Our host is Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. Okay; let\u2019s pull back and look at the big picture: \u201cWhat is it that we are supposed to do, as parents, as we raise the next generation? What\u2019s the priority? What\u2019s job one?\u201d We\u2019re going to talk about that today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. I think I\u2019ve heard you say\u2014I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve called it a mistake or not\u2014but you said something about the fact that you wrote a book on parenting teenagers before you were done parenting teenagers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the big mistakes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; I just wanted to make sure. I didn\u2019t want to put words in your mouth. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014of our\u2014of <em>our <\/em>lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara joins us. Would you agree, Sweetie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it was rather brash, I think, to write on parenting when we hadn\u2019t finished.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The truth is\u2014it\u2019s a great book. The concepts in the book are solid, and I\u2019ve referred to it many times as we were in the process of raising our kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we paid the price for many of those lessons, Bob; but we were not done raising teenagers. [Laughter] What we had to do, on numerous occasions, is go back and rip pages out or reread what we\u2019ve written.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, now, here we are\u2014and you have finished the process of raising your children\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and you decided, \u201cOkay; now, it\u2019s safe to write a book on parenting,\u201d\u2014right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We did. This is something that I\u2019ve wanted to do\u2014actually, <em>we\u2019ve<\/em> wanted to do since we were a part of starting FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, all the way back to 1976. Barbara and I had been working with high school students nationwide, and we saw the need and really wanted to make an impact on teenagers and the next generation. The way we did that was by helping people stay married \/ have a good marriage; but also, ultimately, one day, I wanted to get to this topic of equipping parents to know how to do\u2014not just marriage God\u2019s way\u2014but do parenting His way as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Barbara, I\u2019ll ask you; and then I\u2019ll ask you as well, Dennis. If you could only speak or write about one or the other\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, you\u2019re going to do that to her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014marriage or parenting?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Oh, that\u2019s a terrible question. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If I said, \u201cFor the rest of your life, you have to either talk about parenting or you have to talk about marriage,\u201d which would you pick?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think\u2014I know the answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I think I would have to say marriage, because not all couples have children; and if you don\u2019t get your marriage right, you can\u2019t get parenting right. So I would say marriage over parenting if I had to pick one\u2014if you\u2019re going to force me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I thought she would have said motherhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That wasn\u2019t an option, though! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s parenting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I\u2019m very precise. Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Being a mom and raising kids has been a passion of your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, yes; and I loved being a mom; I loved raising kids. It really was\u2014it was stressful; it was hard, but it was rewarding. It was what I felt like I was made to do in those years that I was doing it. I was very engaged, very committed, very involved\u2014reading things all the time\u2014trying to improve, trying to be a great mom, trying to give my kids what they needed; so I was very invested.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If you had to pick?\u2014marriage or parenting\u2014and that\u2019s all you could talk about \/ write about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, here\u2019s the thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to answer the way Barbara did, because that\u2019s where we have been focused over the past 41 years\u2014we have been focusing on marriage. We have done a lot of parenting work\u2014we\u2019ve written a lot of books on parenting; we\u2019ve had a conference that we created on parenting, which we mothballed until recently, Bob. You know that we\u2019re finally getting a chance to roll this out\u2014a parenting conference in a box, which is a small group kit to help folks know how to do the art of parenting, which is also the name of a book that Barbara and I just completed as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve been wanting to get after this and do this for some time; and I\u2019m excited, because these are some of the best days for FamilyLife to help families that have ever existed over four decades.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You have shared this story with our listeners before, but there\u2019s a story from when you were raising your kids that kind of gets to the heart of the parenting issue; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur daughter, Deborah, came to me one time\u2014do you remember how old, Sweetheart, she was?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No; but I would guess 13\/14\u2014early teens.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014just in that age that kind of knows it all, you know. She came and she said, \u201cDad, I want to be able to do what I want to do, with whoever I want to do it with, whenever I want to do it, for as long as I want to do it.\u201d I said, \u201cReally, sweetheart?!\u201d [Laughter] I said, \u201cWhat if your parakeet came to you,\u201d\u2014and the parakeet\u2019s name was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014Sweet Pea. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sweet Pea\u2014\u201cSweet Pea came to you and said, \u2018I want to be able to do whatever I want to do, with whoever I want to do it, for as long as I can possibly do it,\u2019 and Sweet Pea said to you, \u2018I\u2019d like to go out on the porch and play with the cat.\u2019 What would you say?\u201d She said: \u201cOh, Dad! That\u2019s silly!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u201cThat\u2019s dumb.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cThat\u2019s dumb.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>She was disgusted with him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She was. And I said: \u201cHere\u2019s the thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGod\u2019s given you parents to help\u2014not cage you up\u2014but to create boundaries that protect you. Sweet Pea doesn\u2019t need to play with the cat.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just the beginning of the teenage years for Deborah; in all fairness to her, in some form or another, all six of ours asked a question very, very similar to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, every adolescent asks that question. You asked the question\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, even if they don\u2019t verbalize it, they <em>feel<\/em> it; and it\u2019s what they want.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s this emerging independence\u2014we want to call the shots\u2014all of us felt it; so I\u2019m not surprised that Deborah felt that way, but she did not respond well to the Sweet Pea analogy that you used.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No; and God, in His sense of humor\u2014God is so mischievous, and I mean that in a holy way\u2014not evil\u2014just holy mischievous. [Laughter] He has a way of getting our attention. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot long after that, we had the opportunity to travel, as a family. We needed to find someone that would take care of Sweet Pea, so we got a nearby family to take care of our favorite parakeet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>So a family down the street that we knew well\u2014some of our kids matched up and they played together\u2014we called them and asked them. They said, \u201cSure,\u201d they\u2019d be delighted to. But we couldn\u2019t make the handoff occur before we left, so we left Sweet Pea in the cage in the house. They came by later that day\u2014after we\u2019d left town, gotten on our plane, and flown off\u2014to pick up Sweet Pea, and keep the bird for the week, and get the bird feed and everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the younger kids in the family was tasked with the responsibility of taking care of the bird that week. He was going to earn a little money by doing this\u2014we were going to pay him. So anyway, they came to the house, got the bird, got the parakeet cage, and the food and everything, and they were walking out to their car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was January, too, by the way, which is an interesting piece of the story; because, as they walked from our front door to their car, the tray on the bottom of the parakeet cage came unhooked. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt dropped open; and the bird saw his chance at freedom, and dropped through, and took off flying up into the trees. He got his freedom sooner than expected.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I can only imagine those parents in your front yard, looking at the parakeet in the tree and going, \u201cWhat do we do?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I know. Yes; my friend\u2019s name was Jessica, and she just was panicked. She went, \u201cOh my.\u201d So they tried to coax it down. They put food in their hands and offered food, you know, trying to get the bird to come down; and <em>nothing<\/em> worked. They tried for nearly an hour, and the bird was in the tree and was <em>not<\/em> coming down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, we\u2019re away on our trip when we get the phone call that the parakeet had flown the coop, literally; okay?\u00a0 We tried to time the telling of the story to Deborah\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when it would perhaps be a little bit of a shock absorber\u2014but there was no good time to tell her. This completely bummed her up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, the rest of the trip was miserable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, how long passed, Barbara?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Just a couple of days\u2014say we got home on a Friday; maybe on Monday morning our neighbor, who lives up the hill\u2014he called. Dennis had gone to work; it was about ten or eleven in the morning\u2014the kids were off at school, and I was home alone. He called and said, \u201cI have something really interesting I want to ask you.\u201d He said, \u201cDo you guys have a parakeet?\u201d I said, \u201cWell, we <em>did<\/em> have a parakeet.\u201d He said, \u201cOh, okay.\u201d He begins to tell me this story about how <em>he<\/em> found Sweet Pea, and I was <em>so amazed<\/em> that the bird had survived.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He found Sweet Pea <em>where<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s a part of the story. [Laughter] I called Dennis and I told him\u2014I said, \u201cOur neighbor has Sweet Pea.\u201d He said, \u201cYou\u2019re kidding.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDeborah was not happy; so I wanted to go get her at school, and pull her out of class, and tell her. Dennis said, \u201cDon\u2019t you dare go tell her.\u201d He said, \u201cWe need to make a big impression on her about what happened and how God spared this parakeet for her.\u201d I said, \u201cOkay; great\u201d; so I didn\u2019t go tell her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What happened was\u2014Bob, our neighbor, was watching TV, and he heard a thump on the window. Bob just walks out, sticks his finger up in the air, kind of horizontal to the ground, and Sweet Pea flies right down to it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He turns around and walks in the house, carrying the bird.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, that was how we would get Sweet Pea to land on us, just put the finger up horizontally and let the bird fly down. So he put Sweet Pea in a spare cage that they had\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>They just happened to have a cage!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and went to town to get some parakeet food.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; and so while he was in town to get parakeet food, after he got what he needed at the pet store, he stopped at a yogurt place on the way home. It was real busy, so he had to stand in line. Bob\u2019s very chatty\/very conversational, so he started talking to the guy in front of him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs they were talking, the guy said to him, \u201cSo, what are you doing today?\u201d Bob said, \u201cOh, I had to come into town to get parakeet feed for this bird that I found.\u201d The guy said, \u201cWell, where do you live?\u201d Bob told him where he lived; and the guy said, \u201cIs that anywhere near the Raineys?\u201d Bob said, \u201cYes; I live next door to them.\u201d The guy said: \u201cOh. I\u2019m the kids\u2019 youth pastor.\u201d He said, \u201cI think they have a parakeet,\u201d because Bob had said\u2014for this parakeet that he found\u2014he had no idea where it had come from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s 15 miles from where we live\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014that yogurt store; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014the yogurt place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Bob goes, \u201cOh, well maybe that is where it came from.\u201d When he called Monday morning, he was confirming, \u201cDo you have a parakeet that is now missing?\u2014because if you do, I have it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I told Barbara\u2014I said, \u201cAfter dinner, let\u2019s just drive the point home with Deborah.\u201d After dinner, I just stopped, and I looked at Deborah, and I said [emotion in voice], \u201cDeborah, God really loves you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And she was still not happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No; not happy at all. She wouldn\u2019t look at me. I said: \u201cDeborah, look at me. <em>God really loves you<\/em>.\u201d She still wouldn\u2019t look. I said: \u201cDeborah, God loves you. Bob, our neighbor, has your parakeet.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, at that point, two things happened. First of all, our daughter, Laura, had been sitting with her head\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, the very first time you said to Deborah: \u201cI want to tell you something. Can I tell you that God really loves you?\u201d Laura piped up and said, \u201cDo I have to listen to this?\u201d [Laughter] Because she <em>knew<\/em> that her dad was about to talk to her sister about something\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014some story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014some lesson, because she was not happy. [Laughter] She\u2019s thinking: \u201cThis isn\u2019t about me. Why do I have to be here?\u201d So she said, \u201cDo I have to listen to this?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis said, \u201cYou do have to listen to this,\u201d and Laura went, \u201cOoh!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, at the point I told Deborah that the parakeet was up the hill with Bob\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Laura screamed and said, \u201cWhat?!\u201d And Deborah <em>slowly<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; like an ice cube.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014almost imperceptibly, at a point, began to smile. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>She was real skeptical\u2014she said, \u201cReally?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; we walked up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>All four of us marched up the hill to the neighbors\u2019\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014reclaimed the bird, put Sweet Pea back in her home, and all was well. But we just said, \u201cDeborah, God really loves you and is looking out for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, do you think Deborah every tied together the moral of the story?\u2014that you don\u2019t let the parakeet out of the cage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014to go play with the cat?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to go play with the cat?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I resisted\u2014[Laughter]\u2014giving the moral of the story!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m a little surprised! Are you a little surprised that he resisted? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Keith, our engineer, is surprised! I mean, it was so <em>obvious<\/em>; it was just so obvious.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it was <em>so<\/em> obvious that it was God\u2014because it was January; the parakeet had been outside for over 24 hours; it was really cold\u2014so that it actually survived the night, and then showed up at our neighbors\u2019 and banged on his window and not ours, where nobody was home\u2014I mean, so many things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, that Bob would run into that youth group guy\u2014I mean, Bob never went to church. He didn\u2019t know where we went to church. I mean, it was so obvious that God was <em>all over<\/em> this story that I think we <em>knew<\/em> that somehow this was going to sink in; somehow\u2014whether we said anything or not\u2014it was just too big for her to miss it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the moral of the story for parents is: \u201cGod has your back\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Is that it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; that is it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, you know, Deuteronomy 6 comes right after the giving of the Ten Commandments; and right after those commandments are given, God commands the parents of Israel\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014He says, \u201cYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and you shall teach your children to do the same.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParenting is God\u2019s idea; He loves our kids more than we do. As parents, so many times we feel so helpless; but God does care about our kids. Now, He may not do it in our timing; but He does have a way of getting our children\u2019s attention, because, really, children are God\u2019s statement that the next generation must take our place. What we must do is impart to our children the truth about God, the experience of God, and also the gospel of God\u2014how they can know Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s our assignment, Bob; and that\u2019s really why Barbara and I wrote the book, <em>The Art of Parenting<\/em>. We want to call a generation of parents\u2014and there are some 16 million millennial parents right now\u2014another one million have been added this past year\u2014who are raising their kids according to some kind of plan.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe question is: \u201cIs it the best-selling-book-in-history plan?\u2014is it the Bible?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we want to do\u2014and what we\u2019ve done in the book\u2014is break down the Scriptures and give folks some very simple, practical ways\u2014but biblically-anchored\u2014of how to raise the next generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I have found that parents, who are interested in parenting material\u2014whether it\u2019s a video series, or a book, or even what we\u2019re talking about on the radio\u2014if it\u2019s focused on parenting, they tend to be new parents who are aware that they\u2019re in over their head; because it doesn\u2019t take long, after you\u2019ve had a child, before you go, \u201cOh, I don\u2019t know everything I\u2019m supposed to be doing.\u201d By the time parents are raising teenagers, I think a lot of them think, \u201cWell, if we haven\u2019t gotten it by now, there\u2019s no hope for us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou wrote this book with new parents and parents of teens in mind\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014this is for everybody who\u2019s still in the midst of trying to raise their kids; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Exactly. If you still have children at home, even if it\u2019s one who is 17, there is something for you in this book; because it\u2019s never too late. That\u2019s one of the big messages that we want to send\u2014that: \u201cIt\u2019s never too late to impact your kids for Christ. It\u2019s never too late to make investments in their lives for things that will last forever.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe <em>feel<\/em> it more acutely, I think, with newborns, and toddlers, and preschoolers; because it\u2019s so new and fresh; and we\u2019re so acutely aware of what we\u2019re missing. We\u2019re much more worn down when our kids get to be teenagers, and it\u2019s easy to give up. But God doesn\u2019t want us to give up, because He\u2019s always available and wants to intersect our kids\u2019 lives at any stage so that we come to Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you know parents, in the midst of the teen years\u2014they get exhausted \/ they get discouraged\u2014they think, \u201cIf we haven\u2019t figured it out by now, it\u2019s helpless for us to figure it out.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That really is a lie. We know the feeling\u2014we\u2019ve experienced that feeling. In fact, yesterday, Barbara talked to one our children\u2014adult children\u2014who has a teenager or two, and our daughter was discouraged. Just going through the teenage years had just sapped her strength and her courage. What we want to do, Bob, is\u2014we want to give parents courage to hang in there \/ not quit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBasically, what we\u2019ve broken parenting down into are really four areas. Number one: relationships\u2014relationship with God and with one another. That\u2019s our assignment\u2014to train our kids to know how to relate to God properly and also how to get along with human beings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, character\u2014that\u2019s the Book of Proverbs\u2014being wise and not a fool; choosing right and not wrong. That\u2019s a big part of being parents today\u2014equipping children with boundaries.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe third area is identity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListen to me\u2014there is identity theft taking place today that is far more important than somebody stealing your credit card. There is a sexual identity theft, a spiritual identity theft, and also an emotional identity theft that we talk about in the book to help parents know how to raise kids, who reflect who God is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFinally, there\u2019s a child\u2019s purpose\u2014that\u2019s their mission. We believe a child was designed by God to be raised and then released\u2014released toward the bull\u2019s eye on the target that God has for them. If you\u2019re not sending your child to that destination on purpose, the world does have a plan for your child; and it\u2019s not a good plan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>These four areas you came to after spending months poring through the Scriptures to say, \u201cWhat does the Bible say about parenting?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Actually, <em>years<\/em>, Bob; because I spent the better part of one year studying the Scriptures, and Barbara and I would talk about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut over the next 25 years, we confirmed it. Over, and over, and over again, these four areas really were distilled down into the essence of what God\u2019s trying to do in our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne last story before we\u2019re done here. In writing the book, we had to decide how to start the book. We asked Deborah for permission to tell this story, and we were at the Creation Museum with 13 of our grandkids and 5 of our adult children and their spouses. We had a little time each evening where Papa\u2014where Papa would have a little lesson for the kids of what they\u2019d seen at the Ark or what they\u2019d seen at the Creation Museum.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI have a little story I\u2019d like to read.\u201d I pulled open the manuscript on my computer and I began to read this story. Deborah\u2019s two daughters were in the room\u2014they were all ears. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were listening, because\u2014one\u2019s about ten and the other\u2019s about six or seven\u2014and they\u2019re just nearing that time when they\u2019re going to want to go do whatever they want to go do, with whoever they want to it with, for as long as they want. Deborah was just grinning, because she\u2019s a great mom and is doing a great job at those kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and hearing you tell that story\u2014and then thinking about what Deborah shared as part of the<em> Art of Parenting<\/em>\u2122 video series\u2014some of her comments are priceless. Our host is Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. Okay; let\u2019s pull back and look at the big picture: \u201cWhat is it that we are supposed to do, as parents, as we raise the next generation? What\u2019s the priority? What\u2019s job one?\u201d We\u2019re going to talk about that today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. I think I\u2019ve heard you say\u2014I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve called it a mistake or not\u2014but you said something about the fact that you wrote a book on parenting teenagers before you were done parenting teenagers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the big mistakes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; I just wanted to make sure. I didn\u2019t want to put words in your mouth. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014of our\u2014of <em>our <\/em>lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara joins us. Would you agree, Sweetie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it was rather brash, I think, to write on parenting when we hadn\u2019t finished.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The truth is\u2014it\u2019s a great book. The concepts in the book are solid, and I\u2019ve referred to it many times as we were in the process of raising our kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we paid the price for many of those lessons, Bob; but we were not done raising teenagers. [Laughter] What we had to do, on numerous occasions, is go back and rip pages out or reread what we\u2019ve written.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, now, here we are\u2014and you have finished the process of raising your children\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and you decided, \u201cOkay; now, it\u2019s safe to write a book on parenting,\u201d\u2014right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We did. This is something that I\u2019ve wanted to do\u2014actually, <em>we\u2019ve<\/em> wanted to do since we were a part of starting FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, all the way back to 1976. Barbara and I had been working with high school students nationwide, and we saw the need and really wanted to make an impact on teenagers and the next generation. The way we did that was by helping people stay married \/ have a good marriage; but also, ultimately, one day, I wanted to get to this topic of equipping parents to know how to do\u2014not just marriage God\u2019s way\u2014but do parenting His way as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Barbara, I\u2019ll ask you; and then I\u2019ll ask you as well, Dennis. If you could only speak or write about one or the other\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, you\u2019re going to do that to her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014marriage or parenting?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Oh, that\u2019s a terrible question. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If I said, \u201cFor the rest of your life, you have to either talk about parenting or you have to talk about marriage,\u201d which would you pick?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think\u2014I know the answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I think I would have to say marriage, because not all couples have children; and if you don\u2019t get your marriage right, you can\u2019t get parenting right. So I would say marriage over parenting if I had to pick one\u2014if you\u2019re going to force me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I thought she would have said motherhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That wasn\u2019t an option, though! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s parenting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I\u2019m very precise. Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Being a mom and raising kids has been a passion of your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, yes; and I loved being a mom; I loved raising kids. It really was\u2014it was stressful; it was hard, but it was rewarding. It was what I felt like I was made to do in those years that I was doing it. I was very engaged, very committed, very involved\u2014reading things all the time\u2014trying to improve, trying to be a great mom, trying to give my kids what they needed; so I was very invested.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If you had to pick?\u2014marriage or parenting\u2014and that\u2019s all you could talk about \/ write about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, here\u2019s the thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to answer the way Barbara did, because that\u2019s where we have been focused over the past 41 years\u2014we have been focusing on marriage. We have done a lot of parenting work\u2014we\u2019ve written a lot of books on parenting; we\u2019ve had a conference that we created on parenting, which we mothballed until recently, Bob. You know that we\u2019re finally getting a chance to roll this out\u2014a parenting conference in a box, which is a small group kit to help folks know how to do the art of parenting, which is also the name of a book that Barbara and I just completed as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve been wanting to get after this and do this for some time; and I\u2019m excited, because these are some of the best days for FamilyLife to help families that have ever existed over four decades.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You have shared this story with our listeners before, but there\u2019s a story from when you were raising your kids that kind of gets to the heart of the parenting issue; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur daughter, Deborah, came to me one time\u2014do you remember how old, Sweetheart, she was?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No; but I would guess 13\/14\u2014early teens.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014just in that age that kind of knows it all, you know. She came and she said, \u201cDad, I want to be able to do what I want to do, with whoever I want to do it with, whenever I want to do it, for as long as I want to do it.\u201d I said, \u201cReally, sweetheart?!\u201d [Laughter] I said, \u201cWhat if your parakeet came to you,\u201d\u2014and the parakeet\u2019s name was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014Sweet Pea. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sweet Pea\u2014\u201cSweet Pea came to you and said, \u2018I want to be able to do whatever I want to do, with whoever I want to do it, for as long as I can possibly do it,\u2019 and Sweet Pea said to you, \u2018I\u2019d like to go out on the porch and play with the cat.\u2019 What would you say?\u201d She said: \u201cOh, Dad! That\u2019s silly!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u201cThat\u2019s dumb.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cThat\u2019s dumb.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>She was disgusted with him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She was. And I said: \u201cHere\u2019s the thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGod\u2019s given you parents to help\u2014not cage you up\u2014but to create boundaries that protect you. Sweet Pea doesn\u2019t need to play with the cat.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just the beginning of the teenage years for Deborah; in all fairness to her, in some form or another, all six of ours asked a question very, very similar to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, every adolescent asks that question. You asked the question\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, even if they don\u2019t verbalize it, they <em>feel<\/em> it; and it\u2019s what they want.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s this emerging independence\u2014we want to call the shots\u2014all of us felt it; so I\u2019m not surprised that Deborah felt that way, but she did not respond well to the Sweet Pea analogy that you used.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No; and God, in His sense of humor\u2014God is so mischievous, and I mean that in a holy way\u2014not evil\u2014just holy mischievous. [Laughter] He has a way of getting our attention. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot long after that, we had the opportunity to travel, as a family. We needed to find someone that would take care of Sweet Pea, so we got a nearby family to take care of our favorite parakeet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>So a family down the street that we knew well\u2014some of our kids matched up and they played together\u2014we called them and asked them. They said, \u201cSure,\u201d they\u2019d be delighted to. But we couldn\u2019t make the handoff occur before we left, so we left Sweet Pea in the cage in the house. They came by later that day\u2014after we\u2019d left town, gotten on our plane, and flown off\u2014to pick up Sweet Pea, and keep the bird for the week, and get the bird feed and everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the younger kids in the family was tasked with the responsibility of taking care of the bird that week. He was going to earn a little money by doing this\u2014we were going to pay him. So anyway, they came to the house, got the bird, got the parakeet cage, and the food and everything, and they were walking out to their car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was January, too, by the way, which is an interesting piece of the story; because, as they walked from our front door to their car, the tray on the bottom of the parakeet cage came unhooked. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt dropped open; and the bird saw his chance at freedom, and dropped through, and took off flying up into the trees. He got his freedom sooner than expected.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I can only imagine those parents in your front yard, looking at the parakeet in the tree and going, \u201cWhat do we do?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I know. Yes; my friend\u2019s name was Jessica, and she just was panicked. She went, \u201cOh my.\u201d So they tried to coax it down. They put food in their hands and offered food, you know, trying to get the bird to come down; and <em>nothing<\/em> worked. They tried for nearly an hour, and the bird was in the tree and was <em>not<\/em> coming down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, we\u2019re away on our trip when we get the phone call that the parakeet had flown the coop, literally; okay?\u00a0 We tried to time the telling of the story to Deborah\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when it would perhaps be a little bit of a shock absorber\u2014but there was no good time to tell her. This completely bummed her up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, the rest of the trip was miserable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, how long passed, Barbara?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Just a couple of days\u2014say we got home on a Friday; maybe on Monday morning our neighbor, who lives up the hill\u2014he called. Dennis had gone to work; it was about ten or eleven in the morning\u2014the kids were off at school, and I was home alone. He called and said, \u201cI have something really interesting I want to ask you.\u201d He said, \u201cDo you guys have a parakeet?\u201d I said, \u201cWell, we <em>did<\/em> have a parakeet.\u201d He said, \u201cOh, okay.\u201d He begins to tell me this story about how <em>he<\/em> found Sweet Pea, and I was <em>so amazed<\/em> that the bird had survived.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He found Sweet Pea <em>where<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s a part of the story. [Laughter] I called Dennis and I told him\u2014I said, \u201cOur neighbor has Sweet Pea.\u201d He said, \u201cYou\u2019re kidding.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDeborah was not happy; so I wanted to go get her at school, and pull her out of class, and tell her. Dennis said, \u201cDon\u2019t you dare go tell her.\u201d He said, \u201cWe need to make a big impression on her about what happened and how God spared this parakeet for her.\u201d I said, \u201cOkay; great\u201d; so I didn\u2019t go tell her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What happened was\u2014Bob, our neighbor, was watching TV, and he heard a thump on the window. Bob just walks out, sticks his finger up in the air, kind of horizontal to the ground, and Sweet Pea flies right down to it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He turns around and walks in the house, carrying the bird.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, that was how we would get Sweet Pea to land on us, just put the finger up horizontally and let the bird fly down. So he put Sweet Pea in a spare cage that they had\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>They just happened to have a cage!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and went to town to get some parakeet food.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; and so while he was in town to get parakeet food, after he got what he needed at the pet store, he stopped at a yogurt place on the way home. It was real busy, so he had to stand in line. Bob\u2019s very chatty\/very conversational, so he started talking to the guy in front of him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs they were talking, the guy said to him, \u201cSo, what are you doing today?\u201d Bob said, \u201cOh, I had to come into town to get parakeet feed for this bird that I found.\u201d The guy said, \u201cWell, where do you live?\u201d Bob told him where he lived; and the guy said, \u201cIs that anywhere near the Raineys?\u201d Bob said, \u201cYes; I live next door to them.\u201d The guy said: \u201cOh. I\u2019m the kids\u2019 youth pastor.\u201d He said, \u201cI think they have a parakeet,\u201d because Bob had said\u2014for this parakeet that he found\u2014he had no idea where it had come from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s 15 miles from where we live\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014that yogurt store; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014the yogurt place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Bob goes, \u201cOh, well maybe that is where it came from.\u201d When he called Monday morning, he was confirming, \u201cDo you have a parakeet that is now missing?\u2014because if you do, I have it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I told Barbara\u2014I said, \u201cAfter dinner, let\u2019s just drive the point home with Deborah.\u201d After dinner, I just stopped, and I looked at Deborah, and I said [emotion in voice], \u201cDeborah, God really loves you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And she was still not happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No; not happy at all. She wouldn\u2019t look at me. I said: \u201cDeborah, look at me. <em>God really loves you<\/em>.\u201d She still wouldn\u2019t look. I said: \u201cDeborah, God loves you. Bob, our neighbor, has your parakeet.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, at that point, two things happened. First of all, our daughter, Laura, had been sitting with her head\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, the very first time you said to Deborah: \u201cI want to tell you something. Can I tell you that God really loves you?\u201d Laura piped up and said, \u201cDo I have to listen to this?\u201d [Laughter] Because she <em>knew<\/em> that her dad was about to talk to her sister about something\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014some story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014some lesson, because she was not happy. [Laughter] She\u2019s thinking: \u201cThis isn\u2019t about me. Why do I have to be here?\u201d So she said, \u201cDo I have to listen to this?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis said, \u201cYou do have to listen to this,\u201d and Laura went, \u201cOoh!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, at the point I told Deborah that the parakeet was up the hill with Bob\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014Laura screamed and said, \u201cWhat?!\u201d And Deborah <em>slowly<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; like an ice cube.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014almost imperceptibly, at a point, began to smile. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>She was real skeptical\u2014she said, \u201cReally?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; we walked up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>All four of us marched up the hill to the neighbors\u2019\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014reclaimed the bird, put Sweet Pea back in her home, and all was well. But we just said, \u201cDeborah, God really loves you and is looking out for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, do you think Deborah every tied together the moral of the story?\u2014that you don\u2019t let the parakeet out of the cage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014to go play with the cat?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to go play with the cat?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I resisted\u2014[Laughter]\u2014giving the moral of the story!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m a little surprised! Are you a little surprised that he resisted? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Keith, our engineer, is surprised! I mean, it was so <em>obvious<\/em>; it was just so obvious.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it was <em>so<\/em> obvious that it was God\u2014because it was January; the parakeet had been outside for over 24 hours; it was really cold\u2014so that it actually survived the night, and then showed up at our neighbors\u2019 and banged on his window and not ours, where nobody was home\u2014I mean, so many things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, that Bob would run into that youth group guy\u2014I mean, Bob never went to church. He didn\u2019t know where we went to church. I mean, it was so obvious that God was <em>all over<\/em> this story that I think we <em>knew<\/em> that somehow this was going to sink in; somehow\u2014whether we said anything or not\u2014it was just too big for her to miss it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the moral of the story for parents is: \u201cGod has your back\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Is that it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; that is it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, you know, Deuteronomy 6 comes right after the giving of the Ten Commandments; and right after those commandments are given, God commands the parents of Israel\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014He says, \u201cYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and you shall teach your children to do the same.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParenting is God\u2019s idea; He loves our kids more than we do. As parents, so many times we feel so helpless; but God does care about our kids. Now, He may not do it in our timing; but He does have a way of getting our children\u2019s attention, because, really, children are God\u2019s statement that the next generation must take our place. What we must do is impart to our children the truth about God, the experience of God, and also the gospel of God\u2014how they can know Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s our assignment, Bob; and that\u2019s really why Barbara and I wrote the book, <em>The Art of Parenting<\/em>. We want to call a generation of parents\u2014and there are some 16 million millennial parents right now\u2014another one million have been added this past year\u2014who are raising their kids according to some kind of plan.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe question is: \u201cIs it the best-selling-book-in-history plan?\u2014is it the Bible?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we want to do\u2014and what we\u2019ve done in the book\u2014is break down the Scriptures and give folks some very simple, practical ways\u2014but biblically-anchored\u2014of how to raise the next generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I have found that parents, who are interested in parenting material\u2014whether it\u2019s a video series, or a book, or even what we\u2019re talking about on the radio\u2014if it\u2019s focused on parenting, they tend to be new parents who are aware that they\u2019re in over their head; because it doesn\u2019t take long, after you\u2019ve had a child, before you go, \u201cOh, I don\u2019t know everything I\u2019m supposed to be doing.\u201d By the time parents are raising teenagers, I think a lot of them think, \u201cWell, if we haven\u2019t gotten it by now, there\u2019s no hope for us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou wrote this book with new parents and parents of teens in mind\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014this is for everybody who\u2019s still in the midst of trying to raise their kids; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Exactly. If you still have children at home, even if it\u2019s one who is 17, there is something for you in this book; because it\u2019s never too late. That\u2019s one of the big messages that we want to send\u2014that: \u201cIt\u2019s never too late to impact your kids for Christ. It\u2019s never too late to make investments in their lives for things that will last forever.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe <em>feel<\/em> it more acutely, I think, with newborns, and toddlers, and preschoolers; because it\u2019s so new and fresh; and we\u2019re so acutely aware of what we\u2019re missing. We\u2019re much more worn down when our kids get to be teenagers, and it\u2019s easy to give up. But God doesn\u2019t want us to give up, because He\u2019s always available and wants to intersect our kids\u2019 lives at any stage so that we come to Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you know parents, in the midst of the teen years\u2014they get exhausted \/ they get discouraged\u2014they think, \u201cIf we haven\u2019t figured it out by now, it\u2019s helpless for us to figure it out.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That really is a lie. We know the feeling\u2014we\u2019ve experienced that feeling. In fact, yesterday, Barbara talked to one our children\u2014adult children\u2014who has a teenager or two, and our daughter was discouraged. Just going through the teenage years had just sapped her strength and her courage. What we want to do, Bob, is\u2014we want to give parents courage to hang in there \/ not quit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBasically, what we\u2019ve broken parenting down into are really four areas. Number one: relationships\u2014relationship with God and with one another. That\u2019s our assignment\u2014to train our kids to know how to relate to God properly and also how to get along with human beings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, character\u2014that\u2019s the Book of Proverbs\u2014being wise and not a fool; choosing right and not wrong. That\u2019s a big part of being parents today\u2014equipping children with boundaries.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe third area is identity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListen to me\u2014there is identity theft taking place today that is far more important than somebody stealing your credit card. There is a sexual identity theft, a spiritual identity theft, and also an emotional identity theft that we talk about in the book to help parents know how to raise kids, who reflect who God is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFinally, there\u2019s a child\u2019s purpose\u2014that\u2019s their mission. We believe a child was designed by God to be raised and then released\u2014released toward the bull\u2019s eye on the target that God has for them. If you\u2019re not sending your child to that destination on purpose, the world does have a plan for your child; and it\u2019s not a good plan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>These four areas you came to after spending months poring through the Scriptures to say, \u201cWhat does the Bible say about parenting?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Actually, <em>years<\/em>, Bob; because I spent the better part of one year studying the Scriptures, and Barbara and I would talk about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut over the next 25 years, we confirmed it. Over, and over, and over again, these four areas really were distilled down into the essence of what God\u2019s trying to do in our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne last story before we\u2019re done here. In writing the book, we had to decide how to start the book. We asked Deborah for permission to tell this story, and we were at the Creation Museum with 13 of our grandkids and 5 of our adult children and their spouses. We had a little time each evening where Papa\u2014where Papa would have a little lesson for the kids of what they\u2019d seen at the Ark or what they\u2019d seen at the Creation Museum.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI have a little story I\u2019d like to read.\u201d I pulled open the manuscript on my computer and I began to read this story. Deborah\u2019s two daughters were in the room\u2014they were all ears. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were listening, because\u2014one\u2019s about ten and the other\u2019s about six or seven\u2014and they\u2019re just nearing that time when they\u2019re going to want to go do whatever they want to go do, with whoever they want to it with, for as long as they want. Deborah was just grinning, because she\u2019s a great mom and is doing a great job at those kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and hearing you tell that story\u2014and then thinking about what Deborah shared as part of the<em> Art of Parenting<\/em>\u2122 video series\u2014some of her comments are priceless.
