In fact, in the middle of one fight, Elicia was ready to leave; and D.A. went a little crazy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> It was one of those moments that you\u2019re like, \u201cI don\u2019t even know what I should be doing, but this is what I\u2019m doing.\u201d I couldn\u2019t stop\u2014so I took my boots off, took my pants off, took my shirt off, [and] took my undershirt off. I just had my underwear on, and the door was wide open. I started hitting my chest, saying [shouting]: \u201cYou\u2019re going to leave me! You\u2019re going to leave me!\u201d She\u2019s just\u2014she starts laughing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, September 11<sup>th<\/sup>. I think our guests today would be interested to know what is engraved on the inside of your wife\u2019s wedding band. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> 1 John, Chapter 4: \u201cPerfect love casts out all fear.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think when you get married, you don\u2019t realize all the fears you have about being known, and knowing another person, and the fear of the future. I think we have a generation that is frightened about marriage, because they don\u2019t know how it goes the distance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a couple here who have gone the distance since 2003. They\u2019ve got three children that are tagging along for the ride. D.A. and Elicia Horton from North Long Beach, California. Welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Thank you. That led to a <em>huge<\/em> fight that happened out in the street that went on until like four in the morning. Obviously, you did wind up working it out; and you got married; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> We did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> We did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> I mean, Elicia threatened to sue me that night over her wedding dress that she had paid $500 for\u2014she was <em>done<\/em>. We took time to assess. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Had you hired the lawyer? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In her mind, she had. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes; yes\u2014but we took time to assess\u2014we prayed; we sought counsel. Then on June 28, 2003, we did take our vows before family and friends. Ever since then, it has been an uphill journey\u2014then there have been valleys, there have been mountaintop experiences, and then there have been mundane plateaus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, let\u2019s talk about your first year of marriage. What had happened? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Fast forward\u2014we\u2019re still not handling conflict, and the fears, and the battles of what it looks like to live in this marriage that is sanctifying to us. We were resisting and reluctant to it every step of the way\u2014at least, I know I was. We just had a time, where I was emotional\u2014I mean, I think, at seven or eight months\u2019 pregnant, I was frustrated; because we were not seeing, eye to eye. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere were a lot of things, again, that we both brought into the marriage. One of them was dealing with the financial burdens and what we were going to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFast forward\u2014our precious baby girl was our souvenir from our honeymoon. We were just like, \u201cOkay; we have no time to prepare; no time to plan\u2014we\u2019re in knee deep,\u201d so we were fighting. I said: \u201cOkay; I\u2019m done. I need some time.\u201d I was gathering my stuff and saying, \u201cI\u2019m just going to go stay at my mom\u2019s house.\u201d It was going to be temporary\u2014just temporary. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> But she didn\u2019t say that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t say that because I just wanted to see what reaction I got out of him. I was standing there; and all of a sudden, he just starts undressing himself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Physically undressing? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Physically undressing himself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, why were you doing that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> You know what\u2014it was one of those moments that you\u2019re like, \u201cI don\u2019t even know what I should be doing, but this is what I\u2019m doing.\u201d I couldn\u2019t stop\u2014so I took my boots off, took my pants off, took my shirt off, [and] took my undershirt off. I just had my underwear on, and the door was wide open. I started hitting my chest, saying [shouting], \u201cYou\u2019re going to leave me! You\u2019re going to leave me.\u201d She\u2019s just\u2014she starts laughing. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m a talker, and I had no words to say; I couldn\u2019t think clearly. I didn\u2019t know what was going on, so this was the only option that I thought of. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> I, literally\u2014I did start laughing; because I\u2019m like, \u201cThis fool is literally underdressing himself,\u201d\u2014mind you it\u2019s January. So, it\u2019s Kansas City\u2014it\u2019s like 2 degrees outside. He has the door wide open, and he is just standing there. All I could do is laugh and thinking: \u201cOkay; how did we get this far? How did we come to this point? What drew us to this, where we couldn\u2019t just stop, and just pray, and ask God to help us?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> We knew the right thing to say \/ we knew the right thing to do; but our flesh was just accelerating it, and we couldn\u2019t go any further. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes; even in our spiritual immaturity\u2014just to be honest, so the listeners can understand some context\u2014we had been walking with the Lord since we were in our mid-teenage years; but because of a lack of discipleship, even at this point in our marriage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014we didn\u2019t get discipled until like 2005. It was two years into our marriage where we had real, genuine biblical discipleship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe used the Bible as ammunition to fight and shoot each other\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it was not for mutual edification. It wasn\u2019t for brokenness and humility. For both of us, it was, \u201cNo; this Scripture says\u201d\u2014and pop, pop, pop. We would just pop off at each other, using Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What got you\u2014now, you\u2019re still pregnant. This is still the first year of marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What had brought such a level of frustration in your marriage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that you\u2019re thinking, \u201cI\u2019m going to go live with Mom\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> We had faced some financial burdens during that time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014because of my immaturity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Yes; go ahead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> I was never good with finances. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> I mean, this is no excuse; but again, just trying to give a framework. Growing up in poverty\u2014when I had a job and Elicia had a job, and we had income\u2014and I actually got to see that income\u2014I began to say: \u201cMan, let\u2019s spend it on this. Let\u2019s spend it on this.\u201d She knew financial stewardship\u2014she had discipline; I had <em>no<\/em> discipline. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNobody ever walked me through 1 Timothy 3; nobody ever walked me through Titus 1. When I began to see those Scriptures, I removed myself from ministry\u2014I stepped out of the pastorate; because I said: \u201cThat\u2019s not me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNo one\u2019s every taught me how to study the Bible. No one\u2019s ever taught me how to prepare a sermon.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt like I had just been thrown up there in youth ministry, because I\u2019m a gospel rapper. That\u2019s when I began to see the shallowness in my life\u2014just that term, \u201cpastor\u201d\u2014I was like, \u201cThat\u2019s very shallow.\u201d That\u2019s when I said: \u201cThis cannot be. I\u2019m convicted. We need to have life change.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> So, yes, it was a financial burden of that. It was also the fact that he stepped away from some income that we needed to have supplemented elsewhere. That was just a strain on us; because, at the time, I was the one working consistently. I\u2019m like: \u201cI\u2019m about to take a maternity leave. How are we going to figure this out?\u201d\u2014so that\u2019s what kind of brought it to a head.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, how much was it, when they placed your firstborn daughter in your arms and you realized: \u201cWe\u2019re in a relay race here. We\u2019re passing on\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Yes; I also believe, honestly, that the Lord used our daughter to grow us up in a way that showed us our immaturities \/ showed us our selfishness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014selfishness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> \u2014showed us the things we focused too heavily on versus you saying: \u201cYou know what? This is what marriage <em>can<\/em> look like. Now, we have another human being to be concerned about and provide for.\u201d I really feel like both of us\u2014that kind of just put us in a different light of maturity, saying, \u201cOkay; this is where the rubber meets the road and the struggle is.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> It really showed me my immaturity. First of all, trying to learn\u2014because being the baby of the family and having two older brothers, there is such an age gap between me and my brothers. When I was coming of age, my older brother was already married and out of the house. It was almost like I was an only child, so there were high levels of selfishness I never considered. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, when I got married\u2014when I would come in with something to eat, and I ran through a drive-thru, she\u2019s like, \u201cWhere\u2019s mine?\u201d I\u2019m like: \u201cWhat do you mean, \u2018Where\u2019s yours?\u2019 You should have gotten yourself something to eat,\u201d\u2014stuff, where you are just like, \u201cBro, you shouldn\u2019t even think like that!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe comes from a family of four siblings. They would get a bag of cheeseburgers from McDonald\u2019s<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014no fries\u2014and they would share, so she came from a very communal environment. It took time; but once we had that foundation of interdependence, it strengthened us and broke down more barriers to our oneness. I affirm everything you\u2019re saying; because that\u2019s when I began to realize\u2014and in Spanish, it\u2019s <em>machismo<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s the pride\/it\u2019s the arrogance of a man that: \u201cI\u2019m supposed to have all these things together. I don\u2019t show weakness \/ I don\u2019t show emotion,\u201d\u2014I have to fight against that a lot. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was a turning point\u2014is that, when the Lord used our brokenness from filing bankruptcy\u2014to losing the dream house that we wanted, to moving in to a two-bedroom \/ one bathroom, infested with mold and cockroaches\u2014when we saw those turns, some of our most joyful memories were, in poverty, after we came out of the bankruptcy and everything; because it was there that we felt like that was just a symbol of what God was doing in our lives\u2014breaking down the idols, calling out our sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Confessing and repentance were a reality. Then, I began to recognize\u2014like what you said: \u201cMy wife is a gift given to me by Jesus. I am a steward. I must empower. I must allow her, where she is strong, to be strong; and I catch my cues from her in the areas of her strength\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cvice versa.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cbut then vice versa. I\u2019ve got to step up, and be strong, and lead in the areas where I\u2019m strong so that she can feel led and catch her cues from me in those areas that I am strong that she\u2019s weak in.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where that complementary aspect began\u2014to recognize: \u201cElicia is not my hindrance. She\u2019s a helpmate. I need to learn how to stop being a hindrance to her and start serving my wife as a helpmate, not a hindrance.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you were doing\u2014and you\u2019ve done marriage counseling since you\u2019ve been in the pastorate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014if you were doing marriage counseling today for the two of you, when you were engaged, what kind of counsel and advice would you give to that couple about where they were headed and what they needed most? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> One of the things I would definitely say is that the premarital counseling was good; but I feel like people need to have other people that have been married longer than they have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You need some mentors; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> \u2014some mentors, who just really come alongside of them. I feel like that\u2019s what I would have counseled\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to say: \u201cGo, hang tight to them. Find those people. Ask God to show you who they are and hang tight to them so they can walk with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAlso, taking their spiritual walks with the Lord as important, but also taking it seriously enough to say: \u201cOkay; I need discipleship. I need accountability, personally, in my life and vice versa for my spouse. Then, also, encouraging each other in our spiritual walks with the Lord; because a lot of times we\u2019ll take it and say: \u2018We\u2019ll individualize. For me, I\u2019m just going to worry about myself.\u2019 It\u2019s like, \u2018No; I just need to be as equally concerned about my husband\u2019s walk with the Lord as my own.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say those are the things I would definitely counsel us to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes; if I was there; and it was six months out before the wedding day, I would say: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to take you under my wing, and I\u2019m going to pour into you the things of God\u2019s Word but in a practical aspect. I\u2019m going to call out all the nuances of your sin that you have nobody in your life that you are accountable to. I\u2019m going to talk through your sexual issues. I\u2019m going to talk to your lack of financial stewardship. I\u2019m going to talk about your lack of backbone and cowardiceness in the midst of conflict, and you\u2019re an avoider. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to talk through your lack of appropriating biblical theology to practical living; and your stumbling block, right now, Damon\u2014that is stopping that\u2014is you\u2019re not having heart transformation from the Holy Spirit, who lives inside of you. You\u2019re not surrendering the idols of your heart and life to your Lord Jesus Christ. He\u2019s got competition in your heart right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would call all those things out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s crazy is\u2014in all honesty, from me being an older millennial to then a younger millennial\u2014I know I would receive it; because I know, deep down, that\u2019s what I really want. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, we\u2019d like to think that a young man or a young woman could get all of these things working right before they get married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But the reality is one of the reason God brings us together in marriage is so we can work out these things; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s why you have to start from a foundation that says: \u201cLook, we\u2019re in this for life. We\u2019re committed to one another,\u201d because that keeps you from fleeing when things get tough and keeps you right in the crucible God wants you in, convicting you to grow you up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely.<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Absolutely; you\u2019re absolutely right\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s to God\u2019s glory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is not a superficial statement at all; but that is where, I think, we still are broken by the comments that are given to us by people; because we bucked the trend, as millennials. We got married in our early 20s; so, now, there are millennial couples that are like, \u201cMan, we are three years in; and you guys have been doing this for fifteen years.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cThat\u2019s a lifetime.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> It is. No; it sincerely is. That\u2019s where I\u2019m like, \u201cMan, Lord, the way You have written our story is unique; but it\u2019s not too unique that\u2019s it is not relatable.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> And I think that\u2019s where the vulnerability and the transparency comes in; because when they hear there is still present tense sin struggles in my and Elicia\u2019s life\u2014that we\u2019re not perfect; that we do have arguments \/ we don\u2019t see eye to eye; I need to stop working so much and spend more time with my daughters and my son\u2014when they hear those confessions of progress and progressive sanctification,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Yes; amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014then they are like, \u201cOkay; so I\u2019m still going to be in progressive sanctification in year 15 in as much as year 1\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cor 10 months before we get married.\u201d That\u2019s a pathway of hope that they see; and the one that they are pursuing is not Damon and Elicia\u2014it\u2019s Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And can we just say, \u201cWhen you get to years 35, and 40, and 45, you\u2019re still going to be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s what I was getting ready to say, too, Bob\u2014there\u2019s no opting out of this process; okay? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; but you did say something\u2014you said, \u201cYou don\u2019t use the D-word.\u201d And I want you <em>both<\/em> to unpack that, because this culture throws that around as both a threat and a living alternative. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why do you not use that word? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Well, I have to confess\u2014in the beginning, I did use that word. I did use that word, because I felt like that was the easy way out; you know? I didn\u2019t see this as something long-term and worth fighting for; because I was just, again, very spiritually immature\u2014not understanding that: \u201cWow, God has done so much in my life; and He has given me this gift as a part of my sanctification. Why am I resisting it?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut now, seeing how God has redeemed a lot of our story for the greater good\/for His glory, I feel like God has really showed us what it means to <em>fight<\/em> for the oneness\u2014fight for the togetherness \/ fight for the fact that we\u2019re not supposed to be fighting against each other\u2014but we\u2019re going to fight against the world, our flesh, and the evil one. The fight comes as we\u2019re standing together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI feel like fighting together for our marriage has been the best testimony for us to give to our kids\u2014saying: \u201cYou know, this is not perfect,\u201d\u2014but being real, and authentic, and saying\u2014\u201cYou know what? We\u2019re going to mess up, but we\u2019re going to keep repenting\u2014keep confessing \/ keep working this out\u2014because we know that God has given us a reason to do that by giving us His love first.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> D.A., before you share your response to my question, I want you to share with our listeners: \u201cHow did her threats of divorce, early on in your marriage\u2014how did that impact you?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> It hurt. It set me back; because partially, Elicia did it for shock value. She would always say these extreme statements. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say\u2014the only way I would tell her is: \u201cStop using terminal language.\u201d She would say statements like: \u201cI\u2019m done!\u201d \u201cI\u2019m finished,\u201d \u201cI want a divorce.\u201d I\u2019m like: \u201cYou\u2019ve got to stop using terminal language; because every time you do that, that\u2019s like dropping an atom bomb on my heart. I don\u2019t know how many times I\u2019m going to recover from that, emotionally, Elicia,\u201d\u2014I had to tell her that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen she began to recognize, \u201cYes; I didn\u2019t really mean it,\u201d because that was the problem\u2014I started to <em>believe<\/em> her. I started to <em>believe<\/em> that she did not want to be with me\u2014that she was only with me because I was the provider\u2014so I saw myself as an ATM. [Laughter] When I began to tell her the emotional damages that that terminal language caused in my heart, she learned to put her tongue under submission of the Holy Spirit and refrain from saying that type of terminal language to me\u2014to which, she will now confront conflict\u2014or me and my mistake or poor habits\u2014and she won\u2019t say, \u201cI\u2019m done.\u201d She will say, \u201cHere\u2019s an issue that we need to deal with.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> It\u2019s no longer terminal\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014but she\u2019s actually bringing me in to the privilege of hearing her heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know how many couples I\u2019ve talked to, over the years, where I\u2019ve said: \u201cThat\u2019s the highest card in your hand\u2014that\u2019s the trump card. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cIt trumps everything else.\u201d People will throw it casually around in an attempt to try to power out whatever else is going on: \u201cSo, you\u2019re coming at me with this. I\u2019m going to throw the trump card and shut you down.\u201d There is no harder stone you can throw in a marriage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Oh, absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014than to say: \u201cMaybe, we should get out of this. Maybe, we should shut this down.\u201d That\u2019s where couples have got to understand: \u201cThe seed that is planted in the soul of the other person, when you threaten that in a moment of anger\u2014that seed stays there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cfor a long, long time.\u201d The next time there is conflict, there is this little voice in your head saying, \u201cShe wants out again.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, the whole stability of everything in your marriage is always on\u2014well, you live in California. You know what it\u2019s like to live on a fault line. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Shaky ground; yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What about you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> We believe that marriage is an illustration for the gospel, and every Christian home should be a billboard for the gospel\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the reality of saying: \u201cDivorce\u2014that is contrary to the doctrine of reconciliation\u2014\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014that is contrary to the finished work of Jesus Christ.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we\u2019re going to say: \u201cLook, I\u2019m done with this. We\u2019re going to dissolve this. We\u2019re going to go our separate ways,\u201d I don\u2019t see Jesus doing that in Scripture. When He speaks to the seven churches in Asia, He doesn\u2019t use that type of language. And when I look at the redemptive component\u2014and how Jesus is going to make all things new\u2014like that\u2019s what I look at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI look at\u2014as one sister in our church put it\u2014this is the only time Elicia and I will have the opportunity to tell our flesh, \u201cNo,\u201d and say, \u201cYes,\u201d to the Spirit of God that lives inside of us; because when we\u2019re in glory, there is going to be no more struggle with sin; there is going to be no more battle; [and] there is going to be no more scars. This is the time that God has given for us to maximize those opportunities to walk out by denying our flesh \/ denying the things that we want to say in those moments or even moving forward with carnal realities and saying: \u201cNo; you\u2019re not my god. My comfort is not my God; Jesus is my God. \u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDivorce is the most comfortable move right now that I think in my mind; but I don\u2019t think of all the intricate nuances that will come from that type of decision; so I need to say: \u2018No,\u2019 to my flesh; \u2018No,\u2019 to what I want; \u2018No,\u2019 to my anger\u2014it is not to be my master. If you went out to a doctor\u2014and you had that pain in your leg\u2014and the doctor said, \u2018Well, we can cut it off, but then you\u2019ll be a one-legged man for the rest of your life; or we can do the hard work of correcting that pain and fixing it, and you can run again.\u2019\u201d Some people go, \u2018The pain is so bad; just cut it off, Doc.\u2019 I just go, \u2018Think about the choice you\u2019re making for the rest\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> That\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201c\u2019of your life when you do that. In fact, in the middle of one fight, Elicia was ready to leave; and D.A. went a little crazy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> It was one of those moments that you\u2019re like, \u201cI don\u2019t even know what I should be doing, but this is what I\u2019m doing.\u201d I couldn\u2019t stop\u2014so I took my boots off, took my pants off, took my shirt off, [and] took my undershirt off. I just had my underwear on, and the door was wide open. I started hitting my chest, saying [shouting]: \u201cYou\u2019re going to leave me! I think we have a generation that is frightened about marriage, because they don\u2019t know how it goes the distance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a couple here who have gone the distance since 2003. They\u2019ve got three children that are tagging along for the ride. D.A. and Elicia Horton from North Long Beach, California. Welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Thank you. That led to a <em>huge<\/em> fight that happened out in the street that went on until like four in the morning. Obviously, you did wind up working it out; and you got married; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> We did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> We did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> I mean, Elicia threatened to sue me that night over her wedding dress that she had paid $500 for\u2014she was <em>done<\/em>. We took time to assess. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Had you hired the lawyer? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In her mind, she had. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes; yes\u2014but we took time to assess\u2014we prayed; we sought counsel. Then on June 28, 2003, we did take our vows before family and friends. Ever since then, it has been an uphill journey\u2014then there have been valleys, there have been mountaintop experiences, and then there have been mundane plateaus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, let\u2019s talk about your first year of marriage. What had happened? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Fast forward\u2014we\u2019re still not handling conflict, and the fears, and the battles of what it looks like to live in this marriage that is sanctifying to us. We were resisting and reluctant to it every step of the way\u2014at least, I know I was. We just had a time, where I was emotional\u2014I mean, I think, at seven or eight months\u2019 pregnant, I was frustrated; because we were not seeing, eye to eye. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere were a lot of things, again, that we both brought into the marriage. One of them was dealing with the financial burdens and what we were going to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFast forward\u2014our precious baby girl was our souvenir from our honeymoon. We were just like, \u201cOkay; we have no time to prepare; no time to plan\u2014we\u2019re in knee deep,\u201d so we were fighting. I said: \u201cOkay; I\u2019m done. I need some time.\u201d I was gathering my stuff and saying, \u201cI\u2019m just going to go stay at my mom\u2019s house.\u201d It was going to be temporary\u2014just temporary. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> But she didn\u2019t say that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t say that because I just wanted to see what reaction I got out of him. I was standing there; and all of a sudden, he just starts undressing himself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Physically undressing? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Physically undressing himself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, why were you doing that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> You know what\u2014it was one of those moments that you\u2019re like, \u201cI don\u2019t even know what I should be doing, but this is what I\u2019m doing.\u201d I couldn\u2019t stop\u2014so I took my boots off, took my pants off, took my shirt off, [and] took my undershirt off. I just had my underwear on, and the door was wide open. I started hitting my chest, saying [shouting], \u201cYou\u2019re going to leave me! You\u2019re going to leave me.\u201d She\u2019s just\u2014she starts laughing. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m a talker, and I had no words to say; I couldn\u2019t think clearly. I didn\u2019t know what was going on, so this was the only option that I thought of. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> I, literally\u2014I did start laughing; because I\u2019m like, \u201cThis fool is literally underdressing himself,\u201d\u2014mind you it\u2019s January. So, it\u2019s Kansas City\u2014it\u2019s like 2 degrees outside. He has the door wide open, and he is just standing there. All I could do is laugh and thinking: \u201cOkay; how did we get this far? How did we come to this point? What drew us to this, where we couldn\u2019t just stop, and just pray, and ask God to help us?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> We knew the right thing to say \/ we knew the right thing to do; but our flesh was just accelerating it, and we couldn\u2019t go any further. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes; even in our spiritual immaturity\u2014just to be honest, so the listeners can understand some context\u2014we had been walking with the Lord since we were in our mid-teenage years; but because of a lack of discipleship, even at this point in our marriage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014we didn\u2019t get discipled until like 2005. It was two years into our marriage where we had real, genuine biblical discipleship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe used the Bible as ammunition to fight and shoot each other\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it was not for mutual edification. It wasn\u2019t for brokenness and humility. For both of us, it was, \u201cNo; this Scripture says\u201d\u2014and pop, pop, pop. We would just pop off at each other, using Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What got you\u2014now, you\u2019re still pregnant. This is still the first year of marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What had brought such a level of frustration in your marriage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that you\u2019re thinking, \u201cI\u2019m going to go live with Mom\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> We had faced some financial burdens during that time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014because of my immaturity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Yes; go ahead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> I was never good with finances. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> I mean, this is no excuse; but again, just trying to give a framework. Growing up in poverty\u2014when I had a job and Elicia had a job, and we had income\u2014and I actually got to see that income\u2014I began to say: \u201cMan, let\u2019s spend it on this. Let\u2019s spend it on this.\u201d She knew financial stewardship\u2014she had discipline; I had <em>no<\/em> discipline. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNobody ever walked me through 1 Timothy 3; nobody ever walked me through Titus 1. When I began to see those Scriptures, I removed myself from ministry\u2014I stepped out of the pastorate; because I said: \u201cThat\u2019s not me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNo one\u2019s every taught me how to study the Bible. No one\u2019s ever taught me how to prepare a sermon.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt like I had just been thrown up there in youth ministry, because I\u2019m a gospel rapper. That\u2019s when I began to see the shallowness in my life\u2014just that term, \u201cpastor\u201d\u2014I was like, \u201cThat\u2019s very shallow.\u201d That\u2019s when I said: \u201cThis cannot be. I\u2019m convicted. We need to have life change.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> So, yes, it was a financial burden of that. It was also the fact that he stepped away from some income that we needed to have supplemented elsewhere. That was just a strain on us; because, at the time, I was the one working consistently. I\u2019m like: \u201cI\u2019m about to take a maternity leave. How are we going to figure this out?\u201d\u2014so that\u2019s what kind of brought it to a head.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, how much was it, when they placed your firstborn daughter in your arms and you realized: \u201cWe\u2019re in a relay race here. We\u2019re passing on\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Yes; I also believe, honestly, that the Lord used our daughter to grow us up in a way that showed us our immaturities \/ showed us our selfishness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014selfishness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> \u2014showed us the things we focused too heavily on versus you saying: \u201cYou know what? This is what marriage <em>can<\/em> look like. Now, we have another human being to be concerned about and provide for.\u201d I really feel like both of us\u2014that kind of just put us in a different light of maturity, saying, \u201cOkay; this is where the rubber meets the road and the struggle is.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> It really showed me my immaturity. First of all, trying to learn\u2014because being the baby of the family and having two older brothers, there is such an age gap between me and my brothers. When I was coming of age, my older brother was already married and out of the house. It was almost like I was an only child, so there were high levels of selfishness I never considered. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, when I got married\u2014when I would come in with something to eat, and I ran through a drive-thru, she\u2019s like, \u201cWhere\u2019s mine?\u201d I\u2019m like: \u201cWhat do you mean, \u2018Where\u2019s yours?\u2019 You should have gotten yourself something to eat,\u201d\u2014stuff, where you are just like, \u201cBro, you shouldn\u2019t even think like that!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe comes from a family of four siblings. They would get a bag of cheeseburgers from McDonald\u2019s<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014no fries\u2014and they would share, so she came from a very communal environment. I came from a very\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> \u2014independent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014independent environment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had to unlearn independence \/ she had to unlearn co-dependence; and we had to allow the Holy Spirit to form interdependence. It took time; but once we had that foundation of interdependence, it strengthened us and broke down more barriers to our oneness. That is what God used to propel us into everything you see in the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it\u2019s just what you said\u2014God gives a man to a woman and a woman to a man as a good gift. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob, we talk about this at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>. Have you received your spouse as God\u2019s gift to you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cEven in her imperfections\/in his brokenness, have you received your spouse as God\u2019s perfect gift for you?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> That\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And \u201cIf you\u2019ll do that, it\u2019ll take your eyes off of the weaknesses\/\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cthe deficiencies\u2014and you both have them.\u201d You\u2019ve shared them here, but that\u2019s the beginning of a great marriage right there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI truly believe that. I affirm everything you\u2019re saying; because that\u2019s when I began to realize\u2014and in Spanish, it\u2019s <em>machismo<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s the pride\/it\u2019s the arrogance of a man that: \u201cI\u2019m supposed to have all these things together. I don\u2019t show weakness \/ I don\u2019t show emotion,\u201d\u2014I have to fight against that a lot. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was a turning point\u2014is that, when the Lord used our brokenness from filing bankruptcy\u2014to losing the dream house that we wanted, to moving in to a two-bedroom \/ one bathroom, infested with mold and cockroaches\u2014when we saw those turns, some of our most joyful memories were, in poverty, after we came out of the bankruptcy and everything; because it was there that we felt like that was just a symbol of what God was doing in our lives\u2014breaking down the idols, calling out our sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Confessing and repentance were a reality. Then, I began to recognize\u2014like what you said: \u201cMy wife is a gift given to me by Jesus. I am a steward. I must empower. I must allow her, where she is strong, to be strong; and I catch my cues from her in the areas of her strength\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cvice versa.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cbut then vice versa. I\u2019ve got to step up, and be strong, and lead in the areas where I\u2019m strong so that she can feel led and catch her cues from me in those areas that I am strong that she\u2019s weak in.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where that complementary aspect began\u2014to recognize: \u201cElicia is not my hindrance. She\u2019s a helpmate. I need to learn how to stop being a hindrance to her and start serving my wife as a helpmate, not a hindrance.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you were doing\u2014and you\u2019ve done marriage counseling since you\u2019ve been in the pastorate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014if you were doing marriage counseling today for the two of you, when you were engaged, what kind of counsel and advice would you give to that couple about where they were headed and what they needed most? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> One of the things I would definitely say is that the premarital counseling was good; but I feel like people need to have other people that have been married longer than they have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You need some mentors; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> \u2014some mentors, who just really come alongside of them. I feel like that\u2019s what I would have counseled\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to say: \u201cGo, hang tight to them. Find those people. Ask God to show you who they are and hang tight to them so they can walk with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAlso, taking their spiritual walks with the Lord as important, but also taking it seriously enough to say: \u201cOkay; I need discipleship. I need accountability, personally, in my life and vice versa for my spouse. Then, also, encouraging each other in our spiritual walks with the Lord; because a lot of times we\u2019ll take it and say: \u2018We\u2019ll individualize. For me, I\u2019m just going to worry about myself.\u2019 It\u2019s like, \u2018No; I just need to be as equally concerned about my husband\u2019s walk with the Lord as my own.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say those are the things I would definitely counsel us to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes; if I was there; and it was six months out before the wedding day, I would say: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to take you under my wing, and I\u2019m going to pour into you the things of God\u2019s Word but in a practical aspect. I\u2019m going to call out all the nuances of your sin that you have nobody in your life that you are accountable to. I\u2019m going to talk through your sexual issues. I\u2019m going to talk to your lack of financial stewardship. I\u2019m going to talk about your lack of backbone and cowardiceness in the midst of conflict, and you\u2019re an avoider. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to talk through your lack of appropriating biblical theology to practical living; and your stumbling block, right now, Damon\u2014that is stopping that\u2014is you\u2019re not having heart transformation from the Holy Spirit, who lives inside of you. You\u2019re not surrendering the idols of your heart and life to your Lord Jesus Christ. He\u2019s got competition in your heart right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would call all those things out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s crazy is\u2014in all honesty, from me being an older millennial to then a younger millennial\u2014I know I would receive it; because I know, deep down, that\u2019s what I really want. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, we\u2019d like to think that a young man or a young woman could get all of these things working right before they get married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But the reality is one of the reason God brings us together in marriage is so we can work out these things; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s why you have to start from a foundation that says: \u201cLook, we\u2019re in this for life. We\u2019re committed to one another,\u201d because that keeps you from fleeing when things get tough and keeps you right in the crucible God wants you in, convicting you to grow you up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely.<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Absolutely; you\u2019re absolutely right\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s to God\u2019s glory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is not a superficial statement at all; but that is where, I think, we still are broken by the comments that are given to us by people; because we bucked the trend, as millennials. We got married in our early 20s; so, now, there are millennial couples that are like, \u201cMan, we are three years in; and you guys have been doing this for fifteen years.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cThat\u2019s a lifetime.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> It is. No; it sincerely is. That\u2019s where I\u2019m like, \u201cMan, Lord, the way You have written our story is unique; but it\u2019s not too unique that\u2019s it is not relatable.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> And I think that\u2019s where the vulnerability and the transparency comes in; because when they hear there is still present tense sin struggles in my and Elicia\u2019s life\u2014that we\u2019re not perfect; that we do have arguments \/ we don\u2019t see eye to eye; I need to stop working so much and spend more time with my daughters and my son\u2014when they hear those confessions of progress and progressive sanctification,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Yes; amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014then they are like, \u201cOkay; so I\u2019m still going to be in progressive sanctification in year 15 in as much as year 1\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cor 10 months before we get married.\u201d That\u2019s a pathway of hope that they see; and the one that they are pursuing is not Damon and Elicia\u2014it\u2019s Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And can we just say, \u201cWhen you get to years 35, and 40, and 45, you\u2019re still going to be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s what I was getting ready to say, too, Bob\u2014there\u2019s no opting out of this process; okay? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; but you did say something\u2014you said, \u201cYou don\u2019t use the D-word.\u201d And I want you <em>both<\/em> to unpack that, because this culture throws that around as both a threat and a living alternative. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why do you not use that word? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Well, I have to confess\u2014in the beginning, I did use that word. I did use that word, because I felt like that was the easy way out; you know? I didn\u2019t see this as something long-term and worth fighting for; because I was just, again, very spiritually immature\u2014not understanding that: \u201cWow, God has done so much in my life; and He has given me this gift as a part of my sanctification. Why am I resisting it?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut now, seeing how God has redeemed a lot of our story for the greater good\/for His glory, I feel like God has really showed us what it means to <em>fight<\/em> for the oneness\u2014fight for the togetherness \/ fight for the fact that we\u2019re not supposed to be fighting against each other\u2014but we\u2019re going to fight against the world, our flesh, and the evil one. The fight comes as we\u2019re standing together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI feel like fighting together for our marriage has been the best testimony for us to give to our kids\u2014saying: \u201cYou know, this is not perfect,\u201d\u2014but being real, and authentic, and saying\u2014\u201cYou know what? We\u2019re going to mess up, but we\u2019re going to keep repenting\u2014keep confessing \/ keep working this out\u2014because we know that God has given us a reason to do that by giving us His love first.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> D.A., before you share your response to my question, I want you to share with our listeners: \u201cHow did her threats of divorce, early on in your marriage\u2014how did that impact you?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> It hurt. It set me back; because partially, Elicia did it for shock value. She would always say these extreme statements. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say\u2014the only way I would tell her is: \u201cStop using terminal language.\u201d She would say statements like: \u201cI\u2019m done!\u201d \u201cI\u2019m finished,\u201d \u201cI want a divorce.\u201d I\u2019m like: \u201cYou\u2019ve got to stop using terminal language; because every time you do that, that\u2019s like dropping an atom bomb on my heart. I don\u2019t know how many times I\u2019m going to recover from that, emotionally, Elicia,\u201d\u2014I had to tell her that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen she began to recognize, \u201cYes; I didn\u2019t really mean it,\u201d because that was the problem\u2014I started to <em>believe<\/em> her. I started to <em>believe<\/em> that she did not want to be with me\u2014that she was only with me because I was the provider\u2014so I saw myself as an ATM. [Laughter] When I began to tell her the emotional damages that that terminal language caused in my heart, she learned to put her tongue under submission of the Holy Spirit and refrain from saying that type of terminal language to me\u2014to which, she will now confront conflict\u2014or me and my mistake or poor habits\u2014and she won\u2019t say, \u201cI\u2019m done.\u201d She will say, \u201cHere\u2019s an issue that we need to deal with.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> It\u2019s no longer terminal\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014but she\u2019s actually bringing me in to the privilege of hearing her heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know how many couples I\u2019ve talked to, over the years, where I\u2019ve said: \u201cThat\u2019s the highest card in your hand\u2014that\u2019s the trump card. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cIt trumps everything else.\u201d People will throw it casually around in an attempt to try to power out whatever else is going on: \u201cSo, you\u2019re coming at me with this. I\u2019m going to throw the trump card and shut you down.\u201d There is no harder stone you can throw in a marriage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Oh, absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014than to say: \u201cMaybe, we should get out of this. Maybe, we should shut this down.\u201d That\u2019s where couples have got to understand: \u201cThe seed that is planted in the soul of the other person, when you threaten that in a moment of anger\u2014that seed stays there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cfor a long, long time.\u201d The next time there is conflict, there is this little voice in your head saying, \u201cShe wants out again.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, the whole stability of everything in your marriage is always on\u2014well, you live in California. You know what it\u2019s like to live on a fault line. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Shaky ground; yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What about you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> We believe that marriage is an illustration for the gospel, and every Christian home should be a billboard for the gospel\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the reality of saying: \u201cDivorce\u2014that is contrary to the doctrine of reconciliation\u2014\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014that is contrary to the finished work of Jesus Christ.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we\u2019re going to say: \u201cLook, I\u2019m done with this. We\u2019re going to dissolve this. We\u2019re going to go our separate ways,\u201d I don\u2019t see Jesus doing that in Scripture. When He speaks to the seven churches in Asia, He doesn\u2019t use that type of language. And when I look at the redemptive component\u2014and how Jesus is going to make all things new\u2014like that\u2019s what I look at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI look at\u2014as one sister in our church put it\u2014this is the only time Elicia and I will have the opportunity to tell our flesh, \u201cNo,\u201d and say, \u201cYes,\u201d to the Spirit of God that lives inside of us; because when we\u2019re in glory, there is going to be no more struggle with sin; there is going to be no more battle; [and] there is going to be no more scars. This is the time that God has given for us to maximize those opportunities to walk out by denying our flesh \/ denying the things that we want to say in those moments or even moving forward with carnal realities and saying: \u201cNo; you\u2019re not my god. My comfort is not my God; Jesus is my God. \u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDivorce is the most comfortable move right now that I think in my mind; but I don\u2019t think of all the intricate nuances that will come from that type of decision; so I need to say: \u2018No,\u2019 to my flesh; \u2018No,\u2019 to what I want; \u2018No,\u2019 to my anger\u2014it is not to be my master. Christ is my master; so I need to subject my wounded, bleeding heart to Jesus in this moment.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and Jesus is the one who has said, \u201cI will never\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cleave you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cleave you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cleave you or forsake you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cLo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve talked with couples\u2014again, I\u2019ve said: \u201cI know the pain you\u2019re in right now. If you went out to a doctor\u2014and you had that pain in your leg\u2014and the doctor said, \u2018Well, we can cut it off, but then you\u2019ll be a one-legged man for the rest of your life; or we can do the hard work of correcting that pain and fixing it, and you can run again.\u2019\u201d Some people go, \u2018The pain is so bad; just cut it off, Doc.\u2019 I just go, \u2018Think about the choice you\u2019re making for the rest\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> That\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201c\u2019of your life when you do that. If there is a way to fix this, let\u2019s get in there and fix it, surgically, rather than amputating and hoping that the pain goes away as a result.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cDivorce is not a solution. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> You\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s an exchange of problems.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> That\u2019s good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s why the Scriptures and the Book of Genesis begin, setting the standard: \u201cTherefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.\u201d The command is to run the race all the way to the finish line\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014together\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elicia:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because you promised, before a living God; but there is a generation of children, who desperately need to see some people\u2014even in their brokenness\u2014just finish the race. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>D.A.:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And a lot of couples just need some mentoring\u2014some counsel\/some instruction\u2014to know what to do.
