FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever connected the reality of beauty, and the existence of God.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about that today with Dr. Al Mohler.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I have a question that I\u2019d like to ask our guest today, and it really does tie in to what we\u2019re talking about this week which is the book he\u2019s written called:\u00a0 <em>The Disappearance of God<\/em>.\u00a0 Can I just jump in and ask or you should probably introduce him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Dr. Al Mohler joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Al, welcome back!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s great to be back!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He is President of as Bob said earlier \u201cThe\u201d Southern Baptist \u2013 now do you really say it that way - The Southern Baptist?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It really is a part \u2013 the definite article is definitely a part of our name.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Is it really? \u2013 The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We have some wonderful sister schools now but we were the first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know before Bob asks you this question you rescued this school from the clutches of liberalism \u2013 can you share with our listeners just how bad things were when you arrived, and rescued it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, it really was a picture of liberal Protestantism where there were denials of not only of the Bible\u2019s authority, and its inerrancy but substantial doctrinal error on things like the resurrection of Christ, and whether or not one had to be a Christian to come to faith in Christ in order to be saved\u2014some very basic issues.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had professors who were waffling on this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes \u2013 published authors.\u00a0 I\u2019m not just talking behind their backs they were very open about this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You had to come in and say, \u201cYou can\u2019t teach that, and teach here\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I had to come in and say, \u201cYou can\u2019t teach anything outside of our confession of faith, and teach here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That took a while to sink in didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It did, and I have to be careful you know and say, \u201cThat not everyone who was on the faculty then held to those positions.\u201d\u00a0 That would be dishonest and slanderous to them but the fact that there would be one would be too many, and there were far more than one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There were how many students at the time you took over?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>About 2800 to 3000.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And today there\u2019s how many?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al: <\/strong>\u00a0Four thousand five hundred and we went way down.\u00a0 Let me tell you what.\u00a0 You can really reduce a student body when you take an institution through that kind of correction.\u00a0 We went down to about 1800 students but the Lord has just given us such an incredible opportunity, and it is such a happy place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There is a hunger in this new generation for the truth.\u00a0 I think sometimes in this entertainment culture we miss that \u2013 that there really is a desire to be taught straight from the scripture, and taught some hard-core convictions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Which gets me to my question \u2013 you wrote this book <em>The Disappearance of God <\/em>and of course when I read the title the first thing I thought of was the famous quote attributed to Frederick Nietzsche \u2013 God is dead.\u00a0 We read that on the cover of magazines back in the 60\u2019s.\u00a0 In talking to my kids as they\u2019ve grown up I\u2019ve said, \u201cYou know Nietzsche\u2019s philosophy which was a philosophy that life was absurd\u00a0 - that nothing makes sense\u00a0 - I\u2019ve said if there is no God, Nietzsche\u2019s right.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, absolutely, and we have to join with him.\u00a0 We have no choice.\u00a0 He was absolutely convinced of that\u2014he was absolutely convinced that he was right.\u00a0 You know his philosophy is called Nihilism\u2014going back to the Latin word for nothing because in the end that\u2019s what he believed in absolutely nothing.\u00a0 Now in so far as we\u2019re alive right now that leaves only power as the thing he would worship and of course we know where that led in the Third Reich.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, if there is no God, there is no meaning for anything!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely \u2013 everything is absurd.\u00a0 Morality is absurd, social conventions are absurd, marriage is absurd, and parenting is absurd.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, the inverse of that is also true.\u00a0 If there is a God then there is meaning for everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If there is a God, and if this God is a speaking God.\u00a0 If He speaks to us, and reveals to us who He is, and what He would have us to know then the entire world is different, and that\u2019s why we\u2019re having this conversation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right, and it reminds me of a little cartoon I saw that had Nietzsche\u2019s statement God is dead, and it was scratched off with a big X.\u00a0 Underneath it was the statement Nietzsche is dead \u2013 God!\u00a0 He corrected it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s the last word!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, He really had the last word on the deal.\u00a0 If you say, \u201cEverything\u2019s up for grabs\u201d \u2013 one of the areas that I think there\u2019s a fresh need of thinking in is the area of beauty.\u00a0 Barbara recently read a book written by a Catholic theologian who studied beauty, and its nuances throughout history, and how it reflected the grandeur, and the glory of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if we pull back and analyze it, certainly going to the Rocky Mountains, and going on Trail Ridge Road, and seeing the snow peaks, and the wildflowers certainly beauty at that point speaks of the grandeur and the greatness of God.\u00a0 But, beauty as a theological concept is far more than that isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know one of the most important things the Bible says about God is that God is beautiful.\u00a0 We are told that Jesus is fair.\u00a0 When you think of that old song <em>Fairest Lord Jesus<\/em> it\u2019s rooting beauty in Christ, and that\u2019s where we have to start.\u00a0 One of the things we always have to say is that we\u2019re having a conversation in a Genesis 3 world\u2014in a fallen world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThus this is a world that has experienced corruption at every level.\u00a0 Even when it comes to beauty, and that\u2018s why for Christian\u2019s it\u2019s not only a matter of not knowing what we ought to know.\u00a0 It\u2019s a matter if we are not knowledgeable about a Christian understanding of beauty we\u2019ll be bought off because our lives will lie to us.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, so when you say we live in a post Genesis 3 world where beauty is corrupted\u2014we still see beauty in the world around us don\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, we see testimonies, and of course this is written throughout the Psalms.\u00a0 We look to the creation, and we see that the heavens are telling the glory of God.\u00a0 You could get the most hardened atheist out, and take him to the Rocky Mountains and point them to the sunset, and they\u2019re going to have some kind of thought that is transcendent even when they don\u2019t want to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s because this is crying out some conscious, glorious, infinite mind gave us this.\u00a0 Beauty requires gift\u2014that\u2019s the most amazing thing because beauty is not natural.\u00a0 Beauty requires the gift of beauty, and than that\u2019s where again beauty implies a creator.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now wait see unpack that for me because when you say beauty implies gift I\u2019m not sure I understand what you\u2019re saying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, beauty is something that is given to us; it\u2019s something that is presented to us.\u00a0 It requires a creator and so this goes back to the fact that when we see a sunset that\u2019s a gift.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just a naturalistic phenomenon we\u2019re looking at there.\u00a0 Some mind and of course we believe the Creator\u2019s mind gave us that as a gift.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you look at a face of a child you think that is just unspeakably beautiful.\u00a0 That\u2019s a gift.\u00a0 The thing itself is a gift.\u00a0 The child is a gift.\u00a0 The person is a gift.\u00a0 The sunset is a gift, but the knowledge of it and the ability to see it is also a gift.\u00a0 Beauty humbles us if we really understand it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re saying beauty could not exist if there wasn\u2019t someone making something beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let\u2019s put it this way \u2013 the law implies a lawgiver \u2013 beauty implies a source of that beauty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We teach at our Weekend to Remember Marriage Conferences that our spouse is a gift from God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Our spouse is by definition beautiful!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 That\u2019s an interesting concept that God in giving the gift wants the gift ultimately to honor Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely because He is the only beautiful one.\u00a0 He\u2019s the only wise one.\u00a0 He\u2019s the only good, the only just, and so beauty is a testimony to Him.\u00a0 Again, that\u2019s why beauty should humble us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s something about standing in front of a magnificent painting one that\u2019s just truly a stunning work of art.\u00a0 If you go to the Louvre, or you go to one of the great museums and you look at some of these masterpieces \u2013 you look at Rembrandt\u2019s ability to replicate a lace collar on a medieval piece of clothing.\u00a0\u00a0 You look at that and say, \u201cSomebody had to gift that.\u201d\u00a0 Even atheists call it an artistic gift \u2013 well again gift implies a giver!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay but hang on.\u00a0 Proverbs 31 says, \u201cBeauty is vain.\u201d\u00a0 It really talks about the fact that in the Proverbs 31 woman we shouldn\u2019t be focused on her physical appearance as the mark of her beauty should we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s the problem.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a distinction that we have to learn to make.\u00a0 There\u2019s a difference between the beautiful and the pretty.\u00a0 We\u2019re too often bought off by pretty.\u00a0 Our eyes are attracted to pretty.\u00a0 We\u2019re told in the Bible that our eyes lie to us.\u00a0 There\u2019s the deceitfulness of the eyes, there\u2019s the seduction of the eyes.\u00a0 This is the problem with pornography.\u00a0 It may be something that is a delight to the eyes:\u00a0 In fact a seductive, addictive delight to corrupted eyes it can\u2019t be beautiful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the same sense here\u2019s the thing that I often describe.\u00a0 I say, \u201cChristian\u2019s and Christian\u2019s alone are the people who know not because they\u2019re smarter than everyone else but because of God\u2019s revelation of scripture \u2013 we\u2019re the people who know that a child with the face of down syndrome is beautiful, and the air-brushed cosmetically enhanced windblown face of the fashion model staring out from the magazine is merely pretty.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes and every person who\u2019s listening to us right now knows exactly what you\u2019re talking about in those two images as we\u2019re raising our families.\u00a0 However in this culture where beauty has been distorted how are we to raise our sons and daughters to appreciate beauty and not distort it in the culture especially with young ladies?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI used to go shopping for a prom dress for my teenage daughters, and I wanted them to be attractive, to be pretty in I think the best sense of that word but where\u2019s the balance here Al for the follower of Christ in terms of translating this into core values and convictions for our kids?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Here\u2019s one of the happiest things I can convey.\u00a0 The Christian worldview of beauty understands first of all that beauty is rooted in the reality of God\u2014in the character and in the being of God, and so also is goodness, and so also is truth.\u00a0 The Christian worldview understands that the good, the beautiful, and the true \u2013 those are the three great transcendental\u2019s of the human imagination.\u00a0 The good, the beautiful, and the true are the same thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe world in its falleness wants to strip them apart.\u00a0 It wants to say that the true thing is ugly.\u00a0 It wants to say that a beautiful thing is not good.\u00a0 It wants to say that something that is evil is beautiful.\u00a0 It wants to say that a lie is good.\u00a0 That\u2019s what we have to resist.\u00a0 We have to go back and say you want to know what true beauty is?\u00a0 True beauty is God\u2019s gift, and where you find beauty you find goodness, and you find truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, when we think back to Proverbs 31, and here\u2019s this verse that ends the chapter \u201ccharm is deceitful, beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What you\u2019re really saying is, \u201cWe have to retrain ourselves to a new standard of what we\u2019re looking at and calling beautiful right\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and Proverbs 31 is describing a beautiful woman.\u00a0 She\u2019s beautiful in every way.\u00a0 The physical is just irrelevant to that.\u00a0 Not only that \u2013 here\u2019s Solomon saying, \u201cLook prettiness can delude.\u201d\u00a0 You know you can look at something that\u2019s attractive, and it\u2019s not there.\u00a0 You know one of the things we have to say to young men \u2013 to boys is you are going to find yourself attracted to female prettiness, and there\u2019s not a male alive who hasn\u2019t had that experience of just having that \u2013 wow look at that, look who just crossed the room, look at that beautiful face, look at those beautiful eyes, the hair \u2013 you know and beyond that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou simply look and you say, \u201cThat is beautiful\u201d!\u00a0 But, it isn\u2019t necessarily beautiful because she could be as the Bible says \u2013 a temptress.\u00a0 You know she could be someone of no moral character \u2013 she could be someone that we wouldn\u2019t want as wife, and the mother of our children.\u00a0 So, there can be prettiness but we better learn to discern the difference between prettiness and beauty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As you\u2019re introducing the subject and as we\u2019re talking about beauty I\u2019m trying to think what passages do I think of in the scripture that talk about beauty?\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting the first one that came to mind is that passage in Isaiah that says, \u201cHow lovely on the mountains are the feet of Him who brings good news.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s really defining beauty around mission.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And it\u2019s brought back in Roman\u2019s 10 because what it says, \u201cBeauty is gospel.\u201d\u00a0 See that\u2019s where it gives the good, the beautiful, and the true are there - what is more good, and beautiful, and true than the gospel of Christ?\u00a0 It is the thing that is most beautiful!\u00a0 Christ Himself is the most beautiful thing human eyes have ever seen which is one of the problems with having a painting of Him.\u00a0 You can\u2019t even come close to the reality.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we have in Christ is what Paul says in Colossians, \u201cThe one icon \u2013 the exact representation of God\u2019s glory.\u201d\u00a0 You find that also in Hebrews chapter 1.\u00a0 You start looking at that and you say all right to be a Christian then is to love beauty because we love Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When you talk about the beauty of Christ we have to remember that Isaiah defines Him physically, prophetically as having no stately former majesty that we should be drawn to Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Isn\u2019t that the whole point?\u00a0 What\u2019s beautiful about Him is His obedience.\u00a0 What\u2019s beautiful about Him is His incarnation.\u00a0 What\u2019s beautiful about Him is the fact that to see Him was to see the Father as he says in the gospel of John.\u00a0 What was beautiful about Him was His obedience most clearly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know here\u2019s the difference between the artificial and the real:\u00a0 You know the pretty is often artificial.\u00a0 You can dress things up you know as my grandfather used to say.\u00a0 You can put makeup on a pig but it just doesn\u2019t make it anymore beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I was thinking of two different passages.\u00a0 The first was in how beauty destroyed Samson.\u00a0 It said, \u201cGo get her for she looks good to me.\u201d\u00a0 His eyes betrayed him at that point.\u00a0 The second thing I was thinking about, and maybe this is a bit condemning of me was Song of Solomon \u2013 how beautiful are your feet in sandals O prince\u2019s daughter \u2013 then he kind of works his way on up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But you know Dennis that raises a very good issue about beauty and marriage.\u00a0 If you are married, you are married who to you is the most beautiful woman in the world.\u00a0 That means we, as husbands have to retrain our eyes so that when we see our wives we see our covenant partner.\u00a0 We see the one to whom we\u2019ve made an absolute commitment until death do we part, we see the one to whom we are so drawn that we have entered into before God a one flesh relationship.\u00a0 We see the mother of our children, we see the woman we want to grow old beside.\u00a0 That means again what does pornography become?\u00a0 Pornography becomes the destroyer of the good, the beautiful, and the true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The last verse that came to mind for me is from Ecclesiastes chapter 3 after Solomon talks about there\u2019s a time for this, and a time for that he says, \u201cGod makes all things beautiful in its time.\u201d\u00a0 God really is the one who brings beauty \u2013 well now there\u2019s another verse even from ashes God can bring beauty right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely, and God is the only source of real beauty.\u00a0 What this means is that wherever human beings achieve something that approximates beauty and points to beauty, it\u2019s another reminder that we\u2019re made in the image of God.\u00a0 Let me just give you something to think about \u2013 you go to the zoo \u2013 we\u2019re looked at by a lot of animals.\u00a0 Those animals aren\u2019t thinking boy she\u2019s pretty. He\u2019s ugly.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s safe to say there\u2019s never been an elephant on the savanna who\u2019s thought \u2013 woo look at that sunset.\u00a0 It\u2019s a part of being made in the image of God that we even have the category of beauty.\u00a0 You know all a male dog needs is a female dog, and all nature needs is urges and drives.\u00a0 We are those who are given the gift of being drawn to beauty!\u00a0 That\u2019s a testimony to the gospel because here\u2019s the other thing every good thing we find on earth ends up being inadequate.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe eat but we\u2019re hungry again.\u00a0 We drink but we\u2019re thirsty again.\u00a0 Jesus says as He speaks to the woman at the well, \u201cThat He will offer water which when received means one will never thirst again.\u201d\u00a0 He says in John chapter 6, \u201cYou need to eat the bread of life that once you eat it you will never be hungry again.\u201d\u00a0 We will only find in the gospel of Christ the kind of beauty that means we will never yearn for that kind of beauty again.\u00a0 We find it in Christ and you know every earthly experience of beauty ought to say to us that is so magnificent.\u00a0 There has to be something greater\u2014there has to be perfect!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, there is, and you\u2019d have to see where Barbara and I live in the woods Al.\u00a0 Over 25 years ago we moved to the country, and on a ridge overlooking a lake that has a sunset view.\u00a0 So, every night we get a little different display of the grandeur of God.\u00a0 I have sat on our deck on more than one occasion and looked out there, and thought if this is this spectacular, if this is this beautiful then what is heaven going to look like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll tell you what heaven\u2019s going to look like.\u00a0 Imagine that when you look out from your porch you are seeing every sunset that God ever made, you are seeing every mountain range, you\u2019re seeing every thunderstorm, you\u2019re seeing inside every cell, and inside every molecule, you\u2019re seeing every human being who ever lived perfectly made in the image of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat would itself do you only a hint of what it\u2019s going to be like to see God Himself no longer through a glass darkly but to see Him face to face.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to be face to face with the true beautiful one.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you what; in heaven no one\u2019s going to say you remember that sunset back on earth?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and it\u2019s not going to be boring.\u00a0 You know as a kid I used to think heaven was going to be floating around clouds, strumming a harp \u2013 it was like boring!\u00a0 But that kind of beauty will be mesmerizing.\u00a0 It will be full of the glory and grandeur of God.\u00a0 We\u2019ll give thanks to Him, and it will be great to be there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAl, I just want to thank you for being a great spokesman for Christ.\u00a0 It\u2019s never said it in that response so quickly.\u00a0 My own mother knowing I was coming here said, \u201cYou tell those people they do a good job.\u201d\u00a0 So, I\u2019m telling you on my mother\u2019s authority.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You tell your mom she did a good job in having you, and we appreciate her Louisville.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We have some wonderful sister schools now but we were the first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know before Bob asks you this question you rescued this school from the clutches of liberalism \u2013 can you share with our listeners just how bad things were when you arrived, and rescued it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, it really was a picture of liberal Protestantism where there were denials of not only of the Bible\u2019s authority, and its inerrancy but substantial doctrinal error on things like the resurrection of Christ, and whether or not one had to be a Christian to come to faith in Christ in order to be saved\u2014some very basic issues.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had professors who were waffling on this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes \u2013 published authors.\u00a0 I\u2019m not just talking behind their backs they were very open about this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You had to come in and say, \u201cYou can\u2019t teach that, and teach here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That took a while to sink in didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It did, and I have to be careful you know and say, \u201cThat not everyone who was on the faculty then held to those positions.\u201d\u00a0 That would be dishonest and slanderous to them but the fact that there would be one would be too many, and there were far more than one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There were how many students at the time you took over?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>About 2800 to 3000.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And today there\u2019s how many?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al: <\/strong>\u00a0Four thousand five hundred and we went way down.\u00a0 Let me tell you what.\u00a0 You can really reduce a student body when you take an institution through that kind of correction.\u00a0 We went down to about 1800 students but the Lord has just given us such an incredible opportunity, and it is such a happy place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There is a hunger in this new generation for the truth.\u00a0 I think sometimes in this entertainment culture we miss that \u2013 that there really is a desire to be taught straight from the scripture, and taught some hard-core convictions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Which gets me to my question \u2013 you wrote this book <em>The Disappearance of God <\/em>and of course when I read the title the first thing I thought of was the famous quote attributed to Frederick Nietzsche \u2013 God is dead.\u00a0 We read that on the cover of magazines back in the 60\u2019s.\u00a0 In talking to my kids as they\u2019ve grown up I\u2019ve said, \u201cYou know Nietzsche\u2019s philosophy which was a philosophy that life was absurd\u00a0 - that nothing makes sense\u00a0 - I\u2019ve said if there is no God, Nietzsche\u2019s right.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, absolutely, and we have to join with him.\u00a0 We have no choice.\u00a0 He was absolutely convinced of that\u2014he was absolutely convinced that he was right.\u00a0 You know his philosophy is called Nihilism\u2014going back to the Latin word for nothing because in the end that\u2019s what he believed in absolutely nothing.\u00a0 Now in so far as we\u2019re alive right now that leaves only power as the thing he would worship and of course we know where that led in the Third Reich.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, if there is no God, there is no meaning for anything!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely \u2013 everything is absurd.\u00a0 Morality is absurd, social conventions are absurd, marriage is absurd, and parenting is absurd.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, the inverse of that is also true.\u00a0 If there is a God then there is meaning for everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If there is a God, and if this God is a speaking God.\u00a0 If He speaks to us, and reveals to us who He is, and what He would have us to know then the entire world is different, and that\u2019s why we\u2019re having this conversation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right, and it reminds me of a little cartoon I saw that had Nietzsche\u2019s statement God is dead, and it was scratched off with a big X.\u00a0 Underneath it was the statement Nietzsche is dead \u2013 God!\u00a0 He corrected it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s the last word!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, He really had the last word on the deal.\u00a0 If you say, \u201cEverything\u2019s up for grabs\u201d \u2013 one of the areas that I think there\u2019s a fresh need of thinking in is the area of beauty.\u00a0 Barbara recently read a book written by a Catholic theologian who studied beauty, and its nuances throughout history, and how it reflected the grandeur, and the glory of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if we pull back and analyze it, certainly going to the Rocky Mountains, and going on Trail Ridge Road, and seeing the snow peaks, and the wildflowers certainly beauty at that point speaks of the grandeur and the greatness of God.\u00a0 But, beauty as a theological concept is far more than that isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know one of the most important things the Bible says about God is that God is beautiful.\u00a0 We are told that Jesus is fair.\u00a0 When you think of that old song <em>Fairest Lord Jesus<\/em> it\u2019s rooting beauty in Christ, and that\u2019s where we have to start.\u00a0 One of the things we always have to say is that we\u2019re having a conversation in a Genesis 3 world\u2014in a fallen world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThus this is a world that has experienced corruption at every level.\u00a0 Even when it comes to beauty, and that\u2018s why for Christian\u2019s it\u2019s not only a matter of not knowing what we ought to know.\u00a0 It\u2019s a matter if we are not knowledgeable about a Christian understanding of beauty we\u2019ll be bought off because our lives will lie to us.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, so when you say we live in a post Genesis 3 world where beauty is corrupted\u2014we still see beauty in the world around us don\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, we see testimonies, and of course this is written throughout the Psalms.\u00a0 We look to the creation, and we see that the heavens are telling the glory of God.\u00a0 You could get the most hardened atheist out, and take him to the Rocky Mountains and point them to the sunset, and they\u2019re going to have some kind of thought that is transcendent even when they don\u2019t want to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s because this is crying out some conscious, glorious, infinite mind gave us this.\u00a0 Beauty requires gift\u2014that\u2019s the most amazing thing because beauty is not natural.\u00a0 Beauty requires the gift of beauty, and than that\u2019s where again beauty implies a creator.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now wait see unpack that for me because when you say beauty implies gift I\u2019m not sure I understand what you\u2019re saying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, beauty is something that is given to us; it\u2019s something that is presented to us.\u00a0 It requires a creator and so this goes back to the fact that when we see a sunset that\u2019s a gift.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just a naturalistic phenomenon we\u2019re looking at there.\u00a0 Some mind and of course we believe the Creator\u2019s mind gave us that as a gift.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you look at a face of a child you think that is just unspeakably beautiful.\u00a0 That\u2019s a gift.\u00a0 The thing itself is a gift.\u00a0 The child is a gift.\u00a0 The person is a gift.\u00a0 The sunset is a gift, but the knowledge of it and the ability to see it is also a gift.\u00a0 Beauty humbles us if we really understand it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re saying beauty could not exist if there wasn\u2019t someone making something beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let\u2019s put it this way \u2013 the law implies a lawgiver \u2013 beauty implies a source of that beauty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We teach at our Weekend to Remember Marriage Conferences that our spouse is a gift from God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Our spouse is by definition beautiful!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 That\u2019s an interesting concept that God in giving the gift wants the gift ultimately to honor Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely because He is the only beautiful one.\u00a0 He\u2019s the only wise one.\u00a0 He\u2019s the only good, the only just, and so beauty is a testimony to Him.\u00a0 Again, that\u2019s why beauty should humble us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s something about standing in front of a magnificent painting one that\u2019s just truly a stunning work of art.\u00a0 If you go to the Louvre, or you go to one of the great museums and you look at some of these masterpieces \u2013 you look at Rembrandt\u2019s ability to replicate a lace collar on a medieval piece of clothing.\u00a0\u00a0 You look at that and say, \u201cSomebody had to gift that.\u201d\u00a0 Even atheists call it an artistic gift \u2013 well again gift implies a giver!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay but hang on.\u00a0 Proverbs 31 says, \u201cBeauty is vain.\u201d\u00a0 It really talks about the fact that in the Proverbs 31 woman we shouldn\u2019t be focused on her physical appearance as the mark of her beauty should we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s the problem.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a distinction that we have to learn to make.\u00a0 There\u2019s a difference between the beautiful and the pretty.\u00a0 We\u2019re too often bought off by pretty.\u00a0 Our eyes are attracted to pretty.\u00a0 We\u2019re told in the Bible that our eyes lie to us.\u00a0 There\u2019s the deceitfulness of the eyes, there\u2019s the seduction of the eyes.\u00a0 This is the problem with pornography.\u00a0 It may be something that is a delight to the eyes:\u00a0 In fact a seductive, addictive delight to corrupted eyes it can\u2019t be beautiful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the same sense here\u2019s the thing that I often describe.\u00a0 I say, \u201cChristian\u2019s and Christian\u2019s alone are the people who know not because they\u2019re smarter than everyone else but because of God\u2019s revelation of scripture \u2013 we\u2019re the people who know that a child with the face of down syndrome is beautiful, and the air-brushed cosmetically enhanced windblown face of the fashion model staring out from the magazine is merely pretty.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes and every person who\u2019s listening to us right now knows exactly what you\u2019re talking about in those two images as we\u2019re raising our families.\u00a0 However in this culture where beauty has been distorted how are we to raise our sons and daughters to appreciate beauty and not distort it in the culture especially with young ladies?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI used to go shopping for a prom dress for my teenage daughters, and I wanted them to be attractive, to be pretty in I think the best sense of that word but where\u2019s the balance here Al for the follower of Christ in terms of translating this into core values and convictions for our kids?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Here\u2019s one of the happiest things I can convey.\u00a0 The Christian worldview of beauty understands first of all that beauty is rooted in the reality of God\u2014in the character and in the being of God, and so also is goodness, and so also is truth.\u00a0 The Christian worldview understands that the good, the beautiful, and the true \u2013 those are the three great transcendental\u2019s of the human imagination.\u00a0 The good, the beautiful, and the true are the same thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe world in its falleness wants to strip them apart.\u00a0 It wants to say that the true thing is ugly.\u00a0 It wants to say that a beautiful thing is not good.\u00a0 It wants to say that something that is evil is beautiful.\u00a0 It wants to say that a lie is good.\u00a0 That\u2019s what we have to resist.\u00a0 We have to go back and say you want to know what true beauty is?\u00a0 True beauty is God\u2019s gift, and where you find beauty you find goodness, and you find truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, when we think back to Proverbs 31, and here\u2019s this verse that ends the chapter \u201ccharm is deceitful, beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What you\u2019re really saying is, \u201cWe have to retrain ourselves to a new standard of what we\u2019re looking at and calling beautiful right\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and Proverbs 31 is describing a beautiful woman.\u00a0 She\u2019s beautiful in every way.\u00a0 The physical is just irrelevant to that.\u00a0 Not only that \u2013 here\u2019s Solomon saying, \u201cLook prettiness can delude.\u201d\u00a0 You know you can look at something that\u2019s attractive, and it\u2019s not there.\u00a0 You know one of the things we have to say to young men \u2013 to boys is you are going to find yourself attracted to female prettiness, and there\u2019s not a male alive who hasn\u2019t had that experience of just having that \u2013 wow look at that, look who just crossed the room, look at that beautiful face, look at those beautiful eyes, the hair \u2013 you know and beyond that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou simply look and you say, \u201cThat is beautiful\u201d!\u00a0 But, it isn\u2019t necessarily beautiful because she could be as the Bible says \u2013 a temptress.\u00a0 You know she could be someone of no moral character \u2013 she could be someone that we wouldn\u2019t want as wife, and the mother of our children.\u00a0 So, there can be prettiness but we better learn to discern the difference between prettiness and beauty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As you\u2019re introducing the subject and as we\u2019re talking about beauty I\u2019m trying to think what passages do I think of in the scripture that talk about beauty?\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting the first one that came to mind is that passage in Isaiah that says, \u201cHow lovely on the mountains are the feet of Him who brings good news.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s really defining beauty around mission.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And it\u2019s brought back in Roman\u2019s 10 because what it says, \u201cBeauty is gospel.\u201d\u00a0 See that\u2019s where it gives the good, the beautiful, and the true are there - what is more good, and beautiful, and true than the gospel of Christ?\u00a0 It is the thing that is most beautiful!\u00a0 Christ Himself is the most beautiful thing human eyes have ever seen which is one of the problems with having a painting of Him.\u00a0 You can\u2019t even come close to the reality.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we have in Christ is what Paul says in Colossians, \u201cThe one icon \u2013 the exact representation of God\u2019s glory.\u201d\u00a0 You find that also in Hebrews chapter 1.\u00a0 You start looking at that and you say all right to be a Christian then is to love beauty because we love Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When you talk about the beauty of Christ we have to remember that Isaiah defines Him physically, prophetically as having no stately former majesty that we should be drawn to Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Isn\u2019t that the whole point?\u00a0 What\u2019s beautiful about Him is His obedience.\u00a0 What\u2019s beautiful about Him is His incarnation.\u00a0 What\u2019s beautiful about Him is the fact that to see Him was to see the Father as he says in the gospel of John.\u00a0 What was beautiful about Him was His obedience most clearly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know here\u2019s the difference between the artificial and the real:\u00a0 You know the pretty is often artificial.\u00a0 You can dress things up you know as my grandfather used to say.\u00a0 You can put makeup on a pig but it just doesn\u2019t make it anymore beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I was thinking of two different passages.\u00a0 The first was in how beauty destroyed Samson.\u00a0 It said, \u201cGo get her for she looks good to me.\u201d\u00a0 His eyes betrayed him at that point.\u00a0 The second thing I was thinking about, and maybe this is a bit condemning of me was Song of Solomon \u2013 how beautiful are your feet in sandals O prince\u2019s daughter \u2013 then he kind of works his way on up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But you know Dennis that raises a very good issue about beauty and marriage.\u00a0 If you are married, you are married who to you is the most beautiful woman in the world.\u00a0 That means we, as husbands have to retrain our eyes so that when we see our wives we see our covenant partner.\u00a0 We see the one to whom we\u2019ve made an absolute commitment until death do we part, we see the one to whom we are so drawn that we have entered into before God a one flesh relationship.\u00a0 We see the mother of our children, we see the woman we want to grow old beside.\u00a0 That means again what does pornography become?\u00a0 Pornography becomes the destroyer of the good, the beautiful, and the true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The last verse that came to mind for me is from Ecclesiastes chapter 3 after Solomon talks about there\u2019s a time for this, and a time for that he says, \u201cGod makes all things beautiful in its time.\u201d\u00a0 God really is the one who brings beauty \u2013 well now there\u2019s another verse even from ashes God can bring beauty right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely, and God is the only source of real beauty.\u00a0 What this means is that wherever human beings achieve something that approximates beauty and points to beauty, it\u2019s another reminder that we\u2019re made in the image of God.\u00a0 Let me just give you something to think about \u2013 you go to the zoo \u2013 we\u2019re looked at by a lot of animals.\u00a0 Those animals aren\u2019t thinking boy she\u2019s pretty. He\u2019s ugly.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s safe to say there\u2019s never been an elephant on the savanna who\u2019s thought \u2013 woo look at that sunset.\u00a0 It\u2019s a part of being made in the image of God that we even have the category of beauty.\u00a0 You know all a male dog needs is a female dog, and all nature needs is urges and drives.\u00a0 We are those who are given the gift of being drawn to beauty!\u00a0 That\u2019s a testimony to the gospel because here\u2019s the other thing every good thing we find on earth ends up being inadequate.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe eat but we\u2019re hungry again.\u00a0 We drink but we\u2019re thirsty again.\u00a0 Jesus says as He speaks to the woman at the well, \u201cThat He will offer water which when received means one will never thirst again.\u201d\u00a0 He says in John chapter 6, \u201cYou need to eat the bread of life that once you eat it you will never be hungry again.\u201d\u00a0 We will only find in the gospel of Christ the kind of beauty that means we will never yearn for that kind of beauty again.\u00a0 We find it in Christ and you know every earthly experience of beauty ought to say to us that is so magnificent.\u00a0 There has to be something greater\u2014there has to be perfect!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, there is, and you\u2019d have to see where Barbara and I live in the woods Al.\u00a0 Over 25 years ago we moved to the country, and on a ridge overlooking a lake that has a sunset view.\u00a0 So, every night we get a little different display of the grandeur of God.\u00a0 I have sat on our deck on more than one occasion and looked out there, and thought if this is this spectacular, if this is this beautiful then what is heaven going to look like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll tell you what heaven\u2019s going to look like.\u00a0 Imagine that when you look out from your porch you are seeing every sunset that God ever made, you are seeing every mountain range, you\u2019re seeing every thunderstorm, you\u2019re seeing inside every cell, and inside every molecule, you\u2019re seeing every human being who ever lived perfectly made in the image of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat would itself do you only a hint of what it\u2019s going to be like to see God Himself no longer through a glass darkly but to see Him face to face.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to be face to face with the true beautiful one.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you what; in heaven no one\u2019s going to say you remember that sunset back on earth?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and it\u2019s not going to be boring.\u00a0 You know as a kid I used to think heaven was going to be floating around clouds, strumming a harp \u2013 it was like boring!\u00a0 But that kind of beauty will be mesmerizing.\u00a0 It will be full of the glory and grandeur of God.\u00a0 We\u2019ll give thanks to Him, and it will be great to be there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAl, I just want to thank you for being a great spokesman for Christ.\u00a0 It\u2019s been so enriched, whose marriages have been strengthened, whose families have been encouraged by what you do.\u00a0 So, you keep talking into that microphone and doing what you do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0Well, this morning when you spoke to our staff you said there was someone who told you that they were doing a good job.\u00a0 She\u2019s never said that about any other place you\u2019ve gone to speak?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>She\u2019s never said it in that response so quickly.\u00a0 My own mother knowing I was coming here said, \u201cYou tell those people they do a good job.\u201d\u00a0 So, I\u2019m telling you on my mother\u2019s authority.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You tell your mom she did a good job in having you, and we appreciate her compliment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Al:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, thank you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and let me just say too on behalf of a lot of folks who listen to you on your daily radio program or who tune into your blog or who are being ministered today by someone who\u2019s a graduate of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.\u00a0 We very much appreciate the work that you and your staff are doing at Southern and the way you are standing for the faith in the culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know every time I see you\u2019re going to be on with Larry King or on Fox News or something like that I don\u2019t have to worry because you\u2019re going to be clear and articulate in your defense of the faith, and you\u2019re going to do it with grace and with wisdom.\u00a0 I know I speak for a lot of our listeners in saying, Thanks for your ministry, and thanks for writing the book that you\u2019ve written here called:\u00a0 <em>The Disappearance of God <\/em>which we have in our FamilyLife Today Resource
