And I was hideous.\u00a0 I look like Jabba the Hutt if you've ever seen the Star Wars.\u00a0 I had to wear skater clothes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mean just covering every part of your body.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had to cover every part of my body.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t stand the sun being on my skin.\u00a0 Besides that I had to cover by body or people wouldn\u2019t be around me.\u00a0 It looked so bad because it\u2019s falling off and all that.\u00a0 I had to believe that God wanted me to serve him that day and when I would go through that day I would see the glory of God manifested in all the ways that God did that he never would have been able to do I believe if I wouldn't have trusted him enough to move forward with my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I would just see him do things.\u00a0 Then even in my own life.\u00a0 One of the things people always told me is pretty typical Dallas Seminary. I love your preaching.\u00a0 I love how good you are in the text but you\u2019re kind of not warm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s never been said about a Dallas Seminary guy. (laughter)\u00a0 That\u2019s never been said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think Mark Bailey just tuned out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In fact that endorsement check he was going to send you it\u2019s been cancelled.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But after that in fact Judy my wife will listen to the tapes that I did before I got sick and she would say I can tell right away that before you sick and I listen to them and I\u2019d go Good Night I was clueless when it came to the warmth.\u00a0 Now I speak at a conference and people come up to me and say I\u2019ve just never had anybody who moved my heart.\u00a0 You seemed so warm to me.\u00a0 And I\u2019m a hugger.\u00a0 I\u2019m speaking truth into people\u2019s lives and praying with them out in front of church.\u00a0 Things I never did before.\u00a0 That\u2019s the glory of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So what I hear you saying is when we get real\u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And share of God's work in our soul\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The good the bad and the ugly and when you\u2019re authentic\u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are declaring the glory of God.\u00a0 So when a third-grader\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood: <\/strong>\u00a0Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who is listening right now is who may be going to school or coming back from school it's a matter of representing God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To his peers, to his family, to his neighbors.\u00a0 It\u2019s being a reflector of who God is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And part of what we talked about this week is we sometimes have the idea that we have to get God dressed up.\u00a0 If we\u2019re going to reflect God we going to put the best clothes on him so he looks best out in the culture. What I hear you saying is when we show our own mess God gets glory because instead of trying to get him dressed and making him look perfect we see him at work taking messes and redeeming them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about the third grader.\u00a0 The third grader who doesn\u2019t come from a nuclear family who mommy and daddy are in a horrible flight or daddy just left.\u00a0 That third-grader can go to school knowing Jesus Christ loves him or her and Jesus is at school with him today same day he was yesterday before daddy left.\u00a0 That\u2019s pretty glorious.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And he is near the broken hearted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s pretty glorious. That\u2019s the kind of Jesus that my Bible lifts up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s at least one third-grader listening to the broadcast right now.\u00a0 You know what I want you to listen to these words because you don\u2019t have to be ashamed.\u00a0 You can delight even as a young person in what God is doing in your life and mommy and daddy's life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just because you\u2019re faithful and obedient. If you\u2019re one of those third graders who is listening I want you to write me.\u00a0 Write me and tell me how God used this to help give you purpose.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just remember Jesus loves you.\u00a0 Daddy left.\u00a0 Jesus says hey I\u2019ll sit with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ed we were talking before we came on the air today about the church where your pastor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Church of the Open Door \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s an historic Los Angeles church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s a great church, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Goes all the way back to R.A. Torrey.\u00a0 He was the founding pastor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>1915\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 At one point Dr. J. Vernon McGee was the pastor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 The Bible bus stopped there for many years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t get him started, Bob, he\u2019ll do an impersonation right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thousands of people came twice a week to hear Dr. McGee. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then there was a season where the church was in decline.\u00a0 You actually moved from downtown out into the suburbs, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right in Glen Dora east of Pasadena.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you came as the pastor of the Church of the Open Door about how many people were coming on Sunday mornings.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, 100 and some.\u00a0 It was on life support.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And over time through your ministry and through what God was doing through you the church began to grow and flourish, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 We began to get healthy and grow a little.\u00a0 Really great leaders.\u00a0 A lot of couples that put it all on the line with Judy and me, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then in the midst of that you got sick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, it felt like right when we were turning the corner was when I got sick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 What was the impact of your illness on the church and where it was headed?\u00a0 I mean now they have to do pulpit fill and they are thinking do we need a different senior pastor?\u00a0 Is our guy going to live?\u00a0 I mean all of that\u2019s going on.\u00a0 How did you lymphoma how has it affected your church?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s part of the glory of God.\u00a0 I can tell you about the first day I got back but I can also say that I came back.\u00a0 Not only did I come back after that year I believe a better pastor because of the compassion factor but I came back to different church.\u00a0 There is a unity at Church of the Open Door like I have never bought never felt it before. And I believe that the tipping point was my lymphoma.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I almost died\u2026you know the way a church is when its bickering\u2026it\u2019s people on the edges that are causing all the bickering and I think that is what caused people both sides to look at the bickerers and say you know we\u2019re tired of this.\u00a0 He\u2019s our pastor and we\u2019re moving forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really do believe that God\u2019s and I can say it God\u2019s gift of cancer was not only to me but was to Church of the Open Door.\u00a0\u00a0 And that it is a healthy church a unified church and that was part of the glory.\u00a0 That was what God did through my lymphoma.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe had that plan and of course I didn't know it when the specific thing he was asking me to believe was to go to church looking like Jabba the Hutt but that's what he had in mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you say God's gift of cancer you're not just saying out of I know is the Sunday school answer and I\u2019m supposed to give it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re saying that you really genuinely see this as a gift from God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I see it as an expression of his mercy.\u00a0 I see it as an expression of his mercy and his love.\u00a0 I think that God loves Ed Underwood so much that he wanted to release my giftedness and he knew that the only way that he could take some of the rough edges off my heart was to give me this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo as much as I hate it as much as I hate what it cost me in time and money.\u00a0 As much as I hate having to put up with all this skin stuff I love the fact that God loves me enough to make me better than I could ever be without him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you were itching over your whole body what you thought was God can't love me \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 And cause me to go through this.\u00a0 A father would not do this to his son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 A father would not do this to his child.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But now you\u2019re saying he loves me so much he puts me through that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s because I\u2019m not as good and as wise and as powerful of a father even as a grandfather and that\u2019s kind of hard to get as my heavenly father is.\u00a0 So I'm not smart enough to orchestrate events to allow suffering in my children's life but my father is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You believe that with all your heart and yet on that first Sunday you went back to preach your first sermon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, what a day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You protested having to go back and stand in the pulpit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, did I protest.\u00a0 I got up that morning and I realized how vain I am.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always been kind of\u2026well I\u2019ll just say it\u2026I don\u2019t look like most preachers.\u00a0 I\u2019m in shape.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laugher)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 How vain I was.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always been a fitness buff.\u00a0 And I could not wear anything else.\u00a0 I told Judy I said I look like some hideous monster who lost his skate board.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t even do the buttons.\u00a0 I was crying.\u00a0 I told Judy call Richard Dix who is the chairman and tell him I can\u2019t go.\u00a0 I won\u2019t be able to keep up.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even know what to say.\u00a0 It was just so emotional and I had not been back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long had you been out of the pulpit?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was months.\u00a0 I think it had been four or five months.\u00a0 So here I am and I can tell they are all looking at me.\u00a0 I knew I was horrible to look at.\u00a0 So I walked up there in my skater clothes and I was quoting, if you believe you will see the glory.\u00a0 If you believe you will see the glory.\u00a0 I was claiming that promise.\u00a0 I had a very weak voice and I stood up front of everyone and I said and you have to realize this is Church of the Open Door.\u00a0 Back then we were not demonstrative.\u00a0 There was never any standing up and yelling or anything like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The frozen chosen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were very very like that.\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how else to say it.\u00a0 So I stood up in front of the church and I\u2019m crying and I said for those of you who are guests today my name is Ed Underwood and I\u2019m still the pastor at Church of the Open Door.\u00a0 I was expecting to start preaching.\u00a0 But the whole crowd stood up.\u00a0 Very subdued lifelong Christians cheering.\u00a0 Newer Christians praise the Lord hallelujah.\u00a0 And I remember looking at them thinking Wow\u2026this is glorious.\u00a0 Now I don\u2019t know if I would have been willing to back my life up and go through it again but that was the glory that he showed me right then.\u00a0 I think to this day it was the greatest Sunday of my life.\u00a0 I can\u2019t even remember what I preached.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t remember what you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Don\u2019t remember what I said.\u00a0 I just remember God being there like he had never been there before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And isn't that just like God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m just thinking it\u2019s got the be the first time in the history of the Church of the Open Door that a preacher got up in skater clothes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, yes it was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 J. Vernon McGee might have taken issue with that.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know he did wear those Hawaiian shirts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ed, you have been a great sport and you have profoundly ministered to many here.\u00a0 I just want to reread the verse Jesus said to Martha did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s my sentence.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the question for the listener is what are you facing right now?\u00a0\u00a0 What's the issue? What\u2019s the challenge?\u00a0 What's the circumstance?\u00a0 Is it a lost job?\u00a0 A relative you can\u2019t get along with?\u00a0 Is it a marriage that\u2019s failing?\u00a0 Is a troublesome child or a troublesome parent?\u00a0 What\u2019s challenging your faith to the point of believing that the glory of God can be reflected through you in this circumstance?\u00a0 That's the question for every listener.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly. And our responsibility is to believe.\u00a0 He takes care of the glory part.\u00a0 We don\u2019t have to tell him what he should do.\u00a0 We just have to believe that Jesus is enough for you today, that\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 And we don\u2019t have to worry as you said earlier about protecting God\u2019s reputation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s going to show up and when he shows up he\u2019ll show off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what happened she\u2019s saying he\u2019s a four day man.\u00a0 The way the Jews did it back then you had to get them in the grave because after four days the face decomposes and you can\u2019t recognize them anymore.\u00a0 So she\u2019s been frantic to get Lazarus in the grave.\u00a0 He\u2019s finally in the grave at least I got that done and Jesus says remove the stone.\u00a0 And she looked at him and she said you can\u2019t do that behold he\u2019s a four day man.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to look at his face.\u00a0 Jesus looks at her and he says have I not told you that if you would believe you will see the glory of God.\u00a0 She had to believe that the son of God was saying remove this stone and that\u2019s going to be a good thing.\u00a0 And that went against all of her control and all of her Marthaness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you\u2019ve been in the situation in your own circumstance where you\u2019ve had to believe that a rash over 100 percent of your body is a good thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Over and over again.\u00a0 I can take you back to this morning just before I came in.\u00a0 I looked at myself in the mirror I got these new rashes.\u00a0 It brought me right back to this verse.\u00a0 I had to say Lord I believe that I am as alive today as anybody who is alive and you\u2019ve got something for me to do today.\u00a0 That\u2019s my belief.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want you to unpack the concept of the glory of God because I think those of us who have been in the Christian community for a number of years throw this term around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, we do yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s almost slang to us.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to minimize the glory of God.\u00a0 But unpack it for a third grader who\u2019s listening right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Okay, for a third grader it\u2019s easy.\u00a0 I had to believe that God wanted me to go out in public. And I was hideous.\u00a0 I look like Jabba the Hutt if you've ever seen the Star Wars.\u00a0 I had to wear skater clothes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mean just covering every part of your body.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had to cover every part of my body.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t stand the sun being on my skin.\u00a0 Besides that I had to cover by body or people wouldn\u2019t be around me.\u00a0 It looked so bad because it\u2019s falling off and all that.\u00a0 I had to believe that God wanted me to serve him that day and when I would go through that day I would see the glory of God manifested in all the ways that God did that he never would have been able to do I believe if I wouldn't have trusted him enough to move forward with my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I would just see him do things.\u00a0 Then even in my own life.\u00a0 One of the things people always told me is pretty typical Dallas Seminary. I love your preaching.\u00a0 I love how good you are in the text but you\u2019re kind of not warm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s never been said about a Dallas Seminary guy. (laughter)\u00a0 That\u2019s never been said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think Mark Bailey just tuned out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In fact that endorsement check he was going to send you it\u2019s been cancelled.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But after that in fact Judy my wife will listen to the tapes that I did before I got sick and she would say I can tell right away that before you sick and I listen to them and I\u2019d go Good Night I was clueless when it came to the warmth.\u00a0 Now I speak at a conference and people come up to me and say I\u2019ve just never had anybody who moved my heart.\u00a0 You seemed so warm to me.\u00a0 And I\u2019m a hugger.\u00a0 I\u2019m speaking truth into people\u2019s lives and praying with them out in front of church.\u00a0 Things I never did before.\u00a0 That\u2019s the glory of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So what I hear you saying is when we get real\u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And share of God's work in our soul\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The good the bad and the ugly and when you\u2019re authentic\u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are declaring the glory of God.\u00a0 So when a third-grader\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood: <\/strong>\u00a0Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who is listening right now is who may be going to school or coming back from school it's a matter of representing God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To his peers, to his family, to his neighbors.\u00a0 It\u2019s being a reflector of who God is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And part of what we talked about this week is we sometimes have the idea that we have to get God dressed up.\u00a0 If we\u2019re going to reflect God we going to put the best clothes on him so he looks best out in the culture. What I hear you saying is when we show our own mess God gets glory because instead of trying to get him dressed and making him look perfect we see him at work taking messes and redeeming them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about the third grader.\u00a0 The third grader who doesn\u2019t come from a nuclear family who mommy and daddy are in a horrible flight or daddy just left.\u00a0 That third-grader can go to school knowing Jesus Christ loves him or her and Jesus is at school with him today same day he was yesterday before daddy left.\u00a0 That\u2019s pretty glorious.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And he is near the broken hearted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s pretty glorious. That\u2019s the kind of Jesus that my Bible lifts up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s at least one third-grader listening to the broadcast right now.\u00a0 You know what I want you to listen to these words because you don\u2019t have to be ashamed.\u00a0 You can delight even as a young person in what God is doing in your life and mommy and daddy's life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just because you\u2019re faithful and obedient. If you\u2019re one of those third graders who is listening I want you to write me.\u00a0 Write me and tell me how God used this to help give you purpose.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just remember Jesus loves you.\u00a0 Daddy left.\u00a0 Jesus says hey I\u2019ll sit with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ed we were talking before we came on the air today about the church where your pastor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Church of the Open Door \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s an historic Los Angeles church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s a great church, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Goes all the way back to R.A. Torrey.\u00a0 He was the founding pastor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>1915\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 At one point Dr. J. Vernon McGee was the pastor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 The Bible bus stopped there for many years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t get him started, Bob, he\u2019ll do an impersonation right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thousands of people came twice a week to hear Dr. McGee. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then there was a season where the church was in decline.\u00a0 You actually moved from downtown out into the suburbs, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right in Glen Dora east of Pasadena.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you came as the pastor of the Church of the Open Door about how many people were coming on Sunday mornings.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, 100 and some.\u00a0 It was on life support.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And over time through your ministry and through what God was doing through you the church began to grow and flourish, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 We began to get healthy and grow a little.\u00a0 Really great leaders.\u00a0 A lot of couples that put it all on the line with Judy and me, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then in the midst of that you got sick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, it felt like right when we were turning the corner was when I got sick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 What was the impact of your illness on the church and where it was headed?\u00a0 I mean now they have to do pulpit fill and they are thinking do we need a different senior pastor?\u00a0 Is our guy going to live?\u00a0 I mean all of that\u2019s going on.\u00a0 How did you lymphoma how has it affected your church?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s part of the glory of God.\u00a0 I can tell you about the first day I got back but I can also say that I came back.\u00a0 Not only did I come back after that year I believe a better pastor because of the compassion factor but I came back to different church.\u00a0 There is a unity at Church of the Open Door like I have never bought never felt it before. And I believe that the tipping point was my lymphoma.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I almost died\u2026you know the way a church is when its bickering\u2026it\u2019s people on the edges that are causing all the bickering and I think that is what caused people both sides to look at the bickerers and say you know we\u2019re tired of this.\u00a0 He\u2019s our pastor and we\u2019re moving forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really do believe that God\u2019s and I can say it God\u2019s gift of cancer was not only to me but was to Church of the Open Door.\u00a0\u00a0 And that it is a healthy church a unified church and that was part of the glory.\u00a0 That was what God did through my lymphoma.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe had that plan and of course I didn't know it when the specific thing he was asking me to believe was to go to church looking like Jabba the Hutt but that's what he had in mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you say God's gift of cancer you're not just saying out of I know is the Sunday school answer and I\u2019m supposed to give it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re saying that you really genuinely see this as a gift from God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I see it as an expression of his mercy.\u00a0 I see it as an expression of his mercy and his love.\u00a0 I think that God loves Ed Underwood so much that he wanted to release my giftedness and he knew that the only way that he could take some of the rough edges off my heart was to give me this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo as much as I hate it as much as I hate what it cost me in time and money.\u00a0 As much as I hate having to put up with all this skin stuff I love the fact that God loves me enough to make me better than I could ever be without him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you were itching over your whole body what you thought was God can't love me \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 And cause me to go through this.\u00a0 A father would not do this to his son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 A father would not do this to his child.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But now you\u2019re saying he loves me so much he puts me through that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s because I\u2019m not as good and as wise and as powerful of a father even as a grandfather and that\u2019s kind of hard to get as my heavenly father is.\u00a0 So I'm not smart enough to orchestrate events to allow suffering in my children's life but my father is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You believe that with all your heart and yet on that first Sunday you went back to preach your first sermon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, what a day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You protested having to go back and stand in the pulpit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, did I protest.\u00a0 I got up that morning and I realized how vain I am.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always been kind of\u2026well I\u2019ll just say it\u2026I don\u2019t look like most preachers.\u00a0 I\u2019m in shape.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laugher)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 How vain I was.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always been a fitness buff.\u00a0 And I could not wear anything else.\u00a0 I told Judy I said I look like some hideous monster who lost his skate board.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t even do the buttons.\u00a0 I was crying.\u00a0 I told Judy call Richard Dix who is the chairman and tell him I can\u2019t go.\u00a0 I won\u2019t be able to keep up.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even know what to say.\u00a0 It was just so emotional and I had not been back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long had you been out of the pulpit?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was months.\u00a0 I think it had been four or five months.\u00a0 So here I am and I can tell they are all looking at me.\u00a0 I knew I was horrible to look at.\u00a0 So I walked up there in my skater clothes and I was quoting, if you believe you will see the glory.\u00a0 If you believe you will see the glory.\u00a0 I was claiming that promise.\u00a0 I had a very weak voice and I stood up front of everyone and I said and you have to realize this is Church of the Open Door.\u00a0 Back then we were not demonstrative.\u00a0 There was never any standing up and yelling or anything like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The frozen chosen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were very very like that.\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how else to say it.\u00a0 So I stood up in front of the church and I\u2019m crying and I said for those of you who are guests today my name is Ed Underwood and I\u2019m still the pastor at Church of the Open Door.\u00a0 I was expecting to start preaching.\u00a0 But the whole crowd stood up.\u00a0 Very subdued lifelong Christians cheering.\u00a0 Newer Christians praise the Lord hallelujah.\u00a0 And I remember looking at them thinking Wow\u2026this is glorious.\u00a0 Now I don\u2019t know if I would have been willing to back my life up and go through it again but that was the glory that he showed me right then.\u00a0 I think to this day it was the greatest Sunday of my life.\u00a0 I can\u2019t even remember what I preached.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t remember what you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Don\u2019t remember what I said.\u00a0 I just remember God being there like he had never been there before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And isn't that just like God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m just thinking it\u2019s got the be the first time in the history of the Church of the Open Door that a preacher got up in skater clothes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, yes it was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 J. Vernon McGee might have taken issue with that.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know he did wear those Hawaiian shirts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ed, you have been a great sport and you have profoundly ministered to many here.\u00a0 I just want to reread the verse Jesus said to Martha did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s my sentence.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the question for the listener is what are you facing right now?\u00a0\u00a0 What's the issue? What\u2019s the challenge?\u00a0 What's the circumstance?\u00a0 Is it a lost job?\u00a0 A relative you can\u2019t get along with?\u00a0 Is it a marriage that\u2019s failing?\u00a0 Is a troublesome child or a troublesome parent?\u00a0 What\u2019s challenging your faith to the point of believing that the glory of God can be reflected through you in this circumstance?\u00a0 That's the question for every listener.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly. And our responsibility is to believe.\u00a0 He takes care of the glory part.\u00a0 We don\u2019t have to tell him what he should do.\u00a0 We just have to believe that Jesus is enough for you today, that\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 And we don\u2019t have to worry as you said earlier about protecting God\u2019s reputation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s going to show up and when he shows up he\u2019ll show off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ed Underwood:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what happened
