Barbara Rainey says there\u2019s a way to take the focus on gifts and turn it to a focus on Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>When we give gifts to one another, we are demonstrating that we love one another. The whole reason we give gifts in the first place is because we\u2019re imitating what God did for us. Helping your children see that the gift of Jesus is <em>why<\/em> we give gifts to one another\u2014that adds meaning and depth to the experience of a holiday, in and of itself; but teaching them His names takes it even farther.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, November 27<sup>th<\/sup>. How can we, as parents, make sure that during this Christmas season we, as parents, continue to point our children to what is the main thing? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow can we keep our own hearts there? You know, we\u2019ve talked many times about life messages. You would identify\u2014I don\u2019t know, a half a dozen; maybe more\u2014messages that, over the course of your life, have just been ones you\u2019ve come back to. The importance of the fifth commandment is one of those life messages for you; understanding the fear of God has been a life message for you; the whole issue of isolation in marriage versus oneness in marriage\u2014that\u2019s a life message that\u2019s been carried through the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway for years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Keeping the covenant and your most sacred promise you make to another human being\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014the marriage promise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Your wife has a couple of life messages in her too; doesn\u2019t she?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She does, and she\u2019s really made me listen to them several times over the past 46 years. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, sit back; because you\u2019re going to get to hear them again today!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m kidding! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The whole idea of redeeming holidays really has been a life message for you\u2014for how long; do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You know, that\u2019s a great way to put it. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever thought of it in those terms\u2014in the terms of a life message\u2014but it really is; because I just began to see, when we were raising our kids\u2014and maybe it was when we just had three or four, or maybe it was when we had all six of them\u2014but I just noticed, in my kids\/in our children, that when holidays rolled around, it\u2019s like their little antenna perked up and their hearing perked up\u2014and they went: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cUh-oh, something\u2019s different. Mom\u2019s put up a Christmas tree,\u201d or \u201cSomething\u2019s different. She\u2019s cooking different food for Thanksgiving,\u201d or \u201cSomething\u2019s different. She has these decorations out.\u201d I mean, you know, they just pick up on that kind of stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought: \u201cOh, that\u2019s interesting. They\u2019re noticing that I\u2019m doing different things to make <em>this<\/em> time of year unique and special.\u201d When that kind of made sense to me, I thought: \u201cOkay; this is a teaching opportunity too. This isn\u2019t just, \u2018Okay; let\u2019s make different food because it\u2019s Thanksgiving.\u2019 Maybe they\u2019re more receptive if their little antennas are up. Maybe I can teach them some things about being thankful.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started researching and doing some study to figure out: \u201cWhat can I teach them? How can I teach my kids to be grateful when their little antennae were up and going, \u2018Okay; this is a special time of year\u2019?\u201d\u2014the same with Christmas, and the same with Easter, and the same even with some other opportunities throughout the year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that seed started germinating when I saw my kids\u2019 receptivity to anything that I had to say go up around holidays. I realized that all children are like that, and even adults, for that matter. We celebrate these holidays because there\u2019s something important about them\u2014something meaningful happened \/ something that we should pay attention. So how do we, as moms and dads, teach our kids what that is?\u2014what that meaningful event was?\u2014and \u201cWhy do we celebrate this?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Typically, the first Sunday after Thanksgiving is the start of the Advent season in local churches.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, that\u2019s not the case this year, because we had an early Thanksgiving; so it\u2019s actually this coming Sunday when we will begin the Advent celebration. This is, traditionally, the time when we\u2019re supposed to be re-focusing and getting ready for the celebration of the birth of Christ. Is this something that you gave a lot of focus and attention to you as you were raising your kids?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, to be perfectly honest, it\u2019s something that I <em>tried<\/em> to give attention to; but it was something that I have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014now, as I look back on it\u2014I feel like I was an absolute failure. I didn\u2019t grow up doing an Advent wreath or any kind of Advent thing, so I was trying to do something that was outside of my experience. But I saw other people in the church doing it, and I saw some churches that we attended do the Advent wreath at the front of the church\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Could I make a statement there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It just dawned on me, as I was listening to you: \u201cAdvent is not a candle.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No; of course, it\u2019s not a candle. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s not lighting a candle; no. I just think a lot of people don\u2019t pause and think about: \u201cWhat does the word, \u201cadvent,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, they don\u2019t even <em>know<\/em> what it means.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014what does it mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t know what it meant!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, a candle\u2014you bring up a candle\u2014I\u2019m not thinking, \u201cCandle\u201d; I\u2019m thinking, \u201cCalendar,\u201d because, at our house, we had the Advent calendar. [Laughter] Every day, you\u2019d pop open something\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And we had an Advent calendar too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and there was chocolate underneath, or a little toy, or something underneath; so\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And that\u2014we were successful with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; so you pulled that one off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014we had that out. The reason was because the kids wanted\u2014they fought over whose turn it was to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to open that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right\u2014to do that every day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we had somebody who gave us a calendar that was a felt calendar that had\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; my mother made that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014Oh!\u2014someone\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You don\u2019t remember that; do you? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Hey, Grandma, could I apologize for that? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You better!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Poor memory. She\u2019s celebrating her 92<sup>nd<\/sup> year in life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow; wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What a great gift, though; because it gave the kids something to touch and feel and be a part of at Christmas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right\u2014for the whole month of December.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, the reality is\u2014the songs on the radio, or the commercials that are on TV, or what is in your social media feed now\u2014all of this is talking about \u201cChristmas is coming.\u201d It\u2019s all pointing you toward, \u201cDon\u2019t you want\u2026\u201d and \u201cShouldn\u2019t you buy\u2026\u201d and it\u2019s all consumer-oriented.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So our antennas are up\u2014not just our kids, but our antennas are up. What you\u2019re trying to say is: \u201cOur antennas are up, but let\u2019s tune away from the consumerism. Let\u2019s tune into what this holiday\u2019s supposed to be all about in the first place.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right; exactly. Advent is something that has been practiced in the church for centuries. It was a way to <em>help<\/em> people in the church focus on, as you just said, the birth of Christ as we march our way through the month of December. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember trying to do this\u2014do you remember me trying to do this, Dennis?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And were we successful?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>If we burned two out of the four candles, we were successful. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; well, I don\u2019t know that we ever burned two. [Laughter] We may have burned one\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014but I just felt like a failure; and it never, never worked.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You just wrote a blog post about this; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I did, a couple of weeks ago. I titled it: \u201cI Was an Advent Failure,\u201d because I expected more of myself than I should have. [Laughter] You know, I expected the kids to sit around the table, or the tree, or wherever and to put their hands in their laps and politely listen as Dad read the devotion\u2014whatever it was; I don\u2019t remember\u2014and I lit the candles; and we had cookies afterwards; and we were all happy! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut nobody was happy\u2014nobody wanted to do it\u2014they rolled their eyes. It was like they were practically tapping their toes and saying, \u201cWhen is this going to be over?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If you had a do-over, how would you do it differently?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I have an idea that probably I wouldn\u2019t have been a hundred percent successful with it had I had this at the time; but I think it would have a higher probability of success, because it involved the kids getting into it, just like our Advent calendar. It was successful because our kids were motivated to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Because there\u2019s some mystery involved.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And when kids are motivated, they\u2019re going to help you do it. They\u2019re going to get up in the morning and they\u2019re going to say: \u201cMom, is it Sunday? Can I open the next present?\u201d because they want to be able to do it. If you can provide a way for your kids to be excited about it, that helps you be a success, as a parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, I want to answer the question for some of our listeners, who don\u2019t understand what Advent is. Think of it this way: \u201cIt is the ultimate <em>reveal<\/em> in the history of the universe\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cthe ultimate reveal.\u201d In fact, the first century church used to greet one another with a term that\u2014there\u2019s debate about exactly what the word meant, but the word was <em>Maranatha<\/em>. \u201c<em>Maranatha<\/em>!\u201d\u2014they\u2019d greet one another. <em>Maranatha<\/em> has been said to mean: \u201cHis first coming,\u201d \/ \u201cHe came.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt also represents the promise of His <em>second<\/em> coming; but a third application of that word, <em>Maranatha<\/em>, means that He could come today\u2014so: \u201cWhat kind of life are you living today? Are you anticipating the coming of the Christ as you celebrate the fact that He did come?\u201d He stepped out of heaven onto earth and lived on this planet to declare who God was to a blind, darkened world. He became the Light of the world; He became the Messenger\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and other names that Barbara has tapped into to represent who Christ was in the first Advent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, are you suggesting that parents need to have an Advent present?\u2014instead of Christmas, we need to start doling them out in the weeks leading up to Christmas?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I say: \u201cWhatever works; whatever works.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>What I\u2019m suggesting is\u2014one of the sets of ornaments that we created, two years ago, is called \u201cHis Advent Names.\u201d It\u2019s focusing on the names of Christ that mean He came to earth\u2014that talk about the expression of John 3:16. Everyone knows \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJohn 3:16: \u201cFor God so loved the world that He gave\u201d\u2014the first Christmas gift\u2014\u201cHis only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.\u201d That\u2019s the verse that sums up what Christ did\u2014it sums up His advent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI created a set of four globe-shaped ornaments\u2014and I don\u2019t just mean round\u2014I mean, they look like a globe; so they have the continents on them\u2014and then, on top of the continents, is the name. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are four names. One is \u201c\u2026the Messenger\u201d\u2014Jesus come to bring us the message of salvation. Another one is \u201c\u2026the Word,\u201d which comes from John 1, where Jesus is the Word. The third one is \u201cJesus is the Light,\u201d\u2014the Light of the world; and then the fourth one is: He came as \u201c\u2026the Son.\u201d He is the Son of God, but He came as a baby; He\u2019s male\u2014He was a son to Mary and Joseph. Those four names are a reflection of Jesus\u2019s first advent: when He came in the flesh, and was born in a manger, and grew up in a family, and lived and gave His life for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe idea is to get four lunch sacks\u2014I took four lunch sacks. I got out some glitter and some glue; and I put the numbers \u201c1\u201d, \u201c2\u201d, \u201c3\u201d, and \u201c4\u201d on the outside of [each] lunch sack. You could use crayons\u2014you can do whatever you want to do\u2014but decorate four lunch sacks. Make sure there\u2019s a number on each of the four lunch sacks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, put each one of the four globe ornaments in the four sacks, with some kind of nesting material on the bottom. Then, you open one ornament on each Sunday of Advent; and then, it\u2019s fun for the kids to get to open the ornament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>By the way, these are not sound effects our engineers have added\u2014this is Dennis doing this in the studio.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He\u2019s actually\u2014yes; he\u2019s opening bag number 1.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s a black and white globe with Jesus\u2019s name: \u201cHe is the Light of the world\u201d in gold.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; and if you make these little bags\u2014and you put some kind of shredded paper, or raffia, or some kind of something\u2014it sort of, symbolically, represents Jesus in the manger. We think of Jesus in a manger full of hay\u2014well, this isn\u2019t really hay\u2014but it\u2019s His name: \u201c\u2026the Light\u201d of the world. Jesus was the Light of the world; and here He is, laying on this bed of hay, and we take Him out, as a family, and we say, \u201cWhat is His name?\u201d The child reads, \u201cJesus is the Light of the world.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the backside of the ornament, it has that verse. You have your child read that verse, and another child could read the story; so you keep more than one engaged if you have one that can read. It just gives you, as a family, an opportunity\u2014as we\u2019ve been saying\u2014to focus on who Jesus is and why He came at Christmas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, I\u2019m thinking back to my Christmases as a kid. If you were to ask me: \u201cWhat was Christmas all about?\u201d the answer was: \u201cWhat I got!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Oh, a hundred percent\u2014that would have been my answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was about my new bike\u2014\u201cI got a bike on Christmas!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It was about the presents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m sure there was some mild awareness of the fact that it was about Jesus, but the heart of the holiday was how you score. Now, you\u2019re not suggesting: \u201cEliminate presents,\u201d and \u201cTake away the giving out of Christmas\u201d; but at the end of the day, you want the kids to go: \u201cI know <em>why<\/em> we gave presents to one another.\u201d It wasn\u2019t just so that we could have a haul and \u201cIt could be all about me and what I got.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right; and that\u2019s why this particular set of ornaments is so meaningful at Christmas, because it\u2019s based on the verse that we just quoted a minute ago\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJohn 3:16: \u201cFor God so loved the world that He\u201d\u2014did what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He gave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He <em>gave<\/em>\u2014God demonstrated to us that His love was evidenced in His gift. When we give gifts to one another, we are demonstrating that we love one another. The whole reason we give gifts in the first place is because we\u2019re imitating what God did for us. Helping your children see that the gift of Jesus is <em>why<\/em> we give gifts to one another\u2014that adds meaning and depth to the experience of a holiday, in and of itself; but teaching them His names takes it even farther.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And because Barbara has emphasized the names of Christ, I\u2019m now kind of acutely aware of these names. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe concept of Him being light took on fresh meaning when I read a little piece written by Tim Keller, from a book he has called <em>Hidden Christmas<\/em>. By the way, I\u2019d recommend this to our listeners\u2014it\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> book. Listen to what he says about Jesus being the Light\u2014he said, \u201cWhen Jesus died on the cross, darkness fell on the land \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Matthew 27:45).\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; in the middle of the day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In the middle of the day. \u201cWhen the Light died, it was dark.\u201d He goes on: \u201cThe Light of the world descended into darkness in order to bring us into God\u2019s beautiful light (1 Peter 2:9). The promises of Christmas cannot be discerned unless you first admit you can\u2019t save yourself, or even know yourself, without the light of His unmerited grace in your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is the foundational truth from which we can proceed to learn the hidden meanings of Christmas.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if Barbara hadn\u2019t created this, I don\u2019t know that it would have hit me about Jesus being the Light and that the Light came and manifested Himself at Christmas\u2014but the Light went out on Crucifixion Day\u2014but it came back <em>on<\/em> when He defeated death and offers us eternal life. Honestly, these globes\/these ornaments are a great way to share the gospel\u2014how a child can know God and that he needs a Savior. In fact, you and I have the mutual friend, Jim, who was going through these ornaments. Do you remember what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>They were reading one of the stories, and his son asked a question about why Jesus had to die or something about His name\u2014I can\u2019t remember exactly what it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was an opportunity for this dad to explain the gospel to his son, who was only about five at the time, or maybe six. His son said, \u201cI want to receive Christ.\u201d The lights came on in his life that Christmas as a result of reading about this particular name of the Jesus that they were talking about, as a family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The Apostle John does not give us a story-based account of the birth of Jesus\u2014Matthew and Luke do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But John gives us more of a theological understanding of the birth of Jesus. He\u2019s the one who says, \u201cThe true light which gives light to everyone was coming into the world.\u201d So, here, we\u2019re saying, \u201cIn a dark world,\u201d\u2014and let\u2019s face it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s a dark world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014we look around at the world we\u2019re in today, and we feel the oppressiveness of the darkness of the world around us. The solution to the darkness is light, and Jesus is the true Light that is coming into the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe solution to the darkness we\u2019re experiencing in our world today is for light to come and to bring redemption, and to bring hope, and to bring transformation so that our sin is dealt with, and done away, and so that what blooms in us is light\u2014\u201cHe is the light that enlightens every man,\u201d the Bible says.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, that\u2019s just one of the four names of Jesus that\u2019s in this Advent series; but I think even kids can understand: \u201cYou\u2019re afraid of the dark. You don\u2019t like it when the lights go out\u2014you feel scared; you feel anxious. Jesus is the Light that comes in and takes that away from you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And I think it\u2019s important to understand that Jesus is the Light for our families, too; because a lot of us feel pockets of darkness in our relationship with our families. We, typically, think of Christmas as when everybody\u2019s happy; and everybody gets along; and it\u2019s wonderful. Well, it\u2019s <em>not<\/em> wonderful\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I mean, most of the time, we still have arguing; we still have sibling rivalry. We have kids that are disappointed that they didn\u2019t get what they wanted; parents get in a fight over something. I mean, it\u2019s not just the world that\u2019s dark\u2014our families are dark, and our hearts are dark. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHelping your children understand that they need redemption \/ they need forgiveness; Mommy and Daddy need redemption \/\u00a0 we need forgiveness\u2014we need to practice this in our home, because the darkness has invaded all of us. The only solution is the light of Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I read, a number of years ago, about experimentation that was done, where humans, who signed up for this experiment, were put in rooms of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014total darkness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014pitch darkness; right. The question was: \u201cHow long\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014\u201ccould they stay?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201ccould they stay in that room without it starting to have some psychological impact?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, you stop and imagine\u2014if you were in a room of total darkness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you know, in the bedroom, your eyes eventually get\u2014but this is a room, where that never happens. After a period of time, you\u2019d become disoriented\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I wouldn\u2019t like it\u2014I can tell you that! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, they found that some people could go maybe two days before it started to have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Really?\u2014two days?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; I mean, these were people who were geared up for it. They were kind of prepared, and they\u2019d put their game face on. But two days of total darkness, and it\u2019s starting to have an impact on your soul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we\u2019re in a world of darkness\u2014people are lost in the darkness of their own sin. Jesus is the Light of the world, who comes into the world at Christmas. The whole reason we give gifts in the first place is because we\u2019re imitating what God did for us. You know, we\u2019ve talked many times about life messages. You would identify\u2014I don\u2019t know, a half a dozen; maybe more\u2014messages that, over the course of your life, have just been ones you\u2019ve come back to. The importance of the fifth commandment is one of those life messages for you; understanding the fear of God has been a life message for you; the whole issue of isolation in marriage versus oneness in marriage\u2014that\u2019s a life message that\u2019s been carried through the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway for years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Keeping the covenant and your most sacred promise you make to another human being\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014the marriage promise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Your wife has a couple of life messages in her too; doesn\u2019t she?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She does, and she\u2019s really made me listen to them several times over the past 46 years. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The whole idea of redeeming holidays really has been a life message for you\u2014for how long; do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You know, that\u2019s a great way to put it. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever thought of it in those terms\u2014in the terms of a life message\u2014but it really is; because I just began to see, when we were raising our kids\u2014and maybe it was when we just had three or four, or maybe it was when we had all six of them\u2014but I just noticed, in my kids\/in our children, that when holidays rolled around, it\u2019s like their little antenna perked up and their hearing perked up\u2014and they went: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cUh-oh, something\u2019s different. Mom\u2019s put up a Christmas tree,\u201d or \u201cSomething\u2019s different. She\u2019s cooking different food for Thanksgiving,\u201d or \u201cSomething\u2019s different. She has these decorations out.\u201d I mean, you know, they just pick up on that kind of stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought: \u201cOh, that\u2019s interesting. They\u2019re noticing that I\u2019m doing different things to make <em>this<\/em> time of year unique and special.\u201d When that kind of made sense to me, I thought: \u201cOkay; this is a teaching opportunity too. This isn\u2019t just, \u2018Okay; let\u2019s make different food because it\u2019s Thanksgiving.\u2019 Maybe they\u2019re more receptive if their little antennas are up. Maybe I can teach them some things about being thankful.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started researching and doing some study to figure out: \u201cWhat can I teach them? How can I teach my kids to be grateful when their little antennae were up and going, \u2018Okay; this is a special time of year\u2019?\u201d\u2014the same with Christmas, and the same with Easter, and the same even with some other opportunities throughout the year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that seed started germinating when I saw my kids\u2019 receptivity to anything that I had to say go up around holidays. I realized that all children are like that, and even adults, for that matter. We celebrate these holidays because there\u2019s something important about them\u2014something meaningful happened \/ something that we should pay attention. So how do we, as moms and dads, teach our kids what that is?\u2014what that meaningful event was?\u2014and \u201cWhy do we celebrate this?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Typically, the first Sunday after Thanksgiving is the start of the Advent season in local churches.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, that\u2019s not the case this year, because we had an early Thanksgiving; so it\u2019s actually this coming Sunday when we will begin the Advent celebration. This is, traditionally, the time when we\u2019re supposed to be re-focusing and getting ready for the celebration of the birth of Christ. Is this something that you gave a lot of focus and attention to you as you were raising your kids?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, to be perfectly honest, it\u2019s something that I <em>tried<\/em> to give attention to; but it was something that I have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014now, as I look back on it\u2014I feel like I was an absolute failure. I didn\u2019t grow up doing an Advent wreath or any kind of Advent thing, so I was trying to do something that was outside of my experience. But I saw other people in the church doing it, and I saw some churches that we attended do the Advent wreath at the front of the church\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Could I make a statement there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It just dawned on me, as I was listening to you: \u201cAdvent is not a candle.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No; of course, it\u2019s not a candle. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s not lighting a candle; no. I just think a lot of people don\u2019t pause and think about: \u201cWhat does the word, \u201cadvent,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, they don\u2019t even <em>know<\/em> what it means.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014what does it mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t know what it meant!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, a candle\u2014you bring up a candle\u2014I\u2019m not thinking, \u201cCandle\u201d; I\u2019m thinking, \u201cCalendar,\u201d because, at our house, we had the Advent calendar. [Laughter] Every day, you\u2019d pop open something\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And we had an Advent calendar too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and there was chocolate underneath, or a little toy, or something underneath; so\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And that\u2014we were successful with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; so you pulled that one off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014we had that out. The reason was because the kids wanted\u2014they fought over whose turn it was to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to open that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right\u2014to do that every day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we had somebody who gave us a calendar that was a felt calendar that had\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; my mother made that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014Oh!\u2014someone\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You don\u2019t remember that; do you? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Hey, Grandma, could I apologize for that? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You better!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Poor memory. She\u2019s celebrating her 92<sup>nd<\/sup> year in life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow; wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What a great gift, though; because it gave the kids something to touch and feel and be a part of at Christmas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right\u2014for the whole month of December.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, the reality is\u2014the songs on the radio, or the commercials that are on TV, or what is in your social media feed now\u2014all of this is talking about \u201cChristmas is coming.\u201d It\u2019s all pointing you toward, \u201cDon\u2019t you want\u2026\u201d and \u201cShouldn\u2019t you buy\u2026\u201d and it\u2019s all consumer-oriented.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So our antennas are up\u2014not just our kids, but our antennas are up. What you\u2019re trying to say is: \u201cOur antennas are up, but let\u2019s tune away from the consumerism. Let\u2019s tune into what this holiday\u2019s supposed to be all about in the first place.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right; exactly. Advent is something that has been practiced in the church for centuries. It was a way to <em>help<\/em> people in the church focus on, as you just said, the birth of Christ as we march our way through the month of December. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember trying to do this\u2014do you remember me trying to do this, Dennis?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And were we successful?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>If we burned two out of the four candles, we were successful. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; well, I don\u2019t know that we ever burned two. [Laughter] We may have burned one\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014but I just felt like a failure; and it never, never worked.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You just wrote a blog post about this; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I did, a couple of weeks ago. I titled it: \u201cI Was an Advent Failure,\u201d because I expected more of myself than I should have. [Laughter] You know, I expected the kids to sit around the table, or the tree, or wherever and to put their hands in their laps and politely listen as Dad read the devotion\u2014whatever it was; I don\u2019t remember\u2014and I lit the candles; and we had cookies afterwards; and we were all happy! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut nobody was happy\u2014nobody wanted to do it\u2014they rolled their eyes. It was like they were practically tapping their toes and saying, \u201cWhen is this going to be over?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If you had a do-over, how would you do it differently?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I have an idea that probably I wouldn\u2019t have been a hundred percent successful with it had I had this at the time; but I think it would have a higher probability of success, because it involved the kids getting into it, just like our Advent calendar. It was successful because our kids were motivated to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Because there\u2019s some mystery involved.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And when kids are motivated, they\u2019re going to help you do it. They\u2019re going to get up in the morning and they\u2019re going to say: \u201cMom, is it Sunday? Can I open the next present?\u201d because they want to be able to do it. If you can provide a way for your kids to be excited about it, that helps you be a success, as a parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, I want to answer the question for some of our listeners, who don\u2019t understand what Advent is. Think of it this way: \u201cIt is the ultimate <em>reveal<\/em> in the history of the universe\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cthe ultimate reveal.\u201d In fact, the first century church used to greet one another with a term that\u2014there\u2019s debate about exactly what the word meant, but the word was <em>Maranatha<\/em>. \u201c<em>Maranatha<\/em>!\u201d\u2014they\u2019d greet one another. <em>Maranatha<\/em> has been said to mean: \u201cHis first coming,\u201d \/ \u201cHe came.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt also represents the promise of His <em>second<\/em> coming; but a third application of that word, <em>Maranatha<\/em>, means that He could come today\u2014so: \u201cWhat kind of life are you living today? Are you anticipating the coming of the Christ as you celebrate the fact that He did come?\u201d He stepped out of heaven onto earth and lived on this planet to declare who God was to a blind, darkened world. He became the Light of the world; He became the Messenger\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and other names that Barbara has tapped into to represent who Christ was in the first Advent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, are you suggesting that parents need to have an Advent present?\u2014instead of Christmas, we need to start doling them out in the weeks leading up to Christmas?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I say: \u201cWhatever works; whatever works.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>What I\u2019m suggesting is\u2014one of the sets of ornaments that we created, two years ago, is called \u201cHis Advent Names.\u201d It\u2019s focusing on the names of Christ that mean He came to earth\u2014that talk about the expression of John 3:16. Everyone knows \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJohn 3:16: \u201cFor God so loved the world that He gave\u201d\u2014the first Christmas gift\u2014\u201cHis only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.\u201d That\u2019s the verse that sums up what Christ did\u2014it sums up His advent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI created a set of four globe-shaped ornaments\u2014and I don\u2019t just mean round\u2014I mean, they look like a globe; so they have the continents on them\u2014and then, on top of the continents, is the name. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are four names. One is \u201c\u2026the Messenger\u201d\u2014Jesus come to bring us the message of salvation. Another one is \u201c\u2026the Word,\u201d which comes from John 1, where Jesus is the Word. The third one is \u201cJesus is the Light,\u201d\u2014the Light of the world; and then the fourth one is: He came as \u201c\u2026the Son.\u201d He is the Son of God, but He came as a baby; He\u2019s male\u2014He was a son to Mary and Joseph. Those four names are a reflection of Jesus\u2019s first advent: when He came in the flesh, and was born in a manger, and grew up in a family, and lived and gave His life for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe idea is to get four lunch sacks\u2014I took four lunch sacks. I got out some glitter and some glue; and I put the numbers \u201c1\u201d, \u201c2\u201d, \u201c3\u201d, and \u201c4\u201d on the outside of [each] lunch sack. You could use crayons\u2014you can do whatever you want to do\u2014but decorate four lunch sacks. Make sure there\u2019s a number on each of the four lunch sacks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, put each one of the four globe ornaments in the four sacks, with some kind of nesting material on the bottom. Then, you open one ornament on each Sunday of Advent; and then, it\u2019s fun for the kids to get to open the ornament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>By the way, these are not sound effects our engineers have added\u2014this is Dennis doing this in the studio.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He\u2019s actually\u2014yes; he\u2019s opening bag number 1.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s a black and white globe with Jesus\u2019s name: \u201cHe is the Light of the world\u201d in gold.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; and if you make these little bags\u2014and you put some kind of shredded paper, or raffia, or some kind of something\u2014it sort of, symbolically, represents Jesus in the manger. We think of Jesus in a manger full of hay\u2014well, this isn\u2019t really hay\u2014but it\u2019s His name: \u201c\u2026the Light\u201d of the world. Jesus was the Light of the world; and here He is, laying on this bed of hay, and we take Him out, as a family, and we say, \u201cWhat is His name?\u201d The child reads, \u201cJesus is the Light of the world.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the backside of the ornament, it has that verse. You have your child read that verse, and another child could read the story; so you keep more than one engaged if you have one that can read. It just gives you, as a family, an opportunity\u2014as we\u2019ve been saying\u2014to focus on who Jesus is and why He came at Christmas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, I\u2019m thinking back to my Christmases as a kid. If you were to ask me: \u201cWhat was Christmas all about?\u201d the answer was: \u201cWhat I got!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Oh, a hundred percent\u2014that would have been my answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was about my new bike\u2014\u201cI got a bike on Christmas!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It was about the presents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m sure there was some mild awareness of the fact that it was about Jesus, but the heart of the holiday was how you score. Now, you\u2019re not suggesting: \u201cEliminate presents,\u201d and \u201cTake away the giving out of Christmas\u201d; but at the end of the day, you want the kids to go: \u201cI know <em>why<\/em> we gave presents to one another.\u201d It wasn\u2019t just so that we could have a haul and \u201cIt could be all about me and what I got.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right; and that\u2019s why this particular set of ornaments is so meaningful at Christmas, because it\u2019s based on the verse that we just quoted a minute ago\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJohn 3:16: \u201cFor God so loved the world that He\u201d\u2014did what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He gave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He <em>gave<\/em>\u2014God demonstrated to us that His love was evidenced in His gift. When we give gifts to one another, we are demonstrating that we love one another. The whole reason we give gifts in the first place is because we\u2019re imitating what God did for us. Helping your children see that the gift of Jesus is <em>why<\/em> we give gifts to one another\u2014that adds meaning and depth to the experience of a holiday, in and of itself; but teaching them His names takes it even farther.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And because Barbara has emphasized the names of Christ, I\u2019m now kind of acutely aware of these names. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe concept of Him being light took on fresh meaning when I read a little piece written by Tim Keller, from a book he has called <em>Hidden Christmas<\/em>. By the way, I\u2019d recommend this to our listeners\u2014it\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> book. Listen to what he says about Jesus being the Light\u2014he said, \u201cWhen Jesus died on the cross, darkness fell on the land \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Matthew 27:45).\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; in the middle of the day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In the middle of the day. \u201cWhen the Light died, it was dark.\u201d He goes on: \u201cThe Light of the world descended into darkness in order to bring us into God\u2019s beautiful light (1 Peter 2:9). The promises of Christmas cannot be discerned unless you first admit you can\u2019t save yourself, or even know yourself, without the light of His unmerited grace in your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is the foundational truth from which we can proceed to learn the hidden meanings of Christmas.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if Barbara hadn\u2019t created this, I don\u2019t know that it would have hit me about Jesus being the Light and that the Light came and manifested Himself at Christmas\u2014but the Light went out on Crucifixion Day\u2014but it came back <em>on<\/em> when He defeated death and offers us eternal life. Honestly, these globes\/these ornaments are a great way to share the gospel\u2014how a child can know God and that he needs a Savior. In fact, you and I have the mutual friend, Jim, who was going through these ornaments. Do you remember what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>They were reading one of the stories, and his son asked a question about why Jesus had to die or something about His name\u2014I can\u2019t remember exactly what it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was an opportunity for this dad to explain the gospel to his son, who was only about five at the time, or maybe six. His son said, \u201cI want to receive Christ.\u201d The lights came on in his life that Christmas as a result of reading about this particular name of the Jesus that they were talking about, as a family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The Apostle John does not give us a story-based account of the birth of Jesus\u2014Matthew and Luke do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But John gives us more of a theological understanding of the birth of Jesus. He\u2019s the one who says, \u201cThe true light which gives light to everyone was coming into the world.\u201d So, here, we\u2019re saying, \u201cIn a dark world,\u201d\u2014and let\u2019s face it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s a dark world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014we look around at the world we\u2019re in today, and we feel the oppressiveness of the darkness of the world around us. The solution to the darkness is light, and Jesus is the true Light that is coming into the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe solution to the darkness we\u2019re experiencing in our world today is for light to come and to bring redemption, and to bring hope, and to bring transformation so that our sin is dealt with, and done away, and so that what blooms in us is light\u2014\u201cHe is the light that enlightens every man,\u201d the Bible says.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Again, that\u2019s just one of the four names of Jesus that\u2019s in this Advent series; but I think even kids can understand: \u201cYou\u2019re afraid of the dark. You don\u2019t like it when the lights go out\u2014you feel scared; you feel anxious. Jesus is the Light that comes in and takes that away from you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And I think it\u2019s important to understand that Jesus is the Light for our families, too; because a lot of us feel pockets of darkness in our relationship with our families. We, typically, think of Christmas as when everybody\u2019s happy; and everybody gets along; and it\u2019s wonderful. Well, it\u2019s <em>not<\/em> wonderful\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I mean, most of the time, we still have arguing; we still have sibling rivalry. We have kids that are disappointed that they didn\u2019t get what they wanted; parents get in a fight over something. I mean, it\u2019s not just the world that\u2019s dark\u2014our families are dark, and our hearts are dark. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHelping your children understand that they need redemption \/ they need forgiveness; Mommy and Daddy need redemption \/\u00a0 we need forgiveness\u2014we need to practice this in our home, because the darkness has invaded all of us. The only solution is the light of Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I read, a number of years ago, about experimentation that was done, where humans, who signed up for this experiment, were put in rooms of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014total darkness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014pitch darkness; right. The question was: \u201cHow long\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014\u201ccould they stay?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201ccould they stay in that room without it starting to have some psychological impact?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, you stop and imagine\u2014if you were in a room of total darkness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you know, in the bedroom, your eyes eventually get\u2014but this is a room, where that never happens. After a period of time, you\u2019d become disoriented\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I wouldn\u2019t like it\u2014I can tell you that! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, they found that some people could go maybe two days before it started to have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Really?\u2014two days?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; I mean, these were people who were geared up for it. They were kind of prepared, and they\u2019d put their game face on. But two days of total darkness, and it\u2019s starting to have an impact on your soul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we\u2019re in a world of darkness\u2014people are lost in the darkness of their own sin. Jesus is the Light of the world, who comes into the world at Christmas.
