Thanks for joining us. I just want to know if there are any suitable young men in Halifax who have caught the attention of Jaquelle Crowe yet?\u2014do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s ask her! [Laughter] She\u2019s here\u2014she\u2019s right with us!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s true; it\u2019s true!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s written a book called <em>This Changes Everything<\/em>, and she\u2019s not talking about a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Well, the answer is, \u201cYes\u201d; but it\u2019s only pretty recent. I\u2019ve been asked this question one other time on radio\u2014many, many months ago\u2014and the answer was easy; it was, \u201cNo,\u201d\u2014but now the answer\u2019s a little bit trickier because it\u2019s, \u201cYes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you\u2019re kind of in the early stages of seeing\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> We are; we are in the early stages\u2014dating, courtship, or whatever you want to call it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Should I give your dad my book, <em>Interviewing Your Daughter\u2019s Date<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> You know, we actually saw a picture of it on the wall earlier today. I pointed it out to him and said, \u201cDad, you need to read that book.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, really?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Actually, you may need to go ahead and write the one you want to write\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014which is: <em>Six Conversations to Have with Your Future Son-in-Law, <\/em>but I don\u2019t want to be rushing anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle: <\/strong>Oh, there you go! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t want to rush anything here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, we are talking to Jaquelle Crowe. She is a graduate of Thomas Edison State University; she\u2019s a writer\u2014lives in Halifax, as we\u2019ve mentioned\u2014and is a contributor to The Gospel Coalition, DesiringGod.org, and Unlocking the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis first book, <em>This Changes Everything, <\/em>is about how the gospel transforms the teen years. We\u2019ve been talking about the challenges for teens today. They really need to be anchored, spiritually, as never before because of the messages and issues that they\u2019re facing; don\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Absolutely! They are being bombarded <em>constantly<\/em> with messages from the world, from home, from church; and all of these messages are just competing ideologies. Young people need to know where they can place their hope and trust.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019s a lot of click-bait on the internet\u2014there\u2019s a lot of stuff that will pop up in your feed, where you go, \u201cThat looks kind of interesting,\u201d or you\u2019ll read something and you go: \u201cOh! That makes sense.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHave you found yourself kind of going down the rabbit hole a few times, and going: \u201cWait, wait; wait! What am I even doing in here?\u201d and \u201cWhy am I reading this stuff? This just isn\u2019t true!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, for sure! I think every young person, at least, and maybe every person who has access to the internet has done this; Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> can just be the worst for this. I think this comes back to something that my parents have always been teaching me, which is the issue of discernment\u2014being able to tell the difference between: \u201cWhat is true?\u201d \u201cWhat is not?\u201d \u201cWhat is authentic?\u201d and \u201cWhat is just false information?\u201d Sometimes, I have not been good at that; but that\u2019s something that you really have to work on, and especially train your young people in this digital age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, as we\u2019ve talked this week, it has sounded like the fifth commandment\u2014the one to \u201cHonor your father and mother\u2026\u201d\u2014you may have broken some commandments, but this is one that you just never broke in your\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, I\u2019m clearly <em>perfect<\/em> at it![Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It sounds like there\u2019s never been\u2014and I just want to pop the bubble a little bit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Let\u2019s pop it, for sure!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019ve been sometimes you\u2019ve been mad at your mom or dad; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, definitely! There have been times that I have been mad at my parents; there have been times that my parents have been mad at me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> For instance?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> For instance\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Have you ever been grounded?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> \u2014I was homeschooled\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014permanently grounded! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> \u2014so grounding never really worked. [Laughter] When I was younger, especially, and all throughout my life, I did have an issue with attitude in that I was not the most respectful to my parents\u2014yes; that\u2019s probably the issue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Seriously?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, I\u2019m being 100 percent serious!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re so sweet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, I must put on a good front!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So what would disrespectful look like? Were you snarky with your parents?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> I was very snarky, especially with my mom. I was someone who was a rule-follower, so I was willing to obey; but I would make it very apparent that I did not find any joy in obeying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, I could go on and on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you ever have a season of, \u201cI just don\u2019t like them right now, and I wish they were out of my life!\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> No; that never happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re pretty smart\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Thanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014you graduated from college at 18?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There had to be a point where you thought you were smarter than your parents. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> You know what? I don\u2019t think there was! I mean, the college thing is a little bit different; because I studied long-distance, and I actually did dual-credit. We\u2019ll just throw out a little aside\u2014a tidbit\u2014here. I took the courses during high school that counted for both high school and college, so I\u2019m not as smart as you think I am.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, you may be as smart as we think you are!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> I just tweaked the system, basically. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you\u2019re saying that your relationship with your mom and dad, for the most part, throughout your life, has been a solid relationship. What would you say is the thing that <em>they<\/em> have done that has made that relationship healthy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> A lot of things, but the biggest thing\u2014like, when I look back on my teen years\/I look back on my pre-teen years\u2014I think about what marked my relationship with my parents is that I knew that they loved me. Everything they did in my life\u2014even the stuff that ticked me off, and the times that they did punish me for being snarky or, you know, being mean to my brother\u2014it was all because they had my best interest at heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s one of those things that I did not recognize at the time; but when I think back on it, my parents were not people who just had an authority trip or who didn\u2019t like us \/ just kind of tolerated us. My parents really liked hanging out with us! They did things <em>so that <\/em>we could spend time together, and they could just kind of pour into me, and take time to learn about my interests and treat me as a human and not just someone for whom it was like, \u201cWell, this is my child.\u201d They had the respect to treat me as a fellow image-bearer of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you did get punished, how did you get punished? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, were there time-outs when you were little? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Time-outs when I was little\u2014I would be sent to my room. Oh, do you want to hear something really nerdy about me?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Okay; so I love books, and I\u2019ve always been a big reader. My mom punished me by taking away my books for a day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cYou can\u2019t read for the day.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> That was <em>devastating<\/em>\u2014I will tell you! I was <em>so <\/em>sad!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are some teenagers, listening right now to this broadcast. Their eyes just rolled back into their heads\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> I\u2019m sorry! I\u2019m sorry I\u2019m such a geek.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cPunish me [with lack of books to read]; please!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But did they ever take away your device and wouldn\u2019t let you have your device?\u2014or did you manage that well?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s an interesting one; because I did not get a smartphone until I was 18, so there wasn\u2019t really an issue there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you want a smartphone when you were 16?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> A little bit, but this was another area where my parents, right from the beginning, were like: \u201cLook! We don\u2019t think it\u2019s a good idea, and here\u2019s why... Ask us your questions; give us your pushback. Let\u2019s talk about this together.\u201d That was not a rule that they were like: \u201cNo! This is <em>never<\/em> happening. No discussion.\u201d They were like: \u201cLet\u2019s talk about it. Let\u2019s talk to other people about it,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014so it was always kind of an ongoing discussion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, they were the ones\u2014they actually bought me a smartphone for my 18<sup>th<\/sup> birthday. At that point, I was like: \u201cOh! This is great!\u201d But I had spent so many years not being dependent on it that I wasn\u2019t like: \u201cOh, my goodness! This is the fulfillment to my joy!\u201d My parents did a really great job with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, if you had to pass one lesson you\u2019ve learned about honoring your parents on to a teenager, who may be listening right now\u2014in that teenager\u2019s language\u2014what would you say to him or her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> I would just say, \u201cRemember that your parents are people too.\u201d This is a big thing for me\u2014it\u2019s hard <em>not <\/em>to think of your parents as \u201cMom and Dad,\u201d\u2014like: \u201cThat is their identity. They exist to be my parents.\u201d No; your parents are people, too, with their own issues\u2014with their own fears, and doubts, and questions. They don\u2019t have all of life figured out; they are not perfect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are not trying to kill all your fun and rob you of joy. Your parents are just doing their best!\u2014they really are. You may not agree with them all of the time, and they may not get it right all the time, but they are <em>trying<\/em> to help you and trying to love you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Jaquelle, in the summer after my freshman year in college, I was 19. I went to a Bible study that summer. I remember walking out of that Bible study with just what you\u2019re talking about. It was like the light had been turned on for the first time in my life and I went, \u201cOh!\u201d because they talked about that fact that, \u201cYour parents have insecurities in the work place.\u201d I thought: \u201cNo, no; no. Teenagers have insecurities. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cParents don\u2019t have insecurities.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey talked about: \u201cYour parents have fears that they face; your parents have doubts; your parents have\u2026\u201d\u2014they went through the whole gamut. It was like: \u201cI\u2019ve never thought of that! This is what human beings\u2014even grown-up human beings\u2014have to deal with.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought it was just teenage angst. I didn\u2019t realize that\u2019s just a part of being human. And when I realized that, it altered the way that I interacted with my parents; because, all of a sudden, I had some compassion for the humanity they were having to deal with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s true. You look at your parents very differently once you realize that they do not exist just to be your parents\u2014that they\u2019re a lot more like you than you think they are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I want to talk, just a little bit later, more about honoring your parents; but I just want to close this section out by reading the fifth commandment. Maybe there\u2019s a person who hasn\u2019t heard it recently: \u201cHonor your father and your mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.\u201d Now, that\u2019s right in there between remembering the Sabbath and \u201cYou shall not commit murder,\u201d\u2014pretty heavy issues.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s an important one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is an important one, and we\u2019re going to come back to it again. Remind me, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I will remind you, because I know what you have in mind here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to know about\u2014you\u2019re the oldest of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> \u2014two; just two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your brother\u2014right?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014younger than you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> \u2014younger brother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How much younger is he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> He is two years younger than me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So was there ever any sibling rivalry as you guys were growing up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know rivalry, but we definitely fought. We fought a lot when we were younger, but as we got older\u2014we are very different kids, so he has never had any interest in doing pretty much any of the things that I wanted to do, which has worked out well. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cYou can go your own way, bro!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You get to do what you want to do; he does what he wants to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s true; it\u2019s true, and it works!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you were fighting, as little kids,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014how did your mom and dad deal with sibling rivalry?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s a good question. Man, you should ask them. They were always very, very supportive of us\u2014both of us\u2014and never, ever, ever played favorites\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> \u2014naturally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Then, what they tried to do, I think, is try to champion us in our own kind of pursuits. This is something that they never said to me, but a friend of mine actually mentioned that this was how his parents treated it. I said: \u201cWhoa! That\u2019s exactly like my parents,\u201d\u2014is that they said, \u201cIf you can\u2019t win the race, then make sure the person who beats you breaks the record.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo it was like, even in the times that we did compete, that there was always a point where it was like: \u201cHey! You guys are siblings. You need to look out for one another.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, when our kids were growing up, they all took piano lessons, which meant that there was a day, pretty much every year for\u2014I don\u2019t know\u201410 or 15 years, on a Saturday, where I was going to a piano recital. Now, can I just tell you?\u2014piano recitals, where seven-year-olds are playing the piece they\u2019ve been working on\u2014it\u2019s kind of like, if you put that on my list of things to do for the weekend, would not be my highest priority. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> We\u2019re not going to judge you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was also not the highest priority for an older sibling to come hear their seven-year-old brother or sister do their piano recital. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> My initial thought was: \u201cOkay; they can go to their recital. Mary Ann can take them\u2014my wife\u2014she can take them to the recital, and I hope it all goes fine.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Mary Ann was like: \u201cNo! We <em>all <\/em>go to the recital!\u201d I am like: \u201cReally? We all have to go to the recital?\u201d But this was so smart on Mary Ann\u2019s part, because it\u2019s how we supported one another \/ it is how we cheered one another on\u2014it is how we said, \u201cWe\u2019re on your team, and what you\u2019re doing is important!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSure, we sat there; and I had my device out. I was surfing the web when the other kids were playing. [Laughter] Then, when my kid was playing, then I\u2019m filming it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Of course! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Then I am back on the device when it is all over. But, you know what? To be able, afterwards, to go up and say: \u201cYou did great! That was awesome! Let\u2019s watch that again!\u201d\u2014that communicates hugely, not just from a parent to a child\u2014but siblings to say to a younger brother: \u201cYou did good, man! That was good!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes; exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s meaningful; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s true. And I should just say\u2014my brother is not a gushy person, so I don\u2019t think he\u2019s ever told me that he\u2019s proud of me or that he supports me; but I know that he does. He does it in his own way\u2014in his own brother way\u2014and in a way that I know, \u201cHey, we are on the same team!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So when you got your copy in the mail\u2014your very first copy of <em>This Changes Everything<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes; yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It comes to the house, and it is like: \u201cThis is my book! I got a book!\u201d Did your brother look at it and go, \u201cNice job, sister,\u201d or did he just say, \u201cHmm\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Probably a mix between the two. He was like: \u201cYou know what? That\u2019s cool; yes!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cGood for you!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Pretty much; but then he went out for ice cream with us, so he was pretty happy at that point!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alright; okay!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That was what I was going to ask you: \u201cWhat does your brother do to decrease sibling rivalry between you and him?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> So my brother and I are pretty good friends right now. We hang out, and we do stuff that has nothing to do with our work. We go see movies together; we go hang out together. Before this interview, I texted him for about an hour. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just like hanging out together, because we\u2019re so different! He does not like writing; he does not like speaking in front of people. He does <em>not <\/em>like doing interviews. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you took away his books for the day, it would be great!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, exactly! For him, it would be his video games\u2014that was his punishment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Got it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> But, yes; we\u2019re just so different. He\u2019s always been like: \u201cYou know what? You just do you, and I\u2019m good with that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019ve been looking over your shoulder, at your father, this entire interview. I think, for the most part, they have quite a good relationship. They are <em>incredibly<\/em> different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We get that\u2014we\u2019ve got it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sean:<\/strong> You would wonder if they were from the same parents, but they do get along quite well; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you don\u2019t remember a time when there was 48 hours when she wasn\u2019t talking to either of you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sean:<\/strong> I really don\u2019t; no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; what a blessing, as a parent; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sean:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Isn\u2019t that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sean:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That really is!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s sweet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; Jaquelle, so here\u2019s the assignment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wrote a book\u2014wow!\u201420 years ago?\u2014maybe 25 years ago\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It <em>was<\/em> 25 years ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014called <em>The Tribute<\/em>. It was about <em>The Forgotten Commandment<\/em>. I believe the fifth commandment has been one that, for the most part, the community of faith has ignored\u2014and really, hasn\u2019t called parents, first of all, to be honorable; but secondly, called children to honor their parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and adult children, not just little children. A lot of people think this has a statute of limitations on it; you know?\u2014\u201cWhen you\u2019re 18, now, you don\u2019t have to honor your parents anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; or \u201cMy parents weren\u2019t very good like Jaquelle\u2019s parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cSo that enables me and empowers me to not honor them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wrote this book about writing a tribute to your parents; because my dad died in 1976, the year we started FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I really never got to say to him everything I wanted to say to him. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s not here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> We\u2019ll start with the <em>easy<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And this is not what you would tell other people about them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is what you\u2019d tell <em>them<\/em>; so if your mom was here, and you were looking her in the eye, what would you say to her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Right; just between us, with no one else listening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMom, I want to thank you for all of the years and all of the time that you sacrificed to pour into me\u2014all of the books that you read with me; all of the hours that you prayed for me; all of the questions that you answered for me; and all of the times that you listened to my doubts, and fears, and ramblings, and insecurities and just responded with incredible love and grace when I didn\u2019t deserve it; all the times that you forgave me for not being a nice child, or a nice teen, or a nice 20-something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd for all the times that you asked forgiveness of me\u2014that you modeled repentance\u2014that you were willing to own up when you failed, and that you could model for me such a love for Jesus that I saw that and I said: \u201cI want that! I want to be like you as you are like Jesus.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to thank you for all of that in a way that I could never repay the gifts you\u2019ve given me. I hope, one day, to be half or a quarter of the mom that you were to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now the harder part.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Okay!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDad, it\u2019s nice to see you there. [Laughter] I mean, you\u2019ve gone to South Carolina, Florida, Indianapolis, and Chicago! You\u2019ve gone to a lot of places with me\u2014not because it helps you at all or is of any benefit to you\u2014besides to support me and to love me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI do absolutely believe that this book is your book too\u2014I, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t100 percent, believe that! It\u2019s probably more your book than mine, because we joke that everything that I\u2019ve learned you probably said first; because you have talked a lot, in a good way. Your words have gone in, because they have been faithful and you have been faithful. [Laughter] She\u2019s here\u2014she\u2019s right with us!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s true; it\u2019s true!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s written a book called <em>This Changes Everything<\/em>, and she\u2019s not talking about a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Well, the answer is, \u201cYes\u201d; but it\u2019s only pretty recent. I\u2019ve been asked this question one other time on radio\u2014many, many months ago\u2014and the answer was easy; it was, \u201cNo,\u201d\u2014but now the answer\u2019s a little bit trickier because it\u2019s, \u201cYes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you\u2019re kind of in the early stages of seeing\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> We are; we are in the early stages\u2014dating, courtship, or whatever you want to call it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Should I give your dad my book, <em>Interviewing Your Daughter\u2019s Date<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> You know, we actually saw a picture of it on the wall earlier today. She is a graduate of Thomas Edison State University; she\u2019s a writer\u2014lives in Halifax, as we\u2019ve mentioned\u2014and is a contributor to The Gospel Coalition, DesiringGod.org, and Unlocking the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis first book, <em>This Changes Everything, <\/em>is about how the gospel transforms the teen years. We\u2019ve been talking about the challenges for teens today. They really need to be anchored, spiritually, as never before because of the messages and issues that they\u2019re facing; don\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Absolutely! They are being bombarded <em>constantly<\/em> with messages from the world, from home, from church; and all of these messages are just competing ideologies. Young people need to know where they can place their hope and trust.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019s a lot of click-bait on the internet\u2014there\u2019s a lot of stuff that will pop up in your feed, where you go, \u201cThat looks kind of interesting,\u201d or you\u2019ll read something and you go: \u201cOh! That makes sense.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHave you found yourself kind of going down the rabbit hole a few times, and going: \u201cWait, wait; wait! What am I even doing in here?\u201d and \u201cWhy am I reading this stuff? This just isn\u2019t true!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, for sure! I think every young person, at least, and maybe every person who has access to the internet has done this; Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> can just be the worst for this. I think this comes back to something that my parents have always been teaching me, which is the issue of discernment\u2014being able to tell the difference between: \u201cWhat is true?\u201d \u201cWhat is not?\u201d \u201cWhat is authentic?\u201d and \u201cWhat is just false information?\u201d Sometimes, I have not been good at that; but that\u2019s something that you really have to work on, and especially train your young people in this digital age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, as we\u2019ve talked this week, it has sounded like the fifth commandment\u2014the one to \u201cHonor your father and mother\u2026\u201d\u2014you may have broken some commandments, but this is one that you just never broke in your\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, I\u2019m clearly <em>perfect<\/em> at it![Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It sounds like there\u2019s never been\u2014and I just want to pop the bubble a little bit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Let\u2019s pop it, for sure!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019ve been sometimes you\u2019ve been mad at your mom or dad; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, definitely! [Laughter] When I was younger, especially, and all throughout my life, I did have an issue with attitude in that I was not the most respectful to my parents\u2014yes; that\u2019s probably the issue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Seriously?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, I\u2019m being 100 percent serious!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re so sweet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, I must put on a good front!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So what would disrespectful look like? Were you snarky with your parents?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> I was very snarky, especially with my mom. My mom was the main person who taught my brother and me, so we spent a lot of time together. My mom and I are quite alike. Well, my dad and I are also alike, which can make things hard; but yes, snarkiness. I was someone who was a rule-follower, so I was willing to obey; but I would make it very apparent that I did not find any joy in obeying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, I could go on and on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you ever have a season of, \u201cI just don\u2019t like them right now, and I wish they were out of my life!\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> No; that never happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re pretty smart\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Thanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014you graduated from college at 18?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There had to be a point where you thought you were smarter than your parents. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> You know what? I don\u2019t think there was! I mean, the college thing is a little bit different; because I studied long-distance, and I actually did dual-credit. We\u2019ll just throw out a little aside\u2014a tidbit\u2014here. I took the courses during high school that counted for both high school and college, so I\u2019m not as smart as you think I am.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, you may be as smart as we think you are!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> I just tweaked the system, basically. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you\u2019re saying that your relationship with your mom and dad, for the most part, throughout your life, has been a solid relationship. What would you say is the thing that <em>they<\/em> have done that has made that relationship healthy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> A lot of things, but the biggest thing\u2014like, when I look back on my teen years\/I look back on my pre-teen years\u2014I think about what marked my relationship with my parents is that I knew that they loved me. Everything they did in my life\u2014even the stuff that ticked me off, and the times that they did punish me for being snarky or, you know, being mean to my brother\u2014it was all because they had my best interest at heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s one of those things that I did not recognize at the time; but when I think back on it, my parents were not people who just had an authority trip or who didn\u2019t like us \/ just kind of tolerated us. My parents really liked hanging out with us! They did things <em>so that <\/em>we could spend time together, and they could just kind of pour into me, and take time to learn about my interests and treat me as a human and not just someone for whom it was like, \u201cWell, this is my child.\u201d They had the respect to treat me as a fellow image-bearer of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you did get punished, how did you get punished? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, were there time-outs when you were little? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Time-outs when I was little\u2014I would be sent to my room. Oh, do you want to hear something really nerdy about me?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Okay; so I love books, and I\u2019ve always been a big reader. My mom punished me by taking away my books for a day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cYou can\u2019t read for the day.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> That was <em>devastating<\/em>\u2014I will tell you! I was <em>so <\/em>sad!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are some teenagers, listening right now to this broadcast. Their eyes just rolled back into their heads\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> I\u2019m sorry! I\u2019m sorry I\u2019m such a geek.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cPunish me [with lack of books to read]; please!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But did they ever take away your device and wouldn\u2019t let you have your device?\u2014or did you manage that well?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s an interesting one; because I did not get a smartphone until I was 18, so there wasn\u2019t really an issue there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you want a smartphone when you were 16?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> A little bit, but this was another area where my parents, right from the beginning, were like: \u201cLook! We don\u2019t think it\u2019s a good idea, and here\u2019s why... Ask us your questions; give us your pushback. Let\u2019s talk about this together.\u201d That was not a rule that they were like: \u201cNo! This is <em>never<\/em> happening. No discussion.\u201d They were like: \u201cLet\u2019s talk about it. Let\u2019s read articles about it together. Let\u2019s talk to other people about it,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014so it was always kind of an ongoing discussion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, they were the ones\u2014they actually bought me a smartphone for my 18<sup>th<\/sup> birthday. At that point, I was like: \u201cOh! This is great!\u201d But I had spent so many years not being dependent on it that I wasn\u2019t like: \u201cOh, my goodness! This is the fulfillment to my joy!\u201d My parents did a really great job with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, if you had to pass one lesson you\u2019ve learned about honoring your parents on to a teenager, who may be listening right now\u2014in that teenager\u2019s language\u2014what would you say to him or her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> I would just say, \u201cRemember that your parents are people too.\u201d This is a big thing for me\u2014it\u2019s hard <em>not <\/em>to think of your parents as \u201cMom and Dad,\u201d\u2014like: \u201cThat is their identity. They exist to be my parents.\u201d No; your parents are people, too, with their own issues\u2014with their own fears, and doubts, and questions. They don\u2019t have all of life figured out; they are not perfect. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are not trying to kill all your fun and rob you of joy. Your parents are just doing their best!\u2014they really are. You may not agree with them all of the time, and they may not get it right all the time, but they are <em>trying<\/em> to help you and trying to love you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Jaquelle, in the summer after my freshman year in college, I was 19. I went to a Bible study that summer. I remember walking out of that Bible study with just what you\u2019re talking about. It was like the light had been turned on for the first time in my life and I went, \u201cOh!\u201d because they talked about that fact that, \u201cYour parents have insecurities in the work place.\u201d I thought: \u201cNo, no; no. Teenagers have insecurities. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cParents don\u2019t have insecurities.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey talked about: \u201cYour parents have fears that they face; your parents have doubts; your parents have\u2026\u201d\u2014they went through the whole gamut. It was like: \u201cI\u2019ve never thought of that! This is what human beings\u2014even grown-up human beings\u2014have to deal with.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought it was just teenage angst. I didn\u2019t realize that\u2019s just a part of being human. And when I realized that, it altered the way that I interacted with my parents; because, all of a sudden, I had some compassion for the humanity they were having to deal with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s true. You look at your parents very differently once you realize that they do not exist just to be your parents\u2014that they\u2019re a lot more like you than you think they are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I want to talk, just a little bit later, more about honoring your parents; but I just want to close this section out by reading the fifth commandment. Maybe there\u2019s a person who hasn\u2019t heard it recently: \u201cHonor your father and your mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.\u201d Now, that\u2019s right in there between remembering the Sabbath and \u201cYou shall not commit murder,\u201d\u2014pretty heavy issues.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s an important one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is an important one, and we\u2019re going to come back to it again. Remind me, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I will remind you, because I know what you have in mind here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to know about\u2014you\u2019re the oldest of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> \u2014two; just two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your brother\u2014right?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014younger than you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> \u2014younger brother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How much younger is he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> He is two years younger than me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So was there ever any sibling rivalry as you guys were growing up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know rivalry, but we definitely fought. We fought a lot when we were younger, but as we got older\u2014we are very different kids, so he has never had any interest in doing pretty much any of the things that I wanted to do, which has worked out well. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cYou can go your own way, bro!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You get to do what you want to do; he does what he wants to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> It\u2019s true; it\u2019s true, and it works!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you were fighting, as little kids,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014how did your mom and dad deal with sibling rivalry?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> That\u2019s a good question. Man, you should ask them. They were always very, very supportive of us\u2014both of us\u2014and never, ever, ever played favorites\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> \u2014naturally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Then, what they tried to do, I think, is try to champion us in our own kind of pursuits. This is something that they never said to me, but a friend of mine actually mentioned that this was how his parents treated it. I said: \u201cWhoa! That\u2019s exactly like my parents,\u201d\u2014is that they said, \u201cIf you can\u2019t win the race, then make sure the person who beats you breaks the record.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo it was like, even in the times that we did compete, that there was always a point where it was like: \u201cHey! You guys are siblings. You need to look out for one another.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, when our kids were growing up, they all took piano lessons, which meant that there was a day, pretty much every year for\u2014I don\u2019t know\u201410 or 15 years, on a Saturday, where I was going to a piano recital. Now, can I just tell you?\u2014piano recitals, where seven-year-olds are playing the piece they\u2019ve been working on\u2014it\u2019s kind of like, if you put that on my list of things to do for the weekend, would not be my highest priority. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> We\u2019re not going to judge you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was also not the highest priority for an older sibling to come hear their seven-year-old brother or sister do their piano recital. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> My initial thought was: \u201cOkay; they can go to their recital. Mary Ann can take them\u2014my wife\u2014she can take them to the recital, and I hope it all goes fine.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Mary Ann was like: \u201cNo! We <em>all <\/em>go to the recital!\u201d I am like: \u201cReally? We all have to go to the recital?\u201d But this was so smart on Mary Ann\u2019s part, because it\u2019s how we supported one another \/ it is how we cheered one another on\u2014it is how we said, \u201cWe\u2019re on your team, and what you\u2019re doing is important!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSure, we sat there; and I had my device out. I was surfing the web when the other kids were playing. [Laughter] Then, when my kid was playing, then I\u2019m filming it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Of course! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Then I am back on the device when it is all over. But, you know what? To be able, afterwards, to go up and say: \u201cYou did great! That was awesome! Let\u2019s watch that again!\u201d\u2014that communicates hugely, not just from a parent to a child\u2014but siblings to say to a younger brother: \u201cYou did good, man! That was good!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes; exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s meaningful; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s true. And I should just say\u2014my brother is not a gushy person, so I don\u2019t think he\u2019s ever told me that he\u2019s proud of me or that he supports me; but I know that he does. He does it in his own way\u2014in his own brother way\u2014and in a way that I know, \u201cHey, we are on the same team!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So when you got your copy in the mail\u2014your very first copy of <em>This Changes Everything<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes; yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It comes to the house, and it is like: \u201cThis is my book! I got a book!\u201d Did your brother look at it and go, \u201cNice job, sister,\u201d or did he just say, \u201cHmm\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Probably a mix between the two. He was like: \u201cYou know what? That\u2019s cool; yes!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cGood for you!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Pretty much; but then he went out for ice cream with us, so he was pretty happy at that point!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alright; okay!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That was what I was going to ask you: \u201cWhat does your brother do to decrease sibling rivalry between you and him?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> So my brother and I are pretty good friends right now. We hang out, and we do stuff that has nothing to do with our work. We go see movies together; we go hang out together. Before this interview, I texted him for about an hour. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just like hanging out together, because we\u2019re so different! He does not like writing; he does not like speaking in front of people. He does <em>not <\/em>like doing interviews. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you took away his books for the day, it would be great!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Oh, exactly! For him, it would be his video games\u2014that was his punishment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Got it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> But, yes; we\u2019re just so different. He\u2019s always been like: \u201cYou know what? I think, for the most part, they have quite a good relationship. They are <em>incredibly<\/em> different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We get that\u2014we\u2019ve got it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sean:<\/strong> You would wonder if they were from the same parents, but they do get along quite well; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you don\u2019t remember a time when there was 48 hours when she wasn\u2019t talking to either of you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sean:<\/strong> I really don\u2019t; no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; what a blessing, as a parent; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sean:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Isn\u2019t that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sean:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That really is!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s sweet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; Jaquelle, so here\u2019s the assignment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wrote a book\u2014wow!\u201420 years ago?\u2014maybe 25 years ago\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It <em>was<\/em> 25 years ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014called <em>The Tribute<\/em>. It was about <em>The Forgotten Commandment<\/em>. I believe the fifth commandment has been one that, for the most part, the community of faith has ignored\u2014and really, hasn\u2019t called parents, first of all, to be honorable; but secondly, called children to honor their parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and adult children, not just little children. A lot of people think this has a statute of limitations on it; you know?\u2014\u201cWhen you\u2019re 18, now, you don\u2019t have to honor your parents anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; or \u201cMy parents weren\u2019t very good like Jaquelle\u2019s parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cSo that enables me and empowers me to not honor them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wrote this book about writing a tribute to your parents; because my dad died in 1976, the year we started FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I really never got to say to him everything I wanted to say to him. I did write one to my mom, and I spent a long time writing it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realize I\u2019m not giving you any time to write a tribute, but I thought the way you have spoken of both your mom and your dad\u2014to have your dad here in the studio with you might be really sweet for you to just look him in the eye and give him a tribute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe, begin with your mom; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Okay! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She\u2019s not here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> We\u2019ll start with the <em>easy<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And this is not what you would tell other people about them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is what you\u2019d tell <em>them<\/em>; so if your mom was here, and you were looking her in the eye, what would you say to her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Right; just between us, with no one else listening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMom, I want to thank you for all of the years and all of the time that you sacrificed to pour into me\u2014all of the books that you read with me; all of the hours that you prayed for me; all of the questions that you answered for me; and all of the times that you listened to my doubts, and fears, and ramblings, and insecurities and just responded with incredible love and grace when I didn\u2019t deserve it; all the times that you forgave me for not being a nice child, or a nice teen, or a nice 20-something. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd for all the times that you asked forgiveness of me\u2014that you modeled repentance\u2014that you were willing to own up when you failed, and that you could model for me such a love for Jesus that I saw that and I said: \u201cI want that! I want to be like you as you are like Jesus.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to thank you for all of that in a way that I could never repay the gifts you\u2019ve given me. I hope, one day, to be half or a quarter of the mom that you were to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now the harder part.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> Okay!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDad, it\u2019s nice to see you there. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sean:<\/strong> Yes; nice to see you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jaquelle:<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I will thank you, too, for all of the time that you poured into me\u2014for all of the theology books that you read with me; for all of the time that you spent memorizing Scripture with me; for all of the time that you spent teaching me from God\u2019s Word, leading family worship; all of the time that you spent helping me learn discernment, and helping me learn how to navigate the teen years, and learn how the gospel really changes everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of the time that you have invested in helping me go and do what God has called me to do\u2014for being willing to come to Arkansas with me! [Laughter] I mean, you\u2019ve gone to South Carolina, Florida, Indianapolis, and Chicago! You\u2019ve gone to a lot of places with me\u2014not because it helps you at all or is of any benefit to you\u2014besides to support me and to love me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI do absolutely believe that this book is your book too\u2014I, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t100 percent, believe that! It\u2019s probably more your book than mine, because we joke that everything that I\u2019ve learned you probably said first; because you have talked a lot, in a good way. Your words have gone in, because they have been faithful and you have been faithful. So thank you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sean:<\/strong> I would do it all again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> All I can say is\u2014this is one of the limitations of radio\u2014that you can\u2019t see Sean\u2019s face, and you can\u2019t see Jaquelle\u2019s face as well.
