<\/strong>Well, most people do begin a new marriage with that kind of a storybook vision, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut don\u2019t you wish you could look in six months later and see whether Eric and Lina are \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tstill enjoying that sunset that they rode off into or whether the sun has gone down and it\u2019s \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tnighttime now in the kingdom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> [Laughs.]\u00a0 And all because of the subject we\u2019re talking about all this week on the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbroadcast:\u00a0 unmet expectations.\u00a0 In some regards I believe that it\u2019s how you manage unmet expectations over the lifetime of your marriage that determines whether your marriage moves to harmony, peace and unity, or whether you harbor bitterness toward \u2026 toward your spouse.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you come up against an unmet expectation then you\u2019ve got to learn to adjust, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand sometimes the question is who\u2019s going to adjust to whom and whose expectation is going live and whose is going to die. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And we\u2019ve talked about how there\u2019s a cycle of unmet expectations.\u00a0 They result \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tin disappointment, disappointment results in hurt and hurt usually manifests itself in anger.\u00a0\u00a0 Anger usually punishes the other person, either by lashing out and saying things or doing things that hurt them or by withdrawing and retreating and killing them with silence, so to speak.\u00a0 But the whole progression starts with unmet expectations.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we\u2019ve been quoting all week Proverbs 13:12, which is a very familiar passage.\u00a0 \u201cHope deferred makes the heart sick: but desired fulfilled is a tree of life.\u201d\u00a0 And you know really, Bob, our goal in marriage ought to be with our spouses to be a tree of life, to fulfill desire, to meet those expectations.\u00a0 As we\u2019ve been talking about for the past couple of days there are going to be situations, times in our marriage, where we simply miss one another.\u00a0 We\u2019re \u2026 we\u2019re not clued in to the expectations of our spouse and so we don\u2019t meet them and we are absolutely clueless that we haven\u2019t achieved our spouse\u2019s ideal \u2026 what they really wanted and needed from us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You and your wife Barbara have written a book that\u2019s \u2026 well, it\u2019s like a primer for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tnewly married couples.\u00a0 It\u2019s called <em>Starting Your Marriage Right<\/em>.\u00a0 It can be used as a devotional.\u00a0 You can once a week go through one of these chapters and there\u2019s some discussion questions at the end.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I was thinking back because I looked at what\u2019s included in this book.\u00a0 When Mary Ann and I first got married we had been a part of a \u2026 of a larger group of singles.\u00a0 You know I had guy friends and she had girl friends and we all kind of hung around together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, some of my guy friends were also close friends of Mary Ann\u2019s.\u00a0 Some of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ther girlfriends were close friends of mine.\u00a0 When you get married those close friendship relationships with members of the opposite sex \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That were okay when you were single.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> All of a sudden it just feels a little different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it is different and I think \u2026 it can be a woman who makes a mistake here \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut I would say probably seven maybe eight times out of 10 it is the man who is a little na\u00efve when it comes to continuing on with a similar relationship with the opposite sex and kind of acting as though he\u2019s not married.\u00a0 And if \u2026 if you want to see your wife hurt deeply early in your marriage just miss this one because our wives do expect our loyalty, our focus, our attention to be on them and not to have a lot of the in-depth relationships.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd frankly, Bob, I\u2019m going to go a little bit further than that.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure \u2026 and I\u2019m going to sound horribly legalistic here \u2026 but I\u2019m just not sure I ought to have any in-depth, profoundly intimate relationship with a woman other than Barbara.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s playing with the fire.\u00a0 It\u2019s asking for trouble in the long haul of your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But I\u2019m not sure that what you just said anybody would react all that negatively to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the question comes, what do you mean by in-depth and intimate?\u00a0 What defines the boundaries of an appropriate relationship with somebody of the opposite sex from one that may go a little too far?\u00a0 And \u2026 and I\u2019ll give you an example.\u00a0 Again, before I was married I would be funny, playful, maybe even flirtatious \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Nah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2026 with girls who were friends even when I was dating Mary Ann.\u00a0 Sometimes I\u2019d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdo it with her right there.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t think anything of it.\u00a0 But that kind of behavior after you\u2019re married well \u2026 both us realized it \u2026 it doesn\u2019t feel right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, and \u2026 and you know, Bob, it \u2026 it had felt right to you as a single man for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyears.\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019d been used to relating to members of the opposite sex and maybe \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMary Ann as you dated but now all of a sudden there is a switch that has been thrown, a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tpledge and a vow that has been made that has set her apart from all the other members of the opposite sex.\u00a0 And she needs to know, as a woman, that there is loyalty to none other; that there is appropriate friendliness and being nice to the opposite sex, yes, but never approaching being flirtatious or playful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was talking with a couple a number of years ago who had been married only a matter of months.\u00a0 The husband had traveled away on a business trip and during the \u2026 the actual trip he ran into a friend of his, a classmate from school that he graduated from college with and she, too, was on a business trip.\u00a0 And interestingly enough they were both going to the same city so they had a hub city they went to and they had connecting flights on the same plane to the same city.\u00a0 And so when they arrived at the same city he asked her where she was going and, interestingly enough, it was to the same hotel.\u00a0 And so they said, you know, I was going to get a car.\u00a0 And she, well, I was going to get a car.\u00a0 Why do we just get the same car?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it turns out that they traveled together all the way to the city on the plane, then they got in a car together and traveled together to the same hotel, checked in, obviously had separate rooms.\u00a0 And the next day the husband called back home and just shared how on his way he\u2019d met this friend and traveled with her, they\u2019d shared car together and they\u2019d gone to the hotel with one another.\u00a0 And the telephone got kind of quiet.\u00a0 The husband didn\u2019t understand why his wife would take offense at that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow there may be some wives who would say, I wouldn\u2019t think anything of that, but I would imagine, Bob, they are in a minority.\u00a0 With all the unfaithfulness that is occurring in our culture today I think the standard of scripture is that we are to be above reproach and that concept in scripture calls us to avoid any appearance of evil. And in this case, this expectation by this wife of her husband provided a great opportunity for them to talk about what her expectations were of him and the opposite sex.\u00a0 This is a huge area for couples that I believe they must work through early in their marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019d like to suggest four steps that a husband and wife work through if they\u2019re going to hammer out some degree of comfort about how they both relate to the opposite sex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There is a wide spectrum here, Dennis, of husband and wives who as you\u2019ve said might not think anything of that casual encounter in another city to others who get really jealous when a wife just says \u201chi\u201d to someone at a church function or when a husband simply stands up to greet somebody at another social function.\u00a0 This is a tricky area where we\u2019ve got to understand what\u2019s going on in the heart of our mate and set up some clear boundaries and definition so that we can adjust to one another\u2019s expectations and do what\u2019s appropriate at the same time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 The first thing a couple needs to realize is it\u2019s not wrong to have expectations in this area.\u00a0 I want you to hear that loud and clear.\u00a0 It is never to have expectations of your spouse in this area.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, early in our marriage Barbara shared with me that one of the men who was coming over to an early morning Bible study in our home that I was leading was being overly friendly with her.\u00a0 Initially Barbara felt kind of flattered by his kindness and then she began to realize that his niceness was going on what was appropriate for him as a man to her.\u00a0 Then she went through a little mental gymnastics process where she thought it\u2019s really nothing.\u00a0 Then it happened again the next week we had the Bible study and then she thought it was silly that I should feel this way.\u00a0 What will Dennis think of me if I tell him that this guy seems to be too friendly toward me?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe had a choice and fortunately she told me and at that point whatever mystic or attraction that could have happened by that other man was gone.\u00a0 There was no temptation and I believe there were some non verbal cues from Barbara to this other guy telling him that what he was doing was inappropriate.\u00a0 The reason that occurred was because both of us knew at that point.\u00a0 In fact I think what I did was that I moved the Bible study from our home to another location to completely eliminate any chance for that guy to communicate with my wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now again some folks are going to hear that response and go, don\u2019t you think you over reacted just a little bit?\u00a0 I mean, can\u2019t people get wildly paranoid with these expectations that you are describing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure you can but this guy was a womanizer.\u00a0 Actually he came to faith in Christ out of situation where he had been unfaithful to his wife.\u00a0 I think my actions were warranted.\u00a0 Barbara\u2019s actions and concerns were warranted.\u00a0 In fact we both look back on that and think that is one of the wisest decisions we made early in our marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, it is not wrong to have expectations of your spouse in this area.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, you need to realize that you may have a differing standard or expectation than your spouse does in this area.\u00a0 And that\u2019s what I want you to hear:\u00a0 that that standard is something that you\u2019ve got to listen and you\u2019ve got to communicate over.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd really \u2026 that\u2019s really the third point.\u00a0 Begin the process of discussing this with one another, communicating your expectations with one another and hammering out standards that you both embrace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now typically in that situation, Dennis, one person is going to have, well, more \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tstrict standards than another and it could be the husband or it could be the wife.\u00a0 But one of the two is going to feel that certain limits are more appropriate than another is going to.\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to err on one side or the other, do you go with the strict side or do you go with the \u2026 the relaxed side?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There is no question.\u00a0 It\u2019s 10 times out of 10.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve got to err on one side or \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthe other, in my opinion, you honor the spouse who has the strict standard.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because that will result in trust.\u00a0 If you ignore their standard you dishonor their point of conviction and their concern, and at that point your spouse is left with unmet expectation, and in this situation it\u2019s not only the hurt that can occur from the unmet expectation but it\u2019s the \u2026 it\u2019s a point of being dishonored by.\u00a0 And it\u2019s also a point of trust.\u00a0 If my husband, if my wife doesn\u2019t honor me, doesn\u2019t prefer me \u2026 well, let me just read a passage of scripture here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to turn over to the book of \u2026 of Romans, chapter 12.\u00a0 And I\u2019ll tell you this is a great passage of scripture for any couple starting out there marriage to one another.\u00a0 Romans 12 is just chock full of great practical advice that \u2026 I want to give you one verse.\u00a0 Verse 10 of chapter 12: \u201cBe devoted to one another in brotherly love.\u00a0 Give preference to one another in honor.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cGive preference to one another in honor.\u201d\u00a0 And Bob I \u2013 I think if your spouse is weak here you defer to them, you honor them.\u00a0 You do everything possible.\u00a0 You go out of your way to give them no reason to struggle or wonder or question or be hurt.\u00a0 You do everything you can to meet their expectation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now if that strict standard winds up becoming unreasonable, leading to controlling\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tor manipulative behavior, if it starts to drift toward that kind of jealousy that you were describing earlier, then at that point you made need to bring in some mentoring \u2026 help from an older couple.\u00a0 You\u2019re not talking about simply deferring to somebody who would be a manipulator here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, absolutely not.\u00a0 In fact I\u2019m glad you brought that up because the couple you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tjust described where there is a controlling sense, it\u2019s unreasonable, it\u2019s unworkable, it\u2019s untamable, it\u2019s not able to be worked out either at \u2026 in church or in the workplace or in your neighborhood.\u00a0 I think at that point you\u2019ve got to find a third party to begin to address the issue with both of you because truthfully, Bob, there are some areas in one another\u2019s lives that we can\u2019t fix.\u00a0 A man can\u2019t fix everything in his wife that needs to be addressed or that needs to be improved.\u00a0 Same thing is true of a woman.\u00a0 She can\u2019t fix, she\u2019s can\u2019t get her husband to improve in every area of his life and so it\u2019s \u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think this really points out another need and another way you can use this book that Barbara and I have written, <em>Starting Your Marriage Right<\/em>, is to have a mentoring couple step into your lives once a month, twice a month and take on an issue like this and kind of hammer on it and maybe \u2026 maybe this issue demands more than \u2026 more than one discussion.\u00a0 It may mean this month and next month you talk about it.\u00a0 But you \u2026 you discuss who\u2019s being unreasonable.\u00a0 You talk about what\u2019s practical and how you work this out with one another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m going to let you know at the end of the broadcast today how you can get a copy \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof the book <em>Starting Your Marriage Right<\/em> so stay with us.\u00a0 You may want to grab a pencil and a piece of paper.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it\u2019s so freeing, Dennis, to be able to talk with another couple and \u2026 and open up about your feelings and your thoughts in this area and to learn that you\u2019re not alone in having those feelings or thoughts; that other couples have had to work these things out before you and that they\u2019ve done it successfully.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMary Ann and I were just with a group of friends recently and we were talking about raising children and about the challenges of raising children.\u00a0 And Mary Ann said, \u201cI\u2019ve just found great freedom in knowing \u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026 that we\u2019re not the only family who struggles with teenagers who aren\u2019t \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\trespectful all the time or little kids who get into trouble.\u00a0 It\u2019s just nice to know you\u2019re not going through this alone and that pretty much everybody has these same struggles.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly right and it helps you realize, you know what, we\u2019re normal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re not weird.\u00a0 These are normal adjustments that two people who spent 20, 25, 30 years of their lives being single who now, all of a sudden, realize they have to begin to learn a different way of relating to the opposite sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that really leads to my last one.\u00a0 I\u2019ve already touched on it a bit.\u00a0 Show honor to one another by becoming accountable to one another.\u00a0 Ephesians 5:21 talks about being subject to one another in the fear of God.\u00a0 And I think being subject to one another is one of the \u2026 one of the hallmarks of a Christian marriage.\u00a0 It means that I listen carefully to Barbara\u2019s concerns and as a result early in our marriage I never counseled a woman without my door open.\u00a0 In fact, I can still remember the last time I was ever in a car alone with a woman.\u00a0 And it came about because of discussions that Barbara and I had with one another.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it might interest our listeners to know that it wasn\u2019t in the first years of our marriage.\u00a0 I made the mistake \u2026 well, it was 10, 12 years into our marriage relationships and found myself in a car with another woman who wasn\u2019t married, and all of a sudden I realized, you know what, I do not like the way this looks, I don\u2019t like the way it feels and I want out of here.\u00a0 [Laughs.]\u00a0 I really didn\u2019t want to be in that car.\u00a0 And it came as \u2026 as a result, frankly, Bob, of seeing some very, very good friends lose their marriage, lose their family and lose their ministries because they had \u2026 had been na\u00efve in how they related to the opposite sex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know, it\u2019s back to the question you asked earlier, Bob.\u00a0 Are you going to err on the side of being a little too tight or are you going to err on the side of being, you know, too free?\u00a0 Well, I want to tell you, as you relate to the opposite sex, if you were my brother, my sister, my son, my daughter it wouldn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 I would advise you all the same.\u00a0 Steer clear of anything that even appears to be, looks likes evil or an inappropriate relationship with the opposite sex.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I know there have been occasions here in \u2026 in our ministry where we have had \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tpeople traveling to other cities \u2026 men and, on some occasions, women \u2026 folks who are unmarried.\u00a0 They may fly on the same flight and they\u2019ll get to the city and they\u2019ll think, are we really supposed to take two taxi cabs or rent two cars to get to the hotel?\u00a0 I mean, aren\u2019t we being a little legalistic here?\u00a0 And yet we have said as a ministry we\u2019d rather pay for two taxi rides to and from a hotel than to sow seeds in a marriage relationship that are going to help disintegrate it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, and Bob, I can tell you right now there are some listeners who think that \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twe\u2019re extreme and all I can say to you if \u2026 if you think that\u2019s extreme \u2026 certainly if two people want to have an affair they\u2019re going to find a way to have it.\u00a0 But I do not want to pour gasoline on a campfire.\u00a0 I do not want to bring combustible elements near one another.\u00a0 And you can disagree with our decision on that but maybe you\u2019ve never sat across the table or across the desk or in a counseling room with a woman who has been profoundly hurt by a husband who has breached his covenant by being unfaithful, but I have.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to do the best job I can as a husband and as a father and as a leader of ministry who is attempting to set a standard for our people here and to, again, avoid any appearance of evil.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think one way that couples can avoid some of these early pitfalls in marriage \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand instead of waiting for them to materialize in your relationship, have an opportunity to talk about some of the things that may be coming that you haven\u2019t even anticipated.\u00a0 There are 52 chapters in your book, <em>Starting Your Marriage Right<\/em>, where you and Barbara take 52 different issues that couples are likely experience in the first years of marriage.\u00a0 And these chapters give you an opportunity to begin discussing together these issues so you don\u2019t have to wait until something pops up in your marriage and creates a problem.\u00a0 You can already be thinking ahead about how you\u2019re going to respond when and if these situations occur.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\u00a0 And if they do occur than I think one of the other things the book \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thelps you do is apply grace; forgiveness, understanding and just an understanding that goes, you know what, we\u2019re okay and I\u2019m going to forgive you.\u00a0 Let\u2019s move forward and let\u2019s get a game plan for how we move forward from here, so that we grow together as a couple, we\u2019re building harmony, we\u2019re building peace and Bob, most importantly, we\u2019re building trust that both of us are in the process of making Jesus Christ the Lord of our lives and the builder of our marriage and family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m thinking of the number of young couples I know who are on the verge of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgetting married this spring or the couples who have just recently gotten married who would benefit from a book like this.\u00a0 The problem I have is that most of the people I know who are getting married also know other people here at the ministry so these couples wind up with about 35 or 40 copies of <em>Starting Your Marriage Right<\/em> as wedding gifts.\u00a0 [Laughter.]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou may not have that same experience in your community.\u00a0 You could be the first on your block to get somebody a copy of this book as a wedding gift.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s it.\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\u00a0 Ice cream maker.\u00a0 But stick this book in it.\u00a0 There are a lot people do begin a new marriage with that kind of a storybook vision, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut don\u2019t you wish you could look in six months later and see whether Eric and Lina are \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tstill enjoying that sunset that they rode off into or whether the sun has gone down and it\u2019s \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tnighttime now in the kingdom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> [Laughs.]\u00a0 And all because of the subject we\u2019re talking about all this week on the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbroadcast:\u00a0 unmet expectations.\u00a0 In some regards I believe that it\u2019s how you manage unmet expectations over the lifetime of your marriage that determines whether your marriage moves to harmony, peace and unity, or whether you harbor bitterness toward \u2026 toward your spouse.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you come up against an unmet expectation then you\u2019ve got to learn to adjust, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand sometimes the question is who\u2019s going to adjust to whom and whose expectation is going live and whose is going to die. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And we\u2019ve talked about how there\u2019s a cycle of unmet expectations.\u00a0 They result \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tin disappointment, disappointment results in hurt and hurt usually manifests itself in anger.\u00a0\u00a0 Anger usually punishes the other person, either by lashing out and saying things or doing things that hurt them or by withdrawing and retreating and killing them with silence, so to speak.\u00a0 But the whole progression starts with unmet expectations.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we\u2019ve been quoting all week Proverbs 13:12, which is a very familiar passage.\u00a0 \u201cHope deferred makes the heart sick: but desired fulfilled is a tree of life.\u201d\u00a0 And you know really, Bob, our goal in marriage ought to be with our spouses to be a tree of life, to fulfill desire, to meet those expectations.\u00a0 As we\u2019ve been talking about for the past couple of days there are going to be situations, times in our marriage, where we simply miss one another.\u00a0 We\u2019re \u2026 we\u2019re not clued in to the expectations of our spouse and so we don\u2019t meet them and we are absolutely clueless that we haven\u2019t achieved our spouse\u2019s ideal \u2026 what they really wanted and needed from us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You and your wife Barbara have written a book that\u2019s \u2026 well, it\u2019s like a primer for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tnewly married couples.\u00a0 It\u2019s called <em>Starting Your Marriage Right<\/em>.\u00a0 It can be used as a devotional.\u00a0 You can once a week go through one of these chapters and there\u2019s some discussion questions at the end.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I was thinking back because I looked at what\u2019s included in this book.\u00a0 When Mary Ann and I first got married we had been a part of a \u2026 of a larger group of singles.\u00a0 You know I had guy friends and she had girl friends and we all kind of hung around together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, some of my guy friends were also close friends of Mary Ann\u2019s.\u00a0 Some of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ther girlfriends were close friends of mine.\u00a0 When you get married those close friendship relationships with members of the opposite sex \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That were okay when you were single.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> All of a sudden it just feels a little different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it is different and I think \u2026 it can be a woman who makes a mistake here \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut I would say probably seven maybe eight times out of 10 it is the man who is a little na\u00efve when it comes to continuing on with a similar relationship with the opposite sex and kind of acting as though he\u2019s not married.\u00a0 And if \u2026 if you want to see your wife hurt deeply early in your marriage just miss this one because our wives do expect our loyalty, our focus, our attention to be on them and not to have a lot of the in-depth relationships.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd frankly, Bob, I\u2019m going to go a little bit further than that.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure \u2026 and I\u2019m going to sound horribly legalistic here \u2026 but I\u2019m just not sure I ought to have any in-depth, profoundly intimate relationship with a woman other than Barbara.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s playing with the fire.\u00a0 It\u2019s asking for trouble in the long haul of your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But I\u2019m not sure that what you just said anybody would react all that negatively to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the question comes, what do you mean by in-depth and intimate?\u00a0 What defines the boundaries of an appropriate relationship with somebody of the opposite sex from one that may go a little too far?\u00a0 And \u2026 and I\u2019ll give you an example.\u00a0 Again, before I was married I would be funny, playful, maybe even flirtatious \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Nah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2026 with girls who were friends even when I was dating Mary Ann.\u00a0 Sometimes I\u2019d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdo it with her right there.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t think anything of it.\u00a0 But that kind of behavior after you\u2019re married well \u2026 both us realized it \u2026 it doesn\u2019t feel right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, and \u2026 and you know, Bob, it \u2026 it had felt right to you as a single man for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyears.\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019d been used to relating to members of the opposite sex and maybe \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMary Ann as you dated but now all of a sudden there is a switch that has been thrown, a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tpledge and a vow that has been made that has set her apart from all the other members of the opposite sex.\u00a0 And she needs to know, as a woman, that there is loyalty to none other; that there is appropriate friendliness and being nice to the opposite sex, yes, but never approaching being flirtatious or playful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was talking with a couple a number of years ago who had been married only a matter of months.\u00a0 The husband had traveled away on a business trip and during the \u2026 the actual trip he ran into a friend of his, a classmate from school that he graduated from college with and she, too, was on a business trip.\u00a0 And interestingly enough they were both going to the same city so they had a hub city they went to and they had connecting flights on the same plane to the same city.\u00a0 And so when they arrived at the same city he asked her where she was going and, interestingly enough, it was to the same hotel.\u00a0 And so they said, you know, I was going to get a car.\u00a0 And she, well, I was going to get a car.\u00a0 Why do we just get the same car?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it turns out that they traveled together all the way to the city on the plane, then they got in a car together and traveled together to the same hotel, checked in, obviously had separate rooms.\u00a0 And the next day the husband called back home and just shared how on his way he\u2019d met this friend and traveled with her, they\u2019d shared car together and they\u2019d gone to the hotel with one another.\u00a0 And the telephone got kind of quiet.\u00a0 The husband didn\u2019t understand why his wife would take offense at that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow there may be some wives who would say, I wouldn\u2019t think anything of that, but I would imagine, Bob, they are in a minority.\u00a0 With all the unfaithfulness that is occurring in our culture today I think the standard of scripture is that we are to be above reproach and that concept in scripture calls us to avoid any appearance of evil. And in this case, this expectation by this wife of her husband provided a great opportunity for them to talk about what her expectations were of him and the opposite sex.\u00a0 This is a huge area for couples that I believe they must work through early in their marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019d like to suggest four steps that a husband and wife work through if they\u2019re going to hammer out some degree of comfort about how they both relate to the opposite sex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There is a wide spectrum here, Dennis, of husband and wives who as you\u2019ve said might not think anything of that casual encounter in another city to others who get really jealous when a wife just says \u201chi\u201d to someone at a church function or when a husband simply stands up to greet somebody at another social function.\u00a0 This is a tricky area where we\u2019ve got to understand what\u2019s going on in the heart of our mate and set up some clear boundaries and definition so that we can adjust to one another\u2019s expectations and do what\u2019s appropriate at the same time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 The first thing a couple needs to realize is it\u2019s not wrong to have expectations in this area.\u00a0 I want you to hear that loud and clear.\u00a0 It is never to have expectations of your spouse in this area.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, early in our marriage Barbara shared with me that one of the men who was coming over to an early morning Bible study in our home that I was leading was being overly friendly with her.\u00a0 Initially Barbara felt kind of flattered by his kindness and then she began to realize that his niceness was going on what was appropriate for him as a man to her.\u00a0 Then she went through a little mental gymnastics process where she thought it\u2019s really nothing.\u00a0 Then it happened again the next week we had the Bible study and then she thought it was silly that I should feel this way.\u00a0 What will Dennis think of me if I tell him that this guy seems to be too friendly toward me?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe had a choice and fortunately she told me and at that point whatever mystic or attraction that could have happened by that other man was gone.\u00a0 There was no temptation and I believe there were some non verbal cues from Barbara to this other guy telling him that what he was doing was inappropriate.\u00a0 The reason that occurred was because both of us knew at that point.\u00a0 In fact I think what I did was that I moved the Bible study from our home to another location to completely eliminate any chance for that guy to communicate with my wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now again some folks are going to hear that response and go, don\u2019t you think you over reacted just a little bit?\u00a0 I mean, can\u2019t people get wildly paranoid with these expectations that you are describing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure you can but this guy was a womanizer.\u00a0 Actually he came to faith in Christ out of situation where he had been unfaithful to his wife.\u00a0 I think my actions were warranted.\u00a0 Barbara\u2019s actions and concerns were warranted.\u00a0 In fact we both look back on that and think that is one of the wisest decisions we made early in our marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, it is not wrong to have expectations of your spouse in this area.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, you need to realize that you may have a differing standard or expectation than your spouse does in this area.\u00a0 And that\u2019s what I want you to hear:\u00a0 that that standard is something that you\u2019ve got to listen and you\u2019ve got to communicate over.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd really \u2026 that\u2019s really the third point.\u00a0 Begin the process of discussing this with one another, communicating your expectations with one another and hammering out standards that you both embrace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now typically in that situation, Dennis, one person is going to have, well, more \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tstrict standards than another and it could be the husband or it could be the wife.\u00a0 But one of the two is going to feel that certain limits are more appropriate than another is going to.\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to err on one side or the other, do you go with the strict side or do you go with the \u2026 the relaxed side?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There is no question.\u00a0 It\u2019s 10 times out of 10.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve got to err on one side or \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthe other, in my opinion, you honor the spouse who has the strict standard.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because that will result in trust.\u00a0 If you ignore their standard you dishonor their point of conviction and their concern, and at that point your spouse is left with unmet expectation, and in this situation it\u2019s not only the hurt that can occur from the unmet expectation but it\u2019s the \u2026 it\u2019s a point of being dishonored by.\u00a0 And it\u2019s also a point of trust.\u00a0 If my husband, if my wife doesn\u2019t honor me, doesn\u2019t prefer me \u2026 well, let me just read a passage of scripture here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to turn over to the book of \u2026 of Romans, chapter 12.\u00a0 And I\u2019ll tell you this is a great passage of scripture for any couple starting out there marriage to one another.\u00a0 Romans 12 is just chock full of great practical advice that \u2026 I want to give you one verse.\u00a0 Verse 10 of chapter 12: \u201cBe devoted to one another in brotherly love.\u00a0 Give preference to one another in honor.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cGive preference to one another in honor.\u201d\u00a0 And Bob I \u2013 I think if your spouse is weak here you defer to them, you honor them.\u00a0 You do everything possible.\u00a0 You go out of your way to give them no reason to struggle or wonder or question or be hurt.\u00a0 You do everything you can to meet their expectation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now if that strict standard winds up becoming unreasonable, leading to controlling\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tor manipulative behavior, if it starts to drift toward that kind of jealousy that you were describing earlier, then at that point you made need to bring in some mentoring \u2026 help from an older couple.\u00a0 You\u2019re not talking about simply deferring to somebody who would be a manipulator here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, absolutely not.\u00a0 In fact I\u2019m glad you brought that up because the couple you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tjust described where there is a controlling sense, it\u2019s unreasonable, it\u2019s unworkable, it\u2019s untamable, it\u2019s not able to be worked out either at \u2026 in church or in the workplace or in your neighborhood.\u00a0 I think at that point you\u2019ve got to find a third party to begin to address the issue with both of you because truthfully, Bob, there are some areas in one another\u2019s lives that we can\u2019t fix.\u00a0 A man can\u2019t fix everything in his wife that needs to be addressed or that needs to be improved.\u00a0 Same thing is true of a woman.\u00a0 She can\u2019t fix, she\u2019s can\u2019t get her husband to improve in every area of his life and so it\u2019s \u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think this really points out another need and another way you can use this book that Barbara and I have written, <em>Starting Your Marriage Right<\/em>, is to have a mentoring couple step into your lives once a month, twice a month and take on an issue like this and kind of hammer on it and maybe \u2026 maybe this issue demands more than \u2026 more than one discussion.\u00a0 It may mean this month and next month you talk about it.\u00a0 But you \u2026 you discuss who\u2019s being unreasonable.\u00a0 You talk about what\u2019s practical and how you work this out with one another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m going to let you know at the end of the broadcast today how you can get a copy \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof the book <em>Starting Your Marriage Right<\/em> so stay with us.\u00a0 You may want to grab a pencil and a piece of paper.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it\u2019s so freeing, Dennis, to be able to talk with another couple and \u2026 and open up about your feelings and your thoughts in this area and to learn that you\u2019re not alone in having those feelings or thoughts; that other couples have had to work these things out before you and that they\u2019ve done it successfully.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMary Ann and I were just with a group of friends recently and we were talking about raising children and about the challenges of raising children.\u00a0 And Mary Ann said, \u201cI\u2019ve just found great freedom in knowing \u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026 that we\u2019re not the only family who struggles with teenagers who aren\u2019t \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\trespectful all the time or little kids who get into trouble.\u00a0 It\u2019s just nice to know you\u2019re not going through this alone and that pretty much everybody has these same struggles.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly right and it helps you realize, you know what, we\u2019re normal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re not weird.\u00a0 These are normal adjustments that two people who spent 20, 25, 30 years of their lives being single who now, all of a sudden, realize they have to begin to learn a different way of relating to the opposite sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that really leads to my last one.\u00a0 I\u2019ve already touched on it a bit.\u00a0 Show honor to one another by becoming accountable to one another.\u00a0 Ephesians 5:21 talks about being subject to one another in the fear of God.\u00a0 And I think being subject to one another is one of the \u2026 one of the hallmarks of a Christian marriage.\u00a0 It means that I listen carefully to Barbara\u2019s concerns and as a result early in our marriage I never counseled a woman without my door open.\u00a0 In fact, I can still remember the last time I was ever in a car alone with a woman.\u00a0 And it came about because of discussions that Barbara and I had with one another.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it might interest our listeners to know that it wasn\u2019t in the first years of our marriage.\u00a0 I made the mistake \u2026 well, it was 10, 12 years into our marriage relationships and found myself in a car with another woman who wasn\u2019t married, and all of a sudden I realized, you know what, I do not like the way this looks, I don\u2019t like the way it feels and I want out of here.\u00a0 [Laughs.]\u00a0 I really didn\u2019t want to be in that car.\u00a0 And it came as \u2026 as a result, frankly, Bob, of seeing some very, very good friends lose their marriage, lose their family and lose their ministries because they had \u2026 had been na\u00efve in how they related to the opposite sex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know, it\u2019s back to the question you asked earlier, Bob.\u00a0 Are you going to err on the side of being a little too tight or are you going to err on the side of being, you know, too free?\u00a0 Well, I want to tell you, as you relate to the opposite sex, if you were my brother, my sister, my son, my daughter it wouldn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 I would advise you all the same.\u00a0 Steer clear of anything that even appears to be, looks likes evil or an inappropriate relationship with the opposite sex.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I know there have been occasions here in \u2026 in our ministry where we have had \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tpeople traveling to other cities \u2026 men and, on some occasions, women \u2026 folks who are unmarried.\u00a0 They may fly on the same flight and they\u2019ll get to the city and they\u2019ll think, are we really supposed to take two taxi cabs or rent two cars to get to the hotel?\u00a0 I mean, aren\u2019t we being a little legalistic here?\u00a0 And yet we have said as a ministry we\u2019d rather pay for two taxi rides to and from a hotel than to sow seeds in a marriage relationship that are going to help disintegrate it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, and Bob, I can tell you right now there are some listeners who think that \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twe\u2019re extreme and all I can say to you if \u2026 if you think that\u2019s extreme \u2026 certainly if two people want to have an affair they\u2019re going to find a way to have it.\u00a0 But I do not want to pour gasoline on a campfire.\u00a0 I do not want to bring combustible elements near one another.\u00a0 And you can disagree with our decision on that but maybe you\u2019ve never sat across the table or across the desk or in a counseling room with a woman who has been profoundly hurt by a husband who has breached his covenant by being unfaithful, but I have.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to do the best job I can as a husband and as a father and as a leader of ministry who is attempting to set a standard for our people here and to, again, avoid any appearance of evil.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think one way that couples can avoid some of these early pitfalls in marriage \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand instead of waiting for them to materialize in your relationship, have an opportunity to talk about some of the things that may be coming that you haven\u2019t even anticipated.\u00a0 There are 52 chapters in your book, <em>Starting Your Marriage Right<\/em>, where you and Barbara take 52 different issues that couples are likely experience in the first years of marriage.\u00a0 And these chapters give you an opportunity to begin discussing together these issues so you don\u2019t have to wait until something pops up in your marriage and creates a problem.\u00a0 You can already be thinking ahead about how you\u2019re going to respond when and if these situations occur.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\u00a0 And if they do occur than I think one of the other things the book \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thelps you do is apply grace; forgiveness, understanding and just an understanding that goes, you know what, we\u2019re okay and I\u2019m going to forgive you.\u00a0 Let\u2019s move forward and let\u2019s get a game plan for how we move forward from here, so that we grow together as a couple, we\u2019re building harmony, we\u2019re building peace and Bob, most importantly, we\u2019re building trust that both of us are in the process of making Jesus Christ the Lord of our lives and the builder of our marriage and family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m thinking of the number of young couples I know who are on the verge of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgetting married this spring or the couples who have just recently gotten married who would benefit from a book like this.\u00a0 The problem I have is that most of the people I know who are getting married also know other people here at the ministry so these couples wind up with about 35 or 40 copies of <em>Starting Your Marriage Right<\/em> as wedding gifts.\u00a0 [Laughter.]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou may not have that same experience in your community.\u00a0 You could be the first on your block to get somebody a copy of this book as a wedding gift.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know I think of all the \u2026 the wedding invitations we get here.\u00a0 One of the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthings you can do is you can still give them that dish or that goblet of that silverware \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Ice cream maker.\u00a0 That\u2019s our preferred gift.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s it.\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\u00a0 Ice cream maker.\u00a0 But stick this book in it.\u00a0 There are a lot \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof gifts that we give that don\u2019t help them turn their commitment into a marriage.\u00a0 Give \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthem something that helps them in
