Because most parents never even utter those words or topics with their student going off to college. Just to say: \u201cHey, I know the day we leave you on the college campus, you\u2019re going to be offered alcohol. You\u2019re probably going to be offered weed, maybe even harder drugs. Let\u2019s talk about what you\u2019re going to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, July 23<sup>rd<\/sup>. Thanks for joining us. I think this is just a case of blatant unadulterated sexism. I think it\u2019s just completely <em>wrong<\/em>; we\u2019re not talking at <em>all<\/em> about guys going off to college. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, there\u2019s going to be plenty of application for guys going off to college\u2014[Laughter]\u2014plenty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But it\u2019s all about girls going to college. Where\u2019s the college guy\u2019s survival guide to college?\u2014where\u2019s that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I thought you were going to <em>accuse<\/em> our guest of only being on this program because my daughter, Laura\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No; that\u2019s nepotism\u2014that\u2019s a whole different subject, and that comes up later on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>: Our youngest daughter, Laura, <em>loves<\/em> Hanna Seymour\u2014and she says: \u201cDad,\u201d [pounding the table] \u201cyou have to get her on the program. You <em>must<\/em> have her on the program.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>: And as Dennis can tell you, he\u2019s come to me many times and said, \u201cLet\u2019s get this person.\u201d I said, \u201cNo, no, no.\u201d But when Laura says\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Power of a daughter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But when Laura says, \u201cWe have to have\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, the power!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Power of a daughter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Hanna, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re here because of Laura.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Well, bless Laura.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>: Bless Laura; huh?\u00a0 [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Hanna Seymour is married to Tyler since 2014\u2014has a little boy named Isaac. She is an author, a blogger, and a former student development professional on the university campus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There is such a thing?\u2014a student development professional? [Laughter] We did not have those when I went to college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>The verbiage keeps changing\/growing\u2014you know, more important sounding. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So here\u2019s what we\u2019re facing\u201412 million young ladies will go to college this year\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014according to the <em>Boston Globe<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you say in your book that they\u2019re glittering preconceptions are shattered. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I want to know: \u201c\u2026such as?\u201d\u2014what are their preconceptions about going to college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Well, they have been told that college is going to be the <em>best<\/em> four years of their life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf they haven\u2019t been told <em>that<\/em>\u2014I was even told, well-meaning: \u201cYou were born for college,\u201d\u2014I did good in high school\u2014\u201cbut college\u2014Hanna, for you, that\u2019s going to be it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re sending off our 18-year-olds with this idea that the next four years are going to be <em>incredible<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s all about self-discovery: \u201cWho am I? What do I want to do with my life?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s elements of that, but there\u2019s a lot of hardship; there\u2019s a lot of challenges; there\u2019s a lot of conflict. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not that college isn\u2019t a <em>great<\/em> season \/ a great time of life; but 18- to 22-year-olds get smacked in the face, over and over again, with roommate conflicts\/homesickness. They don\u2019t know what they want to major in. They don\u2019t know what they want to do with their life. \u201cWhere\u2019s my future husband?\u201d or \u201cWhere\u2019s my boyfriend?\u2014or the party scene, sex, drugs, alcohol\u2014<em>so many<\/em> things going on. They just get <em>sideswiped<\/em> with these difficult things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that\u2019s why you wrote <em>The College Girl\u2019s Survival Guide<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I did. Part of that was I\u2019d been working with college students. I knew the issues they were facing, but I was also volunteering in high school ministry. I was graduating groups of girls, sending them off to college; and I wanted to give them a book that might help prepare them to start thinking about some of these things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhile there are dozens and dozens\u2014really, hundreds\/thousands probably\u2014of high school graduation gift books, I was looking for something really specific\u2014something practical, easy to read, but grounded in biblical truths. I just never found what I wanted. Finally, I decided, \u201cI think I can write this!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ll just write that!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> \u201cI think I can write this!\u201d\u2014and so that\u2019s that book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it is for <em>girls<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But some of these <em>issues<\/em>\u2014I mean, \u201cWhat\u2019s my major going to be?\u201d\u2014that\u2019s a gender-neutral issue. There are some specific issues that make going to college for a girl different than going to college for a boy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Sure; yes. I would say the majority of it really is applicable to both men and women. I blogged about a lot of these issues for years. I would have college boys come up to me and say, \u201cI secretly read your blog every week\u201d; you know? [Laughter] I mean\u2014so it\u2019s totally applicable. I just always say: \u201cIf you sat me down in front of a computer screen and said, \u2018Hanna write to the college boy.\u2019 Uh?!\u201d\u2014you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I was never a college boy; I\u2019ve never been a man. I don\u2019t\u2014you know, it\u2019s the\u2014naturally, what comes for me is thinking about an audience of women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; I want to go back to when you went to college. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna<\/strong>: Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Both Bob and I know your mom and dad, Michael and Cindy Easley. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>When you chose to go to college, you escaped the jail\u2014you went 12 hours away from mom and dad! You had the perfect parents! Why would you try to get so far away from them? [Laughter] I\u2019ve been waiting to ask this question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Oh, that\u2019s good, Dennis. I like that. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know\u2014I mean, truthfully\u2014I wanted to get away; you\u2019re right. I applied to one school, and it was 12 hours away. I was <em>determined<\/em> to get away from family obligations\u2014you know, big sister of three siblings\u2014community obligations \/ the church\u2014grew up a PK at a very large church. I wanted to escape everything that had been both good and negative\u2014all those experiences. I wanted a fresh start. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s funny is that I found out, a few months in, that I was running away from something that was <em>so vital<\/em> to my identity that I couldn\u2019t\u2014I could get 12 hours away from it, but I couldn\u2019t truly escape it. I needed to embrace it and understand that God\u2019s plan for my life was rooted in the legacy of my parents, my family, that church\u2014all of those things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You actually were trying to do your own thing\u2014you were trying to do the selfish thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>I was, because I\u2019d heard that college was a time to be selfish. Again, back to this\u2014our culture tells students: \u201cCollege is a time of self-discovery.\u201d Well, okay; but what Scripture tells us is that you\u2019re already fully-known. God has created you. He has a plan for you. You are fully known by the Creator of the universe. If 18-year-olds went into college with <em>that<\/em> as their foundation, how would that change their exploration versus \u201cI need to \u2018find myself\u2019\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; I tell moms and dads, often, that Ephesians 2:10 is a great place for moms and dads to be. Your child is \u201c\u2026His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that they should walk in them.\u201d So God has prepared them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not up to you to prepare the path for your child to walk in; but you do have an assignment, which is help your child find that path and know how to walk in that path. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMoms and dads need to be on this journey with a son or a daughter rather than just saying: \u201cOkay; you\u2019re off to college now. Now, figure out what it is that you want to be and what you want to do.\u201d Part of this comes down to helping your child figure out: \u201cWhat are my gifts? What am I good at? What are my passions and desires? How could I use that for God\u2019s glory?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a kind of intentional thinking that will help a young girl, or a young guy, as they\u2019re headed off to college rather than just, \u201cI\u2019m going to go explore.\u201d \u201cWell, let\u2019s have some direction going in here rather than just, \u2018I don\u2019t have a clue,\u2019\u201d\u2014right?\u2014isn\u2019t that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Oh, absolutely! Even at a really young age\u2014and thinking about this, Dennis, my dad may have just ripped this off from you\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but my whole life, my dad never said, \u201cWell, what do you want to be when you grow up?\u201d He would say, \u201cWhat do you think God wants you to be when you grow up?!\u201d\u2014such a subtle change. The intentionality is there and helped me\u2014and, I think, my siblings\u2014switch our perspective from, again, self-navel gazing of: \u201cWho do I want to be?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and, oh, again: \u201cI was created for a purpose,\u201d\u2014just like you said\u2014\u201c\u2019\u2026He has planned, in advance, works for me to walk in,\u2019\u2014\u201cWhat might God have for me?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You started with a vocal performance major; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, you are headed in that direction, but it took God intercepting you with a mentor. This has to be the result of your parents\u2019 prayers, maybe some grandparents. [Laughter] God has His ways of getting our kids attention when we <em>can\u2019t<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Yes. I mean, really, it wasn\u2019t the advice of a mentor at first; it was me falling on my face. I went off to college as a vocal performance major. Truly, I had spent probably 14 years studying music\u2014preparing\/training. It was my goal to go into music business. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI get to school. I\u2019m realizing I\u2019m not the best in the room anymore. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also don\u2019t even <em>want it<\/em> the most in the room anymore\u2014so: \u201cOkay; I probably need to have a little pivot.\u201d\u00a0 I switched to classical music\u2014I did that for another year. I got to the end of my rope, really realizing my identity was <em>completely<\/em> wrapped up in how I performed each week in my studio. If I did excellent that week, I felt <em>great<\/em> about myself; if I didn\u2019t do well, I felt <em>horrible<\/em> about myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized I did not want my identity wrapped up in my vocal performance. Then I just felt completely lost, because I had spent 14 years preparing for <em>one thing<\/em>. It took this staff member to say: \u201cHey, have you ever thought about doing what I do? You\u2019re super involved in college. You\u2019ve been an RA; you\u2019re a student leader. Why don\u2019t you go get your masters in this?\u2014come back and mentor students like yourself.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat, for me, was a light bulb of, \u201cOkay; I think that is what I want to pursue.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, looking back, God has wired me\u2014He\u2019s given me strengths and skills that fit in that\u2014and He\u2019s given me experiences that add up to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You started doing that; and in the midst of doing that, as a vocation, you also started something with high school seniors in your church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I did. I was about two years into working fulltime on a college campus. I was having conversations with students, who had been raised in the Christian faith and were having <em>significant<\/em> doubts. I am just disheartened and struggling\u2014I\u2019m trying to stay in conversation with these students and trying to continue to bring them back to truth and Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOver time, I thought: \u201cMan, the problem is these students are going off to college and they have <em>no idea<\/em> why they believe what they believe. Okay; what can I do to help this?!\u201d Eventually I decided: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI think I\u2019m going to start working in high school ministry; and if I can just graduate 12 girls,\u201d\u2014I just got this number\u2014\u201c\u2026if I could graduate 12 girls and send them off to college\u2014and if 12 of them knew why they believed what they believed: what the Bible said, who God is, who they are in light of that\u2014if I could accomplish just that, I will have done something significant with this life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When I think about this\u2014as a parent, I think about a kid heading off to school\u2014my biggest fears are: \u201cThey\u2019re going to get involved in inappropriate sexual relationships,\u201d \u201cThey\u2019re going to do binge drinking; and it\u2019s going to evolve from that to smoking weed and the rest,\u201d\u2014or then third thing is\u2014\u201cThey\u2019re going to get in some classroom, and some professor is going to spin their thinking around, and they\u2019re going to shipwreck their faith.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Those are probably the three biggest fears I have, as a parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And can I give you a fourth one? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know that a lot of young people will establish relationships, their freshman year, that are going to go <em>all the way<\/em> through college. If you get in the right crowd\u2014I\u2019m talking about a spiritually-grounded crowd\u2014they can pull and tug you along with them; that has a positive impact on your faith. On the other hand, if you don\u2019t go anywhere near those kind of friends, it is back to 1 Corinthians 15:33: \u201cBad company corrupts good morals.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I know your book is written to the girls, who are high school seniors, who are headed to college; but let\u2019s talk to the moms and dads for a little bit. With those fears in mind\u2014and with a high school senior, who has graduated \/ she\u2019s headed off to college\u2014and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cOkay; I don\u2019t want her to head off and start drinking in her freshman year and wind up drinking too much and getting taken advantage of.\u201d Can I do anything about that, as a parent?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; so I mean\u2014one, I think, making sure that your expectations of your student has been communicated to them. You want to sit your child down and say: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHey, I know these are things you\u2019re going to be facing. I know it\u2019s going to be <em>hard<\/em>. One, I\u2019m here for you. If you want to talk about it, let\u2019s talk. If you make a mistake, come back to me and let\u2019s talk about it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven just the acknowledgement of \u201cHey, I know that stuff is going on your campus; I know you\u2019re going to face it,\u201d I think goes <em>so much<\/em> farther than parents think; because most parents never even utter those words or topics with their student, going off to college\u2014just to say: \u201cHey, I know the day we leave you on that college campus, you\u2019re going to be offered alcohol. You\u2019re probably going to be offered weed, maybe even harder drugs. Let\u2019s talk about \u2018What are you going to do?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other thing that I\u2019ve heard my dad say a thousand times: \u201cThey are free agents,\u201d\u2014and that is <em>so hard<\/em> to hear, as a parent. I mean, I can\u2019t imagine. I have a four-and-a-half month old\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I don\u2019t know what that\u2019s going to be like when I send my firstborn off to college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me tell you\u2014hard! [Laughter] Look at me closely\u2014very hard!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I remember my parents weeping as they dropped me off. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I have that picture; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Mr. Lepine, over here\u2014he became putty on the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>: I\u2019m pretty stoic, but not that day; no! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> But they are\u2014they are free agents. They\u2019re <em>going<\/em> to make mistakes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, again, parents underestimate the <em>power<\/em> of their own shared story. Parents, if you went off to college and you made a bunch of mistakes \/ had a bunch of successes\u2014whatever\u2014finding opportunity to share those with your student so that <em>they<\/em> can learn from your own story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mom shared with me her story of\u2014really, she had been raised in the Christian faith; but truly did not make a decision to follow Christ 100 percent until her senior year of college. She sat down and shared that part of her story with me during a time when I was kind of half-in\/half-out, not really sure who I was wanting to serve, myself or the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo hear her share that story\u2014to be able to imagine my mom, as a 21-year-old, deciding: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOkay; I can keep one foot in\/one foot out. I can go to church; I can party on the weekends; and\u201d\u2014you know\u2014\u201ccontinue doing \u2018X,\u2019 \u2018Y,\u2019 \u2018Z\u2019; <em>or<\/em> I can decide to own this. If I own this, this means that the gospel has transformed my life enough to where my daily habits look different.\u201d Just her sharing that with me\u2014I mean, the fact that I can still share that with you today\u2014that mattered. It stuck with me, and it helped <em>me<\/em> in my own decision-making process during my similar journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But, Hanna, there\u2019s a lot of parents, wholistened to you tell that story about your mom: \u201cI could <em>never<\/em> share how I failed\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cin college, because I\u2019m going to ruin and blow the image I\u2019ve been trying to keep for my kids.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I <em>totally<\/em> get that; but <em>your<\/em> child, especially\u2014and I have two incredible godly parents\u2014I needed to see my parents as sinners. I know that sounds maybe crazy, but it truly\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I mean, I joke\u2014I didn\u2019t know that my mom was a sinner until I was in college. It\u2019s not\u2014I mean, I look back; and I could think about times that, you know, maybe she got angry and whatever. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Both Bob and I know your mom\u2014we agree with you. [Laughter] Now, your dad\u2014that\u2019s another\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Oh, I knew he was a big fat sinner\u2014no; I\u2019m just kidding; I\u2019m just kidding. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI needed to know that they were sinners. I needed to <em>see<\/em> how they received God\u2019s grace, because I needed to be able to confront my <em>own<\/em> sin and also receive God\u2019s grace. <em>And<\/em> I needed to learn to extend God\u2019s grace to my parents, because I think that was also part of the childhood-to-adulthood process. As I become an adult, I start relating to my parents differently. Our relationship changes, and I needed to learn to extend grace to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of that to say: \u201cI think sharing your failures\u2014I can imagine how hard that is\u2014but it will go <em>so much<\/em> farther in your child\u2019s story than you pretending like you had it all together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I got to jump in here and just affirm that. As I\u2019ve worked, over the last couple of years, on the <em>Art of Parenting<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup> video series\u2014as you and Barbara have been working on the book on this\u2014I think, for me as a parent, as we were raising our kids, I thought, \u201cMy job is to be a model of righteousness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It is, but I thought any chink in that armor was a deficiency. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So what my kids never saw modeled was how to confess and repent, because I kept all that hidden. The other thing is\u2014in being a model of righteousness, I had kids, growing up, looking\/going, \u201cI\u2019m not like him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They knew themselves; they knew their own sin. They\u2019re looking at me and going: \u201cWell, I can\u2019t do what he does. I don\u2019t know what\u2019s wrong with <em>me<\/em>.\u201d It\u2019s because I was keeping\u2014I was keeping it hidden\u2014the fact that I was not perfectly virtuous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is where\u2014for a mom and dad to sit down and go: \u201cI struggle with this stuff too,\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve fallen into this stuff too,\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve made these mistakes when I was in college. I did this stuff wrong,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it does give your kids a sense of: \u201cOh, then I\u2019m not as flawed as I thought I was. It\u2019s not just me. This is a part of our shared human condition.\u201d That gives <em>relief<\/em> to a young person to know that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>: It really does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHanna, I\u2019m looking at the clock here; and I\u2019m going, I\u2019ve got to ask you this question\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cIf\u201d\u2014and this is tough. Bob doesn\u2019t like me to ask these kinds of questions\u2014[Laughter]\u2014\u201cIf you could give an incoming freshman, who\u2019s about to go to the university, one piece of advice\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cOf <em>all<\/em> the advice there is\u2014you\u2019re thinking through everything\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> There\u2019s 52 in my book!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I know, Hanna!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Alright; we know about the 52 in the book. But I\u2019m just saying: \u201cYou\u2019ve got <em>one<\/em> shot.\u201d I\u2019m thinking of: \u201cOkay; you\u2019re surrounded by 12 girls, and they are about to graduate. You\u2019re about to say good-bye.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I don\u2019t even know if it\u2019s advice as much as it is the reminder that: \u201cGod created you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHe gave you a unique set of skills and experiences, and He has a plan for your life. If you can keep that in mind, as you walk through the four years of college, your experience in college will look <em>so<\/em> different from your peers.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re talking about being on a mission\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014talking about fulfilling the Master\u2019s desires for your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> That\u2019s it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Paul said that we are ambassadors for Christ. That means, when we step outside our dorm room\u2014if we\u2019re a freshman\u2014we step out of the embassy \/ the embassy of the King. We step into the world, representing Jesus Christ and the gospel; because there\u2019s a bunch of lost people, who really need to\u2014well, they need somebody, who\u2019s got skin on, to show them what the love of God looks like. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut they also need to hear about the good news of forgiveness through Jesus Christ, too; and you, as a young lady or a young man, may be just the person they need to hear that good news from. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just thinking about the number of parents listening, who, in a couple of weeks, are going to be packing up the car, heading off with their children\u2014or sending their children\u2014off to college and all of the things they\u2019re facing. It would be good for them, especially if they have daughters, to get a copy of <em>The College Girl\u2019s Survival Guide <\/em>and give them a copy. Maybe read through a few of them and highlight some things before you hand it off to your child. Because most parents never even utter those words or topics with their student going off to college. Just to say: \u201cHey, I know the day we leave you on the college campus, you\u2019re going to be offered alcohol. You\u2019re probably going to be offered weed, maybe even harder drugs. Thanks for joining us. I think this is just a case of blatant unadulterated sexism. I think it\u2019s just completely <em>wrong<\/em>; we\u2019re not talking at <em>all<\/em> about guys going off to college. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, there\u2019s going to be plenty of application for guys going off to college\u2014[Laughter]\u2014plenty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But it\u2019s all about girls going to college. Where\u2019s the college guy\u2019s survival guide to college?\u2014where\u2019s that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I thought you were going to <em>accuse<\/em> our guest of only being on this program because my daughter, Laura\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No; that\u2019s nepotism\u2014that\u2019s a whole different subject, and that comes up later on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>: Our youngest daughter, Laura, <em>loves<\/em> Hanna Seymour\u2014and she says: \u201cDad,\u201d [pounding the table] \u201cyou have to get her on the program. She is an author, a blogger, and a former student development professional on the university campus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There is such a thing?\u2014a student development professional? [Laughter] We did not have those when I went to college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>The verbiage keeps changing\/growing\u2014you know, more important sounding. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So here\u2019s what we\u2019re facing\u201412 million young ladies will go to college this year\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014according to the <em>Boston Globe<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you say in your book that they\u2019re glittering preconceptions are shattered. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I want to know: \u201c\u2026such as?\u201d\u2014what are their preconceptions about going to college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Well, they have been told that college is going to be the <em>best<\/em> four years of their life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf they haven\u2019t been told <em>that<\/em>\u2014I was even told, well-meaning: \u201cYou were born for college,\u201d\u2014I did good in high school\u2014\u201cbut college\u2014Hanna, for you, that\u2019s going to be it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re sending off our 18-year-olds with this idea that the next four years are going to be <em>incredible<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s all about self-discovery: \u201cWho am I? What do I want to do with my life?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s elements of that, but there\u2019s a lot of hardship; there\u2019s a lot of challenges; there\u2019s a lot of conflict. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not that college isn\u2019t a <em>great<\/em> season \/ a great time of life; but 18- to 22-year-olds get smacked in the face, over and over again, with roommate conflicts\/homesickness. They don\u2019t know what they want to major in. They don\u2019t know what they want to do with their life. \u201cWhere\u2019s my future husband?\u201d or \u201cWhere\u2019s my boyfriend?\u2014or the party scene, sex, drugs, alcohol\u2014<em>so many<\/em> things going on. They just get <em>sideswiped<\/em> with these difficult things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that\u2019s why you wrote <em>The College Girl\u2019s Survival Guide<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I did. Part of that was I\u2019d been working with college students. I knew the issues they were facing, but I was also volunteering in high school ministry. I was graduating groups of girls, sending them off to college; and I wanted to give them a book that might help prepare them to start thinking about some of these things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhile there are dozens and dozens\u2014really, hundreds\/thousands probably\u2014of high school graduation gift books, I was looking for something really specific\u2014something practical, easy to read, but grounded in biblical truths. I just never found what I wanted. Finally, I decided, \u201cI think I can write this!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ll just write that!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> \u201cI think I can write this!\u201d\u2014and so that\u2019s that book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it is for <em>girls<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But some of these <em>issues<\/em>\u2014I mean, \u201cWhat\u2019s my major going to be?\u201d\u2014that\u2019s a gender-neutral issue. There are some specific issues that make going to college for a girl different than going to college for a boy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Sure; yes. I would say the majority of it really is applicable to both men and women. I blogged about a lot of these issues for years. I would have college boys come up to me and say, \u201cI secretly read your blog every week\u201d; you know? [Laughter] I mean\u2014so it\u2019s totally applicable. I just always say: \u201cIf you sat me down in front of a computer screen and said, \u2018Hanna write to the college boy.\u2019 Uh?!\u201d\u2014you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I was never a college boy; I\u2019ve never been a man. I don\u2019t\u2014you know, it\u2019s the\u2014naturally, what comes for me is thinking about an audience of women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; I want to go back to when you went to college. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna<\/strong>: Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Both Bob and I know your mom and dad, Michael and Cindy Easley. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>When you chose to go to college, you escaped the jail\u2014you went 12 hours away from mom and dad! You had the perfect parents! Why would you try to get so far away from them? [Laughter] I\u2019ve been waiting to ask this question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Oh, that\u2019s good, Dennis. I like that. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know\u2014I mean, truthfully\u2014I wanted to get away; you\u2019re right. I applied to one school, and it was 12 hours away. I was <em>determined<\/em> to get away from family obligations\u2014you know, big sister of three siblings\u2014community obligations \/ the church\u2014grew up a PK at a very large church. I wanted to escape everything that had been both good and negative\u2014all those experiences. I wanted a fresh start. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s funny is that I found out, a few months in, that I was running away from something that was <em>so vital<\/em> to my identity that I couldn\u2019t\u2014I could get 12 hours away from it, but I couldn\u2019t truly escape it. I needed to embrace it and understand that God\u2019s plan for my life was rooted in the legacy of my parents, my family, that church\u2014all of those things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You actually were trying to do your own thing\u2014you were trying to do the selfish thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>I was, because I\u2019d heard that college was a time to be selfish. Again, back to this\u2014our culture tells students: \u201cCollege is a time of self-discovery.\u201d Well, okay; but what Scripture tells us is that you\u2019re already fully-known. God has created you. He has a plan for you. You are fully known by the Creator of the universe. If 18-year-olds went into college with <em>that<\/em> as their foundation, how would that change their exploration versus \u201cI need to \u2018find myself\u2019\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; I tell moms and dads, often, that Ephesians 2:10 is a great place for moms and dads to be. Your child is \u201c\u2026His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that they should walk in them.\u201d So God has prepared them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not up to you to prepare the path for your child to walk in; but you do have an assignment, which is help your child find that path and know how to walk in that path. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMoms and dads need to be on this journey with a son or a daughter rather than just saying: \u201cOkay; you\u2019re off to college now. Now, figure out what it is that you want to be and what you want to do.\u201d Part of this comes down to helping your child figure out: \u201cWhat are my gifts? What am I good at? What are my passions and desires? How could I use that for God\u2019s glory?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a kind of intentional thinking that will help a young girl, or a young guy, as they\u2019re headed off to college rather than just, \u201cI\u2019m going to go explore.\u201d \u201cWell, let\u2019s have some direction going in here rather than just, \u2018I don\u2019t have a clue,\u2019\u201d\u2014right?\u2014isn\u2019t that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Oh, absolutely! Even at a really young age\u2014and thinking about this, Dennis, my dad may have just ripped this off from you\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but my whole life, my dad never said, \u201cWell, what do you want to be when you grow up?\u201d He would say, \u201cWhat do you think God wants you to be when you grow up?!\u201d\u2014such a subtle change. The intentionality is there and helped me\u2014and, I think, my siblings\u2014switch our perspective from, again, self-navel gazing of: \u201cWho do I want to be?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and, oh, again: \u201cI was created for a purpose,\u201d\u2014just like you said\u2014\u201c\u2019\u2026He has planned, in advance, works for me to walk in,\u2019\u2014\u201cWhat might God have for me?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You started with a vocal performance major; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, you are headed in that direction, but it took God intercepting you with a mentor. This has to be the result of your parents\u2019 prayers, maybe some grandparents. [Laughter] God has His ways of getting our kids attention when we <em>can\u2019t<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Yes. I mean, really, it wasn\u2019t the advice of a mentor at first; it was me falling on my face. I went off to college as a vocal performance major. Truly, I had spent probably 14 years studying music\u2014preparing\/training. It was my goal to go into music business. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI get to school. I\u2019m realizing I\u2019m not the best in the room anymore. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also don\u2019t even <em>want it<\/em> the most in the room anymore\u2014so: \u201cOkay; I probably need to have a little pivot.\u201d\u00a0 I switched to classical music\u2014I did that for another year. I got to the end of my rope, really realizing my identity was <em>completely<\/em> wrapped up in how I performed each week in my studio. If I did excellent that week, I felt <em>great<\/em> about myself; if I didn\u2019t do well, I felt <em>horrible<\/em> about myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized I did not want my identity wrapped up in my vocal performance. Then I just felt completely lost, because I had spent 14 years preparing for <em>one thing<\/em>. It took this staff member to say: \u201cHey, have you ever thought about doing what I do? You\u2019re super involved in college. You\u2019ve been an RA; you\u2019re a student leader. Why don\u2019t you go get your masters in this?\u2014come back and mentor students like yourself.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat, for me, was a light bulb of, \u201cOkay; I think that is what I want to pursue.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, looking back, God has wired me\u2014He\u2019s given me strengths and skills that fit in that\u2014and He\u2019s given me experiences that add up to that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You started doing that; and in the midst of doing that, as a vocation, you also started something with high school seniors in your church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I did. I was about two years into working fulltime on a college campus. I was having conversations with students, who had been raised in the Christian faith and were having <em>significant<\/em> doubts. I am just disheartened and struggling\u2014I\u2019m trying to stay in conversation with these students and trying to continue to bring them back to truth and Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOver time, I thought: \u201cMan, the problem is these students are going off to college and they have <em>no idea<\/em> why they believe what they believe. Okay; what can I do to help this?!\u201d Eventually I decided: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI think I\u2019m going to start working in high school ministry; and if I can just graduate 12 girls,\u201d\u2014I just got this number\u2014\u201c\u2026if I could graduate 12 girls and send them off to college\u2014and if 12 of them knew why they believed what they believed: what the Bible said, who God is, who they are in light of that\u2014if I could accomplish just that, I will have done something significant with this life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When I think about this\u2014as a parent, I think about a kid heading off to school\u2014my biggest fears are: \u201cThey\u2019re going to get involved in inappropriate sexual relationships,\u201d \u201cThey\u2019re going to do binge drinking; and it\u2019s going to evolve from that to smoking weed and the rest,\u201d\u2014or then third thing is\u2014\u201cThey\u2019re going to get in some classroom, and some professor is going to spin their thinking around, and they\u2019re going to shipwreck their faith.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Those are probably the three biggest fears I have, as a parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And can I give you a fourth one? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know that a lot of young people will establish relationships, their freshman year, that are going to go <em>all the way<\/em> through college. If you get in the right crowd\u2014I\u2019m talking about a spiritually-grounded crowd\u2014they can pull and tug you along with them; that has a positive impact on your faith. On the other hand, if you don\u2019t go anywhere near those kind of friends, it is back to 1 Corinthians 15:33: \u201cBad company corrupts good morals.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I know your book is written to the girls, who are high school seniors, who are headed to college; but let\u2019s talk to the moms and dads for a little bit. With those fears in mind\u2014and with a high school senior, who has graduated \/ she\u2019s headed off to college\u2014and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cOkay; I don\u2019t want her to head off and start drinking in her freshman year and wind up drinking too much and getting taken advantage of.\u201d Can I do anything about that, as a parent?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes; so I mean\u2014one, I think, making sure that your expectations of your student has been communicated to them. You want to sit your child down and say: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHey, I know these are things you\u2019re going to be facing. I know it\u2019s going to be <em>hard<\/em>. One, I\u2019m here for you. If you want to talk about it, let\u2019s talk. If you make a mistake, come back to me and let\u2019s talk about it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven just the acknowledgement of \u201cHey, I know that stuff is going on your campus; I know you\u2019re going to face it,\u201d I think goes <em>so much<\/em> farther than parents think; because most parents never even utter those words or topics with their student, going off to college\u2014just to say: \u201cHey, I know the day we leave you on that college campus, you\u2019re going to be offered alcohol. You\u2019re probably going to be offered weed, maybe even harder drugs. Let\u2019s talk about \u2018What are you going to do?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other thing that I\u2019ve heard my dad say a thousand times: \u201cThey are free agents,\u201d\u2014and that is <em>so hard<\/em> to hear, as a parent. I mean, I can\u2019t imagine. I have a four-and-a-half month old\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I don\u2019t know what that\u2019s going to be like when I send my firstborn off to college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me tell you\u2014hard! [Laughter] Look at me closely\u2014very hard!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I remember my parents weeping as they dropped me off. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I have that picture; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Mr. Lepine, over here\u2014he became putty on the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>: I\u2019m pretty stoic, but not that day; no! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> But they are\u2014they are free agents. They\u2019re <em>going<\/em> to make mistakes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, again, parents underestimate the <em>power<\/em> of their own shared story. Parents, if you went off to college and you made a bunch of mistakes \/ had a bunch of successes\u2014whatever\u2014finding opportunity to share those with your student so that <em>they<\/em> can learn from your own story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy mom shared with me her story of\u2014really, she had been raised in the Christian faith; but truly did not make a decision to follow Christ 100 percent until her senior year of college. She sat down and shared that part of her story with me during a time when I was kind of half-in\/half-out, not really sure who I was wanting to serve, myself or the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo hear her share that story\u2014to be able to imagine my mom, as a 21-year-old, deciding: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOkay; I can keep one foot in\/one foot out. I can go to church; I can party on the weekends; and\u201d\u2014you know\u2014\u201ccontinue doing \u2018X,\u2019 \u2018Y,\u2019 \u2018Z\u2019; <em>or<\/em> I can decide to own this. If I own this, this means that the gospel has transformed my life enough to where my daily habits look different.\u201d Just her sharing that with me\u2014I mean, the fact that I can still share that with you today\u2014that mattered. It stuck with me, and it helped <em>me<\/em> in my own decision-making process during my similar journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But, Hanna, there\u2019s a lot of parents, wholistened to you tell that story about your mom: \u201cI could <em>never<\/em> share how I failed\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cin college, because I\u2019m going to ruin and blow the image I\u2019ve been trying to keep for my kids.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I <em>totally<\/em> get that; but <em>your<\/em> child, especially\u2014and I have two incredible godly parents\u2014I needed to see my parents as sinners. I know that sounds maybe crazy, but it truly\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I mean, I joke\u2014I didn\u2019t know that my mom was a sinner until I was in college. It\u2019s not\u2014I mean, I look back; and I could think about times that, you know, maybe she got angry and whatever. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Both Bob and I know your mom\u2014we agree with you. [Laughter] Now, your dad\u2014that\u2019s another\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Oh, I knew he was a big fat sinner\u2014no; I\u2019m just kidding; I\u2019m just kidding. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI needed to know that they were sinners. I needed to <em>see<\/em> how they received God\u2019s grace, because I needed to be able to confront my <em>own<\/em> sin and also receive God\u2019s grace. <em>And<\/em> I needed to learn to extend God\u2019s grace to my parents, because I think that was also part of the childhood-to-adulthood process. As I become an adult, I start relating to my parents differently. Our relationship changes, and I needed to learn to extend grace to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of that to say: \u201cI think sharing your failures\u2014I can imagine how hard that is\u2014but it will go <em>so much<\/em> farther in your child\u2019s story than you pretending like you had it all together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I got to jump in here and just affirm that. As I\u2019ve worked, over the last couple of years, on the <em>Art of Parenting<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup> video series\u2014as you and Barbara have been working on the book on this\u2014I think, for me as a parent, as we were raising our kids, I thought, \u201cMy job is to be a model of righteousness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It is, but I thought any chink in that armor was a deficiency. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So what my kids never saw modeled was how to confess and repent, because I kept all that hidden. The other thing is\u2014in being a model of righteousness, I had kids, growing up, looking\/going, \u201cI\u2019m not like him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They knew themselves; they knew their own sin. They\u2019re looking at me and going: \u201cWell, I can\u2019t do what he does. I don\u2019t know what\u2019s wrong with <em>me<\/em>.\u201d It\u2019s because I was keeping\u2014I was keeping it hidden\u2014the fact that I was not perfectly virtuous. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is where\u2014for a mom and dad to sit down and go: \u201cI struggle with this stuff too,\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve fallen into this stuff too,\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve made these mistakes when I was in college. I did this stuff wrong,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it does give your kids a sense of: \u201cOh, then I\u2019m not as flawed as I thought I was. It\u2019s not just me. This is a part of our shared human condition.\u201d That gives <em>relief<\/em> to a young person to know that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>: It really does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHanna, I\u2019m looking at the clock here; and I\u2019m going, I\u2019ve got to ask you this question\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna: <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cIf\u201d\u2014and this is tough. Bob doesn\u2019t like me to ask these kinds of questions\u2014[Laughter]\u2014\u201cIf you could give an incoming freshman, who\u2019s about to go to the university, one piece of advice\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cOf <em>all<\/em> the advice there is\u2014you\u2019re thinking through everything\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> There\u2019s 52 in my book!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I know, Hanna!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Alright; we know about the 52 in the book. But I\u2019m just saying: \u201cYou\u2019ve got <em>one<\/em> shot.\u201d I\u2019m thinking of: \u201cOkay; you\u2019re surrounded by 12 girls, and they are about to graduate. You\u2019re about to say good-bye.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> I don\u2019t even know if it\u2019s advice as much as it is the reminder that: \u201cGod created you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHe gave you a unique set of skills and experiences, and He has a plan for your life. If you can keep that in mind, as you walk through the four years of college, your experience in college will look <em>so<\/em> different from your peers.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re talking about being on a mission\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> Yes \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014talking about fulfilling the Master\u2019s desires for your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hanna:<\/strong> That\u2019s it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Paul said that we are ambassadors for Christ. That means, when we step outside our dorm room\u2014if we\u2019re a freshman\u2014we step out of the embassy \/ the embassy of the King. We step into the world, representing Jesus Christ and the gospel; because there\u2019s a bunch of lost people, who really need to\u2014well, they need somebody, who\u2019s got skin on, to show them what the love of God looks like. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut they also need to hear about the good news of forgiveness through Jesus Christ, too; and you, as a young lady or a young man, may be just the person they need to hear that good news from. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just thinking about the number of parents listening, who, in a couple of weeks, are going to be packing up the car, heading off with their children\u2014or sending their children\u2014off to college and all of the things they\u2019re facing. It would be good for them, especially if they have daughters, to get a copy of <em>The College Girl\u2019s Survival Guide <\/em>and give them a copy. Maybe read through a few of them and highlight some things before you hand it off to your child.
