I wanted to be able to interact with them. I wanted to be able to, for instance, have ornaments on our tree that were about Jesus\u2014I didn\u2019t want just snowmen, and reindeer, and Santas, and all of those things. I wanted Christmas to be about Jesus; Easter to be about Jesus; Thanksgiving to be about giving thanks and gratitude, because the whole Bible is about being thankful and being grateful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, November 26<sup>th<\/sup>. So as we enter into the Christmas season, are you ready to have conversations with <em>your<\/em> kids about the spiritual importance of this holiday? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe want to help you do that today. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob, have you ever had a good story ruined by an eyewitness? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I think he probably has, because he\u2019s probably had <em>you<\/em> ruin his story\u2014and vice versa. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Ruined a <em>number<\/em> of them! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Vice versa; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob has corrected me many times but not as many as my wife\u2014my lovely wife, who I love and appreciate\u2014but it\u2019s like, \u201cThere you have it\u2014another great illustration ruined by an eyewitness!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I remember the first time both of us heard anybody say that\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it was our friend, Howard Hendricks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Howard Hendricks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He was telling some story about going fishing with <em>you<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; he said he only caught one. I just stopped him in the middle of his message\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He\u2019s talking to a couple hundred people; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Three or four hundred people\u2014and I said: \u201cThat isn\u2019t right, Prof! You caught <em>two<\/em>!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe stopped [imitating Howard\u2019s voice]: \u201cWell, there you have it. Another great illustration ruined by an eyewitness.\u201d The place busted into laughter; so yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, this\u2014what we\u2019re talking about today is really\u2014we just have different perceptions of reality\u2014how it got started. [Laughter] We were empty-nesters. Barbara and I\u2014who joins us on the broadcast. We haven\u2019t <em>formally<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014introduced you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I haven\u2019t been, but I\u2019ve made my voice known. [Laughter] So anyway,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; you have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014here I am. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your presence is noted. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We went about a hundred miles north of here, and we had a four-day planning weekend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> This was a getaway for the two of you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> After the kids had left\u2014empty-nest recalibration. My goal in that time was to get a couple of days for her\u2014and her horizons, and her future, and maximize who she is and who she was\u2014and a couple of days for me so I\u2019d kind of be thinking about where I was headed too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I like to say, we really never got to talk about <em>me<\/em>\u2014we did talk some about what I was going to do on the horizon. Barbara has corrected me, over the years, on multiple occasions\u2014she\u2019s said, \u201cYou said that we didn\u2019t talk about you at <em>all<\/em>, and we did.\u201d [Laughter] The reality is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, it makes a much better story; so, for a long time, I didn\u2019t correct you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was it 50\/50? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t\u2014no; I don\u2019t think it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was it 70\/30? How much time did Dennis get in this planning retreat? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes?\u2014how about that, Barbara? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I guess\u2014I guess maybe it was closer to 50\/50. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Really?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; so I think it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh my! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014because we had these poster boards that we\u2014and for <em>years<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh my! Then, I\u2019ve been lying all these years; huh? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> For years, I had the poster boards\u2014where we wrote down things that he wanted to write or speak on or do, and things that we wanted to do together, and things that I wanted to do. I had those poster boards for a <em>long<\/em> time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I should have kept them for evidence. I got rid of them one day when I was purging all the junk, so I don\u2019t have any proof anymore; but my memory tells that me it was closer to 50\/50. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your recollection is not a 50\/50? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No; but you know what? Barbara\u2019s right. [Laughter] Forty-six years of marriage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014has taught me: \u201cYou know, you are right, Sweetheart.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> For those of you listening to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, this is an important marriage principle to keep\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in mind that Dennis has just illustrated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are two important principles here. Number one is defer to your spouse if at all possible. [Laughter] Number two\u2014to the men: You are responsible to nourish and cherish, which means you are to cause your wife to grow spiritually\u2014to nourish that and cherish her\u2014make her feel valued. A part of that, I think, is helping her, as you begin to release your arrows into adulthood\u2014is helping her understand: \u201cWhat\u2019s her calling? What\u2019s her mission beyond the nest?\u201d because when the nest empties out, you\u2019ve got to have a purpose\u2014you have to have a mission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This planning retreat that you took had that in mind. You were wanting to figure out: \u201cHow can I help you thrive in this next season \/ this next chapter of life?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat really set a course for the two of you; didn\u2019t it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; it really did. It wasn\u2019t that that weekend\u2014we made all our decisions, and they were final once and forevermore. It was more\u2014it was the beginning of a long conversation that went on for the next, probably, ten or fifteen years\u2014where we talked about what we wanted to do, and what we wanted to become, and what gifts and talents that we both felt like we had that hadn\u2019t had the opportunity to be developed and to grow in the previous season of our life. Now, in this new season, where we had more margin, we might be able to actually develop some of those and explore some new things together. So it wasn\u2019t a one weekend and we had it all solved. It was the beginning of a long conversation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But it was something that I felt like germinated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I felt like we created the atmosphere of a planning getaway, and Barbara shared her heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s a very gifted woman\u2014she could do a lot of things. She\u2019s extremely gifted at Bible study\u2014and seeing the needs in people and delivering the Word in practical ways to help them and their families grow spiritual\u2014but secondly, she\u2019s an artist. That came out clearly\u2014we kind of merged those two together. What was germinated was what has been called, now, Ever Thine Home International<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. About seven years ago, I started dabbling in creating a few things that I always wished I had; because this whole thing began when we were raising kids. I was looking for ways to help my children understand why Jesus came at Christmas: \u201cWhy did He have to be born? Why did He choose to be born? Why did He come?\u201d Then, again, at Easter, \u201cWhy did Jesus choose to die on the cross? What did that mean? How do I communicate these <em>huge<\/em> eternal incomprehensible truths to my children?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> These are the cornerstones of the gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Absolutely! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I wanted to be able to talk to my kids about it, and I didn\u2019t know how to talk to my kids about it other than reading a few storybooks that we had. I wanted <em>more<\/em> than that\u2014I wanted more than just a few stories we read at bedtime. I wanted to be able to interact with them. I wanted to be able to, for instance, have ornaments on our tree that were about Jesus\u2014I didn\u2019t want just snowmen, and reindeer, and Santas, and all of those things. I wanted Christmas to be about Jesus; Easter to be about Jesus; Thanksgiving to be about giving thanks and gratitude, because the whole Bible is about being thankful and being grateful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeven years ago, I began to dabble in designing and creating some expressions of those desires that I had when I was a mom. My first set of ornaments we debuted at Christmas in 2012 called \u201cHis Christmas Names.\u201d They are the names of Jesus from the Book of Isaiah, the Book of Matthew, and the Book of Luke. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeople responded way more than we ever dreamed that they would. It wasn\u2019t just a: \u201cOh, this is nice.\u201d It was \u201cWe sold them all out\u201d-kind of response, which let me know that I wasn\u2019t the only mom on the planet that wanted to have something beautiful that was also Christ-focused at Christmas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSince then, we\u2019ve created a bunch of Christmas ornaments. We\u2019ve created a bunch of things for Easter to help families focus on the cross, and on the blood of Christ, and on all of the things that make Easter what it is for our redemption. We\u2019ve got things for Thanksgiving, and we even got some things for throughout the year to help families focus on what is eternal and do it at home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said beautiful and Christ-focused. These are discipleship tools you\u2019ve been creating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; they are\u2014not just something to hang on the wall. That\u2019s a part of what I\u2019ve been really passionate about\u2014is I don\u2019t want to just make something beautiful, or cute, or whatever might be in style to hang on the wall that <em>hints<\/em> at something that might have spiritual meaning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want what I create to have something that goes with it\u2014where you can read a story to your kids that talks about the name, Prince of Peace, and why Jesus is our Prince of Peace; and that talks about the name, Savior, and why Jesus came to be a savior. He came and was born in a manger to <em>die<\/em>. We don\u2019t talk about His death at Christmas\u2014but they\u2019re inseparable\u2014we have to talk about them both. It is a discipleship emphasis in all that I\u2019ve done over these last seven years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And at Christmas, you\u2019ve gone on to create more than two dozen ornaments now; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; I don\u2019t know what the total is, but we\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s over 30 now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Is that right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> We have seven sets. The first three were sets of seven, so we have 21 right off the bat. Then, we\u2019ve got some additional sets; so it\u2019s pushing 30. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, is your tree at home\u2014does it have any Santas or reindeer left? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I don\u2019t put Santas, or reindeer, snowmen, or sleighs, or any of those things on my tree anymore. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, the cool thing is\u2014I was reviewing a number of emails we\u2019ve received over the years around what Barbara\u2019s created. One of them came from Judy Douglass, who is the wife of the President and CEO of, formerly, Campus Crusade for Christ<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014now Cru<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Cru. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She wrote Barbara to tell her\u2014she said, \u201cThe tree at headquarters in Orlando\u201d\u2014which I would imagine would be a sizeable tree\u2014\u201cis now just the names of Christ\u201d\u2014all done by Barbara and Ever Thine Home\u2014because she said, \u201cThey\u2019re beautiful, but they also have a message with them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They make a statement. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They do. And I love what Theresa says\u2014Theresa lives in Boulder; she raised four daughters\u2014she said, \u201cThey\u2019re not only beautiful, but they are engaging.\u201d I think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s a good word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014that\u2019s important, Bob; because I think, as parents, we have to find a way to get our kids\u2019 attention away from these little screens and engage them in a real relationship with you, as a parent; but pass on truth as you have the relationship in place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; Barbara, you said you\u2019d always wished you\u2019d had these when your kids were young. You actually started creating them after you were an empty-nester. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you\u2019ve now seen younger moms, who are grabbing onto these and doing with them what you wished you could have done when your kids were little. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Exactly; exactly. I didn\u2019t have the bandwidth when I was raising our kids. I wanted to\u2014I tried to do a few things\u2014but I just had too many interruptions, which most moms do. To be able to focus on creating them and, also, writing stories that you could read to your kids\u2014I just couldn\u2019t do it when I was raising kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt has been fun to watch these young moms do it, because we\u2019ve seen so many families use these ornaments. They read the stories out loud to their kids before Christmas in the month of December. We\u2019ve seen kids come to Christ; because it opened the door to a conversation about <em>why<\/em> each person needs to, individually, receive Jesus as Savior. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChildren have come to know Christ because of decorating the Christmas tree\u2014well, it seems to me\u2014that\u2019s what it should be about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got a link on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com if listeners want to go and see all of these ornaments\u2014all 30-plus\u2014whatever the number is that you\u2019ve created. They can go and click on the link and get an idea of how they can utilize the names of Christ as a part of their decoration but, also, as a part of their discipleship during the Christmas season. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And this year\u2019s names\u2014I think it\u2019s fun because she has \u201cHis Christmas Names,\u201d \u201cHis Savior Names,\u201d \u201cHis Eternal Names,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cRoyal Names.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014yes; \u201cRoyal Names.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cAdvent Names.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There you go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And \u201cHis Name Among the Nations,\u201d which is \u201cJesus\u201d in five different languages\u2014so ornaments that make your tree international. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And this year\u2019s? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And this year\u2014it\u2019s really <em>fun<\/em> to be doing this program on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> about this year\u2019s ornaments; because this year\u2019s ornaments are called \u201cHis Family Names.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you think about the Bible, what was one of the very first things\u2014and you\u2019ve said this, Dennis, a million times on the broadcast\u2014what\u2019s one of the first things that God created in the first few chapters of Genesis? He created marriage\u2014He called Adam and Eve to get married; and He said: \u201c\u2026reproduce children,\u201d\u2014create a family. At the end of the Bible, it talks about the family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Jesus came to earth, he came to show us the Father. That is very clear in the Book of John\u2014Jesus said, \u201cI came to show the Father,\u201d\u2014so we know of God as our Father; and Jesus told His disciples that He was their brother. He also talked about being our friend, and He talked about being our provider. Jesus is also our teacher\u2014that\u2019s really clear in the New Testament too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are <em>relationship<\/em> names that we\u2019re all very comfortable with, as people\u2014we know families. Moms and dads teach\u2014it says in Proverbs\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it commands mothers and fathers to teach your children. Parents are providers; parents are also teachers. Your children\u2014you want them to be friends with each other. So, the names of the ornaments this year are all family-centric. They are names that we associate with family\u2014with all families\u2014so to understand that Jesus initiated family in the first place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen He was born, He was born into a family. He had a mother and a father, and He had siblings. He\u2014when He went to heaven, He invited us to be a part of His forever family. It\u2019s a <em>relationship<\/em>\u2014the Trinity is a relationship, and we\u2019re invited to participate in that and to be a part of God\u2019s family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis year\u2019s ornaments are cute little chalkboard houses. They say: \u201cJesus is my friend,\u201d \u201c\u2026my provider,\u201d \u201c\u2026my brother,\u201d and \u201c\u2026my teacher.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And call me dense or thick\u2014even though I\u2019m married to this creative, beautiful follower of Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I really had never thought about: \u201cAll these are relational.\u201d Now, a family is about relationships; but you just articulated it and clarified it. I think that\u2019s important, because a family is where a child first finds out who God is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, think about it. Reflect on your own upbringing. Even if you didn\u2019t have godly parents, you <em>learned<\/em> a lot about who God is from imperfect parents. Our first concept of our heavenly Father comes from our earthly fathers. I think what we have here is a great vehicle to start talking to our children about the names of Christ, very practically, within the family setting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I\u2019ve really thought about what Barbara has done, I\u2019ve been amazed at how many different names Christ has in the Bible. How many did you tell me that you found? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, some scholars say as many as 300. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s just more than we can grasp or understand. Even if we saw a list of them, it\u2019s just mind-boggling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo have the names of Jesus\u2014the ones that are the most common \/ the ones that we know the best\u2014to have them in a visual form that you can put on your Christmas tree or even keep out all year\u2014I\u2019m recommending to families that they let their kids hang their favorite one of these little family names in their room all year long to remind them, throughout the school year, that: \u201cJesus is my friend\u201d; \u201cHe\u2019s my teacher\u201d; \u201cHe\u2019s my brother\u201d; because then, that makes us feel the warmth and the love that God has for us when we think about Him in these relational terms that we understand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTaking the names of Jesus\u2014and making them practical, making them visual, and designing them in such a way that it reflects a little bit of what that name is all about\u2014I think that helps us, as people in our finite limitedness, be able to embrace a little bit more of the incomprehensible God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you provide guidance for us. Along with the ornaments\u2014it\u2019s not just \u201cJesus is my friend,\u201d\u2014but\u2014\u201cHere are some thoughts on how we can meditate on that idea.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Really, when you take a concept like \u201cJesus is my friend,\u201d and you stop and you go: \u201cOkay; so what does that mean?\u2014the fact that I\u2019m a friend of God \/ that God is my friend. How am I to understand that? How does that change the way I relate to Jesus\u2014the way I relate to God?\u201d That\u2019s the kind of meditation you want us to be having, not just during the holiday season, but all-year long. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, and one of the things that I\u2019ve said, for years, when I speak to women is that moms need to be theologians; because moms are often the first person that a child asks a question about God\u2014they\u2019ll say: \u201cMommy, why can\u2019t I touch God?\u201d or \u201cWhy can\u2019t I talk to God?\u201d or whatever. Kids are going to ask mommy questions about God. Understanding the names and teaching your child who Jesus is through His various names is teaching them theology. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s just like you said: \u201cWhen we understand that Jesus is our friend, it changes us.\u201d Knowing all of His other names can change us also, so I think it\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> opportunity for moms in particular\u2014but moms and dads\u2014to teach the theology of who Jesus is through using the ornaments. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And she does for us what every parent needs somebody to do, especially during the Christmas season. I remember, as we\u2019d hang all the ornaments on a tree, my margins were razor-thin\u2014I didn\u2019t have much creativity to add to much conversation with my kids. What Barbara has done is\u2014she has created a devotional booklet. In this case, it\u2019s available online. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s a downloadable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s downloadable. To give you an illustration of what she does, here\u2019s the one on \u201cJesus is my brother.\u201d You tell a story about a ten-year-old boy by the name of Jacob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s just a story about a\u2014well, it\u2019s an <em>amazing<\/em> story, actually\u2014but it is a story about a little boy, who was at home in the summer. His little brother was playing around behind him. His little brother\u2014all of a sudden, he noticed his little two-year-old brother was not around; and it got real quiet. He thought, \u201cWonder where he is?\u201d He got up and noticed that the door to the backyard was open. He went outside and found his brother in the pool\u2014floating in the pool. There was no adult around, close, at the moment. He pulled his brother out and laid him on the concrete around the pool and started pumping on his chest, because he\u2019d seen that on TV. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> He managed to get him to start coughing and choking; and then, you know, an adult came. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt helps kids understand that this is what Jesus did for us\u2014He rescued us. We were lifeless\u2014we were floating on the pool, so to speak\u2014and Jesus came and rescued us. He pulled us out of the pool, because He is our brother. He <em>loves<\/em> us in a way no earthly brother will ever love us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a story that you can read to your kids so that they can identify with\u2014they can go, \u201cOh, wow!\u201d Then, they begin to relate: \u201cOh, Jesus is like that to me. He\u2019s going to be better to me than any brother I actually have,\u201d and \u201cI can follow Him as my brother.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I can tell you from personal experience\u2014Barbara and I needed a story about a brother and, maybe, rescuing a brother because there was a lot of sibling rivalry. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Oh my gosh\u2014it was horrible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There was not rescuing in our house. There was pestering\u2014there was torturing sisters and the other brother. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we\u2019re just talking about getting biblical core values in the family being taught by mom and dad in a practical way and create a discussion, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; yes. You mentioned that the devotional is downloadable. I wanted to be able to interact with them. I wanted to be able to, for instance, have ornaments on our tree that were about Jesus\u2014I didn\u2019t want just snowmen, and reindeer, and Santas, and all of those things. I wanted Christmas to be about Jesus; Easter to be about Jesus; Thanksgiving to be about giving thanks and gratitude, because the whole Bible is about being thankful and being grateful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, November 26<sup>th<\/sup>. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob, have you ever had a good story ruined by an eyewitness? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I think he probably has, because he\u2019s probably had <em>you<\/em> ruin his story\u2014and vice versa. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Ruined a <em>number<\/em> of them! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Vice versa; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob has corrected me many times but not as many as my wife\u2014my lovely wife, who I love and appreciate\u2014but it\u2019s like, \u201cThere you have it\u2014another great illustration ruined by an eyewitness!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I remember the first time both of us heard anybody say that\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it was our friend, Howard Hendricks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Howard Hendricks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He was telling some story about going fishing with <em>you<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; he said he only caught one. I just stopped him in the middle of his message\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He\u2019s talking to a couple hundred people; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Three or four hundred people\u2014and I said: \u201cThat isn\u2019t right, Prof! You caught <em>two<\/em>!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe stopped [imitating Howard\u2019s voice]: \u201cWell, there you have it. Another great illustration ruined by an eyewitness.\u201d The place busted into laughter; so yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, this\u2014what we\u2019re talking about today is really\u2014we just have different perceptions of reality\u2014how it got started. [Laughter] We were empty-nesters. Barbara and I\u2014who joins us on the broadcast. We haven\u2019t <em>formally<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014introduced you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I haven\u2019t been, but I\u2019ve made my voice known. [Laughter] So anyway,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; you have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014here I am. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your presence is noted. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We went about a hundred miles north of here, and we had a four-day planning weekend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> This was a getaway for the two of you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> After the kids had left\u2014empty-nest recalibration. My goal in that time was to get a couple of days for her\u2014and her horizons, and her future, and maximize who she is and who she was\u2014and a couple of days for me so I\u2019d kind of be thinking about where I was headed too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I like to say, we really never got to talk about <em>me<\/em>\u2014we did talk some about what I was going to do on the horizon. Barbara has corrected me, over the years, on multiple occasions\u2014she\u2019s said, \u201cYou said that we didn\u2019t talk about you at <em>all<\/em>, and we did.\u201d [Laughter] The reality is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, it makes a much better story; so, for a long time, I didn\u2019t correct you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was it 50\/50? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t\u2014no; I don\u2019t think it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was it 70\/30? How much time did Dennis get in this planning retreat? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes?\u2014how about that, Barbara? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I guess\u2014I guess maybe it was closer to 50\/50. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Really?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; so I think it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh my! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014because we had these poster boards that we\u2014and for <em>years<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh my! Then, I\u2019ve been lying all these years; huh? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> For years, I had the poster boards\u2014where we wrote down things that he wanted to write or speak on or do, and things that we wanted to do together, and things that I wanted to do. I had those poster boards for a <em>long<\/em> time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I should have kept them for evidence. I got rid of them one day when I was purging all the junk, so I don\u2019t have any proof anymore; but my memory tells that me it was closer to 50\/50. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your recollection is not a 50\/50? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No; but you know what? Barbara\u2019s right. [Laughter] Forty-six years of marriage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014has taught me: \u201cYou know, you are right, Sweetheart.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> For those of you listening to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, this is an important marriage principle to keep\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in mind that Dennis has just illustrated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are two important principles here. Number one is defer to your spouse if at all possible. [Laughter] Number two\u2014to the men: You are responsible to nourish and cherish, which means you are to cause your wife to grow spiritually\u2014to nourish that and cherish her\u2014make her feel valued. A part of that, I think, is helping her, as you begin to release your arrows into adulthood\u2014is helping her understand: \u201cWhat\u2019s her calling? What\u2019s her mission beyond the nest?\u201d because when the nest empties out, you\u2019ve got to have a purpose\u2014you have to have a mission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This planning retreat that you took had that in mind. You were wanting to figure out: \u201cHow can I help you thrive in this next season \/ this next chapter of life?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat really set a course for the two of you; didn\u2019t it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; it really did. It wasn\u2019t that that weekend\u2014we made all our decisions, and they were final once and forevermore. It was more\u2014it was the beginning of a long conversation that went on for the next, probably, ten or fifteen years\u2014where we talked about what we wanted to do, and what we wanted to become, and what gifts and talents that we both felt like we had that hadn\u2019t had the opportunity to be developed and to grow in the previous season of our life. Now, in this new season, where we had more margin, we might be able to actually develop some of those and explore some new things together. So it wasn\u2019t a one weekend and we had it all solved. It was the beginning of a long conversation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But it was something that I felt like germinated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I felt like we created the atmosphere of a planning getaway, and Barbara shared her heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s a very gifted woman\u2014she could do a lot of things. She\u2019s extremely gifted at Bible study\u2014and seeing the needs in people and delivering the Word in practical ways to help them and their families grow spiritual\u2014but secondly, she\u2019s an artist. That came out clearly\u2014we kind of merged those two together. What was germinated was what has been called, now, Ever Thine Home International<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. About seven years ago, I started dabbling in creating a few things that I always wished I had; because this whole thing began when we were raising kids. I was looking for ways to help my children understand why Jesus came at Christmas: \u201cWhy did He have to be born? Why did He choose to be born? Why did He come?\u201d Then, again, at Easter, \u201cWhy did Jesus choose to die on the cross? What did that mean? How do I communicate these <em>huge<\/em> eternal incomprehensible truths to my children?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> These are the cornerstones of the gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Absolutely! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I wanted to be able to talk to my kids about it, and I didn\u2019t know how to talk to my kids about it other than reading a few storybooks that we had. I wanted <em>more<\/em> than that\u2014I wanted more than just a few stories we read at bedtime. I wanted to be able to interact with them. I wanted to be able to, for instance, have ornaments on our tree that were about Jesus\u2014I didn\u2019t want just snowmen, and reindeer, and Santas, and all of those things. I wanted Christmas to be about Jesus; Easter to be about Jesus; Thanksgiving to be about giving thanks and gratitude, because the whole Bible is about being thankful and being grateful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeven years ago, I began to dabble in designing and creating some expressions of those desires that I had when I was a mom. My first set of ornaments we debuted at Christmas in 2012 called \u201cHis Christmas Names.\u201d They are the names of Jesus from the Book of Isaiah, the Book of Matthew, and the Book of Luke. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeople responded way more than we ever dreamed that they would. It wasn\u2019t just a: \u201cOh, this is nice.\u201d It was \u201cWe sold them all out\u201d-kind of response, which let me know that I wasn\u2019t the only mom on the planet that wanted to have something beautiful that was also Christ-focused at Christmas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSince then, we\u2019ve created a bunch of Christmas ornaments. We\u2019ve created a bunch of things for Easter to help families focus on the cross, and on the blood of Christ, and on all of the things that make Easter what it is for our redemption. We\u2019ve got things for Thanksgiving, and we even got some things for throughout the year to help families focus on what is eternal and do it at home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said beautiful and Christ-focused. These are discipleship tools you\u2019ve been creating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; they are\u2014not just something to hang on the wall. That\u2019s a part of what I\u2019ve been really passionate about\u2014is I don\u2019t want to just make something beautiful, or cute, or whatever might be in style to hang on the wall that <em>hints<\/em> at something that might have spiritual meaning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want what I create to have something that goes with it\u2014where you can read a story to your kids that talks about the name, Prince of Peace, and why Jesus is our Prince of Peace; and that talks about the name, Savior, and why Jesus came to be a savior. He came and was born in a manger to <em>die<\/em>. We don\u2019t talk about His death at Christmas\u2014but they\u2019re inseparable\u2014we have to talk about them both. It is a discipleship emphasis in all that I\u2019ve done over these last seven years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And at Christmas, you\u2019ve gone on to create more than two dozen ornaments now; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; I don\u2019t know what the total is, but we\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s over 30 now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Is that right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> We have seven sets. The first three were sets of seven, so we have 21 right off the bat. Then, we\u2019ve got some additional sets; so it\u2019s pushing 30. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, is your tree at home\u2014does it have any Santas or reindeer left? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I don\u2019t put Santas, or reindeer, snowmen, or sleighs, or any of those things on my tree anymore. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, the cool thing is\u2014I was reviewing a number of emails we\u2019ve received over the years around what Barbara\u2019s created. One of them came from Judy Douglass, who is the wife of the President and CEO of, formerly, Campus Crusade for Christ<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014now Cru<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Cru. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She wrote Barbara to tell her\u2014she said, \u201cThe tree at headquarters in Orlando\u201d\u2014which I would imagine would be a sizeable tree\u2014\u201cis now just the names of Christ\u201d\u2014all done by Barbara and Ever Thine Home\u2014because she said, \u201cThey\u2019re beautiful, but they also have a message with them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They make a statement. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They do. And I love what Theresa says\u2014Theresa lives in Boulder; she raised four daughters\u2014she said, \u201cThey\u2019re not only beautiful, but they are engaging.\u201d I think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s a good word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014that\u2019s important, Bob; because I think, as parents, we have to find a way to get our kids\u2019 attention away from these little screens and engage them in a real relationship with you, as a parent; but pass on truth as you have the relationship in place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; Barbara, you said you\u2019d always wished you\u2019d had these when your kids were young. You actually started creating them after you were an empty-nester. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you\u2019ve now seen younger moms, who are grabbing onto these and doing with them what you wished you could have done when your kids were little. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Exactly; exactly. I didn\u2019t have the bandwidth when I was raising our kids. I wanted to\u2014I tried to do a few things\u2014but I just had too many interruptions, which most moms do. To be able to focus on creating them and, also, writing stories that you could read to your kids\u2014I just couldn\u2019t do it when I was raising kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt has been fun to watch these young moms do it, because we\u2019ve seen so many families use these ornaments. They read the stories out loud to their kids before Christmas in the month of December. We\u2019ve seen kids come to Christ; because it opened the door to a conversation about <em>why<\/em> each person needs to, individually, receive Jesus as Savior. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChildren have come to know Christ because of decorating the Christmas tree\u2014well, it seems to me\u2014that\u2019s what it should be about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got a link on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com if listeners want to go and see all of these ornaments\u2014all 30-plus\u2014whatever the number is that you\u2019ve created. They can go and click on the link and get an idea of how they can utilize the names of Christ as a part of their decoration but, also, as a part of their discipleship during the Christmas season. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And this year\u2019s names\u2014I think it\u2019s fun because she has \u201cHis Christmas Names,\u201d \u201cHis Savior Names,\u201d \u201cHis Eternal Names,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cRoyal Names.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014yes; \u201cRoyal Names.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cAdvent Names.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There you go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And \u201cHis Name Among the Nations,\u201d which is \u201cJesus\u201d in five different languages\u2014so ornaments that make your tree international. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And this year\u2019s? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And this year\u2014it\u2019s really <em>fun<\/em> to be doing this program on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> about this year\u2019s ornaments; because this year\u2019s ornaments are called \u201cHis Family Names.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you think about the Bible, what was one of the very first things\u2014and you\u2019ve said this, Dennis, a million times on the broadcast\u2014what\u2019s one of the first things that God created in the first few chapters of Genesis? He created marriage\u2014He called Adam and Eve to get married; and He said: \u201c\u2026reproduce children,\u201d\u2014create a family. At the end of the Bible, it talks about the family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Jesus came to earth, he came to show us the Father. That is very clear in the Book of John\u2014Jesus said, \u201cI came to show the Father,\u201d\u2014so we know of God as our Father; and Jesus told His disciples that He was their brother. He also talked about being our friend, and He talked about being our provider. Jesus is also our teacher\u2014that\u2019s really clear in the New Testament too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are <em>relationship<\/em> names that we\u2019re all very comfortable with, as people\u2014we know families. Moms and dads teach\u2014it says in Proverbs\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it commands mothers and fathers to teach your children. Parents are providers; parents are also teachers. Your children\u2014you want them to be friends with each other. So, the names of the ornaments this year are all family-centric. They are names that we associate with family\u2014with all families\u2014so to understand that Jesus initiated family in the first place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen He was born, He was born into a family. He had a mother and a father, and He had siblings. He\u2014when He went to heaven, He invited us to be a part of His forever family. It\u2019s a <em>relationship<\/em>\u2014the Trinity is a relationship, and we\u2019re invited to participate in that and to be a part of God\u2019s family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis year\u2019s ornaments are cute little chalkboard houses. They say: \u201cJesus is my friend,\u201d \u201c\u2026my provider,\u201d \u201c\u2026my brother,\u201d and \u201c\u2026my teacher.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And call me dense or thick\u2014even though I\u2019m married to this creative, beautiful follower of Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I really had never thought about: \u201cAll these are relational.\u201d Now, a family is about relationships; but you just articulated it and clarified it. I think that\u2019s important, because a family is where a child first finds out who God is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, think about it. Reflect on your own upbringing. Even if you didn\u2019t have godly parents, you <em>learned<\/em> a lot about who God is from imperfect parents. Our first concept of our heavenly Father comes from our earthly fathers. I think what we have here is a great vehicle to start talking to our children about the names of Christ, very practically, within the family setting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I\u2019ve really thought about what Barbara has done, I\u2019ve been amazed at how many different names Christ has in the Bible. How many did you tell me that you found? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, some scholars say as many as 300. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s just more than we can grasp or understand. Even if we saw a list of them, it\u2019s just mind-boggling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo have the names of Jesus\u2014the ones that are the most common \/ the ones that we know the best\u2014to have them in a visual form that you can put on your Christmas tree or even keep out all year\u2014I\u2019m recommending to families that they let their kids hang their favorite one of these little family names in their room all year long to remind them, throughout the school year, that: \u201cJesus is my friend\u201d; \u201cHe\u2019s my teacher\u201d; \u201cHe\u2019s my brother\u201d; because then, that makes us feel the warmth and the love that God has for us when we think about Him in these relational terms that we understand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTaking the names of Jesus\u2014and making them practical, making them visual, and designing them in such a way that it reflects a little bit of what that name is all about\u2014I think that helps us, as people in our finite limitedness, be able to embrace a little bit more of the incomprehensible God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you provide guidance for us. Along with the ornaments\u2014it\u2019s not just \u201cJesus is my friend,\u201d\u2014but\u2014\u201cHere are some thoughts on how we can meditate on that idea.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Really, when you take a concept like \u201cJesus is my friend,\u201d and you stop and you go: \u201cOkay; so what does that mean?\u2014the fact that I\u2019m a friend of God \/ that God is my friend. How am I to understand that? How does that change the way I relate to Jesus\u2014the way I relate to God?\u201d That\u2019s the kind of meditation you want us to be having, not just during the holiday season, but all-year long. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, and one of the things that I\u2019ve said, for years, when I speak to women is that moms need to be theologians; because moms are often the first person that a child asks a question about God\u2014they\u2019ll say: \u201cMommy, why can\u2019t I touch God?\u201d or \u201cWhy can\u2019t I talk to God?\u201d or whatever. Kids are going to ask mommy questions about God. Understanding the names and teaching your child who Jesus is through His various names is teaching them theology. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s just like you said: \u201cWhen we understand that Jesus is our friend, it changes us.\u201d Knowing all of His other names can change us also, so I think it\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> opportunity for moms in particular\u2014but moms and dads\u2014to teach the theology of who Jesus is through using the ornaments. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And she does for us what every parent needs somebody to do, especially during the Christmas season. I remember, as we\u2019d hang all the ornaments on a tree, my margins were razor-thin\u2014I didn\u2019t have much creativity to add to much conversation with my kids. What Barbara has done is\u2014she has created a devotional booklet. In this case, it\u2019s available online. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s a downloadable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s downloadable. To give you an illustration of what she does, here\u2019s the one on \u201cJesus is my brother.\u201d You tell a story about a ten-year-old boy by the name of Jacob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s just a story about a\u2014well, it\u2019s an <em>amazing<\/em> story, actually\u2014but it is a story about a little boy, who was at home in the summer. His little brother was playing around behind him. His little brother\u2014all of a sudden, he noticed his little two-year-old brother was not around; and it got real quiet. He thought, \u201cWonder where he is?\u201d He got up and noticed that the door to the backyard was open. He went outside and found his brother in the pool\u2014floating in the pool. There was no adult around, close, at the moment. He pulled his brother out and laid him on the concrete around the pool and started pumping on his chest, because he\u2019d seen that on TV. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> He managed to get him to start coughing and choking; and then, you know, an adult came. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt helps kids understand that this is what Jesus did for us\u2014He rescued us. We were lifeless\u2014we were floating on the pool, so to speak\u2014and Jesus came and rescued us. He pulled us out of the pool, because He is our brother. He <em>loves<\/em> us in a way no earthly brother will ever love us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a story that you can read to your kids so that they can identify with\u2014they can go, \u201cOh, wow!\u201d Then, they begin to relate: \u201cOh, Jesus is like that to me. He\u2019s going to be better to me than any brother I actually have,\u201d and \u201cI can follow Him as my brother.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I can tell you from personal experience\u2014Barbara and I needed a story about a brother and, maybe, rescuing a brother because there was a lot of sibling rivalry. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Oh my gosh\u2014it was horrible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There was not rescuing in our house. There was pestering\u2014there was torturing sisters and the other brother. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we\u2019re just talking about getting biblical core values in the family being taught by mom and dad in a practical way and create a discussion, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; yes. You mentioned that the devotional is downloadable.
