I certainly was starting to think why did I get so invested?\u00a0 Why did I let that summer fling turn into a marriage?\u00a0 At what point did I just surrender the rest of my life to being unequally yoked?\u00a0 I really did think that after we were married things would change.\u00a0 That he would realize the responsibility and weight of being a husband and the party days would take a back seat.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, August 11, 2009.\u00a0 Our host is the president of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I am Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear today that Matt Magill\u2019s party days didn\u2019t slow down after he got married.\u00a0 In fact, they got him arrested. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>!\u00a0 Thanks for joining us!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you had to give counsel to parents\u2014let\u2019s say a mom and a dad came to you and they said our daughter has started dating this guy and we\u2019re a little worried about what we are seeing.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know whether we should step in.\u00a0 We don\u2019t want to damage the relationship with our daughter but we are really concerned.\u00a0 She seems head over heels.\u00a0 In fact, we are concerned that they may be physically involved with one another.\u00a0 What kind of counsel would you give them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Before the handoff at the altar in my opinion a mom and a dad have not only the right to speak into their son or daughter\u2019s life but they have the responsibility.\u00a0 For us on more than one occasion Barbara and I had to call some time outs for our adult children as they were seriously dating someone and about to make what we would consider a mistake.\u00a0 Either marrying someone who was not strong enough and that may have been spiritually or in leadership to love and honor and protect and care for.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you some of the most frightening moments as a parent occurred when we felt like we put the relationship on the line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember with our daughter Ashley driving back from Mississippi one time having had a conversation with her and I felt like this could cost us our relationship.\u00a0 We may sever our ties because Bob, to the point of your question, we basically told our daughter this young man is not right for you.\u00a0 We want you to know we\u2019ve prayed about it and talked about it.\u00a0 Having said that, I have this warning for parents--you better be careful about firing that bullet very often.\u00a0 That is a heavy thing to say to an adult child who may be involved sexually.\u00a0 You may not be able to turn their hearts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFortunately for our daughter that was not the case and she turned away from the relationship and ultimately married a fine man who we did bless in that relationship.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking about the responsibility of parents to look into the lives of their children and I can\u2019t help but wonder if the couple that we have with us today couldn\u2019t have used a mom or a dad stepping into the relationship perhaps with some pretty potent words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the reason I brought it up because the story we\u2019ve been hearing this week from our guests is that Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your story was that the two of you met while you were doing theatre in college.\u00a0 Megan you grew up in a Christian home.\u00a0 Matt you grew up in kind of a nominal church going home right?\u00a0 By the time you were in college Megan, you\u2019d backslidden from your faith.\u00a0 Along comes the cute new lead boy in the musical and you guys fell right into a relationship with one another and you fell right into one another\u2019s arms literally.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Summer loving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 At the point two and a half years later where Matt proposes and you say yes the question that was on my mind was I wonder what Megan\u2019s parents think about Matt.\u00a0 I wonder if they have said anything to Megan and raised any concerns.\u00a0 Had that been any part of the conversation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely, on several occasions.\u00a0 They loved Matt.\u00a0 He was\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Eddie Haskell\u2026I was a charmer with a hidden agenda but not in a deceptive way.\u00a0 I knew what I wanted but I also knew that I was in a culture of Christianity and I needed to say the right things to get a ring of Megan\u2019s finger and get her out of Texas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Did your parents see through all of that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 They did.\u00a0 In fact you guys had some pretty intense conversations where there were lots of tears and some raised voices.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, especially with your mom.\u00a0 She would say you\u2019ve got to believe that Christ is the son of God and I would say but how can he be the son of God and man both?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 He and Mom would get in to these kind of theological debates where she was just broken hearted that he didn\u2019t believe.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did she have any idea that he smoked dope?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So no idea that he\u2019d done any crystal meth?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, goodness, no.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Any idea that her sweet little daughter was doing any of this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, goodness, no. No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What about sleeping together?\u00a0 Did they have any idea about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would like to think that they were probably not as na\u00efve as I thought they were at the time.\u00a0 We certainly didn\u2019t talk about it.\u00a0 I will say Matt wasn\u2019t my first boyfriend.\u00a0 In high school and even early on in college I had other boyfriends.\u00a0 By the time Matt came around I think my parents were pretty broken hearted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Megan is making choices that we are not happy with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Our sweet miracle baby and gift from God although she still claims to love the Lord and claims that Jesus is the Lord of her life there isn\u2019t evidence.\u00a0 She\u2019s palling around with these guys that we\u2019re not in agreement with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing I would want say to parents who are listening in and thinking this is my worst nightmare as they picture this thing unfolding.\u00a0 Use the Weekend to Remember as a pre requisite before you bless the relationship.\u00a0 In other words, when our kids decided to get married we\u2019d say we\u2019ll give you permission to begin the process but before you get married you must go to the engaged sessions at the Weekend to Remember.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we have two special sessions that are a part of the Weekend to Remember.\u00a0 Actually the conference began as a conference for engaged couples, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So the material we\u2019re presenting to married couples we also have some break-out sessions that we also do for engaged couples and it really gives these folks who are looking at marriage an opportunity to understand what marriage is all about from the beginning.\u00a0 And then secondly to evaluate their current relationship and say is this a relationship we should continue to pursue?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it introduces them to Jesus Christ.\u00a0 I\u2019m just wondering what would have happened to Matt if he had had the whole weekend to sit and soak and heard a blueprint for a marriage relationship.\u00a0 It\u2019s not weird.\u00a0 It\u2019s very logical and out of the scripture and it also talks about how you can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Ultimately that\u2019s what you needed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we got married and moved to New York 10 days before September 11<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 We were there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 We moved into our apartment on September 1<sup>st<\/sup>.\u00a0 We had loaded up the U Haul and driven across country.\u00a0 We took out a loan to move to New York City.\u00a0 We had no jobs and no prospects of jobs.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know a soul but were that confident that we would\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You are going to conquer Broadway.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 You got it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019m going to get into a rock-n-roll band.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 They are going to say Matt and Megan, finally, you have arrived!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s Matt.\u00a0 A big fish in a small pond in Weatherford, Oklahoma.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even in Oklahoma City he was pretty well known there.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you are a small fry in the ocean of New York City.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Without a job or prospects of one.\u00a0 There were no jobs in a rock band to speak of and a drug addiction.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you took that with you, the drug addiction?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes because I was so good at hiding.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 At this point it wasn\u2019t so out in the open.\u00a0 It was kind of like yes, I\u2019ve cleaned up my act.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 But you knew he was still smoking\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did and I would make threats to no avail.\u00a0 There were lots of broken bongs that got thrown up against the wall.\u00a0 For listeners who don\u2019t know what that is it\u2019s drug paraphernalia.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I have to go back here Megan.\u00a0 You were marrying a guy who was smoking dope all the time, right?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was.\u00a0 Thank you for pointing that out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, somewhere in the back of your mind there had to be a little thought, this could be a mistake.\u00a0 He is a sweet guy and he\u2019s very respectful to my parents but he\u2019s smoking dope all the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did think that this could be a mistake and I\u2019m embarrassed to even admit this but I\u2019m just going to go ahead and tell you.\u00a0 I really did think that after we were married things would change.\u00a0 He would realize the responsibility and the weight of being a husband and the party days would take a back seat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m glad you admitted it because of the number of folks who right now are thinking when I marry her she\u2019ll change.\u00a0 When I marry him he\u2019ll change.\u00a0 Your first year of marriage was pretty rough wasn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, let\u2019s just say this.\u00a0 Two months after living in New York Megan got a phone call at around 8:00 at night and it was me and it was my one phone call.\u00a0 I said, \u201cHoney, they picked me up.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I\u2019m in a holding cell down in lower Manhattan.\u00a0 I was trying to buy drugs on the street and out of nowhere this cop car pulls up and I\u2019ve got my hands behind my back.\u00a0 Now I\u2019m spending the night in New York City after two months this western Oklahoma boy is in a holding cell in downtown Manhattan looking around at the company that I\u2019m with and I\u2019m thinking who am I?\u00a0 What have I done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost crushing was thinking of my beautiful talented lovely bride who\u2019s prayed for me now for years.\u00a0 She\u2019s sitting at home having to answer phone calls from her parents when they ask where I am. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think he went to the grocery store.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long were you in jail?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just overnight but it was a new low.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you broken?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was this the turning point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 You would think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you would think.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the deal.\u00a0\u00a0 This was the point where I started to realize I have a problem but my answer was self reliance.\u00a0 I can change this.\u00a0 Honey, I\u2019m not going to do this anymore.\u00a0 Honey, I\u2019ll only get high on the weekends.\u00a0 Honey, I\u2019ll be much safer.\u00a0 I\u2019ll only have the dealers come over to the house.\u00a0 I won\u2019t go outside.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t really know anybody at that time so I had to go out and get it.\u00a0 Remember I have to keep the party going.\u00a0 My theology is the theology of happy and celebration constantly because God loves me.\u00a0 I deserve to be happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would go away for extended periods of time doing musicals bringing Broadway to Arkansas.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So your career was happening?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\u00a0 I was working.\u00a0 My name wasn\u2019t necessarily in lights but I was a working actress.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0Were you floating the boat financially for his drug habit?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I started to work a lot in New York City as a cater waiter.\u00a0 There is a whole sub culture of cater waiters so I was working for like $12 an hour for 70 hours a week.\u00a0 You can get high and do these kinds of jobs.\u00a0 You can do these kinds of jobs with your eyes shut.\u00a0 She was also working as well.\u00a0 While she was away in Kansas City or wherever you would travel around to I would be alone, friendless, drug addicted, porn addicted in New York City just totally defeated.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you know that your husband was back home alone, drug addicted, porn addicted, defeated in New York City?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did or at least I had a feeling.\u00a0 I wore out my copy of <em>The Power of a Praying Wife<\/em>, Bible studies, and praying for him.\u00a0 While I was away it wasn\u2019t so bad because I wasn\u2019t having to face it every day.\u00a0 That was just the nature of my job that kept me away.\u00a0 But then I would come back to New York City and be reminded of just where he was at.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To that point comment on how his pornography addiction impacted you as his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Were you aware that he was looking at porn?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, anytime we had a conversation about that he would tell me that it was so common place that every man did it that I must expect him to be like Superman or something.\u00a0 The truth was I knew he wouldn\u2019t be able to fight that demon without the Holy Spirit and without knowing Christ as his personal Savior.\u00a0 It was almost an unfair request to ask him to act in a way that he didn\u2019t know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was contrary to who he was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 It broke my heart but it just kind of went along with the whole allusion of our life at that time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So your life is on track spiritually at this point, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 It\u2019s on track spiritually but I\u2019m alone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 And your career is on track?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your husband is lonely and depressed and drug addicted but hacking it out in New York.\u00a0 You\u2019re still trying to be a rock star.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Still looking for rock and roll.\u00a0 Recording little things here and there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Doing some crazy projects with some very eccentric characters in New York.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there ever a time you looked at a guy in the chorus line on the shows that you were in and thought I wish I\u2019d waited for him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, not necessarily the chorus line but I certainly was starting the think why did I get so invested?\u00a0 Why did I let that summer fling turn into a marriage?\u00a0 At what point did I just surrender the rest of my life to being unequally yoked?\u00a0 I really did think that I was going to be that woman who goes to church alone, that takes her kids to church, and the whole church is praying for her husband who is at home on the couch.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here I am and I\u2019m starting to see that these things that I\u2019m dealing with I\u2019m compensating.\u00a0 I\u2019m starting to experience the fact that I\u2019m no longer on top.\u00a0 This is no longer a celebration this is medicine for a failed life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a wife but I had hit bottom in a way.\u00a0 I\u2019m doing a job that doesn\u2019t make sense why am I doing this?\u00a0 I\u2019ve got all this talent in my mind but it\u2019s not being used.\u00a0 I can\u2019t stop getting high.\u00a0 When she\u2019s away I\u2019m looking at porn.\u00a0 I\u2019m just starting to understand that this is no longer me celebrating life on top but it\u2019s me medicating my ego for what has become a failed life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is interesting because when we started this story you walked in off the street to be the lead in <em>Tommy<\/em>.\u00a0 You had the world by the tail.\u00a0 Flash forward ahead five years and you\u2019re a cater waiter getting high and you can\u2019t get your music thing going and your wife\u2019s career is doing okay.\u00a0 If I\u2019m a guy sitting in your shoes I\u2019d start to get a little depressed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking what am I doing?\u00a0 I\u2019m getting phone calls from my parents saying are you happy?\u00a0 That question is playing like mad with my brain.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, am I happy?\u00a0 What a divisive question to ask a married man.\u00a0 Are you happy?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know now on the other side that marriage is as Gary Thomas puts it not created by God to make us happy though it certainly is a byproduct of joy.\u00a0 Marriage is created to make us holy.\u00a0 I was resisting holiness.\u00a0 I was resisting the teaching and education that Christ was giving me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tC.S. Lewis says if you\u2019re not a Christian you shouldn\u2019t even get married because marriage is a covenant that is based on the love of God for us.\u00a0 So, me entering into a covenant with Megan was like I was getting the reverse.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou said first they should go to the Weekend to Remember what I was getting was a slow painful death of my old life.\u00a0 To the extent that I would surrender to that death and allow that death to happen the second birth to happen.\u00a0 I was already in the sacrament of marriage and it was the sacrament of marriage that was teaching me who God wanted me to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wonder how many folks hear what Matt and Megan are describing and think either that is our situation.\u00a0 I\u2019m married to somebody who doesn\u2019t know Christ or they are looking at a son or daughter heading in this direction and they feel hopeless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well the rest of the story hasn\u2019t been told obviously or they wouldn\u2019t be on our broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The reality is God\u2019s power always works best in a grave yard.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s a song there, Dennis.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are on your way toward dying to self so that you might finally place your faith in Christ.\u00a0 He might create a new person.\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear more about that but to that listener who is in the marriage that\u2019s identifying with what is taking place here no matter how bad it is he really does work in hopeless situations.\u00a0 Frankly if I were you right now as a listener and I was in a situation like you were talking about I\u2019d call friend and ask them to pray for me.\u00a0 That I would not lose hope in doing good to my spouse.\u00a0 You may be like Megan.\u00a0 You may be the only light in that person\u2019s life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Then if there Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear today that Matt Magill\u2019s party days didn\u2019t slow down after he got married.\u00a0 In fact, they got him arrested. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>!\u00a0 Thanks for joining us!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you had to give counsel to parents\u2014let\u2019s say a mom and a dad came to you and they said our daughter has started dating this guy and we\u2019re a little worried about what we are seeing.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know whether we should step in.\u00a0 We don\u2019t want to damage the relationship with our daughter but we are really concerned.\u00a0 She seems head over heels.\u00a0 In fact, we are concerned that they may be physically involved with one another.\u00a0 What kind of counsel would you give them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Before the handoff at the altar in my opinion a mom and a dad have not only the right to speak into their son or daughter\u2019s life but they have the responsibility.\u00a0 For us on more than one occasion Barbara and I had to call some time outs for our adult children as they were seriously dating someone and about to make what we would consider a mistake.\u00a0 Either marrying someone who was not strong enough and that may have been spiritually or in leadership to love and honor and protect and care for.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you some of the most frightening moments as a parent occurred when we felt like we put the relationship on the line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember with our daughter Ashley driving back from Mississippi one time having had a conversation with her and I felt like this could cost us our relationship.\u00a0 We may sever our ties because Bob, to the point of your question, we basically told our daughter this young man is not right for you.\u00a0 We want you to know we\u2019ve prayed about it and talked about it.\u00a0 Having said that, I have this warning for parents--you better be careful about firing that bullet very often.\u00a0 That is a heavy thing to say to an adult child who may be involved sexually.\u00a0 You may not be able to turn their hearts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFortunately for our daughter that was not the case and she turned away from the relationship and ultimately married a fine man who we did bless in that relationship.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking about the responsibility of parents to look into the lives of their children and I can\u2019t help but wonder if the couple that we have with us today couldn\u2019t have used a mom or a dad stepping into the relationship perhaps with some pretty potent words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the reason I brought it up because the story we\u2019ve been hearing this week from our guests is that kind of a their story for our listeners.\u00a0\u00a0 Matt and Megan welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your story was that the two of you met while you were doing theatre in college.\u00a0 Megan you grew up in a Christian home.\u00a0 Matt you grew up in kind of a nominal church going home right?\u00a0 By the time you were in college Megan, you\u2019d backslidden from your faith.\u00a0 Along comes the cute new lead boy in the musical and you guys fell right into a relationship with one another and you fell right into one another\u2019s arms literally.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Summer loving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 At the point two and a half years later where Matt proposes and you say yes the question that was on my mind was I wonder what Megan\u2019s parents think about Matt.\u00a0 I wonder if they have said anything to Megan and raised any concerns.\u00a0 Had that been any part of the conversation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely, on several occasions.\u00a0 They loved Matt.\u00a0 He was\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Eddie Haskell\u2026I was a charmer with a hidden agenda but not in a deceptive way.\u00a0 I knew what I wanted but I also knew that I was in a culture of Christianity and I needed to say the right things to get a ring of Megan\u2019s finger and get her out of Texas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Did your parents see through all of that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 They did.\u00a0 In fact you guys had some pretty intense conversations where there were lots of tears and some raised voices.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, especially with your mom.\u00a0 She would say you\u2019ve got to believe that Christ is the son of God and I would say but how can he be the son of God and man both?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 He and Mom would get in to these kind of theological debates where she was just broken hearted that he didn\u2019t believe.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did she have any idea that he smoked dope?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So no idea that he\u2019d done any crystal meth?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, goodness, no.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Any idea that her sweet little daughter was doing any of this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, goodness, no. No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What about sleeping together?\u00a0 Did they have any idea about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would like to think that they were probably not as na\u00efve as I thought they were at the time.\u00a0 We certainly didn\u2019t talk about it.\u00a0 I will say Matt wasn\u2019t my first boyfriend.\u00a0 In high school and even early on in college I had other boyfriends.\u00a0 By the time Matt came around I think my parents were pretty broken hearted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Megan is making choices that we are not happy with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Our sweet miracle baby and gift from God although she still claims to love the Lord and claims that Jesus is the Lord of her life there isn\u2019t evidence.\u00a0 She\u2019s palling around with these guys that we\u2019re not in agreement with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing I would want say to parents who are listening in and thinking this is my worst nightmare as they picture this thing unfolding.\u00a0 Use the Weekend to Remember as a pre requisite before you bless the relationship.\u00a0 In other words, when our kids decided to get married we\u2019d say we\u2019ll give you permission to begin the process but before you get married you must go to the engaged sessions at the Weekend to Remember.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we have two special sessions that are a part of the Weekend to Remember.\u00a0 Actually the conference began as a conference for engaged couples, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So the material we\u2019re presenting to married couples we also have some break-out sessions that we also do for engaged couples and it really gives these folks who are looking at marriage an opportunity to understand what marriage is all about from the beginning.\u00a0 And then secondly to evaluate their current relationship and say is this a relationship we should continue to pursue?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it introduces them to Jesus Christ.\u00a0 I\u2019m just wondering what would have happened to Matt if he had had the whole weekend to sit and soak and heard a blueprint for a marriage relationship.\u00a0 It\u2019s not weird.\u00a0 It\u2019s very logical and out of the scripture and it also talks about how you can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Ultimately that\u2019s what you needed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we got married and moved to New York 10 days before September 11<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 We were there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 We moved into our apartment on September 1<sup>st<\/sup>.\u00a0 We had loaded up the U Haul and driven across country.\u00a0 We took out a loan to move to New York City.\u00a0 We had no jobs and no prospects of jobs.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know a soul but were that confident that we would\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You are going to conquer Broadway.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 You got it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019m going to get into a rock-n-roll band.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 They are going to say Matt and Megan, finally, you have arrived!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s Matt.\u00a0 A big fish in a small pond in Weatherford, Oklahoma.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even in Oklahoma City he was pretty well known there.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you are a small fry in the ocean of New York City.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Without a job or prospects of one.\u00a0 There were no jobs in a rock band to speak of and a drug addiction.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you took that with you, the drug addiction?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes because I was so good at hiding.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 At this point it wasn\u2019t so out in the open.\u00a0 It was kind of like yes, I\u2019ve cleaned up my act.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 But you knew he was still smoking\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did and I would make threats to no avail.\u00a0 There were lots of broken bongs that got thrown up against the wall.\u00a0 For listeners who don\u2019t know what that is it\u2019s drug paraphernalia.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I have to go back here Megan.\u00a0 You were marrying a guy who was smoking dope all the time, right?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was.\u00a0 Thank you for pointing that out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, somewhere in the back of your mind there had to be a little thought, this could be a mistake.\u00a0 He is a sweet guy and he\u2019s very respectful to my parents but he\u2019s smoking dope all the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did think that this could be a mistake and I\u2019m embarrassed to even admit this but I\u2019m just going to go ahead and tell you.\u00a0 I really did think that after we were married things would change.\u00a0 He would realize the responsibility and the weight of being a husband and the party days would take a back seat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m glad you admitted it because of the number of folks who right now are thinking when I marry her she\u2019ll change.\u00a0 When I marry him he\u2019ll change.\u00a0 Your first year of marriage was pretty rough wasn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, let\u2019s just say this.\u00a0 Two months after living in New York Megan got a phone call at around 8:00 at night and it was me and it was my one phone call.\u00a0 I said, \u201cHoney, they picked me up.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I\u2019m in a holding cell down in lower Manhattan.\u00a0 I was trying to buy drugs on the street and out of nowhere this cop car pulls up and I\u2019ve got my hands behind my back.\u00a0 Now I\u2019m spending the night in New York City after two months this western Oklahoma boy is in a holding cell in downtown Manhattan looking around at the company that I\u2019m with and I\u2019m thinking who am I?\u00a0 What have I done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost crushing was thinking of my beautiful talented lovely bride who\u2019s prayed for me now for years.\u00a0 She\u2019s sitting at home having to answer phone calls from her parents when they ask where I am. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think he went to the grocery store.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long were you in jail?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just overnight but it was a new low.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you broken?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was this the turning point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 You would think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you would think.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the deal.\u00a0\u00a0 This was the point where I started to realize I have a problem but my answer was self reliance.\u00a0 I can change this.\u00a0 Honey, I\u2019m not going to do this anymore.\u00a0 Honey, I\u2019ll only get high on the weekends.\u00a0 Honey, I\u2019ll be much safer.\u00a0 I\u2019ll only have the dealers come over to the house.\u00a0 I won\u2019t go outside.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t really know anybody at that time so I had to go out and get it.\u00a0 Remember I have to keep the party going.\u00a0 My theology is the theology of happy and celebration constantly because God loves me.\u00a0 I deserve to be happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would go away for extended periods of time doing musicals bringing Broadway to Arkansas.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So your career was happening?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\u00a0 I was working.\u00a0 My name wasn\u2019t necessarily in lights but I was a working actress.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0Were you floating the boat financially for his drug habit?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I started to work a lot in New York City as a cater waiter.\u00a0 There is a whole sub culture of cater waiters so I was working for like $12 an hour for 70 hours a week.\u00a0 You can get high and do these kinds of jobs.\u00a0 You can do these kinds of jobs with your eyes shut.\u00a0 She was also working as well.\u00a0 While she was away in Kansas City or wherever you would travel around to I would be alone, friendless, drug addicted, porn addicted in New York City just totally defeated.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you know that your husband was back home alone, drug addicted, porn addicted, defeated in New York City?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did or at least I had a feeling.\u00a0 I wore out my copy of <em>The Power of a Praying Wife<\/em>, Bible studies, and praying for him.\u00a0 While I was away it wasn\u2019t so bad because I wasn\u2019t having to face it every day.\u00a0 That was just the nature of my job that kept me away.\u00a0 But then I would come back to New York City and be reminded of just where he was at.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To that point comment on how his pornography addiction impacted you as his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Were you aware that he was looking at porn?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, anytime we had a conversation about that he would tell me that it was so common place that every man did it that I must expect him to be like Superman or something.\u00a0 The truth was I knew he wouldn\u2019t be able to fight that demon without the Holy Spirit and without knowing Christ as his personal Savior.\u00a0 It was almost an unfair request to ask him to act in a way that he didn\u2019t know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was contrary to who he was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 It broke my heart but it just kind of went along with the whole allusion of our life at that time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So your life is on track spiritually at this point, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 It\u2019s on track spiritually but I\u2019m alone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 And your career is on track?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your husband is lonely and depressed and drug addicted but hacking it out in New York.\u00a0 You\u2019re still trying to be a rock star.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Still looking for rock and roll.\u00a0 Recording little things here and there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Doing some crazy projects with some very eccentric characters in New York.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there ever a time you looked at a guy in the chorus line on the shows that you were in and thought I wish I\u2019d waited for him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Megan:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, not necessarily the chorus line but I certainly was starting the think why did I get so invested?\u00a0 Why did I let that summer fling turn into a marriage?\u00a0 At what point did I just surrender the rest of my life to being unequally yoked?\u00a0 I really did think that I was going to be that woman who goes to church alone, that takes her kids to church, and the whole church is praying for her husband who is at home on the couch.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here I am and I\u2019m starting to see that these things that I\u2019m dealing with I\u2019m compensating.\u00a0 I\u2019m starting to experience the fact that I\u2019m no longer on top.\u00a0 This is no longer a celebration this is medicine for a failed life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a wife but I had hit bottom in a way.\u00a0 I\u2019m doing a job that doesn\u2019t make sense why am I doing this?\u00a0 I\u2019ve got all this talent in my mind but it\u2019s not being used.\u00a0 I can\u2019t stop getting high.\u00a0 When she\u2019s away I\u2019m looking at porn.\u00a0 I\u2019m just starting to understand that this is no longer me celebrating life on top but it\u2019s me medicating my ego for what has become a failed life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is interesting because when we started this story you walked in off the street to be the lead in <em>Tommy<\/em>.\u00a0 You had the world by the tail.\u00a0 Flash forward ahead five years and you\u2019re a cater waiter getting high and you can\u2019t get your music thing going and your wife\u2019s career is doing okay.\u00a0 If I\u2019m a guy sitting in your shoes I\u2019d start to get a little depressed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking what am I doing?\u00a0 I\u2019m getting phone calls from my parents saying are you happy?\u00a0 That question is playing like mad with my brain.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, am I happy?\u00a0 What a divisive question to ask a married man.\u00a0 Are you happy?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know now on the other side that marriage is as Gary Thomas puts it not created by God to make us happy though it certainly is a byproduct of joy.\u00a0 Marriage is created to make us holy.\u00a0 I was resisting holiness.\u00a0 I was resisting the teaching and education that Christ was giving me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tC.S. Lewis says if you\u2019re not a Christian you shouldn\u2019t even get married because marriage is a covenant that is based on the love of God for us.\u00a0 So, me entering into a covenant with Megan was like I was getting the reverse.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou said first they should go to the Weekend to Remember what I was getting was a slow painful death of my old life.\u00a0 To the extent that I would surrender to that death and allow that death to happen the second birth to happen.\u00a0 I was already in the sacrament of marriage and it was the sacrament of marriage that situation.\u00a0 I\u2019m married to somebody who doesn\u2019t know Christ or they are looking at a son or daughter heading in this direction and they feel hopeless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well the rest of the story hasn\u2019t been told obviously or they wouldn\u2019t be on our
