Do you know what I mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I don\u2019t \u2013 going fishing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, in some ways everything we do here is a little salmon like, but this one feels more salmon than any other program because we\u2019re really\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, you and I usually can communicate!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But, you\u2019re not picking this one up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All of the images that come to my mind are fishing; perhaps our guest is fishy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What is distinctive about the salmon in terms of their swimming pattern?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They go upstream to die!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, maybe we\u2019re not going up there to die, but it does feel like we\u2019re going against the current on what we\u2019re going to be talking about today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWho knows where we\u2019ll end up right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, we have a guest who has been swimming against the stream; Dr. Al Mohler joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Al, welcome to our broadcast!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s great to be here with you \u2013 thank you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Al is the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, he hosts a daily radio program, he has appeared on <em>Larry King Live<\/em>, <em>The Today Show<\/em>, <em>Good Morning America<\/em>, <em>The O\u2019Reilly Factor<\/em>.\u00a0 He and his wife Mary have been married 26 years, and they have two children:\u00a0 Katie and Christopher.\u00a0 He\u2019s written a book called <em>Desire and Deceit<\/em> \u2013<em>The Real Cost of the New Sexual Tolerance.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAl, before we get to the topic at hand, I just want to know about your Dad and your own spiritual upbringing.\u00a0 How did you come to faith in Christ:\u00a0 Were you raised in a Christian home?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was raised in a Christian home, and I\u2019m very, very thankful for that.\u00a0 There are many believers who did not have the benefit of being raised in a Christian home.\u00a0 My parents, Dick and Janet Mohler raised me, and my siblings in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.\u00a0 We were just like the proverbial expression says; we were at church every time the doors were open.\u00a0 What you expect after that is some kind of complaint \u2013 I\u2019ll tell you it was God\u2019s grace in my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You grew up in Florida?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I grew up in Lakeland, and then later in Pompano Beach, Florida.\u00a0 I knew what it was like to walk in a church, and find the happiest, friendliest people, and healthy people that I could be surrounded with as a teenager.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, they invested greatly in my life, and for that I am very thankful.\u00a0 Through them I came to know the gospel of Christ, and came to a personal knowledge of Christ, and to trust in Christ.\u00a0 I came to know myself as a sinner \u2013 not only was I loved by these people, they loved me in spite of the fact that I was a sinner:\u00a0 Desperately in need of a Savior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How old were you at the time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I made a profession of faith when I was nine years old.\u00a0 As a nine year old at Vacation Bible School I heard the preacher.\u00a0 At that time I went to a neighborhood church right down the street\u00a0 - a wonderful little Evangelical church \u2013 a little Southern Baptist Church with a bi-vocational pastor.\u00a0 The pastor worked in the phosphate mines during the week, and preached on the weekend.\u00a0 He took time off to come and preach to us, and there as a fourth grader about to go into fifth grade I heard the gospel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe one thing that I knew then that I never had sensed before was that I was a sinner.\u00a0 I knew I had sinned, but until that day \u2013 I can take you right back to where I was sitting in the pew\u00a0 - I came to look at Al the sinner.\u00a0 Then, I knew I needed a Savior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you ever rebel during those teenage years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did not rebel \u2013 that didn\u2019t mean I was by any means a perfect son.\u00a0 No, but I did have during the adolescent years a real questioning period.\u00a0 One of the things I want to say to teenagers who sometimes are really internally thrown into turmoil by that is that\u2019s the stage in life in which you start to ask the questions on your own.\u00a0 I think what teenagers need is someone who loves them, and knows the truth that will stand alongside them and say, \u201cGo ahead and ask the questions, we can handle this\u201d!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had some of those people in my life who came alongside of me and said, \u201cOkay, we\u2019re not going to stone you for asking the questions, let\u2019s figure this out.\u201d\u00a0 I really benefited from so many things, and I can say that every one of them is a part of making me who I am today by the grace and mercy of God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I wanted you to share that because off microphone you\u2019d said you grew up in an idyllic home.\u00a0 I had one of those too, and you almost feel like you need to apologize today for coming from a home like that, it wasn\u2019t perfect, it was filled with sinful people that had all kinds of issues, and were struggling but you did have some guardrails.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I never had to worry about the security in my home, and I never had to worry about the good intentioned character of the people who were around me.\u00a0 They intended good for me, and you know it is just a great tragedy that we\u2019ve removed so many of the structures of grace in the lives of children and teenagers today in which they don\u2019t have the security of feeling like they are surrounded by people who wish them well, and love them, and will stay by them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of the reasons why I wanted you to share that is because I wanted to give some mom\u2019s and dads hope.\u00a0 They\u2019re in the throes of attempting to raise children who know God, fear God, and hopefully come into a relationship with Jesus Christ, and to ultimately launch them to make a difference in our world.\u00a0 Your great example of that happened \u2013 I mean it works.\u00a0 A Christian family can reproduce itself in the future.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Christian families doing the things that Christian families know they ought to do \u2013 they provide the very structures of the kind of support, and love; nurture that make it far more likely that a young person \u2013 a child\u00a0 - an adolescent is going to grow into a healthy adulthood.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, here\u2019s another thing, make your home pleasant, make your home loving, make your home where your kids want to bring all their friends to your house.\u00a0 You\u2019ll discover that your kids will never really even think about rebellion because they like being right there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What I want to know is from that background you became ultimately a seminary president, and have tackled a subject\u2014lust.\u00a0 It\u2019s in the book <em>Desire and Deceit, <\/em>and it\u2019s all about sexual tolerance in this culture.\u00a0 Why did you go after this subject of all the issues you could have written about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of our responsibilities as Christians is to answer the questions we are asked.\u00a0 If we\u2019re alive at this time in this culture, if we are indeed engaged with anyone, we\u2019re going to be asked the very questions I have to address in this book.\u00a0 One of my frustrations is that far too many Christians dodge the question \u2013 will not answer it, or they really don\u2019t have the biblical equipment to answer it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You begin this book by really tackling the subject of lust, but you begin it on a personal level with a well-known author who has become very popular today, and a conversation he had with his son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, J. R. R. Tolkien, and it\u2019s an amazing thing isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 It\u2019s a conversation he had by means of a letter that just reminds us; people used to write letters.\u00a0 It\u2019s another way in which you used to able to communicate with people serious things.\u00a0 Parents write letters to your kids.\u00a0 You can say things in print that might be heard in a different way \u2013 it can be read over, and over, and over again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJ. R. R. Tolkien was writing to his son, and this particular son was considering issues of marriage, and sexuality.\u00a0 This very, very Christian father \u2013 he was operating out of a very explicit Christian commitment \u2013 wrote to his son about the proper place of sexuality, what he should look for in a woman, and what he should anticipate in marriage:\u00a0 It\u2019s a really sweet thing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, he talked about a monogamous relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He also admitted that monogamy is an achievement.\u00a0 You know he was very clear in a fallen world like this \u2013 human beings left to their own devices will be anything but monogamous.\u00a0 Monogamy is a fight!\u00a0 Marriage and fighting for God\u2019s holiness, and glory in marriage is a fight.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s the right kind of fight.\u00a0 It\u2019s the kind of fight that should call out the Christian knighthood in a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve heard people talk about monogamy as being one of the apologetics for the authenticity of the biblical faith, because they\u2019ve said if people got together to invent their own religion monogamy would not be what they\u2019d come up with.\u00a0 No group of guys would get together and say well, let\u2019s invent a religion where monogamy is central, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let\u2019s look at the parallel between monotheism, and monogamy.\u00a0 Here we have the one true and living God.\u00a0\u00a0 He mirrors his very character in the monogamous relationship of marriage:\u00a0 It\u2019s an exclusive relationship.\u00a0 You know we may be the last people on earth who understand what mono means \u2013 it means one and one only!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We\u2019re not given as a culture toward choosing only one thing.\u00a0 We want to have a multiple choice.\u00a0 We want them all!\u00a0 Yet, within the heart of a person is a drive that is called lust that can want things that are not ours away from the one and only \u2013 my wife; to lusting after other women.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t think there\u2019s ever been a time in human history \u2013 maybe in Ancient Rome\u00a0 - there was as sexually saturated a culture as we live in today.\u00a0 I mean if we\u2019re prone toward lust everything in the culture is exciting that in us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, I think it probably is true.\u00a0 All you have to do is go to the ruins of Pompeii, and you\u2019ll discover just how pornographic that culture was.\u00a0 You see this written throughout the ancient world just in terms of the artifacts.\u00a0 By the way just in the last several months what was claimed to be the world\u2019s oldest statue was found, and of course, it\u2019s pornographic.\u00a0 This is what it means to live on the other side of Genesis 3.\u00a0 We are pornographers at heart:\u00a0 That\u2019s where lust enters in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is where Christians many times just don\u2019t speak honestly.\u00a0 There are Christians who are reluctant to speak about sexual desire as if that\u2019s something that\u2019s just off the table.\u00a0 Well, the Bible certainly does.\u00a0 The Bible\u2019s point is that God has given us a gift that comes with an urge \u2013 with a desire \u2013 with all the energy that comes into showing God\u2019s glory in the sexual gift \u2013 in marriage \u2013 in the giving, and receiving of children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reality is that lust is just what happens when sin intersects with the sex drive.\u00a0 That\u2019s the world we live in!\u00a0 Most societies \u2013 in fact the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In fact I heard a quote attributed to Malcolm Muggeridge where he said, \u201cSex is the (ersatz or substitute) religion of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 In a very real sense, we have elevated the whole issue of sex to godlike status, haven\u2019t we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely, and virtually every paganism is sexual.\u00a0 Every worldview has to give an answer to the most basic issues of life.\u00a0 It is going to have to give a narrative of how things started and where things are going.\u00a0 It is going to have to explain how we live with each other and it is going to have to explain some morality.\u00a0 The interesting thing is that virtually every society even those that are distant from the knowledge of the gospel have gotten to monogamous marriage \u2013 have you noticed that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words the institution of marriage is written into creation, and the Bible tells us exactly that.\u00a0 But, we\u2019re living in a time when we\u2019ve just broken all the defenses down and we\u2019re celebrating the breaking down of those defenses.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk for a moment about how a mom and a dad should talk to their son or daughter about the issue of sexual pleasure and lust.\u00a0 You have already said it.\u00a0 The Christian community doesn\u2019t seem to have a good plumb line on how we\u2019re doing this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, I have a letter on my desk I just opened this morning from a woman who attended one of our Weekend to Remember Marriage Conferences and was offended that we publicly had a session \u2013 a one hour session at our conference where we talked about human sexuality, sex drive, and two people becoming one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we do that at a very tasteful way.\u00a0 There isn\u2019t graphic language as such, but we do talk about sexual pleasure.\u00a0 As a father and a mother talk to a young lad or a young lady, how would you coach them to tackle the subject of sexual pleasure, and of lust?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I think one of the problems with the way most Christian parents are taught to approach this is there\u2019s a focus on the talk:\u00a0 One great talk that\u2019s supposed to be the parent\u2019s responsibility to deal with this issue.\u00a0 Well, the reality is there\u2019s no way to cover all these things in one talk.\u00a0 The child\u2019s developing through different developmental stages.\u00a0 I really would suggest at least an annual intentional conversation especially with a father and a son about this and a mother and a daughter about this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn order to kind of say well at this stage here\u2019s what I need you to think about, and when you\u2019re talking to a six year old \u2013 a six year old needs to know something about how babies come to be.\u00a0 A six year old does not need to be talked to about how to have lust!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy the time you get to a 16 year old, he already knows where the baby\u2019s coming from.\u00a0 You\u2019d better be talking to him about how to handle this thing that\u2019s been put within him by the Creator. It is going to be either the source of great holiness in his life, or just absolute sin, depravity, and destruction in his life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, how would you define lust then to a 16 year old boy \u2013 father to son?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Lust is sexual desire directed toward the wrong object \u2013 period \u2013 that\u2019s it!\u00a0 It\u2019s directed toward the wrong object.\u00a0 This shows us just how bracing and challenging the Christian truth claim is.\u00a0 The Christian truth claim I would say to a 16 year old boy\u00a0 God has given you this gift.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to wake you up in the middle of the night.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to shake you several times during the day, and it\u2019s telling you \u2013 you are meant to be married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to grow up, be mature, and do whatever it takes for you to be able to make the kind of commitment you need to make to a young woman who is worthy of marriage.\u00a0 You need to be faithful to her.\u00a0 God\u2019s going to give you the fulfillment of this gift and He\u2019s not going to leave you alone until you get there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe problem is in our society we have people saying that there\u2019s no reason to wait until marriage.\u00a0 Your focus should be on just whatever sexual pleasure you can find.\u00a0 So, they are basically being enticed into lust.\u00a0 The Christian dad has to say to his son, \u201cBuddy, here\u2019s the deal.\u00a0 Growing up means you have to figure out how to channel your energy in this part of life until you can get to where you say \u201cI Do\u201d to a woman who will be your bride.\u00a0 Then, you pour your life into her, and yes going to have a sexual component and there\u2019s no reason to be embarrassed about talking about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, after you get married young man, you need to understand you will still have to practice the discipline of saying no to your sex drive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, absolutely!\u00a0 Let\u2019s take this 16, 17-year-old young man, and you say, \u201cTiger, here\u2019s the deal.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to struggle with this.\u201d\u00a0 We really lie to them if we say, hey, you\u2019re going to reach an age where it\u2019s no longer a struggle.\u00a0 I can take you into nursing homes where you would have plenty of testimony from elderly men saying, \u201cI\u2019m still 16.\u00a0 It\u2019s still a struggle.\u00a0 God help me\u201d!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think there are a lot of young men who are not yet married who are thinking when I get married, then the struggle will be over, because I will have the opportunity in marriage to experience sexual pleasure only to find themselves surprised that they are still tempted towards sex outside of marriage, or towards self stimulation and things like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We have also broken down so many of the defenses where quite frankly a married man has to be just as careful as an unmarried man about not allowing things into his life that are going to compromise who he is and what he\u2019s called to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I could not agree with you more!\u00a0 I think what I\u2019m hearing you say is we need to invade a teenagers life with straight talk.\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about how he\u2019s wired for 220 volts, and how it does wake him up in the middle of the night, and several times during the day, and that it\u2019s still good.\u00a0 He shouldn\u2019t be made to feel dirty, or evil, or wicked because of that \u2013 that\u2019s a gift from God.\u00a0 It\u2019s the expression of that gift, and it\u2019s the expression before you get married, and after you get married at that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou mentioned in your book Al, something that I wanted to just make sure you explained to some of our female listeners at this point.\u00a0 You think that some women don\u2019t fully understand why pornography is such an attraction to men.\u00a0 Share with our listeners why that\u2019s so important for ladies to understand.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, you know you folks do such a good job at teaching this in your seminars and conferences, but men and women are different, and it\u2019s not an accident.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just some kind of sociological patterning; it\u2019s not just some kind of psychological profile you pick up from here or there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we can even understand some of the reasons why men and women are different but here\u2019s one of the key issues when it comes to pornography:\u00a0 Men are visually stimulated \u2013 the whole sexual process for men generally starts right in the eyes.\u00a0 Something becomes an issue of notice; it changes from notice to amazement, from amazement to appreciation, from appreciation to sexual desire.\u00a0 By the way that takes place in a lot shorter time than it took me to say it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s just the reality \u2013 you know by the time a boy\u2019s about 13 or 14 years old, he\u2019s becoming aware of this, and the girls sitting in class are not.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read this the other day in which just in terms of secular literature\u00a0 - this wasn\u2019t coming from a Christian perspective, but it was saying, here\u2019s how young women, and young men of college age fantasize differently.\u00a0 It said that men\u2019s fantasies are very sexual.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt said the kind of fantasies that the young women talked about were of holding hands at the beach, of going out and doing the shopping together.\u00a0 Here\u2019s one that really touches the heart \u2013 of the young man to whom she\u2019s attracted \u2013 holding a baby, and cherishing it.\u00a0 Now that\u2019s sweet, but that\u2019s a very different picture than what he\u2019s thinking about.\u00a0 He\u2019s thinking about how you get to the baby \u2013 he\u2019s not so much thinking about the baby.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think one of the reasons why God made young men the way they are is because otherwise young men would never grow up.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the points I make in my book.\u00a0 The sex drive in part is to say to a young man you\u2019re supposed to get to somewhere \u2013 there\u2019s a destination for you, and by the way you\u2019re going to have to shave and take a shower to get there.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to have to get a job, and you\u2019re going to have to earn the credible affection of a young woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s back to what George Gilder said in the marriage years ago when he said, \u201cIf this socializes a man for a woman to say you\u2019re not going to be able to have sexual pleasure until you get married, and you\u2019d better become a social, civil, person if you want to marry me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right, and when women lower take that away as a requirement, you basically say to boys you can be a teenager forever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes and this whole revolution started back when I was a teenager \u2013 in the 60\u2019s, and 70\u2019s-\u2013the sexual revolution.\u00a0 Can a civilization outlive this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, there is no great model for a civilization regaining its sanity without some kind of calamity \u2013 you know war, poverty, pestilence.\u00a0 We certainly don\u2019t pray for those things to be required here.\u00a0 But, you know my point is to Christians:\u00a0 We can\u2019t start with a civilization; we have to start with our families, our marriages, our children, and our church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe really have to start here and say, you know every single marriage that is monogamous, and honoring to God is a little light shining in a sea of darkness.\u00a0 Every family rightly ordered to the glory of God is an oasis in the middle of a moral dessert.\u00a0 There\u2019s a great testimony to the gospel of Christ there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Maybe we can avoid calamity, and war, and pestilence as the course correction.\u00a0 Maybe revival and reformation can be the course correcting influence that will cause us to extend the life of the civilization.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We certainly better not think that the society is going to reform the church.\u00a0 We better not be thinking society\u2019s going to do the dirty work of moral correction of which we will be the beneficiary.\u00a0 The church is going to have to be where this starts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The real work of, I think reforming a civilization begins in its most basic unit:\u00a0 The family!\u00a0 That\u2019s why we come alongside mom\u2019s and dad\u2019s and cheer them on in the process of not only keeping their vows, and remaining faithful to one another, but also implanting within their children a vision, and a hope, and an expectancy that they can experience that when they get married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and that\u2019s why we recommend to folks that they get copies of books like the one Dr. Mohler\u2019s written called <em>Desire and Deceit <\/em>because if we\u2019re going to think biblically about these issues it helps for us to be mentored by someone who has invested a lot of hours, and a lot of study, and a lot of prayer in a subject like this to provide some guidance.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s what you\u2019ve done in the book <em>Desire and Deceit <\/em>which we have in our FamilyLife Today Resource Center.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also want to encourage listeners to get a copy of a book that your friend C. Dr. Al Mohler joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Al, welcome to our broadcast!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s great to be here with you \u2013 thank you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Al is the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, he hosts a daily radio program, he has appeared on <em>Larry King Live<\/em>, <em>The Today Show<\/em>, <em>Good Morning America<\/em>, <em>The O\u2019Reilly Factor<\/em>.\u00a0 He and his wife Mary have been married 26 years, and they have two children:\u00a0 Katie and Christopher.\u00a0 He\u2019s written a book called <em>Desire and Deceit<\/em> \u2013<em>The Real Cost of the New Sexual Tolerance.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAl, before we get to the topic at hand, I just want to know about your Dad and your own spiritual upbringing.\u00a0 How did you come to faith in Christ:\u00a0 Were you raised in a Christian home?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was raised in a Christian home, and I\u2019m very, very thankful for that.\u00a0 There are many believers who did not have the benefit of being raised in a Christian home.\u00a0 My parents, Dick and Janet Mohler raised me, and my siblings in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.\u00a0 We were just like the proverbial expression says; we were at church every time the doors were open.\u00a0 What you expect after that is some kind of complaint \u2013 I\u2019ll tell you it was God\u2019s grace in my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You grew up in Florida?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I grew up in Lakeland, and then later in Pompano Beach, Florida.\u00a0 I knew what it was like to walk in a church, and find the happiest, friendliest people, and healthy people that I could be surrounded with as a teenager.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, they invested greatly in my life, and for that I am very thankful.\u00a0 Through them I came to know the gospel of Christ, and came to a personal knowledge of Christ, and to trust in Christ.\u00a0 I came to know myself as a sinner \u2013 not only was I loved by these people, they loved me in spite of the fact that I was a sinner:\u00a0 Desperately in need of a Savior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How old were you at the time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I made a profession of faith when I was nine years old.\u00a0 As a nine year old at Vacation Bible School I heard the preacher.\u00a0 At that time I went to a neighborhood church right down the street\u00a0 - a wonderful little Evangelical church \u2013 a little Southern Baptist Church with a bi-vocational pastor.\u00a0 The pastor worked in the phosphate mines during the week, and preached on the weekend.\u00a0 He took time off to come and preach to us, and there as a fourth grader about to go into fifth grade I heard the gospel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe one thing that I knew then that I never had sensed before was that I was a sinner.\u00a0 I knew I had sinned, but until that day \u2013 I can take you right back to where I was sitting in the pew\u00a0 - I came to look at Al the sinner.\u00a0 Then, I knew I needed a Savior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Did you ever rebel during those teenage years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I did not rebel \u2013 that didn\u2019t mean I was by any means a perfect son.\u00a0 No, but I did have during the adolescent years a real questioning period.\u00a0 One of the things I want to say to teenagers who sometimes are really internally thrown into turmoil by that is that\u2019s the stage in life in which you start to ask the questions on your own.\u00a0 I think what teenagers need is someone who loves them, and knows the truth that will stand alongside them and say, \u201cGo ahead and ask the questions, we can handle this\u201d!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had some of those people in my life who came alongside of me and said, \u201cOkay, we\u2019re not going to stone you for asking the questions, let\u2019s figure this out.\u201d\u00a0 I really benefited from so many things, and I can say that every one of them is a part of making me who I am today by the grace and mercy of God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I wanted you to share that because off microphone you\u2019d said you grew up in an idyllic home.\u00a0 I had one of those too, and you almost feel like you need to apologize today for coming from a home like that, it wasn\u2019t perfect, it was filled with sinful people that had all kinds of issues, and were struggling but you did have some guardrails.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I never had to worry about the security in my home, and I never had to worry about the good intentioned character of the people who were around me.\u00a0 They intended good for me, and you know it is just a great tragedy that we\u2019ve removed so many of the structures of grace in the lives of children and teenagers today in which they don\u2019t have the security of feeling like they are surrounded by people who wish them well, and love them, and will stay by them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of the reasons why I wanted you to share that is because I wanted to give some mom\u2019s and dads hope.\u00a0 They\u2019re in the throes of attempting to raise children who know God, fear God, and hopefully come into a relationship with Jesus Christ, and to ultimately launch them to make a difference in our world.\u00a0 Your great example of that happened \u2013 I mean it works.\u00a0 A Christian family can reproduce itself in the future.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Christian families doing the things that Christian families know they ought to do \u2013 they provide the very structures of the kind of support, and love; nurture that make it far more likely that a young person \u2013 a child\u00a0 - an adolescent is going to grow into a healthy adulthood.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, here\u2019s another thing, make your home pleasant, make your home loving, make your home where your kids want to bring all their friends to your house.\u00a0 You\u2019ll discover that your kids will never really even think about rebellion because they like being right there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What I want to know is from that background you became ultimately a seminary president, and have tackled a subject\u2014lust.\u00a0 It\u2019s in the book <em>Desire and Deceit, <\/em>and it\u2019s all about sexual tolerance in this culture.\u00a0 Why did you go after this subject of all the issues you could have written about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of our responsibilities as Christians is to answer the questions we are asked.\u00a0 If we\u2019re alive at this time in this culture, if we are indeed engaged with anyone, we\u2019re going to be asked the very questions I have to address in this book.\u00a0 One of my frustrations is that far too many Christians dodge the question \u2013 will not answer it, or they really don\u2019t have the biblical equipment to answer it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You begin this book by really tackling the subject of lust, but you begin it on a personal level with a well-known author who has become very popular today, and a conversation he had with his son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, J. R. R. Tolkien, and it\u2019s an amazing thing isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 It\u2019s a conversation he had by means of a letter that just reminds us; people used to write letters.\u00a0 It\u2019s another way in which you used to able to communicate with people serious things.\u00a0 Parents write letters to your kids.\u00a0 You can say things in print that might be heard in a different way \u2013 it can be read over, and over, and over again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJ. R. R. Tolkien was writing to his son, and this particular son was considering issues of marriage, and sexuality.\u00a0 This very, very Christian father \u2013 he was operating out of a very explicit Christian commitment \u2013 wrote to his son about the proper place of sexuality, what he should look for in a woman, and what he should anticipate in marriage:\u00a0 It\u2019s a really sweet thing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, he talked about a monogamous relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He also admitted that monogamy is an achievement.\u00a0 You know he was very clear in a fallen world like this \u2013 human beings left to their own devices will be anything but monogamous.\u00a0 Monogamy is a fight!\u00a0 Marriage and fighting for God\u2019s holiness, and glory in marriage is a fight.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s the right kind of fight.\u00a0 It\u2019s the kind of fight that should call out the Christian knighthood in a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ve heard people talk about monogamy as being one of the apologetics for the authenticity of the biblical faith, because they\u2019ve said if people got together to invent their own religion monogamy would not be what they\u2019d come up with.\u00a0 No group of guys would get together and say well, let\u2019s invent a religion where monogamy is central, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let\u2019s look at the parallel between monotheism, and monogamy.\u00a0 Here we have the one true and living God.\u00a0\u00a0 He mirrors his very character in the monogamous relationship of marriage:\u00a0 It\u2019s an exclusive relationship.\u00a0 You know we may be the last people on earth who understand what mono means \u2013 it means one and one only!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We\u2019re not given as a culture toward choosing only one thing.\u00a0 We want to have a multiple choice.\u00a0 We want them all!\u00a0 Yet, within the heart of a person is a drive that is called lust that can want things that are not ours away from the one and only \u2013 my wife; to lusting after other women.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t think there\u2019s ever been a time in human history \u2013 maybe in Ancient Rome\u00a0 - there was as sexually saturated a culture as we live in today.\u00a0 I mean if we\u2019re prone toward lust everything in the culture is exciting that in us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, I think it probably is true.\u00a0 All you have to do is go to the ruins of Pompeii, and you\u2019ll discover just how pornographic that culture was.\u00a0 You see this written throughout the ancient world just in terms of the artifacts.\u00a0 By the way just in the last several months what was claimed to be the world\u2019s oldest statue was found, and of course, it\u2019s pornographic.\u00a0 This is what it means to live on the other side of Genesis 3.\u00a0 We are pornographers at heart:\u00a0 That\u2019s where lust enters in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is where Christians many times just don\u2019t speak honestly.\u00a0 There are Christians who are reluctant to speak about sexual desire as if that\u2019s something that\u2019s just off the table.\u00a0 Well, the Bible certainly does.\u00a0 The Bible\u2019s point is that God has given us a gift that comes with an urge \u2013 with a desire \u2013 with all the energy that comes into showing God\u2019s glory in the sexual gift \u2013 in marriage \u2013 in the giving, and receiving of children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reality is that lust is just what happens when sin intersects with the sex drive.\u00a0 That\u2019s the world we live in!\u00a0 Most societies \u2013 in fact the historians Will and Ariel Durant looking at the entire scope of human history said, \u201cThat civilization is only possible when lust is banked like the high banks of a river to keep it from flood stage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we are in a society just as you indicated in which we have basically opened the dam.\u00a0 In terms of our entertainments, in terms of our consumer advertising, in terms of the songs that we hear, and the images that are put before us lust is now the drumbeat of the society that we know.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In fact I heard a quote attributed to Malcolm Muggeridge where he said, \u201cSex is the (ersatz or substitute) religion of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 In a very real sense, we have elevated the whole issue of sex to godlike status, haven\u2019t we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely, and virtually every paganism is sexual.\u00a0 Every worldview has to give an answer to the most basic issues of life.\u00a0 It is going to have to give a narrative of how things started and where things are going.\u00a0 It is going to have to explain how we live with each other and it is going to have to explain some morality.\u00a0 The interesting thing is that virtually every society even those that are distant from the knowledge of the gospel have gotten to monogamous marriage \u2013 have you noticed that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words the institution of marriage is written into creation, and the Bible tells us exactly that.\u00a0 But, we\u2019re living in a time when we\u2019ve just broken all the defenses down and we\u2019re celebrating the breaking down of those defenses.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk for a moment about how a mom and a dad should talk to their son or daughter about the issue of sexual pleasure and lust.\u00a0 You have already said it.\u00a0 The Christian community doesn\u2019t seem to have a good plumb line on how we\u2019re doing this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, I have a letter on my desk I just opened this morning from a woman who attended one of our Weekend to Remember Marriage Conferences and was offended that we publicly had a session \u2013 a one hour session at our conference where we talked about human sexuality, sex drive, and two people becoming one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we do that at a very tasteful way.\u00a0 There isn\u2019t graphic language as such, but we do talk about sexual pleasure.\u00a0 As a father and a mother talk to a young lad or a young lady, how would you coach them to tackle the subject of sexual pleasure, and of lust?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I think one of the problems with the way most Christian parents are taught to approach this is there\u2019s a focus on the talk:\u00a0 One great talk that\u2019s supposed to be the parent\u2019s responsibility to deal with this issue.\u00a0 Well, the reality is there\u2019s no way to cover all these things in one talk.\u00a0 The child\u2019s developing through different developmental stages.\u00a0 I really would suggest at least an annual intentional conversation especially with a father and a son about this and a mother and a daughter about this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn order to kind of say well at this stage here\u2019s what I need you to think about, and when you\u2019re talking to a six year old \u2013 a six year old needs to know something about how babies come to be.\u00a0 A six year old does not need to be talked to about how to have lust!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy the time you get to a 16 year old, he already knows where the baby\u2019s coming from.\u00a0 You\u2019d better be talking to him about how to handle this thing that\u2019s been put within him by the Creator. It is going to be either the source of great holiness in his life, or just absolute sin, depravity, and destruction in his life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, how would you define lust then to a 16 year old boy \u2013 father to son?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Lust is sexual desire directed toward the wrong object \u2013 period \u2013 that\u2019s it!\u00a0 It\u2019s directed toward the wrong object.\u00a0 This shows us just how bracing and challenging the Christian truth claim is.\u00a0 The Christian truth claim I would say to a 16 year old boy\u00a0 God has given you this gift.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to wake you up in the middle of the night.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to shake you several times during the day, and it\u2019s telling you \u2013 you are meant to be married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to grow up, be mature, and do whatever it takes for you to be able to make the kind of commitment you need to make to a young woman who is worthy of marriage.\u00a0 You need to be faithful to her.\u00a0 God\u2019s going to give you the fulfillment of this gift and He\u2019s not going to leave you alone until you get there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe problem is in our society we have people saying that there\u2019s no reason to wait until marriage.\u00a0 Your focus should be on just whatever sexual pleasure you can find.\u00a0 So, they are basically being enticed into lust.\u00a0 The Christian dad has to say to his son, \u201cBuddy, here\u2019s the deal.\u00a0 Growing up means you have to figure out how to channel your energy in this part of life until you can get to where you say \u201cI Do\u201d to a woman who will be your bride.\u00a0 Then, you pour your life into her, and yes going to have a sexual component and there\u2019s no reason to be embarrassed about talking about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, after you get married young man, you need to understand you will still have to practice the discipline of saying no to your sex drive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, absolutely!\u00a0 Let\u2019s take this 16, 17-year-old young man, and you say, \u201cTiger, here\u2019s the deal.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to struggle with this.\u201d\u00a0 We really lie to them if we say, hey, you\u2019re going to reach an age where it\u2019s no longer a struggle.\u00a0 I can take you into nursing homes where you would have plenty of testimony from elderly men saying, \u201cI\u2019m still 16.\u00a0 It\u2019s still a struggle.\u00a0 God help me\u201d!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think there are a lot of young men who are not yet married who are thinking when I get married, then the struggle will be over, because I will have the opportunity in marriage to experience sexual pleasure only to find themselves surprised that they are still tempted towards sex outside of marriage, or towards self stimulation and things like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We have also broken down so many of the defenses where quite frankly a married man has to be just as careful as an unmarried man about not allowing things into his life that are going to compromise who he is and what he\u2019s called to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I could not agree with you more!\u00a0 I think what I\u2019m hearing you say is we need to invade a teenagers life with straight talk.\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about how he\u2019s wired for 220 volts, and how it does wake him up in the middle of the night, and several times during the day, and that it\u2019s still good.\u00a0 He shouldn\u2019t be made to feel dirty, or evil, or wicked because of that \u2013 that\u2019s a gift from God.\u00a0 It\u2019s the expression of that gift, and it\u2019s the expression before you get married, and after you get married at that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou mentioned in your book Al, something that I wanted to just make sure you explained to some of our female listeners at this point.\u00a0 You think that some women don\u2019t fully understand why pornography is such an attraction to men.\u00a0 Share with our listeners why that\u2019s so important for ladies to understand.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, you know you folks do such a good job at teaching this in your seminars and conferences, but men and women are different, and it\u2019s not an accident.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just some kind of sociological patterning; it\u2019s not just some kind of psychological profile you pick up from here or there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we can even understand some of the reasons why men and women are different but here\u2019s one of the key issues when it comes to pornography:\u00a0 Men are visually stimulated \u2013 the whole sexual process for men generally starts right in the eyes.\u00a0 Something becomes an issue of notice; it changes from notice to amazement, from amazement to appreciation, from appreciation to sexual desire.\u00a0 By the way that takes place in a lot shorter time than it took me to say it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s just the reality \u2013 you know by the time a boy\u2019s about 13 or 14 years old, he\u2019s becoming aware of this, and the girls sitting in class are not.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read this the other day in which just in terms of secular literature\u00a0 - this wasn\u2019t coming from a Christian perspective, but it was saying, here\u2019s how young women, and young men of college age fantasize differently.\u00a0 It said that men\u2019s fantasies are very sexual.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt said the kind of fantasies that the young women talked about were of holding hands at the beach, of going out and doing the shopping together.\u00a0 Here\u2019s one that really touches the heart \u2013 of the young man to whom she\u2019s attracted \u2013 holding a baby, and cherishing it.\u00a0 Now that\u2019s sweet, but that\u2019s a very different picture than what he\u2019s thinking about.\u00a0 He\u2019s thinking about how you get to the baby \u2013 he\u2019s not so much thinking about the baby.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think one of the reasons why God made young men the way they are is because otherwise young men would never grow up.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the points I make in my book.\u00a0 The sex drive in part is to say to a young man you\u2019re supposed to get to somewhere \u2013 there\u2019s a destination for you, and by the way you\u2019re going to have to shave and take a shower to get there.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to have to get a job, and you\u2019re going to have to earn the credible affection of a young woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s back to what George Gilder said in the marriage years ago when he said, \u201cIf this socializes a man for a woman to say you\u2019re not going to be able to have sexual pleasure until you get married, and you\u2019d better become a social, civil, person if you want to marry me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right, and when women lower take that away as a requirement, you basically say to boys you can be a teenager forever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes and this whole revolution started back when I was a teenager \u2013 in the 60\u2019s, and 70\u2019s-\u2013the sexual revolution.\u00a0 Can a civilization outlive this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, there is no great model for a civilization regaining its sanity without some kind of calamity \u2013 you know war, poverty, pestilence.\u00a0 We certainly don\u2019t pray for those things to be required here.\u00a0 But, you know my point is to Christians:\u00a0 We can\u2019t start with a civilization; we have to start with our families, our marriages, our children, and our church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe really have to start here and say, you know every single marriage that is monogamous, and honoring to God is a little light shining in a sea of darkness.\u00a0 Every family rightly ordered to the glory of God is an oasis in the middle of a moral dessert.\u00a0 There\u2019s a great testimony to the gospel of Christ there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Maybe we can avoid calamity, and war, and pestilence as the course correction.\u00a0 Maybe revival and reformation can be the course correcting influence that will cause us to extend the life of the civilization.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Mohler:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We certainly better not think that the society is going to reform the church.\u00a0 We better not be thinking society\u2019s going to do the dirty work of moral correction of which we will be the beneficiary.\u00a0 The church is going to have to be where this starts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The real work of, I think reforming a civilization begins in its most basic unit:\u00a0 The family!\u00a0 That\u2019s why we come alongside mom\u2019s and dad\u2019s and cheer them on in the process of not only keeping their vows, and remaining faithful to one another, but also implanting within their children a vision, and a hope, and an expectancy that they can experience that when they get married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and that\u2019s why we recommend to folks that they get copies of books like the one Dr. Mohler\u2019s written called <em>Desire and Deceit <\/em>because if we\u2019re going to think biblically about these issues it helps for us to be mentored by someone who has invested a lot of hours, and a lot of study, and a lot of prayer in a subject like this to provide some guidance.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s what you\u2019ve done in the book <em>Desire and Deceit <\/em>which we have in our FamilyLife Today Resource Center.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also want to encourage listeners to get a copy of a book that your friend C.
