This is a big thing because as a parent we\u2019re like, \u201cHow do I do this? I want to do this. I feel like I\u2019m failing. I feel like culture is pressing in on our family. How can we bring Jesus into our home in a way that our kids are like, \u2018What are we doing?\u2019\u201d [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes practical and maybe even surprising, maybe a creative. We\u2019ve got a creative.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Quina Aragon is back with us. Spoken word artist, author, speaker, mom, wife - welcome back.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Wow. Thank you again for having me back.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Quina you have a daughter, how old is she?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: She\u2019s seven.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: She\u2019s seven and so we understand you\u2019re thinking, \u201cWait guys I have a seven year old,\u201d but you\u2019ve learned a lot probably and I\u2019m sure you have a lot of friends that you\u2019ve been talking to and you\u2019re discussing this is how we\u2019re bringing Jesus into our home and into our family and to our kids.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: So you can kick us off.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: The first one I got from my older sister because she had kids before me and that is normalize apologizing to your kids.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Mmm<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Normalize saying, listen even if they don\u2019t even understand they\u2019re one, two years old, you get on their level, you get on your knee, you get eye to eye and you say, \u201cHey when mommy raised her voice just now, when mommy got impatient that\u2019s on me. That was mommy\u2019s heart issue and I should have been more patient and I\u2019m so sorry. Will you forgive me?\u201d Because if it\u2019s always them seeing us as the super hero then they\u2019re going to miss the fact that Jesus is the super hero in the story of our family. So normalize, \u201cHey mommy doesn\u2019t have it all together either, and I need your forgiveness too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Hey\u2013don\u2019t go to yours yet.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I was just going to say it was part of mine. That was one of the things I had written down.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You are saying, \u201cQuina stole yours is that what you\u2019re saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Basically I said that yes. But I think I put down letting them see me repent-<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u2013to them but also to Jesus. Like let them hear my prayer. I think that creates an openness in the house of saying, \u201cWe\u2019re not perfect and we\u2019re going to mess up and we can talk about it. Isn\u2019t it good news that Jesus forgives us and He gives us do-overs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You know I love that because when you think of practical ways to bring Jesus into your kids and into your home you think Bible, church, Christian school, and you guys both went totally different place. [Laughter] I guess I\u2019m sitting with two creatives. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Ann: It\u2019s because no, it\u2019s because I had to apologize constantly. I\u2019d get mad and angry, \u201cI\u2019m so sorry. Mommy shouldn\u2019t have blown up like that,\u201d [Laughter] you know?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, yes<\/p>\n<p>Ann: But there\u2019s a good thing in that, that repentant heart. But sometimes the enemy would take that to the point of saying, \u201cWhat kind of mom are you?\u201d You know? Because Jesus is saying He\u2019s already forgiven that but the enemy likes to keep bringing it back up. Have you found that?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Oh yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: He calls you names. You\u2019re going to mess your kids up so bad. They\u2019ll never walk with Jesus<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, you\u2019re just going to repeat that cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes - generational sin, you\u2019re not changed.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, yes that\u2019s - Oh that\u2019s one of my biggest fears you know.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: What<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I feel like Satan does capitalize on that moment and say, \u201cSee, that was just like when you were a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: You saw the fear in her eyes? You just did that to her. She\u2019s going to be scared for life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: So how have you dealt with that? When you get to that point, what do you do?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, I\u2019ll pray, but I\u2019ll also talk to my husband. He\u2019s a great place to kind of softly land to be like, \u201cI feel like I\u2019m the worst mom in the world and I\u2019m just turning into this monster.\u201d I\u2019ll say the dark things right, and he\u2019ll have this phrase now at this point. We\u2019ve been married now about eight years and he\u2019ll be like, \u201cI\u2019m not afraid of you,\u201d and he doesn\u2019t mean that in a mean way-<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: He means it in a, \u201cI welcome that, because I\u2019m here to remind you who you actually are in Christ that you are not these things and that your repentance is showing the gospel. It is ministering,\u201d not that we want to be hurting our kids but when it inevitably happens.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Well what is the best thing we husbands can do when our wives are expressing the two things you just were talking about?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I think your husband just modeled it.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Is that it?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes he models it a lot, but we\u2019ve also learned because, and I\u2019m not trying to stereotype all men or anything like that, but he wants to fix it a lot of times. So we\u2019ve had to learn for him to say, \u201cDo you want me to just listen right now, or do you want me to speak into that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: He\u2019ll ask.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Dave will say, \u201cWhat do you need right now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: And it\u2019s a little uncomfortable at first to kind of exercise that muscle but then I see that as he\u2019s being very gracious because he naturally\u2013his heart is, \u201cI want to help my wife,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I feel like him offering that question helps out a lot.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: That\u2019s great. Okay we\u2019ve got one [Laughter] normalize, apologize. That\u2019s one<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Normalize, apologize. I like that.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You\u2019ve got another one?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I\u2019m going to you.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I mean one of the first things I thought, it\u2019s if you want to share your faith, lead your family, bring Jesus into your home. One of the things I\u2019ve done over the years that I feel like is helpful is when I\u201dm listening to a sermon, when I\u2019m listening to a podcast, and I\u2019m really thinking like when I\u2019m in church and there\u2019s a message being given, I take notes on my phone.<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019ll go to my phone and I\u2019ll take notes on it and why am I telling you this? Because then I share it. It\u2019s Sunday and I\u2019m at church and I\u2019m taking notes and thinking this is powerful and I\u2019m like, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m sending this to my boys. I\u2019m sending this to men that I know.\u201d But again it\u2019s just a way. It isn\u2019t just about me learning and growing if I\u2019m a dad, a husband, a wife, a mom, I\u2019ve got people that I can share this with. I\u2019ve done that when I was the Detroit Lions Chaplain. I would even say to the guys at chapel, \u201cAnything that I\u2019m saying that you want, I\u2019ve got my notes I\u2019ll text it to you.\u201d so everybody in the room would say, \u201cText me that entire message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: It was a way to take what I\u2019m learning and what God is saying to me and teaching me, and sharing it. We live in a digital world where that makes it so easy. That\u2019s why I don\u2019t write notes, because it\u2019s so much harder unless you take a picture and then send it but I\u2019m always, I\u2019m always doing it digitally.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Okay, mine was super similar to that.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Is this the third one because we have two out of five<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Well, no it\u2019s kind of the same because mine was talking to the kids about everything Jesus is teaching me<\/p>\n<p>Dave: \u2013hmm<\/p>\n<p>Ann: So it\u2019s basically the same thing. When I\u2019m not overflowing and talking about something God has done or Jesus has said or that He\u2019s doing in my life, I realize, Ohh, I\u2019m not taping in to Him,\u201d which is so easy for all of us to do. But for me it was a little bit of a\u2013it was like a temperature gauge of, \u201cAhh, I\u2019m not connected to the Father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I think one of the things that I really like doing is sharing with them stories of what God did that day and you know this, whether I paid for someone\u2019s lunch, or I paid for someone\u2019s groceries. I want them to see that our love for Jesus is something that\u2019s active. It\u2019s not passive. It\u2019s something that compels us as we love people and we see people we notice them. We say things to them that God would say. I wanted that to be a normal part of the Christian life. See I get teary talking about it.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I was going to say you\u2019re getting teary about what part of it?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: This is all we\u2019re doing here today. [Laughter] We\u2019re just crying and talking.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Is it the passing it on to your children or the reaching out and touching people?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I think it\u2019s one of the greatest joys that God can give us is when we love and see people the way that He would do that. And I don\u2019t feel like I was good at that growing up because I was so self-centered that I couldn\u2019t be others-centered and see the beauty in the people around me whether they\u2019re Christian or not it doesn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Wow. Right, right.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Even if it\u2019s a homeless person sitting on the street and saying, \u201cI see you,\u201d and letting our kids see that that\u2019s normal in the Christian life.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: We\u2019ve got two, we\u2019re back to Quina.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Whoo that\u2019s good.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: That\u2019s kind of two and a half, three.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Two point five.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: There you go.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Two point five. [Laughter] I like that. We\u2019re halfway done.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I have one that I was thinking about when maybe when Jael my daughter was a little bit younger but when we had more time to take walks together, but if you\u2019re in a place where you can take a walk I love doing this with little kids.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Ahhh.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: \u201cYou see that tree over there? See that bird?\u201d and depending on the age it might just be, \u201cWho do you think made that?<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Who made that? Oh God made that. Did you know He made?\u201d \u201cWait mommy did He actually make the sky?\u201d and you know just continuing. I think about was it in Deuteronomy when He talks about, \u201cAs you rise, as you sit-<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Deuteronomy 6<\/p>\n<p>Quina: \u2013as you walk, as you,\u201d it\u2019s the Word of God. So I\u2019ve taken that a bit to heart. So literally we\u2019ll go walking. I love nature, so walking and being about to talk about, \u201cCan you believe God made all these different kinds of leaves?\u201d Or these kinds of you know, depending on where you live you can point to anything. I like that and then also with that maybe this will round out the point, the other point five [laughter] but when you see an item like whether it\u2019s maybe you see a bird or you see whatever, \u201cYou know the story in the Bible that\u2019s like that?\u201d and it kind of always goes back to storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Oh that\u2019s good.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: You know that reminds me of this story and making not about, \u2018I\u2019 teacher \u2013 \u2018you\u2019 student, you must now listen and receive my wisdom.\u201d It\u2019s not like that. [Laughter] That was my authority voice. So I\u2019m saying don\u2019t do that. I\u2019m saying come side by side and say, \u201cMan that reminds me of this one story in the Bible. Have you heard of...?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: You\u2019re such a good storyteller. Your voice is so good. When she was reading parts of her book weren\u2019t you like I wish she would read like that to me every night.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Oh yes. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Quina: If someone wants me, like I would love that. [Laughter] We\u2019re reading through Chronicles of Narnia right now at night.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Oh wow.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Maybe that\u2019s the other, is read through some good literature that will kind of spark that conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Well you know I\u2019ve got one. Get Quina\u2019s book [Laughter] and read them with your kids.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: There you go. Is this number four?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I\u2019m not mad at that one.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Okay let\u2019s say that can be one, reading.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes though, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I did it whenever we were home every single night.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: \u2013every night<\/p>\n<p>Dave: We would do this with our boys.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We would lay in our bed. Sometimes all three were in my bed or I\u2019d take turns with them. But especially reading some literature like Chronicles of Narnia - whoo those are so good.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes. And then I cry and then I\u2019m like\u2013the other night, what was it in, we just finished The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and when it talks about when Aslan dies and how Susan and Lucy felt, the darkness and the pain and like you\u2019ll never be happy again. The way CS Lewis describes it of course I started crying while I read it, I\u2019m like, \u201cBaby I\u2019m sorry,\u201d I just started crying.<\/p>\n<p>Amazingly as a seven year old she\u2019s just like, \u201cIt\u2019s okay. You can cry,\u201d and I was like, \u201cWow.\u201d Something that we\u2019ve been trying to teach her is actually settling in. That\u2019s encouraging but being able to have those resources is such a to have the literature that we have, such a wealth of whether it\u2019s picture books or story books, whatever it may be - those things. Again it keeps going back to story.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Oh definitely. I could throw in movies as well.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: The same thing. You utilize video. You can pull it right up on your phone and say, \u201cLet\u2019s talk about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: That\u2019s really good.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Okay, you got another one?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Do you? It\u2019s your turn.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Live it.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: That\u2019s good.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: We wrote about it in our No Perfect Parents book, faith is caught rather than taught. You can teach all you want, and that\u2019s good, and we should open the Word. But they\u2019re going to follow what you live and so I\u2019m not having to do this because I\u2019m supposed to lead my family. It\u2019s like no this is who I am and it\u2019s coming out. I\u2019m in the Word and because I\u2019m in the Word God is speaking to me and I have something to give. You cannot give away what you first do not possess. I would just say man that is the greatest thing you can do, live it, and instead of looking at your kids and like they\u2019ve got to get this look in the mirror and say, \u201cAm I getting this?\u201d Because if I\u2019m getting this it\u2019ll get passed on.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: That\u2019s good.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Alright.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Alright.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I guess we have only one more left.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Joy. Bring joy into your home. I know that I could say Jesus, but Jesus is joy. So bring joy in Jesus into your home. I mean in James when it says, \u201cConsider it all joy, my brothers and sisters when you encounter various trials, knowing that\u2026\u201d I\u2019m thinking of you Quina because you\u2019ve gone through a lot, \u201cKnowing that the testing of your faith will produce endurance, you\u2019ll be perfect and complete lacking in nothing.\u201d But there\u2019s something about when our kids see us, even through trial, there\u2019s a contentment and a joy in our\u2013that we\u2019re looking to Jesus. So that\u2019s part of it but the other part is just having fun as a family. We had fun.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We would do things that our kids, our neighbor kids would hang out at our house all the time, because we were doing crazy stuff. [Laughter] We\u2019d have these water gun fights where we\u2019re running down the street. You\u2019re playing sports with the kids. We\u2019re playing street hockey, capture the flag. We would toilet paper our friend\u2019s houses [Laughter] as they got older because they wanted to do something risky.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: In a modest way. We didn\u2019t destroy their houses.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: No, no right, but they\u2019re little.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Shaving cream slip \u2018n slide-<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: The last day of school was shaving cream slip \u2018n slide<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I want to go to your house [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I mean when I used to drive around our cul-de-sac in our car just going around and around, [Laughter] one time I parked the car sideways in the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Like that so it\u2019s turned.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: It\u2019s turned sideways and the kids are like, \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d \u201cLet\u2019s go in the house and see which neighbor calls first to say, \u2018What are you doing?\u2019\u201d [Laughter] So we were looking maybe three minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: It was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes, and we all knew, \u201cGuess like who\u2019s calling,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Wait a minute, why\u2019s it parked sideways? Oh, okay.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Oh my goodness.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u2013and this was back when they got into middle school, high school where we\u2019re going through a drive through. This is super late at night so the lines aren\u2019t very long but I took this sticky note, this is terrible, I\u2019d probably get in trouble for this, sticky note and wrote on the sticky note. I had a sharpie with me. It said, \u201cSpeak loud right where the sticker is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Speaker broken.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I don\u2019t know if I said speaker broken because that\u2019d be lying.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: She put it on the microphone for the drive through and then we went inside to listen to people.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Oh my goodness.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And so we go inside, this is like 10:00 at night and they\u2019re screaming, \u201cI WANT A HAMBURGER,\u201d and people are-they\u2019re the workers are like, \u201cWhat, why are you screaming?\u201d You know we\u2019re shaking we\u2019re laughing so hard.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Oh my goodness.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: So there\u2019s parts of that that I wanted our kids to know. We love Jesus and this isn\u2019t this boring place. We have joy. We want this to be a place that attracts everybody because that love and joy that Jesus brings is something that\u2019s contagious.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes. That same hospitality that the family that where I first heard the gospel that they showed me, that\u2019s something that I\u2019ve been trying to emulate as well in the neighborhoods that we\u2019ve lived in. One of the biggest privileges to me is when one of the middle school girls in my old neighborhoods call me, multiple ones have called me, \u201cYou\u2019re like my neighborhood mom. Like I can talk to you about my stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our doors are open. My husband and I just had a big you know, kind of hospitality policy like if they\u2019re neighbors like you\u2019re welcome in. We might just have a messy day, we might have a rough day, we might have a great day, but you\u2019re welcome into our space.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I think what happens when our kids get older, we\u2019ve shared this a few times but their friends are hurting and they have stories. But when you're open and you\u2019re watching your kid\u2019s friends, just to sit down and say just kind of where you were Quina. \u201cHey, you know it seems like life seems heavy to you. Am I correct? Can I pray for you? Is anything going on?\u201d Man these teenagers will cry. They may not pour it out to their parents but sometimes they\u2019ll pour it out to you.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Oh yes, yes. That\u2019s so true, I know I was like that.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Really?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, my mom could have been telling me the same exact thing that you told me but when you said it, \u201cDo you realize - this is a good point,\u201d and just open up to others.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Ohh, I\u2019d like to live on your street. Isn\u2019t she cool?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: You with the water gun fight. Yes I\u2019m going to take some of these ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Do it! [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We had one little girl that lived on the corner, I think maybe in the fourth grade.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Oh no.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: She comes to our house and we go, \u201cWe\u2019re going toilet papering tonight. Everybody get in the car,\u201d and she, she raises her hand and goes, \u201cUm, could I come with you?\u201d and so I\u2019m like, \u201cWell we have to call your mom,\u201d and so she gets on the phone and she goes, \u201cMy mom doesn\u2019t believe me because Dave\u2019s the pastor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[Laughter] So I get on the phone and I\u2019m like, \u201cHey yes we\u2019re going to go toilet papering,\u201d and she goes, \u201cI thought, I thought you guys were nice like Christian people.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cYes we\u2019re just going to toilet paper our friend\u2019s house. We do this to each other all the time. It\u2019s really fun. Your daughter will be safe.\u201d She goes, \u201cOkay, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: That\u2019s hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I know.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I love that.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Joy is contagious.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You want people to come to Christ. If you have real joy, not fake, but it\u2019s an overflow joy they\u2019re going to be drawn to that.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: That\u2019s true. Okay this is a big ask but we would love it if you could read to us Love Can the whole book.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I would love that. Thank you again for having me back.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Quina you have a daughter, how old is she?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: She\u2019s seven.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: She\u2019s seven and so we understand you\u2019re thinking, \u201cWait guys I have a seven year old,\u201d but you\u2019ve learned a lot probably and I\u2019m sure you have a lot of friends that you\u2019ve been talking to and you\u2019re discussing this is how we\u2019re bringing Jesus into our home and into our family and to our kids.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: So you can kick us off.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: The first one I got from my older sister because she had kids before me and that is normalize apologizing to your kids.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Mmm<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Normalize saying, listen even if they don\u2019t even understand they\u2019re one, two years old, you get on their level, you get on your knee, you get eye to eye and you say, \u201cHey when mommy raised her voice just now, when mommy got impatient that\u2019s on me. That was mommy\u2019s heart issue and I should have been more patient and I\u2019m so sorry. Will you forgive me?\u201d Because if it\u2019s always them seeing us as the super hero then they\u2019re going to miss the fact that Jesus is the super hero in the story of our family. So normalize, \u201cHey mommy doesn\u2019t have it all together either, and I need your forgiveness too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Hey\u2013don\u2019t go to yours yet.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I was just going to say it was part of mine. That was one of the things I had written down.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You are saying, \u201cQuina stole yours is that what you\u2019re saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Basically I said that yes. But I think I put down letting them see me repent-<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u2013to them but also to Jesus. Like let them hear my prayer. I think that creates an openness in the house of saying, \u201cWe\u2019re not perfect and we\u2019re going to mess up and we can talk about it. Isn\u2019t it good news that Jesus forgives us and He gives us do-overs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You know I love that because when you think of practical ways to bring Jesus into your kids and into your home you think Bible, church, Christian school, and you guys both went totally different place. [Laughter] I guess I\u2019m sitting with two creatives. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Ann: It\u2019s because no, it\u2019s because I had to apologize constantly. I\u2019d get mad and angry, \u201cI\u2019m so sorry. Mommy shouldn\u2019t have blown up like that,\u201d [Laughter] you know?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, yes<\/p>\n<p>Ann: But there\u2019s a good thing in that, that repentant heart. But sometimes the enemy would take that to the point of saying, \u201cWhat kind of mom are you?\u201d You know? Because Jesus is saying He\u2019s already forgiven that but the enemy likes to keep bringing it back up. Have you found that?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Oh yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: He calls you names. You\u2019re going to mess your kids up so bad. They\u2019ll never walk with Jesus<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, you\u2019re just going to repeat that cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes - generational sin, you\u2019re not changed.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, yes that\u2019s - Oh that\u2019s one of my biggest fears you know.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: What<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I feel like Satan does capitalize on that moment and say, \u201cSee, that was just like when you were a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: You saw the fear in her eyes? You just did that to her. She\u2019s going to be scared for life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: So how have you dealt with that? When you get to that point, what do you do?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, I\u2019ll pray, but I\u2019ll also talk to my husband. He\u2019s a great place to kind of softly land to be like, \u201cI feel like I\u2019m the worst mom in the world and I\u2019m just turning into this monster.\u201d I\u2019ll say the dark things right, and he\u2019ll have this phrase now at this point. We\u2019ve been married now about eight years and he\u2019ll be like, \u201cI\u2019m not afraid of you,\u201d and he doesn\u2019t mean that in a mean way-<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: He means it in a, \u201cI welcome that, because I\u2019m here to remind you who you actually are in Christ that you are not these things and that your repentance is showing the gospel. It is ministering,\u201d not that we want to be hurting our kids but when it inevitably happens.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Well what is the best thing we husbands can do when our wives are expressing the two things you just were talking about?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I think your husband just modeled it.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Is that it?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes he models it a lot, but we\u2019ve also learned because, and I\u2019m not trying to stereotype all men or anything like that, but he wants to fix it a lot of times. So we\u2019ve had to learn for him to say, \u201cDo you want me to just listen right now, or do you want me to speak into that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: He\u2019ll ask.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Dave will say, \u201cWhat do you need right now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: And it\u2019s a little uncomfortable at first to kind of exercise that muscle but then I see that as he\u2019s being very gracious because he naturally\u2013his heart is, \u201cI want to help my wife,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I feel like him offering that question helps out a lot.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: That\u2019s great. Okay we\u2019ve got one [Laughter] normalize, apologize. That\u2019s one<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Normalize, apologize. I like that.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You\u2019ve got another one?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I\u2019m going to you.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I mean one of the first things I thought, it\u2019s if you want to share your faith, lead your family, bring Jesus into your home. One of the things I\u2019ve done over the years that I feel like is helpful is when I\u201dm listening to a sermon, when I\u2019m listening to a podcast, and I\u2019m really thinking like when I\u2019m in church and there\u2019s a message being given, I take notes on my phone.<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019ll go to my phone and I\u2019ll take notes on it and why am I telling you this? Because then I share it. It\u2019s Sunday and I\u2019m at church and I\u2019m taking notes and thinking this is powerful and I\u2019m like, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m sending this to my boys. I\u2019m sending this to men that I know.\u201d But again it\u2019s just a way. It isn\u2019t just about me learning and growing if I\u2019m a dad, a husband, a wife, a mom, I\u2019ve got people that I can share this with. I\u2019ve done that when I was the Detroit Lions Chaplain. I would even say to the guys at chapel, \u201cAnything that I\u2019m saying that you want, I\u2019ve got my notes I\u2019ll text it to you.\u201d so everybody in the room would say, \u201cText me that entire message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: It was a way to take what I\u2019m learning and what God is saying to me and teaching me, and sharing it. We live in a digital world where that makes it so easy. That\u2019s why I don\u2019t write notes, because it\u2019s so much harder unless you take a picture and then send it but I\u2019m always, I\u2019m always doing it digitally.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Okay, mine was super similar to that.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Is this the third one because we have two out of five<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Well, no it\u2019s kind of the same because mine was talking to the kids about everything Jesus is teaching me<\/p>\n<p>Dave: \u2013hmm<\/p>\n<p>Ann: So it\u2019s basically the same thing. When I\u2019m not overflowing and talking about something God has done or Jesus has said or that He\u2019s doing in my life, I realize, Ohh, I\u2019m not taping in to Him,\u201d which is so easy for all of us to do. But for me it was a little bit of a\u2013it was like a temperature gauge of, \u201cAhh, I\u2019m not connected to the Father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I think one of the things that I really like doing is sharing with them stories of what God did that day and you know this, whether I paid for someone\u2019s lunch, or I paid for someone\u2019s groceries. I want them to see that our love for Jesus is something that\u2019s active. It\u2019s not passive. It\u2019s something that compels us as we love people and we see people we notice them. We say things to them that God would say. I wanted that to be a normal part of the Christian life. See I get teary talking about it.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I was going to say you\u2019re getting teary about what part of it?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: This is all we\u2019re doing here today. [Laughter] We\u2019re just crying and talking.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Is it the passing it on to your children or the reaching out and touching people?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I think it\u2019s one of the greatest joys that God can give us is when we love and see people the way that He would do that. And I don\u2019t feel like I was good at that growing up because I was so self-centered that I couldn\u2019t be others-centered and see the beauty in the people around me whether they\u2019re Christian or not it doesn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Wow. Right, right.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Even if it\u2019s a homeless person sitting on the street and saying, \u201cI see you,\u201d and letting our kids see that that\u2019s normal in the Christian life.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: We\u2019ve got two, we\u2019re back to Quina.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Whoo that\u2019s good.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: That\u2019s kind of two and a half, three.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Two point five.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: There you go.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Two point five. [Laughter] I like that. We\u2019re halfway done.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I have one that I was thinking about when maybe when Jael my daughter was a little bit younger but when we had more time to take walks together, but if you\u2019re in a place where you can take a walk I love doing this with little kids.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Ahhh.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: \u201cYou see that tree over there? See that bird?\u201d and depending on the age it might just be, \u201cWho do you think made that?<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Who made that? Oh God made that. Did you know He made?\u201d \u201cWait mommy did He actually make the sky?\u201d and you know just continuing. I think about was it in Deuteronomy when He talks about, \u201cAs you rise, as you sit-<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Deuteronomy 6<\/p>\n<p>Quina: \u2013as you walk, as you,\u201d it\u2019s the Word of God. So I\u2019ve taken that a bit to heart. So literally we\u2019ll go walking. I love nature, so walking and being about to talk about, \u201cCan you believe God made all these different kinds of leaves?\u201d Or these kinds of you know, depending on where you live you can point to anything. I like that and then also with that maybe this will round out the point, the other point five [laughter] but when you see an item like whether it\u2019s maybe you see a bird or you see whatever, \u201cYou know the story in the Bible that\u2019s like that?\u201d and it kind of always goes back to storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Oh that\u2019s good.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: You know that reminds me of this story and making not about, \u2018I\u2019 teacher \u2013 \u2018you\u2019 student, you must now listen and receive my wisdom.\u201d It\u2019s not like that. [Laughter] That was my authority voice. So I\u2019m saying don\u2019t do that. I\u2019m saying come side by side and say, \u201cMan that reminds me of this one story in the Bible. Have you heard of...?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: You\u2019re such a good storyteller. Your voice is so good. When she was reading parts of her book weren\u2019t you like I wish she would read like that to me every night.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Oh yes. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Quina: If someone wants me, like I would love that. [Laughter] We\u2019re reading through Chronicles of Narnia right now at night.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Oh wow.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Maybe that\u2019s the other, is read through some good literature that will kind of spark that conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Well you know I\u2019ve got one. Get Quina\u2019s book [Laughter] and read them with your kids.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: There you go. Is this number four?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I\u2019m not mad at that one.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Okay let\u2019s say that can be one, reading.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes though, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I did it whenever we were home every single night.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: \u2013every night<\/p>\n<p>Dave: We would do this with our boys.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We would lay in our bed. Sometimes all three were in my bed or I\u2019d take turns with them. But especially reading some literature like Chronicles of Narnia - whoo those are so good.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes. And then I cry and then I\u2019m like\u2013the other night, what was it in, we just finished The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and when it talks about when Aslan dies and how Susan and Lucy felt, the darkness and the pain and like you\u2019ll never be happy again. The way CS Lewis describes it of course I started crying while I read it, I\u2019m like, \u201cBaby I\u2019m sorry,\u201d I just started crying.<\/p>\n<p>Amazingly as a seven year old she\u2019s just like, \u201cIt\u2019s okay. You can cry,\u201d and I was like, \u201cWow.\u201d Something that we\u2019ve been trying to teach her is actually settling in. That\u2019s encouraging but being able to have those resources is such a to have the literature that we have, such a wealth of whether it\u2019s picture books or story books, whatever it may be - those things. Again it keeps going back to story.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Oh definitely. I could throw in movies as well.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: The same thing. You utilize video. You can pull it right up on your phone and say, \u201cLet\u2019s talk about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: That\u2019s really good.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Okay, you got another one?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Do you? It\u2019s your turn.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Live it.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: That\u2019s good.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: We wrote about it in our No Perfect Parents book, faith is caught rather than taught. You can teach all you want, and that\u2019s good, and we should open the Word. But they\u2019re going to follow what you live and so I\u2019m not having to do this because I\u2019m supposed to lead my family. It\u2019s like no this is who I am and it\u2019s coming out. I\u2019m in the Word and because I\u2019m in the Word God is speaking to me and I have something to give. You cannot give away what you first do not possess. I would just say man that is the greatest thing you can do, live it, and instead of looking at your kids and like they\u2019ve got to get this look in the mirror and say, \u201cAm I getting this?\u201d Because if I\u2019m getting this it\u2019ll get passed on.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: That\u2019s good.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Alright.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Alright.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I guess we have only one more left.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Joy. Bring joy into your home. I know that I could say Jesus, but Jesus is joy. So bring joy in Jesus into your home. I mean in James when it says, \u201cConsider it all joy, my brothers and sisters when you encounter various trials, knowing that\u2026\u201d I\u2019m thinking of you Quina because you\u2019ve gone through a lot, \u201cKnowing that the testing of your faith will produce endurance, you\u2019ll be perfect and complete lacking in nothing.\u201d But there\u2019s something about when our kids see us, even through trial, there\u2019s a contentment and a joy in our\u2013that we\u2019re looking to Jesus. So that\u2019s part of it but the other part is just having fun as a family. We had fun.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We would do things that our kids, our neighbor kids would hang out at our house all the time, because we were doing crazy stuff. [Laughter] We\u2019d have these water gun fights where we\u2019re running down the street. You\u2019re playing sports with the kids. We\u2019re playing street hockey, capture the flag. We would toilet paper our friend\u2019s houses [Laughter] as they got older because they wanted to do something risky.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: In a modest way. We didn\u2019t destroy their houses.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: No, no right, but they\u2019re little.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Shaving cream slip \u2018n slide-<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: The last day of school was shaving cream slip \u2018n slide<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I want to go to your house [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I mean when I used to drive around our cul-de-sac in our car just going around and around, [Laughter] one time I parked the car sideways in the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Like that so it\u2019s turned.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: It\u2019s turned sideways and the kids are like, \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d \u201cLet\u2019s go in the house and see which neighbor calls first to say, \u2018What are you doing?\u2019\u201d [Laughter] So we were looking maybe three minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: It was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes, and we all knew, \u201cGuess like who\u2019s calling,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Wait a minute, why\u2019s it parked sideways? Oh, okay.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Oh my goodness.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u2013and this was back when they got into middle school, high school where we\u2019re going through a drive through. This is super late at night so the lines aren\u2019t very long but I took this sticky note, this is terrible, I\u2019d probably get in trouble for this, sticky note and wrote on the sticky note. I had a sharpie with me. It said, \u201cSpeak loud right where the sticker is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Speaker broken.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I don\u2019t know if I said speaker broken because that\u2019d be lying.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: She put it on the microphone for the drive through and then we went inside to listen to people.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Oh my goodness.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And so we go inside, this is like 10:00 at night and they\u2019re screaming, \u201cI WANT A HAMBURGER,\u201d and people are-they\u2019re the workers are like, \u201cWhat, why are you screaming?\u201d You know we\u2019re shaking we\u2019re laughing so hard.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Oh my goodness.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: So there\u2019s parts of that that I wanted our kids to know. We love Jesus and this isn\u2019t this boring place. We have joy. We want this to be a place that attracts everybody because that love and joy that Jesus brings is something that\u2019s contagious.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes. That same hospitality that the family that where I first heard the gospel that they showed me, that\u2019s something that I\u2019ve been trying to emulate as well in the neighborhoods that we\u2019ve lived in. One of the biggest privileges to me is when one of the middle school girls in my old neighborhoods call me, multiple ones have called me, \u201cYou\u2019re like my neighborhood mom. Like I can talk to you about my stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our doors are open. My husband and I just had a big you know, kind of hospitality policy like if they\u2019re neighbors like you\u2019re welcome in. We might just have a messy day, we might have a rough day, we might have a great day, but you\u2019re welcome into our space.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I think what happens when our kids get older, we\u2019ve shared this a few times but their friends are hurting and they have stories. But when you're open and you\u2019re watching your kid\u2019s friends, just to sit down and say just kind of where you were Quina. \u201cHey, you know it seems like life seems heavy to you. Am I correct? Can I pray for you? Is anything going on?\u201d Man these teenagers will cry. They may not pour it out to their parents but sometimes they\u2019ll pour it out to you.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Oh yes, yes. That\u2019s so true, I know I was like that.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Really?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes, my mom could have been telling me the same exact thing that you told me but when you said it, \u201cDo you realize - this is a good point,\u201d and just open up to others.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Ohh, I\u2019d like to live on your street. Isn\u2019t she cool?<\/p>\n<p>Quina: You with the water gun fight. Yes I\u2019m going to take some of these ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Do it! [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We had one little girl that lived on the corner, I think maybe in the fourth grade.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Oh no.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: She comes to our house and we go, \u201cWe\u2019re going toilet papering tonight. Everybody get in the car,\u201d and she, she raises her hand and goes, \u201cUm, could I come with you?\u201d and so I\u2019m like, \u201cWell we have to call your mom,\u201d and so she gets on the phone and she goes, \u201cMy mom doesn\u2019t believe me because Dave\u2019s the pastor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[Laughter] So I get on the phone and I\u2019m like, \u201cHey yes we\u2019re going to go toilet papering,\u201d and she goes, \u201cI thought, I thought you guys were nice like Christian people.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cYes we\u2019re just going to toilet paper our friend\u2019s house. We do this to each other all the time. It\u2019s really fun. Your daughter will be safe.\u201d She goes, \u201cOkay, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quina: That\u2019s hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I know.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I love that.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Joy is contagious.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You want people to come to Christ. If you have real joy, not fake, but it\u2019s an overflow joy they\u2019re going to be drawn to that.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: That\u2019s true. Okay this is a big ask but we would love it if you could read to us Love Can the whole book.<\/p>\n<p>Quina: I would love that.
