But I felt like God said to me, \u201cInstead of trying to get laughs from people, I want you to <em>give<\/em> them the opportunity to laugh.\u201d This changed everything! Because now I\u2019m not looking to take anything; I\u2019m just looking for an opportunity to <em>give<\/em>. <\/a><\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when an opportunity to go to a homeless shelter or abused children facility\u2014when it showed it up\u2014I would think to myself, \u201cThis is an opportunity for me to <em>give<\/em> laughter.\u201d It doesn\u2019t have anything to do with how they respond\u2014they laugh every time. But that\u2019s not why I\u2019m there. I\u2019m there to <em>give<\/em> them an opportunity, even if they don\u2019t laugh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEveryone has a gift. Most of the time, we\u2019re giving the gift to see some sort of response. But the truth is\u2014your job is simply to present the gift.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, October 10<sup>th<\/sup>. We were all scheduled to talk about something pretty serious today\/pretty sober; and then, I walk in here and see who you\u2019re hanging out with. I go: \u201cWell, there goes that plan. We are not going to get to our serious topic today.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what\u2019s really kind of funny to me is that we\u2019ve got a guest, who\u2019s been on FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> before, and I don\u2019t know what his last name is. [Laughter] I only know him as Michael Jr.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, is Jr. your last name?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; unless you say it backwards.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And then it\u2019s Ra\u2014Raj; Raj. I can\u2019t even say it backwards. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> It\u2019s just Jr. Michael. [Laughter] Yes; why do you have to make it more complex?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was trying to come up with Riahjo. I was trying to get junior backwards; I couldn\u2019t do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Our paths first crossed\u2014what?\u2014half a dozen years ago at the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Michael performed onboard; and how shall we say?\u2014it\u2019s all been history. The lines, going back to the rooms where he performs, is actually a problem; because, if you\u2019re speaking, they will leave your message early to go get in line to\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to hear Michael Jr.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014to hear Michael Jr. and his comedy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and folks who have started watching the <em>Art of Parenting<\/em>\u2122 are seeing Michael pop up, periodically, with some sage parenting wisdom that you shared with our audience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Impromptu stuff\u2014you guys are so cool\u2014like you said: \u201cHey, we\u2019ve got this crazy idea. While you are on the cruise, we\u2019re going to film you,\u201d\u2014completely improv. Nothing was prepared, except for the team; but <em>nothing<\/em> was scheduled. We just let people ask questions about parenting. And funny\u2014just\u2014it just kind of happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it was dope\u2014it was really dope! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> So let me explain what just happened here. [Laughter] So before\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was a set up. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> So before we went on air, I said the word, \u201cdope.\u201d Dennis was like, \u201cDid you call me a dope?!\u201d \u201cNo; no.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I thought he called my book a dope! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> No; dope means that something is efficient\u2014it\u2019s nice; it\u2019s clean; it\u2019s smooth; it\u2019s cool. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were talking about Dennis\u2019s book, <em>Interviewing Your Daughter\u2019s Date\u2014<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014which you actually used; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; I read the book\u2014I used the tactics.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What was it like the first time you interviewed a guy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> \u2014for a job position?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No; to take your daughter out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> It was a little\u2014I was trying not to be super-intimidating or have him be too intimidated, because it\u2019s like\u2014first of all, he\u2019d never heard of such a thing. He thought he could just take her out. I was like: \u201cNo; you actually can\u2019t. We need to sit down.\u201d The dude was tall\u2014he was like 6\u20198\u201d. I\u2019m only 6\u20192.\u201d He\u2019s looking down at me when I\u2019m really looking down at him, so it was kind of cool. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Is this the guy you share about in the <em>Art of Parenting<\/em>?\u2014because you say you asked the question: \u201cOn a scale of 1-10\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes, yes; I said to him: \u201cSo, on a scale of 1 to 10, where do you think my daughter is spiritually?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was like, \u201cShe\u2019s probably\u2014she\u2019s like an 8.\u201d He has some kind of accent: \u201cShe\u2019s like an 8.\u201d I was like, \u201cMm, yeah; she\u2019s not an 8 right now.\u201d [Laughter] I didn\u2019t say that\u2014I didn\u2019t say that to him\u2014but I just wanted to get a gage for where\u2014so I said, \u201cWhere do you feel like you are?\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019m probably a 5.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI explained to him\u2014I said: \u201cSo she\u2019s an 8; you\u2019re a 5. So you play basketball; right? You play forward\u2014going to college.\u201d I said: \u201cWhat happens to your game, if you are an 8, and you play \/ you practice against somebody who is a 5? What happens to your game if that\u2019s who you practice against?\u201d He said, \u201cIt goes down.\u201d I said \u201c<em>Yeah<\/em>, it does.\u201d [Laughter] I said: \u201cThis date thing is probably not going to work out;\u201d\u2014at all, really\u2014\u201cbut you\u2019re a nice guy.\u201d \u201cAwesome.\u201d \u201cHope your basketball career goes great,\u201d and then\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cBut you\u2019re not going out with my daughter.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes: \u201cYou\u2019re not going out with her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And your daughter said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Well, I just told her he wasn\u2019t dope. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then\u2014so we had to move on, and she was cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s another thing I did with my daughters is\u2014this is when they had voice mail and they would use it\u2014I recorded her voicemail greeting. If you call my daughter\u2019s phone, it says: \u201cHello; thank you for calling\u201d\u2014like one of my daughters\u2019 name is Cheryl\u2014\"Thanks for calling Cheryl\u2019s phone. If you don\u2019t have plans to help her follow God\u2019s purpose, hang up now. If you do, leave a message; she\u2019ll call you back. If you have any questions at all about this greeting, you can call me at\u2026\"\u2014I would leave my phone number. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat this does\u2014it sets a tone, where there\u2019s a gatekeeper. We didn\u2019t need funny.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t think he could handle it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t need funny in the last session as we talked about \u201cWhat the Purpose of Parenting Is,\u201d but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Is that all I am to you is funny?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No; let me just say, \u201cYou are <em>more<\/em> than funny.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a nice segue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Well, a <em>segue<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How is that for a segue?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And explain to our listeners why Bob said it that way\u2014\u201c<em>more<\/em> than funny.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Well, that just happens to be the name of my movie that\u2019s in theaters next week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> A Fathom event\u2014one night only\u2014it\u2019s called <em>More Than Funny<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It is Thursday night next week. When I travel the country, I\u2019m doing comedy; but\u2014so let\u2019s say I\u2019m presenting joke number one; and then, normally, what would happen\u2014I would start doing the math on what I think joke number two should be, based off how you\u2019re currently responding to joke number one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, once I have that one confirmed, I move on to joke number three, joke number four. I will go seven-jokes deep, even though I\u2019m still presenting the first joke. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I met Jesus; right?\u2014and He wanted to talk between the jokes. [Laughter] So now, I can\u2019t go seven deep anymore; because I\u2019m listening in between the jokes and asking the question, \u201cWhat can I give this audience?\u201d He\u2019ll say to me\u2014like I feel like there are certain things I should do or certain things I should say\u2014and that\u2019s actually the <em>more<\/em> in between the jokes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason we\u2019re calling it <em>More Than Funny<\/em> is\u2014people will show up \/ a lot of non-Christians will show up, because they think it\u2019s <em>extra<\/em> funny. It is; but it\u2019s really, <em>more than funny<\/em>. So there\u2019s three stories that we share in the middle of these jokes, via video, of some really inspiring\u2014you guys watched this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve seen it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> \u2014yes; and there\u2019s some really inspiring stories right in the middle. So people laugh\u2014they\u2019re emotionally\u2014like their hearts are open; it\u2019s really, really cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The purpose of the stories\u2014and I love this\u2014it\u2019s not just to tell stories that are inspiring; but it\u2019s to tell stories that will get people to go: \u201cI could do something like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael: <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI can take what God\u2019s given me\u2014my gifts, my talents, my abilities\u2014I can leverage them for Kingdom purposes.\u201d If all of us were just thinking, intentionally, that way a little more often, that would have a <em>huge<\/em> impact on what\u2019s going on in the culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wanted to ask you, Michael, was it intimidating for you to go into a homeless shelter and do comedy? I mean, I know you\u2019re a professional; but you\u2019re walking into a group of people, who for the most part, their DNA is hopelessness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And humor and hopelessness\u2014I just kind of wonder: \u201cWhat were you thinking and feeling at that point?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> The homeless shelter was hard. Prisons\u2014I do comedy\u2014I did a couple of prisons as well\u2014captive audience. [Laughter] But a homeless shelter\u2014so what happened\u2014the reason I\u2019m able to do these events is because I had a shift in mindset. Where most comedians, most of the time\u2014myself included\u2014it was all about getting laughs from people. But I felt like God said to me, \u201cInstead of trying to get laughs from people, I want you to <em>give<\/em> them the opportunity to laugh.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis changed everything! Because now I\u2019m not looking to take anything; I\u2019m just looking for an opportunity to <em>give<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo when an opportunity to go to a homeless shelter or abused children facility\u2014when it showed it up, I would think to myself \u201cThis is an opportunity for me to <em>give<\/em> laughter.\u201d It doesn\u2019t\u2019 have anything to do with how they respond\u2014they laugh every time. But that\u2019s not why I\u2019m there. I\u2019m there to <em>give<\/em> them an opportunity, even if they don\u2019t laugh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEveryone has a gift. Most of the time, we\u2019re giving the gift to see some sort of response. But the truth is\u2014your job is simply to present the gift. It doesn\u2019t have anything to do with how they respond to it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was talking to this mechanic at one of my shows\u2014I was like, \u201cWhat do you do?\u201d He says, \u201cWell, I\u2019m a mechanic.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d He said, \u201cThat means I get paid to fix cars.\u201d I was like, \u201cOkay.\u201d So we start talking a little bit; by the end of our conversation, his statement was: \u201cI help insure that people reach their desired destination.\u201d That will put your alarm clock out of business; the other will cause you to hit snooze. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo this comedy special is funny\u2014it\u2019s the same type of comedy I\u2019ve done on the <em>Tonight Show<\/em>, <em>Comedy Central<\/em>\u2014all of these television shows. It\u2019s the same type of comedy, but it\u2019s <em>more<\/em> than just funny. So we want people to come laugh. The cool part is\u2014Christians can bring their non-Christian friends and say \u201cHey, watch this.\u201d They get to see Christians laughing at some legit comedy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd don\u2019t be creepy when you invite them. Why do, sometimes, Christians\u2014their voice changes when they go [sounding like an insecure person], \u201cDo you want to go to the movies with me?\u201d What are you doing?! <a id=\"_Hlk526008370\">[Laughter]<\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The first joke I ever heard you tell\u2014and it was an adlib joke\u2014we\u2019ve talked about this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Oh my goodness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were onboard the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise. I was introducing you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right beforehand, I gave an announcement\u2014I said: \u201cWe\u2019ve got a silent auction that\u2019s taking place onboard the boat. We\u2019re raising money for something here. You can go up tonight, and look at the items, and make a bid. It\u2019s all happening on the ninth deck\u2014it\u2019s in the Plantation Lounge. You go up and take part in that\u201d; and then, I introduced you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWithout missing a beat, you walked out; and you said: \u201cI\u2019m a little scared right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBecause I\u2019m a black man, on a boat in the ocean\u2019 and I just found out there\u2019s an auction in the Plantation Lounge.\u201d <a id=\"_Hlk526012808\">[Laughter]<\/a> We all rolled, but I\u2019ve watched you skillfully navigate the whole racial issue in comedy in a way that is disarming with people. Sometimes, I think: \u201cHow does he\u201d\u2014like you do a thing in the movie\u2014that we\u2019ll see next Thursday night in theaters\u2014where you talk about the difference between white people\u2019s dogs and black people\u2019s dogs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Hysterical. [Laughter] Listen, I\u2019m not saying this is funny\u2014because there\u2019s really nothing I do in that\u2014all I do is pull out the <em>truth<\/em>. I just talk about dog names, and it is\u2014I laugh every single night that we do this joke\u2014like I look forward to it! I\u2019m just pointing out some truths that kind of happen, and it\u2019s really\u2014you\u2019ve got to see it, because it\u2019s different every single night. When you go to the movie, wait until I talk about dog names\u2014you\u2019re going to lose it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Does anybody ever come up to you offended with the fact that you go there in terms of racial differences?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> I think the more we can laugh at our differences, the less important they become. It opens up some dialogue around here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did have someone say to me once\u2014I think they saw me on some TV show or whatever\u2014and they said, \u201cI can\u2019t believe you were there, and you never said, \u2018Jesus,\u2019 the whole time.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m sorry. What do you do for a living? Okay; so you work at McDonalds<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. Right after you give them a Big Mac<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, do you say, \u2018Hey, and Jesus loves you\u2019?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike I want everybody in the world to know that I\u2019m a Christian, but I don\u2019t want to have to say it. I want people to say, \u201cMan, there is something going on.\u201d Then, if you check anywhere\u2014anywhere at all\u2014you\u2019re going to find out the truth. My job is to catch them with the comedy and keep them with the truth\u2014not lead with the truth and, then, make them laugh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and you\u2019re never shy about your faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael: <\/strong>No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were telling us, over lunch, as you\u2019ve traveled the country, you\u2019ve had tens of thousands of people, who\u2019ve made a profession of faith, at one of your events.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s pretty overwhelming how many people come forward. My whole goal is, not just for them to make that decision, but we want help people go to the next level and actually walk it out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You believe that comedy just shows up. In fact, you say that in your movie. What I wanted to ask you was: \u201cWhere do you think comedy comes from?\u2014humor\/laughter. Do you believe that was given to us by God?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> That is so awesome. So first, you asked a question\u2014you said, \u201cWhere does it come from?\u201d You paused, but the silence was too much; so then you had to feed me a little bit. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t sure you had the answer there. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> I got something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We don\u2019t want dead air, because Michael Jr. is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> People turn the radio off!\u2014okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> No; they don\u2019t; they actually don\u2019t\u2014no, no, no. It\u2019s more suspenseful if they got <em>nothing<\/em> and like: \u201cI know they\u2019re coming back any second.\u201d So let\u2019s try it again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; so let\u2019s have a pause.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Where do you think laughter comes from, Michael Jr.?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oooh; oooh!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> See\u2014that felt kind of right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Are you there?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> It felt right. [Laughter] I absolutely, unquestionably, know that God has given us that as a release. People always quote Proverbs 17:22: \u201cLaughter is good like a medicine.\u201d But God has given me this gift to understand\u2014like in the <em>midst<\/em> of however dramatic a situation may be, I can find the funny. I\u2019m starting to understand, even more so, when <em>not<\/em> to bring the funny\u2014when to just show up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ll see this in this\u2014when you watch this movie, the funny is there; but there are some stories and some challenges that happen\u2014like there\u2019s <em>no<\/em> comedy special that exists that\u2019s like this. I can say that with all confidence because we made it\/we saw it\u2014like nobody takes these sort of stories. We\u2019re in the woods, with homeless people; and then suddenly, we\u2019re on stage in front of 4,000 people, doing jokes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod has given me an ability, not really just comedy, but really to communicate in a way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI <em>know<\/em> it\u2019s from him. Comedy does show up, but it\u2019s from Him. For me to be able to do this math\u2014this fast and find this funny\u2014it\u2019s absolutely God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t know this about <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014but you know this about Bob and me\u2014we enjoy having fun. When people come up to us and say, \u201cI listen to the broadcast,\u201d they\u2019ll, first of all, say, \u201cThanks for taking us to the Bible.\u201d Secondly, \u201cThanks for being authentic.\u201d But always, within the top three, is laughter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>People want and need to laugh today. They mention that about our broadcast, and I think that\u2019s what you\u2019re doing in this movie. You\u2019re giving people a gift of laughter\u2014having a good time and not doing it in a crass way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> That\u2019s awesome, and it\u2019s not corny. Because a lot of times, when you hear, \u201cChristian,\u201d and you hear, \u201ccomedy,\u201d the visual you got is\u2014people\u2014the next question is: \u201cWhere\u2019s your puppet?\u201d \u201cA puppet? What are you talking about?\u2014a puppet.\u201d [Laughter] \u201cI don\u2019t know\u2014a puppet?\u201d \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cflannel board.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> \u201cWhat are talking about?\u201d \u201cHambo; hambo; ha\u2026\u201d\u2014like: \u201cThat\u2019s not what I\u2019m doing. It\u2019s the legit comedy that you\u2019ll see on late-night television. In fact, if you just Google<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> \u2018Michel Jr.\u2019\u2014not just me\u2014there\u2019s some other really funny comedians out there, whom I won\u2019t name right now; because I need you to go see my movie.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Are you saying you\u2019re never corny?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Not on purpose; I hope not! [Laughter] I might like if I\u2019m working out in the yard\u2014I might get a corn on my hand or something, but I\u2014[Laughter]\u2014yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014not intentionally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> No; not on purpose, because that\u2019s weird.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You filmed this in front of a live audience. They were in on the fact that they were part of the movie; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; they <em>knew<\/em>. We filmed it in Cordova, Tennessee. They knew that we were doing the movie, and they were\u2014it was an <em>awesome<\/em> audience. They are excited about seeing themselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve all seen a comedy special \/ we\u2019ve all seen some inspiring stories; but you don\u2019t get to see them <em>together<\/em> in the middle\u2014like what happens, emotionally, is just really cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your hope is the same as our hope was when we did our movie, <em>Like Arrows,<\/em> in theaters, back last May. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur hope was it would be catalytic\u2014it would be the <em>beginning<\/em> of a parenting journey for moms and dads. Your hope with this special\u2014next Thursday night \/ that\u2019s going to be in theaters one night only\u2014is that this will be catalytic. This is the <em>beginning<\/em> of an adjustment for people to start thinking differently about their punchline; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Absolutely. Are you bringing up Cadillac\u2019s because I\u2019m a black dude? [Laughter] Is that just what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Catalytic is the converter in a Cadillac. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Oh, okay; thank you; thank you. I was like: \u201cWhy is he bringing up\u2014man, I like Toyotas.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes! Yes; there is a really cool, awesome, amazing call to action at the end of this film, where we want to help people help people in a really cool way. We\u2019re creating a platform, where people help people, but not with money. You can\u2019t use money on this platform to help people. We\u2019re going to let everybody know after they see the movie, so go see the movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd on top of that, the proceeds from the movie\u2014because there\u2019s so much stuff going on in the world\u2014we\u2019re doing\u2014the proceeds is going to a black family in America.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yours?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; that was a joke, Dennis! [Laughter] If you say, \u201cYours,\u201d you kind of mess up the whole joke. [Laughter] No; I am very, very, very, very, very excited about the movie. We took some big risks on this thing, but I feel like\u2014I just try to listen and do. Whatever it turns into, I think it will be special. It\u2019s called <em>More Than Funny<\/em>\u2014share the trailer with as many people as you possibly can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you know the thing that I like about it\u2014I like that you\u2019re wanting to deploy people\u2014and their gifts and their abilities\u2014because everybody today can make a difference in somebody else\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> So let me tell a quick story. So there\u2019s a\u2014I tell this in the film, but I got to share it with you. We\u2019re creating a platform, where people can go deliver their punchlines, so to speak. You\u2019ll understand what that means in the movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was in Nashville, Tennessee\u2014I\u2019m in Nashville\u2014and like I said, I like to listen in between the jokes. I ask the question, \u201cWhat can I give?\u201d as opposed to, \u201cWhat can I get?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd please understand\u2014if by default\u2014if you don\u2019t articulate the answer to that question, by default, you\u2019re asking the question, \u201cWhat can I <em>get<\/em>?\u201d By default, ever since we ate the fruit from the tree, you\u2019re just looking for yourself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I\u2019m in Nashville. I\u2019m listening in between the jokes; and I\u2019m asking, \u201cWhat can I give to this audience?\u201d I feel like I\u2019m supposed to bring this lady up on stage, who is in the front row. I don\u2019t know why, but I asked her to come up on stage. Well, the issue is\u2014she\u2019s deaf, and she can\u2019t hear. There\u2019s 2,500 people there; and there\u2019s a lady on stage, doing sign language. I said \u201cHey, can you ask her to come up on stage?\u201d The whole audience is <em>frozen<\/em>, because they don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on; the lady didn\u2019t know what\u2019s going on. I\u2019m not sure what\u2019s going on. I asked the lady; and she signs over to her, and she comes up on stage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said to her \u201cCan you ask her, \u2018What is her biggest need?\u2019\u201d The audience is frozen\u2014they don\u2019t know. She signs to the sign language lady; and the lady says to me: \u201cShe says she doesn\u2019t have any needs. She\u2019s okay.\u201d I was like: \u201cNo; no! Ask her again.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo then the lady signs back and she says, \u201cWell, her and her husband haven\u2019t been able to go on a vacation for over 13 years, not even for a weekend.\u201d Now, normally, what we would do is\u2014we would just collect some money and, then, that\u2019s the end of the story. There you go, \u201cYay!\u201d But this isn\u2019t about giving the money. This is about giving from yourself. That\u2019s what a punch-liner will do, and you\u2019ll learn about that in the film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll I did was\u2014I asked the next question\u2014I said, \u201cOkay; so why not?\u201d And then she did sign language; she came back, and the lady said to me: \u201cWell, they have a special needs child. They can\u2019t afford anyone, who could really take care of the child in a way where they would feel safe leaving.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cOkay.\u201d I turn to my audience\u2014after explaining to them how your set up is what you receive\u2014what your punchline is: what you\u2019re called to deliver. I turn to the audience and said, \u201cWho in here can deliver the punchline?\u201d I said, \u201cWhere is the special needs nurse who can deliver the punchline?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cWho could watch the child while the couple gets away?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Absolutely. So, the first time, the whole room is silent\u2014they still in shock! I\u2019m still kind of trippin\u2019 too. I said it again, \u201cWhere is the special needs nurse who can deliver a punchline that this family needs?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, you hear a voice come from the top balcony. This lady says, \u201cHere I am.\u201d This lady comes walking down, and we introduce them. The whole room is <em>done<\/em>\u2014I\u2019m talking about <em>done<\/em>\u2014like I\u2019m in tears; the sign language lady is in tears. They live 30 minutes from each other, and we got to experience that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if we had just collected some money, I wouldn\u2019t even be telling you this story right now; but someone showed up, willing to deliver their punchline. The reason we put these stories in the middle of these jokes is\u2014because everyone thinks what they need is a laugh or a break\u2014but what you really need to know is: \u201cWhat are you called to deliver?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> So that\u2019s what we plan to do with this movie. paradigm shift that occurred that changed the way he does comedy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> <a id=\"_Hlk526006665\">Most comedians, most of the time\u2014myself included\u2014it was all about getting laughs from people. But I felt like God said to me, \u201cInstead of trying to get laughs from people, I want you to <em>give<\/em> them the opportunity to laugh.\u201d This changed everything! Because now I\u2019m not looking to take anything; I\u2019m just looking for an opportunity to <em>give<\/em>. <\/a><\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when an opportunity to go to a homeless shelter or abused children facility\u2014when it showed it up\u2014I would think to myself, \u201cThis is an opportunity for me to <em>give<\/em> laughter.\u201d It doesn\u2019t have anything to do with how they respond\u2014they laugh every time. But that\u2019s not why I\u2019m there. I\u2019m there to <em>give<\/em> them an opportunity, even if they don\u2019t laugh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEveryone has a gift. Most of the time, we\u2019re giving the gift to see some sort of response. But the truth is\u2014your job is simply to present the gift.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, October 10<sup>th<\/sup>. We were all scheduled to talk about something pretty serious today\/pretty sober; and then, I walk in here and see who you\u2019re hanging out with. I go: \u201cWell, there goes that plan. We are not going to get to our serious topic today.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what\u2019s really kind of funny to me is that we\u2019ve got a guest, who\u2019s been on FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> before, and I don\u2019t know what his last name is. [Laughter] I only know him as Michael Jr.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, is Jr. your last name?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; unless you say it backwards.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And then it\u2019s Ra\u2014Raj; Raj. I can\u2019t even say it backwards. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> It\u2019s just Jr. Michael. [Laughter] Yes; why do you have to make it more complex?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was trying to come up with Riahjo. I was trying to get junior backwards; I couldn\u2019t do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Our paths first crossed\u2014what?\u2014half a dozen years ago at the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Michael performed onboard; and how shall we say?\u2014it\u2019s all been history. The lines, going back to the rooms where he performs, is actually a problem; because, if you\u2019re speaking, they will leave your message early to go get in line to\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to hear Michael Jr.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014to hear Michael Jr. and his comedy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and folks who have started watching the <em>Art of Parenting<\/em>\u2122 are seeing Michael pop up, periodically, with some sage parenting wisdom that you shared with our audience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Impromptu stuff\u2014you guys are so cool\u2014like you said: \u201cHey, we\u2019ve got this crazy idea. While you are on the cruise, we\u2019re going to film you,\u201d\u2014completely improv. Nothing was prepared, except for the team; but <em>nothing<\/em> was scheduled. We just let people ask questions about parenting. And funny\u2014just\u2014it just kind of happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it was dope\u2014it was really dope! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> So let me explain what just happened here. [Laughter] So before\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was a set up. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> So before we went on air, I said the word, \u201cdope.\u201d Dennis was like, \u201cDid you call me a dope?!\u201d \u201cNo; no.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I thought he called my book a dope! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> No; dope means that something is efficient\u2014it\u2019s nice; it\u2019s clean; it\u2019s smooth; it\u2019s cool. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were talking about Dennis\u2019s book, <em>Interviewing Your Daughter\u2019s Date\u2014<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014which you actually used; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; I read the book\u2014I used the tactics.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What was it like the first time you interviewed a guy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> \u2014for a job position?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No; to take your daughter out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> It was a little\u2014I was trying not to be super-intimidating or have him be too intimidated, because it\u2019s like\u2014first of all, he\u2019d never heard of such a thing. He thought he could just take her out. I was like: \u201cNo; you actually can\u2019t. We need to sit down.\u201d The dude was tall\u2014he was like 6\u20198\u201d. I\u2019m only 6\u20192.\u201d He\u2019s looking down at me when I\u2019m really looking down at him, so it was kind of cool. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Is this the guy you share about in the <em>Art of Parenting<\/em>?\u2014because you say you asked the question: \u201cOn a scale of 1-10\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes, yes; I said to him: \u201cSo, on a scale of 1 to 10, where do you think my daughter is spiritually?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was like, \u201cShe\u2019s probably\u2014she\u2019s like an 8.\u201d He has some kind of accent: \u201cShe\u2019s like an 8.\u201d I was like, \u201cMm, yeah; she\u2019s not an 8 right now.\u201d [Laughter] I didn\u2019t say that\u2014I didn\u2019t say that to him\u2014but I just wanted to get a gage for where\u2014so I said, \u201cWhere do you feel like you are?\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019m probably a 5.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI explained to him\u2014I said: \u201cSo she\u2019s an 8; you\u2019re a 5. So you play basketball; right? You play forward\u2014going to college.\u201d I said: \u201cWhat happens to your game, if you are an 8, and you play \/ you practice against somebody who is a 5? What happens to your game if that\u2019s who you practice against?\u201d He said, \u201cIt goes down.\u201d I said \u201c<em>Yeah<\/em>, it does.\u201d [Laughter] I said: \u201cThis date thing is probably not going to work out;\u201d\u2014at all, really\u2014\u201cbut you\u2019re a nice guy.\u201d \u201cAwesome.\u201d \u201cHope your basketball career goes great,\u201d and then\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cBut you\u2019re not going out with my daughter.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes: \u201cYou\u2019re not going out with her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And your daughter said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Well, I just told her he wasn\u2019t dope. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then\u2014so we had to move on, and she was cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s another thing I did with my daughters is\u2014this is when they had voice mail and they would use it\u2014I recorded her voicemail greeting. If you call my daughter\u2019s phone, it says: \u201cHello; thank you for calling\u201d\u2014like one of my daughters\u2019 name is Cheryl\u2014\"Thanks for calling Cheryl\u2019s phone. If you don\u2019t have plans to help her follow God\u2019s purpose, hang up now. If you do, leave a message; she\u2019ll call you back. We didn\u2019t need funny.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t think he could handle it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t need funny in the last session as we talked about \u201cWhat the Purpose of Parenting Is,\u201d but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Is that all I am to you is funny?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No; let me just say, \u201cYou are <em>more<\/em> than funny.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a nice segue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Well, a <em>segue<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How is that for a segue?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And explain to our listeners why Bob said it that way\u2014\u201c<em>more<\/em> than funny.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Well, that just happens to be the name of my movie that\u2019s in theaters next week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> A Fathom event\u2014one night only\u2014it\u2019s called <em>More Than Funny<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It is Thursday night next week. If listeners are interested, they can buy tickets now\u2014they\u2019re on sale. You should buy them in advance; because in some cities, this is going to sell out; so you want to get your tickets. When I travel the country, I\u2019m doing comedy; but\u2014so let\u2019s say I\u2019m presenting joke number one; and then, normally, what would happen\u2014I would start doing the math on what I think joke number two should be, based off how you\u2019re currently responding to joke number one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, once I have that one confirmed, I move on to joke number three, joke number four. I will go seven-jokes deep, even though I\u2019m still presenting the first joke. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I met Jesus; right?\u2014and He wanted to talk between the jokes. [Laughter] So now, I can\u2019t go seven deep anymore; because I\u2019m listening in between the jokes and asking the question, \u201cWhat can I give this audience?\u201d He\u2019ll say to me\u2014like I feel like there are certain things I should do or certain things I should say\u2014and that\u2019s actually the <em>more<\/em> in between the jokes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason we\u2019re calling it <em>More Than Funny<\/em> is\u2014people will show up \/ a lot of non-Christians will show up, because they think it\u2019s <em>extra<\/em> funny. It is; but it\u2019s really, <em>more than funny<\/em>. So there\u2019s three stories that we share in the middle of these jokes, via video, of some really inspiring\u2014you guys watched this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve seen it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> \u2014yes; and there\u2019s some really inspiring stories right in the middle. So people laugh\u2014they\u2019re emotionally\u2014like their hearts are open; it\u2019s really, really cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The purpose of the stories\u2014and I love this\u2014it\u2019s not just to tell stories that are inspiring; but it\u2019s to tell stories that will get people to go: \u201cI could do something like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael: <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI can take what God\u2019s given me\u2014my gifts, my talents, my abilities\u2014I can leverage them for Kingdom purposes.\u201d If all of us were just thinking, intentionally, that way a little more often, that would have a <em>huge<\/em> impact on what\u2019s going on in the culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wanted to ask you, Michael, was it intimidating for you to go into a homeless shelter and do comedy? I mean, I know you\u2019re a professional; but you\u2019re walking into a group of people, who for the most part, their DNA is hopelessness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And humor and hopelessness\u2014I just kind of wonder: \u201cWhat were you thinking and feeling at that point?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> The homeless shelter was hard. Prisons\u2014I do comedy\u2014I did a couple of prisons as well\u2014captive audience. [Laughter] But a homeless shelter\u2014so what happened\u2014the reason I\u2019m able to do these events is because I had a shift in mindset. Where most comedians, most of the time\u2014myself included\u2014it was all about getting laughs from people. But I felt like God said to me, \u201cInstead of trying to get laughs from people, I want you to <em>give<\/em> them the opportunity to laugh.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis changed everything! Because now I\u2019m not looking to take anything; I\u2019m just looking for an opportunity to <em>give<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo when an opportunity to go to a homeless shelter or abused children facility\u2014when it showed it up, I would think to myself \u201cThis is an opportunity for me to <em>give<\/em> laughter.\u201d It doesn\u2019t\u2019 have anything to do with how they respond\u2014they laugh every time. But that\u2019s not why I\u2019m there. I\u2019m there to <em>give<\/em> them an opportunity, even if they don\u2019t laugh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEveryone has a gift. Most of the time, we\u2019re giving the gift to see some sort of response. But the truth is\u2014your job is simply to present the gift. It doesn\u2019t have anything to do with how they respond to it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was talking to this mechanic at one of my shows\u2014I was like, \u201cWhat do you do?\u201d He says, \u201cWell, I\u2019m a mechanic.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d He said, \u201cThat means I get paid to fix cars.\u201d I was like, \u201cOkay.\u201d So we start talking a little bit; by the end of our conversation, his statement was: \u201cI help insure that people reach their desired destination.\u201d That will put your alarm clock out of business; the other will cause you to hit snooze. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo this comedy special is funny\u2014it\u2019s the same type of comedy I\u2019ve done on the <em>Tonight Show<\/em>, <em>Comedy Central<\/em>\u2014all of these television shows. It\u2019s the same type of comedy, but it\u2019s <em>more<\/em> than just funny. So we want people to come laugh. The cool part is\u2014Christians can bring their non-Christian friends and say \u201cHey, watch this.\u201d They get to see Christians laughing at some legit comedy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd don\u2019t be creepy when you invite them. Why do, sometimes, Christians\u2014their voice changes when they go [sounding like an insecure person], \u201cDo you want to go to the movies with me?\u201d What are you doing?! <a id=\"_Hlk526008370\">[Laughter]<\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The first joke I ever heard you tell\u2014and it was an adlib joke\u2014we\u2019ve talked about this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Oh my goodness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were onboard the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise. I was introducing you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right beforehand, I gave an announcement\u2014I said: \u201cWe\u2019ve got a silent auction that\u2019s taking place onboard the boat. We\u2019re raising money for something here. You can go up tonight, and look at the items, and make a bid. It\u2019s all happening on the ninth deck\u2014it\u2019s in the Plantation Lounge. You go up and take part in that\u201d; and then, I introduced you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWithout missing a beat, you walked out; and you said: \u201cI\u2019m a little scared right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBecause I\u2019m a black man, on a boat in the ocean\u2019 and I just found out there\u2019s an auction in the Plantation Lounge.\u201d <a id=\"_Hlk526012808\">[Laughter]<\/a> We all rolled, but I\u2019ve watched you skillfully navigate the whole racial issue in comedy in a way that is disarming with people. Sometimes, I think: \u201cHow does he\u201d\u2014like you do a thing in the movie\u2014that we\u2019ll see next Thursday night in theaters\u2014where you talk about the difference between white people\u2019s dogs and black people\u2019s dogs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Hysterical. [Laughter] Listen, I\u2019m not saying this is funny\u2014because there\u2019s really nothing I do in that\u2014all I do is pull out the <em>truth<\/em>. I just talk about dog names, and it is\u2014I laugh every single night that we do this joke\u2014like I look forward to it! I\u2019m just pointing out some truths that kind of happen, and it\u2019s really\u2014you\u2019ve got to see it, because it\u2019s different every single night. When you go to the movie, wait until I talk about dog names\u2014you\u2019re going to lose it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Does anybody ever come up to you offended with the fact that you go there in terms of racial differences?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> I think the more we can laugh at our differences, the less important they become. It opens up some dialogue around here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did have someone say to me once\u2014I think they saw me on some TV show or whatever\u2014and they said, \u201cI can\u2019t believe you were there, and you never said, \u2018Jesus,\u2019 the whole time.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m sorry. What do you do for a living? Okay; so you work at McDonalds<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. Right after you give them a Big Mac<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, do you say, \u2018Hey, and Jesus loves you\u2019?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike I want everybody in the world to know that I\u2019m a Christian, but I don\u2019t want to have to say it. I want people to say, \u201cMan, there is something going on.\u201d Then, if you check anywhere\u2014anywhere at all\u2014you\u2019re going to find out the truth. My job is to catch them with the comedy and keep them with the truth\u2014not lead with the truth and, then, make them laugh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and you\u2019re never shy about your faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael: <\/strong>No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were telling us, over lunch, as you\u2019ve traveled the country, you\u2019ve had tens of thousands of people, who\u2019ve made a profession of faith, at one of your events.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s pretty overwhelming how many people come forward. My whole goal is, not just for them to make that decision, but we want help people go to the next level and actually walk it out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You believe that comedy just shows up. In fact, you say that in your movie. What I wanted to ask you was: \u201cWhere do you think comedy comes from?\u2014humor\/laughter. Do you believe that was given to us by God?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> That is so awesome. So first, you asked a question\u2014you said, \u201cWhere does it come from?\u201d You paused, but the silence was too much; so then you had to feed me a little bit. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t sure you had the answer there. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> I got something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We don\u2019t want dead air, because Michael Jr. is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> People turn the radio off!\u2014okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> No; they don\u2019t; they actually don\u2019t\u2014no, no, no. It\u2019s more suspenseful if they got <em>nothing<\/em> and like: \u201cI know they\u2019re coming back any second.\u201d So let\u2019s try it again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; so let\u2019s have a pause.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Where do you think laughter comes from, Michael Jr.?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oooh; oooh!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> See\u2014that felt kind of right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Are you there?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> It felt right. [Laughter] I absolutely, unquestionably, know that God has given us that as a release. People always quote Proverbs 17:22: \u201cLaughter is good like a medicine.\u201d But God has given me this gift to understand\u2014like in the <em>midst<\/em> of however dramatic a situation may be, I can find the funny. I\u2019m starting to understand, even more so, when <em>not<\/em> to bring the funny\u2014when to just show up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ll see this in this\u2014when you watch this movie, the funny is there; but there are some stories and some challenges that happen\u2014like there\u2019s <em>no<\/em> comedy special that exists that\u2019s like this. I can say that with all confidence because we made it\/we saw it\u2014like nobody takes these sort of stories. We\u2019re in the woods, with homeless people; and then suddenly, we\u2019re on stage in front of 4,000 people, doing jokes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod has given me an ability, not really just comedy, but really to communicate in a way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI <em>know<\/em> it\u2019s from him. Comedy does show up, but it\u2019s from Him. For me to be able to do this math\u2014this fast and find this funny\u2014it\u2019s absolutely God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t know this about <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014but you know this about Bob and me\u2014we enjoy having fun. When people come up to us and say, \u201cI listen to the broadcast,\u201d they\u2019ll, first of all, say, \u201cThanks for taking us to the Bible.\u201d Secondly, \u201cThanks for being authentic.\u201d But always, within the top three, is laughter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>People want and need to laugh today. They mention that about our broadcast, and I think that\u2019s what you\u2019re doing in this movie. You\u2019re giving people a gift of laughter\u2014having a good time and not doing it in a crass way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> That\u2019s awesome, and it\u2019s not corny. Because a lot of times, when you hear, \u201cChristian,\u201d and you hear, \u201ccomedy,\u201d the visual you got is\u2014people\u2014the next question is: \u201cWhere\u2019s your puppet?\u201d \u201cA puppet? What are you talking about?\u2014a puppet.\u201d [Laughter] \u201cI don\u2019t know\u2014a puppet?\u201d \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cflannel board.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> \u201cWhat are talking about?\u201d \u201cHambo; hambo; ha\u2026\u201d\u2014like: \u201cThat\u2019s not what I\u2019m doing. It\u2019s the legit comedy that you\u2019ll see on late-night television. In fact, if you just Google<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> \u2018Michel Jr.\u2019\u2014not just me\u2014there\u2019s some other really funny comedians out there, whom I won\u2019t name right now; because I need you to go see my movie.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Are you saying you\u2019re never corny?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Not on purpose; I hope not! [Laughter] I might like if I\u2019m working out in the yard\u2014I might get a corn on my hand or something, but I\u2014[Laughter]\u2014yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014not intentionally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> No; not on purpose, because that\u2019s weird.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You filmed this in front of a live audience. They were in on the fact that they were part of the movie; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; they <em>knew<\/em>. We filmed it in Cordova, Tennessee. They knew that we were doing the movie, and they were\u2014it was an <em>awesome<\/em> audience. They are excited about seeing themselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve all seen a comedy special \/ we\u2019ve all seen some inspiring stories; but you don\u2019t get to see them <em>together<\/em> in the middle\u2014like what happens, emotionally, is just really cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your hope is the same as our hope was when we did our movie, <em>Like Arrows,<\/em> in theaters, back last May. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur hope was it would be catalytic\u2014it would be the <em>beginning<\/em> of a parenting journey for moms and dads. Your hope with this special\u2014next Thursday night \/ that\u2019s going to be in theaters one night only\u2014is that this will be catalytic. This is the <em>beginning<\/em> of an adjustment for people to start thinking differently about their punchline; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Absolutely. Are you bringing up Cadillac\u2019s because I\u2019m a black dude? [Laughter] Is that just what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Catalytic is the converter in a Cadillac. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Oh, okay; thank you; thank you. I was like: \u201cWhy is he bringing up\u2014man, I like Toyotas.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes! Yes; there is a really cool, awesome, amazing call to action at the end of this film, where we want to help people help people in a really cool way. We\u2019re creating a platform, where people help people, but not with money. You can\u2019t use money on this platform to help people. We\u2019re going to let everybody know after they see the movie, so go see the movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd on top of that, the proceeds from the movie\u2014because there\u2019s so much stuff going on in the world\u2014we\u2019re doing\u2014the proceeds is going to a black family in America.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yours?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Yes; that was a joke, Dennis! [Laughter] If you say, \u201cYours,\u201d you kind of mess up the whole joke. [Laughter] No; I am very, very, very, very, very excited about the movie. We took some big risks on this thing, but I feel like\u2014I just try to listen and do. Whatever it turns into, I think it will be special. It\u2019s called <em>More Than Funny<\/em>\u2014share the trailer with as many people as you possibly can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you know the thing that I like about it\u2014I like that you\u2019re wanting to deploy people\u2014and their gifts and their abilities\u2014because everybody today can make a difference in somebody else\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> So let me tell a quick story. So there\u2019s a\u2014I tell this in the film, but I got to share it with you. We\u2019re creating a platform, where people can go deliver their punchlines, so to speak. You\u2019ll understand what that means in the movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was in Nashville, Tennessee\u2014I\u2019m in Nashville\u2014and like I said, I like to listen in between the jokes. I ask the question, \u201cWhat can I give?\u201d as opposed to, \u201cWhat can I get?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd please understand\u2014if by default\u2014if you don\u2019t articulate the answer to that question, by default, you\u2019re asking the question, \u201cWhat can I <em>get<\/em>?\u201d By default, ever since we ate the fruit from the tree, you\u2019re just looking for yourself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I\u2019m in Nashville. I\u2019m listening in between the jokes; and I\u2019m asking, \u201cWhat can I give to this audience?\u201d I feel like I\u2019m supposed to bring this lady up on stage, who is in the front row. I don\u2019t know why, but I asked her to come up on stage. Well, the issue is\u2014she\u2019s deaf, and she can\u2019t hear. There\u2019s 2,500 people there; and there\u2019s a lady on stage, doing sign language. I said \u201cHey, can you ask her to come up on stage?\u201d The whole audience is <em>frozen<\/em>, because they don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on; the lady didn\u2019t know what\u2019s going on. I\u2019m not sure what\u2019s going on. I asked the lady; and she signs over to her, and she comes up on stage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said to her \u201cCan you ask her, \u2018What is her biggest need?\u2019\u201d The audience is frozen\u2014they don\u2019t know. She signs to the sign language lady; and the lady says to me: \u201cShe says she doesn\u2019t have any needs. She\u2019s okay.\u201d I was like: \u201cNo; no! Ask her again.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo then the lady signs back and she says, \u201cWell, her and her husband haven\u2019t been able to go on a vacation for over 13 years, not even for a weekend.\u201d Now, normally, what we would do is\u2014we would just collect some money and, then, that\u2019s the end of the story. There you go, \u201cYay!\u201d But this isn\u2019t about giving the money. This is about giving from yourself. That\u2019s what a punch-liner will do, and you\u2019ll learn about that in the film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll I did was\u2014I asked the next question\u2014I said, \u201cOkay; so why not?\u201d And then she did sign language; she came back, and the lady said to me: \u201cWell, they have a special needs child. They can\u2019t afford anyone, who could really take care of the child in a way where they would feel safe leaving.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cOkay.\u201d I turn to my audience\u2014after explaining to them how your set up is what you receive\u2014what your punchline is: what you\u2019re called to deliver. I turn to the audience and said, \u201cWho in here can deliver the punchline?\u201d I said, \u201cWhere is the special needs nurse who can deliver the punchline?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cWho could watch the child while the couple gets away?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Absolutely. So, the first time, the whole room is silent\u2014they still in shock! I\u2019m still kind of trippin\u2019 too. I said it again, \u201cWhere is the special needs nurse who can deliver a punchline that this family needs?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, you hear a voice come from the top balcony. This lady says, \u201cHere I am.\u201d This lady comes walking down, and we introduce them. The whole room is <em>done<\/em>\u2014I\u2019m talking about <em>done<\/em>\u2014like I\u2019m in tears; the sign language lady is in tears. They live 30 minutes from each other, and we got to experience that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if we had just collected some money, I wouldn\u2019t even be telling you this story right now; but someone showed up, willing to deliver their punchline. The reason we put these stories in the middle of these jokes is\u2014because everyone thinks what they need is a laugh or a break\u2014but what you really need to know is: \u201cWhat are you called to deliver?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> So that\u2019s what we plan to do with this movie. Bring people and say to them, \u201cHey, we\u2019re going to go laugh,\u201d because you are going to laugh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> It\u2019s more than funny\u2014it just so happens it\u2019s <em>More Than Funny<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I just want listeners to understand\u2014if all you got out of next Thursday night was a great comedy show\u2014that would be worth you doing this\u2014because it\u2019s a great comedy show, but you\u2019re going to get so much more out of this. I think God\u2019s going to show up, in a powerful way, in theaters all across the country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And there\u2019s nothing as exhilarating as knowing that you, as a creature created in the image of God, is operating within His will\u2014deploying your gifts and abilities, impacting another human being\u2014maybe that\u2019s the gift of helping them; maybe it\u2019s carpentry; maybe it\u2019s caring for someone; maybe it\u2019s just holding a baby\u2014but regardless, step up, and make a difference, and go to this movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd as you go, think about your purpose \/ think about your cause: \u201cWhat\u2019s your punchline?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong> Here\u2019s the thing about a punchline\u2014it\u2019s not super deep. You have a phone\u2014you could actually send a text to three people that says: \u201cI really appreciate you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSorry I don\u2019t say it enough,\u201d\u2014boom! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour set up was the fact you know how to text, and you have a phone. Punchline is the fact you decided to deliver it. It doesn\u2019t have to be that complex. I want <em>everyone<\/em> to go, so you can see the vision; so you can enjoy; so you can laugh.
