Hanna Seymour says there are a lot of reasons why.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I have seen so many students \/ so many friends <em>really<\/em> struggle with their faith, because for most of them it\u2019s the first time that they are introduced to a community of people that they love\u2014professors\/all these folks\u2014who, not only disagree, but like <em>strongly<\/em> disagree. A lot of students can\u2019t handle that, and it throws them a curve ball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, July 25<sup>th<\/sup>. Your children are going to face a lot of challenges as they head to college\u2014among them whether they\u2019re going to maintain a faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ll talk about that and more with Hanna Seymour today. Aren\u2019t you about to have a grandchild go off to college pretty quickly?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Eighteen-year-old\u2014I think he\u2019s getting ready to go to Biola.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So it\u2019s a guy headed off to college\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014not a girl.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Very smart\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014a leader.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Are you concerned about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019ll take over Biola. [Laughter] I mean, that\u2019s just all there is to it. There\u2019s more than one way to take over the world\u2014we\u2019re going to do it through our grandkids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Through your grandkids. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got a great guest with us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. She\u2019s been with us here all this week. Hanna, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Always good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m just surprised you came back\u2014the way Bob and I\u2019ve insulted you. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh! We\u2019ve been <em>kind<\/em> to her all\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> You\u2019ve been very kind\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> \u2014and I was prepped by my father; so\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, her father and mother are Michael and Cindy Easley and former president of Moody Bible Institute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your dad is a part of our <em>Art of Parenting<\/em>\u2122 video series, so our listeners may know him from that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Hanna\u2019s written a book called <em>The College Girl\u2019s Survival Guide<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBefore we get to that, I just thought this would be a fun question to ask\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014the daughter of Michael and Cindy Easley.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s my favorite question\u2014do you know what it is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t listen to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Wait\u2014I know what it is if it\u2019s your favorite.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; what is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026when you exhibited courage?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cWhat is the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in all your life?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> See; she does know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I know\u2014I know you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s because she knows my daughter, not because she listens to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> You know, the sad thing is\u2014I kind of thought, \u201cI should probably prepare my answer for that,\u201d and I still didn\u2019t. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So you\u2019re, now, thinking it through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Courage is doing your duty in the face of fear. When have you faced down fear and done your duty, as a young lady?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Two circumstances come to mind, and I\u2019ll share the first one. Maybe, if we have time, I\u2019ll share the second one; but the first one was\u2014I was working at a private secular institution. My job at that school was a lot of crisis-behavioral response; so I would respond if a student exhibited any thoughts of suicide, or if they had been sexually assaulted\u2014any of these high-risk issues I would respond and assess the student. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpecifically, with suicide ideation, I would have to show up on scene and talk to them long enough to decide if they needed to be hospitalized or if they were safe enough to be left in their dorm room. Part of that job\u2014of course, it was a secular university, so I\u2019m not allowed to talk about Jesus \/ I\u2019m not allowed to share the gospel\u2014that would be a fire-able offense. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember it was my <em>very<\/em> first solo crisis. I show up. A roommate lets me in and splits. I\u2019m looking at this young woman, sitting in the corner of her dorm room. Her head is buried into her body. She\u2019s essentially in the fetal position, rocking back and forth. I spent, I bet, an hour trying to get her to even just come out of her shell. Truly, for her to lift up her face and just make eye contact with me, I spent an hour. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, this whole time, I\u2019m walking into that room, praying. I\u2019m praying as I\u2019m talking to her. Over, and over, and over I just kept feeling so compelled: \u201cThe only answer for this young woman is Jesus right now. That\u2019s it. There\u2019s nothing you can say to her that\u2019s going to get her to make eye contact with you, unless we go into the spiritual realm.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hate to say it, but I was terrified. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was terrified that\u2014it was my first time to do it by myself. If it was going to get back to my boss, I would be fired. After enough prodding, truly by the Holy Spirit, I knew: \u201cYou know what? This is a risk worth taking. It doesn\u2019t matter if I\u2019m fired. This young lady is truly on the verge of killing herself; and since the only answer for her is knowing that there is a God who loves her, and who created her, and who has a unique plan for her life, and that\u2019s she\u2019s worthy and valuable,\u201d\u2014and all these things that can only be known from the truth of the gospel\u2014I knew I had to share that with her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did\u2014just slowly started\u2014said her name and said, \u201cOkay; I have to tell you something that I\u2019m probably not allowed to tell you,\u201d and slowly shared some biblical truth and walked her through the gospel. Did she place her faith in Christ that day?\u2014no; I actually don\u2019t know what happened to her. I know that we connected, and we talked and sat there for about an hour. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I walked her to be hospitalized, because she wasn\u2019t safe. But that\u2014I think that is one of my more courageous moments.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019ve had a lot of experience with college students \/ high school-graduating girls in preparing them for the college experience. You wrote your book; in fact, in response to questions that some of these incoming freshmen girls had written you, asking about situations they were facing. You\u2019ve written your book down as 52 questions or issues that you\u2019re addressing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the big issues is sex, alcohol, and parties.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What is going to be the reality of what your daughter will face on the university campus?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; so it is everywhere, whether it\u2019s sex\u2014a hook-up culture is rampant\u2014lots of drinking \/ lots of drugs\u2014and it\u2019s not just weed. There\u2019s\u2014I mean, one of the universities I worked at\u2014there was heroin everywhere, so it\u2019s out there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParents\u2014one: just to be communicating with their students, saying: \u201cHey, I know that this stuff is out there, and I know you\u2019re going to see it. Let\u2019s talk about what you\u2019re going to do.\u201d I remember walking into one of my first really big college parties and seeing cocaine for the first time. Right then, your student has a decision to make: \u201cI can stay here and fend for myself, and we\u2019ll see how that goes,\u201d or \u201cI can choose to turn around and walk out.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven talking through those scenarios, I <em>knew<\/em>\u2014I had processed that \/ already thought through: \u201cWhat am I going to do when I see cocaine? I\u2019m going to walk out,\u201d and that\u2019s what I did. Maybe, I would have been fine had I stayed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI worked really hard in college\u2014I talk about this in my book: \u201cIf you are <em>strong<\/em> in your principles, and strong in your faith, and you\u2019re rooted in a <em>strong<\/em> Christian community that stick around you and keep you accountable, I think you can exist in that party culture without losing your mind. You take your own\u2014I talk about I took a six-pack of Fresca<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and I drank. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tToday, I would take La Croix<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>; but you take your own non-alcoholic beverages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was part of an A Cappella group. I wanted to be part of that community and be there for my friends without engaging in risky behavior. I think it\u2019s possible, but you\u2019ve got to be real certain that you can continue to be a light in the darkness and not let the darkness snuff you out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So when that group says: \u201cOkay; we\u2019re done. We\u2019re going <em>partying<\/em>!\u201d did Hanna go?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and drank Fresca?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And they were like\u2014was anybody trying to save you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Oh sure. I mean, I tease in my book\u2014there\u2019s a thing called a koozie. If you\u2019re from the south, you know what a koozie is. If you\u2019re not, it\u2019s a thing that wraps around your can or bottle and insulates it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and can protect the identity of the beverage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes! I used that, not because I was afraid of\u2014it\u2019s not that I wanted people to think I was drinking\u2014just took some of the peer pressure down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tObviously, if they looked closely, they knew it was a Fresca. It wasn\u2019t a Budweiser<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> or whatever everyone else was drinking around me, but it took some of the pressure off. For the most part, if you\u2019re going around\u2014and you\u2019re with good friends that know what you stand for\u2014they usually kind of let go, after a while, and: \u201cOh, that\u2019s just Hanna. You know, she\u2026\u201d They know you\u2019re going to be the one taking care of them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow many girls did I walk home and make sure that they were safe?\u2014did I care for when they got sick? I mean\u2014and that\u2019s another thing you\u2019ve got to decide: \u201cDo you want to be the mom?\u201d Maybe you don\u2019t; and so maybe you don\u2019t even engage in that area of the social world, but I wanted to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you ever have a night, where you said: \u201cYou know what? Forget all of this. I\u2019m just going to party like everybody else parties\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> So, once I was 21, I would drink occasionally\u2014I talk about this in my book. I had a rule\u2014I would set my number: \u201cOkay; you can have <em>a<\/em> beer\u2014one beer at this party.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As long as you don\u2019t set your number at eight.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Right, right, right. I set my number, but I talk about it in the book, too; there were nights I didn\u2019t set a number. Did I ever make some crazy, horrible, life-altering mistake or consequence? No; I\u2019m grateful\u2014I think, by God\u2019s grace, He protected me and took care of me. I truly never made any kind of dumb decision based on drinking too much, but I still always regretted it the next morning: (A) I woke up feeling bad\/just sick and (B) I knew I wasn\u2019t pleasing to the Lord. I really did care about that, as a college student\u2014I wanted to honor God \/ I wanted to please Him. But, yes, sometimes the whims of your friends, and not having a plan and sticking to it, gets the best of you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Curiosity, where somebody says, \u201cJust try a hit off of this,\u201d\u2014was that tempting to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Drugs\u2014it was not. I don\u2019t know if that is part of my upbringing. My dad\u2019s story\u2014he would say he tried every drug except needles; he did everything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that was a huge part of his story. He came to Christ during the middle of a bad trip\u2014he was suicidal, on drugs. I mean, nothing but the Holy Spirit came over him to say, \u201cYou need to not kill yourself, and you need to turn your life around.\u201d When he came out from that drug experience\u2014that was it for him. He decided to run after the Lord with everything he had. I think <em>knowing<\/em> that part of my dad\u2019s story\u2014drugs weren\u2019t appealing to me. I had heard how it unfolded in his life and that seemed good enough to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You worked with a lot of college students and, undoubtedly, encountered sexual assault. How prevalent is it on the college campus? I\u2019ve got a couple of follow-up questions after you answer that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> It is <em>very<\/em> prevalent. One in four women in college will experience sexual assault. That\u2019s not one in four will have in their lifetime, by the time they get to college\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that is, during their time in college, one in four will experience sexual assault. One out of every four sexual assaults actually happens to a male student, so it\u2019s also common for guys to be experiencing sexual assault in college. Most of the time, it\u2019s wrapped in the party scene; because you\u2019re drinking too much \/ they\u2019re drinking too much\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alcohol is involved; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>\u2014there\u2019s drugs, whatever; and <em>you<\/em> are unable to fend for yourself. You\u2019re unable to say, \u201cNo.\u201d You\u2019re unable just to walk away from a bad situation. I have counseled and hugged so many college women, and some men\u2014whether it was the morning after, a week after, two years later\u2014it\u2019s <em>very<\/em> prevalent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s talk about after it happens. Two questions around this: \u201cWhat would you say to a young lady who had experienced this in her life?\u201d and then: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat would you say to your daughter, if she\u2019s going away to college and she encounters a roommate, who\u2019s been sexually assaulted, what should she do?\u201d Answer both of those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; so what I say\u2014and what I tell folks to say when they\u2019re responding to a sexual assault survivor is always, number one: \u201cI\u2019m so sorry that this happened to you! I\u2019m <em>so<\/em> sorry.\u201d Number two\u2014asking the question: \u201cAre you okay?\u201d I know that might sound stupid\u2014like, \u201cOf course, I\u2019m not okay!\u201d But it\u2019s a non-judgmental\u2014just: \u201cHey, I\u2019m here to listen\u2014whatever you want to say \/ however you want to respond to that question: \u2018Are you okay?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Offer grace and compassion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes! Yes! Three: \u201cIt\u2019s not your fault. It is <em>not<\/em> your fault, no matter what happened. No matter what choices, decisions, mistakes you may or may not have made along the way, it\u2019s not your fault.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then four, \u201cI\u2019m here to help you however I can.\u201d Some women are ready to get help the next day\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they want to go get a medical examination; they want to go to counseling center; they want to report it. Some women <em>never<\/em> want to do any of those things; some women want to report it after two years, whatever. Knowing it is a <em>process<\/em>\u2014it is a marathon, not a sprint, of healing and recovering from sexual assault.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And so equipping your daughter to be\u2014not a professional counselor\u2014but she will, undoubtedly, if one in four are being assaulted, that means\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> \u2014she\u2019ll hear about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; if she\u2019s a part of a group of four women.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; and to know most college campuses have a counseling center. Most of them are <em>free<\/em> to students; if not, it is a <em>very good deal<\/em>\u2014but for students to know that\u2019s on your campus \/ that\u2019s a resource for you. If you have <em>no idea<\/em> where to turn; or if you\u2019ve got a roommate, who was sexually assaulted; or who mentioned she\u2019s thinking about hurting herself\u2014any of those things\u2014know the easiest place to go is always that college counseling center.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hanna, it sounds like your moral principles stayed intact throughout your four years of college. Did your faith stay grounded throughout those four years, as well, or did it waver?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>It did. I had two of my bigger seasons of doubt and just confusion in the faith in middle school and high school. Truly, by the time I went off to college, I had decided I was all in. I believed that Jesus was who He says He is and that the Bible is true, and that I was going to go in 100 percent and try to live a life that was worthy of that calling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have seen <em>so many<\/em> students \/ so many friends <em>really<\/em> struggle with their faith, because for most of them it\u2019s the first time that they are introduced to a community of people that they love\u2014professors\/all these folks\u2014who, not only disagree, but like <em>strongly<\/em> disagree. I was the token conservative Christian in the classroom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, I let that be known\u2014I was sharing, in class, things I believed; but I would be called upon. I was a sociology and psychology double major\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow; wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>\u2014so from a very liberal discipline. They would call me and go: \u201cWell, Hanna, what do you think about that?\u201d or \u201cWhat would <em>your<\/em> parents have said about that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026people like you think about this?\u201d\u2014right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Right; but a lot of students can\u2019t handle that, and it throws them a curve ball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and they wilt under pressure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and they withdraw from their Christian faith, thinking they should be ashamed of it; when, in reality, the Christian faith can stand up in any college classroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Absolutely, but the adversary is louder and seems more intelligent than the knowledge they\u2019re able to defend themselves with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I heard a pastor say one time\u2014I thought this was kind of\u2014I thought it was shrewd. I just wondered how accurate it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cWhen I\u2019m talking to a college student, who says to me, \u2018I\u2019m starting to have questions and doubts about God,\u2019\u201d\u2014he would say\u2014\u201cWhen did you start sleeping with your girlfriend?\u201d [Laughter] It\u2019s one of those interesting observations. There is this tension: \u201cIf I really believe this and hold on to this, it\u2019s going to be limiting.\u201d It was limiting for you; it kept your guidelines in place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But if I\u2019m drawn toward college life\u2014and what looks like fun on the other side\u2014that\u2019s in conflict with what I was taught, growing up. Now, I need some cover; so I have doubts, which gives me cover to be able to head off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So how much of the faith doubting\u2014that students are doing\u2014do you think is because they want to party?\u2014and how much of it is because, in the classroom, they heard a science professor say, \u201cThere is no way that all this happened this way\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s funny, because I think that pastor is spot-on; but I\u2019ve never thought about it in that way. In my book, I answer the question: \u201cDo I really want to save sex for marriage?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI talk about how, when a girl approaches me with that question, I take five steps back and go: \u201cOkay; let\u2019s talk about: \u2018Do you believe that God\u2019s story is the best way to live? Do you think that it\u2019s better to serve God and what He wants or to serve yourself and what you want?\u2019\u201d\u2014so <em>similar<\/em>\u2014but a little bit different angle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes; you\u2019re right. A lot of it probably has to do with: \u201cLife seems less fun, as a Christian, in college.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I really believe that the bottom-line is: \u201cWe have to trust that God\u2019s way is for our good and to trust in that,\u201d\u2014and it is\u2014we know that, sitting at this table. The fact that I didn\u2019t have sex before marriage has been just a giant blessing on my life; but sure, it could have felt like I missed out on a whole lot of fun while I was in college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And anybody who says that: \u201cMuch of what happens at college isn\u2019t fun,\u201d and also \u201c\u2026isn\u2019t wrong,\u201d\u2014they\u2019re lying to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, there is pleasure in sin for a season.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> That\u2019s right\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There really is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s the problem\u2014it grows up into a bitter harvest, and that\u2019s what we don\u2019t calculate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sitting here, thinking about the Book of Proverbs. I asked my daughter, Laura, what she remembered most about Barbara and me as we parented her and prepared her as she went away to college; to work; and ultimately, to marriage. One of the things she mentioned was a Proverbs Bible study that she and I did once a week\u2014we didn\u2019t do it every week\u2014but on a Thursday morning, I\u2019d take her to a local restaurant that was cheap\u2014[Laughter]\u2014because I had to take all of them, ultimately. It was a pretty costly discipleship experience\u2014now that I think about it. [Laughter] But it had donuts, and it had good food\u2014eggs and bacon and all that\u2014but she mentioned that as being, really, an important anchoring time for her as she went away to college. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think your book does a great job of preparing a young person to protect their faith; secondly, to protect their morals; and third, to know how to handle the temptations that are going to come their way. Your book spells out the issues girls are going to face on the college and university campus. A parent would do well to take a senior year\u2014there\u2019s 52 in here; you could take one a week\u2014now, you won\u2019t want to do that; but you could take a couple of these questions a week, over a 36-week period. You could go through Hanna\u2019s book and talk about these issues, because they are the real stuff of what\u2019s happening out there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHanna, you did a great job. Now, you\u2019ve got to twist Tyler \/ your husband\u2019s arm and tell him to write\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the boys\u2019 book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014<em>The College Boys<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the guys\u2019 guide.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> \u2014<em>The Guys\u2019 Survival Guide<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; <em>The Guys\u2019 Survival Guide<\/em>\u2014hope you\u2019ll both come back next time and join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Thanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We can be honest; can\u2019t we? I just wanted our listeners to understand it\u2019s the caf\u00e9 at Kroger that he took her to, and it was affordable. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was the only one near the school. Let\u2019s just say we didn\u2019t have the McDonald\u2019s, or Wendy\u2019s, or any of that. Hanna Seymour says there are a lot of reasons why.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I have seen so many students \/ so many friends <em>really<\/em> struggle with their faith, because for most of them it\u2019s the first time that they are introduced to a community of people that they love\u2014professors\/all these folks\u2014who, not only disagree, but like <em>strongly<\/em> disagree. A lot of students can\u2019t handle that, and it throws them a curve ball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, July 25<sup>th<\/sup>. Your children are going to face a lot of challenges as they head to college\u2014among them whether they\u2019re going to maintain a faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ll talk about that and more with Hanna Seymour today. Aren\u2019t you about to have a grandchild go off to college pretty quickly?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Eighteen-year-old\u2014I think he\u2019s getting ready to go to Biola.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So it\u2019s a guy headed off to college\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014not a girl.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Very smart\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014a leader.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Are you concerned about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019ll take over Biola. [Laughter] I mean, that\u2019s just all there is to it. There\u2019s more than one way to take over the world\u2014we\u2019re going to do it through our grandkids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Through your grandkids. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got a great guest with us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. She\u2019s been with us here all this week. Hanna, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Always good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m just surprised you came back\u2014the way Bob and I\u2019ve insulted you. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh! We\u2019ve been <em>kind<\/em> to her all\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> You\u2019ve been very kind\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> \u2014and I was prepped by my father; so\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, her father and mother are Michael and Cindy Easley and former president of Moody Bible Institute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your dad is a part of our <em>Art of Parenting<\/em>\u2122 video series, so our listeners may know him from that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Hanna\u2019s written a book called <em>The College Girl\u2019s Survival Guide<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBefore we get to that, I just thought this would be a fun question to ask\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014the daughter of Michael and Cindy Easley.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s my favorite question\u2014do you know what it is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t listen to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Wait\u2014I know what it is if it\u2019s your favorite.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; what is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026when you exhibited courage?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cWhat is the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in all your life?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> See; she does know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I know\u2014I know you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s because she knows my daughter, not because she listens to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> You know, the sad thing is\u2014I kind of thought, \u201cI should probably prepare my answer for that,\u201d and I still didn\u2019t. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So you\u2019re, now, thinking it through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Courage is doing your duty in the face of fear. When have you faced down fear and done your duty, as a young lady?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Two circumstances come to mind, and I\u2019ll share the first one. Maybe, if we have time, I\u2019ll share the second one; but the first one was\u2014I was working at a private secular institution. My job at that school was a lot of crisis-behavioral response; so I would respond if a student exhibited any thoughts of suicide, or if they had been sexually assaulted\u2014any of these high-risk issues I would respond and assess the student. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpecifically, with suicide ideation, I would have to show up on scene and talk to them long enough to decide if they needed to be hospitalized or if they were safe enough to be left in their dorm room. Part of that job\u2014of course, it was a secular university, so I\u2019m not allowed to talk about Jesus \/ I\u2019m not allowed to share the gospel\u2014that would be a fire-able offense. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember it was my <em>very<\/em> first solo crisis. I show up. A roommate lets me in and splits. I\u2019m looking at this young woman, sitting in the corner of her dorm room. Her head is buried into her body. She\u2019s essentially in the fetal position, rocking back and forth. I spent, I bet, an hour trying to get her to even just come out of her shell. Truly, for her to lift up her face and just make eye contact with me, I spent an hour. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, this whole time, I\u2019m walking into that room, praying. I\u2019m praying as I\u2019m talking to her. Over, and over, and over I just kept feeling so compelled: \u201cThe only answer for this young woman is Jesus right now. That\u2019s it. There\u2019s nothing you can say to her that\u2019s going to get her to make eye contact with you, unless we go into the spiritual realm.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hate to say it, but I was terrified. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was terrified that\u2014it was my first time to do it by myself. If it was going to get back to my boss, I would be fired. After enough prodding, truly by the Holy Spirit, I knew: \u201cYou know what? This is a risk worth taking. It doesn\u2019t matter if I\u2019m fired. This young lady is truly on the verge of killing herself; and since the only answer for her is knowing that there is a God who loves her, and who created her, and who has a unique plan for her life, and that\u2019s she\u2019s worthy and valuable,\u201d\u2014and all these things that can only be known from the truth of the gospel\u2014I knew I had to share that with her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did\u2014just slowly started\u2014said her name and said, \u201cOkay; I have to tell you something that I\u2019m probably not allowed to tell you,\u201d and slowly shared some biblical truth and walked her through the gospel. Did she place her faith in Christ that day?\u2014no; I actually don\u2019t know what happened to her. I know that we connected, and we talked and sat there for about an hour. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I walked her to be hospitalized, because she wasn\u2019t safe. But that\u2014I think that is one of my more courageous moments.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019ve had a lot of experience with college students \/ high school-graduating girls in preparing them for the college experience. You wrote your book; in fact, in response to questions that some of these incoming freshmen girls had written you, asking about situations they were facing. You\u2019ve written your book down as 52 questions or issues that you\u2019re addressing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the big issues is sex, alcohol, and parties.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What is going to be the reality of what your daughter will face on the university campus?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; so it is everywhere, whether it\u2019s sex\u2014a hook-up culture is rampant\u2014lots of drinking \/ lots of drugs\u2014and it\u2019s not just weed. There\u2019s\u2014I mean, one of the universities I worked at\u2014there was heroin everywhere, so it\u2019s out there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParents\u2014one: just to be communicating with their students, saying: \u201cHey, I know that this stuff is out there, and I know you\u2019re going to see it. Let\u2019s talk about what you\u2019re going to do.\u201d I remember walking into one of my first really big college parties and seeing cocaine for the first time. Right then, your student has a decision to make: \u201cI can stay here and fend for myself, and we\u2019ll see how that goes,\u201d or \u201cI can choose to turn around and walk out.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven talking through those scenarios, I <em>knew<\/em>\u2014I had processed that \/ already thought through: \u201cWhat am I going to do when I see cocaine? I\u2019m going to walk out,\u201d and that\u2019s what I did. Maybe, I would have been fine had I stayed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI worked really hard in college\u2014I talk about this in my book: \u201cIf you are <em>strong<\/em> in your principles, and strong in your faith, and you\u2019re rooted in a <em>strong<\/em> Christian community that stick around you and keep you accountable, I think you can exist in that party culture without losing your mind. You take your own\u2014I talk about I took a six-pack of Fresca<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and I drank. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tToday, I would take La Croix<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>; but you take your own non-alcoholic beverages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was part of an A Cappella group. I wanted to be part of that community and be there for my friends without engaging in risky behavior. I think it\u2019s possible, but you\u2019ve got to be real certain that you can continue to be a light in the darkness and not let the darkness snuff you out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So when that group says: \u201cOkay; we\u2019re done. We\u2019re going <em>partying<\/em>!\u201d did Hanna go?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and drank Fresca?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And they were like\u2014was anybody trying to save you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Oh sure. I mean, I tease in my book\u2014there\u2019s a thing called a koozie. If you\u2019re from the south, you know what a koozie is. If you\u2019re not, it\u2019s a thing that wraps around your can or bottle and insulates it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and can protect the identity of the beverage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes! I used that, not because I was afraid of\u2014it\u2019s not that I wanted people to think I was drinking\u2014just took some of the peer pressure down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tObviously, if they looked closely, they knew it was a Fresca. It wasn\u2019t a Budweiser<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> or whatever everyone else was drinking around me, but it took some of the pressure off. For the most part, if you\u2019re going around\u2014and you\u2019re with good friends that know what you stand for\u2014they usually kind of let go, after a while, and: \u201cOh, that\u2019s just Hanna. You know, she\u2026\u201d They know you\u2019re going to be the one taking care of them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow many girls did I walk home and make sure that they were safe?\u2014did I care for when they got sick? I mean\u2014and that\u2019s another thing you\u2019ve got to decide: \u201cDo you want to be the mom?\u201d Maybe you don\u2019t; and so maybe you don\u2019t even engage in that area of the social world, but I wanted to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you ever have a night, where you said: \u201cYou know what? Forget all of this. I\u2019m just going to party like everybody else parties\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> So, once I was 21, I would drink occasionally\u2014I talk about this in my book. I had a rule\u2014I would set my number: \u201cOkay; you can have <em>a<\/em> beer\u2014one beer at this party.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As long as you don\u2019t set your number at eight.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Right, right, right. I set my number, but I talk about it in the book, too; there were nights I didn\u2019t set a number. Did I ever make some crazy, horrible, life-altering mistake or consequence? No; I\u2019m grateful\u2014I think, by God\u2019s grace, He protected me and took care of me. I truly never made any kind of dumb decision based on drinking too much, but I still always regretted it the next morning: (A) I woke up feeling bad\/just sick and (B) I knew I wasn\u2019t pleasing to the Lord. I really did care about that, as a college student\u2014I wanted to honor God \/ I wanted to please Him. But, yes, sometimes the whims of your friends, and not having a plan and sticking to it, gets the best of you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Curiosity, where somebody says, \u201cJust try a hit off of this,\u201d\u2014was that tempting to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Drugs\u2014it was not. I don\u2019t know if that is part of my upbringing. My dad\u2019s story\u2014he would say he tried every drug except needles; he did everything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that was a huge part of his story. He came to Christ during the middle of a bad trip\u2014he was suicidal, on drugs. I mean, nothing but the Holy Spirit came over him to say, \u201cYou need to not kill yourself, and you need to turn your life around.\u201d When he came out from that drug experience\u2014that was it for him. He decided to run after the Lord with everything he had. I think <em>knowing<\/em> that part of my dad\u2019s story\u2014drugs weren\u2019t appealing to me. I had heard how it unfolded in his life and that seemed good enough to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You worked with a lot of college students and, undoubtedly, encountered sexual assault. How prevalent is it on the college campus? I\u2019ve got a couple of follow-up questions after you answer that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> It is <em>very<\/em> prevalent. One in four women in college will experience sexual assault. That\u2019s not one in four will have in their lifetime, by the time they get to college\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that is, during their time in college, one in four will experience sexual assault. One out of every four sexual assaults actually happens to a male student, so it\u2019s also common for guys to be experiencing sexual assault in college. Most of the time, it\u2019s wrapped in the party scene; because you\u2019re drinking too much \/ they\u2019re drinking too much\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alcohol is involved; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>\u2014there\u2019s drugs, whatever; and <em>you<\/em> are unable to fend for yourself. You\u2019re unable to say, \u201cNo.\u201d You\u2019re unable just to walk away from a bad situation. I have counseled and hugged so many college women, and some men\u2014whether it was the morning after, a week after, two years later\u2014it\u2019s <em>very<\/em> prevalent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s talk about after it happens. Two questions around this: \u201cWhat would you say to a young lady who had experienced this in her life?\u201d and then: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat would you say to your daughter, if she\u2019s going away to college and she encounters a roommate, who\u2019s been sexually assaulted, what should she do?\u201d Answer both of those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; so what I say\u2014and what I tell folks to say when they\u2019re responding to a sexual assault survivor is always, number one: \u201cI\u2019m so sorry that this happened to you! I\u2019m <em>so<\/em> sorry.\u201d Number two\u2014asking the question: \u201cAre you okay?\u201d I know that might sound stupid\u2014like, \u201cOf course, I\u2019m not okay!\u201d But it\u2019s a non-judgmental\u2014just: \u201cHey, I\u2019m here to listen\u2014whatever you want to say \/ however you want to respond to that question: \u2018Are you okay?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Offer grace and compassion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes! Yes! Three: \u201cIt\u2019s not your fault. It is <em>not<\/em> your fault, no matter what happened. No matter what choices, decisions, mistakes you may or may not have made along the way, it\u2019s not your fault.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then four, \u201cI\u2019m here to help you however I can.\u201d Some women are ready to get help the next day\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they want to go get a medical examination; they want to go to counseling center; they want to report it. Some women <em>never<\/em> want to do any of those things; some women want to report it after two years, whatever. Knowing it is a <em>process<\/em>\u2014it is a marathon, not a sprint, of healing and recovering from sexual assault.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And so equipping your daughter to be\u2014not a professional counselor\u2014but she will, undoubtedly, if one in four are being assaulted, that means\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> \u2014she\u2019ll hear about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; if she\u2019s a part of a group of four women.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; and to know most college campuses have a counseling center. Most of them are <em>free<\/em> to students; if not, it is a <em>very good deal<\/em>\u2014but for students to know that\u2019s on your campus \/ that\u2019s a resource for you. If you have <em>no idea<\/em> where to turn; or if you\u2019ve got a roommate, who was sexually assaulted; or who mentioned she\u2019s thinking about hurting herself\u2014any of those things\u2014know the easiest place to go is always that college counseling center.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hanna, it sounds like your moral principles stayed intact throughout your four years of college. Did your faith stay grounded throughout those four years, as well, or did it waver?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>It did. I had two of my bigger seasons of doubt and just confusion in the faith in middle school and high school. Truly, by the time I went off to college, I had decided I was all in. I believed that Jesus was who He says He is and that the Bible is true, and that I was going to go in 100 percent and try to live a life that was worthy of that calling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have seen <em>so many<\/em> students \/ so many friends <em>really<\/em> struggle with their faith, because for most of them it\u2019s the first time that they are introduced to a community of people that they love\u2014professors\/all these folks\u2014who, not only disagree, but like <em>strongly<\/em> disagree. I was the token conservative Christian in the classroom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, I let that be known\u2014I was sharing, in class, things I believed; but I would be called upon. I was a sociology and psychology double major\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow; wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>\u2014so from a very liberal discipline. They would call me and go: \u201cWell, Hanna, what do you think about that?\u201d or \u201cWhat would <em>your<\/em> parents have said about that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026people like you think about this?\u201d\u2014right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Right; but a lot of students can\u2019t handle that, and it throws them a curve ball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and they wilt under pressure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and they withdraw from their Christian faith, thinking they should be ashamed of it; when, in reality, the Christian faith can stand up in any college classroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Absolutely, but the adversary is louder and seems more intelligent than the knowledge they\u2019re able to defend themselves with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I heard a pastor say one time\u2014I thought this was kind of\u2014I thought it was shrewd. I just wondered how accurate it was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cWhen I\u2019m talking to a college student, who says to me, \u2018I\u2019m starting to have questions and doubts about God,\u2019\u201d\u2014he would say\u2014\u201cWhen did you start sleeping with your girlfriend?\u201d [Laughter] It\u2019s one of those interesting observations. There is this tension: \u201cIf I really believe this and hold on to this, it\u2019s going to be limiting.\u201d It was limiting for you; it kept your guidelines in place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But if I\u2019m drawn toward college life\u2014and what looks like fun on the other side\u2014that\u2019s in conflict with what I was taught, growing up. Now, I need some cover; so I have doubts, which gives me cover to be able to head off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So how much of the faith doubting\u2014that students are doing\u2014do you think is because they want to party?\u2014and how much of it is because, in the classroom, they heard a science professor say, \u201cThere is no way that all this happened this way\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s funny, because I think that pastor is spot-on; but I\u2019ve never thought about it in that way. In my book, I answer the question: \u201cDo I really want to save sex for marriage?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI talk about how, when a girl approaches me with that question, I take five steps back and go: \u201cOkay; let\u2019s talk about: \u2018Do you believe that God\u2019s story is the best way to live? Do you think that it\u2019s better to serve God and what He wants or to serve yourself and what you want?\u2019\u201d\u2014so <em>similar<\/em>\u2014but a little bit different angle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes; you\u2019re right. A lot of it probably has to do with: \u201cLife seems less fun, as a Christian, in college.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I really believe that the bottom-line is: \u201cWe have to trust that God\u2019s way is for our good and to trust in that,\u201d\u2014and it is\u2014we know that, sitting at this table. The fact that I didn\u2019t have sex before marriage has been just a giant blessing on my life; but sure, it could have felt like I missed out on a whole lot of fun while I was in college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And anybody who says that: \u201cMuch of what happens at college isn\u2019t fun,\u201d and also \u201c\u2026isn\u2019t wrong,\u201d\u2014they\u2019re lying to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, there is pleasure in sin for a season.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> That\u2019s right\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There really is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s the problem\u2014it grows up into a bitter harvest, and that\u2019s what we don\u2019t calculate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sitting here, thinking about the Book of Proverbs. I asked my daughter, Laura, what she remembered most about Barbara and me as we parented her and prepared her as she went away to college; to work; and ultimately, to marriage. One of the things she mentioned was a Proverbs Bible study that she and I did once a week\u2014we didn\u2019t do it every week\u2014but on a Thursday morning, I\u2019d take her to a local restaurant that was cheap\u2014[Laughter]\u2014because I had to take all of them, ultimately. It was a pretty costly discipleship experience\u2014now that I think about it. [Laughter] But it had donuts, and it had good food\u2014eggs and bacon and all that\u2014but she mentioned that as being, really, an important anchoring time for her as she went away to college. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think your book does a great job of preparing a young person to protect their faith; secondly, to protect their morals; and third, to know how to handle the temptations that are going to come their way. Your book spells out the issues girls are going to face on the college and university campus. A parent would do well to take a senior year\u2014there\u2019s 52 in here; you could take one a week\u2014now, you won\u2019t want to do that; but you could take a couple of these questions a week, over a 36-week period. You could go through Hanna\u2019s book and talk about these issues, because they are the real stuff of what\u2019s happening out there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHanna, you did a great job. Now, you\u2019ve got to twist Tyler \/ your husband\u2019s arm and tell him to write\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the boys\u2019 book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014<em>The College Boys<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the guys\u2019 guide.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> \u2014<em>The Guys\u2019 Survival Guide<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; <em>The Guys\u2019 Survival Guide<\/em>\u2014hope you\u2019ll both come back next time and join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Thanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We can be honest; can\u2019t we? I\u2019m just\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was\u2014you\u2019re laughing about me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He called it a restaurant. I just wanted our listeners to understand it\u2019s the caf\u00e9 at Kroger that he took her to, and it was affordable. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was the only one near the school. Let\u2019s just say we didn\u2019t have the McDonald\u2019s, or Wendy\u2019s, or any of that.
