Those are symptoms. You remember the advertising campaign that the people from Apple did years ago that all it said on the campaign was: \u201cThink different?\u201d Do you remember that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Vaguely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They had pictures of Albert Einstein and Bob Dylan and all of these iconoclastic people. I\u2019m thinking that would be a good slogan for where we are with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think you\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014sexuality today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wondered where you were going with that, but that\u2019s a good introduction because the book\u2019s title that we are talking about today is <em>Rethinking Sexuality<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, think differently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014<em>Thinking Differently about How God Made Us<\/em>. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> I\u2019m going to speak on whatever Bob tells me to. I have a feeling it will be about sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it may. So, what\u2019s she speaking on, then, Bob? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019ll be about sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She doesn\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you have given a good bit of your adult-life\u2014you\u2019ve been married to Mike since 1994. You have three sons, but you\u2019ve been involved in really doing some pioneering work in the area of human sexuality. Explain to our listeners how you got started because I think is a good place to start here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, I didn\u2019t sign up for this, and I tell God that often\u2014that this was not my desire to say, \u201cHey, I want to talk about sex every day and talk about these issues that are so difficult\u201d; but about six or seven years ago, the Lord just really took me through a very deep, spiritual journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThrough the course of a year, literally, like just laid this burden on my heart and just, basically, said: \u201cI\u2019ve got a new call for your life, and it\u2019s addressing the pain that, particularly, women are experiencing around sexuality.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it has been a faith-walk ever since then. When people ask me, \u201cHow did you get into this,\u201d it\u2019s not that I have some dramatic story from my past. It truly is just a burden that the Lord has put on my heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019m grateful that you stepped up in obedience to that. At the end of the broadcast, I think I\u2019m going to ask you\u2014because I wonder what you\u2019re answer would be to the question: \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d We\u2019ll come back to that at the end of the broadcast; but here at the beginning, I want to just kind of peek into your book, <em>Rethinking Sexuality<\/em>, and get right to the core of the matter. You say there is a difference between sex-ed and sexual discipleship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re calling the Christian community to, not merely have an education for our kids, but to begin the process of discipleship around our sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, not just for our kids either\u2014for all of us; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. It\u2019s really a call to the Christian church. This concept of sexual discipleship really started to rattle my thinking when I recognized it as I was working with churches and with women around sexual issues\u2014that women that knew the Word of God and had grown up in the church still thought like the world related to sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt dawned on me that we have been discipled in our sexuality by the culture. The church, at best, has told us what to think about certain sexual issues, but the culture has trained us how to think about sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, what is the essence of that discipleship? What have they told women about their sexuality? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Essentially, that sexuality is your own. It\u2019s a part of your identity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo be a mature adult, you need to explore your sexuality and experiment. You can find truth within yourself, and you should have the freedom to do anything you want sexuality. That\u2019s how you\u2019ll be fulfilled as a woman. That\u2019s a cultural narrative that we\u2019re trained with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019re paying attention to it, you see that cultural narrative reinforced in music and in TV and in movies and in just the way we talk in the news\u2014the way the issue is framed in our educational models in schools and universities. So, we\u2019re immersed in this thinking. Then, we start talking about biblical sexuality and God\u2019s prohibitions and His design. It doesn\u2019t even compute to us because we don\u2019t know how to think that way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Juli, I\u2019m part of a leadership team at a local church; and as we\u2019ve thought about this subject, here is what makes it tough. You\u2019re going to talk about this on Sunday morning? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you\u2019ve got teenagers in the room? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And parents are uncomfortable that you\u2019re talking about it with their teenagers in the room\u2014\u201cYou\u2019re just going to bring this up and say, \u2018We\u2019re going to have a candid conversation?\u2019\u201d There are going to be some parents who are going to go\u2014\u201cI\u2019m offended that you did that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And they are going to be offended. That\u2019s what Juli is saying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying, \u201cJust toughen up and do it?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019m saying that I truly believe that the problems we are seeing in our culture\u2014and I can name many of them that you\u2019re aware of: pornography, sexual abuse, LGBT issues\u2014all of them\u2014the problems are not the things we\u2019re identifying. Those are symptoms. The primary problem is that we do not have a biblical sense of why God created us as sexual people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUntil we reclaim that conversation, we are going to be playing whack-a-mole. You know, let\u2019s get a support group for the men struggling with sexual addiction. Let\u2019s help the married couple that is experiencing infidelity\u2014I mean you name the problems. We can\u2019t have a problem-solving approach. We have to reclaim this in our churches. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt begins with some of these very bold steps of: \u201cWe are going to have this conversation, and we\u2019re going to have it again and again and again so that we know how to think about our sexuality from a biblical framework.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m glad to hear you saying that, Juli, because Barbara and I have spent many months working on a new book called <em>The Art of Parenting<\/em>. Where we have drawn the battle lines is for parents to say, \u201cThis is yours to take the high ground. If you\u2019ll teach your kids God\u2019s view of how He made them male and female\u2014even though you won\u2019t know all the answers to their questions and you\u2019re going to be stumped and you\u2019re going to be puzzled and you\u2019re going to be embarrassed\u2014you\u2019ve got to push into this because the family really is\u201d\u2014isn\u2019t it?\u2014\u201cGod\u2019s training ground for where this needs to start originally.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Absolutely, and the key is you are teaching your kids about sexuality whether you realize it or not;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and you, most likely, are teaching them the wrong things by your silence and your awkwardness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember hearing one quote that really challenged me, and it was in relation to spiritual disciplines; but I think it applies to this. Some things are so important that they are worth doing poorly. [Laughter] It was like\u2014I get courage from that because it\u2019s like I don\u2019t always know what to say; but I know that God meets me when I step out, and I say, \u201cThis is so important that even if I\u2019m going to mess it up the first time I bring up the topic with my kids or in the church, it\u2019s worth doing poorly.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if parents are going to be proactive with their kids on this \/ if churches are going to say, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m going to take Juli\u2019s challenge and risk it and talk about this,\u201d what are the core things we need to be saying that are different than what the culture is saying? What would you map out as the message that needs to be shared today? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, absolutely. You know the first thing is recognizing that stories are always more\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014powerful than a list of things to remember. A large portion of our teaching on sexuality has been lists: \u201cThis is what God says, \u2018No,\u2019 to. This what God says, \u2018Yes,\u2019 to.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd people don\u2019t have a paradigm to hang those lists on which is why we hear young adults today saying, \u201cWhy would God care if I slept with somebody outside of marriage? I mean it\u2019s just\u2014what\u2019s the big deal?\u201d Or you\u2019ll hear people say, \u201cWhy would God care if two men get married; you know? Isn\u2019t it about love?\u201d They don\u2019t have a narrative that is powerful enough for them to make sense of biblical sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the very first place is recognizing that there is a narrative in the Scripture \/ story in Scripture that explains to us the why of why God cares about our sexuality. That\u2019s where we have to start. When we\u2019re parenting our kids, you can only get away with \u201cBecause I told you so\u201d so many times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> But I feel like we keep saying that in the church related to biblical sexuality\u2014\u201cBecause God said so\u201d\u2014without painting the picture for why sexuality is so sacred, why it\u2019s so near to God\u2019s heart, and how I can make sense of my sexuality in the bigger picture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Give us the first chapter of that story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> The story is that God intentionally created our sexuality to be a metaphor to help us understand His covenant love. So, when we breakdown the sexuality and we start to say, \u201cHey, it\u2019s sexual desire that makes us desire and draws us in a covenant; sexual intimacy is the celebration of that covenant promise; and sexual fidelity is the promise of the covenant\u2014the faithfulness of covenant.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe see\u2014you know I\u2019m painting with broad brushes; but if you read through Scripture, you see all of that throughout the Old Testament and New Testament that this is a powerful metaphor. So, that\u2019s the first part of this story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second part of the story is God has an enemy that will try to destroy what is most sacred. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we have an enemy that is very active in destroying that picture of covenant love for us in our sexuality. Every single one of us have experienced the enemy\u2019s destruction of that in our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the final piece of the story is that Jesus came to redeem all of our humanity including our sexuality. He cares deeply about restoring this picture so that we can understand at a deeper level God\u2019s love for us \/ His covenant love for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, the story is God designed you, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014there is an enemy that wants to distort that design.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> By the way, I\u2019ll never forget a statement made by Dan Allender at a conference that Barbara and I went to, to find out more about this subject. He said, \u201cThe hardest stone the devil of hell throws at a human being is sexual abuse.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> I agree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And we have a lot of people who are suffering under the distortion of what the enemy did. Then, third the Gospel\u2014the Gospel of Redemption. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s what I\u2019m hearing\u2014creation, fall, redemption. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Hope\u2014there\u2019s hope. I mean there is forgiveness for all the foul-ups. We\u2019re all broken. Welcome to the club. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, and that\u2019s so key\u2014is that when we start seeing our sexuality in light of the larger narrative\u2014of Jesus and His love and the Gospel\u2014it changes how we address all of the questions we are dealing with. It changes, for example, why a married couple would say, \u201cThis has to be an important part of our marriage. This can\u2019t just be like a\u2014\u2018Well, I guess, this is the best it gets.\u2019\u201d When you understand that you are participating in a sacred part of that metaphor, then, all of the sudden, it\u2019s worth fighting for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, I have to tell you. Around the country as we speak, we hear an increasing number of married couples that are moving toward low sex or no sex. What would you say about that\u2014because the enemy is distorting \/ he\u2019s robbing some of God\u2019s children at that point? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, you know, I think one thing I would say is we have got to recognize that as a form of sexual brokenness. I think so often we define sexual brokenness in these other categories of pornography, sexual abuse\u2014kind of the big picture. Those are forms of brokenness, but so is any distortion of God\u2019s design. God\u2019s design is that sexual intimacy within marriage\u2014Timothy Keller puts it in a beautiful way. It\u2019s like a covenant renewal ceremony. It\u2019s doing with our bodies what we are doing with whole lives\u2014giving myself completely to you. It\u2019s an act of service to one another in love and receiving love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we neglect it, we are actually playing into the enemy\u2019s hand of distorting that metaphor that God has created. I know that, kind of, grasping that bigger picture changed my view of sexuality within my marriage. It totally changed my motivation when I was like\u2014\u201cThis isn\u2019t just a marriage issue.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is actually a spiritual issue. I do not want Satan to have a foothold anywhere in my life \/ anywhere in my home \/ anywhere in my marriage. So, it\u2019s not okay if this just not good, or we\u2019re just not going to pursue this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> To that couple who may be struggling in that area or maybe because of past abuse or however else the enemy has distorted what\u2019s taking place there, what would you say for them to do? Practically speaking, how can they fight back against the enemy? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Well, first of all, I would say, \u201cYou have to have the resolve to fight.\u201d I kind of expressed that already. You have to understand that this is not a negotiable thing where it\u2019s just okay to settle with some brokenness; but recognize that it is worth fighting for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next thing I would do is I would invite God into the struggle. I\u2019ve met so few married couples that actually pray about their sex lives. They even feel weird hearing that, like\u2014\u201cReally?! You pray about your sex life?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAbsolutely! Invite God into that healing, pray regularly, but then also recognize that God has given us the body of Christ with different gifts that can help in that healing process. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, many couples that are struggling are going to benefit from books, podcasts, conferences that give a godly perspective on how to pursue healthy sexuality. Many couples are going to benefit from meeting with a Christian counselor that can guide them through how to communicate, how to begin to pursue healing from things like abuse or addictions or betrayals. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How would your book contribute to that process of healing? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, so, this book, <em>Rethinking Sexuality<\/em>, really gives you the paradigm. It challenges your paradigm and how you were addressing sexual issues and how God calls us to address them. So, again, it\u2019s that big picture view. When people read this content \/ when they read this book,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s like\u2014again, it\u2019s a paradigm shift: \u201cI\u2019ve never thought about sexuality from that perspective before.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s not a how-to manual, then? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s approaching it with the most important sexual organ in the body, which is the brain. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Absolutely; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You mentioned conferences and events. We spend an hour at our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaways talking about this. An hour goes by pretty quickly when you\u2019re talking about this; but I don\u2019t know how many couples I\u2019ve had come up to me and say, \u201cThank you for that,\u201d because they\u2019ve never been anywhere in any kind of a spiritual environment where this subject has been broached. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey have felt like\u2014\u201cIt\u2019s off-limits. We can\u2019t talk with one another about it. We can\u2019t talk with our friends about it. We\u2019re not going to talk with our pastor about it.\u201d So, this is a struggle area in their marriage. Nobody\u2019s talking about it, and they just wind up in defeat as a result of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. Yes, actually, we do whole conferences for married couples on sexuality;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and it\u2019s modeling for them and giving them the permission to talk about these issues because you\u2019re absolutely right, Bob, people have been married for decades that regularly have sex that don\u2019t know how to talk about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> So, they are not experiencing the true intimacy that God has designed for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, Bob, you\u2019re a pastor. How many messages do you suppose you\u2019ve given in all the years at your church around sexuality? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Not many. I\u2019m trying to think when we\u2019ve talked about it, we\u2019ve talked about it in a biblical understanding of how the culture differs from what the Bible teaches about sexuality. We\u2019ve had that conversation, but I don\u2019t know that we\u2019ve ever had any kind of a series where we\u2019ve said, \u201cHere\u2019s God\u2019s design for married couples and sex.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And there is a series in the Bible. Song of Solomon is a good series of messages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do that when the kids are at camp for a week, though, I\u2019m telling you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. I would even challenge you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014people think about having a series on God\u2019s design for sex in marriage, but how about just God\u2019s design for sexuality? We\u2019ve got to broaden the conversation of\u2014because in our culture, we\u2019re getting bombarded with messages about \u201cGender doesn\u2019t matter,\u201d \u201cSexual orientation doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d You know all of these things impact our thinking\u2014sexuality and singleness, pornography. So, we have to broaden our conversation and approach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> But, Juli, you know there are people who are uncomfortable that we\u2019re talking about this on the radio right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019ve gotten used to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But they\u2019re going\u2014\u201cThis is a private area. This is something that is so personal, so intimate. It cheapens it to have this kind of public conversation, and it\u2019s embarrassing. You shouldn\u2019t talk about this in public this way.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, I would challenge that person to ask the question: \u201cIs that tradition, or is that truly biblical?\u201d When we read the Scriptures, we see very\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014frank conversation and teaching on all forms of sexuality including God\u2019s design, sexual passion in marriage, sexual unfaithfulness. We see stories of rape, incest, homosexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019ve been brought up in a culture that says, \u201cChristian people don\u2019t talk about sex\u201d; but it\u2019s not a biblical tradition. Any tradition we are holding on to that isn\u2019t rooted in Scripture, we need to be willing to let go of. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think one of the reasons why people don\u2019t preach on it is I think we feel like we don\u2019t have a message personally. I think everybody is broken, everybody struggles in it; and for a pastor to stand up in front of his church with his wife on the second row from the front, and she\u2019s there with her arms folded\u2014I mean that\u2019s a challenging picture right there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI promised you I was going to move back to another subject at this point\u2014maybe, not though. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt may be the same thing. You\u2019ve done some courageous things in your life. You told us about one at the beginning. What\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in all your life? Courage is doing your duty in the face of fear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean here is somebody who is speaking to audiences of men and women, young people\u2014I\u2019m sure\u2014parents about sex; but what\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Boy, I don\u2019t know. That\u2019s a hard question. I will tell you. It\u2019s more difficult to talk to my own children about sexuality than to talk to anyone else. So, that\u2019s probably the things where I have to gather my courage the most\u2014particularly as a mom with three boys\u2014but I\u2019ve learned that courage\u2014I can\u2019t manufacture it in myself. It has to come from God. He gives me courage that I don\u2019t have, and I need it every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Here\u2019s a professional admitting it, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon\u2019t you love it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m wondering when the publisher sent you your copy of <em>Rethinking Sexuality<\/em> did your 15-year-old go\u2014\u201cI want to read that?\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> My 15-year-old says, \u201cMom, another book on sex; really? Those are symptoms. The primary problem is that we do not have a biblical sense of why God created us as sexual people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, August 23<sup>rd<\/sup>. You remember the advertising campaign that the people from Apple did years ago that all it said on the campaign was: \u201cThink different?\u201d Do you remember that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Vaguely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They had pictures of Albert Einstein and Bob Dylan and all of these iconoclastic people. I\u2019m thinking that would be a good slogan for where we are with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think you\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014sexuality today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wondered where you were going with that, but that\u2019s a good introduction because the book\u2019s title that we are talking about today is <em>Rethinking Sexuality<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, think differently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014<em>Thinking Differently about How God Made Us<\/em>. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> I\u2019m going to speak on whatever Bob tells me to. I have a feeling it will be about sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it may. So, what\u2019s she speaking on, then, Bob? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019ll be about sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She doesn\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you have given a good bit of your adult-life\u2014you\u2019ve been married to Mike since 1994. You have three sons, but you\u2019ve been involved in really doing some pioneering work in the area of human sexuality. Explain to our listeners how you got started because I think is a good place to start here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, I didn\u2019t sign up for this, and I tell God that often\u2014that this was not my desire to say, \u201cHey, I want to talk about sex every day and talk about these issues that are so difficult\u201d; but about six or seven years ago, the Lord just really took me through a very deep, spiritual journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThrough the course of a year, literally, like just laid this burden on my heart and just, basically, said: \u201cI\u2019ve got a new call for your life, and it\u2019s addressing the pain that, particularly, women are experiencing around sexuality.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it has been a faith-walk ever since then. When people ask me, \u201cHow did you get into this,\u201d it\u2019s not that I have some dramatic story from my past. It truly is just a burden that the Lord has put on my heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019m grateful that you stepped up in obedience to that. At the end of the broadcast, I think I\u2019m going to ask you\u2014because I wonder what you\u2019re answer would be to the question: \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d We\u2019ll come back to that at the end of the broadcast; but here at the beginning, I want to just kind of peek into your book, <em>Rethinking Sexuality<\/em>, and get right to the core of the matter. You say there is a difference between sex-ed and sexual discipleship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re calling the Christian community to, not merely have an education for our kids, but to begin the process of discipleship around our sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, not just for our kids either\u2014for all of us; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. It\u2019s really a call to the Christian church. This concept of sexual discipleship really started to rattle my thinking when I recognized it as I was working with churches and with women around sexual issues\u2014that women that knew the Word of God and had grown up in the church still thought like the world related to sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt dawned on me that we have been discipled in our sexuality by the culture. The church, at best, has told us what to think about certain sexual issues, but the culture has trained us how to think about sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, what is the essence of that discipleship? What have they told women about their sexuality? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Essentially, that sexuality is your own. It\u2019s a part of your identity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo be a mature adult, you need to explore your sexuality and experiment. You can find truth within yourself, and you should have the freedom to do anything you want sexuality. That\u2019s how you\u2019ll be fulfilled as a woman. That\u2019s a cultural narrative that we\u2019re trained with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019re paying attention to it, you see that cultural narrative reinforced in music and in TV and in movies and in just the way we talk in the news\u2014the way the issue is framed in our educational models in schools and universities. So, we\u2019re immersed in this thinking. Then, we start talking about biblical sexuality and God\u2019s prohibitions and His design. It doesn\u2019t even compute to us because we don\u2019t know how to think that way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Juli, I\u2019m part of a leadership team at a local church; and as we\u2019ve thought about this subject, here is what makes it tough. You\u2019re going to talk about this on Sunday morning? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you\u2019ve got teenagers in the room? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And parents are uncomfortable that you\u2019re talking about it with their teenagers in the room\u2014\u201cYou\u2019re just going to bring this up and say, \u2018We\u2019re going to have a candid conversation?\u2019\u201d There are going to be some parents who are going to go\u2014\u201cI\u2019m offended that you did that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And they are going to be offended. That\u2019s what Juli is saying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying, \u201cJust toughen up and do it?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019m saying that I truly believe that the problems we are seeing in our culture\u2014and I can name many of them that you\u2019re aware of: pornography, sexual abuse, LGBT issues\u2014all of them\u2014the problems are not the things we\u2019re identifying. Those are symptoms. The primary problem is that we do not have a biblical sense of why God created us as sexual people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUntil we reclaim that conversation, we are going to be playing whack-a-mole. You know, let\u2019s get a support group for the men struggling with sexual addiction. Let\u2019s help the married couple that is experiencing infidelity\u2014I mean you name the problems. We can\u2019t have a problem-solving approach. We have to reclaim this in our churches. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt begins with some of these very bold steps of: \u201cWe are going to have this conversation, and we\u2019re going to have it again and again and again so that we know how to think about our sexuality from a biblical framework.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m glad to hear you saying that, Juli, because Barbara and I have spent many months working on a new book called <em>The Art of Parenting<\/em>. Where we have drawn the battle lines is for parents to say, \u201cThis is yours to take the high ground. If you\u2019ll teach your kids God\u2019s view of how He made them male and female\u2014even though you won\u2019t know all the answers to their questions and you\u2019re going to be stumped and you\u2019re going to be puzzled and you\u2019re going to be embarrassed\u2014you\u2019ve got to push into this because the family really is\u201d\u2014isn\u2019t it?\u2014\u201cGod\u2019s training ground for where this needs to start originally.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Absolutely, and the key is you are teaching your kids about sexuality whether you realize it or not;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and you, most likely, are teaching them the wrong things by your silence and your awkwardness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember hearing one quote that really challenged me, and it was in relation to spiritual disciplines; but I think it applies to this. Some things are so important that they are worth doing poorly. [Laughter] It was like\u2014I get courage from that because it\u2019s like I don\u2019t always know what to say; but I know that God meets me when I step out, and I say, \u201cThis is so important that even if I\u2019m going to mess it up the first time I bring up the topic with my kids or in the church, it\u2019s worth doing poorly.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if parents are going to be proactive with their kids on this \/ if churches are going to say, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m going to take Juli\u2019s challenge and risk it and talk about this,\u201d what are the core things we need to be saying that are different than what the culture is saying? What would you map out as the message that needs to be shared today? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, absolutely. You know the first thing is recognizing that stories are always more\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014powerful than a list of things to remember. A large portion of our teaching on sexuality has been lists: \u201cThis is what God says, \u2018No,\u2019 to. This what God says, \u2018Yes,\u2019 to.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd people don\u2019t have a paradigm to hang those lists on which is why we hear young adults today saying, \u201cWhy would God care if I slept with somebody outside of marriage? I mean it\u2019s just\u2014what\u2019s the big deal?\u201d Or you\u2019ll hear people say, \u201cWhy would God care if two men get married; you know? Isn\u2019t it about love?\u201d They don\u2019t have a narrative that is powerful enough for them to make sense of biblical sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the very first place is recognizing that there is a narrative in the Scripture \/ story in Scripture that explains to us the why of why God cares about our sexuality. That\u2019s where we have to start. When we\u2019re parenting our kids, you can only get away with \u201cBecause I told you so\u201d so many times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> But I feel like we keep saying that in the church related to biblical sexuality\u2014\u201cBecause God said so\u201d\u2014without painting the picture for why sexuality is so sacred, why it\u2019s so near to God\u2019s heart, and how I can make sense of my sexuality in the bigger picture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Give us the first chapter of that story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> The story is that God intentionally created our sexuality to be a metaphor to help us understand His covenant love. So, when we breakdown the sexuality and we start to say, \u201cHey, it\u2019s sexual desire that makes us desire and draws us in a covenant; sexual intimacy is the celebration of that covenant promise; and sexual fidelity is the promise of the covenant\u2014the faithfulness of covenant.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe see\u2014you know I\u2019m painting with broad brushes; but if you read through Scripture, you see all of that throughout the Old Testament and New Testament that this is a powerful metaphor. So, that\u2019s the first part of this story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second part of the story is God has an enemy that will try to destroy what is most sacred. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we have an enemy that is very active in destroying that picture of covenant love for us in our sexuality. Every single one of us have experienced the enemy\u2019s destruction of that in our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the final piece of the story is that Jesus came to redeem all of our humanity including our sexuality. He cares deeply about restoring this picture so that we can understand at a deeper level God\u2019s love for us \/ His covenant love for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, the story is God designed you, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014there is an enemy that wants to distort that design.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> By the way, I\u2019ll never forget a statement made by Dan Allender at a conference that Barbara and I went to, to find out more about this subject. He said, \u201cThe hardest stone the devil of hell throws at a human being is sexual abuse.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> I agree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And we have a lot of people who are suffering under the distortion of what the enemy did. Then, third the Gospel\u2014the Gospel of Redemption. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s what I\u2019m hearing\u2014creation, fall, redemption. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Hope\u2014there\u2019s hope. I mean there is forgiveness for all the foul-ups. We\u2019re all broken. Welcome to the club. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, and that\u2019s so key\u2014is that when we start seeing our sexuality in light of the larger narrative\u2014of Jesus and His love and the Gospel\u2014it changes how we address all of the questions we are dealing with. It changes, for example, why a married couple would say, \u201cThis has to be an important part of our marriage. This can\u2019t just be like a\u2014\u2018Well, I guess, this is the best it gets.\u2019\u201d When you understand that you are participating in a sacred part of that metaphor, then, all of the sudden, it\u2019s worth fighting for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, I have to tell you. Around the country as we speak, we hear an increasing number of married couples that are moving toward low sex or no sex. What would you say about that\u2014because the enemy is distorting \/ he\u2019s robbing some of God\u2019s children at that point? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, you know, I think one thing I would say is we have got to recognize that as a form of sexual brokenness. I think so often we define sexual brokenness in these other categories of pornography, sexual abuse\u2014kind of the big picture. Those are forms of brokenness, but so is any distortion of God\u2019s design. God\u2019s design is that sexual intimacy within marriage\u2014Timothy Keller puts it in a beautiful way. It\u2019s like a covenant renewal ceremony. It\u2019s doing with our bodies what we are doing with whole lives\u2014giving myself completely to you. It\u2019s an act of service to one another in love and receiving love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we neglect it, we are actually playing into the enemy\u2019s hand of distorting that metaphor that God has created. I know that, kind of, grasping that bigger picture changed my view of sexuality within my marriage. It totally changed my motivation when I was like\u2014\u201cThis isn\u2019t just a marriage issue.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is actually a spiritual issue. I do not want Satan to have a foothold anywhere in my life \/ anywhere in my home \/ anywhere in my marriage. So, it\u2019s not okay if this just not good, or we\u2019re just not going to pursue this.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> To that couple who may be struggling in that area or maybe because of past abuse or however else the enemy has distorted what\u2019s taking place there, what would you say for them to do? Practically speaking, how can they fight back against the enemy? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Well, first of all, I would say, \u201cYou have to have the resolve to fight.\u201d I kind of expressed that already. You have to understand that this is not a negotiable thing where it\u2019s just okay to settle with some brokenness; but recognize that it is worth fighting for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next thing I would do is I would invite God into the struggle. I\u2019ve met so few married couples that actually pray about their sex lives. They even feel weird hearing that, like\u2014\u201cReally?! You pray about your sex life?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAbsolutely! Invite God into that healing, pray regularly, but then also recognize that God has given us the body of Christ with different gifts that can help in that healing process. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, many couples that are struggling are going to benefit from books, podcasts, conferences that give a godly perspective on how to pursue healthy sexuality. Many couples are going to benefit from meeting with a Christian counselor that can guide them through how to communicate, how to begin to pursue healing from things like abuse or addictions or betrayals. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How would your book contribute to that process of healing? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, so, this book, <em>Rethinking Sexuality<\/em>, really gives you the paradigm. It challenges your paradigm and how you were addressing sexual issues and how God calls us to address them. So, again, it\u2019s that big picture view. When people read this content \/ when they read this book,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s like\u2014again, it\u2019s a paradigm shift: \u201cI\u2019ve never thought about sexuality from that perspective before.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s not a how-to manual, then? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s approaching it with the most important sexual organ in the body, which is the brain. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Absolutely; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You mentioned conferences and events. We spend an hour at our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaways talking about this. An hour goes by pretty quickly when you\u2019re talking about this; but I don\u2019t know how many couples I\u2019ve had come up to me and say, \u201cThank you for that,\u201d because they\u2019ve never been anywhere in any kind of a spiritual environment where this subject has been broached. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey have felt like\u2014\u201cIt\u2019s off-limits. We can\u2019t talk with one another about it. We can\u2019t talk with our friends about it. We\u2019re not going to talk with our pastor about it.\u201d So, this is a struggle area in their marriage. Nobody\u2019s talking about it, and they just wind up in defeat as a result of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. Yes, actually, we do whole conferences for married couples on sexuality;\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and it\u2019s modeling for them and giving them the permission to talk about these issues because you\u2019re absolutely right, Bob, people have been married for decades that regularly have sex that don\u2019t know how to talk about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> So, they are not experiencing the true intimacy that God has designed for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, Bob, you\u2019re a pastor. How many messages do you suppose you\u2019ve given in all the years at your church around sexuality? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Not many. I\u2019m trying to think when we\u2019ve talked about it, we\u2019ve talked about it in a biblical understanding of how the culture differs from what the Bible teaches about sexuality. We\u2019ve had that conversation, but I don\u2019t know that we\u2019ve ever had any kind of a series where we\u2019ve said, \u201cHere\u2019s God\u2019s design for married couples and sex.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And there is a series in the Bible. Song of Solomon is a good series of messages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do that when the kids are at camp for a week, though, I\u2019m telling you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. I would even challenge you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014people think about having a series on God\u2019s design for sex in marriage, but how about just God\u2019s design for sexuality? We\u2019ve got to broaden the conversation of\u2014because in our culture, we\u2019re getting bombarded with messages about \u201cGender doesn\u2019t matter,\u201d \u201cSexual orientation doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d You know all of these things impact our thinking\u2014sexuality and singleness, pornography. So, we have to broaden our conversation and approach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> But, Juli, you know there are people who are uncomfortable that we\u2019re talking about this on the radio right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019ve gotten used to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But they\u2019re going\u2014\u201cThis is a private area. This is something that is so personal, so intimate. It cheapens it to have this kind of public conversation, and it\u2019s embarrassing. You shouldn\u2019t talk about this in public this way.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes, I would challenge that person to ask the question: \u201cIs that tradition, or is that truly biblical?\u201d When we read the Scriptures, we see very\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014frank conversation and teaching on all forms of sexuality including God\u2019s design, sexual passion in marriage, sexual unfaithfulness. We see stories of rape, incest, homosexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019ve been brought up in a culture that says, \u201cChristian people don\u2019t talk about sex\u201d; but it\u2019s not a biblical tradition. Any tradition we are holding on to that isn\u2019t rooted in Scripture, we need to be willing to let go of. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think one of the reasons why people don\u2019t preach on it is I think we feel like we don\u2019t have a message personally. I think everybody is broken, everybody struggles in it; and for a pastor to stand up in front of his church with his wife on the second row from the front, and she\u2019s there with her arms folded\u2014I mean that\u2019s a challenging picture right there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI promised you I was going to move back to another subject at this point\u2014maybe, not though. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt may be the same thing. You\u2019ve done some courageous things in your life. You told us about one at the beginning. What\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in all your life? Courage is doing your duty in the face of fear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean here is somebody who is speaking to audiences of men and women, young people\u2014I\u2019m sure\u2014parents about sex; but what\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> Boy, I don\u2019t know. That\u2019s a hard question. I will tell you. It\u2019s more difficult to talk to my own children about sexuality than to talk to anyone else. So, that\u2019s probably the things where I have to gather my courage the most\u2014particularly as a mom with three boys\u2014but I\u2019ve learned that courage\u2014I can\u2019t manufacture it in myself. It has to come from God. He gives me courage that I don\u2019t have, and I need it every day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Here\u2019s a professional admitting it, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDon\u2019t you love it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m wondering when the publisher sent you your copy of <em>Rethinking Sexuality<\/em> did your 15-year-old go\u2014\u201cI want to read that?\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> My 15-year-old says, \u201cMom, another book on sex; really?
