[Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Okay.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I\u2019m just kidding!<\/p>\n<p>Shelby: Welcome to FamilyLife Today, where we want to help you pursue the relationships that matter most. I had so many! [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Dave: That\u2019s not it?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I just didn\u2019t think I was worthy. And we talked about that a little bit yesterday, just because of abuse. No, I totally believed that.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes, I mean\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Ann: It\u2019s because\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Those two are connected for sure, but I remember I would get so frustrated.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: You\u2019d get mad at me.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I\u2019d say, \u201cYou\u2019re so pretty,\u201d or \u201cYou\u2019re so beautiful,\u201d and you\u2019d say, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I\u2019d even say, \u201cDon\u2019t say that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I used to laugh, like, \u201cYes, whatever! She knows\u2014\u201d And then it hit me. It was years. I was like, \u201cOh, my goodness! She doesn\u2019t believe it. She doesn\u2019t know.\u201d You really believed a lie.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I didn\u2019t even like\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: And I did not believe it was possible.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I didn\u2019t even like you saying it.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I know.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I was like, \u201cJust be quiet. Don\u2019t even say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: So, why are we bringing this up?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Because today, we\u2019re going to talk again with Dannah Gresh. Dannah, welcome to FamilyLife Today.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I am so glad to be back. And you are gorgeous!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: [Laughing] You\u2019re so\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Don\u2019t you think!?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Knock-dead.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: No kidding!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Gorgeous. It\u2019s so hilarious to me how just obvious Satan\u2019s lies are to other people. It\u2019s always the beautiful women that think they\u2019re ugly; it\u2019s always the smart guys who think they\u2019re stupid! [Laughter] Do you know what I\u2019m saying? Have you not noticed that?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes, for sure.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: But we can\u2019t see our own deception.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And I do believe that Satan has a piece in wanting us to shut down.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: He\u2019s whispering to us, just like in the garden. He\u2019s whispering lies, as he whispered to Adam and Eve.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cDid God really say\u2014?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Right.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: You know, that kind of lie in Genesis.<\/p>\n<p>Well, let me say, too, that Dannah is back with us in the studio. Yesterday, we talked about her book called Lies Girls Believe. It\u2019s a workbook, really.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: It\u2019s called Lies Girls Believe and the Truth that Sets Them Free.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes; I want to know this, Dannah: have you ever struggled with the same lie?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Oh, terribly! I could not look in the mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: What!?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: To this day, I can put my mascara on without looking in the mirror, because that\u2019s how I learned to do it in high school.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: No!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I hated what I saw! If I saw myself in the mirror, I would be in the fetal position.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: What!?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: You\u2019re so pretty!<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Really?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I did that.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: What!?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Oh, it was terrible. And do you know when it changed?<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes, I want to know.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: In college, I started reading my Bible every day. I didn\u2019t like\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: It\u2019s a better mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: It\u2019s a much better mirror. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Dave: James says\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: It\u2019s a better mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: He calls it a mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes, exactly! And I didn\u2019t do it because I felt ugly. I did it because I felt drawn to the Word. But one day, I walked past the mirror, and I was like, \u201cOh, I just looked at myself, and I didn\u2019t melt down.\u201d Now, I didn\u2019t look at myself and think, \u201cHey, Hottie!\u201d [Laughter] But I was able to look at myself. As the weeks went on, I thought, \u201cIt\u2019s not that I\u2019m not hating what I see. It\u2019s that I actually see good in what I see.\u201d The Word changed that lie, not by me specifically reading something about my beauty, but just by me reading the Word.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I\u2019ve gotten into a new habit now: when I discover, \u201cUgh! Look at this lie I\u2019m believing!\u201d I\u2019ll ask God, \u201cGod, will you show me the first time I started believing that lie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And He\u2019ll answer in a lot of different ways: through His Word, or maybe a memory will pop up; but that one was an easy one. I think our listeners have heard me say it. I was 15, getting ready to have pictures taken for cheerleading, for the program.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I\u2019m still mad about this moment!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: You know, I was super-insecure at 15! But anyway, we were all getting ready in the house, and we all went out to have the pictures taken, but I forgot something in the house. When I had walked in the house earlier in the day, my friend\u2019s mom saw me, and she said, \u201cOh, Ann, you look so cute!\u201d I said, \u201cOh, thanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But then, when I went back in the house, and everyone was gone except my friend\u2019s mom and her sister. I could hear them talking, and they didn\u2019t know I was in the house. I heard the sister say, \u201cWhy would you tell Ann she\u2019s cute when she\u2019s so ugly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Ohhhh!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And her mom said, \u201cI know, but she tries hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Nooo!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And then I went out to have my picture taken. Ever since then, I\u2019ve thought, \u201cI\u2019m ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: That will leave a mark.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes, that will leave a mark.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cAnd if people tell me I\u2019m not ugly, they\u2019re lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I want to go back there and just tear down that house! Even right now, when I hear that, I\u2019m so mad!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Because I\u2019ve lived with her, and she\u2019s lived through that lie.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: But I remember, I was walking with my best friend, and one time, she said, \u201cYou know, Ann? I think that what we need to do as women is gaze at God\u2019s Word and glance at ourselves in the mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I love it!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cBut what we end up doing is we gaze at ourselves in the mirror, and we just glance sometimes at God\u2019s Word,\u201d if we\u2019re even in the Word. If we\u2019re going to do that, then we\u2019re not going to hear the Truth of who God says we are.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes!<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a verse\u2014is it 1 Peter 3: 3-4?\u2014that says \u201cour beauty shouldn\u2019t be of braided hair\u201d\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u201c\u2014and gold jewels and fine clothes, but that of a gentle and quiet spirit.\u201d And a challenge I give 7\u201312-year-old girls sometimes is, \u201cDid you spend more time today in God\u2019s Word, grooming your heart, making it gentle and quiet, or did you spend more time today in front of the mirror, making your hair braided or putting on cute clothes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s something that we never really outgrow, is it?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: No.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Because if we\u2019re more obsessed with what we see in the mirror than what we read in the Word, the feeling of lack of beauty is going to be there.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And I think, at the end of the day, it\u2019s a fist fight between our Creator\u2014who in Psalm 139 says, \u201cI am fearfully and wonderfully made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cFearfully and wonderfully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And then, think about this: the psalmist says, \u201cI know it full well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Full well.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And Satan looks at us and says, \u201cI don\u2019t want them to know they\u2019re fearfully and wonderfully made. I want them not to know they\u2019re made in the image of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u201cI want them to have amnesia and to forget!\u201d So, for women especially, he strikes at the heart of our sense of our beauty.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: So, girls are believing this lie, that they\u2019re not beautiful?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Oh, yes!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Maybe even they\u2019re believing their worth comes from their outward image.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: When I was writing Lies Young Women Believe for teenage girls, we did focus groups across the country. And beautiful or not beautiful, girls believed, \u201cI will have more worth if I\u2019m physically beautiful.\u201d That is a lie, because our beauty fades. Was it 1rst or 2nd Corinthians that says, \u201cOutwardly, I\u2019m wasting away\u2014?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cWasting away; but inwardly\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u201cBut inwardly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: [Laughing] We are doing the same thing!<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You two!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We\u2019re being renewed!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes! We\u2019re being renewed day by day.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Day by day!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: If we could just grab onto that, whatever stage of life you\u2019re in\u2014yes, you are becoming less physically, but this physical body is not who you really are. Who you really are is your spirit and your soul! And as that is becoming stronger and more built up, even if this is fading away, you can feel your worth.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I mean, how do moms do that? You two are moms. How does a mom help guide a young woman, a girl, to stop believing the lies? Obviously, replace it with Scripture.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: But how do you do that practically?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I tell girls (in the book), \u201cJesus wants to be the boss of your thoughts.\u201d And that\u2019s biblical, right? Because we\u2019re supposed to take every thought captive to be obedient to the voice of Christ. When we are letting ourselves feed on that Twitter feed, or that TikTok feed, or that Instagram feed, and we\u2019re mindlessly scrolling and comparing ourselves every single time\u2014and it\u2019s not just 13-year-old girls, but 33-year-old moms are doing this! Right? [Laughter]\u2014we are letting that medium be the boss of our thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Being discipled by it.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes, yes. You\u2019re being discipled by it, totally!<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And so, when Satan lied to Eve, there was one mouthpiece he used for lies, and that was a snake; but today, Satan has many mouthpieces, and many means of introducing lies to us. If we aren\u2019t introducing our daughters to the discipline of meditating on the Word of God.<\/p>\n<p>When I wrote Lies Girls Believe, I asked moms and daughters\u2014I did focus groups; I did surveys with girls\u2014and 70% of these girls were not reading their Bibles (eight- to twelve-year-old girls); 30% of them were.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I\u2019m surprised 30% are reading their Bibles.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I mean, I\u2019m glad that at least\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You thought it was lower.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I thought it was lower.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: You thought it was lower. Well, here\u2019s the thing: we learn habits when we\u2019re young, right? We learn to brush our teeth, to say \u201cthank you,\u201d to make our bed, to meet deadlines, to do our homework, all that stuff, because habits make us!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We carry them into adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Right! Is there any more important habit than opening our Bible every day and exposing our mind to truth in a world that\u2019s saturated with lies?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And you\u2019re telling this to moms!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I\u2019m telling this to moms!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And the moms are saying, \u201cWell, but there\u2019s nothing out there!\u201d Well, when I wrote Lies Girls Believe, there wasn\u2019t really a lot out there for eight- to twelve-year-old girls. Since then, my ministry, True Girl, has developed a subscription box where girls get daily devos every day.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Wow, that\u2019s so good!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And it\u2019s written for eight- to twelve-year-old girls. I don\u2019t care if they use my devos; I don\u2019t care what they use. It\u2019s really a spiritual discipline, but it\u2019s a habit.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes. How would you do that\u2014if you haven\u2019t done that before, how would a mom go about doing that?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Well, that\u2019s why we created\u2014we started writing Bible studies. Right after I wrote Lies Girls Believe, I started writing Bible studies. I\u2019ve got three out, and I\u2019ve got another coming out this year that are written for that age group (8 to 12) to study the whole book of Ruth, to study the whole life of Miriam, the whole life of Mary. Teaching her that\u2014and you know how cool it is when you start studying the Word of God and you\u2019re like, \u201cI get it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u201cI see something I didn\u2019t understand before!\u201d You get kind of drawn to it when you start to experience the power of it. I want little girls to feel that! So, we started the devos, we started the Bible studies. Those tools are available at MyTrueGirl.com, but you know, you can look online, and there are lots of different tools you can use. I do think you need tools. I mean, it\u2019s hard for me as a\u2014well, let\u2019s not say my age! [Laughter] But at my age, it\u2019s hard for me to just take my Bible sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>There are times when the Lord has me just in the Word, and that\u2019s it. But generally, I\u2019m using a prayer journal, or I\u2019m using a Bible study; I\u2019m using some kind of tool. So, \u201ctool\u201d your daughter up! Give her the tools she needs.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Tool her up!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes, even if it\u2019s just a little diary, and you\u2019re like, \u201cInstead of writing about yourself like most girls do when they write in a diary, just write, \u2018Dear God, Today I read this Bible verse. Here\u2019s what I think it means.\u2019\u201d And just start there. It\u2019s that simple! My mom did that for me when I was eight years old.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Ahhh!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And I look back and think, \u201cWhat a gift! What a gift!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: That\u2019s amazing!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And she just handed me a Children\u2019s Daily Bread. She said, \u201cYou\u2019re supposed to read this every day, because you\u2019re a Christian.\u201d I said, \u201cI am?\u201d Okay. [Laughter] And I did. And I still have that pattern\/habit in my life. It\u2019s a lifeline in a world full of lies.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Let\u2019s talk about the lies that moms believe.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Oh, yes!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Because I\u2019m wondering if, as moms, we get so busy; we\u2019ve got kids going on; we\u2019ve got work; we\u2019ve got activities for our kids. And a mom\u2019s thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t even have time to read my Bible!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You\u2019ve got a husband chasing you around the house, saying, \u201cWhat about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: [Laughing] \u201cAnd now you want me to get my kids to read the Bible, too?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cI feel all this weight.\u201d Encourage her.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Well, here\u2019s what my encouragement would be: \u201cYou can not disciple your daughter to live in Truth if you are not living in Truth.\u201d When I wrote Lies Girls Believe, I did focus groups in 11 cities. We just gathered 100 moms or so in each city, and we had these little clickers so that they could respond to me anonymously when I would ask a question, and I could measure\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Oh, that\u2019s good!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u2014what percentage of moms were answering which way.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And I identified the fact that moms were believing lies about being a mom. One of the biggest lies about being a mom was, \u201cI am not worthy to disciple my daughter in [fill in the blank]\u201d (with whatever your teenage sin or trauma was). For me, it would be sexual sin. \u201cI am not worthy of teaching my children to learn sexual integrity, because I didn\u2019t when I was a teenager.\u201d For other moms, it was, \u201cI am not worthy to disciple my daughter in having a healthy body image issue, because I had an eating disorder.\u201d \u201cI am not adequate to disciple my daughter in substance abuse or porn or whatever, because I struggled with that thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That lie, that shame, was still strangling her from discipling her daughter in Truth! If you don\u2019t operate in Truth, and if you don\u2019t overcome that shame from your past, you\u2019re just going to pass it on to your daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: A lot of times, they think, \u201cIf I don\u2019t talk to her about porn,\u201d or \u201cIf I don\u2019t talk to her about being boy crazy,\u201d or the thing that I struggled with, then there won\u2019t be an opportunity for lies to present themselves. Well, really, how do you know if you don\u2019t talk to your daughter about something? How do you know what she does or doesn\u2019t believe?<\/p>\n<p>So, I would just challenge you to get into God\u2019s Word. If you\u2019re feeling inadequate, insecure, insufficient\u2014all the \u201cins,\u201d really, as a mom. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: That means that you\u2019re believing lies about yourself, and you need your heart to be set free. You can get into the Word. Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth\u2014we mentioned this yesterday\u2014has a book called Lies Women Believe. It really teaches you, as an adult woman, how to process through the lies. I wrote a mom\u2019s guide to Lies Girls Believe that I did identify (in) the top three lies moms believe.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: What are they?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Well, one of them was, \u201cI can or can\u2019t control what my daughter believes about [blank].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Hmm.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And that\u2019s that\u2014have you ever had those yo-yo days as a mom where, at the beginning of the day, you deserve a \u201cMom of the Year\u201d award, but at the end of the day\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u2014you were the \u201cworst mom ever!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes! Most days were like that when our kids were little.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes, so you get this paralysis that, \u201cI can control it,\u201d or \u201cI can\u2019t control it.\u201d I guess the paralysis is when you can\u2019t control it. You get this pride of \u201cI am in control of my daughter\u2019s belief system.\u201d Then, in the same day, you might also get the paralysis of, \u201cUgh! I\u2019ve got nothing to contribute here!\u201d So, that yo-yo feeling that we have as a mom was one of the lies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not capable of discipling her in [fill in the blank], because I have sin in that area of my life.\u201d Or here\u2019s one of the scary ones\u2014I think this is the scariest: \u201cMy daughter is not struggling like other girls.\u201d When I asked moms, \u201cAre you concerned about girls believing lies today?\u201d eighty percent of them said, \u201cOh, yes!\u201d Then I said, \u201cIs your daughter falling prey to the lies of the culture?\u201d Eighty percent of them said, \u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Oh!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And I was thinking, \u201cWell, that\u2019s not\u2014that\u2014that\u2019s not possible!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Those don\u2019t go together, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: So, then I started asking them questions about submission, like, \u201cDoes your daughter obey you and your husband?\u201d And stories would come out about them being disobedient at school, treating dad like a brother instead of a father figure; and a lot of those moms were saying, \u201cI think she\u2019s repeating the behavior she\u2019s seeing in me in the way they treat their dad.\u201d And they were falling under some conviction. But there was just this overall sense that their daughter wasn\u2019t sinning.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Their daughter wasn\u2019t believing the lies. And yet, when we started talking about a specific area like submission, 53% of them now said, \u201cOh, yes! My daughter is really struggling with lies, and I need to do something about it.\u201d So, we need to be objective as moms.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I think that is interesting, too, because as a mom of boys\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u2014I can remember being with groups of women when my boys got older, and we were talking about pornography. So, I\u2019m with moms that have boys between the ages of 14 and 19, and I remember asking, \u201cWhat\u2019s the discussion like about pornography in your home?\u201d And the majority of the moms said, \u201cOh, my son doesn\u2019t struggle. He never has struggled.\u201d I remember telling Dave that, and he said, \u201cUhhh.\u201d [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes, because\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And I remember\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Can I say what I think about it?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u201cUhhh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Exactly! [Laughter] So, I said, \u201cYou know, I\u2019m just going to say, statistically speaking\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u2014\u201calmost every boy that age has in this time of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Right.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cIn the culture that we\u2019re living in.\u201d But I was amazed, like, \u201cWhat?! You don\u2019t think that the world is impacting them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Is it denial? Is it almost like, \u201cI don\u2019t want to know, because then I don\u2019t have to deal with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I think there is an element of denial. Here\u2019s the thing: so, Adam and Eve were in this perfect garden, right? Where there had never been sin. God doesn\u2019t say to them, \u201cLet me tell you how ugly and gory death is.\u201d But He does say, \u201cDon\u2019t eat of that tree, or you will surely die.\u201d So, He\u2019s not afraid to talk about the danger, right? Just not with detail.<\/p>\n<p>What we fear as parents is, \u201cIf I\u2019m going to talk to my kids about porn, they\u2019re going to have pictures in their head of what porn is.\u201d No, they\u2019re not! You can say something like, \u201cHey, the internet has good pictures and bad pictures. I want to know if you ever see a picture that you think is a bad picture.\u201d \u201cWell, how will I know it\u2019s a bad picture?\u201d \u201cWell, you might think, \u2018Am I supposed to be seeing this?\u201d Or you might think, \u201cI don\u2019t think that I would want to watch this or see this if mom were here or if dad were here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And this is a discussion for boys and girls.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Oh, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Oh, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: There are easy ways to talk to them about warning them about that without robbing them of their innocence. That\u2019s what God models for us in the garden of Eden, right? So, we have to be objective enough to know, \u201cThis child lives in this world, which is full of lies. And the Bible says all of us are sinners. This child\u2019s going to fall; this child\u2019s going to fail. I have to do everything I can to plant Truth in them so that that\u2019s as infrequent as possible, and there\u2019s as little brokenness as there can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But I also have to be objective and realize that, just like Adam and Eve fell when they had a perfect Father, in a perfect garden, my child is going to fail. When we lose the objectivity, we\u2019re not there. We don\u2019t read the tell-tale signs when there are \u201csticky\u201d emotions that are leading them toward acting out on a lie. And we\u2019re not ready to run in with the grace and the warm, fur garments to comfort them the way that God did in the garden of Eden.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes. As I\u2019m listening, I\u2019m just thinking\u2014and you probably feel this, too, Dannah\u2014\u201cI want to call all moms to step into this!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We\u2019re living in a day and age\u2014; we always have, but I just feel like at alarming rates, our girls are falling to anxiety and depression. And we, as moms, I think the place we start is on our knees. Start praying for your daughters!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And let them know you\u2019re story of, \u201cThis is something I believed growing up. How are you doing with this lie?\u201d Be in God\u2019s Word. I love your admonition to \u201cbe in the Word.\u201d You know, there are a lot of great tools out that can help us get in the Word, but also help get our kids in the Word, too.<\/p>\n<p>[Musical interlude]<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I loved having Dannah Gresh with us today, talking about the lies girls believe.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I could tell you loved it!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I know!<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I sort of wanted to get out of the way and just let you two women (you two moms) talk about these lies.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Because we need\u2014our daughters, our granddaughters, our sisters; we need\u2014to hear it ourselves, the Truth of what God says, and even identifying the lies.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I think that\u2019s critical.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: All of the lies you talked about, men and boys believe as well, and we need the Truth as well.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And, as I\u2019m thinking about that, maybe you\u2019re identifying with some of the lies as well, and maybe you\u2019re a little older now, and you\u2019re thinking, \u201cOh, man! I remember the lies I believed as a young mom, as a young woman!\u201d Maybe even, financially, you\u2019re in a place that you\u2019re thinking, \u201cI could help these younger women!\u201d Or you\u2019re asking the question, \u201cCould I help these younger women?\u201d And I\u2019m saying, \u201cYes!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We have people who are supporting us financially monthly. I had so many! [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Dave: That\u2019s not it?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I just didn\u2019t think I was worthy. And we talked about that a little bit yesterday, just because of abuse. No, I totally believed that.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes, I mean\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Ann: It\u2019s because\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Those two are connected for sure, but I remember I would get so frustrated.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: You\u2019d get mad at me.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I\u2019d say, \u201cYou\u2019re so pretty,\u201d or \u201cYou\u2019re so beautiful,\u201d and you\u2019d say, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I\u2019d even say, \u201cDon\u2019t say that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I used to laugh, like, \u201cYes, whatever! She knows\u2014\u201d And then it hit me. It was years. I was like, \u201cOh, my goodness! She doesn\u2019t believe it. She doesn\u2019t know.\u201d You really believed a lie.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I didn\u2019t even like\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: And I did not believe it was possible.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I didn\u2019t even like you saying it.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I know.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I was like, \u201cJust be quiet. Don\u2019t even say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: So, why are we bringing this up?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Because today, we\u2019re going to talk again with Dannah Gresh. Dannah, welcome to FamilyLife Today.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I am so glad to be back. And you are gorgeous!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: [Laughing] You\u2019re so\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Don\u2019t you think!?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Knock-dead.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: No kidding!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Gorgeous. It\u2019s so hilarious to me how just obvious Satan\u2019s lies are to other people. It\u2019s always the beautiful women that think they\u2019re ugly; it\u2019s always the smart guys who think they\u2019re stupid! [Laughter] Do you know what I\u2019m saying? Have you not noticed that?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes, for sure.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: But we can\u2019t see our own deception.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And I do believe that Satan has a piece in wanting us to shut down.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: He\u2019s whispering to us, just like in the garden. He\u2019s whispering lies, as he whispered to Adam and Eve.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cDid God really say\u2014?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Right.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: You know, that kind of lie in Genesis.<\/p>\n<p>Well, let me say, too, that Dannah is back with us in the studio. Yesterday, we talked about her book called Lies Girls Believe. It\u2019s a workbook, really.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: It\u2019s called Lies Girls Believe and the Truth that Sets Them Free.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes; I want to know this, Dannah: have you ever struggled with the same lie?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Oh, terribly! I could not look in the mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: What!?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: To this day, I can put my mascara on without looking in the mirror, because that\u2019s how I learned to do it in high school.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: No!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I hated what I saw! If I saw myself in the mirror, I would be in the fetal position.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: What!?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: You\u2019re so pretty!<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Really?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I did that.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: What!?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Oh, it was terrible. And do you know when it changed?<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes, I want to know.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: In college, I started reading my Bible every day. I didn\u2019t like\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: It\u2019s a better mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: It\u2019s a much better mirror. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Dave: James says\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: It\u2019s a better mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: He calls it a mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes, exactly! And I didn\u2019t do it because I felt ugly. I did it because I felt drawn to the Word. But one day, I walked past the mirror, and I was like, \u201cOh, I just looked at myself, and I didn\u2019t melt down.\u201d Now, I didn\u2019t look at myself and think, \u201cHey, Hottie!\u201d [Laughter] But I was able to look at myself. As the weeks went on, I thought, \u201cIt\u2019s not that I\u2019m not hating what I see. It\u2019s that I actually see good in what I see.\u201d The Word changed that lie, not by me specifically reading something about my beauty, but just by me reading the Word.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I\u2019ve gotten into a new habit now: when I discover, \u201cUgh! Look at this lie I\u2019m believing!\u201d I\u2019ll ask God, \u201cGod, will you show me the first time I started believing that lie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And He\u2019ll answer in a lot of different ways: through His Word, or maybe a memory will pop up; but that one was an easy one. I think our listeners have heard me say it. I was 15, getting ready to have pictures taken for cheerleading, for the program.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I\u2019m still mad about this moment!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: You know, I was super-insecure at 15! But anyway, we were all getting ready in the house, and we all went out to have the pictures taken, but I forgot something in the house. When I had walked in the house earlier in the day, my friend\u2019s mom saw me, and she said, \u201cOh, Ann, you look so cute!\u201d I said, \u201cOh, thanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But then, when I went back in the house, and everyone was gone except my friend\u2019s mom and her sister. I could hear them talking, and they didn\u2019t know I was in the house. I heard the sister say, \u201cWhy would you tell Ann she\u2019s cute when she\u2019s so ugly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Ohhhh!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And her mom said, \u201cI know, but she tries hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Nooo!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And then I went out to have my picture taken. Ever since then, I\u2019ve thought, \u201cI\u2019m ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: That will leave a mark.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes, that will leave a mark.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cAnd if people tell me I\u2019m not ugly, they\u2019re lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I want to go back there and just tear down that house! Even right now, when I hear that, I\u2019m so mad!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Because I\u2019ve lived with her, and she\u2019s lived through that lie.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: But I remember, I was walking with my best friend, and one time, she said, \u201cYou know, Ann? I think that what we need to do as women is gaze at God\u2019s Word and glance at ourselves in the mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I love it!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cBut what we end up doing is we gaze at ourselves in the mirror, and we just glance sometimes at God\u2019s Word,\u201d if we\u2019re even in the Word. If we\u2019re going to do that, then we\u2019re not going to hear the Truth of who God says we are.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes!<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a verse\u2014is it 1 Peter 3: 3-4?\u2014that says \u201cour beauty shouldn\u2019t be of braided hair\u201d\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u201c\u2014and gold jewels and fine clothes, but that of a gentle and quiet spirit.\u201d And a challenge I give 7\u201312-year-old girls sometimes is, \u201cDid you spend more time today in God\u2019s Word, grooming your heart, making it gentle and quiet, or did you spend more time today in front of the mirror, making your hair braided or putting on cute clothes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s something that we never really outgrow, is it?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: No.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Because if we\u2019re more obsessed with what we see in the mirror than what we read in the Word, the feeling of lack of beauty is going to be there.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And I think, at the end of the day, it\u2019s a fist fight between our Creator\u2014who in Psalm 139 says, \u201cI am fearfully and wonderfully made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cFearfully and wonderfully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And then, think about this: the psalmist says, \u201cI know it full well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Full well.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And Satan looks at us and says, \u201cI don\u2019t want them to know they\u2019re fearfully and wonderfully made. I want them not to know they\u2019re made in the image of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u201cI want them to have amnesia and to forget!\u201d So, for women especially, he strikes at the heart of our sense of our beauty.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: So, girls are believing this lie, that they\u2019re not beautiful?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Oh, yes!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Maybe even they\u2019re believing their worth comes from their outward image.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: When I was writing Lies Young Women Believe for teenage girls, we did focus groups across the country. And beautiful or not beautiful, girls believed, \u201cI will have more worth if I\u2019m physically beautiful.\u201d That is a lie, because our beauty fades. Was it 1rst or 2nd Corinthians that says, \u201cOutwardly, I\u2019m wasting away\u2014?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cWasting away; but inwardly\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u201cBut inwardly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: [Laughing] We are doing the same thing!<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You two!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We\u2019re being renewed!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes! We\u2019re being renewed day by day.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Day by day!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: If we could just grab onto that, whatever stage of life you\u2019re in\u2014yes, you are becoming less physically, but this physical body is not who you really are. Who you really are is your spirit and your soul! And as that is becoming stronger and more built up, even if this is fading away, you can feel your worth.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I mean, how do moms do that? You two are moms. How does a mom help guide a young woman, a girl, to stop believing the lies? Obviously, replace it with Scripture.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: But how do you do that practically?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I tell girls (in the book), \u201cJesus wants to be the boss of your thoughts.\u201d And that\u2019s biblical, right? Because we\u2019re supposed to take every thought captive to be obedient to the voice of Christ. When we are letting ourselves feed on that Twitter feed, or that TikTok feed, or that Instagram feed, and we\u2019re mindlessly scrolling and comparing ourselves every single time\u2014and it\u2019s not just 13-year-old girls, but 33-year-old moms are doing this! Right? [Laughter]\u2014we are letting that medium be the boss of our thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Being discipled by it.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes, yes. You\u2019re being discipled by it, totally!<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And so, when Satan lied to Eve, there was one mouthpiece he used for lies, and that was a snake; but today, Satan has many mouthpieces, and many means of introducing lies to us. If we aren\u2019t introducing our daughters to the discipline of meditating on the Word of God.<\/p>\n<p>When I wrote Lies Girls Believe, I asked moms and daughters\u2014I did focus groups; I did surveys with girls\u2014and 70% of these girls were not reading their Bibles (eight- to twelve-year-old girls); 30% of them were.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I\u2019m surprised 30% are reading their Bibles.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I mean, I\u2019m glad that at least\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You thought it was lower.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I thought it was lower.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: You thought it was lower. Well, here\u2019s the thing: we learn habits when we\u2019re young, right? We learn to brush our teeth, to say \u201cthank you,\u201d to make our bed, to meet deadlines, to do our homework, all that stuff, because habits make us!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We carry them into adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Right! Is there any more important habit than opening our Bible every day and exposing our mind to truth in a world that\u2019s saturated with lies?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And you\u2019re telling this to moms!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I\u2019m telling this to moms!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And the moms are saying, \u201cWell, but there\u2019s nothing out there!\u201d Well, when I wrote Lies Girls Believe, there wasn\u2019t really a lot out there for eight- to twelve-year-old girls. Since then, my ministry, True Girl, has developed a subscription box where girls get daily devos every day.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Wow, that\u2019s so good!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And it\u2019s written for eight- to twelve-year-old girls. I don\u2019t care if they use my devos; I don\u2019t care what they use. It\u2019s really a spiritual discipline, but it\u2019s a habit.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes. How would you do that\u2014if you haven\u2019t done that before, how would a mom go about doing that?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Well, that\u2019s why we created\u2014we started writing Bible studies. Right after I wrote Lies Girls Believe, I started writing Bible studies. I\u2019ve got three out, and I\u2019ve got another coming out this year that are written for that age group (8 to 12) to study the whole book of Ruth, to study the whole life of Miriam, the whole life of Mary. Teaching her that\u2014and you know how cool it is when you start studying the Word of God and you\u2019re like, \u201cI get it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u201cI see something I didn\u2019t understand before!\u201d You get kind of drawn to it when you start to experience the power of it. I want little girls to feel that! So, we started the devos, we started the Bible studies. Those tools are available at MyTrueGirl.com, but you know, you can look online, and there are lots of different tools you can use. I do think you need tools. I mean, it\u2019s hard for me as a\u2014well, let\u2019s not say my age! [Laughter] But at my age, it\u2019s hard for me to just take my Bible sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>There are times when the Lord has me just in the Word, and that\u2019s it. But generally, I\u2019m using a prayer journal, or I\u2019m using a Bible study; I\u2019m using some kind of tool. So, \u201ctool\u201d your daughter up! Give her the tools she needs.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Tool her up!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes, even if it\u2019s just a little diary, and you\u2019re like, \u201cInstead of writing about yourself like most girls do when they write in a diary, just write, \u2018Dear God, Today I read this Bible verse. Here\u2019s what I think it means.\u2019\u201d And just start there. It\u2019s that simple! My mom did that for me when I was eight years old.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Ahhh!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And I look back and think, \u201cWhat a gift! What a gift!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: That\u2019s amazing!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And she just handed me a Children\u2019s Daily Bread. She said, \u201cYou\u2019re supposed to read this every day, because you\u2019re a Christian.\u201d I said, \u201cI am?\u201d Okay. [Laughter] And I did. And I still have that pattern\/habit in my life. It\u2019s a lifeline in a world full of lies.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Let\u2019s talk about the lies that moms believe.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Oh, yes!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Because I\u2019m wondering if, as moms, we get so busy; we\u2019ve got kids going on; we\u2019ve got work; we\u2019ve got activities for our kids. And a mom\u2019s thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t even have time to read my Bible!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: You\u2019ve got a husband chasing you around the house, saying, \u201cWhat about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: [Laughing] \u201cAnd now you want me to get my kids to read the Bible, too?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cI feel all this weight.\u201d Encourage her.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Well, here\u2019s what my encouragement would be: \u201cYou can not disciple your daughter to live in Truth if you are not living in Truth.\u201d When I wrote Lies Girls Believe, I did focus groups in 11 cities. We just gathered 100 moms or so in each city, and we had these little clickers so that they could respond to me anonymously when I would ask a question, and I could measure\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Oh, that\u2019s good!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u2014what percentage of moms were answering which way.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And I identified the fact that moms were believing lies about being a mom. One of the biggest lies about being a mom was, \u201cI am not worthy to disciple my daughter in [fill in the blank]\u201d (with whatever your teenage sin or trauma was). For me, it would be sexual sin. \u201cI am not worthy of teaching my children to learn sexual integrity, because I didn\u2019t when I was a teenager.\u201d For other moms, it was, \u201cI am not worthy to disciple my daughter in having a healthy body image issue, because I had an eating disorder.\u201d \u201cI am not adequate to disciple my daughter in substance abuse or porn or whatever, because I struggled with that thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That lie, that shame, was still strangling her from discipling her daughter in Truth! If you don\u2019t operate in Truth, and if you don\u2019t overcome that shame from your past, you\u2019re just going to pass it on to your daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: A lot of times, they think, \u201cIf I don\u2019t talk to her about porn,\u201d or \u201cIf I don\u2019t talk to her about being boy crazy,\u201d or the thing that I struggled with, then there won\u2019t be an opportunity for lies to present themselves. Well, really, how do you know if you don\u2019t talk to your daughter about something? How do you know what she does or doesn\u2019t believe?<\/p>\n<p>So, I would just challenge you to get into God\u2019s Word. If you\u2019re feeling inadequate, insecure, insufficient\u2014all the \u201cins,\u201d really, as a mom. [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: That means that you\u2019re believing lies about yourself, and you need your heart to be set free. You can get into the Word. Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth\u2014we mentioned this yesterday\u2014has a book called Lies Women Believe. It really teaches you, as an adult woman, how to process through the lies. I wrote a mom\u2019s guide to Lies Girls Believe that I did identify (in) the top three lies moms believe.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: What are they?<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Well, one of them was, \u201cI can or can\u2019t control what my daughter believes about [blank].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Hmm.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And that\u2019s that\u2014have you ever had those yo-yo days as a mom where, at the beginning of the day, you deserve a \u201cMom of the Year\u201d award, but at the end of the day\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u2014you were the \u201cworst mom ever!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes! Most days were like that when our kids were little.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes, so you get this paralysis that, \u201cI can control it,\u201d or \u201cI can\u2019t control it.\u201d I guess the paralysis is when you can\u2019t control it. You get this pride of \u201cI am in control of my daughter\u2019s belief system.\u201d Then, in the same day, you might also get the paralysis of, \u201cUgh! I\u2019ve got nothing to contribute here!\u201d So, that yo-yo feeling that we have as a mom was one of the lies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not capable of discipling her in [fill in the blank], because I have sin in that area of my life.\u201d Or here\u2019s one of the scary ones\u2014I think this is the scariest: \u201cMy daughter is not struggling like other girls.\u201d When I asked moms, \u201cAre you concerned about girls believing lies today?\u201d eighty percent of them said, \u201cOh, yes!\u201d Then I said, \u201cIs your daughter falling prey to the lies of the culture?\u201d Eighty percent of them said, \u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Oh!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: And I was thinking, \u201cWell, that\u2019s not\u2014that\u2014that\u2019s not possible!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Those don\u2019t go together, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: So, then I started asking them questions about submission, like, \u201cDoes your daughter obey you and your husband?\u201d And stories would come out about them being disobedient at school, treating dad like a brother instead of a father figure; and a lot of those moms were saying, \u201cI think she\u2019s repeating the behavior she\u2019s seeing in me in the way they treat their dad.\u201d And they were falling under some conviction. But there was just this overall sense that their daughter wasn\u2019t sinning.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Their daughter wasn\u2019t believing the lies. And yet, when we started talking about a specific area like submission, 53% of them now said, \u201cOh, yes! My daughter is really struggling with lies, and I need to do something about it.\u201d So, we need to be objective as moms.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I think that is interesting, too, because as a mom of boys\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u2014I can remember being with groups of women when my boys got older, and we were talking about pornography. So, I\u2019m with moms that have boys between the ages of 14 and 19, and I remember asking, \u201cWhat\u2019s the discussion like about pornography in your home?\u201d And the majority of the moms said, \u201cOh, my son doesn\u2019t struggle. He never has struggled.\u201d I remember telling Dave that, and he said, \u201cUhhh.\u201d [Laughter]<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes, because\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And I remember\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Can I say what I think about it?<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: \u201cUhhh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Exactly! [Laughter] So, I said, \u201cYou know, I\u2019m just going to say, statistically speaking\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u2014\u201calmost every boy that age has in this time of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Right.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: \u201cIn the culture that we\u2019re living in.\u201d But I was amazed, like, \u201cWhat?! You don\u2019t think that the world is impacting them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Is it denial? Is it almost like, \u201cI don\u2019t want to know, because then I don\u2019t have to deal with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: I think there is an element of denial. Here\u2019s the thing: so, Adam and Eve were in this perfect garden, right? Where there had never been sin. God doesn\u2019t say to them, \u201cLet me tell you how ugly and gory death is.\u201d But He does say, \u201cDon\u2019t eat of that tree, or you will surely die.\u201d So, He\u2019s not afraid to talk about the danger, right? Just not with detail.<\/p>\n<p>What we fear as parents is, \u201cIf I\u2019m going to talk to my kids about porn, they\u2019re going to have pictures in their head of what porn is.\u201d No, they\u2019re not! You can say something like, \u201cHey, the internet has good pictures and bad pictures. I want to know if you ever see a picture that you think is a bad picture.\u201d \u201cWell, how will I know it\u2019s a bad picture?\u201d \u201cWell, you might think, \u2018Am I supposed to be seeing this?\u201d Or you might think, \u201cI don\u2019t think that I would want to watch this or see this if mom were here or if dad were here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And this is a discussion for boys and girls.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Oh, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Oh, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: There are easy ways to talk to them about warning them about that without robbing them of their innocence. That\u2019s what God models for us in the garden of Eden, right? So, we have to be objective enough to know, \u201cThis child lives in this world, which is full of lies. And the Bible says all of us are sinners. This child\u2019s going to fall; this child\u2019s going to fail. I have to do everything I can to plant Truth in them so that that\u2019s as infrequent as possible, and there\u2019s as little brokenness as there can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But I also have to be objective and realize that, just like Adam and Eve fell when they had a perfect Father, in a perfect garden, my child is going to fail. When we lose the objectivity, we\u2019re not there. We don\u2019t read the tell-tale signs when there are \u201csticky\u201d emotions that are leading them toward acting out on a lie. And we\u2019re not ready to run in with the grace and the warm, fur garments to comfort them the way that God did in the garden of Eden.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Yes. As I\u2019m listening, I\u2019m just thinking\u2014and you probably feel this, too, Dannah\u2014\u201cI want to call all moms to step into this!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: We\u2019re living in a day and age\u2014; we always have, but I just feel like at alarming rates, our girls are falling to anxiety and depression. And we, as moms, I think the place we start is on our knees. Start praying for your daughters!<\/p>\n<p>Dannah: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And let them know you\u2019re story of, \u201cThis is something I believed growing up. How are you doing with this lie?\u201d Be in God\u2019s Word. I love your admonition to \u201cbe in the Word.\u201d You know, there are a lot of great tools out that can help us get in the Word, but also help get our kids in the Word, too.<\/p>\n<p>[Musical interlude]<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I loved having Dannah Gresh with us today, talking about the lies girls believe.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I could tell you loved it!<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I know!<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I sort of wanted to get out of the way and just let you two women (you two moms) talk about these lies.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: Because we need\u2014our daughters, our granddaughters, our sisters; we need\u2014to hear it ourselves, the Truth of what God says, and even identifying the lies.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: I think that\u2019s critical.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: All of the lies you talked about, men and boys believe as well, and we need the Truth as well.<\/p>\n<p>Ann: And, as I\u2019m thinking about that, maybe you\u2019re identifying with some of the lies as well, and maybe you\u2019re a little older now, and you\u2019re thinking, \u201cOh, man! I remember the lies I believed as a young mom, as a young woman!\u201d Maybe even, financially, you\u2019re in a place that you\u2019re thinking, \u201cI could help these younger women!\u201d Or you\u2019re asking the question, \u201cCould I help these younger women?\u201d And I\u2019m saying, \u201cYes!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We have people who are supporting us financially monthly. We\u2019re inviting you: become a part of the family, and help impact lives for the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n<p>Dave: I mean, we are about one thing: getting the Truth of God\u2019s Word to families; changing families through the Truth of God\u2019s Word.
