\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In Christian love.... and it is a great video.\u00a0 I first saw this three or four years ago it was one of those viral videos that just started getting passed around and I\u2019m sorry to say I had followed your career prior to your \u2018Evangelism Linebacker\u2019 days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, you are not the only one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 You played for five or six seasons in the NFL?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 I did!\u00a0 Five with the Indianapolis Colts from 1993 to 1997 and one season with the Carolina Panthers in 1998.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 A couple of times you were nominated for the ProBowl?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 I was in \u201995 and in \u201996.\u00a0 Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 And the career, what happened back in \u201998 to end that career?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, against the Dallas Cowboys I ran downfield, made a move and ran into a blocker and he went one way and I went the other way and my knee said, \u201cI don\u2019t agree with that.\u201d\u00a0 A ligament was snapped and I broke a bone on the outside part of my knee.\u00a0 So, the sixth year, I knew something was changing, something was happening and so, that injury just hurried up the process of me transitioning from the NFL into becoming a speaker and a pastor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 When you say you knew something was changing, you don\u2019t mean physically, you mean something was happening inside of you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 Something was happening where as my passion and my desires for football were changing.\u00a0 Instead of seeing myself tackling a running back so hard that snot-bubbles come out of his nose, I began to see myself on stage preaching about love and compassion and Jesus.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs football player, you need to be all the way in.\u00a0\u00a0 I realized that my\u00a0 passions were changing and I didn\u2019t understand what God was doing and so, moving into that sixth season and as I got injured, now I can look back and see that six years was the time I needed to build a platform that I have now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you ever preach so hard that snot-bubbles come out of peoples\u2019 noses?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 You know.... Ahhhh ..... I\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Have you ever had that question?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 I have never had that question asked before.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We feature questions here ....\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 ...that nobody dares to ask.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Nobody would ask.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin:<\/strong>\u00a0 But, I have broken a watch before and that kind of stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Broken a watch?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0 From tacklin\u2019 somebody who came to your church?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yeah!\u00a0 They were getting up to leave and....now, I am joking!\u00a0 I am kidding!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, let\u2019s reel all this back in, because you have become a preacher and you also have your own ministry that you and your wife, Vicky, give leadership to.\u00a0 You grew up in a home, though, that was not exactly the picture perfect biblical home.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t have godly roots there? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 No!\u00a0 I love my family, they are the only family that I have, but the reality was it was not the greatest environment to grow up in.\u00a0 My mom, when she was 16, she gave birth to me.\u00a0 By the time I was five, my dad was out of my life.\u00a0 My grandmother primarily raised me and she did the best job that she could do.\u00a0 I came from an environment where no one was married, not very many people had jobs, I have seen a lot of drug abuse, and I had seen things that a young child should not see.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy age 13, I recognized that my way out of this was two ways; the military or football.\u00a0 So, I began to eat, drink, and sleep football.\u00a0 I began to train as hard as I could train, because that was my salvation.\u00a0 So, I viewed football, in essence, as my god.\u00a0 A god is anyone or anything that gives you purpose or identity for life.\u00a0 I ended up getting a football scholarship to Brigham Young University in 1989.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Before you go there, you had some points of interacting and some intersection with your father as you were growing up as a young man that I found... I couldn\u2019t believe.\u00a0 It is like...WOW!\u00a0 Dad stepped back into your life at an athletic event and you haven\u2019t seen him in two years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes! When I was in the 8<sup>th<\/sup> grade, my Dad showed up for a basketball game and I hadn\u2019t seen him in years.\u00a0 He was sitting next to my mom.\u00a0 As I was playing, I was getting angry that he had the audacity to be there.\u00a0 As he was yelling things, I don\u2019t really know exactly what he was saying, but as he was yelling things and I just continued to get more angry and more angry.\u00a0 And I had a terrible game!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter the game, he came into the locker room and he began to talk to the coach and it became clear to me and the coach that he had a substance abuse problem.\u00a0 At that moment, I had decided in my mind that I am going to live as though he did not exist.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd now, we have reconciled, but that has been through the love of Christ, because I realized that the same love that Christ gave me I now needed to extend to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, let\u2019s go back to going to Brigham Young University on scholarship... Was football your god at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Football had no rival in my life!\u00a0 Football was my god!\u00a0 It defined everything that I did!\u00a0 I got a football scholarship to Brigham Young and here I am a kid from the ghetto and I go to Provo, Utah.\u00a0 A total culture shock!\u00a0 I went to school there and I played under a great coach, Levell Edwards.\u00a0 I went on to win four Conference Championships and got drafted in the 1993 draft as the 92<sup>nd<\/sup> selection.\u00a0 Right before I graduated college, my wife and I got married.\u00a0 She was a javelin thrower on the track team.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Whew!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yeah!\u00a0 So, I don\u2019t make my wife mad ...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 No! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin:<\/strong> ... because if I tried to run down the street and she would throw a fork a hundred yards and get me in the gluteus maximus or something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yeah really!\u00a0 So, you did quite well in collegiate football, drafted as the 92<sup>nd<\/sup> choice in the NFL, and you had the world by the tail, didn\u2019t you?\u00a0 Everything was revolving around you, traveling with the team, going on road trips with the Colts; it had to be a fun lifestyle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Your dreams often meet reality, and reality often beats up your dreams.\u00a0 For me, you enter into this NFL and everything you see on TV becomes reality.\u00a0 But, actually, my first year in the NFL, I wanted to quit!\u00a0 You had rookie hazing, the work was a lot harder, and the pressure was a lot more intense.\u00a0 It actually took me about 2 years to get the groove of the NFL.\u00a0 My mission and my objective of getting to the NFL was this; *If I make it, I can make a lot of money then I can send money home to Texas and that would fix all the problems, that would change everybody\u2019s life and that would fix my life as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, by my 3<sup>rd<\/sup> year in the NFL, I was a team captain, I had a nice car, the beautiful wife, and I had a baby girl and I was able to send money home to my parents, grandparents and siblings, but the reality is I was sending the wrong thing home.\u00a0 You can only send what you possess and so I thought that money would change things.\u00a0 But, money could not empower me to love my wife the way she deserved to be loved.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 God had started to do a work in your heart; was it back in your rookie season when happened?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had a teammate and his name is Steve Grant, but his nickname was the \u2018Naked Preacher,\u2019 because every day after practice this linebacker that was 6 ft. 2 in. and 240 lbs. would take a shower, dry off, wrap a towel around his waist, and then he would go to my teammate\u2019s lockers and he would ask them this question using this voice; he would say, (sound of \u2013 tsk, tsk, tsk) \u201cDo you know Jesus?\u201d (Sound of \u2013 \u2018tsk, tsk, tsk\u2019) \u201cDo you know Jesus?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did not come from a Christian background; I didn\u2019t understand that language, so the first thing in my mind is, \u2018Do you know you are half naked?\u2019\u00a0 So, I asked the veterans on the team what\u2019s up with the \u2018half naked black man walking around talking about \u2013 Do you know Jesus?\u2019\u00a0 They said, \u201cDon\u2019t pay no attention to him, that\u2019s the \u2018Naked Preacher.\u2019\u201d And he embodied the message that he communicated.\u00a0 Whenever somebody needed wisdom or direction they went to him.\u00a0 When other guys were out partying, he had a family.\u00a0 He honored his wife!\u00a0 He honored his children!\u00a0 The way he played the game, the intensity and the passion!\u00a0 He had what I did not have.\u00a0 By him asking me that question over a five year period, I had seen what he meant by, \u201cDo you know Jesus?\u201d\u00a0 And it was a changed and transformed life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But there came a point in that five year period when those questions started to penetrate below the surface.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Absolutely!\u00a0\u00a0 Over the five year process, I accomplished all my dreams and I recognized a few things; number one, fame and money and status and power could not heal my heart, it could not teach me to forgive.\u00a0 And it could not empower me to forgive those who had hurt me and it could not empower me to love my wife the way she deserved to be loved.\u00a0 Then you add getting injuries; that when you start getting injured, you recognize that football doesn\u2019t love you unconditionally.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOver the year year process, this \u2018perfect storm\u2019 was arising and so, on August 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, 1997 my fifth year with the NFL, it was a training camp at Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana, after lunch I was down in the dumps and I got back to my dorm room and I called my wife on the phone and I said, \u201choney, I want to be more committed to you and I want to be committed to Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s when I was born again!\u00a0 I recognized that the living God of the universe loved me and not coming from a Christian environment I never heard a man say, \u201cSon, I love you.\u201d\u00a0 To recognize that the living God of the universe loved me and not just a little bit.\u00a0 If He had biceps, He would tattoo my name on it.\u00a0 God was passionately in love with me.\u00a0 It just ... had undone me! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got infected with this virus called grace and the intensity has only increased since that day.\u00a0 What did it for me was God loves you, not based on how fast you run, not based on how hard you tackle, but based on the facts that it delights His heart to love.\u00a0 It is not just a love me to leave me the same, but to love me and to transform me into a new kind of person.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was Steve \u2013 \u2018the Naked Preacher\u2019 at training camp that year?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Steve Grant, Yes!\u00a0 We played together for 5 seasons.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, when you called your wife and said, \u201cI want to be more committed to you and more committed to Jesus,\u201d did you go tell Steve?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 I talked to him the very next day and he began to discipling me and a couple of other guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Cool! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin:<\/strong>\u00a0 People often ask me, \u201cWhat was your greatest experience in the NFL?\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019d say, \u201cI met the \u2018Naked Preacher.\u201d\u00a0 They were like, \u201cSay what?\u201d\u00a0 I would say, \u201cYeah!\u00a0 I met the \u2018Naked Preacher,\u2019 let me share the story about the \u2018Naked Preacher.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, the ultimate experience of the NFL was you met the King of the universe.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 That\u2019s right! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Through His Son, Jesus Christ!\u00a0\u00a0 He still changes lives!\u00a0 I have to believe, Derwin, that there is a listener right now who identifies with your description of yourself.\u00a0 It may be a man, it may be a woman, they may be married, they may be single or their lives may be in a mess. They haven\u2019t performed and as a result it is chaos.\u00a0 And right now what they need is a relationship with Christ.\u00a0 Would you lead that person who is listening right now into how they can have a relationship with Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Derwin<\/strong>:\u00a0 I would be honored to do that.\u00a0 For those of you that are out there, maybe you think you have outrun the grace of God, maybe you think you have messed up so bad that God could never love you.\u00a0 What is so awesome about our God is that there is nothing that we can do to out run His long arms of love.\u00a0 There is nothing that we can do to out-sin\u00a0 His grace and I am going to ask you a question that was asked to me.\u00a0 \u201c (Tsk \u2013 Tsk \u2013 Tsk)\u00a0 Do\u00a0 you know Jesus?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, He wants to know you.\u00a0\u00a0 A way that you can come to know Him is simply by acknowledging a couple of things;\u00a0 the first thing is that you acknowledge that there is a God that does love you, the second thing is that you acknowledge is that you have blown it and God specializes in rescuing people who have blown it.\u00a0 That is called sin!\u00a0 The next thing to recognize is that Jesus Christ died on a cross because you blew it and His motivation was love.
