How much of your time goes to recreational activities?\u2014watching TV, hobbies \/ fun things\u2014versus the amount of time you\u2019re spending reading, or studying, or meditating on, or memorizing Scripture. Emeal Zwayne says where we spend our time is a reflection on what really matters to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Value determines behavior; and when we value something, it\u2019s going to affect what we do in connection to it. I think, oftentimes, we\u2019re so caught up in our fast-paced society that we forget the value of the Word of God\u2014that it is living; it is active; it is sharper than any two-edged sword; and that it\u2019s the foundation for our life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the biggest joys for me has Been\u2014in being a part of the National Bible Bee\u2014is to see the fruit that has come out of it in the lives of these young people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, May 14<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ll hear today about how kids all across America are investing their time in memorizing Scripture through the National Bible Bee and about the profound effect that\u2019s having on their lives. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. You remember\u2014we had a conversation with our friends, Jim and Cecelia Lininger, about this idea they had for a national competition. They had been watching a spelling Bee and they said: \u201cWhy are we rewarding children for memorizing spelling words? We should be rewarding children for memorizing Bible verses.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And so you and I went, and we participated\u2014and mostly stood in <em>awe<\/em> of young people\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in fact, Hannah Leary joins us, who\u2019s one of the winners. What\u2019s the age range, Hannah, that compete in the Bible Bee?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>The competition is for kids, ages seven to eighteen; and then there are three age divisions within those ages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob and I were at the back, watching these young people; and I might say\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tE. Z. Zwayne joins us, who is a national spokesperson for the Bible Bee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You host the TV show\u2014the <em>National Bible Bee<\/em> <em>Competition<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>The <em>National Bible Bee<\/em> game show, of which we did one season of. Let me just say, Dennis and Bob\u2014just like you two, when I went to my first competition\u2014before I was a part of the Bible Bee\u2014my jaw hit the ground when I saw these young people, up on stage, reciting Scripture, almost endlessly. It was just mind-blowing, and what a wonderful ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019re glad you\u2019ve joined us to be able to talk about it. We\u2019re going to talk to families all across the country about how they can get their children involved in this\u2014it\u2019s really a great opportunity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is the tenth anniversary for the Bible Bee. The competition\u2019s going to happen in December; but families, now, are starting to plan. In fact, the enrollment period is open right now. If families want to join in\u2014have their kids memorizing Scripture, whether they go to the competition or not\u2014the Scripture memorization is a great practice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to give our listeners an illustration of kind of the <em>awe<\/em> that accompanies the Bible Bee. I happen to know, Hannah, that you have memorized 12 books of the Bible in totality.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes; that\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just thought it would be fun to have you just quote the first few verses of Hezekiah. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>No pressure, Hannah! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Oh, sorry!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She has a cute grin. There is no book\u2014Hezekiah! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes. No; I\u2019ve Been asked that one <em>too<\/em> many times.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Have you really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes; I have. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, that\u2019s too bad! Okay; so what\u2019s one of the books that you\u2019ve memorized?\u2014and give us the first few verses of <em>that<\/em> book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>My favorite book that I\u2019ve memorized is probably the Book of Philippians.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a good one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>I\u2019m not going to quote the first chapter; but I\u2019m going to quote Chapter 3, because that\u2019s my favorite chapter\u2014not the whole chapter\u2014but I\u2019ll quote a few verses for you. My favorite verses come after Paul has given this list of all these things that he can boast in. You know, he was a Pharisee\u2014a teacher of the law \/ all these different things\u2014but he says:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat things were gain to me, these I counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness which is from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if by any means I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot that I have already attained or am already perfect, but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself apprehended, but one thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind, and reaching forward to the things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, our listeners need to know there were no cue cards \/ no Bible open on the table\u2014that was all from your heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Two questions, as you think about memorizing Scripture\u2014first, listeners are thinking: \u201cAre you just a savant of some kind? [Laughter] I mean, is this just something that normal humans can\u2019t do but you have some switch in your brain that makes it easy for you to do this?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the second question\u2014well, I\u2019ll hold onto the second question. Answer that one first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Okay; yes. A lot of people do think that: \u201cOh, I could <em>never<\/em> do that. I could never memorize Scripture or, at least, that much Scripture. I can maybe memorize a few verses or something, but <em>never<\/em> to the extent that you do. You must be a child prodigy.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not. I did memorize, you know, Psalm 1 and Psalm 23 in elementary school, and that was a part of my family. I\u2019m so thankful for that and the centrality of God\u2019s Word in our family, but it\u2019s something that I would never have thought I could have done. It wasn\u2019t something that I was like: \u201cOh, I\u2019m such a good memorizer. Let\u2019s memorize some Scripture!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s something that you just start, one verse at a time. You memorize that one verse; and you realize: \u201cOh, I can do this! Let\u2019s try another one,\u201d and you add another one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the beauty of the National Bible Bee\u2014it\u2019s a competition. Competition motivates you to do things. For me, there was excellent motivation to see how much I could do. That first year, I did not memorize all the verses that were required of us\u2014I didn\u2019t get to all of them\u2014but I was so surprised at how much I could do. It showed me that I was able to do something that I never thought possible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I know for me, even when I come back to memorizing\u2014you know, I\u2019ve taken a break, maybe for a few months, and come back to try to memorize\u2014it\u2019s <em>hard<\/em>. It\u2019s not like it comes easy for me <em>now<\/em>. It\u2019s something I have to slowly build up to again and work that muscle of my brain. As you work it, it becomes easier.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, here\u2019s the second question\u2014because this passage that you memorized, almost a decade ago, has now been resident with you for a decade\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you memorized it as a young girl for competition purposes. How has Philippians 3 served you over the last decade, because it\u2019s been in your heart and not just in your Bible?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes, yes; I picked that passage specifically because it has become such a part of who I am. Like I said\u2014in the part just before, Paul\u2019s listing all these things that he has done in his own strength that he could boast in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I look at my life \/ my Christian life\u2014growing up in a Christian home, and growing up memorizing and studying for the National Bible Bee, and a champion on the National Bible Bee and being praised for that, and all those different things that I could boast in\u2014knowing Scripture \/ you know, like the Pharisees\u2014they knew Scripture\u2014but they didn\u2019t know Christ. That\u2019s the thing that we need to remember in our study of Scripture\u2014is that it points us to Christ and a relationship with Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo for me, that passage has become what I cling to; because it\u2019s not about what I\u2019ve done \/ it\u2019s not about what I can do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s all about what Christ has done for me; and that\u2019s what gives my life worth, and that\u2019s what gives me purpose, and hope, and confidence as I move forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>E. Z., you\u2019re a national spokesman for the National Bible Bee. I understand you have 24 books of the Bible memorized. [Laughter<strong>]<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Sixty-seven! Sixty-seven, Dennis. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So you have Hezekiah down; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Right! Absolutely. [Laughter] Yes; you know, Scripture memory\u2019s been a passion of mine for a long time\u2014ever since I got saved. I am working on my 12<sup>th<\/sup> book of the New Testament right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you, though, one of the things about the National Bible Bee for me has been how humbling it\u2019s been; because in those books I\u2019ve memorized\u2014when you add all the verses together\u2014they come up to somewhere around 800 or so verses. It\u2019s taken me <em>years<\/em> to do that. These young people are memorizing\u2014the senior level, at least\u2014they are memorizing close to 800\/900 verses over the course of about three months. So when I start thinking: \u201cWow! Look at what I\u2026\u201d\u2014it\u2019s like <em>years<\/em> versus <em>months<\/em>\u2014and they\u2019re up there, under <em>pressure<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; that\u2019s what I was going to say. They\u2019re in front of an audience of a thousand people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Exactly; and you know, it\u2019s being recorded\u2014their parents \/ friends are there, and they\u2019re up there\u2014but like Hannah said\u2014the competition is just a part of it. The real heart of it is that these kids know the Word of God and make Him known, which is a part of our vision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I remember meeting Hannah for the first time when we were in Nashville. You would have been\u2014what, were you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Fourteen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Fourteen years old\u2014she was a competitor. I was a judge for the Bible Bee that year. You were up on stage; and I was telling you what passages you needed to recite, and listening to you recite them, and telling you whether you got it right or wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Dennis, you\u2019re right\u2014it is amazing to see these kids doing this\u2014but again, I went away, thinking, \u201cThey don\u2019t recognize the benefit that has accrued to them that is going to serve them over time,\u201d because Hannah, what Psalm 1 says is that, when your roots are sunk down deep into the soil of God\u2019s Word \/ when God\u2019s Word is in your heart, you will be like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014well, what you will be like then, Hannah?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>\u201c\u2026a tree planted by rivers of water\" [Laughter] \u201cthat brings forth its fruit in its season.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and it doesn\u2019t wither.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>And it doesn\u2019t; yes\u2014\u201cand whatever he does shall prosper.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I love it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, what would you say to parents, who are listening right now, and maybe some kids; because we have a good listening audience of kids, who act like they\u2019re not listening\u2014[Laughter]\u2014they don\u2019t want their parents to know they really are listening to Dennis and Bob on this broadcast, and our guests. But what would you say to parents, who are fascinated by this and think, \u201cMaybe we ought to step out and try this\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>As I was sharing with you gentlemen earlier, value determines behavior. When we value something, it\u2019s going to affect what we do in connection to it. I think, oftentimes, we\u2019re so caught up in our fast-paced society that we forget the value of the Word of God\u2014that it is living; it is active; it is sharper than any two-edged sword; and that it\u2019s the foundation for our life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the biggest joys for me has been\u2014in being a part of the National Bible Bee\u2014is to see the fruit that has come out of it in the lives of these young people. We get testimonies from young people, who didn\u2019t even know the Lord, and they came to Christ as a result of the National Bible Bee. They grew up in a Christian home\u2014some of them even homeschooled \/ they know the faith backwards and forwards\u2014but they weren\u2019t confronted that intensely with the Word of God. It did its work, and it opened their eyes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy encouragement to parents\u2014and to the children, who are listening\u2014is: \u201cLook, there is no greater way that your time can be invested, especially when you\u2019re young. That\u2019s why these young kids have been able to memorize so many verses, because there is an advantage to youth. There\u2019s nothing more valuable that you can do while you\u2019re young than to hide the Word of God in your heart.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We should throw in here that, at the end of this competition, some of these folks will go to the finals. There are more than $100,000 in cash prizes. You know, we see the negativity that\u2019s going on in our culture today\u2014with all of the degradation and sin and so forth\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but to see hope that these young people \/ this new generation is rising up and internalizing the Word of God, which is able to keep them from the ways of wickedness and destruction\u2014it just gives you such hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know, we talked about the prize money. The exciting thing is\u2014these young people that are getting it are receiving wisdom from the Word of God so they know what to do with it rather than just waste it. [Laughter]\u00a0 There\u2019s a big plus there as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I have to tell you\u2014when we were talking to our friends at the Bible Bee about this, not long ago\u2014and they said: \u201cWe meet a lot of families who heard about the Bible Bee for the first time, listening to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014that\u2019s where it came on their radar screen\u2014and they said, \u2018Maybe we should try this.\u2019\u201d They went to the website; they checked it out; they decided to put their toe in the water, as you described; and then it caught fire in their home, and they wound up with champions like Hannah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, this is kind of fun\u2014we want you to hear\u2014this is from ten years ago\u2014right after nine-year-old Rebecca Horning had won theBible Bee the first year in Washington, DC. Hast thou not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary. They shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint.\u201d Isaiah 40:28-31.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s cool! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I\u2019m watching Hannah nodding her head.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Me too\u2014you were reciting that right along with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know that verse too; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes; maybe not as word perfect as she did, but\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>You know, out of the mouth of babes\u2014I mean, what a delight that is to hear these young people doing that. It\u2019s just tremendous.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, just a word of encouragement for anyone listening that thinks, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I could do this.\u201d Before I came a Christian, I remember going to church with one of my friends. The pastor said, \u201cTurn in your Bibles to,\u201d\u2014something like\u2014\u201cMatthew, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChapter 16, verse 27,\u201d or something like that. I remember thinking, \u201cWhat in the world is a Matthew?\u2014and what\u2019s that numeric code he just rattled off?\u201d I remember distinctly thinking to myself, \u201cI will <em>never<\/em> learn how to use a Bible.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere I am today, having memorized, now, 11 books of the Bible, being the national spokesman for the National Bible Bee. So, if you don\u2019t think you can do it, rest assured that, through the power of the Holy Spirit and by God\u2019s grace and help, you can. It\u2019s possible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I have to tell you two quick stories. The first is\u2014when my wife and I were dating, we were at a Bible study together. The speaker mentioned the fact that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, that it\u2019s a guarantee of redemption. He didn\u2019t cite \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEphesians 1 when he said it. I\u2019m sitting next to my girlfriend; and she turns to \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEphesians 1, and it\u2019s highlighted in her Bible. I thought: \u201cHow did she know where that was? That\u2019s kind of spooky!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, I really: \u201cMemorizing the Bible?\u201d In fact, she came to me later on, and said, \u201cWhat do you think about us memorizing some verses from the Bible together?\u201d I said, \u201cYes; that would be great!\u201d Now, I said that would be great; because I really liked her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, that\u2019s where I was going with it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I said, \u201cWell, what verses did you have in mind?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said, \u201cI was thinking maybe like a chapter.\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m thinking, \u201cA chapter?!\u201d\u2014this is what I\u2019m thinking\u2014\u201cA chapter?!\u2014a whole chapter!\u2014memorize a whole chapter?\u201d But I said: \u201cOh, wow! What chapter did you have in mind?\u201d [Laughter] She said, \u201cI was thinking Philippians 2.\u201d And I said, \u201cThat\u2019s a great chapter.\u201d I was thinking, \u201cIs that Old Testament or New Testament?\u201d\u2014right?\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I didn\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut Mary Ann, early on in our relationship, said, \u201cLet\u2019s make this a priority.\u201d I can still recite Philippians 2\u2014from college \/ not the whole chapter\u2014but I got far enough to learn, \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility regard one another as more important than yourself.\u201d That\u2019s served me well, in marriage, over the years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it\u2019s one of your favorite passages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve heard you quote that a lot, here, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. That passage has truly served you well. You\u2019ve not only hidden it in your heart, but you\u2019ve applied it on numerous occasions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>And one thing\u2014you know, what E.Z. was saying about, \u201cOh my goodness, I could never do this,\u201d\u2014<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and families thinking about this and wanting their kids to be involved\u2014and the great thing about the National Bible Bee is the Summer Study is really doable. It meets you right where you are. It\u2019s not like you have to know how to memorize Scripture or know how to study Scripture to be a part of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe study \/ the discovery journal that they get\u2014it takes you, step by step, through a passage of Scripture. It\u2019s 20 minutes a day, and there are two memory passages a week. Even if you don\u2019t get through the whole thing, just start\u2014you know, see what you can get done. Every single verse \/ every little lesson gleaned and learned is going to benefit you; and it\u2019s not going to return void, and you won\u2019t regret it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If you have kids five years old, four years old, three years old\u2014can you do this with kids that little?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes; the beginner study is designed for, usually, ages five and six. For my family, I\u2019m the oldest of ten. My youngest brother is going to be one in July; so we have a whole age range, but we do it as a family. Even the little ones get involved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey might not be studying 20 minutes a day, but they\u2019re sitting along with their big sister and learning along. As a family, we\u2019re reading the passage together. It\u2019s a really great way to unite the family around the same portion of Scripture. Each age division has their age-appropriate study, but then you\u2019re able to come together and learn together as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Yes; and talk about a summer to remember\u2014you know, so often, summers are wasted just kind of lazing around; but to be able to have memorized the Word of God that you\u2019ll treasure with you\u2014as the Word says: \u201cHow can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your Word. Your Word have I hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And E.Z., it seems to me, as families look at this opportunity, they would all benefit\u2014not just the children\u2014the parents as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Absolutely; that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just want to encourage\u2014well, I want to quote a passage of Scripture: \u201cDon\u2019t be merely hearers only, but be doers of the Word.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>That\u2019s right; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In this case, why don\u2019t you be a doer of memorizing the Word and become a part of the National Bible Bee and take your family into an immersion of the Scriptures? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re not going to sorry that you did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; this would be a great summertime activity for families to do. You remember\u2014we had a conversation with our friends, Jim and Cecelia Lininger, about this idea they had for a national competition. They had been watching a spelling Bee and they said: \u201cWhy are we rewarding children for memorizing spelling words? We should be rewarding children for memorizing Bible verses.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And so you and I went, and we participated\u2014and mostly stood in <em>awe<\/em> of young people\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014in fact, Hannah Leary joins us, who\u2019s one of the winners. What\u2019s the age range, Hannah, that compete in the Bible Bee?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>The competition is for kids, ages seven to eighteen; and then there are three age divisions within those ages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob and I were at the back, watching these young people; and I might say\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tE. Z. Zwayne joins us, who is a national spokesperson for the Bible Bee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You host the TV show\u2014the <em>National Bible Bee<\/em> <em>Competition<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>The <em>National Bible Bee<\/em> game show, of which we did one season of. Let me just say, Dennis and Bob\u2014just like you two, when I went to my first competition\u2014before I was a part of the Bible Bee\u2014my jaw hit the ground when I saw these young people, up on stage, reciting Scripture, almost endlessly. It was just mind-blowing, and what a wonderful ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019re glad you\u2019ve joined us to be able to talk about it. We\u2019re going to talk to families all across the country about how they can get their children involved in this\u2014it\u2019s really a great opportunity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is the tenth anniversary for the Bible Bee. The competition\u2019s going to happen in December; but families, now, are starting to plan. In fact, the enrollment period is open right now. If families want to join in\u2014have their kids memorizing Scripture, whether they go to the competition or not\u2014the Scripture memorization is a great practice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to give our listeners an illustration of kind of the <em>awe<\/em> that accompanies the Bible Bee. I happen to know, Hannah, that you have memorized 12 books of the Bible in totality.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes; that\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just thought it would be fun to have you just quote the first few verses of Hezekiah. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>No pressure, Hannah! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Oh, sorry!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She has a cute grin. There is no book\u2014Hezekiah! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes. No; I\u2019ve Been asked that one <em>too<\/em> many times.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Have you really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes; I have. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, that\u2019s too bad! Okay; so what\u2019s one of the books that you\u2019ve memorized?\u2014and give us the first few verses of <em>that<\/em> book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>My favorite book that I\u2019ve memorized is probably the Book of Philippians.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a good one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>I\u2019m not going to quote the first chapter; but I\u2019m going to quote Chapter 3, because that\u2019s my favorite chapter\u2014not the whole chapter\u2014but I\u2019ll quote a few verses for you. My favorite verses come after Paul has given this list of all these things that he can boast in. You know, he was a Pharisee\u2014a teacher of the law \/ all these different things\u2014but he says:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat things were gain to me, these I counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness which is from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if by any means I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot that I have already attained or am already perfect, but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself apprehended, but one thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind, and reaching forward to the things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, our listeners need to know there were no cue cards \/ no Bible open on the table\u2014that was all from your heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Two questions, as you think about memorizing Scripture\u2014first, listeners are thinking: \u201cAre you just a savant of some kind? [Laughter] I mean, is this just something that normal humans can\u2019t do but you have some switch in your brain that makes it easy for you to do this?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the second question\u2014well, I\u2019ll hold onto the second question. Answer that one first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Okay; yes. A lot of people do think that: \u201cOh, I could <em>never<\/em> do that. I could never memorize Scripture or, at least, that much Scripture. I can maybe memorize a few verses or something, but <em>never<\/em> to the extent that you do. You must be a child prodigy.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not. I did memorize, you know, Psalm 1 and Psalm 23 in elementary school, and that was a part of my family. I\u2019m so thankful for that and the centrality of God\u2019s Word in our family, but it\u2019s something that I would never have thought I could have done. It wasn\u2019t something that I was like: \u201cOh, I\u2019m such a good memorizer. Let\u2019s memorize some Scripture!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s something that you just start, one verse at a time. You memorize that one verse; and you realize: \u201cOh, I can do this! Let\u2019s try another one,\u201d and you add another one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the beauty of the National Bible Bee\u2014it\u2019s a competition. Competition motivates you to do things. For me, there was excellent motivation to see how much I could do. That first year, I did not memorize all the verses that were required of us\u2014I didn\u2019t get to all of them\u2014but I was so surprised at how much I could do. It showed me that I was able to do something that I never thought possible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I know for me, even when I come back to memorizing\u2014you know, I\u2019ve taken a break, maybe for a few months, and come back to try to memorize\u2014it\u2019s <em>hard<\/em>. It\u2019s not like it comes easy for me <em>now<\/em>. It\u2019s something I have to slowly build up to again and work that muscle of my brain. As you work it, it becomes easier.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, here\u2019s the second question\u2014because this passage that you memorized, almost a decade ago, has now been resident with you for a decade\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you memorized it as a young girl for competition purposes. How has Philippians 3 served you over the last decade, because it\u2019s been in your heart and not just in your Bible?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes, yes; I picked that passage specifically because it has become such a part of who I am. Like I said\u2014in the part just before, Paul\u2019s listing all these things that he has done in his own strength that he could boast in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I look at my life \/ my Christian life\u2014growing up in a Christian home, and growing up memorizing and studying for the National Bible Bee, and a champion on the National Bible Bee and being praised for that, and all those different things that I could boast in\u2014knowing Scripture \/ you know, like the Pharisees\u2014they knew Scripture\u2014but they didn\u2019t know Christ. That\u2019s the thing that we need to remember in our study of Scripture\u2014is that it points us to Christ and a relationship with Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo for me, that passage has become what I cling to; because it\u2019s not about what I\u2019ve done \/ it\u2019s not about what I can do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s all about what Christ has done for me; and that\u2019s what gives my life worth, and that\u2019s what gives me purpose, and hope, and confidence as I move forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>E. Z., you\u2019re a national spokesman for the National Bible Bee. I understand you have 24 books of the Bible memorized. [Laughter<strong>]<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Sixty-seven! Sixty-seven, Dennis. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So you have Hezekiah down; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Right! Absolutely. [Laughter] Yes; you know, Scripture memory\u2019s been a passion of mine for a long time\u2014ever since I got saved. I am working on my 12<sup>th<\/sup> book of the New Testament right now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you, though, one of the things about the National Bible Bee for me has been how humbling it\u2019s been; because in those books I\u2019ve memorized\u2014when you add all the verses together\u2014they come up to somewhere around 800 or so verses. It\u2019s taken me <em>years<\/em> to do that. These young people are memorizing\u2014the senior level, at least\u2014they are memorizing close to 800\/900 verses over the course of about three months. So when I start thinking: \u201cWow! Look at what I\u2026\u201d\u2014it\u2019s like <em>years<\/em> versus <em>months<\/em>\u2014and they\u2019re up there, under <em>pressure<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; that\u2019s what I was going to say. They\u2019re in front of an audience of a thousand people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Exactly; and you know, it\u2019s being recorded\u2014their parents \/ friends are there, and they\u2019re up there\u2014but like Hannah said\u2014the competition is just a part of it. The real heart of it is that these kids know the Word of God and make Him known, which is a part of our vision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I remember meeting Hannah for the first time when we were in Nashville. You would have been\u2014what, were you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Fourteen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Fourteen years old\u2014she was a competitor. I was a judge for the Bible Bee that year. You were up on stage; and I was telling you what passages you needed to recite, and listening to you recite them, and telling you whether you got it right or wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Dennis, you\u2019re right\u2014it is amazing to see these kids doing this\u2014but again, I went away, thinking, \u201cThey don\u2019t recognize the benefit that has accrued to them that is going to serve them over time,\u201d because Hannah, what Psalm 1 says is that, when your roots are sunk down deep into the soil of God\u2019s Word \/ when God\u2019s Word is in your heart, you will be like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014well, what you will be like then, Hannah?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>\u201c\u2026a tree planted by rivers of water\" [Laughter] \u201cthat brings forth its fruit in its season.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and it doesn\u2019t wither.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>And it doesn\u2019t; yes\u2014\u201cand whatever he does shall prosper.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I love it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, what would you say to parents, who are listening right now, and maybe some kids; because we have a good listening audience of kids, who act like they\u2019re not listening\u2014[Laughter]\u2014they don\u2019t want their parents to know they really are listening to Dennis and Bob on this broadcast, and our guests. But what would you say to parents, who are fascinated by this and think, \u201cMaybe we ought to step out and try this\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>As I was sharing with you gentlemen earlier, value determines behavior. When we value something, it\u2019s going to affect what we do in connection to it. I think, oftentimes, we\u2019re so caught up in our fast-paced society that we forget the value of the Word of God\u2014that it is living; it is active; it is sharper than any two-edged sword; and that it\u2019s the foundation for our life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the biggest joys for me has been\u2014in being a part of the National Bible Bee\u2014is to see the fruit that has come out of it in the lives of these young people. We get testimonies from young people, who didn\u2019t even know the Lord, and they came to Christ as a result of the National Bible Bee. They grew up in a Christian home\u2014some of them even homeschooled \/ they know the faith backwards and forwards\u2014but they weren\u2019t confronted that intensely with the Word of God. It did its work, and it opened their eyes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy encouragement to parents\u2014and to the children, who are listening\u2014is: \u201cLook, there is no greater way that your time can be invested, especially when you\u2019re young. That\u2019s why these young kids have been able to memorize so many verses, because there is an advantage to youth. There\u2019s nothing more valuable that you can do while you\u2019re young than to hide the Word of God in your heart.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We should throw in here that, at the end of this competition, some of these folks will go to the finals. There are more than $100,000 in cash prizes. You know, we see the negativity that\u2019s going on in our culture today\u2014with all of the degradation and sin and so forth\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but to see hope that these young people \/ this new generation is rising up and internalizing the Word of God, which is able to keep them from the ways of wickedness and destruction\u2014it just gives you such hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know, we talked about the prize money. The exciting thing is\u2014these young people that are getting it are receiving wisdom from the Word of God so they know what to do with it rather than just waste it. [Laughter]\u00a0 There\u2019s a big plus there as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I have to tell you\u2014when we were talking to our friends at the Bible Bee about this, not long ago\u2014and they said: \u201cWe meet a lot of families who heard about the Bible Bee for the first time, listening to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014that\u2019s where it came on their radar screen\u2014and they said, \u2018Maybe we should try this.\u2019\u201d They went to the website; they checked it out; they decided to put their toe in the water, as you described; and then it caught fire in their home, and they wound up with champions like Hannah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, this is kind of fun\u2014we want you to hear\u2014this is from ten years ago\u2014right after nine-year-old Rebecca Horning had won theBible Bee the first year in Washington, DC. Rebecca Horning joins us. She just won first place in the primary division of the National Bible Bee. Hast thou not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary. They shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint.\u201d Isaiah 40:28-31.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s cool! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I\u2019m watching Hannah nodding her head.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Me too\u2014you were reciting that right along with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know that verse too; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes; maybe not as word perfect as she did, but\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>You know, out of the mouth of babes\u2014I mean, what a delight that is to hear these young people doing that. It\u2019s just tremendous.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, just a word of encouragement for anyone listening that thinks, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I could do this.\u201d Before I came a Christian, I remember going to church with one of my friends. The pastor said, \u201cTurn in your Bibles to,\u201d\u2014something like\u2014\u201cMatthew, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChapter 16, verse 27,\u201d or something like that. I remember thinking, \u201cWhat in the world is a Matthew?\u2014and what\u2019s that numeric code he just rattled off?\u201d I remember distinctly thinking to myself, \u201cI will <em>never<\/em> learn how to use a Bible.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere I am today, having memorized, now, 11 books of the Bible, being the national spokesman for the National Bible Bee. So, if you don\u2019t think you can do it, rest assured that, through the power of the Holy Spirit and by God\u2019s grace and help, you can. It\u2019s possible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I have to tell you two quick stories. The first is\u2014when my wife and I were dating, we were at a Bible study together. The speaker mentioned the fact that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, that it\u2019s a guarantee of redemption. He didn\u2019t cite \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEphesians 1 when he said it. I\u2019m sitting next to my girlfriend; and she turns to \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEphesians 1, and it\u2019s highlighted in her Bible. I thought: \u201cHow did she know where that was? That\u2019s kind of spooky!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, I really: \u201cMemorizing the Bible?\u201d In fact, she came to me later on, and said, \u201cWhat do you think about us memorizing some verses from the Bible together?\u201d I said, \u201cYes; that would be great!\u201d Now, I said that would be great; because I really liked her\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, that\u2019s where I was going with it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I said, \u201cWell, what verses did you have in mind?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said, \u201cI was thinking maybe like a chapter.\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m thinking, \u201cA chapter?!\u201d\u2014this is what I\u2019m thinking\u2014\u201cA chapter?!\u2014a whole chapter!\u2014memorize a whole chapter?\u201d But I said: \u201cOh, wow! What chapter did you have in mind?\u201d [Laughter] She said, \u201cI was thinking Philippians 2.\u201d And I said, \u201cThat\u2019s a great chapter.\u201d I was thinking, \u201cIs that Old Testament or New Testament?\u201d\u2014right?\u2014[Laughter]\u2014I didn\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut Mary Ann, early on in our relationship, said, \u201cLet\u2019s make this a priority.\u201d I can still recite Philippians 2\u2014from college \/ not the whole chapter\u2014but I got far enough to learn, \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility regard one another as more important than yourself.\u201d That\u2019s served me well, in marriage, over the years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it\u2019s one of your favorite passages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve heard you quote that a lot, here, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. That passage has truly served you well. You\u2019ve not only hidden it in your heart, but you\u2019ve applied it on numerous occasions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>And one thing\u2014you know, what E.Z. was saying about, \u201cOh my goodness, I could never do this,\u201d\u2014<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and families thinking about this and wanting their kids to be involved\u2014and the great thing about the National Bible Bee is the Summer Study is really doable. It meets you right where you are. It\u2019s not like you have to know how to memorize Scripture or know how to study Scripture to be a part of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe study \/ the discovery journal that they get\u2014it takes you, step by step, through a passage of Scripture. It\u2019s 20 minutes a day, and there are two memory passages a week. Even if you don\u2019t get through the whole thing, just start\u2014you know, see what you can get done. Every single verse \/ every little lesson gleaned and learned is going to benefit you; and it\u2019s not going to return void, and you won\u2019t regret it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If you have kids five years old, four years old, three years old\u2014can you do this with kids that little?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah: <\/strong>Yes; the beginner study is designed for, usually, ages five and six. For my family, I\u2019m the oldest of ten. My youngest brother is going to be one in July; so we have a whole age range, but we do it as a family. Even the little ones get involved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey might not be studying 20 minutes a day, but they\u2019re sitting along with their big sister and learning along. As a family, we\u2019re reading the passage together. It\u2019s a really great way to unite the family around the same portion of Scripture. Each age division has their age-appropriate study, but then you\u2019re able to come together and learn together as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Yes; and talk about a summer to remember\u2014you know, so often, summers are wasted just kind of lazing around; but to be able to have memorized the Word of God that you\u2019ll treasure with you\u2014as the Word says: \u201cHow can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your Word. Your Word have I hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And E.Z., it seems to me, as families look at this opportunity, they would all benefit\u2014not just the children\u2014the parents as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>Absolutely; that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just want to encourage\u2014well, I want to quote a passage of Scripture: \u201cDon\u2019t be merely hearers only, but be doers of the Word.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emeal: <\/strong>That\u2019s right; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In this case, why don\u2019t you be a doer of memorizing the Word and become a part of the National Bible Bee and take your family into an immersion of the Scriptures? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re not going to sorry that you did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; this would be a great summertime activity for families to do.
