Am I going to get her the teleportation device? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When 50 percent of her social life is going to be tied to whatever the new technology is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that\u2019s what you just said\u2014are you going to exclude her from 50 percent of her social life, or are you going to go with the new technology for her? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019ve started now\u2014already having these conversations of trying to think about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Shiloh was born, my mom bought an iPad<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. My mom, who doesn\u2019t like technology, bought an iPad\u2014amazing; right?\u2014because she could FaceTime because we live, you know, 12 hours apart. Guess what else she bought? She bought this kid\u2019s devotional book. So, all of a sudden, she can FaceTime; and she can use this very good but cursed thing and redeem it\u2014and have these <em>wonderful<\/em> connections with her granddaughter. I think the conversation that we will continually have with any piece of technology is \u201cWhat is it for?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, okay\u2014smartphones\u2014you can do a ton of incredible things with them; right? But if you can\u2019t interact with real people \/ if they cause us to miss out on the depth of relationship that our souls are made for and this great connection\u2014if we can\u2019t put it aside so we can have solitude with God\u2014I mean, these are some things that are really important to what it means to be human\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u2014then, I think the conversation is always going to be about \u201cWhat kind of boundaries?\u201d I mean, adults know how to self-regulate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re always learning\u2014that\u2019s one of the signs of adulthood: \u201cSo, how can we self-regulate?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019ve seen right now\u2014again, I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen five years from now\u2014what\u2019s the new technology? I\u2019m excited that Axis exists so that <em>I<\/em> can depend on it five years from now, but I\u2019ve seen great families have cell phone curfews at night. I\u2019ve seen great families who don\u2019t have phones in their bedrooms. I\u2019ve seen great families who treat the cell phone equally as far as like the dads have the same rules on their phones as they have for their kids. They invite that kind of accountability, but these are all higher principles, where they say, \u201cCommunity is better than isolation.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, are you going to get a phone for your daughter when she\u2019s 10\/11\/12? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Probably. This is what I\u2019m going to do that\u2019s going to be crazy \/ this is what I\u2019m going to do that people <em>hate<\/em>\u2014and this is what I <em>already<\/em> do for myself\u2014is I am going to limit its functionality. I\u2019m going to give her a phone that doesn\u2019t have the app store on it, that doesn\u2019t have free range on the internet on it, that doesn\u2019t have certain features on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, we\u2019re also going to talk about it and also know that: \u201cThis is Daddy\u2019s phone and not your phone; but really, it\u2019s not Daddy\u2019s phone. It\u2019s God\u2019s phone,\u201d So: \u201cAs this piece of technology\u2014that God owns \/ that He\u2019s allowed us to steward\u2014we want to honor Him with it, and we don\u2019t want to miss out on the good things in life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what I want our parents to know, who are listening here, is: \u201cYou\u2019re going to use that\u2019s phone\u2019s functionality to ground them, to take privileges away from them, where you can reduce functionality on the phone.\u201d Are you with me? \u201cIf you don\u2019t make your grades\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s a great opportunity for consequences\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m telling you\u2014it really is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014behavior consequences. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, Melanie, what about you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Melanie:<\/strong> If I ever have kids, I probably would get them a phone as well. I actually have\u2014right now, I have two nephews and two nieces. It\u2019s gotten me to start thinking very differently. Looking at those little ones, I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat is the world going to be like when they hit 10\/11\/12?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Melanie:<\/strong> They are so sweet and innocent right now. I want to protect them; but at the same time, I\u2019ve also seen the consequences of that protection gone too far in some of my friends\u2019 lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t do them any favors to pretend like the world we live in isn\u2019t the way it is; because, eventually, they are going to go out on their own. Eventually, they\u2019re going to have access. It might even be while they\u2019re 10\/11\/12, because all of their friends are going to have the phones. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Melanie:<\/strong> So, even if they don\u2019t have one, they are going to know how to use that device. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Which is <em>huge<\/em>\u2014because we\u2019ve talked about this: \u201cOh, you can put all these limits on it,\u201d and it\u2019s like: \u201cWhere do you see porn for the first time?\u201d \u201cI saw it on my friend\u2019s phone.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We have a tool, here, at FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> called <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. In that resource is a getaway\u2014a mother and a daughter before the daughter turns 13\/14 years old \/ and a father\/son getaway\u2014it\u2019s a Friday night \/ Saturday\u2014and a kit that the parent drives and the parent leads. The parent is the <em>hero<\/em> of the time with the child. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, one of the things we talk about in <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> is helping your children anticipate the issues they\u2019re going to face and decide, in advance, like Daniel did in the Old Testament, who made up his mind, in advance, he wouldn\u2019t defile himself with the king\u2019s food. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen he faced the choice, he was already 95 percent of the way there\u2014he had already decided what he was going to do. A lot of kids today really need their mothers and their fathers to be engaged and involved in their lives, helping them draw those boundaries in anticipation of drinking, drugs, maybe slipping off to a movie that they shouldn\u2019t go see\u2014helping them decide before the peer pressure hits. If you do that, you\u2019ll be ahead of the game with your kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> And always trying to cultivate their vision of what the good life and what the gospel is. So, when you\u2019re talking about drinking, and drugs, and sex\u2014that you are talking about how these are\u2014could be very good things that are cursed. It even sounds weird to say that, even about drugs; but you know, there are medicinal uses for drugs that are amazing\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u2014and you can use in the right context. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember when my wife had surgery, and they were like, \u201cHere is some cocaine.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat are you doing?!\u201d It\u2019s like topical cocaine, but it helped\u2014you know what I mean? So, there was a context for that. You always want to cultivate their <em>vision<\/em> so it\u2019s not just rules for rules\u2019 sake or boundaries for boundaries\u2019 sake; but \u201cWhat is the bigger picture of what we\u2019re missing out on?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just sitting here thinking about this principle of parenting, which is\u2014we live in a world where the flu is all around us; right? Now, you can say, \u201cI\u2019m going to deal with this by putting my child in an isolation chamber, where they will never be exposed to the flu; and I\u2019ll keep them safe that way.\u201d Well, that doesn\u2019t work for a life strategy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or you can figure out how to get the vaccine and how to give them a little bit of the flu\u2014and talk through it and work through it\u2014so that they are strong in the face of the flu. They are living in a flu-infested world; but they don\u2019t get the flu, because we\u2019ve taken the preventative measures. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a better strategy than just \u201cWe\u2019re not going to have the internet in our home,\u201d or \u201cWe\u2019re going to live in the woods,\u201d or \u201cWe\u2019re going to do the isolation chamber approach.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> And I think about\u2014this is a story about my mom\u2014good old Brenda Eaton\u2014and <em>Passport2Purity<\/em>; right?\u2014this idea of you\u2019ve got to have a sex talk with your kid. You can\u2019t just have <em>a<\/em> sex talk with your kid, because sex is a conversation that\u2019s happening in their life all the time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u2014in school and on their phones. So, it\u2019s not just one bird-and-the-bees talk. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> It\u2019s like this ongoing thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, my mom used to say this to me, as awkward as it was\u2014she went to some talk somewhere\u2014and she would say: \u201cI love you. I\u2019m proud of you, and I don\u2019t want you to have sex until you\u2019re married.\u201d [Laughter] So, here I am\u20147<sup>th<\/sup> grade, awkward David. Mom says: \u201cI love you. I\u2019m proud of you. I don\u2019t want you to have sex until you\u2019re married.\u201d So, it was just kind of part of the conversation\u2014she would sign birthday cards saying, \u201cI love you. I\u2019m proud of you\u2026\u201d\u2014you know? I knew what the \u201cfill in the blank\u201d was. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt kind of created this expectation \/ this hope. Maybe she could have said: \u201cAnd here is why; because I want you to have an <em>amazing<\/em> marriage someday. I want you to have something to really offer and appreciate the goodness of sexual intimacy, and procreation, and et cetera.\u201d I think she modeled that, as well, just with their marriage\u2014my parents loved each other <em>very deeply<\/em>\u2014but that ongoing conversation. There are so many things that are happening that\u2014you can\u2019t outsource that to some\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u2014favorite teacher, or a coach, or a youth pastor, or a [senior] pastor. They can all serve your family and support you in that. This radio show can do that; right?\u2014it\u2019s doing that [support role]; but there is <em>no one<\/em> like a mom or a dad who is going to have that one conversation that lasts a lifetime, Lord willing, with your kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I couldn\u2019t agree more. God did not give your children to the coach, to the Sunday school teacher, to the teacher at school. He gave your children to you, as Mom and Dad; and your assignment is a <em>great<\/em> privilege. I\u2019m telling you\u2014some of the most incredible conversations, today even, that I\u2019m having with our adult children\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014as you said\u2014started way back when they were little\u2014three\/four\/five\u2014building the relationship with them. It really is a great privilege. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the conversations I was thinking of was when our last daughter got married. I met with her fianc\u00e9e for six times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Ooh. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Six times?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Six times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u201cGet him!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was supposed to be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u201cGet him, Dad!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014six 60-minute conversations, and it was 90 minutes. One of them went two hours. It\u2019s driving our daughter crazy, wondering what I\u2019m saying to him. headset? Am I going to get her the teleportation device? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When 50 percent of her social life is going to be tied to whatever the new technology is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that\u2019s what you just said\u2014are you going to exclude her from 50 percent of her social life, or are you going to go with the new technology for her? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019ve started now\u2014already having these conversations of trying to think about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Shiloh was born, my mom bought an iPad<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. My mom, who doesn\u2019t like technology, bought an iPad\u2014amazing; right?\u2014because she could FaceTime because we live, you know, 12 hours apart. Guess what else she bought? She bought this kid\u2019s devotional book. So, all of a sudden, she can FaceTime; and she can use this very good but cursed thing and redeem it\u2014and have these <em>wonderful<\/em> connections with her granddaughter. I think the conversation that we will continually have with any piece of technology is \u201cWhat is it for?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, okay\u2014smartphones\u2014you can do a ton of incredible things with them; right? But if you can\u2019t interact with real people \/ if they cause us to miss out on the depth of relationship that our souls are made for and this great connection\u2014if we can\u2019t put it aside so we can have solitude with God\u2014I mean, these are some things that are really important to what it means to be human\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u2014then, I think the conversation is always going to be about \u201cWhat kind of boundaries?\u201d I mean, adults know how to self-regulate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re always learning\u2014that\u2019s one of the signs of adulthood: \u201cSo, how can we self-regulate?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019ve seen right now\u2014again, I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen five years from now\u2014what\u2019s the new technology? I\u2019m excited that Axis exists so that <em>I<\/em> can depend on it five years from now, but I\u2019ve seen great families have cell phone curfews at night. I\u2019ve seen great families who don\u2019t have phones in their bedrooms. I\u2019ve seen great families who treat the cell phone equally as far as like the dads have the same rules on their phones as they have for their kids. They invite that kind of accountability, but these are all higher principles, where they say, \u201cCommunity is better than isolation.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, are you going to get a phone for your daughter when she\u2019s 10\/11\/12? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Probably. This is what I\u2019m going to do that\u2019s going to be crazy \/ this is what I\u2019m going to do that people <em>hate<\/em>\u2014and this is what I <em>already<\/em> do for myself\u2014is I am going to limit its functionality. I\u2019m going to give her a phone that doesn\u2019t have the app store on it, that doesn\u2019t have free range on the internet on it, that doesn\u2019t have certain features on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, we\u2019re also going to talk about it and also know that: \u201cThis is Daddy\u2019s phone and not your phone; but really, it\u2019s not Daddy\u2019s phone. It\u2019s God\u2019s phone,\u201d So: \u201cAs this piece of technology\u2014that God owns \/ that He\u2019s allowed us to steward\u2014we want to honor Him with it, and we don\u2019t want to miss out on the good things in life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what I want our parents to know, who are listening here, is: \u201cYou\u2019re going to use that\u2019s phone\u2019s functionality to ground them, to take privileges away from them, where you can reduce functionality on the phone.\u201d Are you with me? \u201cIf you don\u2019t make your grades\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s a great opportunity for consequences\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m telling you\u2014it really is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014behavior consequences. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, Melanie, what about you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Melanie:<\/strong> If I ever have kids, I probably would get them a phone as well. I actually have\u2014right now, I have two nephews and two nieces. It\u2019s gotten me to start thinking very differently. Looking at those little ones, I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat is the world going to be like when they hit 10\/11\/12?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Melanie:<\/strong> They are so sweet and innocent right now. I want to protect them; but at the same time, I\u2019ve also seen the consequences of that protection gone too far in some of my friends\u2019 lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t do them any favors to pretend like the world we live in isn\u2019t the way it is; because, eventually, they are going to go out on their own. Eventually, they\u2019re going to have access. It might even be while they\u2019re 10\/11\/12, because all of their friends are going to have the phones. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Melanie:<\/strong> So, even if they don\u2019t have one, they are going to know how to use that device. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Which is <em>huge<\/em>\u2014because we\u2019ve talked about this: \u201cOh, you can put all these limits on it,\u201d and it\u2019s like: \u201cWhere do you see porn for the first time?\u201d \u201cI saw it on my friend\u2019s phone.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We have a tool, here, at FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> called <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. In that resource is a getaway\u2014a mother and a daughter before the daughter turns 13\/14 years old \/ and a father\/son getaway\u2014it\u2019s a Friday night \/ Saturday\u2014and a kit that the parent drives and the parent leads. The parent is the <em>hero<\/em> of the time with the child. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, one of the things we talk about in <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> is helping your children anticipate the issues they\u2019re going to face and decide, in advance, like Daniel did in the Old Testament, who made up his mind, in advance, he wouldn\u2019t defile himself with the king\u2019s food. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen he faced the choice, he was already 95 percent of the way there\u2014he had already decided what he was going to do. A lot of kids today really need their mothers and their fathers to be engaged and involved in their lives, helping them draw those boundaries in anticipation of drinking, drugs, maybe slipping off to a movie that they shouldn\u2019t go see\u2014helping them decide before the peer pressure hits. If you do that, you\u2019ll be ahead of the game with your kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> And always trying to cultivate their vision of what the good life and what the gospel is. So, when you\u2019re talking about drinking, and drugs, and sex\u2014that you are talking about how these are\u2014could be very good things that are cursed. It even sounds weird to say that, even about drugs; but you know, there are medicinal uses for drugs that are amazing\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u2014and you can use in the right context. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember when my wife had surgery, and they were like, \u201cHere is some cocaine.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat are you doing?!\u201d It\u2019s like topical cocaine, but it helped\u2014you know what I mean? So, there was a context for that. You always want to cultivate their <em>vision<\/em> so it\u2019s not just rules for rules\u2019 sake or boundaries for boundaries\u2019 sake; but \u201cWhat is the bigger picture of what we\u2019re missing out on?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just sitting here thinking about this principle of parenting, which is\u2014we live in a world where the flu is all around us; right? Now, you can say, \u201cI\u2019m going to deal with this by putting my child in an isolation chamber, where they will never be exposed to the flu; and I\u2019ll keep them safe that way.\u201d Well, that doesn\u2019t work for a life strategy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or you can figure out how to get the vaccine and how to give them a little bit of the flu\u2014and talk through it and work through it\u2014so that they are strong in the face of the flu. They are living in a flu-infested world; but they don\u2019t get the flu, because we\u2019ve taken the preventative measures. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a better strategy than just \u201cWe\u2019re not going to have the internet in our home,\u201d or \u201cWe\u2019re going to live in the woods,\u201d or \u201cWe\u2019re going to do the isolation chamber approach.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> And I think about\u2014this is a story about my mom\u2014good old Brenda Eaton\u2014and <em>Passport2Purity<\/em>; right?\u2014this idea of you\u2019ve got to have a sex talk with your kid. You can\u2019t just have <em>a<\/em> sex talk with your kid, because sex is a conversation that\u2019s happening in their life all the time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u2014in school and on their phones. So, it\u2019s not just one bird-and-the-bees talk. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> It\u2019s like this ongoing thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, my mom used to say this to me, as awkward as it was\u2014she went to some talk somewhere\u2014and she would say: \u201cI love you. I\u2019m proud of you, and I don\u2019t want you to have sex until you\u2019re married.\u201d [Laughter] So, here I am\u20147<sup>th<\/sup> grade, awkward David. Mom says: \u201cI love you. I\u2019m proud of you. I don\u2019t want you to have sex until you\u2019re married.\u201d So, it was just kind of part of the conversation\u2014she would sign birthday cards saying, \u201cI love you. I\u2019m proud of you\u2026\u201d\u2014you know? I knew what the \u201cfill in the blank\u201d was. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt kind of created this expectation \/ this hope. Maybe she could have said: \u201cAnd here is why; because I want you to have an <em>amazing<\/em> marriage someday. I want you to have something to really offer and appreciate the goodness of sexual intimacy, and procreation, and et cetera.\u201d I think she modeled that, as well, just with their marriage\u2014my parents loved each other <em>very deeply<\/em>\u2014but that ongoing conversation. There are so many things that are happening that\u2014you can\u2019t outsource that to some\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u2014favorite teacher, or a coach, or a youth pastor, or a [senior] pastor. They can all serve your family and support you in that. This radio show can do that; right?\u2014it\u2019s doing that [support role]; but there is <em>no one<\/em> like a mom or a dad who is going to have that one conversation that lasts a lifetime, Lord willing, with your kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I couldn\u2019t agree more. God did not give your children to the coach, to the Sunday school teacher, to the teacher at school. He gave your children to you, as Mom and Dad; and your assignment is a <em>great<\/em> privilege. I\u2019m telling you\u2014some of the most incredible conversations, today even, that I\u2019m having with our adult children\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014as you said\u2014started way back when they were little\u2014three\/four\/five\u2014building the relationship with them. It really is a great privilege. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the conversations I was thinking of was when our last daughter got married. I met with her fianc\u00e9e for six times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Ooh. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Six times?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Six times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u201cGet him!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was supposed to be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> \u201cGet him, Dad!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014six 60-minute conversations, and it was 90 minutes. One of them went two hours. It\u2019s driving our daughter crazy, wondering what I\u2019m saying to him. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m just telling you\u2014these conversations <em>mark<\/em> young people\u2019s lives in ways you\u2019ll <em>never<\/em> ever know. Assume your responsibility\u2014step into the fear, be courageous, and initiate conversations around the issues your children are facing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You talked about <em>Passport2Purity<\/em>. We had a dad tell us: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf I just had four or five experiences like this to go through with my kids, during the time that they\u2019re at home before they leave home as teenagers, I\u2019d be farther ahead than most dads are.\u201d So, we have created, now, <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> and <em>Passport2Identity<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.
