Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth says that should not be, for a lot of reasons.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Paul says to Titus: \u201cOlder women, you\u2019re supposed to be an example of pure speech, not slandering, so that these younger women around you\u2014that you\u2019re investing in\u2014you\u2019re setting the pace for them; you\u2019re leading the way; you\u2019re passing the baton onto them. They can look at you and they can see an example of a woman whose speech is gracious, it\u2019s kind, it\u2019s true. They say, \u2018I want to be that way. How can I know Jesus and His Word in a way that will make me like that?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, February 20<sup>th<\/sup>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Bob, I want you to know this so you can pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; alright. Now we\u2019re okay; because it\u2019s a prayer request, not gossip.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, this is not\u2014this is not a show today that is just for one gender, although we\u2019re going to be speaking with a couple of ladies. Barbara joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, my wife of 45 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Thanks; glad to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Nancy Wolgemuth joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Welcome back to you as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Thank you, Dennis; and congratulations to you all for 45 years!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Thanks!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Nancy leads a ministry called <em>Revive Our Hearts<\/em>, and the <em>True Woman<\/em> movement, and has written a book called <em>Adorned<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh wait, wait, wait\u2014where\u2019s the prayer request or the gossip?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m getting ready to go there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014because Nancy talks about some characteristics of women and what they ought to be like today. She just comes out of Titus, Chapter 2. One of the first things that\u2019s mentioned in the book is gossip and slander. Nancy, it\u2019s relevant for all people; but do you think it is especially relevant for women?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Could I say it\u2019s particularly addressed, in Titus 2, to older women? You know, I\u2019m an older woman. I was actually a younger woman when I started writing this book. It took so long that, in the process, I became an older woman. [Laughter] I was single when I started; I ended up married before I finished this book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI take seriously this thing about slander. Now, Scripture talks about slander for men, for women, for every age group\u2014using our tongues in ways that destroy, and hurt, and wound rather than heal and encourage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut Paul specifically says, in Titus 2, here that \u201colder women are to be reverent in behavior.\u201d Then, the first example he gives of what that looks like \/ what that means is they are not to be slanderers. I pondered this passage a lot. I thought: \u201cYou know, what were the old women doing in this church that he was writing to? Were they just talking too much?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, maybe\u2014they\u2019ve raised their children; they were in a season of life where maybe they were just letting down their guard a little bit and relaxing. The women would get together and they would chatter. It might have been under the guise of sharing prayer requests; but Paul says, \u201cIf you\u2019re going to have the impact Christ wants you to have for the gospel, if you\u2019re going to be the kind of woman that younger women can find as an example of how to love and follow Christ, the first thing you have to do is watch your tongue.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cControl it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to know what you found out about the word, \u201cslander\u201d; because if you\u2019ve been thinking about it for a few years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>I have been thinking about it a lot. It\u2019s a little scary thing; because most of the times, when that word\u2014the Greek word that\u2019s translated \u201cslanderer\u201d\u2014it\u2019s the word, <em>diabolos<\/em> [\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf]; devil; diabolical. Almost every time when that word is used in the New Testament, it refers to the devil.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014who is the father of lies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>\u2014who\u2019s the father of lies, and he uses words to deceive. He slanders <em>us<\/em> to God\u2014he\u2019s the accuser of the brethren. He slanders God to <em>us<\/em>\u2014makes us think that God is not good; God is not kind; God is not gracious. And then, when <em>we<\/em> speak words\u2014that are untrue, that are hurtful, that wound, that destroy people\u2014we are actually playing the part of the devil\u2014we\u2019re fulfilling his agenda; we\u2019re acting as his agents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I realized that, I thought: \u201cWow! This is not a <em>small<\/em> thing!\u201d\u2014just one word here: \u201cnot slanderers\u201d\u2014but it\u2019s a big concept.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And can we just make it clear that slander doesn\u2019t have to come through the mouth?\u2014it can come through the fingers on the keyboard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>There\u2019s a lot of it going on on the internet, and it\u2019s so easy to do. You see something you don\u2019t agree with\u2014you can comment. It can happen on Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> \/ on Twitter. There\u2019s a <em>lot<\/em> of slander that goes on, including among those of us who are Christians.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I think people think it\u2019s safer; because they\u2019re not doing it to someone\u2019s face. I think men and women <em>both<\/em> say things online\/on screens that they shouldn\u2019t, because it <em>feels<\/em> more removed and more distant\u2014and: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t dare say this to your face, but I might feel like repeating it to someone else.\u201d I think it\u2019s exploded\u2014of course, talking, and ridicule, and all kinds of things that are unhealthy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>I saw a really sad tweet the other day from someone that we all know\u2014she\u2019s the daughter of a well-known Christian leader. The leader has been slandered a lot in the Christian press recently for something that he has stood for\u2014it is truth, but he\u2019s been slammed for it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis college-aged\/recent college graduate daughter wrote a tweet and said, \u201cSometimes when people rant about other people on the internet, they forget that those people have family; and that the family members see what\u2019s written, and it can be really hurtful.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy heart just went out to this young woman. Her dad is a godly man, and she knows that; but still she\u2019s reading and seeing what people are saying, who have this theological nuance difference with her dad. They\u2019re not being <em>careful<\/em> in their words. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when I write things \/ when I say things, one of the thoughts I try to have is, \u201cWould I say this this way \/ would I write this this way if the person that I\u2019m talking about were here in the room?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cor I knew that person would be reading it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I saw the tweet you\u2019re talking about. I saw her brother chime in and say, \u201cLittle sister speaks truth.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, there\u2019s a lot of damage that can come from slander. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara, I\u2019m just curious\u2014Nancy talks about this being directed toward older women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we grow older, we\u2019re supposed to be growing more godly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014wiser.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; have you found sins of the tongue, like slander and gossip, have been harder to control as you\u2019ve gotten older; or has your growth in grace given you a check against those?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You know, that\u2019s a really good question. Maybe I should ask my husband. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you know what? I was thinking about answering it for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, because Nancy first started talking about it, I was thinking, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t know that it\u2026\u201d\u2014again, I haven\u2019t studied this like you have; but I think it\u2019s a temptation for women of <em>all<\/em> ages. I know\u2014when I was younger, and my kids were in school, and I would be talking to other mothers\u2014that\u2019s when I remember feeling that kind of thing; because one mother would be talking about how her child made straight \u201cA\u201ds and mine hadn\u2019t. You know, there\u2019s that competitiveness with moms and kids. That\u2019s kind of where my brain was going. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know; what\u2019s your answer? I\u2019m anxious to hear what you have to say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just would have to say, Bob\u2014in answer to your question about \u201cHow has Barbara struggled with that?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I just don\u2019t recall Barbara saying unkind things about other people, or half-truths, or lies. If I share something in confidence with her, it\u2019s kept in confidence. She\u2019s a person of her word. She has other struggles in her life. She knows mine; I know hers. I wouldn\u2019t say slander would be one of the battles that you [Barbara] would be fighting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And that\u2019s the point of this passage\u2014is that, as Christian women, we\u2019re supposed to be examples of <em>not<\/em> slandering. The world slanders people, but we\u2019re not supposed to be that way. So, what you just said about Barbara\u2014every husband should be able to say about his Christian wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; she\u2019s a trustworthy person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>But I can identify with something you wrote in your book, and that is that you have a tendency to edit your husband. My weakness and struggle isn\u2019t so much with what I say about other people or repeating things; my struggle is more in my marriage, because I don\u2019t have my children to correct anymore and to help them eat right\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cUse your napkin,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t burp at the table,\u201d\u2014all that kind of stuff. That\u2019s all <em>over<\/em>. So, he gets <em>all<\/em> of my attention that used to be spread out between six children. He gets his own, plus their measure\u2014so that\u2019s where I struggle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But that\u2019s not slander.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s called \u201cBuilding up your husband.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I just had to tell Nancy that I understood. When I read that in her book, I went, \u201cOh yes; I\u2019m an editor too.\u201d Dennis would agree. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Nancy, why are we predisposed to want to slander and gossip? I mean, what\u2019s the appeal in doing that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Well, you know, \u201cThe devil made me do it,\u201d\u2014it is diabolical\u2014but <em>really<\/em>, doesn\u2019t it come down to a heart of pride?\u2014thinking that I want to exalt myself. I do that by putting down the other person. We\u2019re insecure \/ we\u2019re all insecure; so we want to make ourselves look better. To do that, we try to put other people down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt has the <em>exact<\/em> opposite effect\u2014we really destroy ourselves and our relationships when we use these biting, or sarcastic, or critical, or evil-speaking words of one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat power there is in words of grace\u2014words that minister healing, words that are true, words that build up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Those take the control of the Holy Spirit. Your natural flesh isn\u2019t going to say those lovely kind of words; but when the Spirit controls us, our words are going to be <em>powerfully<\/em> positive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, I\u2019ll tell you what the temptation is\u2014it\u2019s to be in the know\u2014I want to be in the know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>That\u2019s pride.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want some knowledge. I have knowledge about this person that I pass on, because that\u2019s <em>powerful<\/em>. That means: \u201cI know it; you don\u2019t,\u201d and I share this juicy morsel, which may not be the truth or maybe a half-truth. I think we all like\u2014we all like being the center of attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It can be the truth and still be gossip; right, Nancy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>It can be if it has a negative or hurtful effect\u2014if that\u2019s the intent\u2014is to harm, even if it\u2019s truthful. The Scripture\u2014this passage, says, \u201cDon\u2019t do that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you just said, Dennis\u2014if I could just have a moment of kind of mutual self-confession here\u2014don\u2019t you find that many times we, as Christian leaders, have that temptation, when we talk with each other, to be in the know? We heard something \/ we know something; we share something. We don\u2019t get a pass on this\u2014this is speaking to us as well. Just because we happen to hear what\u2019s going on in the Christian world\u2014and we, maybe, read some pieces or talked with somebody\u2014I think there\u2019s some care needed, whether you\u2019re a man or a woman \/ Christian leadership or not\u2014we can destroy or heal with our words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I totally agree with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if somebody is hearing this and they\u2019re going: \u201cOkay; I have some issues with my tongue. I lean into gossip; I lean into slander; I can be sharp-tongued. I posted something yesterday that I should go back and take down now,\u201d how do you counsel somebody? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do you, as an older woman, come alongside a younger woman and say, \u201cHere are some things you can do to help get control over your tongue\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019m having to counsel myself about this <em>every day<\/em>; because I use words a lot in speaking and in writing. Scripture says in Proverbs, \u201cWhere there are many words, sin is not lacking.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I have to ask myself\u2014hopefully before I say it \/ before I write it\u2014\u201cIs this true?\u201d \u201cDo I know that it\u2019s true?\u201d \u201cOkay; it\u2019s true. Is it kind?\u201d \u201cWell, is it necessary?\u201d \u201cAm I just saying, \u2018I have to fill the space with these words\u2019? Is the Holy Spirit prompting me to say this?\u201d \u201cCan I just have the humility of being quiet?\u2014of not saying what I know?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And maybe asking the question, \u201cWhat\u2019s the purpose of sharing this information with this other person?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, you couch it in a prayer: \u201cPlease pray for this person; they have this struggle.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And what if we set out to have\u2014for our own selves and as we mentor and teach others\u2014if we said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cLook, the standard we\u2019re shooting for is that we have zero tolerance for words that don\u2019t meet the scriptural guidelines: \u2018Whatever is pure, whatever is kind, whatever is true\u2026\u2019 If we say, \u2018It\u2019s not that,\u2019 I\u2019m not going to say it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then sometimes we do say it. If we made a commitment that: \u201cWhen I have spoken out of turn\u2014I\u2019ve said something that\u2019s not true or that\u2019s not kind\u2014by God\u2019s grace, when the Spirit convicts me about it, I\u2019m going to go back and confess what I\u2019ve done. I\u2019m going to ask forgiveness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis happens in our marriage; I assume it happens in your marriages. There are times when you just say something quickly. You weren\u2019t guarded, and you weren\u2019t thinking, and you just\u2014I can see that my words wounded my husband\u2019s heart. Well, that happens. My husband has taught me a lot about just quick to\u2014he did this the other day\u2014came back and said: \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have said that. Please forgive me.\u201d That\u2019s been a great model for me, and I want to be a great model of that for him and for the women around me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had a younger woman come to you, awhile back. She had said things about a pastor that she was convicted, and she came and confessed that to you. How did you guys deal with it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Yes; and it had been a hard situation. The church\u2014there had been some things that had happened that, from her youthful vantage point, were really harmful to her family. She\u2019d gotten angry and she\u2019d said some things about the church and the pastor in the process. She came to see me in my apartment, and she was <em>so broken<\/em>. God\u2019s Spirit had been <em>dealing<\/em> with her; and she said: \u201cI\u2019ve been so wrong. I\u2019m <em>so sorry<\/em>. I want to deal with this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cDo you want to deal with it, like, right now? If I could get that pastor to come over here and speak with us right now, would you want to talk to him?\u201d She said, \u201cYes; I would.\u201d I called him and said: \u201cAny chance you could come over? There\u2019s a young woman who wants to talk to you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe dropped what he was doing\u2014he came over; she poured out her heart. It\u2019s a situation where she could have said: \u201cI\u2019m the offended one. I\u2019m the aggrieved party\u201d; but she humbled herself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said: \u201cI <em>never<\/em> should have said these things. I\u2019ve slandered you; I\u2019ve slandered this church. I\u2019m <em>so sorry<\/em>.\u201d She was sobbing\u2014she said, \u201cCould you please forgive me?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was so gracious, and he extended forgiveness\u2014he was pastoral with her. He responded to her humility. I watched God reconcile those hearts, right in my living room. It was a really sweet thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What you\u2019ve just illustrated is what James, Chapter 3, outlines. It talks about, in the whole chapter\u2014by the way, if parents are looking for a good devotional tonight to read at the dinner table and just apply what we\u2019re talking about, whether it\u2019s just a husband and a wife, or you and the kids, or you and the grandkids\u2014James, Chapter 3, talks about taming the tongue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That ought to be on your regular rotation. That should be in the top 40 countdown for your family. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>\u2014for all of us!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, we used to have our kids memorize\u2014what was the verse?\u2014\u201cDo all things without grumbling or disputing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; Philippians.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the chapter ends with this statement. Listen carefully\u2014it\u2019s a bit lengthy, but listen to what James advises us to do: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWho is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast, and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above; but it is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist there will be disorder and every vile practice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut listen to this conclusion: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, and sincere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then I love the conclusion\u2014what it says here: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSlander causes division.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wisdom from above brings healing and peace in relationships.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Those verses you just read from James, Chapter 3, are verses that someone, who is struggling with gossip or slander, could memorize \/ meditate on\u2014carry around in the flyleaf of their Bible and just pull it out and read it from time to time. Add Philippians 4:8 to that list of verses\u2014you know, \u201cWhatever is pure\u2026think on these things.\u201d First Corinthians 13 would be a good section to just meditate on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Ephesians 4: \u201cLet no unwholesome talk come out your mouth, but only that which ministers grace to the hearer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is not something that the Bible has just a few passages on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>The Book of Proverbs\u2014all the way through!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And part of the way we correct our behavior is by renewing our minds; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Yes; it\u2019s the Word of God that does that. That\u2019s why Paul says to Titus: \u201cOlder women, you\u2019re supposed to be an example of pure speech, not slandering, so that these younger women around you\u2014that you\u2019re investing in, you\u2019re setting the pace for them, you\u2019re leading the way, you\u2019re passing the baton on to them\u2014they can look at you; and they can see an example of a woman whose speech is gracious\u2014it\u2019s kind \/ it\u2019s true. They say, \u2018I want to be that way. How can I know Jesus and His Word in a way that will make me like that?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019ve seen this happen. I\u2019ve seen gatherings together, where there are younger women, who are passionate about this and that\u2014and they\u2019re saying: \u201cThis should be happening,\u201d and \u201cThat should be happening,\u201d and \u201cSo-and-so shouldn\u2019t do this,\u201d and \u201cBy the way, did you hear about this?\u201d I\u2019ve watched older women, who keep their tongue from evil and their lips from speaking guile. They just are at peace, and there\u2019s just a calm; and they kind of let some of the air get out of the balloon. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, after a while, somebody will turn to them and say, \u201cWell, what do you think?\u201d That\u2019s where they have an opportunity to step in and be the portrait of wisdom; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And I\u2019ve been that younger woman with an abundance of words and thoughts <em>many<\/em> times\u2014more times than I\u2019d like to admit\u2014but how I thank the Lord for putting wise, gracious women, who have a control on their tongues \/ the control of the Holy Spirit, who\u2019ve set an example \/ set a model. I\u2019ve said, \u201cThat\u2019s the kind of woman I want to be.\u201d\u00a0 Now, I want to set the pace\u2014now that I\u2019m an older woman\u2014set the pace for the younger women around me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I feel like we need to set up a conviction hotline, where women can call right now\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and confess? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to ask Barbara\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014some men too \/ maybe too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to ask Barbara: \u201cWhat older woman had the most impact in your life, as you reflect back around what we\u2019re talking about here, just being an older woman who measured her words very carefully and who modeled what Nancy\u2019s talking about?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, this wasn\u2019t someone that I had regular contact with, but one of my mentors was Elisabeth Elliot. She was always very wise in what she said. She was always measured in her responses.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>No unnecessary words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>She was not the kind of woman who would just prattle on and on and on. That example I admired\u2014of course, I admired pretty much everything she said\u2014read everything she wrote.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>But that\u2019s because she was careful with her words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>She was careful with her words\u2014she was. And there were others, too; but that\u2019s the one that pops into my head as being a role model in many, many ways; and that was one of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I think I\u2019ll challenge our listeners\u2014both male and female\u2014who has a same-sex friend, who\u2019s a bit, maybe, older than you in the race of life \/ who you can spend a little time with, and maybe talk about issues like this. Ask them how they handle it; ask them how they process their own temptations to prattle on, as you described, Sweetheart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think every person needs a mentor. It may not be someone that you do, as Barbara said, who you do meet, face to face, with every week \/ every month; but it may be somebody whose writings have a great impact upon your life. At this point, I just brag on Barbara\u2019s blog. They can look at you and they can see an example of a woman whose speech is gracious, it\u2019s kind, it\u2019s true. They say, \u2018I want to be that way. Welcome back to you as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Thank you, Dennis; and congratulations to you all for 45 years!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Thanks!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Nancy leads a ministry called <em>Revive Our Hearts<\/em>, and the <em>True Woman<\/em> movement, and has written a book called <em>Adorned<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh wait, wait, wait\u2014where\u2019s the prayer request or the gossip?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m getting ready to go there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014because Nancy talks about some characteristics of women and what they ought to be like today. She just comes out of Titus, Chapter 2. One of the first things that\u2019s mentioned in the book is gossip and slander. Nancy, it\u2019s relevant for all people; but do you think it is especially relevant for women?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Could I say it\u2019s particularly addressed, in Titus 2, to older women? You know, I\u2019m an older woman. I was actually a younger woman when I started writing this book. It took so long that, in the process, I became an older woman. [Laughter] I was single when I started; I ended up married before I finished this book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI take seriously this thing about slander. Now, Scripture talks about slander for men, for women, for every age group\u2014using our tongues in ways that destroy, and hurt, and wound rather than heal and encourage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut Paul specifically says, in Titus 2, here that \u201colder women are to be reverent in behavior.\u201d Then, the first example he gives of what that looks like \/ what that means is they are not to be slanderers. I pondered this passage a lot. I thought: \u201cYou know, what were the old women doing in this church that he was writing to? Were they just talking too much?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, maybe\u2014they\u2019ve raised their children; they were in a season of life where maybe they were just letting down their guard a little bit and relaxing. The women would get together and they would chatter. It might have been under the guise of sharing prayer requests; but Paul says, \u201cIf you\u2019re going to have the impact Christ wants you to have for the gospel, if you\u2019re going to be the kind of woman that younger women can find as an example of how to love and follow Christ, the first thing you have to do is watch your tongue.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cControl it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to know what you found out about the word, \u201cslander\u201d; because if you\u2019ve been thinking about it for a few years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>I have been thinking about it a lot. It\u2019s a little scary thing; because most of the times, when that word\u2014the Greek word that\u2019s translated \u201cslanderer\u201d\u2014it\u2019s the word, <em>diabolos<\/em> [\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf]; devil; diabolical. Almost every time when that word is used in the New Testament, it refers to the devil.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014who is the father of lies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>\u2014who\u2019s the father of lies, and he uses words to deceive. He slanders <em>us<\/em> to God\u2014he\u2019s the accuser of the brethren. He slanders God to <em>us<\/em>\u2014makes us think that God is not good; God is not kind; God is not gracious. And then, when <em>we<\/em> speak words\u2014that are untrue, that are hurtful, that wound, that destroy people\u2014we are actually playing the part of the devil\u2014we\u2019re fulfilling his agenda; we\u2019re acting as his agents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I realized that, I thought: \u201cWow! This is not a <em>small<\/em> thing!\u201d\u2014just one word here: \u201cnot slanderers\u201d\u2014but it\u2019s a big concept.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And can we just make it clear that slander doesn\u2019t have to come through the mouth?\u2014it can come through the fingers on the keyboard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>There\u2019s a lot of it going on on the internet, and it\u2019s so easy to do. You see something you don\u2019t agree with\u2014you can comment. It can happen on Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> \/ on Twitter. There\u2019s a <em>lot<\/em> of slander that goes on, including among those of us who are Christians.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I think people think it\u2019s safer; because they\u2019re not doing it to someone\u2019s face. I think men and women <em>both<\/em> say things online\/on screens that they shouldn\u2019t, because it <em>feels<\/em> more removed and more distant\u2014and: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t dare say this to your face, but I might feel like repeating it to someone else.\u201d I think it\u2019s exploded\u2014of course, talking, and ridicule, and all kinds of things that are unhealthy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>I saw a really sad tweet the other day from someone that we all know\u2014she\u2019s the daughter of a well-known Christian leader. The leader has been slandered a lot in the Christian press recently for something that he has stood for\u2014it is truth, but he\u2019s been slammed for it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis college-aged\/recent college graduate daughter wrote a tweet and said, \u201cSometimes when people rant about other people on the internet, they forget that those people have family; and that the family members see what\u2019s written, and it can be really hurtful.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy heart just went out to this young woman. Her dad is a godly man, and she knows that; but still she\u2019s reading and seeing what people are saying, who have this theological nuance difference with her dad. They\u2019re not being <em>careful<\/em> in their words. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when I write things \/ when I say things, one of the thoughts I try to have is, \u201cWould I say this this way \/ would I write this this way if the person that I\u2019m talking about were here in the room?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cor I knew that person would be reading it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I saw the tweet you\u2019re talking about. I saw her brother chime in and say, \u201cLittle sister speaks truth.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, there\u2019s a lot of damage that can come from slander. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara, I\u2019m just curious\u2014Nancy talks about this being directed toward older women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we grow older, we\u2019re supposed to be growing more godly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014wiser.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; have you found sins of the tongue, like slander and gossip, have been harder to control as you\u2019ve gotten older; or has your growth in grace given you a check against those?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You know, that\u2019s a really good question. Maybe I should ask my husband. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you know what? I was thinking about answering it for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, because Nancy first started talking about it, I was thinking, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t know that it\u2026\u201d\u2014again, I haven\u2019t studied this like you have; but I think it\u2019s a temptation for women of <em>all<\/em> ages. I know\u2014when I was younger, and my kids were in school, and I would be talking to other mothers\u2014that\u2019s when I remember feeling that kind of thing; because one mother would be talking about how her child made straight \u201cA\u201ds and mine hadn\u2019t. You know, there\u2019s that competitiveness with moms and kids. That\u2019s kind of where my brain was going. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know; what\u2019s your answer? I\u2019m anxious to hear what you have to say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just would have to say, Bob\u2014in answer to your question about \u201cHow has Barbara struggled with that?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I just don\u2019t recall Barbara saying unkind things about other people, or half-truths, or lies. If I share something in confidence with her, it\u2019s kept in confidence. She\u2019s a person of her word. She has other struggles in her life. She knows mine; I know hers. I wouldn\u2019t say slander would be one of the battles that you [Barbara] would be fighting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And that\u2019s the point of this passage\u2014is that, as Christian women, we\u2019re supposed to be examples of <em>not<\/em> slandering. The world slanders people, but we\u2019re not supposed to be that way. So, what you just said about Barbara\u2014every husband should be able to say about his Christian wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; she\u2019s a trustworthy person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>But I can identify with something you wrote in your book, and that is that you have a tendency to edit your husband. My weakness and struggle isn\u2019t so much with what I say about other people or repeating things; my struggle is more in my marriage, because I don\u2019t have my children to correct anymore and to help them eat right\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cUse your napkin,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t burp at the table,\u201d\u2014all that kind of stuff. That\u2019s all <em>over<\/em>. So, he gets <em>all<\/em> of my attention that used to be spread out between six children. He gets his own, plus their measure\u2014so that\u2019s where I struggle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But that\u2019s not slander.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s called \u201cBuilding up your husband.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I just had to tell Nancy that I understood. When I read that in her book, I went, \u201cOh yes; I\u2019m an editor too.\u201d Dennis would agree. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Nancy, why are we predisposed to want to slander and gossip? I mean, what\u2019s the appeal in doing that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Well, you know, \u201cThe devil made me do it,\u201d\u2014it is diabolical\u2014but <em>really<\/em>, doesn\u2019t it come down to a heart of pride?\u2014thinking that I want to exalt myself. I do that by putting down the other person. We\u2019re insecure \/ we\u2019re all insecure; so we want to make ourselves look better. To do that, we try to put other people down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt has the <em>exact<\/em> opposite effect\u2014we really destroy ourselves and our relationships when we use these biting, or sarcastic, or critical, or evil-speaking words of one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat power there is in words of grace\u2014words that minister healing, words that are true, words that build up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Those take the control of the Holy Spirit. Your natural flesh isn\u2019t going to say those lovely kind of words; but when the Spirit controls us, our words are going to be <em>powerfully<\/em> positive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, I\u2019ll tell you what the temptation is\u2014it\u2019s to be in the know\u2014I want to be in the know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>That\u2019s pride.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want some knowledge. I have knowledge about this person that I pass on, because that\u2019s <em>powerful<\/em>. That means: \u201cI know it; you don\u2019t,\u201d and I share this juicy morsel, which may not be the truth or maybe a half-truth. I think we all like\u2014we all like being the center of attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It can be the truth and still be gossip; right, Nancy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>It can be if it has a negative or hurtful effect\u2014if that\u2019s the intent\u2014is to harm, even if it\u2019s truthful. The Scripture\u2014this passage, says, \u201cDon\u2019t do that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you just said, Dennis\u2014if I could just have a moment of kind of mutual self-confession here\u2014don\u2019t you find that many times we, as Christian leaders, have that temptation, when we talk with each other, to be in the know? We heard something \/ we know something; we share something. We don\u2019t get a pass on this\u2014this is speaking to us as well. Just because we happen to hear what\u2019s going on in the Christian world\u2014and we, maybe, read some pieces or talked with somebody\u2014I think there\u2019s some care needed, whether you\u2019re a man or a woman \/ Christian leadership or not\u2014we can destroy or heal with our words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I totally agree with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if somebody is hearing this and they\u2019re going: \u201cOkay; I have some issues with my tongue. I lean into gossip; I lean into slander; I can be sharp-tongued. I posted something yesterday that I should go back and take down now,\u201d how do you counsel somebody? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do you, as an older woman, come alongside a younger woman and say, \u201cHere are some things you can do to help get control over your tongue\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019m having to counsel myself about this <em>every day<\/em>; because I use words a lot in speaking and in writing. Scripture says in Proverbs, \u201cWhere there are many words, sin is not lacking.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I have to ask myself\u2014hopefully before I say it \/ before I write it\u2014\u201cIs this true?\u201d \u201cDo I know that it\u2019s true?\u201d \u201cOkay; it\u2019s true. Is it kind?\u201d \u201cWell, is it necessary?\u201d \u201cAm I just saying, \u2018I have to fill the space with these words\u2019? Is the Holy Spirit prompting me to say this?\u201d \u201cCan I just have the humility of being quiet?\u2014of not saying what I know?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And maybe asking the question, \u201cWhat\u2019s the purpose of sharing this information with this other person?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, you couch it in a prayer: \u201cPlease pray for this person; they have this struggle.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And what if we set out to have\u2014for our own selves and as we mentor and teach others\u2014if we said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cLook, the standard we\u2019re shooting for is that we have zero tolerance for words that don\u2019t meet the scriptural guidelines: \u2018Whatever is pure, whatever is kind, whatever is true\u2026\u2019 If we say, \u2018It\u2019s not that,\u2019 I\u2019m not going to say it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then sometimes we do say it. If we made a commitment that: \u201cWhen I have spoken out of turn\u2014I\u2019ve said something that\u2019s not true or that\u2019s not kind\u2014by God\u2019s grace, when the Spirit convicts me about it, I\u2019m going to go back and confess what I\u2019ve done. I\u2019m going to ask forgiveness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis happens in our marriage; I assume it happens in your marriages. There are times when you just say something quickly. You weren\u2019t guarded, and you weren\u2019t thinking, and you just\u2014I can see that my words wounded my husband\u2019s heart. Well, that happens. My husband has taught me a lot about just quick to\u2014he did this the other day\u2014came back and said: \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have said that. Please forgive me.\u201d That\u2019s been a great model for me, and I want to be a great model of that for him and for the women around me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had a younger woman come to you, awhile back. She had said things about a pastor that she was convicted, and she came and confessed that to you. How did you guys deal with it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Yes; and it had been a hard situation. The church\u2014there had been some things that had happened that, from her youthful vantage point, were really harmful to her family. She\u2019d gotten angry and she\u2019d said some things about the church and the pastor in the process. She came to see me in my apartment, and she was <em>so broken<\/em>. God\u2019s Spirit had been <em>dealing<\/em> with her; and she said: \u201cI\u2019ve been so wrong. I\u2019m <em>so sorry<\/em>. I want to deal with this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cDo you want to deal with it, like, right now? If I could get that pastor to come over here and speak with us right now, would you want to talk to him?\u201d She said, \u201cYes; I would.\u201d I called him and said: \u201cAny chance you could come over? There\u2019s a young woman who wants to talk to you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe dropped what he was doing\u2014he came over; she poured out her heart. It\u2019s a situation where she could have said: \u201cI\u2019m the offended one. I\u2019m the aggrieved party\u201d; but she humbled herself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said: \u201cI <em>never<\/em> should have said these things. I\u2019ve slandered you; I\u2019ve slandered this church. I\u2019m <em>so sorry<\/em>.\u201d She was sobbing\u2014she said, \u201cCould you please forgive me?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was so gracious, and he extended forgiveness\u2014he was pastoral with her. He responded to her humility. I watched God reconcile those hearts, right in my living room. It was a really sweet thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What you\u2019ve just illustrated is what James, Chapter 3, outlines. It talks about, in the whole chapter\u2014by the way, if parents are looking for a good devotional tonight to read at the dinner table and just apply what we\u2019re talking about, whether it\u2019s just a husband and a wife, or you and the kids, or you and the grandkids\u2014James, Chapter 3, talks about taming the tongue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That ought to be on your regular rotation. That should be in the top 40 countdown for your family. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>\u2014for all of us!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, we used to have our kids memorize\u2014what was the verse?\u2014\u201cDo all things without grumbling or disputing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; Philippians.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the chapter ends with this statement. Listen carefully\u2014it\u2019s a bit lengthy, but listen to what James advises us to do: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWho is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast, and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above; but it is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist there will be disorder and every vile practice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut listen to this conclusion: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, and sincere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then I love the conclusion\u2014what it says here: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSlander causes division.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wisdom from above brings healing and peace in relationships.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Those verses you just read from James, Chapter 3, are verses that someone, who is struggling with gossip or slander, could memorize \/ meditate on\u2014carry around in the flyleaf of their Bible and just pull it out and read it from time to time. Add Philippians 4:8 to that list of verses\u2014you know, \u201cWhatever is pure\u2026think on these things.\u201d First Corinthians 13 would be a good section to just meditate on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Ephesians 4: \u201cLet no unwholesome talk come out your mouth, but only that which ministers grace to the hearer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is not something that the Bible has just a few passages on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>The Book of Proverbs\u2014all the way through!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And part of the way we correct our behavior is by renewing our minds; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Yes; it\u2019s the Word of God that does that. That\u2019s why Paul says to Titus: \u201cOlder women, you\u2019re supposed to be an example of pure speech, not slandering, so that these younger women around you\u2014that you\u2019re investing in, you\u2019re setting the pace for them, you\u2019re leading the way, you\u2019re passing the baton on to them\u2014they can look at you; and they can see an example of a woman whose speech is gracious\u2014it\u2019s kind \/ it\u2019s true. They say, \u2018I want to be that way. How can I know Jesus and His Word in a way that will make me like that?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019ve seen this happen. I\u2019ve seen gatherings together, where there are younger women, who are passionate about this and that\u2014and they\u2019re saying: \u201cThis should be happening,\u201d and \u201cThat should be happening,\u201d and \u201cSo-and-so shouldn\u2019t do this,\u201d and \u201cBy the way, did you hear about this?\u201d I\u2019ve watched older women, who keep their tongue from evil and their lips from speaking guile. They just are at peace, and there\u2019s just a calm; and they kind of let some of the air get out of the balloon. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, after a while, somebody will turn to them and say, \u201cWell, what do you think?\u201d That\u2019s where they have an opportunity to step in and be the portrait of wisdom; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And I\u2019ve been that younger woman with an abundance of words and thoughts <em>many<\/em> times\u2014more times than I\u2019d like to admit\u2014but how I thank the Lord for putting wise, gracious women, who have a control on their tongues \/ the control of the Holy Spirit, who\u2019ve set an example \/ set a model. I\u2019ve said, \u201cThat\u2019s the kind of woman I want to be.\u201d\u00a0 Now, I want to set the pace\u2014now that I\u2019m an older woman\u2014set the pace for the younger women around me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I feel like we need to set up a conviction hotline, where women can call right now\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and confess? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to ask Barbara\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014some men too \/ maybe too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to ask Barbara: \u201cWhat older woman had the most impact in your life, as you reflect back around what we\u2019re talking about here, just being an older woman who measured her words very carefully and who modeled what Nancy\u2019s talking about?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, this wasn\u2019t someone that I had regular contact with, but one of my mentors was Elisabeth Elliot. She was always very wise in what she said. She was always measured in her responses.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>No unnecessary words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>She was not the kind of woman who would just prattle on and on and on. That example I admired\u2014of course, I admired pretty much everything she said\u2014read everything she wrote.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>But that\u2019s because she was careful with her words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>She was careful with her words\u2014she was. And there were others, too; but that\u2019s the one that pops into my head as being a role model in many, many ways; and that was one of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I think I\u2019ll challenge our listeners\u2014both male and female\u2014who has a same-sex friend, who\u2019s a bit, maybe, older than you in the race of life \/ who you can spend a little time with, and maybe talk about issues like this. Ask them how they handle it; ask them how they process their own temptations to prattle on, as you described, Sweetheart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think every person needs a mentor. It may not be someone that you do, as Barbara said, who you do meet, face to face, with every week \/ every month; but it may be somebody whose writings have a great impact upon your life. At this point, I just brag on Barbara\u2019s blog. She has a blog that she writes, called <em>Ever Thine Home. <\/em>There are tens of thousands of women who are subscribing to that blog and just hearing her talk about some of the issues that she\u2019s dealing with, as an older woman. She\u2019s not old, but she is an <em>older<\/em> woman.
