 In fact in the elementary division there was a young lady from I think the Kansas City area who was the elementary winner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Speaker:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And the grand prize of $25,000 goes to Rebecca Horning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Cute little girl \u2013 yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>A rich, cute little girl!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There was a young man from upstate New York who was the winner in the middle school division.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He won $50,000!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Speaker:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And the grand prize of $50,000 goes to Isaac Ward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Then there was a young man in the senior division who was from West Virginia.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Speaker:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The grand prize of $100,000 goes to Daniel Stanton.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Then there was second and third place winners as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What I want our listeners to kind of get a picture of here \u2013 this is a first class national competition:\u00a0 It\u2019s the National Bible Bee.\u00a0 We\u2019re coming up on the second one now that will be \u2013 well, they\u2019re now signing folks up to my understanding \u2013 is that right Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I think they are getting the information packets out to everybody, and the deadline to register is later on this spring.\u00a0 Then the regional competition will take place early in the fall, and the nationals will be held again later in the fall.\u00a0 I think the second week in November, and we have all the information on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the organizations that we partnered with in helping to promote The National Bible Bee is Patrick Henry College which is about an hour outside of Washington, D.C. in Virginia.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how many of our listeners know this, but the Chancellor at Patrick Henry College in addition to being Chancellor is also the star of a major motion picture \u2013 did you know that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did not know that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I have seen <em>Come What May<\/em> that Dr. Farris appears in playing Dr. Farris right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, well let\u2019s introduce Michael Farris joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>I didn\u2019t ask for your autograph when you came in though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, it would decrease the value of whatever I signed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, he does join us and he is one of the key leaders in The National Bible Bee that we talked about here a year ago.\u00a0 I just have to ask you Michael now looking back over the past year and what happened \u2013 what do you think \u2013 you excited?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was thrilling.\u00a0 It\u2019s bigger, better, and more important than we ever imagined.\u00a0 You know there\u2019s some idea and you have a pretty good idea that it\u2019s going to be of certain scope.\u00a0 The scope of this was beyond what we could ask or think.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way with God\u2019s word \u2013 it\u2019s always beyond what we could ask or think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I have to tell you what happened.\u00a0 Both Bob and I participated in the Bible Bee, and as I was leading the junior\u2019s which is approximately Junior High age category, one of the judges came up and he said, \u201cI was listening to <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>in Central Wisconsin.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI was on my way back from a job interview but I was so excited about the National Bible Bee that I pulled over to the side of the road, wrote down all the information that Dr. Farris gave us about how we could get involved, and I came home and my wife asked me how\u2019d the job interview go?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he said, \u201cForget the job interview, let me tell you about what\u2019s going on with <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>and the National Bible Bee and what Michael Farris talked about.\u201d\u00a0 They got all excited, and he became a key leader, a key volunteer in Wisconsin for this, and ultimately became a judge back at the national event in Washington, D.C., and he was really excited.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to tell you what surprised me as I was at the event.\u00a0 I had envisioned that students would come up, and they\u2019d be given a verse that they would have to recite.\u00a0 So, someone would say okay, Philippians 2:3, and they\u2019d recite Philippians 2:3.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, when I got to the event I found out it wasn\u2019t Philippians 2:3.\u00a0 It was Philippians 2:1-18.\u00a0 I mean these were students \u2013 some of the winners they had memorized huge chunks of scripture:\u00a0 Entire Psalms, entire chapters of the Bible.\u00a0 It was amazing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was indeed.\u00a0 It was a lot to memorize, and we may have to vary that a little bit to make it more approachable for the young people that we wanted to participate.\u00a0 Because, it\u2019s not just about getting the final three!\u00a0 Our real emphasis was on the 17,000 that started off.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was a young person, I was involved with a group that memorized scripture called:\u00a0 King\u2019s Sons.\u00a0 It was kind of a precursor of Awana, and I memorized probably over five or six years several hundred verses \u2013 nothing like these kids have memorized for The Bible Bee.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNone the less, God continues to bring fruit to that, and there are passages today.\u00a0 When I was listening to these kids back in November and hearing them recite some of it started coming back to me.\u00a0 God has used it in my life and I know He will multiply it immensely in their lives because they memorized so much more.\u00a0 The more scripture you have the more benefit you get.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You mentioned Awana.\u00a0 In this year\u2019s competition Awana is partnered with the Bible Bee.\u00a0 That should bring lots of new Bible Bee contestants shouldn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s going to bring tens of thousands of new contestants.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know one of the reasons for the success you had last year that I know you\u2019re going to desperately need this year are volunteers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We need volunteers to help with local bees.\u00a0 We need volunteers to help at the national.\u00a0 It\u2019s really a challenging thing to get about 200 volunteers to show up in Washington, D.C. at 7:30 in the morning with all the traffic and all the problems there are.\u00a0 The Lord was good to us last year in that contest but we need His people to respond to the call this year as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Michael thanks for being with us today.\u00a0 We want to turn our attention, and introduce our listeners to a couple other guests who are joining us.\u00a0 You know folks who heard about the sister Holly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, Shelby was an amazing person.\u00a0 I mean she was an amazing sister to me, and to all of us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Was she the oldest of how many children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There were 13 children!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thirteen children and she\u2019s the oldest is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, she\u2019s the oldest of my parents, but they adopted nine children so after the adoption she was number seven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay, hold on a moment.\u00a0 We have to reel this back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think we need to go to Mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Debbie, tell us how this family got built.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, Shelby was our first birth child.\u00a0 We had Shelby and then Holly, and then we started adopting as we were having birth children.\u00a0 So, we wound up with four birth children, and nine adopted children.\u00a0 In birth order Shelby was number seven even though she was our first born. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay, you\u2019re already now a hero with Dennis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We can continue talking about this, and trust me I\u2019m restraining myself not to go down the road of all the adoptions and hear more about that.\u00a0 But, Shelby from the very beginning seemed to be set apart for something very special.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You are right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She had a love for the Lord that was very contagious to anybody around her.\u00a0 She spent hours where she would go on long walks and take her Bible, and sit and read.\u00a0 She was obsessed with the scripture \u2013 in knowing it, and she just had this enthusiasm for life that was different.\u00a0 She was kind of the motivational speaker of the family you could say that when any of us were struggling or down she would take us on a walk \u2013 that was her thing.\u00a0 She\u2019d take us on a walk and we would discuss the issues with her, and she would talk us through it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Debbie, how old was Shelby when you first learned there was something wrong?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She was twenty-two when she got sick.\u00a0 It was right at the time Holly and Mike had got married.\u00a0 So, she started having pain but we didn\u2019t think much of it because she was a very healthy girl.\u00a0 She ate health food, and exercised, and those kinds of things so we weren\u2019t suspicious of any cancer \u2013 we didn\u2019t go that route.\u00a0 We were thinking she had a pinched nerve, something wrong in her back, or you know and she was trying to check on it that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe went to several doctors and chiropractors trying to figure out what it was, and it slowly I guess from April to October is when she was actually diagnosed it was getting worse and worse.\u00a0 She started limping more where it was becoming more obvious that there was actually a big tumor on her leg.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When did you get that diagnosis, and just take us to that day will you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay!\u00a0 On October 8, 2004 we found out that she had Leiomyosarcoma.\u00a0 It was a big word, and we\u2019d never heard of anything like that.\u00a0 They told us it was very serious there was not much they could do in San Antonio.\u00a0 One doctor even suggested that she not do anything.\u00a0 But, we thought well, that\u2019s kind of gloomy and Shelby didn\u2019t want to be down or she wanted to be hopeful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we went to Houston, and they had worked with Leiosarcoma there some, and so you know by having a little bit of hope there we started chemo, and went through MD Anderson.\u00a0 I think she did six rounds of chemo and it didn\u2019t seem to do any good.\u00a0 We progressively got worse from the beginning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It had to just knock the wind out of you to hear a doctor say, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t do anything.\u201d\u00a0 I mean that kind of a diagnosis every parent thinks, no!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There has to be hope \u2013 right!\u00a0 We were very hopeful.\u00a0 Shelby was very hopeful.\u00a0 But I do believe she was very realistic and knew.\u00a0 I think she was better prepared than the rest of us were.\u00a0 Even afterwards of course looking back at things there were things she had done, and said that it was like God had prepared her so much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn her door she had painted things before she ever got sick about suffering for Christ.\u00a0 I can\u2019t remember what all they were but it really impacted us after everything happened.\u00a0 She had read a lot of books about Christian martyrs, and that sort of thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe just was very strong spiritually and physically as long as she could be.\u00a0 She tried to be very strong.\u00a0 She always could bring up her countenance when people came, and she always tried to be encouraging but we knew she was in a lot of pain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Even near the end she was ministering from a wheelchair?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, she was in a wheelchair.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She still had a very positive attitude about the whole thing.\u00a0 She was very positive in just sharing Christ with the nurses and doctors, and it was amazing her attitude through all of it.\u00a0 She was actually encouraging us when we felt like we should be encouraging her but we were just so desperate.\u00a0 We just felt traumatized and she was the one trying to lift us up and encourage us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Holly, you had to feel like you were losing your best friend didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did \u2013 yes!\u00a0 It was very traumatizing.\u00a0 I had lots of questions and I think I had to come to the conclusion that those questions couldn\u2019t be answered.\u00a0 God could show me someday Himself because there aren\u2019t answers to all the questions of the why.\u00a0 I still don\u2019t know why and it will never make sense because she was an amazing person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe testimony she left behind has been very beautiful though, and it has been encouraging to see God work through her life now that she has left a legacy.\u00a0 One of her favorite songs was by Nichole Nordeman called <em>Legacy.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 She wanted to leave a legacy and leave a mark on things.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting because she did and that was her favorite song before she was diagnosed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe would go on rocks and she would throw a rock in the water and we\u2019d see the ripple effect and she would tell me she wanted that to be her life.\u00a0 It has been her life.\u00a0 It\u2019s been encouraging seeing how the Lord has used her life now that she\u2019s gone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You don\u2019t have any way of knowing this but that song you just mentioned \u2013 we\u2019ve played that numerous times here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think we\u2019re going to play it before the broadcast is over today because it does really talk about how we need to be passing it on, and influencing others.\u00a0 That\u2019s really what I wanted to ask you Debbie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow did this foundation come about on behalf of your daughter that has now become a National Bible Bee?\u00a0 Here you had a daughter who lived her life for Christ \u2013 did you ever in your wildest imaginations believe there would be a foundation set up in her honor that has sponsored a nationwide effort to get tens of thousands of children memorizing scripture?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, I had no idea.\u00a0 Let me just say Shelby loved children, and she loved the word.\u00a0 So, this is so amazing that the two have come together, and to watch all that\u2019s been going into it.\u00a0 But, no I never envisioned that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was at Shelby\u2019s memorial service, and a very dear friend, and brother in the Lord was there at the service and it was like the Lord gave him a vision for this in just a minute or two during her service.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have any idea that had happened.\u00a0 He came to us a little bit later and talked to us about it and asked what we thought.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just way over our head as far as can\u2019t even imagine.\u00a0 We thought, yes, that sounds really neat, and exciting and it would be just a blessing.\u00a0 It would be something that Shelby would very much be excited by.\u00a0 So, that\u2019s where it got started.\u00a0 He prayed about it and we prayed.\u00a0 Then other people were talked to and so it kind of slowly came together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, Holly, you talk about the ripples of a life and I think of the 17,000 kids last year who participated in the first National Bible Bee.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how many thousands who will participate this year.\u00a0 How many hundreds of thousands of Bible verses are being tucked away in hearts \u2013 that\u2019s a lot of ripple effect, that\u2019s huge!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is!\u00a0 Shelby had such an enthusiasm for the Bible, and so seeing this is amazing.\u00a0 Seeing these kids memorize all of this scripture.\u00a0 God speaks to His people through His word so just knowing that they have all this in their heart now is just a huge blessing \u2013 it\u2019s an amazing legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, of course we\u2019re hoping that over the next several months there\u2019ll be a lot of young people and their parents who will get registered for the 2010 Bible Bee who will compete in the regional competitions that take place in the early fall.\u00a0 Then some of those students will be back at the National Bible Bee in 2010 which will take place in November.\u00a0 \u201cHe who loves his own wife loves himself, for no one ever hated his own flesh but nourishes and cherishes it just as Christ also does the church.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, there are two words in there that men need to get.\u00a0 One is nourish and the other is cherish.\u00a0 Nourish means to feed, it means to cultivate so it will grow \u2013 that\u2019s a husbands assignment with his wife \u2013 to help her grow spiritually; emotionally \u2013 to help her become the woman God designed her to be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow the guys are going to really like the word cherish Bob because if you take this word literally it means to warm up.\u00a0 So, it means give her a hug and warm her up.\u00a0 But, it also means to help create a teachable heart so that she\u2019ll grow and become that woman that I was talking about earlier.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, we\u2019ve been encouraging listeners to take a passage like each day like you\u2019re describing, that\u2019s pretty easy to do compared to what some of the teenagers we met last year did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, I have to tell you I expected a great event, but it really was even better than I expected.\u00a0 What was so impressive was to meet young people who had memorized not just hundreds of verses, but thousands of passages of scripture and recited them perfectly \u2013 word perfectly in front of a live audience of a thousand people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, what we\u2019re talking about is the first annual National Bible Bee that was held in Washington, D.C. back in November.\u00a0 You and I were both there to be a part of the event, and the kids who competed \u2013 all of them were winners because of how much of God\u2019s word they hid away in their hearts.\u00a0 I know it sounds trivial to say all of them were winners because in the end there were some winners.\u00a0 In fact in the elementary division there was a young lady from I think the Kansas City area who was the elementary winner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Speaker:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And the grand prize of $25,000 goes to Rebecca Horning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Cute little girl \u2013 yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>A rich, cute little girl!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There was a young man from upstate New York who was the winner in the middle school division.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He won $50,000!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Speaker:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And the grand prize of $50,000 goes to Isaac Ward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Then there was a young man in the senior division who was from West Virginia.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Speaker:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The grand prize of $100,000 goes to Daniel Stanton.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Then there was second and third place winners as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What I want our listeners to kind of get a picture of here \u2013 this is a first class national competition:\u00a0 It\u2019s the National Bible Bee.\u00a0 We\u2019re coming up on the second one now that will be \u2013 well, they\u2019re now signing folks up to my understanding \u2013 is that right Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I think they are getting the information packets out to everybody, and the deadline to register is later on this spring.\u00a0 Then the regional competition will take place early in the fall, and the nationals will be held again later in the fall.\u00a0 I think the second week in November, and we have all the information on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the organizations that we partnered with in helping to promote The National Bible Bee is Patrick Henry College which is about an hour outside of Washington, D.C. in Virginia.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how many of our listeners know this, but the Chancellor at Patrick Henry College in addition to being Chancellor is also the star of a major motion picture \u2013 did you know that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did not know that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I have seen <em>Come What May<\/em> that Dr. Farris appears in playing Dr. Farris right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, well let\u2019s introduce Michael Farris joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>I didn\u2019t ask for your autograph when you came in though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, it would decrease the value of whatever I signed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, he does join us and he is one of the key leaders in The National Bible Bee that we talked about here a year ago.\u00a0 I just have to ask you Michael now looking back over the past year and what happened \u2013 what do you think \u2013 you excited?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was thrilling.\u00a0 It\u2019s bigger, better, and more important than we ever imagined.\u00a0 You know there\u2019s some idea and you have a pretty good idea that it\u2019s going to be of certain scope.\u00a0 The scope of this was beyond what we could ask or think.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way with God\u2019s word \u2013 it\u2019s always beyond what we could ask or think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I have to tell you what happened.\u00a0 Both Bob and I participated in the Bible Bee, and as I was leading the junior\u2019s which is approximately Junior High age category, one of the judges came up and he said, \u201cI was listening to <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>in Central Wisconsin.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI was on my way back from a job interview but I was so excited about the National Bible Bee that I pulled over to the side of the road, wrote down all the information that Dr. Farris gave us about how we could get involved, and I came home and my wife asked me how\u2019d the job interview go?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he said, \u201cForget the job interview, let me tell you about what\u2019s going on with <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>and the National Bible Bee and what Michael Farris talked about.\u201d\u00a0 They got all excited, and he became a key leader, a key volunteer in Wisconsin for this, and ultimately became a judge back at the national event in Washington, D.C., and he was really excited.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to tell you what surprised me as I was at the event.\u00a0 I had envisioned that students would come up, and they\u2019d be given a verse that they would have to recite.\u00a0 So, someone would say okay, Philippians 2:3, and they\u2019d recite Philippians 2:3.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, when I got to the event I found out it wasn\u2019t Philippians 2:3.\u00a0 It was Philippians 2:1-18.\u00a0 I mean these were students \u2013 some of the winners they had memorized huge chunks of scripture:\u00a0 Entire Psalms, entire chapters of the Bible.\u00a0 It was amazing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was indeed.\u00a0 It was a lot to memorize, and we may have to vary that a little bit to make it more approachable for the young people that we wanted to participate.\u00a0 Because, it\u2019s not just about getting the final three!\u00a0 Our real emphasis was on the 17,000 that started off.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was a young person, I was involved with a group that memorized scripture called:\u00a0 King\u2019s Sons.\u00a0 It was kind of a precursor of Awana, and I memorized probably over five or six years several hundred verses \u2013 nothing like these kids have memorized for The Bible Bee.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNone the less, God continues to bring fruit to that, and there are passages today.\u00a0 When I was listening to these kids back in November and hearing them recite some of it started coming back to me.\u00a0 God has used it in my life and I know He will multiply it immensely in their lives because they memorized so much more.\u00a0 The more scripture you have the more benefit you get.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You mentioned Awana.\u00a0 In this year\u2019s competition Awana is partnered with the Bible Bee.\u00a0 That should bring lots of new Bible Bee contestants shouldn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s going to bring tens of thousands of new contestants.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know one of the reasons for the success you had last year that I know you\u2019re going to desperately need this year are volunteers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We need volunteers to help with local bees.\u00a0 We need volunteers to help at the national.\u00a0 It\u2019s really a challenging thing to get about 200 volunteers to show up in Washington, D.C. at 7:30 in the morning with all the traffic and all the problems there are.\u00a0 The Lord was good to us last year in that contest but we need His people to respond to the call this year as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Michael thanks for being with us today.\u00a0 We want to turn our attention, and introduce our listeners to a couple other guests who are joining us.\u00a0 You know folks who heard about the Bible Bee last year may have heard about The Shelby Kennedy Foundation.\u00a0 That\u2019s the organization that sponsored the Bible Bee.\u00a0 They may have thought I wonder what The Shelby Kennedy I\u2019ve done a little reading on it and I\u2019m looking forward to hearing more of the story.\u00a0 So, we\u2019ve asked Debbie Kennedy who\u2019s Shelby\u2019s Mom to come in \u2013 Debbie welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, thank you for having me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, Holly Wakefield who is Shelby\u2019s sister.\u00a0 Holly thanks for joining us!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Tell us about your sister Holly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, Shelby was an amazing person.\u00a0 I mean she was an amazing sister to me, and to all of us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Was she the oldest of how many children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There were 13 children!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thirteen children and she\u2019s the oldest is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, she\u2019s the oldest of my parents, but they adopted nine children so after the adoption she was number seven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay, hold on a moment.\u00a0 We have to reel this back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think we need to go to Mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Debbie, tell us how this family got built.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, Shelby was our first birth child.\u00a0 We had Shelby and then Holly, and then we started adopting as we were having birth children.\u00a0 So, we wound up with four birth children, and nine adopted children.\u00a0 In birth order Shelby was number seven even though she was our first born. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay, you\u2019re already now a hero with Dennis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We can continue talking about this, and trust me I\u2019m restraining myself not to go down the road of all the adoptions and hear more about that.\u00a0 But, Shelby from the very beginning seemed to be set apart for something very special.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You are right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She had a love for the Lord that was very contagious to anybody around her.\u00a0 She spent hours where she would go on long walks and take her Bible, and sit and read.\u00a0 She was obsessed with the scripture \u2013 in knowing it, and she just had this enthusiasm for life that was different.\u00a0 She was kind of the motivational speaker of the family you could say that when any of us were struggling or down she would take us on a walk \u2013 that was her thing.\u00a0 She\u2019d take us on a walk and we would discuss the issues with her, and she would talk us through it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Debbie, how old was Shelby when you first learned there was something wrong?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She was twenty-two when she got sick.\u00a0 It was right at the time Holly and Mike had got married.\u00a0 So, she started having pain but we didn\u2019t think much of it because she was a very healthy girl.\u00a0 She ate health food, and exercised, and those kinds of things so we weren\u2019t suspicious of any cancer \u2013 we didn\u2019t go that route.\u00a0 We were thinking she had a pinched nerve, something wrong in her back, or you know and she was trying to check on it that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe went to several doctors and chiropractors trying to figure out what it was, and it slowly I guess from April to October is when she was actually diagnosed it was getting worse and worse.\u00a0 She started limping more where it was becoming more obvious that there was actually a big tumor on her leg.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When did you get that diagnosis, and just take us to that day will you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay!\u00a0 On October 8, 2004 we found out that she had Leiomyosarcoma.\u00a0 It was a big word, and we\u2019d never heard of anything like that.\u00a0 They told us it was very serious there was not much they could do in San Antonio.\u00a0 One doctor even suggested that she not do anything.\u00a0 But, we thought well, that\u2019s kind of gloomy and Shelby didn\u2019t want to be down or she wanted to be hopeful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we went to Houston, and they had worked with Leiosarcoma there some, and so you know by having a little bit of hope there we started chemo, and went through MD Anderson.\u00a0 I think she did six rounds of chemo and it didn\u2019t seem to do any good.\u00a0 We progressively got worse from the beginning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It had to just knock the wind out of you to hear a doctor say, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t do anything.\u201d\u00a0 I mean that kind of a diagnosis every parent thinks, no!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There has to be hope \u2013 right!\u00a0 We were very hopeful.\u00a0 Shelby was very hopeful.\u00a0 But I do believe she was very realistic and knew.\u00a0 I think she was better prepared than the rest of us were.\u00a0 Even afterwards of course looking back at things there were things she had done, and said that it was like God had prepared her so much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn her door she had painted things before she ever got sick about suffering for Christ.\u00a0 I can\u2019t remember what all they were but it really impacted us after everything happened.\u00a0 She had read a lot of books about Christian martyrs, and that sort of thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe just was very strong spiritually and physically as long as she could be.\u00a0 She tried to be very strong.\u00a0 She always could bring up her countenance when people came, and she always tried to be encouraging but we knew she was in a lot of pain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Even near the end she was ministering from a wheelchair?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, she was in a wheelchair.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She still had a very positive attitude about the whole thing.\u00a0 She was very positive in just sharing Christ with the nurses and doctors, and it was amazing her attitude through all of it.\u00a0 She was actually encouraging us when we felt like we should be encouraging her but we were just so desperate.\u00a0 We just felt traumatized and she was the one trying to lift us up and encourage us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Holly, you had to feel like you were losing your best friend didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did \u2013 yes!\u00a0 It was very traumatizing.\u00a0 I had lots of questions and I think I had to come to the conclusion that those questions couldn\u2019t be answered.\u00a0 God could show me someday Himself because there aren\u2019t answers to all the questions of the why.\u00a0 I still don\u2019t know why and it will never make sense because she was an amazing person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe testimony she left behind has been very beautiful though, and it has been encouraging to see God work through her life now that she has left a legacy.\u00a0 One of her favorite songs was by Nichole Nordeman called <em>Legacy.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 She wanted to leave a legacy and leave a mark on things.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting because she did and that was her favorite song before she was diagnosed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe would go on rocks and she would throw a rock in the water and we\u2019d see the ripple effect and she would tell me she wanted that to be her life.\u00a0 It has been her life.\u00a0 It\u2019s been encouraging seeing how the Lord has used her life now that she\u2019s gone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You don\u2019t have any way of knowing this but that song you just mentioned \u2013 we\u2019ve played that numerous times here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think we\u2019re going to play it before the broadcast is over today because it does really talk about how we need to be passing it on, and influencing others.\u00a0 That\u2019s really what I wanted to ask you Debbie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow did this foundation come about on behalf of your daughter that has now become a National Bible Bee?\u00a0 Here you had a daughter who lived her life for Christ \u2013 did you ever in your wildest imaginations believe there would be a foundation set up in her honor that has sponsored a nationwide effort to get tens of thousands of children memorizing scripture?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Debbie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, I had no idea.\u00a0 Let me just say Shelby loved children, and she loved the word.\u00a0 So, this is so amazing that the two have come together, and to watch all that\u2019s been going into it.\u00a0 But, no I never envisioned that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was at Shelby\u2019s memorial service, and a very dear friend, and brother in the Lord was there at the service and it was like the Lord gave him a vision for this in just a minute or two during her service.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have any idea that had happened.\u00a0 He came to us a little bit later and talked to us about it and asked what we thought.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just way over our head as far as can\u2019t even imagine.\u00a0 We thought, yes, that sounds really neat, and exciting and it would be just a blessing.\u00a0 It would be something that Shelby would very much be excited by.\u00a0 So, that\u2019s where it got started.\u00a0 He prayed about it and we prayed.\u00a0 Then other people were talked to and so it kind of slowly came together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, Holly, you talk about the ripples of a life and I think of the 17,000 kids last year who participated in the first National Bible Bee.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how many thousands who will participate this year.\u00a0 How many hundreds of thousands of Bible verses are being tucked away in hearts \u2013 that\u2019s a lot of ripple effect, that\u2019s huge!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Holly:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is!\u00a0 Shelby had such an enthusiasm for the Bible, and so seeing this is amazing.\u00a0 Seeing these kids memorize all of this scripture.\u00a0 God speaks to His people through His word so just knowing that they have all this in their heart now is just a huge blessing \u2013 it\u2019s an amazing legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, of course we\u2019re hoping that over the next several months there\u2019ll be a lot of young people and their parents who will get registered for the 2010 Bible Bee who will compete in the regional competitions that take place in the early fall.\u00a0 Then some of those students will be back at the National Bible Bee in 2010 which will take place in November.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of the details about how to register, how to find out more about the event, what\u2019s involved, how much you have to memorize, and all of that can be found on think because of Awana forging an alliance and partnership here, Patrick Henry College again and God\u2019s favor.\u00a0 Just thinking back to last November when we were in DC it was electric, and it
