Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Greatest man moment? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You and Barbara do okay on car trips together? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, we\u2019ve done okay on car trips.\u00a0 It\u2019s some of our plane trips that have been\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Been a little tense?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes!\u00a0 Except you can\u2019t do it the reverse way.\u00a0 You can\u2019t drop her off at home and say, \u201cYou take the car\u201d!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll meet you out there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll meet you in Denver.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What is it about plane travel that causes anxiety?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s not anxiety - it\u2019s just only so much travel that a busy Mom can do!\u00a0\u00a0 When you are getting six kids ready to go speeding \u2013 go do again after a busy week and everything in the world is coming unglued, and things are coming un-nailed it\u2019s just life Bob.\u00a0 So there are those moments that we all experience! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Mary Ann is the same way.\u00a0 She is always wishing she wasn\u2019t going on whatever trip it is. Will, Susie welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you very much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Susie, you mentioned in your book something that I think is really a great point.\u00a0 You say, \u201cThat there are vast differences between what women may think their husbands are like, and what they are really like\u201d! What do you mean by that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think that sometimes as women we expect our husbands to be like women instead of like men.\u00a0 Many times in marriage we want the kind of qualities that we have in our girlfriends in our husbands.\u00a0 The truth is that men are just different than women. It\u2019s funny \u2013 this is born out of a story: I was having a really serious problem and I wanted to talk to Will.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cYou know of all people in my whole life my husband \u2013 my pastor husband.\u00a0 He\u2019s so spiritual and sensitive he\u2019s going to know just the right thing to say.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0So, I walked into the study, and I kind of slumped against the wall \u2013 you know my body language said it all, but just in case I thought I\u2019d give him some words too, and I said, \u201cWill, and I explained the whole problem,\u201d and he looked up at me over his little half glasses.\u00a0 He looked so thoughtful and so intelligent, and so spiritual and I just knew he was going to say something really amazing.\u00a0 He looked up at me after I\u2019d given him my whole life, I\u2019d put my heart out there and he said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you go to the store and buy some bread?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Bread?\u00a0 Do you remember this story?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I totally said, \u201cShe needed to go shop \u2013 she needed some shopping therapy!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, that\u2019s not why you said that: You were hungry and you wanted a sandwich.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You hadn\u2019t heard a word she said!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No! He didn\u2019t hear a word I said!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She walked into the study \u2013 need we say more?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was in the study; I was doing God\u2019s word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You were in the study \u2013 you were on task.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly, and she wanted to talk. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh my gosh!\u00a0 He was pretending like he was there, but he wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 I think men master that look.\u00a0 You know, and then they say something and they blow it. It was just one of those moments where it made me laugh, so that was good, because I could\u2019ve gotten really mad.\u00a0 It was so absurd that it made me die laughing, and I walked away, and I did not go to the store.\u00a0 I just thought, you know what \u2013 I just need to go have lunch with a girlfriend.\u00a0 You know, and let her help me sort out my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, I\u2019m thinking of some women who would say, \u201cIf my husband said that to me, I would not die laughing.\u201d\u00a0 I would think there would be women who would say, \u201cSusie he should have cared enough to put his books away, to lock in and to try to help you. He was just insensitive.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was insensitive: there\u2019s no doubt about it!\u00a0 There are times I\u2019m very tuned in, and we listen, but at that moment I didn\u2019t handle that particularly well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Is that okay for you to be insensitive?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, it\u2019s not! She could have gotten very mad and been justified. I handled it like a jerk, and she rolled with it. Thank God!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Is that what you are saying a wife ought to do? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m saying basically, \u201cI think there are times you have to roll with it.\u201d\u00a0 Sure, but I also think that we expect men to be super sensitive and to cuddle infants, and we forget that men need to be men.\u00a0 That\u2019s actually the reason why we are attracted to them in the first place.\u00a0 So, for me it\u2019s really about keeping a balanced life and not leaning into Will for every single communication need I have.\u00a0 Yes, the big stuff, yes should my husband listen to me \u2013 yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, when he does say something insensitive it shouldn\u2019t cause my world to cave in, because I did after all marry a man \u2013 you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think that\u2019s a compliment?!\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure? I did after all marry a man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s an absolute compliment.\u00a0 I mean I married a man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The point of your book is: \u201cAt the point we are different \u2013 male and female we can begin to think I simply do not understand him or her. At that point you can feel like you are losing your mind because\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie: <\/strong>You can!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You really can, and you know what else? I think that both men and women do this: they get married, and it\u2019s all fabulous and romantic you know.\u00a0 They do the wedding, and at some point they wake up and think:\u00a0 You know you are really frustrating me, you should be a lot more like me, and we\u2019d get along with each other better.\u00a0 If you would just be more like me, if you would think more like me, if you\u2019d pick up more like me, if you\u2019d talk to the children more like me than we\u2019d get along.\u00a0 Really, that\u2019s a lie. It\u2019s a lie, and embracing it wrecks a marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Explain to our listeners what you mean by the love most \u2013 act worst principle?\u00a0 What is that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That principle really is about the people that you love the most you treat the worst.\u00a0 It\u2019s not what you intend to do, but for example: Will is my number one priority; he\u2019s the person that I\u2019ve pledged my life to even more than my children. I said, \u201cI would be with this man and love him until death do us part, and I do love him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, I think many times, and I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s just a woman thing or a man thing, you guys can tell me.\u00a0 Many times I don\u2019t reflect that in my everyday living.\u00a0 I don\u2019t reflect that in the way I treat Will, I go out and I\u2019m busy all day, and I give everybody else the best of me.\u00a0 Whether it\u2019s the person at Starbucks, or where I work the radio station.\u00a0 Then, I come home and I\u2019m a not so nice wife to Will.\u00a0 That\u2019s very upside down; it\u2019s a very upside down thing to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>To give you an illustration of that, we were talking to a pastor on <em>FamilyLife Today,<\/em> he and his wife had lost their son, and it was a season of depression, a season of grief, and she was despondent.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI remember one day when somebody came to the door, and she opened the door, and she engaged with this person and was bright and alive, and then shut the door and went right back into it\u201d: He said, \u201cWhy is it with a stranger you rally, and with me you don\u2019t?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of it you could say, is we should be free to be as honest and transparent.\u00a0 If I\u2019m really depressed I shouldn\u2019t have to put on a front for you, but I think your point is right, that we often take for granted, and take advantage of our relationship with one another, and we\u2019re not kind. We\u2019re not considerate.\u00a0 We\u2019re not generous.\u00a0 We\u2019re not loving.\u00a0 We\u2019re not all of the things that ought to be characteristic of a follower of Christ in our marriage relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right \u2013 and for me, I think that a lot of it has to do with time and energy.\u00a0 You know, I\u2019ll make the time to be a good neighbor, or be a good daughter, or be a good mother, over and over I\u2019ll make time to be a good mother, but I don\u2019t take the time to be kind to Will, and to love him in an everyday way, and to speak kindly to him, and to give him a break when he says, \u201cGo get the bread.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You did that when you were dating him!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely \u2013 I was a great girlfriend \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But once you hooked him\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re still a great girlfriend \u2013 babe!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You have learned a lot of things.\u00a0 You haven\u2019t totally lost your mind.\u00a0 You have learned a lot of things about your man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I have!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You speak of a magic ingredient that every man needs?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Respect!\u00a0 We say we love them, and I think they get that.\u00a0 You can all give me feedback on this:\u00a0 I really think that men need to feel respected by the woman that they love most. In the past three or four years, I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ve become a worst driver or if Barbara\u2019s become a big screamer? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s a new level of intimacy you are experiencing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There you go!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I mean the point you are making is a woman needs to communicate that she trusts and respects her husband. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right \u2013 and that he is doing a good job. I think that when we are especially gripey, that it basically says, \u201cYou are not being a man.\u201d\u00a0 I think that when I fuss at Will in the car, he usually says, \u201cI\u2019ve been driving a really long time, I can handle this.\u201d\u00a0 So, I don\u2019t mean to be telling him he can\u2019t drive well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I say that very politely though, I might add!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think we do that, and I think that sometimes we\u2019re not as careful in public as we should be and maybe we say something that we think is funny in front of our husbands about our husbands that\u2019s not funny at all.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that grown men are little boys on the inside, and I think that sometimes as wives we fail to remember that, and I think that we have to be careful.\u00a0 Not that they\u2019re fragile, but they are more sensitive than they let on.\u00a0 I think that wives have the most power to lift them up, and not degrade them.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s the magic ingredient! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When have you felt most respected by Susie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will: <\/strong>\u00a0Words - words \u2013 affirmation!\u00a0 I thrive on her affirmation.\u00a0 I don\u2019t need it more than I need God\u2019s, but when Susie is complimentary of me, or something I\u2019ve done it adds life, it adds fuel to my fire. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When you get done preaching on Sunday?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s more the opposite. If I come in from church, and she\u2019ll say, \u201cBoy, the music was too loud today,\u201d which I had no control over, I\u2019ll just crash.\u00a0 I\u2019ll say, \u201cI need you so much to be an advocate, and not an adversary in these things.\u201d\u00a0 She\u2019s really good at saying, \u201cGreat message, you were on, or whatever.\u201d\u00a0 For me, it\u2019s her words!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s not that she can\u2019t be honest and speak the truth.\u00a0 I mean, when the music is too loud?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t want her to do it right after church though \u2013 I\u2019m exhausted!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Or when you weren\u2019t on, you want her to tell you you weren\u2019t on \u2013 right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If she can approach it like permission to talk about church today \u2013 absolutely! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think also what happens is: I need to realize that my biggest job is not critiquing the service on Sunday.\u00a0 My biggest job is encouraging the man - my man \u2013 the man who happens to be standing up there and teaching in front of a crowd.\u00a0 So, is it really that big of a deal if the music was loud?\u00a0 Surely someone noticed \u2013 someone is there to take care of it.\u00a0 If that\u2019s going to really beat Will down, then that\u2019s just not something I need to discuss. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, from a practical standpoint, the woman who is not married to a preacher?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right \u2013 the driving thing is a huge thing \u2013 don\u2019t you think? I think it\u2019s huge!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You can tell by the look on his face he thinks it\u2019s huge!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Listen, honest confessions Dennis.\u00a0 I was in a really horrible head on wreck, a couple of years ago, and I made it \u2013 I was fine \u2013 God took care of me.\u00a0 But, I do have some driving baggage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Car baggage \u2013 big time!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I do, and for some reason, I have trouble doing long car trips with Will. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Like long?\u00a0 How long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Colorado \u2013 16 hours long, or anything over 20 minutes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Anything over 20 minutes can get to be a problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Seriously!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie: <\/strong>It\u2019s something about in turning up the Doobie Brothers, enjoying the drive, and start dancing.\u00a0 I\u2019m like Ooh!\u00a0 Honestly, one of the things we\u2019ve done, is we\u2019ve struck an arrangement until I can get where I\u2019m not a freak in the car!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, we loaded up the car to go to Colorado, 4 a.m. going to drive 16 hours to Colorado, put the kids in, drove 25 miles, and Susie was in the front seat, in body language and huffing and puffing said everything I need to know.\u00a0 In my greatest man moment of all time, I turned the car around, and took her home, and dropped her off on the doorstep with the kids, and said, \u201cI\u2019ll pick you up in Denver, catch a plane,\u201d and I drove back to Colorado. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, it sounds insensitive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It saved our marriage!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It did!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We promised the kids we\u2019re not going to divorce.\u00a0 Mommy\u2019s just a freak.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I just turned the car around and said, \u201cWe\u2019re not doing this for 16 hours, no way \u2013 I\u2019d rather you fly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Honestly, I respect that he did that.\u00a0 I respect that he recognized that for whatever reason, I\u2019m a freak in the car and he was able to turn around.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t say it like that \u2013 like we\u2019re dropping you off at the doorstep \u2013 he realized it, and he handled it in a way, and it was actually exactly what I needed, and wanted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It wasn\u2019t worth it though!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0I want you to quickly describe each one of these: what you mean by them in terms of how you can better understand your husband.\u00a0 I think this is pretty clear, but unpack it a little bit. A sex drought can cause a relational disaster?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It can.\u00a0 This is the deal \u2013 let me just be plain and simple. God made sex, he made it for a reason, it\u2019s a big deal in your marriage, typically guys enjoy and want sex more than women. That is not only something that we need as women to think of \u2013 being able to give your marriage that\u2019s pleasurable and fabulous, but it\u2019s also a need in your marriage.\u00a0 To the extent that you refrain, or you\u2019re too tired, or you have a headache tonight, that is going to impact your marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I urge women \u2013 floor it with your husband.\u00a0 Remember way back when you left him at sometime \u2013 he\u2019s a man you\u2019re a woman.\u00a0 Figure it out, go to counseling, do whatever you need to do.\u00a0 It\u2019s a huge integral part of a healthy marriage, and if it\u2019s not happening, and you might think it is fine, I bet if you asked your husband, it\u2019s not okay.\u00a0 It\u2019s something I think we need to rethink as Christian women.\u00a0 It\u2019s not bad it\u2019s good. It\u2019s not something to be pushed to the side or think of it like a to do list.\u00a0 It\u2019s something we need to really rethink and get on the same page with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay, one more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Remember your husband is hot to someone \u2013 remind him that he is to you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\u00a0 Look, I married this cute man, and you know what, when you live with a guy everyday and they go out the door \u2013 you see them at their worst, they didn\u2019t take the trash out, and they are bothering you.\u00a0 You don\u2019t think about the fact that they are going out there looking all cute and smelly and they are in a big world where there are a lot of people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You mean smelly good?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Smelly good! I did mean smelly good! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Marlboro man smelly good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There you go!\u00a0 They\u2019re going out there, and it might be shocking for you to think of now, if you\u2019ve been married 20, 30, years or even 10. T hey are hot to somebody, and it would be a lot better if they were hot to you. I think we need to just reignite our marriages, and remember.\u00a0 Do what you have to do \u2013 go on date nights, and tell them they\u2019re cute and hot.\u00a0 Be that woman that you probably were when you met him and saw him for the first time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re a good sport.\u00a0 You know that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Every man in America is weeping right now listening to this.\u00a0 Thank you God!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>To sit in a studio with your husband and two other guys and have this \u2013 you\u2019re a pretty good sport!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She\u2019s a man advocate. She advocates for men!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes \u2013 I would imagine it\u2019s a hard thing to be a man today.\u00a0 I think that one of the most lovely things we can do as women, as wives of men is to love them, and tell them we love them with our bodies. I really do!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Preach it girl! Bring it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I just appreciate you being honest about it, because I do think there\u2019s a generation of young ladies who have grown up in this culture where in the process of the culture telling them how they can become powerful they\u2019ve eradicated the differences between men and women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn erasing them they have in my opinion weakened men and the relationship they have with their wives.\u00a0 Most young ladies don\u2019t know how to respect.\u00a0 They don\u2019t know how to build him up, encourage him, and they don\u2019t think of that being one of their primary responsibilities, and assignments in marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and they think to themselves, I\u2019ll respect him when he starts deserving it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s conditional!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, it\u2019s going to be a while before he starts deserving it.\u00a0 He needs your respect to get there.\u00a0 You know, what I mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s how Paul summarized it at the end of Ephesians 5: Wives respect your husbands!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s not something that we need to feel squished down about.\u00a0 That is a privilege.\u00a0 If I can respect Will, and love him and build him up, and I see what he is able to do, in the impacting lives or just the person that he is, or the Dad that he is, that\u2019s my pleasure and my joy.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 He does the same thing for me!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>You know that\u2019s something we can talk about here on the radio and there are folks who are listening and thinking \u2013 okay that sounds easy, but in my home, in my situation, that is not an easy thing to do.\u00a0 We have to acknowledge that is the case for a lot of couples. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact a lot of the couples who come to our Weekend to Remember Marriage Conferences \u2013 they have lost respect for one another.\u00a0 The love has ebbed in their marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Colorado \u2013 16 hours!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s something about in turning up the Doobie Brothers, enjoying the drive, and start dancing! Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Greatest man moment? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You and Barbara do okay on car trips together? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, we\u2019ve done okay on car trips.\u00a0 It\u2019s some of our plane trips that have been\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Been a little tense?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes!\u00a0 Except you can\u2019t do it the reverse way.\u00a0 You can\u2019t drop her off at home and say, \u201cYou take the car\u201d!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll meet you out there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019ll meet you in Denver.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What is it about plane travel that causes anxiety?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s not anxiety - it\u2019s just only so much travel that a busy Mom can do!\u00a0\u00a0 When you are getting six kids ready to go speeding \u2013 go do again after a busy week and everything in the world is coming unglued, and things are coming un-nailed it\u2019s just life Bob.\u00a0 So there are those moments that we all experience! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Mary Ann is the same way.\u00a0 She is always wishing she wasn\u2019t going on whatever trip it is. What do you mean by that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think that sometimes as women we expect our husbands to be like women instead of like men.\u00a0 Many times in marriage we want the kind of qualities that we have in our girlfriends in our husbands.\u00a0 The truth is that men are just different than women. It\u2019s funny \u2013 this is born out of a story: I was having a really serious problem and I wanted to talk to Will.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cYou know of all people in my whole life my husband \u2013 my pastor husband.\u00a0 He\u2019s so spiritual and sensitive he\u2019s going to know just the right thing to say.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0So, I walked into the study, and I kind of slumped against the wall \u2013 you know my body language said it all, but just in case I thought I\u2019d give him some words too, and I said, \u201cWill, and I explained the whole problem,\u201d and he looked up at me over his little half glasses.\u00a0 He looked so thoughtful and so intelligent, and so spiritual and I just knew he was going to say something really amazing.\u00a0 He looked up at me after I\u2019d given him my whole life, I\u2019d put my heart out there and he said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you go to the store and buy some bread?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Bread?\u00a0 Do you remember this story?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I totally said, \u201cShe needed to go shop \u2013 she needed some shopping therapy!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, that\u2019s not why you said that: You were hungry and you wanted a sandwich.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You hadn\u2019t heard a word she said!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No! He didn\u2019t hear a word I said!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She walked into the study \u2013 need we say more?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was in the study; I was doing God\u2019s word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You were in the study \u2013 you were on task.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly, and she wanted to talk. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh my gosh!\u00a0 He was pretending like he was there, but he wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 I think men master that look.\u00a0 You know, and then they say something and they blow it. It was just one of those moments where it made me laugh, so that was good, because I could\u2019ve gotten really mad.\u00a0 It was so absurd that it made me die laughing, and I walked away, and I did not go to the store.\u00a0 I just thought, you know what \u2013 I just need to go have lunch with a girlfriend.\u00a0 You know, and let her help me sort out my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, I\u2019m thinking of some women who would say, \u201cIf my husband said that to me, I would not die laughing.\u201d\u00a0 I would think there would be women who would say, \u201cSusie he should have cared enough to put his books away, to lock in and to try to help you. He was just insensitive.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was insensitive: there\u2019s no doubt about it!\u00a0 There are times I\u2019m very tuned in, and we listen, but at that moment I didn\u2019t handle that particularly well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Is that okay for you to be insensitive?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No, it\u2019s not! She could have gotten very mad and been justified. I handled it like a jerk, and she rolled with it. Thank God!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Is that what you are saying a wife ought to do? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m saying basically, \u201cI think there are times you have to roll with it.\u201d\u00a0 Sure, but I also think that we expect men to be super sensitive and to cuddle infants, and we forget that men need to be men.\u00a0 That\u2019s actually the reason why we are attracted to them in the first place.\u00a0 So, for me it\u2019s really about keeping a balanced life and not leaning into Will for every single communication need I have.\u00a0 Yes, the big stuff, yes should my husband listen to me \u2013 yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, when he does say something insensitive it shouldn\u2019t cause my world to cave in, because I did after all marry a man \u2013 you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think that\u2019s a compliment?!\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure? I did after all marry a man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s an absolute compliment.\u00a0 I mean I married a man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The point of your book is: \u201cAt the point we are different \u2013 male and female we can begin to think I simply do not understand him or her. At that point you can feel like you are losing your mind because\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie: <\/strong>You can!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You really can, and you know what else? I think that both men and women do this: they get married, and it\u2019s all fabulous and romantic you know.\u00a0 They do the wedding, and at some point they wake up and think:\u00a0 You know you are really frustrating me, you should be a lot more like me, and we\u2019d get along with each other better.\u00a0 If you would just be more like me, if you would think more like me, if you\u2019d pick up more like me, if you\u2019d talk to the children more like me than we\u2019d get along.\u00a0 Really, that\u2019s a lie. It\u2019s a lie, and embracing it wrecks a marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Explain to our listeners what you mean by the love most \u2013 act worst principle?\u00a0 What is that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That principle really is about the people that you love the most you treat the worst.\u00a0 It\u2019s not what you intend to do, but for example: Will is my number one priority; he\u2019s the person that I\u2019ve pledged my life to even more than my children. I said, \u201cI would be with this man and love him until death do us part, and I do love him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, I think many times, and I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s just a woman thing or a man thing, you guys can tell me.\u00a0 Many times I don\u2019t reflect that in my everyday living.\u00a0 I don\u2019t reflect that in the way I treat Will, I go out and I\u2019m busy all day, and I give everybody else the best of me.\u00a0 Whether it\u2019s the person at Starbucks, or where I work the radio station.\u00a0 Then, I come home and I\u2019m a not so nice wife to Will.\u00a0 That\u2019s very upside down; it\u2019s a very upside down thing to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>To give you an illustration of that, we were talking to a pastor on <em>FamilyLife Today,<\/em> he and his wife had lost their son, and it was a season of depression, a season of grief, and she was despondent.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI remember one day when somebody came to the door, and she opened the door, and she engaged with this person and was bright and alive, and then shut the door and went right back into it\u201d: He said, \u201cWhy is it with a stranger you rally, and with me you don\u2019t?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of it you could say, is we should be free to be as honest and transparent.\u00a0 If I\u2019m really depressed I shouldn\u2019t have to put on a front for you, but I think your point is right, that we often take for granted, and take advantage of our relationship with one another, and we\u2019re not kind. We\u2019re not considerate.\u00a0 We\u2019re not generous.\u00a0 We\u2019re not loving.\u00a0 We\u2019re not all of the things that ought to be characteristic of a follower of Christ in our marriage relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right \u2013 and for me, I think that a lot of it has to do with time and energy.\u00a0 You know, I\u2019ll make the time to be a good neighbor, or be a good daughter, or be a good mother, over and over I\u2019ll make time to be a good mother, but I don\u2019t take the time to be kind to Will, and to love him in an everyday way, and to speak kindly to him, and to give him a break when he says, \u201cGo get the bread.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You did that when you were dating him!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Absolutely \u2013 I was a great girlfriend \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But once you hooked him\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You\u2019re still a great girlfriend \u2013 babe!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You have learned a lot of things.\u00a0 You haven\u2019t totally lost your mind.\u00a0 You have learned a lot of things about your man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I have!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You speak of a magic ingredient that every man needs?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Respect!\u00a0 We say we love them, and I think they get that.\u00a0 You can all give me feedback on this:\u00a0 I really think that men need to feel respected by the woman that they love most. I think that when we are especially gripey, that it basically says, \u201cYou are not being a man.\u201d\u00a0 I think that when I fuss at Will in the car, he usually says, \u201cI\u2019ve been driving a really long time, I can handle this.\u201d\u00a0 So, I don\u2019t mean to be telling him he can\u2019t drive well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I say that very politely though, I might add!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think we do that, and I think that sometimes we\u2019re not as careful in public as we should be and maybe we say something that we think is funny in front of our husbands about our husbands that\u2019s not funny at all.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that grown men are little boys on the inside, and I think that sometimes as wives we fail to remember that, and I think that we have to be careful.\u00a0 Not that they\u2019re fragile, but they are more sensitive than they let on.\u00a0 I think that wives have the most power to lift them up, and not degrade them.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s the magic ingredient! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When have you felt most respected by Susie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will: <\/strong>\u00a0Words - words \u2013 affirmation!\u00a0 I thrive on her affirmation.\u00a0 I don\u2019t need it more than I need God\u2019s, but when Susie is complimentary of me, or something I\u2019ve done it adds life, it adds fuel to my fire. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When you get done preaching on Sunday?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s more the opposite. If I come in from church, and she\u2019ll say, \u201cBoy, the music was too loud today,\u201d which I had no control over, I\u2019ll just crash.\u00a0 I\u2019ll say, \u201cI need you so much to be an advocate, and not an adversary in these things.\u201d\u00a0 She\u2019s really good at saying, \u201cGreat message, you were on, or whatever.\u201d\u00a0 For me, it\u2019s her words!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s not that she can\u2019t be honest and speak the truth.\u00a0 I mean, when the music is too loud?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t want her to do it right after church though \u2013 I\u2019m exhausted!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Or when you weren\u2019t on, you want her to tell you you weren\u2019t on \u2013 right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If she can approach it like permission to talk about church today \u2013 absolutely! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think also what happens is: I need to realize that my biggest job is not critiquing the service on Sunday.\u00a0 My biggest job is encouraging the man - my man \u2013 the man who happens to be standing up there and teaching in front of a crowd.\u00a0 So, is it really that big of a deal if the music was loud?\u00a0 Surely someone noticed \u2013 someone is there to take care of it.\u00a0 If that\u2019s going to really beat Will down, then that\u2019s just not something I need to discuss. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, from a practical standpoint, the woman who is not married to a preacher?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right \u2013 the driving thing is a huge thing \u2013 don\u2019t you think? I think it\u2019s huge!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You can tell by the look on his face he thinks it\u2019s huge!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Listen, honest confessions Dennis.\u00a0 I was in a really horrible head on wreck, a couple of years ago, and I made it \u2013 I was fine \u2013 God took care of me.\u00a0 But, I do have some driving baggage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Car baggage \u2013 big time!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I do, and for some reason, I have trouble doing long car trips with Will. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Like long?\u00a0 How long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Colorado \u2013 16 hours long, or anything over 20 minutes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Anything over 20 minutes can get to be a problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Seriously!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie: <\/strong>It\u2019s something about in turning up the Doobie Brothers, enjoying the drive, and start dancing.\u00a0 I\u2019m like Ooh!\u00a0 Honestly, one of the things we\u2019ve done, is we\u2019ve struck an arrangement until I can get where I\u2019m not a freak in the car!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, we loaded up the car to go to Colorado, 4 a.m. going to drive 16 hours to Colorado, put the kids in, drove 25 miles, and Susie was in the front seat, in body language and huffing and puffing said everything I need to know.\u00a0 In my greatest man moment of all time, I turned the car around, and took her home, and dropped her off on the doorstep with the kids, and said, \u201cI\u2019ll pick you up in Denver, catch a plane,\u201d and I drove back to Colorado. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, it sounds insensitive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It saved our marriage!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It did!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We promised the kids we\u2019re not going to divorce.\u00a0 Mommy\u2019s just a freak.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I just turned the car around and said, \u201cWe\u2019re not doing this for 16 hours, no way \u2013 I\u2019d rather you fly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Honestly, I respect that he did that.\u00a0 I respect that he recognized that for whatever reason, I\u2019m a freak in the car and he was able to turn around.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t say it like that \u2013 like we\u2019re dropping you off at the doorstep \u2013 he realized it, and he handled it in a way, and it was actually exactly what I needed, and wanted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It wasn\u2019t worth it though!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0I want you to quickly describe each one of these: what you mean by them in terms of how you can better understand your husband.\u00a0 I think this is pretty clear, but unpack it a little bit. A sex drought can cause a relational disaster?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It can.\u00a0 This is the deal \u2013 let me just be plain and simple. God made sex, he made it for a reason, it\u2019s a big deal in your marriage, typically guys enjoy and want sex more than women. That is not only something that we need as women to think of \u2013 being able to give your marriage that\u2019s pleasurable and fabulous, but it\u2019s also a need in your marriage.\u00a0 To the extent that you refrain, or you\u2019re too tired, or you have a headache tonight, that is going to impact your marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I urge women \u2013 floor it with your husband.\u00a0 Remember way back when you left him at sometime \u2013 he\u2019s a man you\u2019re a woman.\u00a0 Figure it out, go to counseling, do whatever you need to do.\u00a0 It\u2019s a huge integral part of a healthy marriage, and if it\u2019s not happening, and you might think it is fine, I bet if you asked your husband, it\u2019s not okay.\u00a0 It\u2019s something I think we need to rethink as Christian women.\u00a0 It\u2019s not bad it\u2019s good. It\u2019s not something to be pushed to the side or think of it like a to do list.\u00a0 It\u2019s something we need to really rethink and get on the same page with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay, one more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Remember your husband is hot to someone \u2013 remind him that he is to you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\u00a0 Look, I married this cute man, and you know what, when you live with a guy everyday and they go out the door \u2013 you see them at their worst, they didn\u2019t take the trash out, and they are bothering you.\u00a0 You don\u2019t think about the fact that they are going out there looking all cute and smelly and they are in a big world where there are a lot of people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You mean smelly good?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Smelly good! T hey are hot to somebody, and it would be a lot better if they were hot to you. Bring it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I just appreciate you being honest about it, because I do think there\u2019s a generation of young ladies who have grown up in this culture where in the process of the culture telling them how they can become powerful they\u2019ve eradicated the differences between men and women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn erasing them they have in my opinion weakened men and the relationship they have with their wives.\u00a0 Most young ladies don\u2019t know how to respect.\u00a0 They don\u2019t know how to build him up, encourage him, and they don\u2019t think of that being one of their primary responsibilities, and assignments in marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, and they think to themselves, I\u2019ll respect him when he starts deserving it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Will:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s conditional!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, it\u2019s going to be a while before he starts deserving it.\u00a0 He needs your respect to get there.\u00a0 You know, what I mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s how Paul summarized it at the end of Ephesians 5: Wives respect your husbands!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Susie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s not something that we need to feel squished down about.\u00a0 That is a privilege.\u00a0 If I can respect Will, and love him and build him up, and I see what he is able to do, in the impacting lives or just the person that he is, or the Dad that he is, that\u2019s my pleasure and my joy.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 He does the same thing for me!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>You know that\u2019s something we can talk about here on the radio and there are folks who are listening and thinking \u2013 okay that sounds easy, but in my home, in my situation, that is not an easy thing to do.\u00a0 We have to acknowledge that is the case for a lot of couples. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact a lot of the couples who come to our Weekend to Remember Marriage Conferences \u2013 they have lost respect for one another.\u00a0 The love has ebbed in their marriage.
