Smith was learning an important lesson about the power of negative peer pressure, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Then, all of a sudden, a little thing, \"Oh, yeah, come over here, come over here and take a ride with us,\" and \"I'll try it one time, it won't hurt,\" and all I can tell you is I got deceived.\u00a0 The Lord said if there's a favorite name you can have for Satan, he is the great deceiver, and I got deceived and, all of a sudden, I found myself in this pit where I couldn't get out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0This is FamilyLife Today for Wednesday, February 15th.\u00a0 Our host is the president of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine and today Michael W. Smith tells us about his personal experience with the God of the Second Chance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0And welcome to FamilyLife Today, thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition.\u00a0 You would have known, if I hadn't mentioned it, that that was Michael W. Smith, wouldn't you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0I would have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0A distinctive voice, whether he's singing or speaking and, of course, this week everybody is noticing that he's now a movie star.\u00a0 Michael has moved up onto your local Cineplex screen in a new movie that is opening this weekend that's called \"The Second Chance.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0You know, we always delight in a great story that honors God, and Michael W. Smith's life has done that \u2013 most of it.\u00a0 What many of our listeners perhaps don't know about him is that in addition to the 25 records that were number one, the 10 Golds, the five Platinums, and more than 7 million records sold is that he went through a period in his adolescence when he rebelled, he became a prodigal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I was traveling when he stopped by the offices here, and you sit down with him in a studio and let the tape roll as we took a slice out of Michael W. Smith's life, and I think you, as a listener, are going to really enjoy getting to know this great entertainer who is about to become a movie star in an up close and personal way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Describe for me the home in which you grew up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0A great home.\u00a0 My mom and dad did a lot of serving, as they still do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Your mom was a caterer, and she still cooks for some things for family affairs, but also when you get a group together, she'll still cater the meal, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Especially when the band, we all go into rehearsals, production doesn't come up, the lights don't come up, all the band wants to know \u2013 when is mom coming with the homemade rolls?\u00a0 She's terrific \u2013 my dad as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0What was his influence on your life?\u00a0 If you had to look back and say, \"Here is how he marked me as a young man growing up?\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0You know, just the way he loved my mom.\u00a0 You got the sense that no matter what came his way, I knew deep down inside, my dad would never leave my mom, he'll never leave this family.\u00a0 He made a commitment, and he was a hard worker.\u00a0 He worked at an oil refinery, Ashland Oil.\u00a0 He worked swing shift all his life.\u00a0 If don't know what that is, days one week, evenings the next midnight.\u00a0 He coached me in every league that I was ever in baseball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0What did you play?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I played shortstop.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Yeah, were you any good?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I was a pretty good baseball player?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Were you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0That's what I wanted to do, growing up, I wanted to play for the Cincinnati Reds.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Played high school ball?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0At 15 I didn't make the All-Stars.\u00a0 That's when it all changed for me.\u00a0 I thought, \"You know, I think music might be my destiny.\"\u00a0 And knew deep down inside that God had somehow had a call on my life.\u00a0 I couldn't understand it, and I didn't even know how to explain it, but I just knew \u2013 I even walked down the aisle \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah, I became a Christian when I was 10, walked down the aisle then, never forget it \u2013 then gave my heart to Christ, and then at 15 I walked back down.\u00a0 It's the only two times I ever walked down the aisle at my church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0And at 10, what do you remember about what it was that stirred your heart that day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I just knew that I would never make it throughout my life if I don't have the Lord in my life.\u00a0 I truly believe what He did for me was really true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0You walked the aisle at 15 a second time, and that was saying, \"My music belongs to you?\"\u00a0 Is that what that was about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah, I just felt like it was a recommitment, but music had something to do with it.\u00a0 Again, like I said earlier, I can't explain it.\u00a0 It was almost like, \"Lord, I'm going to commit my life to you in my service, in whatever that occupation is.\"\u00a0 I thought it would be music.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0How did you wind up in Nashville?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I knew that there were three music capitals of the world, and that was Los Angeles, New York, and Nashville, and I certainly \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0\u2026 didn't want to go to the first two?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I didn't, which I probably belonged in LA, you know, in terms of the music that was going on, because I was a big Toto fan, and all the pop records were made in LA.\u00a0 But I moved to Nashville, because I had a few contacts in Nashville, very few, and it was only a five-and-a-half-hour drive from my hometown in West Virginia.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0And did Mom and Dad say, \"So long, God bless, this is fine with us?\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0They did, but it was hard.\u00a0 Oh, my mom, oh, you know, I was 20 when I left \u2013 I think I was 20 when I finally left home and, you know, I sent resume, and I went and met with this publisher, and he loved my music, he hated my lyrics, but he just thought, \"Man, you've got \u2013 there's something about the way you write music is very, very unique,\" that's what he told me.\u00a0 He says, \"I think you should move.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0So I went back home, and a month later packed up this beat-up Chevrolet.\u00a0 My mom, she couldn't watch me, she just lost it and ran back in the house, and I knew when I got on the freeway, I knew that I would never move back to West Virginia.\u00a0 I just knew it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0As you just had that sense, \"I'll never be back here again,\" was that exciting or frightening or both?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Both.\u00a0 You know, you're going into uncharted territory.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0You're on your own.\u00a0 Did you know anybody in Nashville?\u00a0 Like, was there a place to spend the night when you got there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I moved in with somebody that I knew through another person and was going to go landscape, I was going to be a landscaper, you know, and \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Everybody's got to have a day job.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Everybody's got to have a day job, and then I would write songs on the side.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0What do you think it was that first turned the trajectory of your life so that you were just heading down the wrong road?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Well, I think I was reckless, I think I was unwise, I thought I could play with the fire and not get burned, you know.\u00a0 You need to understand, all growing up I was just on fire \u2013 I was a Jesus freak, I was.\u00a0 I wore a big wood cross around my neck, had a leather Scofield Bible, and all the friends my age were all drinking 12 packs of beer and smoking dope, you know?\u00a0 I was in Bible study six nights.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0And you were staying away from all of that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Staying away from it.\u00a0 All my friends were older.\u00a0 They all were \u2013 me being a sophomore, they're all in college, and I thought that out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Were Mom and Dad aware of what was going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah, they were, especially the year after that, they really were aware.\u00a0 I mean, I'd probably know they were probably very aware from day one.\u00a0 They were trying to give me my space, I know they prayed for me big time, and I was confronted a few times by them, but it was never \u2013 it was always in love, you know, and I look back on it and go, \"Wow, what a mom and dad.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0If you found out one of your kids was off in the ditch, would you do what your parents did?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah, definitely.\u00a0 I mean, my parents weren't hands on because I was in Nashville.\u00a0 That's when I had my little nervous breakdown, you know.\u00a0 You know, I'd probably just go love on my kids.\u00a0 If it was Ryan or Tyler, you know, I'd probably \u2013 the last thing I would was chew them out, because I think they know.\u00a0 They know the consequences.\u00a0 They are all, fortunately, are God-followers.\u00a0 It's pretty cool.\u00a0 Some more mature than others, where you see Ryan and Whitney, my 21- and 19-year-old, you sit and read a little bit of what they're journaling, you know, it's mind-boggling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0It's pretty awesome?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Oh, it's like you're sitting there and go \u2013 the whole career could all fall apart, we could go bankrupt, but you know what?\u00a0 I'm a rich man because of what's happening with my kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a03 John 4 says, \"I have no greater joy than this \u2013 to see my children walking in the truth.\"\u00a0 That's true, isn't it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0You came to the end of yourself, you found yourself in the trough with the pigs.\u00a0 You said it was a breakdown?\u00a0 What happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0It was 1979, it was October and, really, throughout that summer of '79, I knew that if I didn't make a change that I was going to potentially die.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I almost had a drug overdose.\u00a0 One time I didn't something really stupid, I thought I was dying.\u00a0 That woke me up.\u00a0 But as much as I tried to get out of the pit, I couldn't get out.\u00a0 I tried.\u00a0 I wanted to, but I couldn't.\u00a0 It was like I was stuck, you know?\u00a0 So I began to pray that God would do whatever He had to do to get my attention \u2013 break my legs, car wreck, just don't kill me, but get my attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0You're asking for the discipline of God \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Because I know if He doesn't \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0\u2026 you're dead \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0\u2026 it could be over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0And did He get your attention?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0How did he do it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0He took my joy away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0What do you mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I became very, very depressed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Which is \u2013 I mean, talk to all my people \u2013 well, the folks I grew up with in West Virginia and who I am in Nashville.\u00a0 I'm, like, \"Hey, what's up,\" you know, it's like, I'm a people person.\u00a0 All of sudden, boy, it all turned, and I know my mom and dad are on their knees.\u00a0 I know they're crying and praying for me every night.\u00a0 They know what's going on, you know, and they're \u2013 what can they do, you know?\u00a0 I'm an adult.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I'll never forget, I was in my kitchen at midnight, and I literally fell to the ground \u2013 I was all by myself \u2013 and I felt like I had a breakdown and for at least two hours, I was curled up like a baby, and just sweating and crying and shaking and it was just the weirdest thing.\u00a0 And I remember at the end of that, 2 or 3:00 in the morning, this calm came over me, and I felt like the presence of God showed up; that God came and stretched His hand, just like that painting, you know, that hand comes down from heaven and just came in through the ceiling of that kitchen and grabbed my hand, and I woke up the next morning, and I haven't been the same since.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0A complete turnaround, I mean, walked away?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I remember I went out and tried to \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0\u2026 tried to get high?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah, and I hated it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0And I thought, \"That's weird.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Yeah [chuckles]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0And then I said, \"God, is that you?\u00a0 Are you really taking my desire away?\u00a0 Oh, God, please take my desire away.\"\u00a0 Then, all of a sudden, I quit doing all those things.\u00a0 It's, like, it didn't bring any peace, and then I also get the sense of going, \"Ooohooo, man, God has rescued me.\u00a0 Boy, does He have a plan for my life.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I think I was trying to write Christian songs, I don't know, that didn't work too well.\u00a0 And I walk in the next day, and my publishers says, \"Can I see you a moment?\u00a0 I want to talk to you.\"\u00a0 He says, \"Look, this is kind of bizarre.\u00a0 I really want you to stay here and write songs, but there's a group called Higher Ground, they're a Gospel group, and they're looking for a piano player.\u00a0 And my eyes lit up big time, because I knew that was the Lord.\u00a0 Isn't it interesting, the very next day after this breakdown, and I just said, \"I'll take the job, I'll just take it.\"\u00a0 And, for the next nine to 10 months on the road with them, they nurtured me back to health spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Really?\u00a0 You have undoubtedly seen guys involved, either trying to get into Christian music or guys who have gotten into Christian music who have wound up messed up.\u00a0 Have you been able to go to those guys and, with the background you've had, say, \"You've got to get some help, you've got to cry out to the Lord?\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0You've seen it happen?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Some of them, yeah.\u00a0 You know what? In all that, I mean, you know, the wild thing is every one of us are susceptible of taking the dive.\u00a0 So what you have to do is you have to \u2013 I don't care how much you love God, there's traps out there.\u00a0 So what you have to do is you have to set up parameters and boundaries and support teams at all costs, period \u2013 at all costs.\u00a0 And unfortunately a lot of these young bands, some of these younger artists, they get pushed out there \u2013 I blame a lot of that on the record company.\u00a0 I won't get into all that, you know, we all care about their careers but what about their spiritual life, you know?\u00a0 And we throw them out to the wolves, and there's no pastor out there with them, and then it's just a complete disaster. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0So a lot of times, I've been able to counsel and say, \"Here is what I think you need to do\" in terms of support teams and accountability.\u00a0 And I've, fortunately, had that in my life now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Yeah, what do you do?\u00a0 What do you do?\u00a0 What kind of accountability?\u00a0\u00a0 What measures have you set up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I have some men in my life that I kind of hold myself accountable to.\u00a0 If they look and think I'm getting a big head and whatever, they'll come up and slap me around \u2013 \"Snap out of it.\"\u00a0 They're not impressed.\u00a0 And then my biggest influence, other than my wife \u2013 she's probably my biggest accountability partner \u2013 probably the one person that's had the most impact on my life is my pastor, Don Finto, and I've walked with Don for \u2013 well, ever since that incident in '79, we've walked 25, 26 years together.\u00a0 So he has the real freedom to speak into my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0As your career has gotten bigger \u2013 three Grammy Awards, 40 Dove Awards, 13 million unit sales \u2013 do the temptations get harder?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0You know, I think the temptations are different.\u00a0 For example, the whole movie star, success, selling records, being the king of the hill, I could care less, because I know that stuff doesn't bring you peace.\u00a0 So, from experience, I know what brings true peace, is walking with God and being in His will.\u00a0 That's why I'm always, \"God, don't let me miss it.\u00a0 It's too late to miss it.\"\u00a0 So I'm here for a short time, let me be about Your business and Your business only, because I know that's the bottom line, that's what needs to happen.\u00a0 But all the other temptations like, I mean, it could be, well, you think that \u2013 sometimes you think, oh, everything is cool in terms of other women and all that sort of thing \u2013 I am so in love with my wife, my marriage has never been better.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, you know, you think you've got that old thing locked up, everything is cool, I'm not even tempted, and you think, \"Wow, God, thank you for that,\" and then, all of a sudden, some woman walks by, and you do a double-turn, and you go \"Whoa, wait, God, God,\" you know, and so you just \u2013 you know, you're tempted but what do you do with the temptation, and that's when you don't look back the second time, and you go, \"I'm going to walk straight ahead and keep my eyes straight forward.\"\u00a0 It comes up, and it surprises you, that's the wild thing, and that's Satan, you know, just trying to trap you again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Well, again, that is Michael W. Smith, who becomes a movie star this weekend, and would to God that there would be more movie stars who have that kind of a worldview, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0A family man, how about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0And not only that, but someone who can articulate a story of being redeemed.\u00a0 He went from what could have been the destruction of his life and came to a place where not only has he experienced success but he has found the peace of walking with God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0And just to apply to where families may find themselves today, just a couple of lessons from his life \u2013 friends were powerful in Michael's life.\u00a0 When he lost his Christian friends, he described himself as vulnerable.\u00a0 He lost his support group, and when we observe our teenagers hanging with the wrong crowd \u2013 Barbara and I, when we would do that, if we would see one of our children beginning to drift toward the wrong set of friends as we grew older in raising our children, we gave greater, shall I say, \"reverence\" to the power of those friends for evil in our children's life than we did earlier as we started out raising teenagers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Well, you kept reinforcing that verse from 1 Corinthians, \"Do not be deceived.\u00a0 Bad company corrupts good morals.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0I'm telling you, that verse is true, and you saw how close Michael's life came to destruction because of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0The second thing that I really leave this story with today in terms of application, is the power of two things \u2013 the power of God in redemption of a human being, the Gospel does change people's lives, and we cannot look at a circumstance in a child's life, in a spouse's life, in a friend's life, and say, \"That's too big for God.\u00a0 He can do it.\u00a0 He's been doing it since the foundation of the earth, and that's what God delights in.\u00a0 And the other thing is not only the power of God but the power of a family.\u00a0 Michael W. Smith talks about his formative years.","meta_box":{"show_notes":"","transcript_url":"https:\/\/transcript.familylifetoday.com\/fl2006-02-15.pdf","transcript_content":"<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0All my friends were older.\u00a0 Me being a sophomore, they're all in college, and I thought that was cool, I'm hanging out with these older people, and they're all into the Lord and reading the Word, and we're singing praise songs, and \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u2026 and it really affected my life.\u00a0 Then a year-and-a-half later, two years later, all these people had graduated from college; they all get married; they move off.\u00a0 All of a sudden the support team seemed to kind of disintegrate, and I'm standing going, \"Wait, whoa, what happened?\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Before long, Michael W. Smith was learning an important lesson about the power of negative peer pressure, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Then, all of a sudden, a little thing, \"Oh, yeah, come over here, come over here and take a ride with us,\" and \"I'll try it one time, it won't hurt,\" and all I can tell you is I got deceived.\u00a0 The Lord said if there's a favorite name you can have for Satan, he is the great deceiver, and I got deceived and, all of a sudden, I found myself in this pit where I couldn't get out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0This is FamilyLife Today for Wednesday, February 15th.\u00a0 Our host is the president of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine and today Michael W. Smith tells us about his personal experience with the God of the Second Chance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0And welcome to FamilyLife Today, thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition.\u00a0 You would have known, if I hadn't mentioned it, that that was Michael W. Smith, wouldn't you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0I would have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0A distinctive voice, whether he's singing or speaking and, of course, this week everybody is noticing that he's now a movie star.\u00a0 Michael has moved up onto your local Cineplex screen in a new movie that is opening this weekend that's called \"The Second Chance.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0You know, we always delight in a great story that honors God, and Michael W. Smith's life has done that \u2013 most of it.\u00a0 What many of our listeners perhaps don't know about him is that in addition to the 25 records that were number one, the 10 Golds, the five Platinums, and more than 7 million records sold is that he went through a period in his adolescence when he rebelled, he became a prodigal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I was traveling when he stopped by the offices here, and you sit down with him in a studio and let the tape roll as we took a slice out of Michael W. Smith's life, and I think you, as a listener, are going to really enjoy getting to know this great entertainer who is about to become a movie star in an up close and personal way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Describe for me the home in which you grew up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0A great home.\u00a0 My mom and dad did a lot of serving, as they still do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Your mom was a caterer, and she still cooks for some things for family affairs, but also when you get a group together, she'll still cater the meal, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Especially when the band, we all go into rehearsals, production doesn't come up, the lights don't come up, all the band wants to know \u2013 when is mom coming with the homemade rolls?\u00a0 She's terrific \u2013 my dad as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0What was his influence on your life?\u00a0 If you had to look back and say, \"Here is how he marked me as a young man growing up?\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0You know, just the way he loved my mom.\u00a0 You got the sense that no matter what came his way, I knew deep down inside, my dad would never leave my mom, he'll never leave this family.\u00a0 He made a commitment, and he was a hard worker.\u00a0 He worked at an oil refinery, Ashland Oil.\u00a0 He worked swing shift all his life.\u00a0 If don't know what that is, days one week, evenings the next midnight.\u00a0 He coached me in every league that I was ever in baseball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0What did you play?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I played shortstop.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Yeah, were you any good?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I was a pretty good baseball player?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Were you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0That's what I wanted to do, growing up, I wanted to play for the Cincinnati Reds.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Played high school ball?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0At 15 I didn't make the All-Stars.\u00a0 That's when it all changed for me.\u00a0 I thought, \"You know, I think music might be my destiny.\"\u00a0 And knew deep down inside that God had somehow had a call on my life.\u00a0 I couldn't understand it, and I didn't even know how to explain it, but I just knew \u2013 I even walked down the aisle \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah, I became a Christian when I was 10, walked down the aisle then, never forget it \u2013 then gave my heart to Christ, and then at 15 I walked back down.\u00a0 It's the only two times I ever walked down the aisle at my church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0And at 10, what do you remember about what it was that stirred your heart that day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I just knew that I would never make it throughout my life if I don't have the Lord in my life.\u00a0 I truly believe what He did for me was really true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0You walked the aisle at 15 a second time, and that was saying, \"My music belongs to you?\"\u00a0 Is that what that was about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah, I just felt like it was a recommitment, but music had something to do with it.\u00a0 Again, like I said earlier, I can't explain it.\u00a0 It was almost like, \"Lord, I'm going to commit my life to you in my service, in whatever that occupation is.\"\u00a0 I thought it would be music.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0How did you wind up in Nashville?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I knew that there were three music capitals of the world, and that was Los Angeles, New York, and Nashville, and I certainly \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0\u2026 didn't want to go to the first two?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I didn't, which I probably belonged in LA, you know, in terms of the music that was going on, because I was a big Toto fan, and all the pop records were made in LA.\u00a0 But I moved to Nashville, because I had a few contacts in Nashville, very few, and it was only a five-and-a-half-hour drive from my hometown in West Virginia.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0And did Mom and Dad say, \"So long, God bless, this is fine with us?\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0They did, but it was hard.\u00a0 Oh, my mom, oh, you know, I was 20 when I left \u2013 I think I was 20 when I finally left home and, you know, I sent resume, and I went and met with this publisher, and he loved my music, he hated my lyrics, but he just thought, \"Man, you've got \u2013 there's something about the way you write music is very, very unique,\" that's what he told me.\u00a0 He says, \"I think you should move.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0So I went back home, and a month later packed up this beat-up Chevrolet.\u00a0 My mom, she couldn't watch me, she just lost it and ran back in the house, and I knew when I got on the freeway, I knew that I would never move back to West Virginia.\u00a0 I just knew it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0As you just had that sense, \"I'll never be back here again,\" was that exciting or frightening or both?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Both.\u00a0 You know, you're going into uncharted territory.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0You're on your own.\u00a0 Did you know anybody in Nashville?\u00a0 Like, was there a place to spend the night when you got there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I moved in with somebody that I knew through another person and was going to go landscape, I was going to be a landscaper, you know, and \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Everybody's got to have a day job.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Everybody's got to have a day job, and then I would write songs on the side.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0What do you think it was that first turned the trajectory of your life so that you were just heading down the wrong road?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Well, I think I was reckless, I think I was unwise, I thought I could play with the fire and not get burned, you know.\u00a0 You need to understand, all growing up I was just on fire \u2013 I was a Jesus freak, I was.\u00a0 I wore a big wood cross around my neck, had a leather Scofield Bible, and all the friends my age were all drinking 12 packs of beer and smoking dope, you know?\u00a0 I was in Bible study six nights.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0And you were staying away from all of that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Staying away from it.\u00a0 All my friends were older.\u00a0 They all were \u2013 me being a sophomore, they're all in college, and I thought that was cool, my hanging out with these older people, and they're all into the Lord and reading the Word, we're singing praise songs, and it really affected my life.\u00a0 Then a year-and-a-half later, two years later, all these people, they graduated from college, they all get married, they move off.\u00a0 All of a sudden, the support team seemed to kind of disintegrate.\u00a0 I'm sitting there going, \"Wait, whoa, what have I got to hang onto?\"\u00a0 And then, all of a sudden, a little thing, \"Oh, yeah, come over here, I'll come over here and take a ride with us,\" and I'll try it one time, it won't hurt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I kind of go, what happened?\u00a0\u00a0 And all I can tell you is I got deceived.\u00a0 The Lord said if there's a favorite name you can have for Satan, he is the great deceiver, and I got deceived and, all of a sudden, I found myself in this pit where I couldn't get out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Were Mom and Dad aware of what was going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah, they were, especially the year after that, they really were aware.\u00a0 I mean, I'd probably know they were probably very aware from day one.\u00a0 They were trying to give me my space, I know they prayed for me big time, and I was confronted a few times by them, but it was never \u2013 it was always in love, you know, and I look back on it and go, \"Wow, what a mom and dad.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0If you found out one of your kids was off in the ditch, would you do what your parents did?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah, definitely.\u00a0 I mean, my parents weren't hands on because I was in Nashville.\u00a0 That's when I had my little nervous breakdown, you know.\u00a0 You know, I'd probably just go love on my kids.\u00a0 If it was Ryan or Tyler, you know, I'd probably \u2013 the last thing I would was chew them out, because I think they know.\u00a0 They know the consequences.\u00a0 They are all, fortunately, are God-followers.\u00a0 It's pretty cool.\u00a0 Some more mature than others, where you see Ryan and Whitney, my 21- and 19-year-old, you sit and read a little bit of what they're journaling, you know, it's mind-boggling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0It's pretty awesome?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Oh, it's like you're sitting there and go \u2013 the whole career could all fall apart, we could go bankrupt, but you know what?\u00a0 I'm a rich man because of what's happening with my kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a03 John 4 says, \"I have no greater joy than this \u2013 to see my children walking in the truth.\"\u00a0 That's true, isn't it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0You came to the end of yourself, you found yourself in the trough with the pigs.\u00a0 You said it was a breakdown?\u00a0 What happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0It was 1979, it was October and, really, throughout that summer of '79, I knew that if I didn't make a change that I was going to potentially die.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I almost had a drug overdose.\u00a0 One time I didn't something really stupid, I thought I was dying.\u00a0 That woke me up.\u00a0 But as much as I tried to get out of the pit, I couldn't get out.\u00a0 I tried.\u00a0 I wanted to, but I couldn't.\u00a0 It was like I was stuck, you know?\u00a0 So I began to pray that God would do whatever He had to do to get my attention \u2013 break my legs, car wreck, just don't kill me, but get my attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0You're asking for the discipline of God \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Because I know if He doesn't \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0\u2026 you're dead \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0\u2026 it could be over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0And did He get your attention?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0How did he do it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0He took my joy away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0What do you mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I became very, very depressed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Which is \u2013 I mean, talk to all my people \u2013 well, the folks I grew up with in West Virginia and who I am in Nashville.\u00a0 I'm, like, \"Hey, what's up,\" you know, it's like, I'm a people person.\u00a0 All of sudden, boy, it all turned, and I know my mom and dad are on their knees.\u00a0 I know they're crying and praying for me every night.\u00a0 They know what's going on, you know, and they're \u2013 what can they do, you know?\u00a0 I'm an adult.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I'll never forget, I was in my kitchen at midnight, and I literally fell to the ground \u2013 I was all by myself \u2013 and I felt like I had a breakdown and for at least two hours, I was curled up like a baby, and just sweating and crying and shaking and it was just the weirdest thing.\u00a0 And I remember at the end of that, 2 or 3:00 in the morning, this calm came over me, and I felt like the presence of God showed up; that God came and stretched His hand, just like that painting, you know, that hand comes down from heaven and just came in through the ceiling of that kitchen and grabbed my hand, and I woke up the next morning, and I haven't been the same since.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0A complete turnaround, I mean, walked away?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I remember I went out and tried to \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0\u2026 tried to get high?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah, and I hated it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0And I thought, \"That's weird.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Yeah [chuckles]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0And then I said, \"God, is that you?\u00a0 Are you really taking my desire away?\u00a0 Oh, God, please take my desire away.\"\u00a0 Then, all of a sudden, I quit doing all those things.\u00a0 It's, like, it didn't bring any peace, and then I also get the sense of going, \"Ooohooo, man, God has rescued me.\u00a0 Boy, does He have a plan for my life.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[music]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I think I was trying to write Christian songs, I don't know, that didn't work too well.\u00a0 And I walk in the next day, and my publishers says, \"Can I see you a moment?\u00a0 I want to talk to you.\"\u00a0 He says, \"Look, this is kind of bizarre.\u00a0 I really want you to stay here and write songs, but there's a group called Higher Ground, they're a Gospel group, and they're looking for a piano player.\u00a0 And my eyes lit up big time, because I knew that was the Lord.\u00a0 Isn't it interesting, the very next day after this breakdown, and I just said, \"I'll take the job, I'll just take it.\"\u00a0 And, for the next nine to 10 months on the road with them, they nurtured me back to health spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Really?\u00a0 You have undoubtedly seen guys involved, either trying to get into Christian music or guys who have gotten into Christian music who have wound up messed up.\u00a0 Have you been able to go to those guys and, with the background you've had, say, \"You've got to get some help, you've got to cry out to the Lord?\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0You've seen it happen?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0Some of them, yeah.\u00a0 You know what? In all that, I mean, you know, the wild thing is every one of us are susceptible of taking the dive.\u00a0 So what you have to do is you have to \u2013 I don't care how much you love God, there's traps out there.\u00a0 So what you have to do is you have to set up parameters and boundaries and support teams at all costs, period \u2013 at all costs.\u00a0 And unfortunately a lot of these young bands, some of these younger artists, they get pushed out there \u2013 I blame a lot of that on the record company.\u00a0 I won't get into all that, you know, we all care about their careers but what about their spiritual life, you know?\u00a0 And we throw them out to the wolves, and there's no pastor out there with them, and then it's just a complete disaster. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0So a lot of times, I've been able to counsel and say, \"Here is what I think you need to do\" in terms of support teams and accountability.\u00a0 And I've, fortunately, had that in my life now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Yeah, what do you do?\u00a0 What do you do?\u00a0 What kind of accountability?\u00a0\u00a0 What measures have you set up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0I have some men in my life that I kind of hold myself accountable to.\u00a0 If they look and think I'm getting a big head and whatever, they'll come up and slap me around \u2013 \"Snap out of it.\"\u00a0 They're not impressed.\u00a0 And then my biggest influence, other than my wife \u2013 she's probably my biggest accountability partner \u2013 probably the one person that's had the most impact on my life is my pastor, Don Finto, and I've walked with Don for \u2013 well, ever since that incident in '79, we've walked 25, 26 years together.\u00a0 So he has the real freedom to speak into my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0As your career has gotten bigger \u2013 three Grammy Awards, 40 Dove Awards, 13 million unit sales \u2013 do the temptations get harder?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMichael:\u00a0You know, I think the temptations are different.\u00a0 For example, the whole movie star, success, selling records, being the king of the hill, I could care less, because I know that stuff doesn't bring you peace.\u00a0 So, from experience, I know what brings true peace, is walking with God and being in His will.\u00a0 That's why I'm always, \"God, don't let me miss it.\u00a0 It's too late to miss it.\"\u00a0 So I'm here for a short time, let me be about Your business and Your business only, because I know that's the bottom line, that's what needs to happen.\u00a0 But all the other temptations like, I mean, it could be, well, you think that \u2013 sometimes you think, oh, everything is cool in terms of other women and all that sort of thing \u2013 I am so in love with my wife, my marriage has never been better.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, you know, you think you've got that old thing locked up, everything is cool, I'm not even tempted, and you think, \"Wow, God, thank you for that,\" and then, all of a sudden, some woman walks by, and you do a double-turn, and you go \"Whoa, wait, God, God,\" you know, and so you just \u2013 you know, you're tempted but what do you do with the temptation, and that's when you don't look back the second time, and you go, \"I'm going to walk straight ahead and keep my eyes straight forward.\"\u00a0 It comes up, and it surprises you, that's the wild thing, and that's Satan, you know, just trying to trap you again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Well, again, that is Michael W. Smith, who becomes a movie star this weekend, and would to God that there would be more movie stars who have that kind of a worldview, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0A family man, how about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0And not only that, but someone who can articulate a story of being redeemed.\u00a0 He went from what could have been the destruction of his life and came to a place where not only has he experienced success but he has found the peace of walking with God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0And just to apply to where families may find themselves today, just a couple of lessons from his life \u2013 friends were powerful in Michael's life.\u00a0 When he lost his Christian friends, he described himself as vulnerable.\u00a0 He lost his support group, and when we observe our teenagers hanging with the wrong crowd \u2013 Barbara and I, when we would do that, if we would see one of our children beginning to drift toward the wrong set of friends as we grew older in raising our children, we gave greater, shall I say, \"reverence\" to the power of those friends for evil in our children's life than we did earlier as we started out raising teenagers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0Well, you kept reinforcing that verse from 1 Corinthians, \"Do not be deceived.\u00a0 Bad company corrupts good morals.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0I'm telling you, that verse is true, and you saw how close Michael's life came to destruction because of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0The second thing that I really leave this story with today in terms of application, is the power of two things \u2013 the power of God in redemption of a human being, the Gospel does change people's lives, and we cannot look at a circumstance in a child's life, in a spouse's life, in a friend's life, and say, \"That's too big for God.\u00a0 He can do it.\u00a0 He's been doing it since the foundation of the earth, and that's what God delights in.\u00a0 And the other thing is not only the power of God but the power of a family.\u00a0 Michael W.
