It\u2019s always good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> In case our listeners don\u2019t know, Robert is\u2014he is my agent \/ book agent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And he heads up an agency for more than 100 authors; is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> More than 200.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I thought you were going to say, \u201c\u2026100 years.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> I shouldn\u2019t have said that. I should have said, \u201cWe have <em>two<\/em> clients: you and Barbara,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what I should have said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You should have said that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> I missed an opportunity. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Your bio needs to be updated just a little bit. But it does have the fact that you\u2019re married to Nancy\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014since 2015.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And because of Robert\u2019s unique background of having been married to Bobbie for 44 years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> \u2014forty-four-and-a-half.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014forty-four-and-a-half years\u2014Nancy married into and created a blended family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, Robert, you and I were having a conversation in the early days of\u2014do we call it your courtship with Nancy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Sure, let\u2019s do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You and Nancy had been communicating about the possibility of a relationship developing for maybe a month-and-a-half when you and I were chatting. I said, \u201cIf this is going somewhere, you ought to get some time with Ron Deal; because you\u2019re forming a blended family. Ron\u2019s the guy who can help you navigate those waters.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> If you googled \u201cspectacular advice,\u201d that\u2019s what would show up. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014Ron\u2019s picture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Nancy, you would never have thought that\u2014due to your Dad passing away, way too young\u2014he was a great man \/ heaven had a great gain, but the earth had a great loss when your dad passed away\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014that Bob Lepine would become a surrogate father, forcing Robert\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t just me! You were in on this, too, buddy!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was kind of a family event, here, at FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> It was!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You introduced him to Ron Deal, and Ron spent some time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014some time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014some time. How much time, Robert?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Six weeks, night and day. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> We just skimmed the surface. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> We just got started!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cThis couple needed <em>a lot <\/em>of help!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There was a hymn, when you guys were courting,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that was kind of the hymn that defined your courtship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> It became our song. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> You know, couples have \u201cour song.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your song was?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> \u201cSavior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care,\u201d\u2014that was it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, were you meditating on what ultimately became a book called <em>Like the Shepherd<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> No; I can\u2019t say that I was; but as our courtship developed, and as we got engaged and then married, that image of a shepherd found its way into our texts, late at night. So, early in our marriage, I said, \u201cI think it would be fun to write that book.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> Well, I have to share with you that, in one of our very earliest conversations, Robert was talking about his wife, Bobbie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019d been married for all of those years; and he said, \u201cOne of the things I loved about being married was I loved shepherding a wife.\u201d I had never heard a man describe his calling as a husband that way. I mean, I knew it was true; but I\u2019m thinking, \u201cHe didn\u2019t talk about loving what she did for him, or what she meant to him, or how he felt because he was married to her.\u201d He said, \u201cI loved shepherding a wife.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And we haven\u2019t mentioned what terminated that marriage of 44 years, but it was cancer. You became his wife, obviously, after that courtship and Bob bringing you together and blessing your relationship. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s my question for you, Nancy. You\u2019ve been married since 2015\u2014now, that\u2019s not a long time yet\u2014but what would be the best advice you could give a man, right now, in being the shepherd of his wife?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019m no expert on this subject now, and probably never will be; but I would just say, from my heart, that one of the things in our marriage that has been so precious\u2014and I\u2019ve said to Robert, \u201cIf other men would do more of this, they can\u2019t imagine how much it would mean to their wives,\u201d\u2014and that is that he keeps pursuing my heart. He\u2019s being <em>intentional<\/em> about listening\u2014about asking questions \/ about conversation. We don\u2019t rush through dinner. Now, I know some families have to; but we\u2019re in a season of life where we can just stop after dinner and <em>talk<\/em> about our day. He\u2019s asking me to unpack: \u201cWhat do you think about this? How did that make you feel?\u201d He\u2019s a much better conversationalist than I am!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo he keeps pursuing me. He <em>notices<\/em>\u2014he hears what I say; he cares about it; he asks me about it. I said to Robert, \u201cI think women would be <em>amazingly<\/em> more responsive, than many are, if their husbands would keep pursuing their hearts,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not in aggressive or controlling ways, but just in gentle and tender ways\u2014that\u2019s shepherding! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Here\u2019s a word picture that could be problematic, let\u2019s say, for some women. The first story that Jesus told in Luke 15 was the wandering sheep. And so, not only does the image of a sheep sometimes become problematic, for a woman to say: \u201cOh, I see! So you\u2019re the shepherd, and I\u2019m this dirty sheep!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> But the sheep wandered off, and the shepherd lovingly pursued that sheep. In my experience with Nancy, I\u2019m discovering \/ I discovered, early on, she\u2019s a person with lots of responsibility in ministry. We\u2019ll have this dinner time; and we\u2019ll be sitting there, enjoying dinner. I\u2019m looking at her face, and she has wandered off. I want you to hear me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014she\u2019s thinking about this conference coming up; she\u2019s thinking about this book deadline; she\u2019s thinking about another recording session. She\u2019s not there \/ she\u2019s not there with me\u2014she\u2019s wandered off: \u201cWhat do I do to bring her back? What do I do to capture her?\u201d It is patience, and it\u2019s warming\u2014it\u2019s wooing her\u2014it\u2019s not forgetting to woo her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell the story in the book\u2014this is a book for men\u2014so, sometimes, a woman will read it and go: \u201cWait a minute! Are you calling me a sheep?!\u201d \u201cAre you calling me a 150-pound marlin?\u201d But the image is\u2014the guy\u2019s going fishing. When he\u2019s out there, he realizes he\u2019s only got 15-pound test line; and he\u2019s going for a 150-pound fish. He\u2019s going to have to get the fish in the ship without breaking the line\u2014that\u2019s called \u201cwooing\u201d\/ that\u2019s called \u201cromancing.\u201d That\u2019s understanding that she has to <em>want<\/em> to respond to you\u2014you can\u2019t force it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m thinking, as you\u2019re talking, about 1 Peter, Chapter 3, verse 7: \u201cHusbands, live with your wives in an understanding way.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis has said, for years, that a husband\u2019s assignment is to become a student of his wife and to know her better than any human being knows her. You\u2019re talking about this being a diligent pursuit for a man; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s right\u2014it\u2019s Deuteronomy 24. I don\u2019t have to become an expert on <em>all<\/em> women\u2014I have to become an expert on <em>one <\/em>woman. The admonition there was to take a year off of work and get good at this. Don\u2019t be overwhelmed by <em>all<\/em> women; just study this <em>one<\/em> woman and become an expert at her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As you were talking, I was thinking\u2014to that point about being the expert of one woman\u2014if we\u2019re going to learn how to be a shepherd, we ought to study the greatest shepherd who\u2019s ever existed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s described in, probably, one of the most familiar passages in the Bible\u2014Psalm 23. I\u2019ll not read it all, but just think about this\u2014especially the guys who are married\u2014think about this in light of your wife: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThe Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His Name\u2019s sake.\u201d Then it goes on to talk about how He guides us through the valley of the shadow of death; so He shepherds us when we go through trials\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and life\u2019s full of trials. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And Robert, you had spent four-and-a-half decades being the shepherd of Bobbie\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014making it your life\u2019s goal to know her better than any person on earth. Then, all of a sudden, you\u2019ve got to turn around and start from scratch. What was that like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> question; because Nancy\u2019s very, very different than Bobbie. So, I couldn\u2019t use the old playbook; I had to start again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the lovely thing is\u2014I married a woman of grace, and I married a grown-up\u2014[Laughter]\u2014who doesn\u2019t overreact to stuff \/ doesn\u2019t get carried away; is very deliberate\/very measured. In fact, early on\u2014we were dating, Honey\u2014when I said, \u201cWhat do you think our first fight is going to be about?\u201d She got this quizzical look on her face. I think she said, \u201cWhat do you mean \u2018fight\u2019?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I don\u2019t want for this to be off-putting for couples who do fight; but we don\u2019t fight. I think part of it is our age. When you\u2019re young and married, and you\u2019ve got a lot of stuff\u2014you\u2019ve got a lot of your own stuff to work out\u2014sometimes that looks like conflict in your marriage. You\u2019re kind of\u2014you\u2019re working it out in the presence of somebody else. But if, at 67, I don\u2019t know who I am; and Nancy, at 57, doesn\u2019t know who she is, we\u2019re in trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You disagree?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Oh, like crazy!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> I was going to say\u2014it\u2019s not that we don\u2019t have disagreements\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> No; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> \u2014but that we talk about those things; we pray about those things; and we defer to each other\u2014and to really want to honor the other, to make allowances, to try and understand the other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> These are things that are\u2014they are people skills that you develop, as you walk with the Lord over a course of years,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> \u2014we\u2019re applying, now, in the context of our marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Ron, I want to ask <em>you<\/em> to comment on what Robert talked about\u2014not being able to use the old playbook and just do with Nancy what he\u2019d done with Bobbie. When it\u2019s a blended marriage, husbands and wives have to learn, \u201cWe can\u2019t just go back into our old patterns, because we\u2019ve got new people here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Right. And here\u2019s the thing\u2014you don\u2019t even realize it\u2019s a pattern until you find yourself in a situation where the other person doesn\u2019t respond the way you would maybe predict or assume. All of a sudden, you\u2019re feeling something you\u2019ve never felt before and: \u201cHmmm, this is foreign territory,\u201d\u2014not necessarily familiar territory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where you begin to <em>unlearn<\/em> how you shepherded Bobbie\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014and what a beautiful thing that that was! Comment on discovering and what it requires of you, as a husband\/as a shepherd, to have the openness to discover that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Well, first, I had to <em>want <\/em>to do that\u2014you know, your actions follow your desires\/your heart. So I wanted to because I pursued her\u2014I wooed her \/ I wanted to win her heart. I was intentional about being careful, being deliberate, being patient, being gentle\u2014all of those things. That was my desire, so I did those things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tActually, I see that looking back, that really wasn\u2019t the playbook. This isn\u2019t\u2014we\u2019re dealing with somebody with a will of her own. I do talk about the difference between riding a motorcycle and riding a horse\u2014\u201cHow is this for man talk?\u201d\u2014right?! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA motorcycle is predictable\u2014you get on; you twist your wrist; and then, you\u2019re off. The motorcycle has no will of its own. A horse does. I know, from experience, that you can wind up in the ditch [Laughter] if the horse decides he doesn\u2019t want to take you where you think you want him to go. That\u2019s the difference! So you have to romance \/ you have to woo\u2014you have to get that fish onboard without breaking the line. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy favorite Aesop\u2019s fable is the sun and the wind\u2014the argument that they have. The sun and the wind are having an argument to see who\u2019s the strongest. They see a man walking with a cloak on. The wind goes first, because he\u2019s sure that he\u2019s the stronger. He says, \u201cI bet I can get that guy to take his coat off.\u201d He blows and blows and blows\u2014harder, harder, harder. The harder he blows the wind, the tighter the man clings to his coat; so, he runs out of air. Then the sun says, \u201cNow it\u2019s my turn.\u201d He warms the man, and he takes his coat off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s really the magic, I think, that I would love husbands to pick up in this book\u2014that you woo your wife\u2014you romance her \/ you warm her. Then, she <em>wants<\/em> to please you; she doesn\u2019t do it out of obligation. She <em>wants<\/em> to please you\u2014she wants to be your lover, your wife, your companion, your partner, your friend. We text each other, early in the morning: \u201cI love you, my shepherd friend,\u201d is what Nancy responds, almost every morning, to my early texts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you\u2019re not just talking about a guy listening and saying: \u201cOkay; I\u2019ll buy flowers when I go home tonight,\u201d and do that. \u201cI guess I\u2019m supposed to show a little romance here.\u201d You\u2019re talking about a nurturing kind of relationship that involves a whole lot more than just a trip to the grocery store and a few dollars.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Yes, a lot more; it sure does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> Although a trip to the grocery store every once in a while can really help! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you pick up on that, shepherd?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s right! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you know, it\u2019s interesting because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> He\u2019s great at that, let me just say!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> \u2014typically, men conquer; right? Women romance\u2014women understand that. But Nancy <em>conquers<\/em> at the grocery store\u2014you should see it; it is amazing! It\u2019s amazing. But I do that if it\u2019s going to help her \/ if it\u2019s going to save her some time: \u201cIt\u2019s my pleasure.\u201d I say that a lot\u2014\u201c\u2026my pleasure!\u201d\u2014Chick-fil-A<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> got it right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; they did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to go back to Ron, though; because I don\u2019t think we truly touched on how the blended family dynamic impacts what we\u2019re talking about here. What\u2019s the best coaching you can give a husband, who\u2019s in a blended family relationship, which will throw some curveballs at that relationship?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes; yes. For example, one of the dynamics here is\u2014it\u2019s not just about you wooing your wife. In many blended family situations, your kids are watching\u2014they\u2019re going: \u201cWait a minute! You didn\u2019t do that with Mom,\u201d or \u201cIt was different with Mom,\u201d or \u201cDad, you were a different person with her.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s this sense that you can see yourself through the eyes of your kids. That adds another dynamic to, \u201cHow do I approach my wife?\u201d \u201c\u2026pursue my wife?\u201d \/ \u201c\u2026shepherd my wife?\u201d and yet, have this awareness that the children are thinking this as odd or strange. Or maybe they\u2019re even <em>jealous<\/em> of what you\u2019re doing now with wife number two versus the mother of the kids. It adds a level of complexity to how this shepherding process takes place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRobert\u2019s nailing it, in terms of the heart and the willingness of the husband <em>to<\/em> shepherd \/ <em>to<\/em> pursue. It\u2019s just being done with a larger crowd of people watching. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Robert, did you ever have a tinge of guilt?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> There could have been if the following hadn\u2019t taken place\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014two months before Bobbie stepped into heaven, she told two friends that she wants Robert to marry Nancy Leigh DeMoss. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t tell you that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> No; she did not. So, two months after we were dating, those two friends sent me an email\u2014each\u2014and said, \u201cWe think you ought to know something.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m probably the exception. I would understand, totally, how you would sort of second-guess your heart; because after almost 45 years of devotion to one person, and then, suddenly, you\u2019re shifting gears, without ruining your transmission\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> \u2014that would be a huge challenge. For us, that was <em>tremendous<\/em> release. It sort of gave me permission \/ it sort of <em>blessed<\/em> our relationship. I didn\u2019t feel obligation because Bobbie had said that, because I was already falling in love with this woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> And this was something you and Bobbie had talked about a lot, in terms of you getting remarried.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> She knew that she was terminal. You and she had this conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe loved you, and really wanted what was best for you, and gave you that gift of saying, \u201cI want you to get remarried.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Yes; huge! Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And, Ron, that\u2019s an unusual situation; because in a divorce, you don\u2019t get a blessing to go marry somebody else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And even with the death of a spouse, you don\u2019t always get that release that Bobbie gave to Robert.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> That was a huge gift on Bobbie\u2019s part\u2014just an amazing act of grace out of her spirit, for sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the same time, though, you have to relearn. You have to unlearn some of the things of the past, and relearn, and discover. The shepherd heart that Robert is talking about is what makes the difference. It\u2019s fine that you had permission; right? \u201cOkay; I feel like I can turn that corner,\u201d but you still have to ride the horse \/ you still have to discover the territory. You still have to figure out how to work, as a team, and come together and: \u201cWhat is it about <em>this<\/em> woman who needs you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u201cWhat is your place and your role in leading her?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I\u2019m just reflecting on all that we\u2019ve talked about here today. I just come back to two words in Ephesians, Chapter 5. The husband is commanded to love his wife, and there\u2019s actually an allusion in the passage that I\u2019m about to quote that goes back to how Christ loves the church. He uses two words\u2014He says He nourishes and cherishes it. \u201cNourish\u201d means to cause to grow\u2014to bring the nutrients to the life. A smart shepherd knows how to lead the sheep where the green fields are, not where the danger is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second word is to \u201ccherish\u201d; that means \u201cto soften.\u201d This speaks to the heart of what a shepherd needs to be pursuing, where he\u2019s causing the heart to grow soft to receive his leadership\u2014to receive the Scriptures \/ to grow spiritually\u2014I think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s a challenging assignment. I can tell you\u2014I\u2019ve been in God\u2019s school of being a husband for 45 years; and I\u2019m astounded at how much there is, still, to learn in the process.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And every husband who signs up for the responsibility ought to be signing up to be a life-long lover, a life-long learner, a life-long leader, and to get the kind of coaching he\u2019s going to <em>need<\/em> to pull that off\u2014the kind of coaching that Robert provides in the book, <em>Like the Shepherd<\/em>, which is a book that we\u2019ve got in our <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Resource Center. It\u2019s always good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> In case our listeners don\u2019t know, Robert is\u2014he is my agent \/ book agent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And he heads up an agency for more than 100 authors; is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> More than 200.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I thought you were going to say, \u201c\u2026100 years.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> I shouldn\u2019t have said that. I should have said, \u201cWe have <em>two<\/em> clients: you and Barbara,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s what I should have said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You should have said that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> I missed an opportunity. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Your bio needs to be updated just a little bit. But it does have the fact that you\u2019re married to Nancy\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014since 2015.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And because of Robert\u2019s unique background of having been married to Bobbie for 44 years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> \u2014forty-four-and-a-half.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014forty-four-and-a-half years\u2014Nancy married into and created a blended family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, Robert, you and I were having a conversation in the early days of\u2014do we call it your courtship with Nancy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Sure, let\u2019s do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You and Nancy had been communicating about the possibility of a relationship developing for maybe a month-and-a-half when you and I were chatting. I said, \u201cIf this is going somewhere, you ought to get some time with Ron Deal; because you\u2019re forming a blended family. Ron\u2019s the guy who can help you navigate those waters.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> If you googled \u201cspectacular advice,\u201d that\u2019s what would show up. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014Ron\u2019s picture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Nancy, you would never have thought that\u2014due to your Dad passing away, way too young\u2014he was a great man \/ heaven had a great gain, but the earth had a great loss when your dad passed away\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014that Bob Lepine would become a surrogate father, forcing Robert\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t just me! You were in on this, too, buddy!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was kind of a family event, here, at FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> It was!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You introduced him to Ron Deal, and Ron spent some time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014some time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014some time. How much time, Robert?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Six weeks, night and day. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> We just skimmed the surface. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> We just got started!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cThis couple needed <em>a lot <\/em>of help!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There was a hymn, when you guys were courting,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that was kind of the hymn that defined your courtship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> It became our song. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> You know, couples have \u201cour song.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And your song was?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> \u201cSavior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care,\u201d\u2014that was it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, were you meditating on what ultimately became a book called <em>Like the Shepherd<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> No; I can\u2019t say that I was; but as our courtship developed, and as we got engaged and then married, that image of a shepherd found its way into our texts, late at night. So, early in our marriage, I said, \u201cI think it would be fun to write that book.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> Well, I have to share with you that, in one of our very earliest conversations, Robert was talking about his wife, Bobbie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019d been married for all of those years; and he said, \u201cOne of the things I loved about being married was I loved shepherding a wife.\u201d I had never heard a man describe his calling as a husband that way. I mean, I knew it was true; but I\u2019m thinking, \u201cHe didn\u2019t talk about loving what she did for him, or what she meant to him, or how he felt because he was married to her.\u201d He said, \u201cI loved shepherding a wife.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And we haven\u2019t mentioned what terminated that marriage of 44 years, but it was cancer. You became his wife, obviously, after that courtship and Bob bringing you together and blessing your relationship. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s my question for you, Nancy. You\u2019ve been married since 2015\u2014now, that\u2019s not a long time yet\u2014but what would be the best advice you could give a man, right now, in being the shepherd of his wife?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> Well, I\u2019m no expert on this subject now, and probably never will be; but I would just say, from my heart, that one of the things in our marriage that has been so precious\u2014and I\u2019ve said to Robert, \u201cIf other men would do more of this, they can\u2019t imagine how much it would mean to their wives,\u201d\u2014and that is that he keeps pursuing my heart. He\u2019s being <em>intentional<\/em> about listening\u2014about asking questions \/ about conversation. We don\u2019t rush through dinner. Now, I know some families have to; but we\u2019re in a season of life where we can just stop after dinner and <em>talk<\/em> about our day. He\u2019s asking me to unpack: \u201cWhat do you think about this? How did that make you feel?\u201d He\u2019s a much better conversationalist than I am!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo he keeps pursuing me. He <em>notices<\/em>\u2014he hears what I say; he cares about it; he asks me about it. I said to Robert, \u201cI think women would be <em>amazingly<\/em> more responsive, than many are, if their husbands would keep pursuing their hearts,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not in aggressive or controlling ways, but just in gentle and tender ways\u2014that\u2019s shepherding! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Here\u2019s a word picture that could be problematic, let\u2019s say, for some women. The first story that Jesus told in Luke 15 was the wandering sheep. And so, not only does the image of a sheep sometimes become problematic, for a woman to say: \u201cOh, I see! So you\u2019re the shepherd, and I\u2019m this dirty sheep!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> But the sheep wandered off, and the shepherd lovingly pursued that sheep. In my experience with Nancy, I\u2019m discovering \/ I discovered, early on, she\u2019s a person with lots of responsibility in ministry. We\u2019ll have this dinner time; and we\u2019ll be sitting there, enjoying dinner. I\u2019m looking at her face, and she has wandered off. I want you to hear me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014she\u2019s thinking about this conference coming up; she\u2019s thinking about this book deadline; she\u2019s thinking about another recording session. She\u2019s not there \/ she\u2019s not there with me\u2014she\u2019s wandered off: \u201cWhat do I do to bring her back? What do I do to capture her?\u201d It is patience, and it\u2019s warming\u2014it\u2019s wooing her\u2014it\u2019s not forgetting to woo her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell the story in the book\u2014this is a book for men\u2014so, sometimes, a woman will read it and go: \u201cWait a minute! Are you calling me a sheep?!\u201d \u201cAre you calling me a 150-pound marlin?\u201d But the image is\u2014the guy\u2019s going fishing. When he\u2019s out there, he realizes he\u2019s only got 15-pound test line; and he\u2019s going for a 150-pound fish. He\u2019s going to have to get the fish in the ship without breaking the line\u2014that\u2019s called \u201cwooing\u201d\/ that\u2019s called \u201cromancing.\u201d That\u2019s understanding that she has to <em>want<\/em> to respond to you\u2014you can\u2019t force it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m thinking, as you\u2019re talking, about 1 Peter, Chapter 3, verse 7: \u201cHusbands, live with your wives in an understanding way.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis has said, for years, that a husband\u2019s assignment is to become a student of his wife and to know her better than any human being knows her. You\u2019re talking about this being a diligent pursuit for a man; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s right\u2014it\u2019s Deuteronomy 24. I don\u2019t have to become an expert on <em>all<\/em> women\u2014I have to become an expert on <em>one <\/em>woman. The admonition there was to take a year off of work and get good at this. Don\u2019t be overwhelmed by <em>all<\/em> women; just study this <em>one<\/em> woman and become an expert at her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As you were talking, I was thinking\u2014to that point about being the expert of one woman\u2014if we\u2019re going to learn how to be a shepherd, we ought to study the greatest shepherd who\u2019s ever existed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s described in, probably, one of the most familiar passages in the Bible\u2014Psalm 23. I\u2019ll not read it all, but just think about this\u2014especially the guys who are married\u2014think about this in light of your wife: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThe Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His Name\u2019s sake.\u201d Then it goes on to talk about how He guides us through the valley of the shadow of death; so He shepherds us when we go through trials\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and life\u2019s full of trials. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And Robert, you had spent four-and-a-half decades being the shepherd of Bobbie\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014making it your life\u2019s goal to know her better than any person on earth. Then, all of a sudden, you\u2019ve got to turn around and start from scratch. What was that like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> question; because Nancy\u2019s very, very different than Bobbie. So, I couldn\u2019t use the old playbook; I had to start again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the lovely thing is\u2014I married a woman of grace, and I married a grown-up\u2014[Laughter]\u2014who doesn\u2019t overreact to stuff \/ doesn\u2019t get carried away; is very deliberate\/very measured. In fact, early on\u2014we were dating, Honey\u2014when I said, \u201cWhat do you think our first fight is going to be about?\u201d She got this quizzical look on her face. I think she said, \u201cWhat do you mean \u2018fight\u2019?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I don\u2019t want for this to be off-putting for couples who do fight; but we don\u2019t fight. I think part of it is our age. When you\u2019re young and married, and you\u2019ve got a lot of stuff\u2014you\u2019ve got a lot of your own stuff to work out\u2014sometimes that looks like conflict in your marriage. You\u2019re kind of\u2014you\u2019re working it out in the presence of somebody else. But if, at 67, I don\u2019t know who I am; and Nancy, at 57, doesn\u2019t know who she is, we\u2019re in trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You disagree?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Oh, like crazy!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> I was going to say\u2014it\u2019s not that we don\u2019t have disagreements\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> No; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> \u2014but that we talk about those things; we pray about those things; and we defer to each other\u2014and to really want to honor the other, to make allowances, to try and understand the other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> These are things that are\u2014they are people skills that you develop, as you walk with the Lord over a course of years,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> \u2014we\u2019re applying, now, in the context of our marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Ron, I want to ask <em>you<\/em> to comment on what Robert talked about\u2014not being able to use the old playbook and just do with Nancy what he\u2019d done with Bobbie. When it\u2019s a blended marriage, husbands and wives have to learn, \u201cWe can\u2019t just go back into our old patterns, because we\u2019ve got new people here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Right. And here\u2019s the thing\u2014you don\u2019t even realize it\u2019s a pattern until you find yourself in a situation where the other person doesn\u2019t respond the way you would maybe predict or assume. All of a sudden, you\u2019re feeling something you\u2019ve never felt before and: \u201cHmmm, this is foreign territory,\u201d\u2014not necessarily familiar territory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where you begin to <em>unlearn<\/em> how you shepherded Bobbie\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u2014and what a beautiful thing that that was! Comment on discovering and what it requires of you, as a husband\/as a shepherd, to have the openness to discover that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Well, first, I had to <em>want <\/em>to do that\u2014you know, your actions follow your desires\/your heart. So I wanted to because I pursued her\u2014I wooed her \/ I wanted to win her heart. I was intentional about being careful, being deliberate, being patient, being gentle\u2014all of those things. That was my desire, so I did those things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tActually, I see that looking back, that really wasn\u2019t the playbook. This isn\u2019t\u2014we\u2019re dealing with somebody with a will of her own. I do talk about the difference between riding a motorcycle and riding a horse\u2014\u201cHow is this for man talk?\u201d\u2014right?! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA motorcycle is predictable\u2014you get on; you twist your wrist; and then, you\u2019re off. The motorcycle has no will of its own. A horse does. I know, from experience, that you can wind up in the ditch [Laughter] if the horse decides he doesn\u2019t want to take you where you think you want him to go. That\u2019s the difference! So you have to romance \/ you have to woo\u2014you have to get that fish onboard without breaking the line. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy favorite Aesop\u2019s fable is the sun and the wind\u2014the argument that they have. The sun and the wind are having an argument to see who\u2019s the strongest. They see a man walking with a cloak on. The wind goes first, because he\u2019s sure that he\u2019s the stronger. He says, \u201cI bet I can get that guy to take his coat off.\u201d He blows and blows and blows\u2014harder, harder, harder. The harder he blows the wind, the tighter the man clings to his coat; so, he runs out of air. Then the sun says, \u201cNow it\u2019s my turn.\u201d He warms the man, and he takes his coat off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s really the magic, I think, that I would love husbands to pick up in this book\u2014that you woo your wife\u2014you romance her \/ you warm her. Then, she <em>wants<\/em> to please you; she doesn\u2019t do it out of obligation. She <em>wants<\/em> to please you\u2014she wants to be your lover, your wife, your companion, your partner, your friend. We text each other, early in the morning: \u201cI love you, my shepherd friend,\u201d is what Nancy responds, almost every morning, to my early texts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you\u2019re not just talking about a guy listening and saying: \u201cOkay; I\u2019ll buy flowers when I go home tonight,\u201d and do that. \u201cI guess I\u2019m supposed to show a little romance here.\u201d You\u2019re talking about a nurturing kind of relationship that involves a whole lot more than just a trip to the grocery store and a few dollars.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Yes, a lot more; it sure does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> Although a trip to the grocery store every once in a while can really help! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you pick up on that, shepherd?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> That\u2019s right! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you know, it\u2019s interesting because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> He\u2019s great at that, let me just say!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> \u2014typically, men conquer; right? Women romance\u2014women understand that. But Nancy <em>conquers<\/em> at the grocery store\u2014you should see it; it is amazing! It\u2019s amazing. But I do that if it\u2019s going to help her \/ if it\u2019s going to save her some time: \u201cIt\u2019s my pleasure.\u201d I say that a lot\u2014\u201c\u2026my pleasure!\u201d\u2014Chick-fil-A<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> got it right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; they did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to go back to Ron, though; because I don\u2019t think we truly touched on how the blended family dynamic impacts what we\u2019re talking about here. What\u2019s the best coaching you can give a husband, who\u2019s in a blended family relationship, which will throw some curveballs at that relationship?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Yes; yes. For example, one of the dynamics here is\u2014it\u2019s not just about you wooing your wife. In many blended family situations, your kids are watching\u2014they\u2019re going: \u201cWait a minute! You didn\u2019t do that with Mom,\u201d or \u201cIt was different with Mom,\u201d or \u201cDad, you were a different person with her.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s this sense that you can see yourself through the eyes of your kids. That adds another dynamic to, \u201cHow do I approach my wife?\u201d \u201c\u2026pursue my wife?\u201d \/ \u201c\u2026shepherd my wife?\u201d and yet, have this awareness that the children are thinking this as odd or strange. Or maybe they\u2019re even <em>jealous<\/em> of what you\u2019re doing now with wife number two versus the mother of the kids. It adds a level of complexity to how this shepherding process takes place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRobert\u2019s nailing it, in terms of the heart and the willingness of the husband <em>to<\/em> shepherd \/ <em>to<\/em> pursue. It\u2019s just being done with a larger crowd of people watching. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Robert, did you ever have a tinge of guilt?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> There could have been if the following hadn\u2019t taken place\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014two months before Bobbie stepped into heaven, she told two friends that she wants Robert to marry Nancy Leigh DeMoss. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t tell you that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> No; she did not. So, two months after we were dating, those two friends sent me an email\u2014each\u2014and said, \u201cWe think you ought to know something.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m probably the exception. I would understand, totally, how you would sort of second-guess your heart; because after almost 45 years of devotion to one person, and then, suddenly, you\u2019re shifting gears, without ruining your transmission\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> \u2014that would be a huge challenge. For us, that was <em>tremendous<\/em> release. It sort of gave me permission \/ it sort of <em>blessed<\/em> our relationship. I didn\u2019t feel obligation because Bobbie had said that, because I was already falling in love with this woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> And this was something you and Bobbie had talked about a lot, in terms of you getting remarried.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy:<\/strong> She knew that she was terminal. You and she had this conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe loved you, and really wanted what was best for you, and gave you that gift of saying, \u201cI want you to get remarried.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Yes; huge! Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And, Ron, that\u2019s an unusual situation; because in a divorce, you don\u2019t get a blessing to go marry somebody else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And even with the death of a spouse, you don\u2019t always get that release that Bobbie gave to Robert.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> That was a huge gift on Bobbie\u2019s part\u2014just an amazing act of grace out of her spirit, for sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the same time, though, you have to relearn. You have to unlearn some of the things of the past, and relearn, and discover. The shepherd heart that Robert is talking about is what makes the difference. It\u2019s fine that you had permission; right? \u201cOkay; I feel like I can turn that corner,\u201d but you still have to ride the horse \/ you still have to discover the territory. You still have to figure out how to work, as a team, and come together and: \u201cWhat is it about <em>this<\/em> woman who needs you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ron:<\/strong> \u201cWhat is your place and your role in leading her?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I\u2019m just reflecting on all that we\u2019ve talked about here today. I just come back to two words in Ephesians, Chapter 5. The husband is commanded to love his wife, and there\u2019s actually an allusion in the passage that I\u2019m about to quote that goes back to how Christ loves the church. He uses two words\u2014He says He nourishes and cherishes it. \u201cNourish\u201d means to cause to grow\u2014to bring the nutrients to the life. A smart shepherd knows how to lead the sheep where the green fields are, not where the danger is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second word is to \u201ccherish\u201d; that means \u201cto soften.\u201d This speaks to the heart of what a shepherd needs to be pursuing, where he\u2019s causing the heart to grow soft to receive his leadership\u2014to receive the Scriptures \/ to grow spiritually\u2014I think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s a challenging assignment. I can tell you\u2014I\u2019ve been in God\u2019s school of being a husband for 45 years; and I\u2019m astounded at how much there is, still, to learn in the process.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And every husband who signs up for the responsibility ought to be signing up to be a life-long lover, a life-long learner, a life-long leader, and to get the kind of coaching he\u2019s going to <em>need<\/em> to pull that off\u2014the kind of coaching that Robert provides in the book, <em>Like the Shepherd<\/em>, which is a book that we\u2019ve got in our <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Resource Center.
