I still had a real, deep clinical depression; and my eating disorder\u2014most of it\u2014was because of the depression of just\u2014I didn\u2019t want to eat; I didn\u2019t want to take care of myself. I felt great shame and embarrassment that I couldn\u2019t get out of it. Then, I was like, \u201cWell, God must not love me, because I\u2019m not healed; so then, why should I live?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, October 12<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine. When we have friends or family members, who are in a hard place like Lee Blum was in, do we know how to help? If we find ourselves in that place, how can we be brave? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ll talk more about that today. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. Do you remember a book that came out when we were back in school? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You remember <em>one<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I do! I do! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just one. I\u2019m thinking\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I read it in the first grade. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I had to read it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You did not read this one in the first grade. This is a book that I think won the Pulitzer Prize. It was written by a president, but it captured the imagination of a nation. It was the book, <em>Profiles\u2014<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014<em>in Courage<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> <em>\u2014in Courage<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014by JFK. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; John F. Kennedy wrote a book where he told us stories of courageous people. I think we were a nation, then\u2014and maybe a nation today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that needs to hear stories of courageous people; because, as you\u2019ve quoted\u2014who is it that said, \u201cWhen one person is courageous, the spines of others stiffen\u201d?\u2014who said that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Billy Graham. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And JFK made the statement\u2014this won\u2019t be exactly as he said it in the book, <em>Profiles in Courage<\/em>\u2014but he made the statement that some men\/some women sail with the wind until the events of the day propel them into the center of a storm. And it\u2019s back to the idea that the book is written about great men and women, who displayed profiles of being courageous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a guest with us today, Lee Wolfe Blum, who has written a book called <em>Brave Is the New Beautiful<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you\u2019re\u2014do you think of yourself as a brave person? [Laughter]I mean, that\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, come on! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> That\u2019s a longer question. [Laughter] I can answer that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Come on\u2014be truthful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve had to confront your fears\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and to embrace bravery; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Oh, absolutely; or I wouldn\u2019t have written the book. I always feel like everything that I try\u2014and anything that I speak about or write about\u2014is always something that I feel like God is teaching me. Otherwise, I\u2019d feel like I don\u2019t have any authority over it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould I say I\u2019m brave? I would say, \u201cYes; now, I can say I\u2019m brave.\u201d I\u2019m almost 46, so it\u2019s taken me this long; but the bravest thing that I have to do every day is be the person that God made me to be. I say that because, as I mentioned before, I grew up in a verbally-abusive home and live in a culture now\u2014that we all live in\u2014where there is this idea that I\u2019m supposed to be one way; right? There is this idea that the Lee that I\u2019m supposed to be is all these voices of my past \/ all these voices of the world. So, for me, the bravest thing that I can do is not listen to that and step into who God has made me to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s hard for me; because I very easily can get stuck in shame\u2014and a deep, deep pit of shame. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>The more I reach into Scripture, and the more I <em>believe<\/em> God and what He says, the more I can step out and do the things that God has called me to do. For me, I\u2019m not afraid to get on stage. I was the Easter bunny in the mall one year\u2014I\u2019m not afraid of any of those things. What I\u2019m most afraid of is that you\u2019ll know all the parts of me\u2014all the icky parts\u2014but God\u2014and I love this quote by Brennan Manning: \u201cDefine yourself radically as one beloved by God. This is the true self. Every other identity is an illusion.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I start to get either full of shame\u2014or even full of pride\u2014I start to remember that\u2014like: \u201cGod calls me the beloved. God loves me.\u201d I feel we need to shout that <em>everywhere<\/em>\u2014our teenagers need to hear it; the elderly need to hear it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe need to <em>shout<\/em> out people\u2019s worth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve become a culture that has just\u2014especially on Twitter<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and the internet\u2014we just immediately attack each other and eat each other alive. As I mentioned before, you never know what somebody is going through. Instead, let\u2019s shout\u2014let\u2019s shout out each other\u2019s worth. Let\u2019s say: \u201cYou\u2019re the beloved. You are loved by God!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think sometimes, Bob, our courage factor needs to be poked on a little bit, which Lee does in her book, just to get us to step out and engage other people\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014who are hurting, who have messed up, and who need a friend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, one of the ways, Lee, that you do that in the book, <em>Brave Is the New Beautiful<\/em>, is you draw pictures for us. You paint portraits of women\u2014who you\u2019ve met \/ women whose stories you know\u2014who have modeled bravery\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014like the story of Amy, who was sexually abused by a gymnastics coach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve read a lot about this in the papers; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. Right; right. Amy\u2014this happened years ago; she\u2019s a grown adult now. Amy, at first, didn\u2019t want to come out and say that this had happened; because the culture she was in was starting to pick sides. She was a young 12-year-old little girl, and she didn\u2019t want to come out and say this happened; but then, eventually, she did report what happened. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> She ended up having to be on stand for <em>five hours<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014as a 12-year-old? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> \u2014as a 12-year-old\u2014for five hours, staring him in the eyes\u2014that is unbelievable bravery! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I interviewed this girl, Amy\u2014she is now in her 20s\u2014she was like, \u201cYes; it was really hard, but it\u2019s what I did \/ it\u2019s what I needed to do.\u201d That changed the trajectory of her life. Sometimes, acting out in those scary things can completely change the trajectory of our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat it did for her is\u2014she was no longer holding the trauma in her body. She was using her voice to speak what was true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve read these stories, as I\u2019ve said, of women on the Michigan State gymnastics team\u2014and women who were abused beyond that scope. Many of these women were silent about their abuse for decades. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Why would so many not say: \u201cHang on! This is wrong. This happened to me\u201d? Why the silence? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> That\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> question\u2014and one of my favorite questions\u2014because, as I mentioned, the book was called <em>Me Too<\/em>; and now, it\u2019s not. I often get interviews to talk about this MeToo movement and, especially, the MeToo movement in the church\u2014it\u2019s happening. We cannot deny that it is now affecting the American church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>The reason why people stay silent is\u2014you have to understand what happens to the body when it is traumatized\u2014not only when it\u2019s traumatized\u2014but the <em>risk<\/em> of speaking up. So, you think about this little girl\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I mean, when you are a teenager\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> \u2014your social life is it! So, she would lose that. You think about women\u2014you know, women, who have jobs who are being sexually harassed at work. Are they going to speak up, or are they going to lose their job? Are they going to risk that? People stay silent because they are afraid, and people also stay silent because people say they don\u2019t believe them. A national broadcaster, was just accused of sexual harassment\u2014a group of seven women came out for the woman who accused him\u2014they came out and said she was not telling the truth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy would anyone go, then, and tell?\u2014if you\u2019re going to be, not only eaten alive by the media, but you\u2019re going to be eaten alive by other women, which is hard enough as it is. The reality is\u2014two things\u2014one: When you have trauma in your body, you\u2019re re-traumatized every time this thing is brought up. I know many women, who have been sexually assaulted; and every time they read a story about MeToo or every time they hear a story, they are reliving some of it in their body.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf anyone is listening\u2014and that is you\u2014I encourage you to be able to get the help you need so that the trauma doesn\u2019t have to live in your body; but also, that you have to tell someone. That telling someone your story \/ telling somebody what happened does change the course of your life; because you now have a voice \/ you now are being seen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, that woman who I saw at the airport\u2014it reminded me a lot of myself. A lot of what I see happening with women\u2014all we really want\u2014and this is men too\u2014we just want to be seen. We want somebody to see us\u2014not to be seen like I want to be seen as famous and this great author\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014acknowledged. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; like: \u201cI see you,\u201d\u2014I put my phone down; I look you in the eyes; I want to hear your story\u2014\u201cI see you.\u201d That\u2019s what Jesus did; right? He <em>saw<\/em> people. He took time with them and <em>saw<\/em> them. Then, the next step is, then, asking people: \u201cHelp me understand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHelp me understand your story.\u201d Instead of jumping to this \u201cI don\u2019t agree,\u201d or \u201cThis is wrong!\u201d or \u201cThis isn\u2019t biblical!\u201d How about just, \u201cHelp me understand\u201d?\u2014which is a very gentle and loving way to help somebody feel seen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The Bible is filled with all kinds of stories about relationships.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Where you have you relationships, you\u2019re ultimately going to have conflict. Where there is conflict, there has to be some kind of resolution of asking for forgiveness and granting forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You tell a story in your book about an older woman\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201479 years old\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014about how she forgave someone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; Carolyn\u2014amazing woman. I had all these judgments about her when I met her, which is funny. Here I am\u2014I\u2019m trying to talk about loving people\u2014and I\u2019m sitting next to her at this conference\u2014and I\u2019m like: \u201cOh, she\u2019s probably this and that,\u201d and \u201c\u2026this and that.\u201d As I got to know her, she shared her story with me; and I was just <em>blown away<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe had worked at a place for people with AIDS. She had to change their diapers and had to help them in their daily living. She had judgments about these people and had all these thoughts and opinions. She wanted to come in there and save them. She quickly realized that she could learn a lot from them. She learned a lot about grace, and loving people, and just holding their hand. She taught me a lot in telling me those stories of what it was like for her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was a judge\u2014she was a federal judge. She came in there, wanting to be Jesus for these people, which is\u2014there is nothing wrong with that\u2014but what she found was it was through relationship and through loving these people that she saw Jesus. It was pretty profound to hear her story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You tell a story, as well, about a young woman who went back to Vietnam\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to find her home; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; and her story\u2014if I could write a book about her whole story, I would. As I was interviewing her\u2014her story is fascinating. She didn\u2019t even know that her family was still alive in Vietnam. She was adopted into the United States at a very young age. They had been on TV shows, out in Vietnam, like: \u201cFind your relative,\u201d\u2014all this stuff. Anyway, they ended up finding her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe piece about her story\u2014that wasn\u2019t the story\u2014the story was\u2014is that she grew up in a white, Caucasian, Norwegian family. She thought she was white and Caucasian for most of her life. It\u2019s so funny how you think a story is a story. Then, as I got to know her, I\u2019m like: \u201cWait. You saw pictures; right? You saw pictures of your family and realized you were Asian.\u201d She\u2019s like, \u201cI saw pictures, but I thought I was Caucasian and white.\u201d Her crisis of faith was when she finally realized, in high school: \u201cI\u2019m not this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m something else. How do I become this?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s very similar to what I was talking about of my own life: \u201cAm I going to be the person that the world wants me to be?\u201d or \u201cAm I going to step into the person that God created me to be?\u201d As women, we think there\u2019s not enough room for us, especially women authors and speakers: \u201cOh, there is not enough room for me. Somebody else is already doing that,\u201d or \u201cSomebody else is already like that,\u201d or \u201cSomebody else has already achieved that.\u201d Then, we back off: \u201cOh, I shouldn\u2019t do that. There are people already doing that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we don\u2019t realize is that God created every single one of us unique. So, how God created me\u2014my take on it, which is unique\u2014there is room for all of us. I have found\u2014in part of my learning through all of this is\u2014when I start to realize, \u201cThere\u2019s room for her, and there is room for me,\u201d it takes out jealousy; because, when I believe there is room for us\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and we don\u2019t live in this scarcity mentality\u2014then, I can cheer her on. I\u2019m no longer jealous; I\u2019m no longer envying her; I\u2019m no longer looking at Instagram and going, \u201cI wish I had what she had.\u201d I\u2019m saying, \u201cHere\u2019s my life, and that\u2019s hers.\u201d Then, I make it for myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnytime, I have a cooling or a little bit of jealousy, I then cheer her on\u2014I say: \u201cYou go, girl. What you\u2019re doing is amazing.\u201d Then, it takes the jealousy away. God has created all of us so that there is room for all of us and a path for every one of us. Mine is not the same as hers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Lee, you shared a little bit with us about your eating disorder. You wrote a book\/a memoir about your eating disorder. You also, at one point, in your life\u2014you were ready to end it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; actually, I did. I attempted suicide, which is not always a subject that everyone wants to talk about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No; I just want to affirm you\u2014suicide is far more common\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in the Christian community and, as far as that goes, the nation is aware of. I think, if people don\u2019t tell their stories, they don\u2019t give people the freedom to come out of the darkness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014of depression\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and admit what they are being tempted to do. I\u2019m glad you did tell your story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Well, thank you very much. I\u2019m very lucky to be alive. I tried to take my own life; I was in a deep depression. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You were not married at the time? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Nope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Were you dating Chris? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> I was dating Chris; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did he know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> He knew I was in a deep depression. He did not know that I was going to take my life. I was pretty serious about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo many people had told me: \u201cIf you would just pray, you\u2019d be healed.\u201d Yet, I still felt miserable. I still had a real deep, clinical depression. My eating disorder\u2014most of it\u2014was because of the depression of just\u2014I didn\u2019t want to eat; I didn\u2019t want to take care of myself. I felt great shame and embarrassment that I couldn\u2019t get out of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I was like, \u201cGod must not love, because I am not healed; so then, why should I live?\u201d\u2014which is totally wrong theology. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> It was totally Satan just really messing with my brain. I started\u2014I took multiple pills, was pretty adamant, packed things in boxes\u2014did all the usual things that people do when they\u2019re going to end their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy husband\u2014well, my husband Chris, who I was dating at the time\u2014woke up in the middle of the night and had this feeling that something was wrong, which is crazy. I believe it is Divine intervention. He woke up in the middle of the night, came to the house I was at\u2014I was a nanny\u2014and he banged on the door\u2014you know, banging on the door. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, he drove somewhere. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; it was about four in the morning, banging on the door. The mom came down and she said, \u201cWhat are you doing?!\u201d He said: \u201cThere is something wrong with Lee. I know there is something wrong with Lee.\u201d I gave him <em>no<\/em> indication whatsoever. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey ran up, and they found me lying in a pool of my own vomit. I proceeded to be in the ICU for three days. Basically, all the doctors were like: \u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable that he found you when he did, or you would have been dead. The chances of you having children \/ the chances of you really recovering fully from this are very slim.\u201d Ha-ha\u2014but not with a God so big as ours\u2014right? I say that because I have three beautiful kids. I do feel like I\u2019m fully recovered from the eating disorder; depression still rears its ugly head every so often. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe point of that is\u2014I really, at that point in time\u2014I really had this moment with God in the ICU, where He reminded me of the man by the pool in John 5. The man by the pool\u2014you know, he\u2019s lying there 38 years; and he\u2019s saying: \u201cOh, God, nobody will help me. Nobody will help me. All these people get in the pool, but nobody will help me get in the pool.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod\u2019s like, \u201cPick up your mat and walk.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt this point in my life, God was saying\u2014<em>not<\/em> \u201cI\u2019m not going to heal you,\u201d\u2014but \u201cLee, I don\u2019t force you to do things,\u201d and \u201cLee, you have to do your part. You have to pick up your mat and walk.\u201d It was at that point in my life that I started doing the things that I needed to do for recovery. Then, God met me there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe whole time, now, I look back\u2014God is saying: \u201cI love you. I don\u2019t want you living like this, but you won\u2019t come to Me. I\u2019m just waiting \/ waiting for you, Lee, to come to Me.\u201d He said, \u201cPick up your mat and walk\u201d; and I started walking, and I\u2019m not walking back to that pool for sure. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019m glad you let our listeners in on that story, because\u2014you mentioned this earlier\u2014you kept talking about people who weren\u2019t convinced their life matters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Your life does matter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs you were telling your story, I couldn\u2019t help but think of Ephesians, Chapter 2, verse 10\u2014it says, right after, it says, \u201cWe have been saved by grace through faith.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We can\u2019t boast about it. It\u2019s God\u2019s love that changes our lives and makes us a new person. It says in verse 10, \u201cFor we\u201d\u2014you, Lee\u2014\u201care His workmanship.\u201d The concept of workmanship means God\u2019s work of art. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> That\u2019s so beautiful! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As you were sharing that story, I was thinking: \u201cGod made a work of art that He was not done displaying\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cin His creation. He loved you so much. He woke your future husband up; and he had to forego the humiliation and the shame of going and knocking at somebody\u2019s door, at four in the morning,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cto rescue the work of art.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s the work of art supposed to do? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, it goes on and says this: \u201cCreated in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.\u201d He has hard-wired you with a spiritual DNA to use you for this generation, and He loved you so much that He wouldn\u2019t let you perish\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014not only spiritually, by dying for you\u2014but also, physically perish and shorten your life when He still has something for you to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got a book for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Well, great. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay? Let me reach over here and get it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> While you\u2019re doing that, I would say that I believe He has that for everyone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lee:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think just being a speaker and writer is it. You know, God has a plan for everyone, and He\u2019ll save\u2014He\u2019ll go to the ends of the earth for <em>all <\/em>of us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Ephesians 2 is a verse for everybody [who is a believer]. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Everyone is His workmanship\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014everyone is created in Christ Jesus for good works, which He prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. That\u2019s not just a select group. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Exactly. I still had a real, deep clinical depression; and my eating disorder\u2014most of it\u2014was because of the depression of just\u2014I didn\u2019t want to eat; I didn\u2019t want to take care of myself. I felt great shame and embarrassment that I couldn\u2019t get out of it. Then, I was like, \u201cWell, God must not love me, because I\u2019m not healed; so then, why should I live?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, October 12<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine. When we have friends or family members, who are in a hard place like Lee Blum was in, do we know how to help? If we find ourselves in that place, how can we be brave? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ll talk more about that today. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. Do you remember a book that came out when we were back in school? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You remember <em>one<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I do! I do! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just one. I\u2019m thinking\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I read it in the first grade. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I had to read it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You did not read this one in the first grade. This is a book that I think won the Pulitzer Prize. It was written by a president, but it captured the imagination of a nation. It was the book, <em>Profiles\u2014<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014<em>in Courage<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> <em>\u2014in Courage<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014by JFK. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; John F. Kennedy wrote a book where he told us stories of courageous people. I think we were a nation, then\u2014and maybe a nation today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that needs to hear stories of courageous people; because, as you\u2019ve quoted\u2014who is it that said, \u201cWhen one person is courageous, the spines of others stiffen\u201d?\u2014who said that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Billy Graham. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And JFK made the statement\u2014this won\u2019t be exactly as he said it in the book, <em>Profiles in Courage<\/em>\u2014but he made the statement that some men\/some women sail with the wind until the events of the day propel them into the center of a storm. And it\u2019s back to the idea that the book is written about great men and women, who displayed profiles of being courageous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a guest with us today, Lee Wolfe Blum, who has written a book called <em>Brave Is the New Beautiful<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you\u2019re\u2014do you think of yourself as a brave person? [Laughter]I mean, that\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, come on! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> That\u2019s a longer question. [Laughter] I can answer that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Come on\u2014be truthful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve had to confront your fears\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and to embrace bravery; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Oh, absolutely; or I wouldn\u2019t have written the book. I always feel like everything that I try\u2014and anything that I speak about or write about\u2014is always something that I feel like God is teaching me. Otherwise, I\u2019d feel like I don\u2019t have any authority over it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould I say I\u2019m brave? I would say, \u201cYes; now, I can say I\u2019m brave.\u201d I\u2019m almost 46, so it\u2019s taken me this long; but the bravest thing that I have to do every day is be the person that God made me to be. I say that because, as I mentioned before, I grew up in a verbally-abusive home and live in a culture now\u2014that we all live in\u2014where there is this idea that I\u2019m supposed to be one way; right? There is this idea that the Lee that I\u2019m supposed to be is all these voices of my past \/ all these voices of the world. So, for me, the bravest thing that I can do is not listen to that and step into who God has made me to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s hard for me; because I very easily can get stuck in shame\u2014and a deep, deep pit of shame. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>The more I reach into Scripture, and the more I <em>believe<\/em> God and what He says, the more I can step out and do the things that God has called me to do. For me, I\u2019m not afraid to get on stage. I was the Easter bunny in the mall one year\u2014I\u2019m not afraid of any of those things. What I\u2019m most afraid of is that you\u2019ll know all the parts of me\u2014all the icky parts\u2014but God\u2014and I love this quote by Brennan Manning: \u201cDefine yourself radically as one beloved by God. This is the true self. Every other identity is an illusion.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I start to get either full of shame\u2014or even full of pride\u2014I start to remember that\u2014like: \u201cGod calls me the beloved. God loves me.\u201d I feel we need to shout that <em>everywhere<\/em>\u2014our teenagers need to hear it; the elderly need to hear it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe need to <em>shout<\/em> out people\u2019s worth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve become a culture that has just\u2014especially on Twitter<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and the internet\u2014we just immediately attack each other and eat each other alive. As I mentioned before, you never know what somebody is going through. Instead, let\u2019s shout\u2014let\u2019s shout out each other\u2019s worth. Let\u2019s say: \u201cYou\u2019re the beloved. You are loved by God!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think sometimes, Bob, our courage factor needs to be poked on a little bit, which Lee does in her book, just to get us to step out and engage other people\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014who are hurting, who have messed up, and who need a friend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, one of the ways, Lee, that you do that in the book, <em>Brave Is the New Beautiful<\/em>, is you draw pictures for us. You paint portraits of women\u2014who you\u2019ve met \/ women whose stories you know\u2014who have modeled bravery\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014like the story of Amy, who was sexually abused by a gymnastics coach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve read a lot about this in the papers; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. Right; right. Amy\u2014this happened years ago; she\u2019s a grown adult now. Amy, at first, didn\u2019t want to come out and say that this had happened; because the culture she was in was starting to pick sides. She was a young 12-year-old little girl, and she didn\u2019t want to come out and say this happened; but then, eventually, she did report what happened. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> She ended up having to be on stand for <em>five hours<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014as a 12-year-old? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> \u2014as a 12-year-old\u2014for five hours, staring him in the eyes\u2014that is unbelievable bravery! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I interviewed this girl, Amy\u2014she is now in her 20s\u2014she was like, \u201cYes; it was really hard, but it\u2019s what I did \/ it\u2019s what I needed to do.\u201d That changed the trajectory of her life. Sometimes, acting out in those scary things can completely change the trajectory of our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat it did for her is\u2014she was no longer holding the trauma in her body. She was using her voice to speak what was true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve read these stories, as I\u2019ve said, of women on the Michigan State gymnastics team\u2014and women who were abused beyond that scope. Many of these women were silent about their abuse for decades. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Why would so many not say: \u201cHang on! This is wrong. This happened to me\u201d? Why the silence? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> That\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> question\u2014and one of my favorite questions\u2014because, as I mentioned, the book was called <em>Me Too<\/em>; and now, it\u2019s not. I often get interviews to talk about this MeToo movement and, especially, the MeToo movement in the church\u2014it\u2019s happening. We cannot deny that it is now affecting the American church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>The reason why people stay silent is\u2014you have to understand what happens to the body when it is traumatized\u2014not only when it\u2019s traumatized\u2014but the <em>risk<\/em> of speaking up. So, you think about this little girl\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I mean, when you are a teenager\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> \u2014your social life is it! So, she would lose that. You think about women\u2014you know, women, who have jobs who are being sexually harassed at work. Are they going to speak up, or are they going to lose their job? Are they going to risk that? People stay silent because they are afraid, and people also stay silent because people say they don\u2019t believe them. A national broadcaster, was just accused of sexual harassment\u2014a group of seven women came out for the woman who accused him\u2014they came out and said she was not telling the truth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy would anyone go, then, and tell?\u2014if you\u2019re going to be, not only eaten alive by the media, but you\u2019re going to be eaten alive by other women, which is hard enough as it is. The reality is\u2014two things\u2014one: When you have trauma in your body, you\u2019re re-traumatized every time this thing is brought up. I know many women, who have been sexually assaulted; and every time they read a story about MeToo or every time they hear a story, they are reliving some of it in their body.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf anyone is listening\u2014and that is you\u2014I encourage you to be able to get the help you need so that the trauma doesn\u2019t have to live in your body; but also, that you have to tell someone. That telling someone your story \/ telling somebody what happened does change the course of your life; because you now have a voice \/ you now are being seen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, that woman who I saw at the airport\u2014it reminded me a lot of myself. A lot of what I see happening with women\u2014all we really want\u2014and this is men too\u2014we just want to be seen. We want somebody to see us\u2014not to be seen like I want to be seen as famous and this great author\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014acknowledged. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; like: \u201cI see you,\u201d\u2014I put my phone down; I look you in the eyes; I want to hear your story\u2014\u201cI see you.\u201d That\u2019s what Jesus did; right? He <em>saw<\/em> people. He took time with them and <em>saw<\/em> them. Then, the next step is, then, asking people: \u201cHelp me understand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHelp me understand your story.\u201d Instead of jumping to this \u201cI don\u2019t agree,\u201d or \u201cThis is wrong!\u201d or \u201cThis isn\u2019t biblical!\u201d How about just, \u201cHelp me understand\u201d?\u2014which is a very gentle and loving way to help somebody feel seen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The Bible is filled with all kinds of stories about relationships.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Where you have you relationships, you\u2019re ultimately going to have conflict. Where there is conflict, there has to be some kind of resolution of asking for forgiveness and granting forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You tell a story in your book about an older woman\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201479 years old\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014about how she forgave someone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; Carolyn\u2014amazing woman. I had all these judgments about her when I met her, which is funny. Here I am\u2014I\u2019m trying to talk about loving people\u2014and I\u2019m sitting next to her at this conference\u2014and I\u2019m like: \u201cOh, she\u2019s probably this and that,\u201d and \u201c\u2026this and that.\u201d As I got to know her, she shared her story with me; and I was just <em>blown away<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe had worked at a place for people with AIDS. She had to change their diapers and had to help them in their daily living. She had judgments about these people and had all these thoughts and opinions. She wanted to come in there and save them. She quickly realized that she could learn a lot from them. She learned a lot about grace, and loving people, and just holding their hand. She taught me a lot in telling me those stories of what it was like for her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was a judge\u2014she was a federal judge. She came in there, wanting to be Jesus for these people, which is\u2014there is nothing wrong with that\u2014but what she found was it was through relationship and through loving these people that she saw Jesus. It was pretty profound to hear her story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> You tell a story, as well, about a young woman who went back to Vietnam\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to find her home; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; and her story\u2014if I could write a book about her whole story, I would. As I was interviewing her\u2014her story is fascinating. She didn\u2019t even know that her family was still alive in Vietnam. She was adopted into the United States at a very young age. They had been on TV shows, out in Vietnam, like: \u201cFind your relative,\u201d\u2014all this stuff. Anyway, they ended up finding her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe piece about her story\u2014that wasn\u2019t the story\u2014the story was\u2014is that she grew up in a white, Caucasian, Norwegian family. She thought she was white and Caucasian for most of her life. It\u2019s so funny how you think a story is a story. Then, as I got to know her, I\u2019m like: \u201cWait. You saw pictures; right? You saw pictures of your family and realized you were Asian.\u201d She\u2019s like, \u201cI saw pictures, but I thought I was Caucasian and white.\u201d Her crisis of faith was when she finally realized, in high school: \u201cI\u2019m not this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m something else. How do I become this?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s very similar to what I was talking about of my own life: \u201cAm I going to be the person that the world wants me to be?\u201d or \u201cAm I going to step into the person that God created me to be?\u201d As women, we think there\u2019s not enough room for us, especially women authors and speakers: \u201cOh, there is not enough room for me. Somebody else is already doing that,\u201d or \u201cSomebody else is already like that,\u201d or \u201cSomebody else has already achieved that.\u201d Then, we back off: \u201cOh, I shouldn\u2019t do that. There are people already doing that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we don\u2019t realize is that God created every single one of us unique. So, how God created me\u2014my take on it, which is unique\u2014there is room for all of us. I have found\u2014in part of my learning through all of this is\u2014when I start to realize, \u201cThere\u2019s room for her, and there is room for me,\u201d it takes out jealousy; because, when I believe there is room for us\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and we don\u2019t live in this scarcity mentality\u2014then, I can cheer her on. I\u2019m no longer jealous; I\u2019m no longer envying her; I\u2019m no longer looking at Instagram and going, \u201cI wish I had what she had.\u201d I\u2019m saying, \u201cHere\u2019s my life, and that\u2019s hers.\u201d Then, I make it for myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnytime, I have a cooling or a little bit of jealousy, I then cheer her on\u2014I say: \u201cYou go, girl. What you\u2019re doing is amazing.\u201d Then, it takes the jealousy away. God has created all of us so that there is room for all of us and a path for every one of us. Mine is not the same as hers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Lee, you shared a little bit with us about your eating disorder. You wrote a book\/a memoir about your eating disorder. You also, at one point, in your life\u2014you were ready to end it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; actually, I did. I attempted suicide, which is not always a subject that everyone wants to talk about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No; I just want to affirm you\u2014suicide is far more common\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in the Christian community and, as far as that goes, the nation is aware of. I think, if people don\u2019t tell their stories, they don\u2019t give people the freedom to come out of the darkness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014of depression\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and admit what they are being tempted to do. I\u2019m glad you did tell your story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Well, thank you very much. I\u2019m very lucky to be alive. I tried to take my own life; I was in a deep depression. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You were not married at the time? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Nope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Were you dating Chris? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> I was dating Chris; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did he know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> He knew I was in a deep depression. He did not know that I was going to take my life. I was pretty serious about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo many people had told me: \u201cIf you would just pray, you\u2019d be healed.\u201d Yet, I still felt miserable. I still had a real deep, clinical depression. My eating disorder\u2014most of it\u2014was because of the depression of just\u2014I didn\u2019t want to eat; I didn\u2019t want to take care of myself. I felt great shame and embarrassment that I couldn\u2019t get out of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I was like, \u201cGod must not love, because I am not healed; so then, why should I live?\u201d\u2014which is totally wrong theology. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> It was totally Satan just really messing with my brain. I started\u2014I took multiple pills, was pretty adamant, packed things in boxes\u2014did all the usual things that people do when they\u2019re going to end their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy husband\u2014well, my husband Chris, who I was dating at the time\u2014woke up in the middle of the night and had this feeling that something was wrong, which is crazy. I believe it is Divine intervention. He woke up in the middle of the night, came to the house I was at\u2014I was a nanny\u2014and he banged on the door\u2014you know, banging on the door. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, he drove somewhere. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; it was about four in the morning, banging on the door. The mom came down and she said, \u201cWhat are you doing?!\u201d He said: \u201cThere is something wrong with Lee. I know there is something wrong with Lee.\u201d I gave him <em>no<\/em> indication whatsoever. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey ran up, and they found me lying in a pool of my own vomit. I proceeded to be in the ICU for three days. Basically, all the doctors were like: \u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable that he found you when he did, or you would have been dead. The chances of you having children \/ the chances of you really recovering fully from this are very slim.\u201d Ha-ha\u2014but not with a God so big as ours\u2014right? I say that because I have three beautiful kids. I do feel like I\u2019m fully recovered from the eating disorder; depression still rears its ugly head every so often. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe point of that is\u2014I really, at that point in time\u2014I really had this moment with God in the ICU, where He reminded me of the man by the pool in John 5. The man by the pool\u2014you know, he\u2019s lying there 38 years; and he\u2019s saying: \u201cOh, God, nobody will help me. Nobody will help me. All these people get in the pool, but nobody will help me get in the pool.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod\u2019s like, \u201cPick up your mat and walk.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt this point in my life, God was saying\u2014<em>not<\/em> \u201cI\u2019m not going to heal you,\u201d\u2014but \u201cLee, I don\u2019t force you to do things,\u201d and \u201cLee, you have to do your part. You have to pick up your mat and walk.\u201d It was at that point in my life that I started doing the things that I needed to do for recovery. Then, God met me there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe whole time, now, I look back\u2014God is saying: \u201cI love you. I don\u2019t want you living like this, but you won\u2019t come to Me. I\u2019m just waiting \/ waiting for you, Lee, to come to Me.\u201d He said, \u201cPick up your mat and walk\u201d; and I started walking, and I\u2019m not walking back to that pool for sure. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019m glad you let our listeners in on that story, because\u2014you mentioned this earlier\u2014you kept talking about people who weren\u2019t convinced their life matters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Your life does matter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs you were telling your story, I couldn\u2019t help but think of Ephesians, Chapter 2, verse 10\u2014it says, right after, it says, \u201cWe have been saved by grace through faith.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We can\u2019t boast about it. It\u2019s God\u2019s love that changes our lives and makes us a new person. It says in verse 10, \u201cFor we\u201d\u2014you, Lee\u2014\u201care His workmanship.\u201d The concept of workmanship means God\u2019s work of art. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> That\u2019s so beautiful! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As you were sharing that story, I was thinking: \u201cGod made a work of art that He was not done displaying\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cin His creation. He loved you so much. He woke your future husband up; and he had to forego the humiliation and the shame of going and knocking at somebody\u2019s door, at four in the morning,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cto rescue the work of art.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s the work of art supposed to do? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, it goes on and says this: \u201cCreated in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.\u201d He has hard-wired you with a spiritual DNA to use you for this generation, and He loved you so much that He wouldn\u2019t let you perish\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014not only spiritually, by dying for you\u2014but also, physically perish and shorten your life when He still has something for you to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got a book for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Well, great. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay? Let me reach over here and get it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> While you\u2019re doing that, I would say that I believe He has that for everyone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lee:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think just being a speaker and writer is it. You know, God has a plan for everyone, and He\u2019ll save\u2014He\u2019ll go to the ends of the earth for <em>all <\/em>of us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Ephesians 2 is a verse for everybody [who is a believer]. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Everyone is His workmanship\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014everyone is created in Christ Jesus for good works, which He prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. That\u2019s not just a select group. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lee:<\/strong> Exactly.
