Then I went to a \u2018Bulldog Club\u2019 in Albany.\u00a0 Sherwood Baptist Church is in Albany, Georgia and then I got approached by\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alex\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alex Kendrick?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alex Kendrick!\u00a0\u00a0 Anyway, Alex came to see me.\u00a0 I was right at the head table and he walked up and he said, \u201cHow\u2019d you like \u2018Flywheel?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I said, \u201cI liked it!\u201d\u00a0 It has probably been a month had passed or something, and then he said, \u201cWe are going to do another film.\u00a0 Would you be interested in playing a small role in it?\u201d I said, \u201cYes, I think I\u2019ll do that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I flew \u2026 just one day they sent a plane and I flew to Albany.\u00a0 I did the locker room scene during the day; we waited until it got dark, and did the scene in the stadium.\u00a0 That was it.\u00a0 I was in and out of there in about five, six hours and then it was probably another two years before the movie actually came out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But they didn\u2019t call to see if you wanted a role in the next movie? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, they didn\u2019t ask me about \u201cFireproof.\u201d\u00a0 I am very limited\u2026.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you think it is over then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The acting career is over?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did get invited to another one, but I had to turn that one down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s ask your wife, Katharyn, \u201cDo you think his acting career is over, Katharyn?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I think if that is something he wanted to do he could definitely be very good at it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 The encourager!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0Well, in case our listeners don\u2019t know who Mark Richt is, and his wife, Katharyn, he mentioned a \u2018Bulldog Club.\u201d\u00a0 If you are still not tracking with us, it is the Georgia Bulldogs!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This has nothing to do with kennels or with dog show stuff?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No!\u00a0\u00a0 He plays a little football at Georgia, and our listeners know, I am a Razorback!\u00a0 I wore a Tennessee tie in here today, so I was nearly rejected in the headquarters here of the Bulldogs when I walked in.\u00a0 Mark was named the SEC coach of the year a couple of times.\u00a0 His record is he has won 80 games in eight years.\u00a0 He averages 10 wins and 2 losses in the SEC.\u00a0 That is remarkable!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is tough to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely remarkable!\u00a0 For a number I have admired you as a leader and a coach.\u00a0 I have had the privilege of meeting Katharyn a few minutes ago.\u00a0 There is a lot going on in your lives that we just want to talk about.\u00a0 I want to start with you, Mark, just about where you grew up.\u00a0 There was a little competition, I understand, in the family that you grew up in.\u00a0 Is that true, did you grow up competing? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark: <\/strong>\u00a0Well, we did!\u00a0 We competed for food, mostly.\u00a0 I was born in Omaha, Nebraska and ended up in Colorado by the time I was about seven and by the age 13 moved to Boca Raton, Florida.\u00a0 I went to high school there.\u00a0 I\u2019d say we were pretty competitive in everything we did, whether it is basketball, football, or whatever it might be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where did you fit in the family? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was number two son.\u00a0 My older brother, Lou, was two years older than me.\u00a0 My younger brother, Craig, was two years younger than me.\u00a0 Mickie, or Michelle, is my sister and is two years younger than Craig.\u00a0 And then Nichole, or Nicki, is about four years younger than Mickie.\u00a0 So we had five.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You moved to south Florida and you were noticed by the University of Miami as a quarterback and ended up going there.\u00a0 Having to sit on the bench \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \u2026at the University of Miami.\u00a0 I know you have a hard time believing this coach, but I played a little basketball\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026in high school.\u00a0 I sat on the bench.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you played very little. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I played very little basketball.\u00a0 Very little basketball! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can relate to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really hurt to sit on the bench. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I know it does hurt. Especially becoming a coach after the fact and living through all of the things that you live through as a head coach and\u00a0 having to make all the decisions you need to make.\u00a0 Everything Coach Schnellenberger did made a whole lot more sense as I became a coach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had a stint in the NFL and then ended up going to Florida State University and becoming a coach there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to talk a moment about your spiritual background up to that point at FSU.\u00a0 What kind of home did you grow up in, what were your spiritual roots?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 We grew up in a family that went to a Catholic church. I guess I was baptized as a baby.\u00a0 I went through confirmation and that was about as far as we got.\u00a0\u00a0 When we moved to Boca Raton, we quit going to church.\u00a0 Then after that just football kind of became my god; I suppose you could say,\u00a0 it basically became my life and what I believed in the most.\u00a0\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t even sure if I believed in God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a college roommate named John Peesley; he was only a summer school roommate.\u00a0 The regular season roommates were different than the summer school roommates.\u00a0 Something happened to John.\u00a0 John was a year older than me and probably better at the night time games than I was; he had a reputation for that.\u00a0 And then something changed with him, he became a believer.\u00a0 He had accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.\u00a0 So, here he is fresh off of that experience and I am in the room with him and he is spending time with me reading God\u2019s word and sharing what had happened to him.\u00a0 I saw a miraculous change in this guy.\u00a0 The thing that I saw that attracted me the most was the peace that he had that he never had before.\u00a0 I was really attracted to that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You did not have that peace?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh no!\u00a0 I was a mess!\u00a0 As the clock was ticking towards school starting again I was really contemplating on becoming a Christian and having what he had.\u00a0 Three things really stopped me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one; I believe I was really concerned about what all my friends would think; my regular roommates and my girlfriend, what she might think.\u00a0 I was thinking\u2026I was really more concerned about what they thought than what God thought.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother reason why I didn\u2019t do it is because I felt like in order to be a Christian, if I am going to claim to be a Christian, than I am going to be perfect from that point forward.\u00a0 And the third reason why I didn\u2019t become a Christian at that point I was still very self centered.\u00a0\u00a0 I still wanted, to possibly be a pro quarterback..\u00a0 I still wanted what I wanted.\u00a0 And I was afraid that if I turn my life over to God than He might send me off on a mission trip somewhere and I\u2019d never come back.\u00a0 I was really afraid that I wouldn\u2019t be able to have what I wanted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I put it off until I did go to Florida State and in the year 2 of my graduate assistantship a young man by the name of Pablo Lopez, who was a big tackle, I think he was a sophomore, destined to play NFL ball a beautiful athlete and a wonderful kid.\u00a0 He ended up going to a party on campus, to make a long story short, he got shot and killed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next day, Coach Bobby Bowden, had a team meeting, players only.\u00a0 I happened to be there because I was taking roll and making sure the doors were secure.\u00a0 Coach Bowden talked to the team about Pablo and about what had happened and that he didn\u2019t know Pablo well enough to know where Pablo was spending eternity at that moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo make a long story short, he shared his faith, he shared about the gospel of Jesus Christ and that at age 26, Coach Bowden gave his life to Christ.\u00a0 He understood that he was a sinner and that God was real, He created us, and that Jesus was His son.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 death on the cross paid the price for his sin, and allowed him to be cleansed spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He actually pointed to a chair to an empty chair.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\u00a0 He got to the end of sharing the gospel and he said, \u201cMen, you guys are 18 to 22 years old, ya\u2019ll think you are going to live forever.\u00a0 Pablo thought he was going to live forever.\u00a0 He pointed to Pablo\u2019s seat and he said, \u201cPablo used to sit right there and now he is gone.\u201d\u00a0 If that had been you last night instead of Pablo, do you know where you would spend eternity?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere I am in the back of the room hearing what he is saying to the players; all the seeds that were planted in the dorm room, back in Miami, really came to fruition.\u00a0 I was like, I know where I am going, and it was not a very good place.\u00a0 So, Coach Bowden invited the players to come see him if they wanted to come talk about it.\u00a0 He said, \u201cMy door is always open.\u201d\u00a0 So, the next morning I walked in there and said, \u201cCoach, I want to accept Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 I prayed and he prayed with me to receive Christ right there in his office.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you were how old at the time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was 26.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The same age as Coach Bowden?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes sir!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, Coach, as you were sharing that I thought, right here in the middle of the broadcast; what I\u2019s like you to do is just invite a listener who is listening right now; because there is a lot of listeners, listening, and there is some\u2026 because of this economy, because of hardship things they are facing, and their lives are a mess. They would like peace as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t want to wait to the end.\u00a0 I want to get to it right now!\u00a0 Would you just share with a listener what they need to do right now and lead them in a prayer similar to what you did in Coach Bowden\u2019s office?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Sure!\u00a0 I think the main thing is that where the peace comes from is knowing that once we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior; our spirit and soul which is the only part of our being that is going to live forever, is cleansed and that will never change.\u00a0 A lot of times we get confused because we become Christians and we know we are a new creation, but we still sin.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell that is because we live in our flesh.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the thing that is made perfect is our spirit and our soul.\u00a0 That is for all of eternity, so I know that no matter what happens on this earth when I take my last breath, I know I will be with God for eternity.\u00a0 That is where the peace comes in because there is going to be hard times.\u00a0 That is just part of life!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And this life is just really the pre-season. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 God allows hard times so we can mature as Christians and so we can be prepared for what great things He has for us down the road.\u00a0 I see that as I look back on my life.\u00a0 All I did when I saw Coach Bowden is I said, \u201cCoach I give up!\u00a0 I give up trying to do it in my own strength and my own power and I need Jesus.\u00a0 I am tired of fighting it.\u00a0 I am tired of faking it and I truly want to have that peace that my friend John Peesley had and that you have, and hopefully Pablo had.\u201d\u00a0 So, he just asked me to pray and I guess we could pray right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 And he just basically said, \u201cDear God, I love You and I know that You created me.\u00a0 I know that You created me and I know You created me for a purpose and that is to fellowship with You and to praise You.\u00a0 I want to accept Your Son.\u2026the gift of Your Son Jesus\u2019 death for the forgiveness of my sins where I can be with You for all of eternity.\u00a0 Amen!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The person who yields their life to Christ at that point, He doesn\u2019t cast them out.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t turn them away!\u00a0 He welcomes that person in because no one is perfect.\u00a0 We all need a Savior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is why we had the Ten Commandments, people think the Law was given to \u2026\u2019 If I can obey these Laws then I get to go heaven.\u2019\u00a0 And in some ways that is true, but the bottom line is none of us can go through life without sinning.\u00a0 We all fall short!\u00a0 The Law was given to help us understand that we are in need of a Savior. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And a little bit later, Bob, will share with our listeners; those who made that commitment to Christ, a free book that we will give them that will explain more of that relationship and some very basic, fundamental things that they need to do.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What you are saying though, Coach; I want to make sure I heard you right, that when the camera is on you and you are yelling at a referee or the umpire\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d never do that!\u00a0 I rarely do that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You do!\u00a0 I have watched you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Every once in a while.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not often!\u00a0 Not often!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is intense conversation!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>It is intense fellowship!\u00a0 Truthfully, I am kind of kidding you about that point, but one of the things that I admire about all of you coaches in football today is the camera is on you all the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah they do!\u00a0\u00a0 They can\u2019t wait to catch you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If the camera was on me and I was doing my job, oh my goodness, how much forgiveness would I need?\u00a0 So you do better than I would do, trust me.\u00a0 But the point is you know you are forgiven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yes!\u00a0 Well I don\u2019t know if it is a sin to yell at officials, because it depends on what you are saying to him.\u00a0 It is just like when you coach\u2026.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 You are correcting a wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly!\u00a0 Or asking a question? You might be asking a question.\u00a0 Just like I tell our players you know, sometimes when we yell they think we are yelling at them; we are barking out instruction quickly because we don\u2019t have time to stop the practice, put our arm around you, and whisper in your ear and say, \u201c Hey son, why did you do that on that play?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 You have got to coach fast and go on to the next point.\u00a0 You just got to get over it.\u00a0 But when I do sin, that sin of coarse was forgiven at the cross.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know I am going to ask you to do something special, here; I know Coach Bowden has had a profound impact in your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 No question about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I want Bob to do is I want Bob to share how they can get a booklet we are talking about.\u00a0 And then in a moment, what I am going to ask you to do is I want you to come back and I want you to give a verbal tribute to Coach Bobby Bowden. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would love to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now some of our listeners don\u2019t know who he is, so before Bob shares, tell them a little bit of who he is and kind of what some of his accomplishments are as a coach.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right!\u00a0 First of all, most people who know Coach Bowden know that he is the second \u2018winningest\u2019 coach in the history of college football behind Joe\u00a0 Paterno just by a couple of games.\u00a0 And they are still battling it out to see who will end up with the most.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 do you have a prediction?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not to be morbid, but my prediction is it will go on until one of them passes and then the other guy takes the lead and he know there is no way he can catch up and then he will retire.\u00a0 That is my guess.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know him as a man who is a much better man than he is a coach.\u00a0 This is very, very difficult to do.\u00a0 He loves his Lord first and foremost.\u00a0 He loves his family.\u00a0 And then he loves his coaches and players. Mark?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t go that far.\u00a0 I was in a movie.\u00a0 I think I was in there maybe three minutes with \u201cFacing the Giants,\u201d was the movie that I was invited to be a part of.\u00a0 I enjoyed every minute of it and \u2018gosh\u2019 I have probably watched that movie 10, 20 times now, I have to see what I look like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you got a call from the guys at Sherwood Baptist and they said, \u201cWe would like you to play a role in our movie\u2026.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, what happened was they mailed me a copy of their first movie which was \u201cFlywheel.\u201d\u00a0 They asked me to watch it.\u00a0 I watched it, privately; actually on an airplane ride I stuck it in a computer and watched it.\u00a0 I was moved by it.\u00a0 Loved it!\u00a0 Then I said, I am going to show this to my family.\u00a0 We loved it!\u00a0 That was kind of the end of it for awhile. Then I went to a \u2018Bulldog Club\u2019 in Albany.\u00a0 Sherwood Baptist Church is in Albany, Georgia and then I got approached by\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alex\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alex Kendrick?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alex Kendrick!\u00a0\u00a0 Anyway, Alex came to see me.\u00a0 I was right at the head table and he walked up and he said, \u201cHow\u2019d you like \u2018Flywheel?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I said, \u201cI liked it!\u201d\u00a0 It has probably been a month had passed or something, and then he said, \u201cWe are going to do another film.\u00a0 Would you be interested in playing a small role in it?\u201d I said, \u201cYes, I think I\u2019ll do that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I flew \u2026 just one day they sent a plane and I flew to Albany.\u00a0 I did the locker room scene during the day; we waited until it got dark, and did the scene in the stadium.\u00a0 That was it.\u00a0 I was in and out of there in about five, six hours and then it was probably another two years before the movie actually came out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But they didn\u2019t call to see if you wanted a role in the next movie? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, they didn\u2019t ask me about \u201cFireproof.\u201d\u00a0 I am very limited\u2026.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you think it is over then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The acting career is over?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did get invited to another one, but I had to turn that one down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s ask your wife, Katharyn, \u201cDo you think his acting career is over, Katharyn?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I think if that is something he wanted to do he could definitely be very good at it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 The encourager!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0Well, in case our listeners don\u2019t know who Mark Richt is, and his wife, Katharyn, he mentioned a \u2018Bulldog Club.\u201d\u00a0 If you are still not tracking with us, it is the Georgia Bulldogs!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This has nothing to do with kennels or with dog show stuff?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No!\u00a0\u00a0 He plays a little football at Georgia, and our listeners know, I am a Razorback!\u00a0 I wore a Tennessee tie in here today, so I was nearly rejected in the headquarters here of the Bulldogs when I walked in.\u00a0 Mark was named the SEC coach of the year a couple of times.\u00a0 His record is he has won 80 games in eight years.\u00a0 He averages 10 wins and 2 losses in the SEC.\u00a0 That is remarkable!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is tough to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely remarkable!\u00a0 For a number I have admired you as a leader and a coach.\u00a0 I have had the privilege of meeting Katharyn a few minutes ago.\u00a0 There is a lot going on in your lives that we just want to talk about.\u00a0 I want to start with you, Mark, just about where you grew up.\u00a0 There was a little competition, I understand, in the family that you grew up in.\u00a0 Is that true, did you grow up competing? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark: <\/strong>\u00a0Well, we did!\u00a0 We competed for food, mostly.\u00a0 I was born in Omaha, Nebraska and ended up in Colorado by the time I was about seven and by the age 13 moved to Boca Raton, Florida.\u00a0 I went to high school there.\u00a0 I\u2019d say we were pretty competitive in everything we did, whether it is basketball, football, or whatever it might be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where did you fit in the family? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was number two son.\u00a0 My older brother, Lou, was two years older than me.\u00a0 My younger brother, Craig, was two years younger than me.\u00a0 Mickie, or Michelle, is my sister and is two years younger than Craig.\u00a0 And then Nichole, or Nicki, is about four years younger than Mickie.\u00a0 So we had five.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You moved to south Florida and you were noticed by the University of Miami as a quarterback and ended up going there.\u00a0 Having to sit on the bench \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \u2026at the University of Miami.\u00a0 I know you have a hard time believing this coach, but I played a little basketball\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026in high school.\u00a0 I sat on the bench.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you played very little. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I played very little basketball.\u00a0 Very little basketball! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can relate to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really hurt to sit on the bench. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I know it does hurt. Especially becoming a coach after the fact and living through all of the things that you live through as a head coach and\u00a0 having to make all the decisions you need to make.\u00a0 Everything Coach Schnellenberger did made a whole lot more sense as I became a coach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had a stint in the NFL and then ended up going to Florida State University and becoming a coach there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to talk a moment about your spiritual background up to that point at FSU.\u00a0 What kind of home did you grow up in, what were your spiritual roots?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 We grew up in a family that went to a Catholic church. I guess I was baptized as a baby.\u00a0 I went through confirmation and that was about as far as we got.\u00a0\u00a0 When we moved to Boca Raton, we quit going to church.\u00a0 Then after that just football kind of became my god; I suppose you could say,\u00a0 it basically became my life and what I believed in the most.\u00a0\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t even sure if I believed in God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a college roommate named John Peesley; he was only a summer school roommate.\u00a0 The regular season roommates were different than the summer school roommates.\u00a0 Something happened to John.\u00a0 John was a year older than me and probably better at the night time games than I was; he had a reputation for that.\u00a0 And then something changed with him, he became a believer.\u00a0 He had accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.\u00a0 So, here he is fresh off of that experience and I am in the room with him and he is spending time with me reading God\u2019s word and sharing what had happened to him.\u00a0 I saw a miraculous change in this guy.\u00a0 The thing that I saw that attracted me the most was the peace that he had that he never had before.\u00a0 I was really attracted to that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You did not have that peace?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh no!\u00a0 I was a mess!\u00a0 As the clock was ticking towards school starting again I was really contemplating on becoming a Christian and having what he had.\u00a0 Three things really stopped me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one; I believe I was really concerned about what all my friends would think; my regular roommates and my girlfriend, what she might think.\u00a0 I was thinking\u2026I was really more concerned about what they thought than what God thought.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother reason why I didn\u2019t do it is because I felt like in order to be a Christian, if I am going to claim to be a Christian, than I am going to be perfect from that point forward.\u00a0 And the third reason why I didn\u2019t become a Christian at that point I was still very self centered.\u00a0\u00a0 I still wanted, to possibly be a pro quarterback..\u00a0 I still wanted what I wanted.\u00a0 And I was afraid that if I turn my life over to God than He might send me off on a mission trip somewhere and I\u2019d never come back.\u00a0 I was really afraid that I wouldn\u2019t be able to have what I wanted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I put it off until I did go to Florida State and in the year 2 of my graduate assistantship a young man by the name of Pablo Lopez, who was a big tackle, I think he was a sophomore, destined to play NFL ball a beautiful athlete and a wonderful kid.\u00a0 He ended up going to a party on campus, to make a long story short, he got shot and killed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next day, Coach Bobby Bowden, had a team meeting, players only.\u00a0 I happened to be there because I was taking roll and making sure the doors were secure.\u00a0 Coach Bowden talked to the team about Pablo and about what had happened and that he didn\u2019t know Pablo well enough to know where Pablo was spending eternity at that moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo make a long story short, he shared his faith, he shared about the gospel of Jesus Christ and that at age 26, Coach Bowden gave his life to Christ.\u00a0 He understood that he was a sinner and that God was real, He created us, and that Jesus was His son.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 death on the cross paid the price for his sin, and allowed him to be cleansed spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He actually pointed to a chair to an empty chair.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\u00a0 He got to the end of sharing the gospel and he said, \u201cMen, you guys are 18 to 22 years old, ya\u2019ll think you are going to live forever.\u00a0 Pablo thought he was going to live forever.\u00a0 He pointed to Pablo\u2019s seat and he said, \u201cPablo used to sit right there and now he is gone.\u201d\u00a0 If that had been you last night instead of Pablo, do you know where you would spend eternity?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere I am in the back of the room hearing what he is saying to the players; all the seeds that were planted in the dorm room, back in Miami, really came to fruition.\u00a0 I was like, I know where I am going, and it was not a very good place.\u00a0 So, Coach Bowden invited the players to come see him if they wanted to come talk about it.\u00a0 He said, \u201cMy door is always open.\u201d\u00a0 So, the next morning I walked in there and said, \u201cCoach, I want to accept Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 I prayed and he prayed with me to receive Christ right there in his office.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you were how old at the time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was 26.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The same age as Coach Bowden?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes sir!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, Coach, as you were sharing that I thought, right here in the middle of the broadcast; what I\u2019s like you to do is just invite a listener who is listening right now; because there is a lot of listeners, listening, and there is some\u2026 because of this economy, because of hardship things they are facing, and their lives are a mess. They would like peace as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t want to wait to the end.\u00a0 I want to get to it right now!\u00a0 Would you just share with a listener what they need to do right now and lead them in a prayer similar to what you did in Coach Bowden\u2019s office?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Sure!\u00a0 I think the main thing is that where the peace comes from is knowing that once we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior; our spirit and soul which is the only part of our being that is going to live forever, is cleansed and that will never change.\u00a0 A lot of times we get confused because we become Christians and we know we are a new creation, but we still sin.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell that is because we live in our flesh.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the thing that is made perfect is our spirit and our soul.\u00a0 That is for all of eternity, so I know that no matter what happens on this earth when I take my last breath, I know I will be with God for eternity.\u00a0 That is where the peace comes in because there is going to be hard times.\u00a0 That is just part of life!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And this life is just really the pre-season. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 God allows hard times so we can mature as Christians and so we can be prepared for what great things He has for us down the road.\u00a0 I see that as I look back on my life.\u00a0 All I did when I saw Coach Bowden is I said, \u201cCoach I give up!\u00a0 I give up trying to do it in my own strength and my own power and I need Jesus.\u00a0 I am tired of fighting it.\u00a0 I am tired of faking it and I truly want to have that peace that my friend John Peesley had and that you have, and hopefully Pablo had.\u201d\u00a0 So, he just asked me to pray and I guess we could pray right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 And he just basically said, \u201cDear God, I love You and I know that You created me.\u00a0 I know that You created me and I know You created me for a purpose and that is to fellowship with You and to praise You.\u00a0 I want to accept Your Son.\u2026the gift of Your Son Jesus\u2019 death for the forgiveness of my sins where I can be with You for all of eternity.\u00a0 Amen!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The person who yields their life to Christ at that point, He doesn\u2019t cast them out.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t turn them away!\u00a0 He welcomes that person in because no one is perfect.\u00a0 We all need a Savior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is why we had the Ten Commandments, people think the Law was given to \u2026\u2019 If I can obey these Laws then I get to go heaven.\u2019\u00a0 And in some ways that is true, but the bottom line is none of us can go through life without sinning.\u00a0 We all fall short!\u00a0 The Law was given to help us understand that we are in need of a Savior. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And a little bit later, Bob, will share with our listeners; those who made that commitment to Christ, a free book that we will give them that will explain more of that relationship and some very basic, fundamental things that they need to do.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What you are saying though, Coach; I want to make sure I heard you right, that when the camera is on you and you are yelling at a referee or the umpire\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d never do that!\u00a0 I rarely do that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You do!\u00a0 I have watched you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Every once in a while.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not often!\u00a0 Not often!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is intense conversation!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>It is intense fellowship!\u00a0 Truthfully, I am kind of kidding you about that point, but one of the things that I admire about all of you coaches in football today is the camera is on you all the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah they do!\u00a0\u00a0 They can\u2019t wait to catch you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If the camera was on me and I was doing my job, oh my goodness, how much forgiveness would I need?\u00a0 So you do better than I would do, trust me.\u00a0 But the point is you know you are forgiven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yes!\u00a0 Well I don\u2019t know if it is a sin to yell at officials, because it depends on what you are saying to him.\u00a0 It is just like when you coach\u2026.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 You are correcting a wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly!\u00a0 Or asking a question? You might be asking a question.\u00a0 Just like I tell our players you know, sometimes when we yell they think we are yelling at them; we are barking out instruction quickly because we don\u2019t have time to stop the practice, put our arm around you, and whisper in your ear and say, \u201c Hey son, why did you do that on that play?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 You have got to coach fast and go on to the next point.\u00a0 You just got to get over it.\u00a0 But when I do sin, that sin of coarse was forgiven at the cross.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know I am going to ask you to do something special, here; I know Coach Bowden has had a profound impact in your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 No question about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I want Bob to do is I want Bob to share how they can get a booklet we are talking about.\u00a0 And then in a moment, what I am going to ask you to do is I want you to come back and I want you to give a verbal tribute to Coach Bobby Bowden. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would love to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now some of our listeners don\u2019t know who he is, so before Bob shares, tell them a little bit of who he is and kind of what some of his accomplishments are as a coach.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right!\u00a0 First of all, most people who know Coach Bowden know that he is the second \u2018winningest\u2019 coach in the history of college football behind Joe\u00a0 Paterno just by a couple of games.\u00a0 And they are still battling it out to see who will end up with the most.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 do you have a prediction?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not to be morbid, but my prediction is it will go on until one of them passes and then the other guy takes the lead and he know there is no way he can catch up and then he will retire.\u00a0 That is my guess.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know him as a man who is a much better man than he is a coach.\u00a0 This is very, very difficult to do.\u00a0 He loves his Lord first and foremost.\u00a0 He loves his family.\u00a0 And then he loves his coaches and players.
