Pastor Ronnie Floyd says there are a lot of other kinds of fitness we need to pursue; and when it comes to physical fitness, we need to be careful\u2014make sure it\u2019s not too little or too much of a priority for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019ve been with folks that have gone overboard and all of that. But I think what I would say to them is: \u201cBalance it out.\u201d You know, again, what you\u2019re adding is not days to your years. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There\u2019s a lot to this book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me just introduce our guest. Everybody thinks about diets; well, Ronnie Floyd wants you to go on more than just a diet for food. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ronnie, welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s good to have you back here in the studio.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> It\u2019s a privilege. Thank you very much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ronnie is the senior pastor of Cross Church in Northwest Arkansas. He is the husband of Gina for more than 40 years\u2014has two sons and seven grandkids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve written a book, as Bob said here\u2014<em>Living Fit<\/em>. He just assumed it was about dieting! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And there\u2019s a reason why. You\u2019ve been\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m not saying that, Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Could that have been the Holy Spirit?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know! I don\u2019t know. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut your book is about more than just physical well-being. You talk about five gauges. I think this is worth the price of the book here\u2014just to have someone, who comes alongside you and says: \u201cYou know what? If you\u2019d like to kind of measure your life, I\u2019ve got five gauges on the dashboard that you need to be paying attention to.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo what are the five gauges; and what do they represent in our lives, Ronnie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, <em>Living Fit <\/em>is a call to, first of all, living fit spiritually, and the importance of how <em>everything<\/em>, really, is always coming back to those matters. It\u2019s also about living fit, physically, whether we like to talk about that or we don\u2019t like to talk about that\u2014we cannot imagine being fit like something we read in a magazine. We need to think about, you know, the temple we have\u2014God has given us. He lives in it, according to the Scripture; and to the best of our ability, we need to make it livable to His honor and to His glory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, living fit, relationally. I mean, that\u2019s what you men have given your lives to\u2014to building families \/ the relationships\u2014and what all of that means: \u201cWhat is love? What does it mean to be selfless?\u201d\u2014all of those matters. And then this whole element of living fit, financially\u2014which the number one cause for issues in families comes back, again and again, to the financial crisis in so many families; so living fit, financially. And then, of course, living fit, emotionally\u2014there\u2019s just a lot to that\u2014and the emotional end, oftentimes, really gets the less of what we are. We get wrung out or, some say, burn out\u2014whatever language you want to use\u2014those only come because you haven\u2019t done a lot of the other real well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing that I kept on thinking, as I was writing this book, is that, when you get in a vehicle, you see all of these gauges. How many times do you get in your vehicle, and you don\u2019t even look at the gauges? That\u2019s what happens in life a lot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> We get busy or\u2014like it was last night\u2014I went to a gathering. I wasn\u2019t paying attention; by the time I got home, we needed fuel in our vehicle that we drove here today to be with you! [Laughter] So the first stop we made had to be there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> It had to alert me; but if that happens to you, personally\u2014that can be very detrimental and even deadly to your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The thing is\u2014our dashboards often have these lights that come on\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014when we\u2019re low on fuel or when we need to check the engine; but our lives don\u2019t necessarily have the \u201cCheck Engine\u201d light that comes on. How can we do a healthy assessment of these five areas and know, \u201cAm I doing okay in each of these five areas?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; in fact, take the first one\u2014spiritually. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What would be the equivalent of a red light on the dashboard, going: \u201cYou\u2019ve got to change the oil here. You\u2019ve got a problem that\u2019s brewing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Perhaps you don\u2019t feel like you have purpose. Perhaps you\u2019ve lost your identity. You\u2019ve lost your, you know, your footing in your own life. Maybe you\u2019ve stopped dreaming. You know, we don\u2019t ever need to stop dreaming about what God might want to use us to do in whatever stage we\u2019re in in life. Perhaps you look at your life, and you\u2019ve been so busy that you haven\u2019t even spent any time with God, which is so true of so many people that profess Christianity. Those are just some of those indicators, and there are many others.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You actually had an indicator that showed up in a relationship you had with your brother, who asked you to build a barn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s a good illustration in this of a lot of people\u2019s lives. [Laughter] Tell them about your brother. Your brother was actually trying to rescue you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes; he was just trying to help a college student. You know, he was older than I was; and he needed somebody to build a barn\u2014just a pretty simple barn. I said, you know, \u201cHey! I\u2019ll build a barn.\u201d He said, \u201cWell, good luck!\u201d [Laughter] They kind of came around in a little bit; and the bottom line is\u2014I did the best I could, but I have <em>no<\/em> ability to do that\u2014so, if anybody wants me to build anything: \u201c<em>No!<\/em> I don\u2019t do that.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe whole point is\u2014I built the barn \/ did the best I could, but I didn\u2019t\u2014I wasn\u2019t checking things. I didn\u2019t even know what to check! [Laughter] Well, after that\u2014I\u2019m sure that barn is no longer in existence \/ it\u2019s not going to be existent\u2014[Laughter]\u2014because I didn\u2019t know what I was doing, initially. I really think we have to come to the point of being able to know who we are \/ know what we\u2019re gifted to do\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and realize there are some things we\u2019re good at and there are some things we\u2019re not good at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> I\u2019m not a good barn-builder! I can help you build your life a lot more than I can help you build barns.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are a lot of people who have got a spiritual checklist when it comes to their spiritual fitness: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI go to church: Check!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI try to have a Quiet Time: Check!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey have got their disciplines in place; but if they look at their life, they would say, \u201cIt still feels like there\u2019s a dryness, spiritually, going on.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What\u2019s the difference between checklist Christianity and relationship\u2014a real, vibrant, healthy, spiritually-fit Christianity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> I think it comes back to this whole element of purpose. I think it\u2019s very, very important that we <em>always<\/em> know what God wants us to do as far as seeking that purpose\u2014that the purpose of my life is not simply to go and have a wonderful year, financially. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not lowering that on the pole; but it\u2019s <em>not <\/em>going to make you happy, ultimately, any more than chasing after some fantasy you might have for something in your life. We have to come back to: \u201cWhy has God made me? What is my purpose at this moment, at my age and stage, vocation and location? What is it that God wants me to do?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and this is where what comes to mind for me is Ephesians 2:10, which says, \u201cWe are His workmanship\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014 \u201ccreated in Christ Jesus for good works, which He prepared beforehand, that we would walk in them.\u201d You\u2019re saying that to be spiritually fit, you have to be saying: \u201cWhat are the good works that Christ has created me to walk in?\u201d and \u201cHow can I be walking in those footsteps that He planned out for me?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Absolutely! And one of the things that I think is so pivotal is something that God built in my life many years ago, of what some would regard as the \u201cPrayer of Jabez.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRegardless of who prayed it, it\u2019s in God\u2019s Word in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10. That prayer is so <em>powerful<\/em>, because it calls us to live a life that <em>dreams<\/em> and gives God the chance to inject the power of dreaming what He might want to do in our lives. That\u2019s what people need today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If somebody doesn\u2019t know that prayer\u2014and it\u2019s hard to imagine that anybody doesn\u2019t\u2014because there was a best-selling book, about a decade or more ago, about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But what is that prayer that helps give vision to people?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s a great question. It comes out of 1 Chronicles 4: 9-10\u2014it says, \u201cJabez was more honored than his brothers. His mother named him Jabez and said, \u2018I gave birth to him in pain.\u2019\u201d And here\u2019s the key\u2014verse 10\u2014it says this: \u201cJabez called out to the God of Israel, \u2018If only You would bless me! Extend my border. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c\u2018Let Your hand be with me, and keep me from harm, so that I will not experience pain.\u2019 And God answered his request,\u201d\u2014his prayer. To me, one of the real keys to that is what the first sentence says and the last: \u201cHe called out to God\u201d and \u201cGod answered his prayer.\u201d Wow! I\u2019d better find out what\u2019s between those two!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Imagine that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, you have a verse that sounds like it\u2014if it\u2019s not a life verse for you, it is an important one\u2014Acts 13:36, which says, \u201cAfter David had served the purposes of God in his generation, he slept.\u201d That doesn\u2019t mean he took a nap\u2014he died.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How do you <em>know<\/em> what God\u2019s purposes are in your generation? You\u2019re speaking, right now, Ronnie\u2014and you know this, as a pastor\u2014you\u2019re speaking to young people, all the way to older folks. How can they know what God\u2019s purposes are, and how can they be a part of them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Stop thinking about it way out there; think about it here and now: \u201cHow does God want to use me <em>now<\/em>? What is my ultimate purpose in life?\u201d It should be to bring glory to God. It should be to make myself available to Him and, whatever He wants me to do, I\u2019m willing to do\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014wherever it is, whenever it is, and whomever it\u2019s with. I think, if we start with those basics, then let God fill in the blanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me ask you about the gauge that I went to first when I saw the <em>Living Fit<\/em> book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re going to ask this question; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s because one of my life verses is 1 Timothy 4:8, which says, \u201cBodily exercise profiteth little,\u201d\u2014I\u2019ve kind of held onto that as a verse that I: \u201cThis is the Word of God, and I\u2019ll just claim that for my life.\u201d [Laughter] No! But I would say that, during the time I was raising my kids, this whole idea of physical fitness was something I kept at kind of a baseline level. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI stayed healthy enough; I wasn\u2019t missing work\u2014you know, I was able to function \/ getting enough sleep\u2014but I wasn\u2019t paying a whole lot of attention to my physical fitness; honestly, because the spiritual gauge, and the relational gauge, and the emotional gauge\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014all of the rest! I was having to concentrate on those. How do we keep these\u2014all of these gauges?\u2014but this fitness gauge\u2014from being too important or being too unimportant in our lives?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, the verse you quoted is an excellent verse to quote there; because it does say that \u201cbodily exercise profiteth little,\u201d but that means it profits <em>some<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Some; right! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been schooled by the pastor, right here!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think you just got lanced!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think I did! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> So, with that, I believe that the heart of that needs to be that: \u201cYes; I cannot control the <em>quantity<\/em> of my days\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cbut physical fitness can help me control the <em>quality<\/em> of the days that God has given me on this earth.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re a very busy man\u2014a lot of travel. How do you keep this a part of your calibration of your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> There are two commitments I have, very strongly, every day. You asked, so I\u2019m going to tell you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And by the way, I read these\u2014and I just have to tell you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014a little conviction for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes; oh yes! I\u2019ve got a bad knee from running. [Laughter] It is like, \u201cI don\u2019t know whether I\u2019m going to be able to do what he does!\u201d [Laughter] But go ahead and share with our listeners\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, you know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because it involves the spiritual and also the physical.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; absolutely! And you know what? People ask me, all of the time: \u201cHow do you do what you do? What do you\u2026?\u201d You know, because they see my schedule; or they see me here, doing this\u2026this. Well, all I know is that it comes back to the discipline that God drives in your life and puts in your life. I\u2019m not saying He wants to do this with <em>everybody<\/em>; but with me, I can tell you that there are two\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014really, I want to say there are three things that I have been committed to that I think God has honored. One, above all \/ above everything\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014is I have started my day with God, all the way back to, probably, my senior year in high school\u2014never to miss those moments; and they\u2019ve grown, and grown, and grown. Yes; in quantity, but also in quality. I\u2019m committed to it, regardless of how I feel, or where I am, or what time zone I\u2019m in\u2014that\u2019s discipline number one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber two is that I really have tried to exercise about five or six days a week, and I\u2019ve done it for a <em>long<\/em> time. For me, it\u2019s running\u2014conditioning some for strength matters\u2014but it\u2019s the matter of the cleansing of the body and the cleansing of the mind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve found it to be good for me. I listen to podcasts\u2014I let it be a spiritual time of pouring into <em>me<\/em>. As a pastor of a local church, with a lot of challenges and pressures of life, like everybody else, I\u2019ve found that to be <em>good<\/em> for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the third thing that I\u2019ve been very committed to, really quite honestly, since about 1985\u2014it would be <em>rare<\/em> that we violate this\u2014every Friday, I spend that day with my wife\u2014it\u2019s our Sabbath; it\u2019s our coming back\u2014because, on Sundays, I preach twice\/three\/four [times]\u2014I mean, I\u2019ve done all kinds of things. Sometimes, I have to get on a plane in the middle of the afternoon to go somewhere else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> So, you know, I find, when I put my priorities on some of those main things, God just seems to reward the whole energy factor of life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There was a physical wake-up call in your marriage, back in 1990, with your wife, that really helped calibrate the physical in a fresh way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Share with our listeners what happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, Gina was diagnosed with cancer at a very young age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You had a couple of young sons; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes; very young. One, I think, was seven or eight, and the other was five. It was a desperate time\u2014the initial prognosis was not overall encouraging. We needed God. You know, we just really began to get the best medical care in the world\u2014we believed and felt and did whatever it took to get that\u2014but also, called out to God in prayer and fasting one day a week for that entire year, just petitioning Him and asking Him for a miracle. That was a wake-up call for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, Gina\u2019s still alive. She\u2019s awesome; she did great. In fact, you know, she\u2019ll be at a spin class or some kind of class four days a week at the gym before the sun ever comes up. So the point is that\u2014you know, there\u2019s a constant pull. You know, these bodies we have\u2014they\u2019re not here forever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> You say, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t want to give way too much time,\u201d\u2014I would agree! I don\u2019t want to give too much time to it, but you have to make it where <em>you<\/em> are. The whole thing about living fit, physically, is simply to get yourself in a position where you can, at least, <em>do<\/em> some things that God wants you to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know some people who are\u2014diet and exercise have become idols in their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Absolutely; it\u2019s horrible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know other people, where diet and exercise have been disregarded. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Talk to both groups. What would you say to the folks who have gone overboard with diet and exercise?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019ve been with folks that have gone overboard in all that. I\u2019m not so sure, at one time, I wasn\u2019t there myself a little bit. But I think what I would say to them is: \u201cBalance it out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGet real.\u201d You know, again, what you\u2019re adding is not days to your years. The Scriptures say that your days are numbered\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014but you\u2019re adding <em>quality<\/em> to your life, and there\u2019s only so much you can do. Don\u2019t give <em>all <\/em>of yourself to that. If it\u2019s that important to you, make sure you do it every day; but you don\u2019t die for it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> The second group is a lot easier to talk to. Those, who are followers of Christ\u2014at times, you know, we almost have this other checklist of things we can\u2019t do; okay? \u201cWe can\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201c\u2026can\u2019t dance,\u201d \u201c\u2026can\u2019t play cards.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014\u201c\u2026can\u2019t dance,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s right! The whole \u201cBig Five,\u201d you know\u2014or whatever it was. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> And \u201cYou can\u2019t chew and go with girls that do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Or whatever the old statement was. [Laughter] But, you know\u2014so Christians would think, for years: \u201cI can\u2019t do this,\u201d \/ \u201cI can\u2019t do this.\u201d And pastors are\u2014God knows\u2014pastors are real bad about this. \u201cWell, bless God, I can\u2019t eat; because, boy, people like to eat, and I like to eat.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I like to eat too!\u2014no doubt about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happens is\u2014we justify our schedules. We rationalize: \u201cWe can\u2019t do this to take care of ourselves more because we\u2019ve got to do this.\u201d Well, the bottom line is\u2014this is a hard thing to say, because I struggle with this: \u201cWe become what we eat.\u201d Oftentimes, there are just some simple practices there that we need to reign in\u2014I\u2019m not talking about radically\u2014but reign in\u2014moderation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s one thing that I\u2019ve found, Dennis, personally\u2014is the value of seasons of prayer and fasting, at times; because it calls me to reign in the will of my flesh\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014your appetites; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014that can absolutely just go crazy; you know? And everybody needs moderation in those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt about it. I was thinking, as you were talking about that, there was a time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and this is past tense\u2014don\u2019t look at me, Bob, with a smirk on your face. [Laughter] You don\u2019t know what I\u2019m about to say! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s funny. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know me really\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014we\u2019ve worked together for twenty-five years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He\u2019s about to talk about ice cream. [Laughter] Aren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; exactly! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly where you were going; I\u2019ll go with you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Truth right there! But I used to think that being an American and a follower of Christ meant you could have ice cream, every night after dinner, with chocolate syrup!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You thought there was a verse in the Bible that required it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I did! And I just realized I couldn\u2019t do that; you know?\u2014it wasn\u2019t a lightning bolt, but I now rarely\u2014Barbara and I are eating the healthiest we\u2019ve ever eaten in our lives, and I attest to what you\u2019re saying\u2014it\u2019s really, really good. In fact, Ronnie\u2014you know, you and I had lunch recently; and we offered you a salad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So we\u2019re trying to think smart in here as well. That\u2019s what I like about your book\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014your book, <em>Living Fit, <\/em>is a <em>great<\/em> exhortation around five gauges. These first two we talked about today\u2014we\u2019ll talk about the other three later\u2014but the first two: spiritually and physically\u2014boy, there couldn\u2019t be two better ones to start with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to thank you for writing that book; but I also want to thank you for the last one that we\u2019ll talk about later, which is emotionally. I think it\u2019s kind of\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014it\u2019s something the Christian community doesn\u2019t seem to want to talk about with any degree of honesty. I think it\u2019s an important subject, and I\u2019m glad you broach the subject.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it would be good for a husband and wife to sit down and look at these five areas and just say, \u201cOkay; on a scale of 1-5, how are we doing spiritually, physically, relationally, financially, [and emotionally]?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Are you going to do that with Mary Ann?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No! This is good for our listeners to do. I\u2019m not saying I should be doing this. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, by the way, Ronnie, I just want to compliment you. Everybody thinks about diets; well, Ronnie Floyd wants you to go on more than just a diet for food. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ronnie, welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s good to have you back here in the studio.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> It\u2019s a privilege. Thank you very much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ronnie is the senior pastor of Cross Church in Northwest Arkansas. He is the husband of Gina for more than 40 years\u2014has two sons and seven grandkids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve written a book, as Bob said here\u2014<em>Living Fit<\/em>. He just assumed it was about dieting! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And there\u2019s a reason why. You\u2019ve been\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m not saying that, Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Could that have been the Holy Spirit?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know! I don\u2019t know. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut your book is about more than just physical well-being. You talk about five gauges. I think this is worth the price of the book here\u2014just to have someone, who comes alongside you and says: \u201cYou know what? If you\u2019d like to kind of measure your life, I\u2019ve got five gauges on the dashboard that you need to be paying attention to.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo what are the five gauges; and what do they represent in our lives, Ronnie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, <em>Living Fit <\/em>is a call to, first of all, living fit spiritually, and the importance of how <em>everything<\/em>, really, is always coming back to those matters. It\u2019s also about living fit, physically, whether we like to talk about that or we don\u2019t like to talk about that\u2014we cannot imagine being fit like something we read in a magazine. We need to think about, you know, the temple we have\u2014God has given us. He lives in it, according to the Scripture; and to the best of our ability, we need to make it livable to His honor and to His glory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, living fit, relationally. I mean, that\u2019s what you men have given your lives to\u2014to building families \/ the relationships\u2014and what all of that means: \u201cWhat is love? What does it mean to be selfless?\u201d\u2014all of those matters. And then this whole element of living fit, financially\u2014which the number one cause for issues in families comes back, again and again, to the financial crisis in so many families; so living fit, financially. And then, of course, living fit, emotionally\u2014there\u2019s just a lot to that\u2014and the emotional end, oftentimes, really gets the less of what we are. We get wrung out or, some say, burn out\u2014whatever language you want to use\u2014those only come because you haven\u2019t done a lot of the other real well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing that I kept on thinking, as I was writing this book, is that, when you get in a vehicle, you see all of these gauges. How many times do you get in your vehicle, and you don\u2019t even look at the gauges? That\u2019s what happens in life a lot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> We get busy or\u2014like it was last night\u2014I went to a gathering. I wasn\u2019t paying attention; by the time I got home, we needed fuel in our vehicle that we drove here today to be with you! [Laughter] So the first stop we made had to be there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> It had to alert me; but if that happens to you, personally\u2014that can be very detrimental and even deadly to your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The thing is\u2014our dashboards often have these lights that come on\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014when we\u2019re low on fuel or when we need to check the engine; but our lives don\u2019t necessarily have the \u201cCheck Engine\u201d light that comes on. How can we do a healthy assessment of these five areas and know, \u201cAm I doing okay in each of these five areas?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; in fact, take the first one\u2014spiritually. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What would be the equivalent of a red light on the dashboard, going: \u201cYou\u2019ve got to change the oil here. You\u2019ve got a problem that\u2019s brewing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Perhaps you don\u2019t feel like you have purpose. Perhaps you\u2019ve lost your identity. You\u2019ve lost your, you know, your footing in your own life. Maybe you\u2019ve stopped dreaming. You know, we don\u2019t ever need to stop dreaming about what God might want to use us to do in whatever stage we\u2019re in in life. Perhaps you look at your life, and you\u2019ve been so busy that you haven\u2019t even spent any time with God, which is so true of so many people that profess Christianity. Those are just some of those indicators, and there are many others.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You actually had an indicator that showed up in a relationship you had with your brother, who asked you to build a barn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s a good illustration in this of a lot of people\u2019s lives. [Laughter] Tell them about your brother. Your brother was actually trying to rescue you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes; he was just trying to help a college student. You know, he was older than I was; and he needed somebody to build a barn\u2014just a pretty simple barn. I said, you know, \u201cHey! I\u2019ll build a barn.\u201d He said, \u201cWell, good luck!\u201d [Laughter] They kind of came around in a little bit; and the bottom line is\u2014I did the best I could, but I have <em>no<\/em> ability to do that\u2014so, if anybody wants me to build anything: \u201c<em>No!<\/em> I don\u2019t do that.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe whole point is\u2014I built the barn \/ did the best I could, but I didn\u2019t\u2014I wasn\u2019t checking things. I didn\u2019t even know what to check! [Laughter] Well, after that\u2014I\u2019m sure that barn is no longer in existence \/ it\u2019s not going to be existent\u2014[Laughter]\u2014because I didn\u2019t know what I was doing, initially. I really think we have to come to the point of being able to know who we are \/ know what we\u2019re gifted to do\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and realize there are some things we\u2019re good at and there are some things we\u2019re not good at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> I\u2019m not a good barn-builder! I can help you build your life a lot more than I can help you build barns.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are a lot of people who have got a spiritual checklist when it comes to their spiritual fitness: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI go to church: Check!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI try to have a Quiet Time: Check!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey have got their disciplines in place; but if they look at their life, they would say, \u201cIt still feels like there\u2019s a dryness, spiritually, going on.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What\u2019s the difference between checklist Christianity and relationship\u2014a real, vibrant, healthy, spiritually-fit Christianity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> I think it comes back to this whole element of purpose. I think it\u2019s very, very important that we <em>always<\/em> know what God wants us to do as far as seeking that purpose\u2014that the purpose of my life is not simply to go and have a wonderful year, financially. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not lowering that on the pole; but it\u2019s <em>not <\/em>going to make you happy, ultimately, any more than chasing after some fantasy you might have for something in your life. We have to come back to: \u201cWhy has God made me? What is my purpose at this moment, at my age and stage, vocation and location? What is it that God wants me to do?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and this is where what comes to mind for me is Ephesians 2:10, which says, \u201cWe are His workmanship\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014 \u201ccreated in Christ Jesus for good works, which He prepared beforehand, that we would walk in them.\u201d You\u2019re saying that to be spiritually fit, you have to be saying: \u201cWhat are the good works that Christ has created me to walk in?\u201d and \u201cHow can I be walking in those footsteps that He planned out for me?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Absolutely! And one of the things that I think is so pivotal is something that God built in my life many years ago, of what some would regard as the \u201cPrayer of Jabez.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRegardless of who prayed it, it\u2019s in God\u2019s Word in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10. That prayer is so <em>powerful<\/em>, because it calls us to live a life that <em>dreams<\/em> and gives God the chance to inject the power of dreaming what He might want to do in our lives. That\u2019s what people need today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If somebody doesn\u2019t know that prayer\u2014and it\u2019s hard to imagine that anybody doesn\u2019t\u2014because there was a best-selling book, about a decade or more ago, about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But what is that prayer that helps give vision to people?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s a great question. It comes out of 1 Chronicles 4: 9-10\u2014it says, \u201cJabez was more honored than his brothers. His mother named him Jabez and said, \u2018I gave birth to him in pain.\u2019\u201d And here\u2019s the key\u2014verse 10\u2014it says this: \u201cJabez called out to the God of Israel, \u2018If only You would bless me! Extend my border. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c\u2018Let Your hand be with me, and keep me from harm, so that I will not experience pain.\u2019 And God answered his request,\u201d\u2014his prayer. To me, one of the real keys to that is what the first sentence says and the last: \u201cHe called out to God\u201d and \u201cGod answered his prayer.\u201d Wow! I\u2019d better find out what\u2019s between those two!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Imagine that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, you have a verse that sounds like it\u2014if it\u2019s not a life verse for you, it is an important one\u2014Acts 13:36, which says, \u201cAfter David had served the purposes of God in his generation, he slept.\u201d That doesn\u2019t mean he took a nap\u2014he died.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How do you <em>know<\/em> what God\u2019s purposes are in your generation? You\u2019re speaking, right now, Ronnie\u2014and you know this, as a pastor\u2014you\u2019re speaking to young people, all the way to older folks. How can they know what God\u2019s purposes are, and how can they be a part of them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Stop thinking about it way out there; think about it here and now: \u201cHow does God want to use me <em>now<\/em>? What is my ultimate purpose in life?\u201d It should be to bring glory to God. It should be to make myself available to Him and, whatever He wants me to do, I\u2019m willing to do\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014wherever it is, whenever it is, and whomever it\u2019s with. I think, if we start with those basics, then let God fill in the blanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me ask you about the gauge that I went to first when I saw the <em>Living Fit<\/em> book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re going to ask this question; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s because one of my life verses is 1 Timothy 4:8, which says, \u201cBodily exercise profiteth little,\u201d\u2014I\u2019ve kind of held onto that as a verse that I: \u201cThis is the Word of God, and I\u2019ll just claim that for my life.\u201d [Laughter] No! But I would say that, during the time I was raising my kids, this whole idea of physical fitness was something I kept at kind of a baseline level. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI stayed healthy enough; I wasn\u2019t missing work\u2014you know, I was able to function \/ getting enough sleep\u2014but I wasn\u2019t paying a whole lot of attention to my physical fitness; honestly, because the spiritual gauge, and the relational gauge, and the emotional gauge\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014all of the rest! I was having to concentrate on those. How do we keep these\u2014all of these gauges?\u2014but this fitness gauge\u2014from being too important or being too unimportant in our lives?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, the verse you quoted is an excellent verse to quote there; because it does say that \u201cbodily exercise profiteth little,\u201d but that means it profits <em>some<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Some; right! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been schooled by the pastor, right here!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think you just got lanced!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think I did! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> So, with that, I believe that the heart of that needs to be that: \u201cYes; I cannot control the <em>quantity<\/em> of my days\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cbut physical fitness can help me control the <em>quality<\/em> of the days that God has given me on this earth.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re a very busy man\u2014a lot of travel. How do you keep this a part of your calibration of your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> There are two commitments I have, very strongly, every day. You asked, so I\u2019m going to tell you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And by the way, I read these\u2014and I just have to tell you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014a little conviction for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes; oh yes! I\u2019ve got a bad knee from running. [Laughter] It is like, \u201cI don\u2019t know whether I\u2019m going to be able to do what he does!\u201d [Laughter] But go ahead and share with our listeners\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, you know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because it involves the spiritual and also the physical.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; absolutely! And you know what? People ask me, all of the time: \u201cHow do you do what you do? What do you\u2026?\u201d You know, because they see my schedule; or they see me here, doing this\u2026this. Well, all I know is that it comes back to the discipline that God drives in your life and puts in your life. I\u2019m not saying He wants to do this with <em>everybody<\/em>; but with me, I can tell you that there are two\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014really, I want to say there are three things that I have been committed to that I think God has honored. One, above all \/ above everything\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014is I have started my day with God, all the way back to, probably, my senior year in high school\u2014never to miss those moments; and they\u2019ve grown, and grown, and grown. Yes; in quantity, but also in quality. I\u2019m committed to it, regardless of how I feel, or where I am, or what time zone I\u2019m in\u2014that\u2019s discipline number one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber two is that I really have tried to exercise about five or six days a week, and I\u2019ve done it for a <em>long<\/em> time. For me, it\u2019s running\u2014conditioning some for strength matters\u2014but it\u2019s the matter of the cleansing of the body and the cleansing of the mind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve found it to be good for me. I listen to podcasts\u2014I let it be a spiritual time of pouring into <em>me<\/em>. As a pastor of a local church, with a lot of challenges and pressures of life, like everybody else, I\u2019ve found that to be <em>good<\/em> for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the third thing that I\u2019ve been very committed to, really quite honestly, since about 1985\u2014it would be <em>rare<\/em> that we violate this\u2014every Friday, I spend that day with my wife\u2014it\u2019s our Sabbath; it\u2019s our coming back\u2014because, on Sundays, I preach twice\/three\/four [times]\u2014I mean, I\u2019ve done all kinds of things. Sometimes, I have to get on a plane in the middle of the afternoon to go somewhere else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> So, you know, I find, when I put my priorities on some of those main things, God just seems to reward the whole energy factor of life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There was a physical wake-up call in your marriage, back in 1990, with your wife, that really helped calibrate the physical in a fresh way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Share with our listeners what happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, Gina was diagnosed with cancer at a very young age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You had a couple of young sons; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes; very young. One, I think, was seven or eight, and the other was five. It was a desperate time\u2014the initial prognosis was not overall encouraging. We needed God. You know, we just really began to get the best medical care in the world\u2014we believed and felt and did whatever it took to get that\u2014but also, called out to God in prayer and fasting one day a week for that entire year, just petitioning Him and asking Him for a miracle. That was a wake-up call for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, Gina\u2019s still alive. She\u2019s awesome; she did great. In fact, you know, she\u2019ll be at a spin class or some kind of class four days a week at the gym before the sun ever comes up. So the point is that\u2014you know, there\u2019s a constant pull. You know, these bodies we have\u2014they\u2019re not here forever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> You say, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t want to give way too much time,\u201d\u2014I would agree! I don\u2019t want to give too much time to it, but you have to make it where <em>you<\/em> are. The whole thing about living fit, physically, is simply to get yourself in a position where you can, at least, <em>do<\/em> some things that God wants you to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know some people who are\u2014diet and exercise have become idols in their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Absolutely; it\u2019s horrible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know other people, where diet and exercise have been disregarded. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Talk to both groups. What would you say to the folks who have gone overboard with diet and exercise?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019ve been with folks that have gone overboard in all that. I\u2019m not so sure, at one time, I wasn\u2019t there myself a little bit. But I think what I would say to them is: \u201cBalance it out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGet real.\u201d You know, again, what you\u2019re adding is not days to your years. The Scriptures say that your days are numbered\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014but you\u2019re adding <em>quality<\/em> to your life, and there\u2019s only so much you can do. Don\u2019t give <em>all <\/em>of yourself to that. If it\u2019s that important to you, make sure you do it every day; but you don\u2019t die for it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> The second group is a lot easier to talk to. Those, who are followers of Christ\u2014at times, you know, we almost have this other checklist of things we can\u2019t do; okay? \u201cWe can\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201c\u2026can\u2019t dance,\u201d \u201c\u2026can\u2019t play cards.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014\u201c\u2026can\u2019t dance,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s right! The whole \u201cBig Five,\u201d you know\u2014or whatever it was. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> And \u201cYou can\u2019t chew and go with girls that do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Or whatever the old statement was. [Laughter] But, you know\u2014so Christians would think, for years: \u201cI can\u2019t do this,\u201d \/ \u201cI can\u2019t do this.\u201d And pastors are\u2014God knows\u2014pastors are real bad about this. \u201cWell, bless God, I can\u2019t eat; because, boy, people like to eat, and I like to eat.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I like to eat too!\u2014no doubt about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happens is\u2014we justify our schedules. We rationalize: \u201cWe can\u2019t do this to take care of ourselves more because we\u2019ve got to do this.\u201d Well, the bottom line is\u2014this is a hard thing to say, because I struggle with this: \u201cWe become what we eat.\u201d Oftentimes, there are just some simple practices there that we need to reign in\u2014I\u2019m not talking about radically\u2014but reign in\u2014moderation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s one thing that I\u2019ve found, Dennis, personally\u2014is the value of seasons of prayer and fasting, at times; because it calls me to reign in the will of my flesh\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014your appetites; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> \u2014that can absolutely just go crazy; you know? And everybody needs moderation in those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt about it. I was thinking, as you were talking about that, there was a time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and this is past tense\u2014don\u2019t look at me, Bob, with a smirk on your face. [Laughter] You don\u2019t know what I\u2019m about to say! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s funny. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know me really\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014we\u2019ve worked together for twenty-five years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He\u2019s about to talk about ice cream. [Laughter] Aren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; exactly! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly where you were going; I\u2019ll go with you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Truth right there! But I used to think that being an American and a follower of Christ meant you could have ice cream, every night after dinner, with chocolate syrup!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You thought there was a verse in the Bible that required it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I did! And I just realized I couldn\u2019t do that; you know?\u2014it wasn\u2019t a lightning bolt, but I now rarely\u2014Barbara and I are eating the healthiest we\u2019ve ever eaten in our lives, and I attest to what you\u2019re saying\u2014it\u2019s really, really good. In fact, Ronnie\u2014you know, you and I had lunch recently; and we offered you a salad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ronnie:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So we\u2019re trying to think smart in here as well. That\u2019s what I like about your book\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014your book, <em>Living Fit, <\/em>is a <em>great<\/em> exhortation around five gauges. These first two we talked about today\u2014we\u2019ll talk about the other three later\u2014but the first two: spiritually and physically\u2014boy, there couldn\u2019t be two better ones to start with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to thank you for writing that book; but I also want to thank you for the last one that we\u2019ll talk about later, which is emotionally. I think it\u2019s kind of\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014it\u2019s something the Christian community doesn\u2019t seem to want to talk about with any degree of honesty. I think it\u2019s an important subject, and I\u2019m glad you broach the subject.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it would be good for a husband and wife to sit down and look at these five areas and just say, \u201cOkay; on a scale of 1-5, how are we doing spiritually, physically, relationally, financially, [and emotionally]?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Are you going to do that with Mary Ann?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No! This is good for our listeners to do. I\u2019m not saying I should be doing this. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, by the way, Ronnie, I just want to compliment you.
