We\u2019ll talk about that today with our guest, Dr. Winfred Neely. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. I think for most of us, living in this culture\u2014having kids in this culture \/ grandkids in this culture\u2014it\u2019s easy for us to be troubled by the world around us and think, \u201cWhat is it that our kids are going to be facing?\u2014our grandkids are going to be facing?\u201d Worry comes pretty easily for us in these days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It does; especially, when you had a mom like I had, who passed her DNA on to me. She was a worrier,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She had the gene. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and I gave her good reason to worry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got a guest, who caused his mom\u2014[Laughter]\u2014he confessed it, right here, to a live audience on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Dr. Winfred Neely joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Welcome to the broadcast\u2014kindred spirit brother. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> We are indeed\u2014indeed; indeed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re from a big town\u2014big Chicago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m from a little bitty town in Southwest Missouri called Ozark, Missouri. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was so small you had to get a prescription to get a Coke<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> there\u20141,325 people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou caused your mom some points of worry and, ultimately, grew up to be pastor of Judson Baptist Church in Oak Park, Illinois. You gave a series of messages at your church about how to overcome worry, and you turned it into a book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You shared, earlier, about how you came home and announced to your bride, Stephne\u2014your bride now of more than 42 years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014four adult children \/ nine grandchildren\u2014you announced to her when she was\u2014how old?\u2014that you were going to take her to West Africa? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Twenty-four, I think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t receive it real well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> She did not receive that well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There is a story, though\u2014that you tell in the book\u2014how she had gone with you; and while you were there, your son, who was born there,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014contracted a disease. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes; we\u2014Sterling\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you know, malaria was common; so it was not an uncommon for missionaries in that part of the world to get malaria. I mean, it\u2019s almost like the common cold; so they have medicines you take and things like that, and you\u2019ll be okay in a few days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought Sterling had malaria, but there was something else. Stephne noticed it first that there was something going on with him. We were giving him the malaria meds, and he was not getting better. He was becoming lethargic, breathing was labored; so we took him to a pediatrician in Dakar. He started treating Sterling for typhoid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that really got to us; because we had seen a number of things happen during this season in our lives. One missionary family\u2014the husband died of a massive heart attack at 39\u2014dies in front of his child. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA year later, the same family\u2014the mother had returned to Senegal with the three children; and a year later, one of her sons was struck by a car and killed. We\u2019re going through some major existential struggles here, questioning about: \u201cYou know, just what is God doing? Why is He allowing this to happen?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother friend of mine\u2014a dear friend of mine\u2014he and his wife had a little boy, and he died at eight months. I went down\u2014I remember going down to the morgue with him to retrieve his baby boy and how we stood there in the morgue and just kind of wept together, as men and brothers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was in this context where my son is sick. I\u2019m asking myself, now, \u201cIs my little boy going to be next?\u201d We knew that God is good \/ we know that God is good; but when you are in a situation, where you cannot\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014as one preacher says: \u201cYou cannot trace God\u2019s providential hand, and you\u2019ve got to learn to trust His heart in situations like that.\u201d The fact that Sterling was sick, in combination with these big theological questions that we were raising, plus what we had seen happen to our friends\u2014deepened our anxiety. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, I know what you\u2019re talking about; because Barbara and I ended up being a part of a burial service of granddaughter, Molly, who lived seven days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> No; I\u2019m sorry to hear that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, when you go through an experience like this\u2014even though it was ten years ago\u2014it marks you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; it does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and it takes down some of your defense mechanisms, where all of a sudden, you realize, \u201cYou know, there is suffering; and everything doesn\u2019t work out exactly like you\u2019d hope it would.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> At that point, worry can become a problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> That\u2019s true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How did you attack the issue of worry in the midst of your son struggling with this disease? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Well, prayer is central to the conquests of anxiety and worry in our lives; so we prayed. Again, we had to release Sterling to the Lord. Now, we did what we were supposed to do: we gave him the appropriate meds; we made sure that we kept him hydrated; we carried out our responsibility, understanding, ultimately, only God can restore him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what we did\u2014we prayed, and we experienced the peace of God in the midst of this situation; and the Lord restored our little boy to health. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you ever think about putting him on a plane\u2014bringing him back to America at that point? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> No; that never\u2014it never occurred to us to do that. It just never occurred to us to do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said prayer is central. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Philippians 4 says prayer is central. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you\u2019re experiencing anxiety, \u201cmake your request to God\u201d\u2014is what the Bible says. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> That\u2019s what it says; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Why is prayer central; and how does it work, to bring peace to us, to pray? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Well, first of all, prayer\u2014you know, we say, \u201cPray,\u201d but prayer is a battle. I found prayer to be a battle\u2014that there is spiritual opposition to prayer; and then, when\u2014as we pray, the Lord\u2014it seems to me that God is more concerned about stretching my faith muscles than He is about making me comfortable; so I\u2019m going to have to come to God in prayer, and I\u2019m going to have to believe Him. I\u2019m going to have to literally take God at His Word\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to have to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI understand this; but the Spirit of God enables us \/ He empowers us as we cooperate with Him and we let God know what we need. Now, it doesn\u2019t mean we are informing Him\u2014He\u2019s omniscient \/ He knows all things. What He wants us to do is trust Him and talk to Him about what\u2019s troubling us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s been the biggest faith challenge to that spiritual muscle that you\u2019re talking about?\u2014where you had to take a worry\u2014maybe, it was as you were raising those four children through adolescence \/ maybe, it was a health issue with Stephne\u2014what\u2019s been the number-one issue that you had to take before God and say, \u201cGod, I don\u2019t know what You\u2019re up to, but I want to trust You with it\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> This is going to seem strange. It\u2019s my own feelings; it\u2019s my own feelings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words, because of the way that I\u2019m wired, I have a tendency to go with my feelings. My feelings are telling me one thing, and God\u2019s Word is telling me something else; so, now, I have a decision to make\u2014whether I\u2019m going to go with my feelings or whether I\u2019m going to go with Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I have gone with Scripture, Dennis, I have found\u2014whenever I trust God and take God on His Word, based on Scripture, I have found the peace of God is released in my heart and mind through the ministry of the Spirit of God. That\u2019s been my biggest challenge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInterestingly enough, I\u2019m 63 years old now; and I think it was when I was in my 50s when God started to wean me off of my feelings so that I learned to take Him at His Word. I want to suggest that that\u2019s one of the big problems in post-Modern \/ post-Christian culture\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is this feeling-driven\u2014we are too driven by feelings. We have to stop making these decisions based on how we feel; find out what God\u2019s Word says about any particular issue, and take God at His Word. Then, when we do that, we will experience peace; and that\u2019s a big challenge. That sounds easy, but it is a major spiritual breakthrough in one\u2019s life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re a teacher at Moody Bible Institute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Are you seeing this as a malady among college students today \/ university students, where they are living their lives on their feelings? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> I think so. I think younger Millennials and some Generation Z kids are more feeling oriented; yes. We have to help them learn how to take God at His Word as opposed to making major life decisions based upon how they feel. I get it\u2014we have emotions\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but the thing is\u2014it\u2019s the Word first, and I trust God\u2019s Word. Then, this Word-based Spirit\u2014this Word-informed trust\u2014then shapes my feelings and forms my emotions and not vice versa. Otherwise, we get in trouble. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s part of what happens in prayer\u2014is that, as we go to God, and we do what Philippians 4 calls us to do\u2014we make our request to Him\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014God uses His Word to correct our thinking,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to bring comfort, and to bring peace in a situation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou experienced some of this around the death of your mother, which was a troubling time for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> It was; it was a very troubling time. She moved up the street, because I was pastoring at Lawndale Community Church at the time; and we got an apartment for my mother right up the street from where Stephne and I lived at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, now, in the middle of the night, Momma is going into cardiac arrest. We\u2019re getting these calls at 3 o\u2019clock in the morning. I\u2019m jumping out of the bed and running up the street. The EMS wagon is in front of the house. So, they\u2014eventually, they put an implantable defibrillator\u2014that\u2014you know, that little thing they put in your heart to shock the heart to make sure that it can have a normal heart rhythm. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, eventually, Mother\u2019s heart gave out; her heart gave out. I was at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, completing my doctoral work. I was in a class\u2014I remember I was in a class with D.A. Carson, and I got a call. Well, I didn\u2019t get a call\u2014one of the administrators came to the class and told me: \u201cWinfred, you need to leave class now. Your mother doesn\u2019t have much time.\u201d I left Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and went to the hospital, which wasn\u2019t too far from the seminary. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMother looked at me\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014she said: \u201cWinfred, we have to turn the defibrillator off. My heart\u2019s gone. You all have to let me go.\u201d We made the decision\u2014we turned the defibrillator off. All of us are in the room at the time\u2014all of the kids are in the room; one of my sons-in-law, Shane, is in the room. They turn it off. They gave her an injection of morphine to ease her pain, which was inevitably going to come. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRachel\u2014one of my daughters\u2014starts singing a hymn. Then, Eden, another daughter, started praying; so we started praying and singing hymns. Then, the lethal erythema came up on my mother\u2019s heart monitor; she groaned; I pulled out my Bible, and I read Psalm 23. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, Mother flat-lined on the monitor, turned her head to the left, and she was gone. I remember looking down at her and thinking to myself, \u201cLord, Jesus, if I did not know for sure that You were risen, literally and bodily from among the dead, I would be devastated right now beyond recovery; but I\u2019m so thankful that You\u2019re alive and that my mother is with You.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe nurse was standing next to me and said, \u201cI have never seen anything like this in my entire life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, the Spirit of God visited us. We kind of welcomed\u2014we were kind of the sending ceremonial of the team, of sorts, to Momma as she\u2019s being ushered into glory and received on the other side. Even this person, who didn\u2019t know Christ, knew that something extraordinary happened; so the Lord gave me great peace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I must admit I was not able to watch a death scene on television for about a year after my mother\u2019s passing\u2014I just couldn\u2019t do it\u2014but the Lord gave me grace, and help, and strength. Somebody asked me, a couple of years ago, \u201cDo you ever get over the death of your mother?\u201d I said: \u201cNo; but it gets better. God is good; and He gives us grace, and help, and strength.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes; I thank God for her\u2014I really, really do; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think of a man, like you, who has now taught at Moody Bible Institute for\u2014how many years? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Seventeen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Seventeen years\u2014trained a lot of students. You\u2019ve also been a vocational pastor at the same time; raised your family there in Chicago\u2014four kids all the way through the teenage years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014to ultimately become parents of nine grandchildren. I\u2019m just sitting here, going, \u201cI\u2019d really like to know how Winfred would answer my favorite question.\u201d Now, you don\u2019t know what my favorite question is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> I don\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but you\u2019re about to find out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to find out what your answer is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Alright. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What would you say is the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in all your life? To give you a little time to think about the answer, courage is not the absence of fear; it is doing your duty in the face of fear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, out of everything you\u2019ve done in your life\u2014going to Senegal, West Africa, stepping out in marriage; coming back, giving leadership of a church; teaching at Moody; being a husband; being a daddy\u2014out of everything you\u2019ve done, what\u2019s been the most courageous thing Winfred Neely has ever done? If our listeners are wondering, his forehead is furled. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> I think jumping in, ten-feet deep, to total commitment, as much as humanly possible, to my wife. That may seem strange, but she told me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we were dating at the time\u2014she said, \u201cYou know, you\u2019re not letting me into your heart,\u201d because I was afraid of being hurt. I was reminded of that, actually, today\u2014as I was walking, here, into FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I was looking around your wonderful facility here; and I saw a chair that said, \u201cI still do.\u201d That reminded me of that commitment that I have made to my wife, as a man, to let her in and be the wife in my life that God wants her to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was\u2014that took courage for me to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was a risk\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014because to be known is to be vulnerable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes; yes. She has been a good steward of it\u2014I must say. I\u2019ve got an incredible wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She hasn\u2019t used it against you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> No, she hasn\u2019t; but Stephne is\u2014my wife is a godly woman; but she\u2019s one of those strong women. I didn\u2019t marry a wimp. One of my colleagues at Moody Bible Institute, Dr. Rosalie de Rosset, met my wife once. She just met her, and then she started laughing; she started laughing\u2014she says, \u201cOh, Winfred, you met your match in this woman.\u201d [Laughter] She hadn\u2019t known her for one minute and she says, \u201cOh, Winfred!\u201d I\u2019m at Moody\u2014I\u2019m Dr. Winfred Neely at Moody Bible Institute. Stephne stepped off that elevator; and she said, \u201cOh, Winfred!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was just the woman that I needed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have a feeling that you have just given some young men \/ maybe some older men the courage to jump. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Marriage represents a <em>huge<\/em> risk if you make the ultimate commitment, which is \u201c\u2026until death do us part.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You say \u201cthe courage to jump\u201d\u2014you\u2019re talking about commitment and transparency\u2014being open? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019m not talking just about getting married; I\u2019m talking about those already married, who haven\u2019t jumped\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014who haven\u2019t let their wives into the interior of their lives and let them see you as you are\u2014which is a fallible man, which she already knows, for goodness\u2019 sakes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but let her in on your insecurities\/your fears. She <em>longs<\/em> to be a partner in life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Could be you need to overcome some worry to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes, anxiety about that commitment; yes. The Bible says, \u201cBe anxious for nothing.\u201d That includes my anxiety about committing to a person that I need to commit\u2014the woman that I need to commit myself to. You gave a series of messages at your church about how to overcome worry, and you turned it into a book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You shared, earlier, about how you came home and announced to your bride, Stephne\u2014your bride now of more than 42 years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014four adult children \/ nine grandchildren\u2014you announced to her when she was\u2014how old?\u2014that you were going to take her to West Africa? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Twenty-four, I think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t receive it real well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> She did not receive that well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There is a story, though\u2014that you tell in the book\u2014how she had gone with you; and while you were there, your son, who was born there,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014contracted a disease. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes; we\u2014Sterling\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you know, malaria was common; so it was not an uncommon for missionaries in that part of the world to get malaria. I mean, it\u2019s almost like the common cold; so they have medicines you take and things like that, and you\u2019ll be okay in a few days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought Sterling had malaria, but there was something else. Stephne noticed it first that there was something going on with him. We were giving him the malaria meds, and he was not getting better. He was becoming lethargic, breathing was labored; so we took him to a pediatrician in Dakar. He started treating Sterling for typhoid. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that really got to us; because we had seen a number of things happen during this season in our lives. One missionary family\u2014the husband died of a massive heart attack at 39\u2014dies in front of his child. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA year later, the same family\u2014the mother had returned to Senegal with the three children; and a year later, one of her sons was struck by a car and killed. We\u2019re going through some major existential struggles here, questioning about: \u201cYou know, just what is God doing? Why is He allowing this to happen?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother friend of mine\u2014a dear friend of mine\u2014he and his wife had a little boy, and he died at eight months. I went down\u2014I remember going down to the morgue with him to retrieve his baby boy and how we stood there in the morgue and just kind of wept together, as men and brothers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was in this context where my son is sick. I\u2019m asking myself, now, \u201cIs my little boy going to be next?\u201d We knew that God is good \/ we know that God is good; but when you are in a situation, where you cannot\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014as one preacher says: \u201cYou cannot trace God\u2019s providential hand, and you\u2019ve got to learn to trust His heart in situations like that.\u201d The fact that Sterling was sick, in combination with these big theological questions that we were raising, plus what we had seen happen to our friends\u2014deepened our anxiety. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, I know what you\u2019re talking about; because Barbara and I ended up being a part of a burial service of granddaughter, Molly, who lived seven days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> No; I\u2019m sorry to hear that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, when you go through an experience like this\u2014even though it was ten years ago\u2014it marks you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; it does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and it takes down some of your defense mechanisms, where all of a sudden, you realize, \u201cYou know, there is suffering; and everything doesn\u2019t work out exactly like you\u2019d hope it would.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> At that point, worry can become a problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> That\u2019s true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How did you attack the issue of worry in the midst of your son struggling with this disease? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Well, prayer is central to the conquests of anxiety and worry in our lives; so we prayed. Again, we had to release Sterling to the Lord. Now, we did what we were supposed to do: we gave him the appropriate meds; we made sure that we kept him hydrated; we carried out our responsibility, understanding, ultimately, only God can restore him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what we did\u2014we prayed, and we experienced the peace of God in the midst of this situation; and the Lord restored our little boy to health. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you ever think about putting him on a plane\u2014bringing him back to America at that point? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> No; that never\u2014it never occurred to us to do that. It just never occurred to us to do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said prayer is central. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Philippians 4 says prayer is central. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you\u2019re experiencing anxiety, \u201cmake your request to God\u201d\u2014is what the Bible says. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> That\u2019s what it says; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Why is prayer central; and how does it work, to bring peace to us, to pray? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Well, first of all, prayer\u2014you know, we say, \u201cPray,\u201d but prayer is a battle. I found prayer to be a battle\u2014that there is spiritual opposition to prayer; and then, when\u2014as we pray, the Lord\u2014it seems to me that God is more concerned about stretching my faith muscles than He is about making me comfortable; so I\u2019m going to have to come to God in prayer, and I\u2019m going to have to believe Him. I\u2019m going to have to literally take God at His Word\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to have to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI understand this; but the Spirit of God enables us \/ He empowers us as we cooperate with Him and we let God know what we need. Now, it doesn\u2019t mean we are informing Him\u2014He\u2019s omniscient \/ He knows all things. What He wants us to do is trust Him and talk to Him about what\u2019s troubling us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s been the biggest faith challenge to that spiritual muscle that you\u2019re talking about?\u2014where you had to take a worry\u2014maybe, it was as you were raising those four children through adolescence \/ maybe, it was a health issue with Stephne\u2014what\u2019s been the number-one issue that you had to take before God and say, \u201cGod, I don\u2019t know what You\u2019re up to, but I want to trust You with it\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> This is going to seem strange. It\u2019s my own feelings; it\u2019s my own feelings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words, because of the way that I\u2019m wired, I have a tendency to go with my feelings. My feelings are telling me one thing, and God\u2019s Word is telling me something else; so, now, I have a decision to make\u2014whether I\u2019m going to go with my feelings or whether I\u2019m going to go with Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I have gone with Scripture, Dennis, I have found\u2014whenever I trust God and take God on His Word, based on Scripture, I have found the peace of God is released in my heart and mind through the ministry of the Spirit of God. That\u2019s been my biggest challenge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInterestingly enough, I\u2019m 63 years old now; and I think it was when I was in my 50s when God started to wean me off of my feelings so that I learned to take Him at His Word. I want to suggest that that\u2019s one of the big problems in post-Modern \/ post-Christian culture\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is this feeling-driven\u2014we are too driven by feelings. We have to stop making these decisions based on how we feel; find out what God\u2019s Word says about any particular issue, and take God at His Word. Then, when we do that, we will experience peace; and that\u2019s a big challenge. That sounds easy, but it is a major spiritual breakthrough in one\u2019s life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re a teacher at Moody Bible Institute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Are you seeing this as a malady among college students today \/ university students, where they are living their lives on their feelings? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> I think so. I think younger Millennials and some Generation Z kids are more feeling oriented; yes. We have to help them learn how to take God at His Word as opposed to making major life decisions based upon how they feel. I get it\u2014we have emotions\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but the thing is\u2014it\u2019s the Word first, and I trust God\u2019s Word. Then, this Word-based Spirit\u2014this Word-informed trust\u2014then shapes my feelings and forms my emotions and not vice versa. Otherwise, we get in trouble. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s part of what happens in prayer\u2014is that, as we go to God, and we do what Philippians 4 calls us to do\u2014we make our request to Him\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014God uses His Word to correct our thinking,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to bring comfort, and to bring peace in a situation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou experienced some of this around the death of your mother, which was a troubling time for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> It was; it was a very troubling time. She moved up the street, because I was pastoring at Lawndale Community Church at the time; and we got an apartment for my mother right up the street from where Stephne and I lived at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, now, in the middle of the night, Momma is going into cardiac arrest. We\u2019re getting these calls at 3 o\u2019clock in the morning. I\u2019m jumping out of the bed and running up the street. The EMS wagon is in front of the house. So, they\u2014eventually, they put an implantable defibrillator\u2014that\u2014you know, that little thing they put in your heart to shock the heart to make sure that it can have a normal heart rhythm. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, eventually, Mother\u2019s heart gave out; her heart gave out. I was at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, completing my doctoral work. I was in a class\u2014I remember I was in a class with D.A. Carson, and I got a call. Well, I didn\u2019t get a call\u2014one of the administrators came to the class and told me: \u201cWinfred, you need to leave class now. Your mother doesn\u2019t have much time.\u201d I left Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and went to the hospital, which wasn\u2019t too far from the seminary. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMother looked at me\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014she said: \u201cWinfred, we have to turn the defibrillator off. My heart\u2019s gone. You all have to let me go.\u201d We made the decision\u2014we turned the defibrillator off. All of us are in the room at the time\u2014all of the kids are in the room; one of my sons-in-law, Shane, is in the room. They turn it off. They gave her an injection of morphine to ease her pain, which was inevitably going to come. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRachel\u2014one of my daughters\u2014starts singing a hymn. Then, Eden, another daughter, started praying; so we started praying and singing hymns. Then, the lethal erythema came up on my mother\u2019s heart monitor; she groaned; I pulled out my Bible, and I read Psalm 23. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, Mother flat-lined on the monitor, turned her head to the left, and she was gone. I remember looking down at her and thinking to myself, \u201cLord, Jesus, if I did not know for sure that You were risen, literally and bodily from among the dead, I would be devastated right now beyond recovery; but I\u2019m so thankful that You\u2019re alive and that my mother is with You.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe nurse was standing next to me and said, \u201cI have never seen anything like this in my entire life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, the Spirit of God visited us. We kind of welcomed\u2014we were kind of the sending ceremonial of the team, of sorts, to Momma as she\u2019s being ushered into glory and received on the other side. Even this person, who didn\u2019t know Christ, knew that something extraordinary happened; so the Lord gave me great peace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I must admit I was not able to watch a death scene on television for about a year after my mother\u2019s passing\u2014I just couldn\u2019t do it\u2014but the Lord gave me grace, and help, and strength. Somebody asked me, a couple of years ago, \u201cDo you ever get over the death of your mother?\u201d I said: \u201cNo; but it gets better. God is good; and He gives us grace, and help, and strength.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes; I thank God for her\u2014I really, really do; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think of a man, like you, who has now taught at Moody Bible Institute for\u2014how many years? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Seventeen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Seventeen years\u2014trained a lot of students. You\u2019ve also been a vocational pastor at the same time; raised your family there in Chicago\u2014four kids all the way through the teenage years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014to ultimately become parents of nine grandchildren. I\u2019m just sitting here, going, \u201cI\u2019d really like to know how Winfred would answer my favorite question.\u201d Now, you don\u2019t know what my favorite question is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> I don\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but you\u2019re about to find out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to find out what your answer is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Alright. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What would you say is the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in all your life? To give you a little time to think about the answer, courage is not the absence of fear; it is doing your duty in the face of fear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, out of everything you\u2019ve done in your life\u2014going to Senegal, West Africa, stepping out in marriage; coming back, giving leadership of a church; teaching at Moody; being a husband; being a daddy\u2014out of everything you\u2019ve done, what\u2019s been the most courageous thing Winfred Neely has ever done? If our listeners are wondering, his forehead is furled. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> I think jumping in, ten-feet deep, to total commitment, as much as humanly possible, to my wife. That may seem strange, but she told me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we were dating at the time\u2014she said, \u201cYou know, you\u2019re not letting me into your heart,\u201d because I was afraid of being hurt. I was reminded of that, actually, today\u2014as I was walking, here, into FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I was looking around your wonderful facility here; and I saw a chair that said, \u201cI still do.\u201d That reminded me of that commitment that I have made to my wife, as a man, to let her in and be the wife in my life that God wants her to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was\u2014that took courage for me to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was a risk\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014because to be known is to be vulnerable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes; yes. She has been a good steward of it\u2014I must say. I\u2019ve got an incredible wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She hasn\u2019t used it against you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> No, she hasn\u2019t; but Stephne is\u2014my wife is a godly woman; but she\u2019s one of those strong women. I didn\u2019t marry a wimp. One of my colleagues at Moody Bible Institute, Dr. Rosalie de Rosset, met my wife once. She just met her, and then she started laughing; she started laughing\u2014she says, \u201cOh, Winfred, you met your match in this woman.\u201d [Laughter] She hadn\u2019t known her for one minute and she says, \u201cOh, Winfred!\u201d I\u2019m at Moody\u2014I\u2019m Dr. Winfred Neely at Moody Bible Institute. Stephne stepped off that elevator; and she said, \u201cOh, Winfred!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was just the woman that I needed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have a feeling that you have just given some young men \/ maybe some older men the courage to jump. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Marriage represents a <em>huge<\/em> risk if you make the ultimate commitment, which is \u201c\u2026until death do us part.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You say \u201cthe courage to jump\u201d\u2014you\u2019re talking about commitment and transparency\u2014being open? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019m not talking just about getting married; I\u2019m talking about those already married, who haven\u2019t jumped\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014who haven\u2019t let their wives into the interior of their lives and let them see you as you are\u2014which is a fallible man, which she already knows, for goodness\u2019 sakes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but let her in on your insecurities\/your fears. She <em>longs<\/em> to be a partner in life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Could be you need to overcome some worry to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Winfred:<\/strong> Yes, anxiety about that commitment; yes. The Bible says, \u201cBe anxious for nothing.\u201d That includes my anxiety about committing to a person that I need to commit\u2014the woman that I need to commit myself to.
