Our host is Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe controller guy\u2014that\u2019s one thing that a single woman ought to be concerned about, but there are other red flags to be aware of. We\u2019ll talk more about those today with Deepak Reju. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. I\u2019m hoping as we\u2019ve been having this conversation this week about single women and why smart women settle, our goal here has not been, let\u2019s see how many single women\u2019s toes we can step on or how many wounds we can probe, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. I had a daughter who was single a good ways into her 30\u2019s. This is real. This is a hard thing when as a young lady wanted to be married and have a family, and they find themselves in their late 20\u2019s\u2014the average age of getting married now is 29 for men, 27 \u00bd for women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a reality, Bob, and we just need to talk frankly and honestly. We\u2019re doing that this week with Deepak Reju who is a pastor inside of the Beltway in Washington, D.C. at Capitol Hill Baptist Church. He\u2019s written a book called <em>She\u2019s Got the Wrong Guy<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs Bob hinted at a moment ago, it\u2019s subtitled, <em>Why Smart Women Settle<\/em>. <em>Settle<\/em>--it\u2019s really kind of a nasty word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> It is nasty word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Here\u2019s what I want to talk about today and I\u2019ve got a bonus round if you cover all three of these subjects. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to talk about commitment. What should a woman do if there\u2019s a guy she\u2019s dating and he won\u2019t pull the trigger? He won\u2019t define the relationship. Secondly, I want you to speak to women who may have been single so long they\u2019ve got a check list, and then third, what do you say to a 40-year-old woman who always thought she\u2019d be married and have a family and be experiencing family in her 40\u2019s and now she\u2019s <em>still <\/em>single. I want you to talk about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen a bonus round, I want you to talk about dating a controlling man, dating a jealous man,--\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> --dating an angry man. It would just be quick, Bob. I know what\u2019s in the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The book has got a lot of great stuff. He\u2019s got a lot of hours with counselling. How many people have you counselled over the past, what is it, 20 years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, 17 or 18 years I\u2019ve been counselling. I don\u2019t know, I do hundreds, thousands. You stop counting at some point and you just start welcoming the next person that walks through the door. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What do you say to a young lady who\u2019s dating a man who appears to be passive when it comes to making an all-in commitment called marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> The danger here is she actually works the relationship to force him to make a commitment. That\u2019s just not good because we want the guy to be really clear on his commitments. Let\u2019s take the classic example of a guy who actually works into the friendship and spends time with the girl, never defines the relationship, hangs out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHanging out turns out to be a lot of time together, seems like their dating and her friend comes to her and says, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cAre you guys a couple?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d She says, \u201cI don\u2019t know. He\u2019s never defined anything. I don\u2019t know what we\u2019re doing.\u201d She feels forced to then at some point say, \u201cOkay, what are we doing?\u201d He says, \u201cWell, we\u2019re spending time together. We\u2019re getting to know on another.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Organic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, it\u2019s organic-- [Laughter] --like vegetables. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve heard this lecture before. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> It perpetuates because she wants to have the relationship\u2014all her fears of getting married, her desire is to have children. Here\u2019s a guy who\u2019s spending time with her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve just got to step in to say a word to the guys who are listening. Here\u2019s why this is important: a young lady has these fears that Deepak talking about here, and the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tonly thing that\u2019s going to cast out the fears out of her heart is you showing the love of Jesus Christ in a commitment that begins to make a safe place for her to deal with those fears and to finally experience someone who is not going to reject her if they truly get to know her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Love is not some ambiguous feeling, but it\u2019s commitment. God has shown His commitment to us by sending His Son for us. God has shown us what faithfulness looks like in enduring with us in all the ways that we\u2019ve messed up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cThis is how we know what love is--\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> This is--exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>--\u201cJesus Christ laid down his life.\u201d So commitment and self sacrifice are at the core of what real love is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want to know\u2014I had a friend of mine who said, she was 30 years old, a guy started dating her. On the third date she said to him, \u201cHang on, you just need to know: we can keep going out; but six months from today this will either be headed toward the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\taltar or it will be over because that should be enough time for you to know what this relationship looks like. If six months from now you say, \u2018I don\u2019t think so,\u2019 okay, no harm, no foul. But I\u2019m going to call the question.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould you say that\u2019s a good strategy or not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> No, in the sense of her forcing a relationship on him. Yes, in the sense of, we need to teach the guys what God looks like in His faithfulness and commitment so that <em>they <\/em>understand what it means to be a man; and not put this on women who are struggling to figure out what\u2019s going on in the relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot enough pastors or mentors are teaching men what commitment looks like and actually letting men absorb the risk in the relationship by making clear what they\u2019re doing in the relationship by helping the gal understand, \u201cThis is exactly what I intend to do. This is exactly where we\u2019re at. This is exactly where I\u2019m leading us.\u201d So the girl never has to wonder. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I raised my sons telling them over and over again, \u201cIf you are taking the young woman out on a date, it should be with the idea in the back of your head, \u2018We may get married at some point.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If that\u2019s not in the back of your head\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> --then you shouldn\u2019t be doing it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> --you\u2019re defrauding her by suggesting as you go out together and have a fun evening. In the back of her mind is, \u201cIs this going somewhere.\u201d If that\u2019s to in the back of your mind, \u201cThis might be going somewhere,\u201d then you\u2019re being fraudulent with her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, for that single woman that\u2019s dating the guy whose ambiguous and not clear about commitment, I\u2019d say you need to drop him and let him grow up in his faith so that he can grow to understand what God\u2019s faithfulness looks like \/ what commitment looks like in his life; so that he can maturely lead another woman forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m glad you mentioned about an older man mentoring younger men \/ single \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmen, about what that commitment looks like, because given to go with their own desires they\u2019re going to have a DTR around sex. Their going to define the relationship physically, not spiritually, emotionally, and around, \u201cAre we moving toward a commitment?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Here we are in Washington, D.C., and we teach guys similar to what we\u2019ve just been talking about: about commitment, about taking the risk on yourself, don\u2019t leave it on her, be clear about your intentions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ll get guys\u2014because Washington is filled with type A, world conquering type of\u00a0 people\u2014and they will go to the other extreme of, \u201cI\u2019m not only initiating with you, I\u2019m defining the terms of the relationship. I\u2019m defining every six months exactly what we\u2019re doing.\u201d What we\u2019re looking for is for a guy who just simply understands commitment and is clear with a woman about what his intentions are all along the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe sets the precedent for what leadership in marriage will look like by demonstrating it when he\u2019s dating a woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me flip this to the other scenario Dennis talked about which is that scenario where you\u2019ve got a woman and she goes, \u201cYes, he\u2019s a great guy but there are these two things that are just kind of rough edges.\u201d She\u2019s the kind of woman that you think, \u201cIf Jesus was pursuing her, she\u2019d find something wrong with Him,\u201d right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That might be a problem right there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is probably not the majority. We\u2019re probably dealing with a real small segment, but I think there are women who are so commitment-phobic themselves that they\u2019re looking for somebody to have the maturity of a 50-year-old man when they\u2019re a 27-year-old guy, and they\u2019re going, \u201cUntil you\u2019re this mature, I can\u2019t even think about this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, and that\u2019s setting the standards too high for a guy to actually ever get a date. We\u2019re wanting the girl to actually look at a guy and say, \u201cOne, he\u2019s converted; two, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\the is studying the Word; three, he\u2019s getting discipled; and four, he\u2019s committed to a local church and showing that the church is important in his life.\u201d If you have those, you have a right trajectory in a guy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, no doubt about it. The Christian life is hard work, and it takes a lifetime to truly master it in all of its disciplines. I\u2019m not sure at the end of a lifetime you can have it mastered.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You do want to have some diagnostic questions in the back of your mind but you don\u2019t want to pull them out of your wallet on the date and say, \u201cCan I ask you a few questions?\u201d and see if they pass muster on that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Or they do this online. I mean the dating online is a fascinating experience of where two older singles are kind of circling one another \/ kind of trying to get to know each other. There\u2019s nothing like a person-to-person date, just to go out and have a cup of coffee \/ go out and have a meal together and to talk. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So let me ask you this\u2014I\u2019ll ask both of you this because I saw this online this weekend\u2014would you encourage a young woman to accept a date from a young man if he texted her to say, \u201cHey do you want to grab dinner?\u201d or does he need to call or do it face to face. Is a text a sufficient means for a young man to initiate a date with a young woman? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> We\u2019re talking about text, we\u2019re talking about Facebook messaging, we\u2019re talking about all kinds of varieties of social media that initiation happens. Well, yes and no. Yes, as in, okay if he\u2019s being deliberate; it\u2019s not being vague. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> No, in the sense of I\u2019d rather him have walked up and said this face to face. Treat her as an image bearer with dignity. Go talk to her rather than doing the safe thing, which is just doing it through some form of electronic media. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s what I did as a single guy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t have texting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I put a dime in the phone. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> --in the pay phone! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> --in the pay phone. I didn\u2019t go face to face. I mean dating is risky venture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You carved out a message in the stone and you passed it along. [Laughter] Hieroglyphics is what you did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think I\u2019ve got a little more grace to use texting; but I hope there\u2019s more of a context for the relationship than just that. I wouldn\u2019t want my daughter to go out with a guy she\u2019s never met, doesn\u2019t know and hasn\u2019t got enough of a relationship who would feel the freedom to text her and ask her to go on a date.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How about this, if the text says, \u201cWould you maybe want to go out sometime?\u201d and that\u2019s all it is. It\u2019s not, \u201cWould you want to get dinner on Friday night?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well that feels a little slippery.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It does feel a little slippery, doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s hedging his bets. Here\u2019s the thing\u2014did you ever get turned down?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I did, too. What about you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> I definitely did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did your wife turn you down?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> No, she didn\u2019t. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s move on to the third question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The third area is, is the woman\u2014and your heart goes out to these women--my \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\theart goes out to these women\u2014godly women who have said, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m going to do this. I want to be a wife and a mom. That\u2019s the desire that God\u2019s put in my heart. I\u2019m going to follow after Jesus and I\u2019m going to serve in the church. But you know what--I\u2019m forty and it looks like being a mom biologically is off the table for me. Guys are not paying interest in me. I guess my gift is the gift of singleness and it sure doesn\u2019t feel like a gift to me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, my heart breaks just even hearing you describe that. To that woman I want to say, don\u2019t bear that sorrow alone. Don\u2019t fight through your forties by yourself in the struggles that you\u2019re going to have. Because you know on a Friday night when all your friends who got married are out doing things and you\u2019re home by yourself, it\u2019ll feel deeply lonely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s when you\u2019re going to need families in the church who are invested in you to turn \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tto. That\u2019s when you\u2019re going to need a community who knows your burdens and who cares for you. That\u2019s when you can\u2019t fight through those years by yourself. It does come back to, \u201cIs Jesus fundamentally the most important thing in your life?\u201d As much as the desires are good, that\u2019s a difference between what I desire and what I really need. What I need is Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou think of the Samaritan woman at the well in John four. Here she was, she was coming to get water from the well in the middle of the day because she\u2019d live a shameful life. Jesus comes across and asks her for water. She\u2019s surprised because a Jew doesn\u2019t speak to a Samaritan, But our Lord is not bound by the cultural restraints at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJesus talks to her about living water, not the physical water, and even says, \u201cIf you knew who it was who was presenting you this living water, then you would never be \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthirsty again.\u201d She didn\u2019t get it.\u00a0 She actually thought He was talking about physical water because she responds, \u201cWhere can I get it so that I don\u2019t have to come back to this well anymore?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s interesting how she doesn\u2019t get it, He switches the conversation to talking about all the men in her life. It\u2019s unfair to talk to Jesus because He\u2019s omniscient. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the conversation, He\u2019s telling her about all the men she\u2019s ever been with. It\u2019s awkward for her to have that conversation. Yet He\u2019s telling her that what she needs are not these men but Him. Again and again, Jesus shows her who she really needs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe need people to bear our pain with us. That\u2019s hard to have gone through your 20\u2019s and 30\u2019s and now 40\u2019s and not be married. Don\u2019t do that alone. If your church is not bearing that with you, then find a church that will. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to turn the corner and have a lightening round. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re really going to do this to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m really going to do this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alright!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019ve got to be quick on these. Let\u2019s look at them. What do you say to a woman who\u2019s dating a controlling man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> A controlling man is like a tyrant of a small country, and yet he\u2019s getting it all out on his girlfriend. Yet, sometimes it\u2019s subtle, like he actually wants to know everywhere she\u2019s at. He\u2019s jealous of the relationships that she has. He wants her time all the time. Sometimes it\u2019s more explicit. Like telling her what she should wear or what she should do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo<em> not<\/em> let a controlling man rule your life, because right there it\u2019s a denigration of the dignity that God gives you as an image bearer. But right there it also shows you that he doesn\u2019t understand God\u2019s sovereignty; he doesn\u2019t know how to live under God\u2019s sovereignty because he lives as if he\u2019s king of the universe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So Break it off?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Break it off. Do <em>not<\/em> let a controlling man rule your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Break it off now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Break it off now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The next one: what do you say to a woman who is dating an angry man, maybe an abusive man, maybe a man who\u2019s abused her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Abuse is the most horrific form of treatment of one person to another, because it\u2019s deliberate harm, physically, emotionally, sexually to someone else. That man is worse than the controlling man, because in the control, that man is just trying to keep you under his thumb. In abuse, he\u2019s harming you into submission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo woman deserves that. Women will make all kinds of compromises because they have fallen in love with this guy. Get rid of him. No woman deserves abuse! In fact, you should run in the exact opposite direction. All the friends who are convincing you that you shouldn\u2019t be with this man. You should actually listen to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Deepak, I\u2019ve said to a number of women over the years, \u201cWatch how the guy \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou\u2019re dating treats his mom and how he treats the waitress at the restaurant. Because whatever he\u2019s doing with those two women is how he\u2019s going to be treating you. You may think, \u2018He\u2019ll never treat me that way.\u2019 He will because that\u2019s his nature is to treat people that way. He\u2019s just cleaning it up for you in the courtship phase.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Suddenly, where this goes is women will put up with it, will get married, and will have to live under this. Then what they never imagined possible, when he hits their child for the first time, then she realizes, \u201cI\u2019ve got to get out.\u201d But you don\u2019t want to wait that long. You want to cut it off early.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What do you say to the woman who\u2019s dating a narcissist? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Well, selfishness is the worst thing possible when it comes to sex, when it comes to servanthood, when it comes to leading; because a self-centered man has \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmade himself the center of his universe and doesn\u2019t get what it means to be a godly, Biblical man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBiblical leadership is a servant-hearted leadership modeled after what Christ did in giving up his life. A self-centered man doesn\u2019t get that because he\u2019s oriented his world around himself. What you see in all three of these guys--you see they\u2019re king of the universe. They\u2019re the center of their universe. God is not. Until they are dethroned and God is finally sitting on His throne in their life, they\u2019re not worthy of your time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We have said at the Weekend-to-Remember\u00ae marriage getaway, \u201cLove is blind, but marriage is an eye-opener.\u201d If that is true, then that means you as a single person, before you seal the deal\u2014before you go all in and you sign your covenant and you take those wedding bands and you put them on one another\u2019s hands, go to a godly \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tleader \/ a godly mentor, someone you can really trust who will tell you the truth \/ tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear in your church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLove has a way of blinding us and we can\u2019t see it 360. You need to go to them and say, \u201cIs there something about this that you\u2019re seeing that causes you to wonder in any way. Speak to me now, because this is about to be a done deal. I love him. He loves me, but I need your blessing on this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> And you need to be humble enough to hear their feedback when they say things you don\u2019t want to hear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m thinking of the woman who\u2019s been listening all this week, who tuned in in the middle and said, \u201cI\u2019m going to go back and listen to what I missed already online because I want to hear this whole conversation.\u201d She\u2019s hearing us wrap this up and she\u2019s thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t feel encouraged. This is not\u2014\u201c\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, we can\u2019t possibly address all the issues nor speak with complete adequate wisdom to the spectrum of the single people who go all the way back into their teens \/ the college years \/ the 20\u2019s \/ the 30\u2019s, 40\u2019s, 50\u2019s \/some who are single by choice \/ some who are single again, not by choice. We\u2019re messy as human beings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we\u2019ve attempted to do is just advise you to the best of our ability. My encouragement is for you to get a copy of Deepak\u2019s book, <em>She\u2019s Got the Wrong Guy<\/em>, and to read it and maybe get some feedback soon in the relationship before you tie that knot, like Deepak warns about here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDeepak, I want to thank you for your work on this \/ your ministry there in D.C. If a man continues to be ambiguous about the relationship, a woman needs to break it off and let him grow in his faith.","meta_box":{"show_notes":"","transcript_url":"https:\/\/transcript.familylifetoday.com\/fl2019-02-06.pdf","transcript_content":"<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If you\u2019re a single woman dating someone and you see evidence that he can be controlling, that he\u2019s bit of a tyrant, Deepak Reju says that ought to be a significant red flag in your relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Do <em>not<\/em> let a controlling man rule your life because right there it\u2019s a denigration of the dignity that God gives you as an image bearer, but right there it also shows you that he doesn\u2019t understand God\u2019s sovereignty; he doesn\u2019t know how to live under God\u2019s sovereignty because he lives as if he\u2019s king of the universe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, February 6<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe controller guy\u2014that\u2019s one thing that a single woman ought to be concerned about, but there are other red flags to be aware of. We\u2019ll talk more about those today with Deepak Reju. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. I\u2019m hoping as we\u2019ve been having this conversation this week about single women and why smart women settle, our goal here has not been, let\u2019s see how many single women\u2019s toes we can step on or how many wounds we can probe, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. I had a daughter who was single a good ways into her 30\u2019s. This is real. This is a hard thing when as a young lady wanted to be married and have a family, and they find themselves in their late 20\u2019s\u2014the average age of getting married now is 29 for men, 27 \u00bd for women. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a reality, Bob, and we just need to talk frankly and honestly. We\u2019re doing that this week with Deepak Reju who is a pastor inside of the Beltway in Washington, D.C. at Capitol Hill Baptist Church. He\u2019s written a book called <em>She\u2019s Got the Wrong Guy<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs Bob hinted at a moment ago, it\u2019s subtitled, <em>Why Smart Women Settle<\/em>. <em>Settle<\/em>--it\u2019s really kind of a nasty word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> It is nasty word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Here\u2019s what I want to talk about today and I\u2019ve got a bonus round if you cover all three of these subjects. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to talk about commitment. What should a woman do if there\u2019s a guy she\u2019s dating and he won\u2019t pull the trigger? He won\u2019t define the relationship. Secondly, I want you to speak to women who may have been single so long they\u2019ve got a check list, and then third, what do you say to a 40-year-old woman who always thought she\u2019d be married and have a family and be experiencing family in her 40\u2019s and now she\u2019s <em>still <\/em>single. I want you to talk about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen a bonus round, I want you to talk about dating a controlling man, dating a jealous man,--\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> --dating an angry man. It would just be quick, Bob. I know what\u2019s in the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The book has got a lot of great stuff. He\u2019s got a lot of hours with counselling. How many people have you counselled over the past, what is it, 20 years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, 17 or 18 years I\u2019ve been counselling. I don\u2019t know, I do hundreds, thousands. You stop counting at some point and you just start welcoming the next person that walks through the door. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What do you say to a young lady who\u2019s dating a man who appears to be passive when it comes to making an all-in commitment called marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> The danger here is she actually works the relationship to force him to make a commitment. That\u2019s just not good because we want the guy to be really clear on his commitments. Let\u2019s take the classic example of a guy who actually works into the friendship and spends time with the girl, never defines the relationship, hangs out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHanging out turns out to be a lot of time together, seems like their dating and her friend comes to her and says, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cAre you guys a couple?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d She says, \u201cI don\u2019t know. He\u2019s never defined anything. I don\u2019t know what we\u2019re doing.\u201d She feels forced to then at some point say, \u201cOkay, what are we doing?\u201d He says, \u201cWell, we\u2019re spending time together. We\u2019re getting to know on another.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Organic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, it\u2019s organic-- [Laughter] --like vegetables. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve heard this lecture before. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> It perpetuates because she wants to have the relationship\u2014all her fears of getting married, her desire is to have children. Here\u2019s a guy who\u2019s spending time with her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve just got to step in to say a word to the guys who are listening. Here\u2019s why this is important: a young lady has these fears that Deepak talking about here, and the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tonly thing that\u2019s going to cast out the fears out of her heart is you showing the love of Jesus Christ in a commitment that begins to make a safe place for her to deal with those fears and to finally experience someone who is not going to reject her if they truly get to know her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Love is not some ambiguous feeling, but it\u2019s commitment. God has shown His commitment to us by sending His Son for us. God has shown us what faithfulness looks like in enduring with us in all the ways that we\u2019ve messed up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cThis is how we know what love is--\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> This is--exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>--\u201cJesus Christ laid down his life.\u201d So commitment and self sacrifice are at the core of what real love is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want to know\u2014I had a friend of mine who said, she was 30 years old, a guy started dating her. On the third date she said to him, \u201cHang on, you just need to know: we can keep going out; but six months from today this will either be headed toward the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\taltar or it will be over because that should be enough time for you to know what this relationship looks like. If six months from now you say, \u2018I don\u2019t think so,\u2019 okay, no harm, no foul. But I\u2019m going to call the question.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould you say that\u2019s a good strategy or not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> No, in the sense of her forcing a relationship on him. Yes, in the sense of, we need to teach the guys what God looks like in His faithfulness and commitment so that <em>they <\/em>understand what it means to be a man; and not put this on women who are struggling to figure out what\u2019s going on in the relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot enough pastors or mentors are teaching men what commitment looks like and actually letting men absorb the risk in the relationship by making clear what they\u2019re doing in the relationship by helping the gal understand, \u201cThis is exactly what I intend to do. This is exactly where we\u2019re at. This is exactly where I\u2019m leading us.\u201d So the girl never has to wonder. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I raised my sons telling them over and over again, \u201cIf you are taking the young woman out on a date, it should be with the idea in the back of your head, \u2018We may get married at some point.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If that\u2019s not in the back of your head\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> --then you shouldn\u2019t be doing it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> --you\u2019re defrauding her by suggesting as you go out together and have a fun evening. In the back of her mind is, \u201cIs this going somewhere.\u201d If that\u2019s to in the back of your mind, \u201cThis might be going somewhere,\u201d then you\u2019re being fraudulent with her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, for that single woman that\u2019s dating the guy whose ambiguous and not clear about commitment, I\u2019d say you need to drop him and let him grow up in his faith so that he can grow to understand what God\u2019s faithfulness looks like \/ what commitment looks like in his life; so that he can maturely lead another woman forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m glad you mentioned about an older man mentoring younger men \/ single \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmen, about what that commitment looks like, because given to go with their own desires they\u2019re going to have a DTR around sex. Their going to define the relationship physically, not spiritually, emotionally, and around, \u201cAre we moving toward a commitment?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Here we are in Washington, D.C., and we teach guys similar to what we\u2019ve just been talking about: about commitment, about taking the risk on yourself, don\u2019t leave it on her, be clear about your intentions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ll get guys\u2014because Washington is filled with type A, world conquering type of\u00a0 people\u2014and they will go to the other extreme of, \u201cI\u2019m not only initiating with you, I\u2019m defining the terms of the relationship. I\u2019m defining every six months exactly what we\u2019re doing.\u201d What we\u2019re looking for is for a guy who just simply understands commitment and is clear with a woman about what his intentions are all along the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe sets the precedent for what leadership in marriage will look like by demonstrating it when he\u2019s dating a woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me flip this to the other scenario Dennis talked about which is that scenario where you\u2019ve got a woman and she goes, \u201cYes, he\u2019s a great guy but there are these two things that are just kind of rough edges.\u201d She\u2019s the kind of woman that you think, \u201cIf Jesus was pursuing her, she\u2019d find something wrong with Him,\u201d right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That might be a problem right there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is probably not the majority. We\u2019re probably dealing with a real small segment, but I think there are women who are so commitment-phobic themselves that they\u2019re looking for somebody to have the maturity of a 50-year-old man when they\u2019re a 27-year-old guy, and they\u2019re going, \u201cUntil you\u2019re this mature, I can\u2019t even think about this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, and that\u2019s setting the standards too high for a guy to actually ever get a date. We\u2019re wanting the girl to actually look at a guy and say, \u201cOne, he\u2019s converted; two, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\the is studying the Word; three, he\u2019s getting discipled; and four, he\u2019s committed to a local church and showing that the church is important in his life.\u201d If you have those, you have a right trajectory in a guy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, no doubt about it. The Christian life is hard work, and it takes a lifetime to truly master it in all of its disciplines. I\u2019m not sure at the end of a lifetime you can have it mastered.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You do want to have some diagnostic questions in the back of your mind but you don\u2019t want to pull them out of your wallet on the date and say, \u201cCan I ask you a few questions?\u201d and see if they pass muster on that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Or they do this online. I mean the dating online is a fascinating experience of where two older singles are kind of circling one another \/ kind of trying to get to know each other. There\u2019s nothing like a person-to-person date, just to go out and have a cup of coffee \/ go out and have a meal together and to talk. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So let me ask you this\u2014I\u2019ll ask both of you this because I saw this online this weekend\u2014would you encourage a young woman to accept a date from a young man if he texted her to say, \u201cHey do you want to grab dinner?\u201d or does he need to call or do it face to face. Is a text a sufficient means for a young man to initiate a date with a young woman? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> We\u2019re talking about text, we\u2019re talking about Facebook messaging, we\u2019re talking about all kinds of varieties of social media that initiation happens. Well, yes and no. Yes, as in, okay if he\u2019s being deliberate; it\u2019s not being vague. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> No, in the sense of I\u2019d rather him have walked up and said this face to face. Treat her as an image bearer with dignity. Go talk to her rather than doing the safe thing, which is just doing it through some form of electronic media. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s what I did as a single guy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t have texting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I put a dime in the phone. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> --in the pay phone! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> --in the pay phone. I didn\u2019t go face to face. I mean dating is risky venture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You carved out a message in the stone and you passed it along. [Laughter] Hieroglyphics is what you did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think I\u2019ve got a little more grace to use texting; but I hope there\u2019s more of a context for the relationship than just that. I wouldn\u2019t want my daughter to go out with a guy she\u2019s never met, doesn\u2019t know and hasn\u2019t got enough of a relationship who would feel the freedom to text her and ask her to go on a date.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How about this, if the text says, \u201cWould you maybe want to go out sometime?\u201d and that\u2019s all it is. It\u2019s not, \u201cWould you want to get dinner on Friday night?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well that feels a little slippery.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It does feel a little slippery, doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s hedging his bets. Here\u2019s the thing\u2014did you ever get turned down?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I did, too. What about you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> I definitely did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did your wife turn you down?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> No, she didn\u2019t. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s move on to the third question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The third area is, is the woman\u2014and your heart goes out to these women--my \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\theart goes out to these women\u2014godly women who have said, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m going to do this. I want to be a wife and a mom. That\u2019s the desire that God\u2019s put in my heart. I\u2019m going to follow after Jesus and I\u2019m going to serve in the church. But you know what--I\u2019m forty and it looks like being a mom biologically is off the table for me. Guys are not paying interest in me. I guess my gift is the gift of singleness and it sure doesn\u2019t feel like a gift to me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Yes, my heart breaks just even hearing you describe that. To that woman I want to say, don\u2019t bear that sorrow alone. Don\u2019t fight through your forties by yourself in the struggles that you\u2019re going to have. Because you know on a Friday night when all your friends who got married are out doing things and you\u2019re home by yourself, it\u2019ll feel deeply lonely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s when you\u2019re going to need families in the church who are invested in you to turn \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tto. That\u2019s when you\u2019re going to need a community who knows your burdens and who cares for you. That\u2019s when you can\u2019t fight through those years by yourself. It does come back to, \u201cIs Jesus fundamentally the most important thing in your life?\u201d As much as the desires are good, that\u2019s a difference between what I desire and what I really need. What I need is Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou think of the Samaritan woman at the well in John four. Here she was, she was coming to get water from the well in the middle of the day because she\u2019d live a shameful life. Jesus comes across and asks her for water. She\u2019s surprised because a Jew doesn\u2019t speak to a Samaritan, But our Lord is not bound by the cultural restraints at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJesus talks to her about living water, not the physical water, and even says, \u201cIf you knew who it was who was presenting you this living water, then you would never be \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthirsty again.\u201d She didn\u2019t get it.\u00a0 She actually thought He was talking about physical water because she responds, \u201cWhere can I get it so that I don\u2019t have to come back to this well anymore?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s interesting how she doesn\u2019t get it, He switches the conversation to talking about all the men in her life. It\u2019s unfair to talk to Jesus because He\u2019s omniscient. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the conversation, He\u2019s telling her about all the men she\u2019s ever been with. It\u2019s awkward for her to have that conversation. Yet He\u2019s telling her that what she needs are not these men but Him. Again and again, Jesus shows her who she really needs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe need people to bear our pain with us. That\u2019s hard to have gone through your 20\u2019s and 30\u2019s and now 40\u2019s and not be married. Don\u2019t do that alone. If your church is not bearing that with you, then find a church that will. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to turn the corner and have a lightening round. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re really going to do this to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m really going to do this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alright!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019ve got to be quick on these. Let\u2019s look at them. What do you say to a woman who\u2019s dating a controlling man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> A controlling man is like a tyrant of a small country, and yet he\u2019s getting it all out on his girlfriend. Yet, sometimes it\u2019s subtle, like he actually wants to know everywhere she\u2019s at. He\u2019s jealous of the relationships that she has. He wants her time all the time. Sometimes it\u2019s more explicit. Like telling her what she should wear or what she should do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo<em> not<\/em> let a controlling man rule your life, because right there it\u2019s a denigration of the dignity that God gives you as an image bearer. But right there it also shows you that he doesn\u2019t understand God\u2019s sovereignty; he doesn\u2019t know how to live under God\u2019s sovereignty because he lives as if he\u2019s king of the universe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So Break it off?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Break it off. Do <em>not<\/em> let a controlling man rule your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Break it off now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Break it off now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The next one: what do you say to a woman who is dating an angry man, maybe an abusive man, maybe a man who\u2019s abused her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Abuse is the most horrific form of treatment of one person to another, because it\u2019s deliberate harm, physically, emotionally, sexually to someone else. That man is worse than the controlling man, because in the control, that man is just trying to keep you under his thumb. In abuse, he\u2019s harming you into submission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo woman deserves that. Women will make all kinds of compromises because they have fallen in love with this guy. Get rid of him. No woman deserves abuse! In fact, you should run in the exact opposite direction. All the friends who are convincing you that you shouldn\u2019t be with this man. You should actually listen to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Deepak, I\u2019ve said to a number of women over the years, \u201cWatch how the guy \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou\u2019re dating treats his mom and how he treats the waitress at the restaurant. Because whatever he\u2019s doing with those two women is how he\u2019s going to be treating you. You may think, \u2018He\u2019ll never treat me that way.\u2019 He will because that\u2019s his nature is to treat people that way. He\u2019s just cleaning it up for you in the courtship phase.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Suddenly, where this goes is women will put up with it, will get married, and will have to live under this. Then what they never imagined possible, when he hits their child for the first time, then she realizes, \u201cI\u2019ve got to get out.\u201d But you don\u2019t want to wait that long. You want to cut it off early.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What do you say to the woman who\u2019s dating a narcissist? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> Well, selfishness is the worst thing possible when it comes to sex, when it comes to servanthood, when it comes to leading; because a self-centered man has \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmade himself the center of his universe and doesn\u2019t get what it means to be a godly, Biblical man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBiblical leadership is a servant-hearted leadership modeled after what Christ did in giving up his life. A self-centered man doesn\u2019t get that because he\u2019s oriented his world around himself. What you see in all three of these guys--you see they\u2019re king of the universe. They\u2019re the center of their universe. God is not. Until they are dethroned and God is finally sitting on His throne in their life, they\u2019re not worthy of your time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We have said at the Weekend-to-Remember\u00ae marriage getaway, \u201cLove is blind, but marriage is an eye-opener.\u201d If that is true, then that means you as a single person, before you seal the deal\u2014before you go all in and you sign your covenant and you take those wedding bands and you put them on one another\u2019s hands, go to a godly \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tleader \/ a godly mentor, someone you can really trust who will tell you the truth \/ tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear in your church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLove has a way of blinding us and we can\u2019t see it 360. You need to go to them and say, \u201cIs there something about this that you\u2019re seeing that causes you to wonder in any way. Speak to me now, because this is about to be a done deal. I love him. He loves me, but I need your blessing on this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Deepak:<\/strong> And you need to be humble enough to hear their feedback when they say things you don\u2019t want to hear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m thinking of the woman who\u2019s been listening all this week, who tuned in in the middle and said, \u201cI\u2019m going to go back and listen to what I missed already online because I want to hear this whole conversation.\u201d She\u2019s hearing us wrap this up and she\u2019s thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t feel encouraged. This is not\u2014\u201c\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, we can\u2019t possibly address all the issues nor speak with complete adequate wisdom to the spectrum of the single people who go all the way back into their teens \/ the college years \/ the 20\u2019s \/ the 30\u2019s, 40\u2019s, 50\u2019s \/some who are single by choice \/ some who are single again, not by choice. We\u2019re messy as human beings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we\u2019ve attempted to do is just advise you to the best of our ability. My encouragement is for you to get a copy of Deepak\u2019s book, <em>She\u2019s Got the Wrong Guy<\/em>, and to read it and maybe get some feedback soon in the relationship before you tie that knot, like Deepak warns about here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDeepak, I want to thank you for your work on this \/ your ministry there in D.C.
